Abstract Background Terpenes have been shown to have an effect on metabolic status. However, it is unclear how they are associated with the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and whether insulin resistance (IR) mechanisms are involved. Methods This cross-sectional study included data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013–2014). Serum terpenes (α- pinene, β- pinene, and limonene) were quantified by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. MetS was diagnosed by lipid, glucose, blood pressure, and waist circumference criteria. IR status was assessed using the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) model and triglyceride-glucose index. Regression analysis models, mixed-effects models (weighted quantile sum regression models, quantile g-computation and Bayesian Kernel machine regression models), and mediation analysis were used for analysis. Results Among 1563 U.S. general population (mean age 39.0 years), 447 (28.6%) had a diagnosis of MetS, and the median concentration was 0.08 ng/mL for α- pinene, 0.08 ng/mL for β- pinene, and 1.18 ng/mL for limonene. The terpene mixture showed positive joint association with MetS (OR = 1.454, 95%CI = 1.153, 1.833) and HOMA-IR (β = 0.569, 95%CI = 0.196, 0.942), with limonene contributing relatively large weights in both MetS (41.1%) and HOMA-IR (68.9%). Furthermore, HOMA-IR was positively associated with MetS (OR = 2.299, 95%CI = 1.888, 2.817) and its diagnostic components. When identified as a mediator, HOMA-IR accounted for approximately 15.8%, 20.0%, and 14.3% of the indirect effects between terpenes (α- pinene, β- pinene, and limonene) and MetS, respectively. The results were consistent when the IR biomarker was replaced by triglyceride-glucose index. Conclusion Serum terpenes were positively associated with MetS, which might be partially mediated by the mechanism of IR.

Abstract Background Efficient triage in emergency departments (EDs) is critical for timely and appropriate care. Traditional triage systems primarily rely on structured data, but the increasing availability of unstructured data, such as clinical notes, presents an opportunity to enhance predictive models for assessing emergency severity and to explore associations between patient characteristics and severity outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combining structured and unstructured data to predict emergency severity more accurately. Methods Data from the 2021 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) for adult ED patients were used. Emergency severity was categorized into urgent (scores 1–3) and non-urgent (scores 4–5) based on the Emergency Severity Index. Unstructured data, including chief complaints and reasons for visit, were processed using a Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) model. Structured data included patient demographics and clinical information. Four machine learning models—Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and Extreme Gradient Boosting—were applied to three data configurations: structured data only, unstructured data only, and combined data. A mean probability model was also created by averaging the predicted probabilities from the structured and unstructured models. Results The study included 8,716 adult patients, of whom 74.6% were classified as urgent. Association analysis revealed significant predictors of emergency severity, including older age (OR = 2.13 for patients 65 +), higher heart rate (OR = 1.56 for heart rates > 90 bpm), and specific chronic conditions such as chronic kidney disease (OR = 2.28) and coronary artery disease (OR = 2.55). Gradient Boosting with combined data demonstrated the highest performance, achieving an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.789, an accuracy of 0.726, and a precision of 0.892. The mean probability model also showed improvements over structured-only models. Conclusions Combining structured and unstructured data improved the prediction of emergency severity in ED patients, highlighting the potential for enhanced triage systems. Integrating text data into predictive models can provide more accurate and nuanced severity assessments, improving resource allocation and patient outcomes. Further research should focus on real-time application and validation in diverse clinical settings.

Abstract This article investigates the axial compression performance of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) tube restrained transverse ring reinforced concrete composite columns. Six composite columns were designed for axial compression experiments and subjected to multi condition ABAQUS finite element simulations. Analyzed the effects of constraint width, circumferential spacing, GFRP tube thickness, and concrete strength on the bearing capacity of composite materials, mainly studying the effect of hoop section form on the mechanical properties of composite columns. The results show that the spacing between the stirrups and the width of the constraint on the bearing capacity show a trend of increasing first and then decreasing, with the optimal constraint width being 40–60 mm; Increasing the thickness of GFRP tubes can effectively improve the bearing capacity, but the gain effect weakens with the increase of concrete strength.

Abstract Background Gliomas are the highly aggressive brain tumor and also the most devastating human tumors. The latent TGF binding proteins (LTBP) had been found to be involved in malignant biological process and could be used as potent biomarkers in several solid tumors. While the role of LTBP family in human glioma remain to be elucidated. Methods Normalized gene expression and corresponding clinical data of 2407 gliomas samples in public datasets were downloaded from Gliovis. Abstract Bilirubin is widely recognized to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics. However, the relationship between bilirubin and coronary artery disease (CAD) remains controversial, particularly in individuals receiving Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). Given that statins may enhance the production of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and bilirubin, we investigated the long-term cardiovascular prognostic role of bilirubin levels elevated by statin use in patients undergoing PCI. Data of 6945 subjects undergoing PCI were enrolled in this study. We divided the patients into two groups based on serum total bilirubin (TB) levels detected prior to PCI. The high TB group consisted of patients with serum TB values > 8.4 μmmol/L, while the low TB group consisted of patients with serum TB values ≤ 8.4 μmmol/L. The median follow-up time was 836 days. Cox proportional hazards models were performed to evaluate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) associated with bilirubin levels. The association between TB levels and risk of MACE was significant [adjusted HR = 0.557, 95% CI (0.59–0.96), p = 0.020). Linear analysis was performed to determine the association between preadmission usage of statin and bilirubin level. Abstract This paper proposes a new impulse excitation technique using a square plate. First, the functional relationship between the modal frequency of the specimen and the geometrical dimensions and mechanical parameters was established by using the finite element method. Then, the continuous functional relationship derived by a homotopy method allowed the frequency ratios to be related to the thickness-to-length ratio and Poisson’s ratio. By measuring the frequency ratios and thickness-to-length ratio, Poisson’s ratio could be calculated using this functional relationship. When the density and Poisson’s ratio were known, Young’s modulus could be identified inversely in conjunction with the finite element analysis. Finally, a comparison test between this method and the traditional impulse excitation technique was designed and implemented, and the results showed that this method has advantages in both testing efficiency and accuracy. The study provides a new idea for system identification, which has important application value and promotion significance.

Abstract Background Lung cancer is a leading public health concern worldwide. Previous evidence suggests that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma may contribute to its development. However, whether these common chronic pulmonary diseases are causal factors of lung cancer remained unclear. Methods Summary statistics from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were used for Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Genetic data for COPD were obtained from the Global Biobank Meta-Analysis Initiative, and asthma data were retrieved from the UK Biobank cohort. Suitable instrumental variables were selected based on quality control measures. GWAS summary data for lung cancer were obtained from a large study involved 85,716 participants. MR analysis was performed using various methods, and sensitivity analyses were conducted. Multivariable MR (MVMR) analysis was employed to account for potential confounding factors. Results Our MR analysis revealed a significant causal association between COPD and lung cancer, including its subtypes such as lung squamous cell carcinoma, lung adenocarcinoma, and small cell lung carcinoma. Genetically predicted COPD was associated with a 64% increased risk of lung cancer and a 2.3 to 2.8-fold increased risk of the different subtypes. However, in the MVMR analysis adjusting for smoking, alcohol drinking, and body mass index, the association between COPD and lung cancer became non-significant. No significant association was observed between asthma (childhood-onset and adult-onset) and lung cancer and its histological subtypes. Conclusions Our study suggests a potential causal association between COPD and lung cancer. However, this association became non-significant after adjusting for smoking in the multivariable analysis.

AimsResearch on the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index in patients with stable coronary artery disease (SCAD) remains relatively limited. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association of the TyG index and its derived indicators, including the baseline TyG index, the baseline triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI), the mean TyG index, and the triglyceride glucose index-standard deviation (TyG-SD), with the prognosis of SCAD patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).MethodsThis retrospective study enrolled 2,306 patients. The Cox proportional hazards model was utilized to evaluate the association between the four TyG indicators and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE). The predictive ability of the four TyG indicators for MACCE was assessed using the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was employed to assess the prognostic differences among groups.ResultsAfter a median follow-up of 26.1 months, a total of 352 patients (15.3%) experienced MACCE. The Cox regression analysis revealed that under a fully adjusted model, when the four TyG indicators were stratified by tertiles, patients in the highest tertile of each TyG indicator had a significantly increased risk of MACCE compared to those in the lowest tertile. Specifically, the hazard ratio for baseline TyG index was 1.653 (95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.234-2.214), for baseline TyG-BMI was 2.467 (95%CI: 1.849-3.293), for mean TyG index was 2.451 (95%CI: 1.794-3.349), and for TyG-SD was 1.896 (95%CI: 1.430-2.513). Time-dependent ROC curve demonstrated that the mean TyG index had the strongest predictive ability for MACCE at each follow-up time point. The Kaplan-Meier analysis results showed that when the four TyG indicators were grouped by tertiles, there were significant differences in the cumulative incidence of MACCE among the three groups for each indicator (P < 0.05).ConclusionHigher levels of the TyG index and its derived indicators were each independently and positively associated with the risk of MACCE in SCAD patients undergoing PCI. Among these indicators, the mean TyG index demonstrated the greatest predictive value for the risk of MACCE at each follow-up time point. Consequently, tracking the long-term trends of the TyG index may be prioritized in clinical practice.

BackgroundMultifaceted factors play a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This study aimed to utilize multifaceted indicators to construct MASLD risk prediction machine learning models and explore the core factors within these models.MethodsMASLD risk prediction models were constructed based on seven machine learning algorithms using all variables, insulin-related variables, demographic characteristics variables, and other indicators, respectively. Subsequently, the partial dependence plot(PDP) method and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were utilized to explain the roles of important variables in the model to filter out the optimal indicators for constructing the MASLD risk model.ResultsRanking the feature importance of the Random Forest (RF) model and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model constructed using all variables found that both homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and triglyceride glucose-waist circumference (TyG-WC) were the first and second most important variables. The MASLD risk prediction model constructed using the variables with top 10 importance was superior to the previous model. The PDP and SHAP methods were further utilized to screen the best indicators (including HOMA-IR, TyG-WC, age, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and ethnicity) for constructing the model, and the mean area under the curve value of the models was 0.960.ConclusionsHOMA-IR and TyG-WC are core factors in predicting MASLD risk. Ultimately, our study constructed the optimal MASLD risk prediction model using HOMA-IR, TyG-WC, age, AST, and ethnicity.

AimsIn light of the escalating global incidence of Parkinson’s disease and the dearth of therapeutic interventions that can alter the disease’s course, there exists an urgent necessity to comprehensively elucidate and quantify the disease’s global burden.MethodsThis study analyzed the incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of Parkinson’s disease at global, regional, and national levels based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021. Bayesian age-period cohort (BAPC) analysis was used to predict the burden in Parkinson’s disease from 2022 to 2035.ResultsIn 2021, 11.77 million people worldwide had Parkinson’s disease. Age-standardized rates of incidence, prevalence, and DALYs increased to 15.63/100,000, 138.63/100,000, and 89.59/100,000. The burden of Parkinson’s disease were higher in males than in females, and showed an increase and then a slight decrease with age. The disease burden was highest in East Asia. BAPC projection showed an increase in all metrics by 2035 except for a slight decrease in the age-standardized DALYs rates.ConclusionThe global burden of Parkinson’s disease has risen over the past 32 years, and there is a need to focus on key populations, as well as to improve health policies to prevent and treat Parkinson’s disease.

Background The motor imagery (MI) paradigm is widely used in active brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), but its effectiveness is hindered by accuracy limitations and individual variability. Tactile stimulation has been proposed as a potential method to enhance MI performance; however, integrating such stimulation in real-time MI tasks remains challenging due to the spontaneous nature of MI.Objective This study aimed to investigate the real-time effects of bilateral vibration tactile stimulation on the performance of left and right hand MI paradigms using a controlled trial with healthy subjects.Methods Fourteen healthy subjects participated in MI tasks under two conditions: without vibration stimulation and with bilateral vibration stimulation. Brain activation patterns and decoding accuracy of MI-BCI were compared and analyzed between these two conditions.Results The experimental findings demonstrated that vibration stimulation effectively activated the sensorimotor cortex and enhanced the event-related desynchronization (ERD) phenomenon induced by MI. Although bilateral vibration stimulation did not directly improve decoding accuracy of left and right hand MI, it notably peaked approximately 2 seconds post-stimulation, resulting in an approximate 7% increase in accuracy compared to baseline MI.Conclusion This study systematically explored the phased impact of continuous vibration stimulation on MI performance. The findings discuss potential optimization strategies for integrating tactile feedback into MI-based BCIs, thus laying groundwork for future research in tactile-enhanced MI brain-controlled systems.

Introduction Chronic kidney disease is a growing health issue, and the options of prevention and therapy remain limited. Although a number of observational studies have linked higher Lp(a) [lipoprotein(a)] levels to the kidney impairment, the causal relationship remains to be determined. The purpose of this study was to assess the causal association between Lp(a) levels and CKD.Methods We selected eight single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with Lp(a) levels as instrumental variables. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) from CKDGen consortium yielded the summary data information for CKD. We designed the bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. The estimates were computed using inverse-variance weighted (IVW), simple median, weighted median, and maximum likelihood. MR-Egger regression was used to detect pleiotropy.Results Fixed-effect IVW analysis indicated that genetically predicted Lp(a) levels were associated with CKD significantly (odds ratio, 1.039; 95% CI, 1.009–1.069; p = 0.010). The SNPs showed no pleiotropy according to result of MR-Egger test. Results from sensitivity analyses were consistent. In the inverse MR analysis, random-effect IVW method showed CKD had no causal effect on the elevated Lp(a) (odds ratio, 1.154; 95% CI, 0.845–1.576; p = 0.367).Conclusion In this bidirectional two-sample MR analysis, the causal deteriorating effects of genetically predicted plasma Lp(a) levels on the risk of CKD were identified. On the contrary, there is no evidence to support a causal effect of CKD on Lp(a) levels.

The vulnerable plaques in atherosclerosis can cause severe outcome with great danger of acute cardiovascular events. Thus, timely diagnosis and treatment of vulnerable plaques in early stage can effectively benefit the clinical management of atherosclerosis. In this work, a targeting theranostic strategy on early-stage vulnerable plaques in atherosclerosis is realized by a LAID nanoplatform with X-CT and fluorescent dual-mode imaging and lipid-inflammation integrated regulation abilities. The iodinated contrast agents (ICA), phenylboronic acid modified astaxanthin and oxidized-dextran (oxDEX) jointly construct the nanoparticles loaded with the lipid-specific probe LFP. LAID indicates an active targeting to plaques along with the dual-responsive disassembly in oxidative stress and acidic microenvironment of atherosclerosis. The X-CT signals of ICA execute the location of early-stage plaques, while the LFP combines with lipid cores and realizes the recognition of vulnerable plaques. Meanwhile, the treatment based on astaxanthin is performed for restraining the progression of plaques. Transcriptome sequencing suggests that LAID can inhibit the lipid uptake and block NF-κB pathway, which synergistically demonstrates a lipid-inflammation integrated regulation to suppression the plaques growing. The in vivo investigations suggest that LAID delivers a favorable theranostics to the early-stage vulnerable plaques, which provides an impressive prospect for reducing the adverse prognosis of atherosclerosis.

Abstract Background The calmodulin (CaM) and calmodulin-like (CML) proteins play regulatory roles in plant growth and development, responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, and other biological processes. As a popular fruit and ornamental crop, it is important to explore the regulatory mechanism of flower and fruit development of passion fruit. Results In this study, 32 PeCaM/PeCML genes were identified from passion fruit genome and were divided into 9 groups based on phylogenetic analysis. The structural analysis, including conserved motifs, gene structure and homologous modeling, illustrates that the PeCaM/PeCML in the same subgroup have relative conserved structural features. Collinearity analysis suggested that the expansion of the CaM/CML gene family likely took place mainly by segmental duplication, and the whole genome replication events were closely related with the rapid expansion of the gene group. PeCaM/PeCMLs were potentially required for different floral tissues development. Significantly, PeCML26 had extremely high expression levels during ovule and fruit development compared with other PeCML genes, suggesting that PeCML26 had potential functions involved in the development of passion fruit flowers and fruits. The co-presence of various cis-elements associated with growth and development, hormone responsiveness, and stress responsiveness in the promoter regions of these PeCaM/PeCMLs might contribute to their diverse regulatory roles. Furthermore, PeCaM/PeCMLs were also induced by various abiotic stresses. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the CaM/CML gene family and valuable clues for future studies on the function and evolution of CaM/CML genes in passion fruit. Conclusion A total of 32 PeCaM/PeCML genes were divided into 9 groups. The PeCaM/PeCML genes showed differential expression patterns in floral tissues at different development stages. It is worth noting that PeCML26, which is highly homologous to AtCaM2, not only interacts with multiple BBR-BPC TFs, but also has high expression levels during ovule and fruit development, suggesting that PeCML26 had potential functions involved in the development of passion fruit flowers and fruits. This research lays the foundation for future investigations and validation of the potential function of PeCaM/PeCML genes in the growth and development of passion fruit.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are RNA transcripts longer than 200 nucleotides that do not code for proteins but have been linked to cancer development and metastasis. Metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT-1) influences crucial cancer hallmarks through intricate molecular mechanisms, including proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis, apoptosis, and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The current article highlights the involvement of MALAT-1 in drug resistance, making it a potential target to overcome chemotherapy refractoriness. It discusses the impact of MALAT-1 on immunomodulatory molecules, such as major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins and PD-L1, leading to immune evasion and hindering anti-tumor immune responses. MALAT-1 also plays a significant role in cancer immunology by regulating diverse immune cell populations. In summary, MALAT-1 is a versatile cancer regulator, influencing tumorigenesis, chemoresistance, and immunotherapy responses. Understanding its precise molecular mechanisms is crucial for developing targeted therapies, and therapeutic strategies targeting MALAT-1 show promise for improving cancer treatment outcomes. However, further research is needed to fully uncover the role of MALAT-1 in cancer biology and translate these findings into clinical applications.

Abstract Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and depression are common diseases that lead to adverse health outcomes. Depressive Symptoms may be a risk factor for CVD. But few studies focused on the impact of socioeconomic factors, common medical history and dietary intake about this association. This study analyzed National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2016. Complex sampling-weighted logistic regression models were used to compare the odds ratios (ORs) of CVD in participants with different depressive symptoms. 11,516 NHANES participants aged ≥ 40 years were included in the final analysis, of whom 1842 had CVD. Compared with participants with no/minimal depression, participants with mild, moderate, and moderately severe/severe depression had OR values of 1.25 (95% CI 1.01–1.54), 1.98 (95% CI 1.32–2.96), and 2.41 (95% CI 1.63–3.57). The association of depressive symptoms with CVD follow a dose-dependent pattern. The interactions of depressive symptoms with gender (Interaction P = 0.009), diabetes (Interaction P = 0.010), household income level (Interaction P = 0.002), dietary cholesterol intake (Interaction P = 0.017) on CVD were observed. More severe depressive symptoms are associated with increased risk of CVD in US population. The association may be more pronounced in the female population, population with diabetes, low family income level, or high dietary cholesterol intake.

Aim: Parkinson's disease (PD) tremor is associated with dysfunction in the basal ganglia (BG), cerebellum (CB), and sensorimotor networks (SMN). We investigated tremor-related static functional network connectivity (SFNC) and dynamic functional network connectivity (DFNC) in PD patients. Methods: We analyzed the resting-state functional MRI data of 21 tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease (TDPD) patients and 29 healthy controls. We compared DFNC and SFNC between the three networks and assessed their associations with tremor severity. Results: TDPD patients exhibited increased SFNC between the SMN and BG networks. In addition, they spent more mean dwell time (MDT) in state 2, characterized by sparse connections, and less MDT in state 4, indicating stronger connections. Furthermore, enhanced DFNC between the CB and SMN was observed in state 2. Notably, the MDT of state 2 was positively associated with tremor scores. Conclusion: The enhanced dynamic connectivity between the CB and SMN in TDPD patients suggests a potential compensatory mechanism. However, the tendency to remain in a state of sparse connectivity may contribute to the severity of tremor symptoms.

Background: Cold environments pose serious threats on human health, with increased risk for myocardial infarction, stroke, frostbite, and hypothermia. Acquired cold acclimation is required to minimize cold-induced injures and to improve metabolic health. However, the underlying mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. Objective: We aimed to identify critical amino acids involved in cold acclimation and unmask the regulatory mechanisms. Methods: A total of twenty male participants were recruited and followed up after 3 months’ natural cold exposure. Cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) tests and clinical biochemical analysis were performed at baseline and after 3-months cold exposure, whilst blood samples were collected, and plasma amino acids were analyzed by targeted metabolomics. To further confirm the effect of lysine on cold tolerance and explain the latent mechanism, mice were challenged with chronic cold exposure for 7 days with lysine supplement, then core and local surface temperature as well as thermogenesis activity were detected. Results: Continuous cold exposure shortened the CIVD onset time and increased the average finger temperature. Levels of the plasma lysine and glycine were decreased in both humans and mice. Venn analysis from three datasets revealed that lysine was the only significantly changed plasma amino acid, which strongly correlated with the altered CIVD. Moreover, mice sustained a relatively higher core temperature and surface temperature in the back, tail and paws upon lysine supplementation. Furthermore, lysine supplementation increased the level of histone H3K18cr and promoted the gene and protein expression of Cpt1a, Cpt2 and Cyp27a1 in liver. Conclusion: Our work identified lysine as a critical amino acid for the remodeling of hepatic histone crotonylation that facilitates cold acclimation.

BackgroundDue to the scarcity and high cost of MRI in resource-constrained regions, prompt diagnosis and treatment of rotator cuff tears remain problematic in these areas. Therefore, extensive research has been conducted to predict rotator cuff tears using simple and affordable anteroposterior radiographs. It remains unclear whether non-standard anteroposterior radiographs would have a notable impact on the preciseness of the diagnosis.MethodWe analyzed patients treated for shoulder pain at hospitals. These patients underwent shoulder joint MRI and standard anteroposterior radiographs, were categorized into those with rotator cuff tears and a control group. We assessed whether the radiographs were standard anteroposterior radiographs using classification criteria from previous studies. Three assessors independently measured the acromiohumeral interval, upwards migration index, acromion index, critical shoulder angle, and double-circle radius ratio in radiographic images. The intraclass correlation coefficient and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess measurement reliability and predictive capabilities of each predictive method for rotator cuff tears.ResultsThis study included 102 non-standard radiographs that met the research criteria for the measurement and analysis. The intragroup correlation coefficients for the acromiohumeral interval, upwards migration index, and double-circle radius ratio were above 0.7 (0.77, 0.71, 0.76), while those for the acromion index and critical shoulder angle exceeded 0.8 (0.86 and 0.87). In non-standard radiographs, the double-circle radius ratio reliably predicted rotator cuff tears (p 0.05). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of the double-circle radius ratio, estimated by the three researchers for rotator cuff tears.ConclusionThis study found that non-standard radiographs significantly impaired the diagnostic performance of the acromiohumeral interval, upwards migration index, acromion index, and critical shoulder angle. Only the double-circle radius ratio maintained its predictive power (although this diminished capability may fall short of clinical relevance) and demonstrated high applicability. These findings indicate the need for researchers to prioritize the quality of radiographs and focus on reducing the sensitivity of the prediction method in relation to radiograph quality. The capability exhibited by the double-circle radius ratio warrants further investigation, to facilitate a simplified diagnosis of rotator cuff tears.

Abstract The formation of carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds via the reaction of small inorganic molecules is of great significance for understanding the fundamental transition from inorganic to organic matter, and thus the origin of life. Yet, the detailed mechanism of the C-H bond formation, particularly the time scale and molecular-level control of the dynamics, remain elusive. Here, we investigate the light-induced bimolecular reaction starting from a van der Waals molecular dimer composed of two small inorganic molecules, H2 and CO. Employing reaction microscopy driven by a tailored two-color light field, we identify the pathways leading to C-H photobonding thereby producing HCO+ ions, and achieve coherent control over the reaction dynamics. Using a femtosecond pump-probe scheme, we capture the ultrafast formation time, i.e., 198 ± 16 femtoseconds. The real-time visualization and coherent control of the dynamics contribute to a deeper understanding of the most fundamental bimolecular reactions responsible for C–H bond formation, thus contributing to elucidate the emergence of organic components in the universe.

Abstract Rough set theory places great importance on approximation accuracy, which is used to gauge how well a rough set model describes a target concept. However, traditional approximation accuracy has limitations since it varies with changes in the target concept and cannot evaluate the overall descriptive ability of a rough set model. To overcome this, two types of average approximation accuracy that objectively assess a rough set model’s ability to approximate all information granules is proposed. The first is the relative average approximation accuracy, which is based on all sets in the universe and has several basic properties. The second is the absolute average approximation accuracy, which is based on undefinable sets and has yielded significant conclusions. We also explore the relationship between these two types of average approximation accuracy. Finally, the average approximation accuracy has practical applications in addressing missing attribute values in incomplete information tables.

Abstract Media convergence works by processing information from different modalities and applying them to different domains. It is difficult for the conventional knowledge graph to utilise multi‐media features because the introduction of a large amount of information from other modalities reduces the effectiveness of representation learning and makes knowledge graph inference less effective. To address the issue, an inference method based on Media Convergence and Rule‐guided Joint Inference model (MCRJI) has been proposed. The authors not only converge multi‐media features of entities but also introduce logic rules to improve the accuracy and interpretability of link prediction. First, a multi‐headed self‐attention approach is used to obtain the attention of different media features of entities during semantic synthesis. Second, logic rules of different lengths are mined from knowledge graph to learn new entity representations. Finally, knowledge graph inference is performed based on representing entities that converge multi‐media features. Numerous experimental results show that MCRJI outperforms other advanced baselines in using multi‐media features and knowledge graph inference, demonstrating that MCRJI provides an excellent approach for knowledge graph inference with converged multi‐media features.

BackgroundThe triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, a metric computed from the levels of fasting triglyceride (TG) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG), has emerged as a simple surrogate measure for insulin resistance (IR) in recent years. In multiple critical care scenarios, such as contrast-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) and cardiorenal syndrome, a high TyG index levels shows a notable correlation with AKI incidence. However, its predictive value for AKI in critically ill hypertensive patients remains uncertain.MethodsParticipants were selected from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database and divided into quartiles based on the TyG index. The primary focus of the study was to investigate the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI), with in-hospital mortality as a secondary endpoint, assessed among all study subjects as well as specifically among AKI patients. The use of renal replacement therapy (RRT), indicative of AKI progression, was also considered a secondary endpoint reflecting renal outcomes. To explore the correlation between the TyG index and AKI risk in critically ill hypertensive patients, the study employed a restricted cubic splines model and Cox proportional hazards (CPH) models. Additionally, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was utilized to assess differences in primary and secondary outcomes across groups categorized by their TyG index. Analyses were conducted to ensure the consistency of the predictive capability of TyG index across various subgroups.ResultsOur study included 4,418 participants, with 57% being male patients. AKI occurred in 56.1% of cases. Through the CPH analysis, we identified a significant association between the TyG index and AKI occurrence in critically ill hypertensive patients. With the help of a restricted cubic splines model, we observed a direct relationship between an elevated TyG index and an increased AKI. Subgroup examinations consistently proved the predictive value of the TyG index across categories. Furthermore, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed notable differences in RRT among AKI patients.ConclusionThe findings underscore the importance of the TyG index as a reliable predictor for the occurrence of AKI and adverse renal outcomes among hypertensive patients in critical ill states. Nevertheless, validating causality mandates extensive prospective investigations.

Summary: Recently, there has been a growing interest in using sustainable energy to decrease lignin monomers to generate high-value-added products. Here, we present a protocol for electrocatalytic hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. We describe steps for catalyst preparation, performing electrocatalytic experiments, high-performance liquid chromatography analysis, and in situ infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy testing. Sesuvium portulacastrum L. is a flowering succulent halophyte in the ice plant family Aizoaceae. There are various ecotypes distributed in sandy coastlines and salty marshlands in tropical and subtropical regions with the common name of sea purslane. These plants are tolerant to salt, drought, and flooding stresses and have been used for the stabilization of sand dunes and the restoration of coastal areas. With the increased salinization of agricultural soils and the widespread pollution of toxic metals in the environment, as well as excessive nutrients in waterbodies, S. portulacastrum has been explored for the desalination of saline soils and the phytoremediation of metals from contaminated soils and nitrogen and phosphorus from eutrophic water. In addition, sea purslane has nutraceutical and pharmaceutical value. Tissue analysis indicates that many ecotypes are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and mineral nutrients. Native Americans in Florida eat it raw, pickled, or cooked. In the Philippines, it is known as atchara after being pickled. S. portulacastrum contains high levels of ecdysteroids, which possess antidiabetic, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities in mammals. In this review article, we present the botanical information, the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying the tolerance of sea purslane to different stresses, its nutritional and pharmaceutical value, and the methods for its propagation and production in saline soils and waterbodies. Its adaptability to a wide range of stressful environments and its role in the production of valuable bioactive compounds suggest that S. portulacastrum can be produced in saline soils as a leafy vegetable and is a valuable genetic resource that can be used for the bioremediation of soil salinity and eutrophic water.

To ensure secure and flexible data sharing in cloud storage, attribute-based encryption (ABE) is introduced to meet the requirements of fine-grained access control and secure one-to-many data sharing. However, the computational burden imposed by attribute encryption renders it unsuitable for resource-constrained environments such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing. Furthermore, the issue of accountability for illegal keys is crucial, as authorized users may actively disclose or sell authorization keys for personal gain, and keys may also passively leak due to management negligence or hacking incidents. Additionally, since all authorization keys are generated by the attribute authorization center, there is a potential risk of unauthorized key forgery. In response to these challenges, this paper proposes an efficient and accountable leakage-resistant scheme based on attribute encryption. The scheme adopts more secure online/offline encryption mechanisms and cloud server-assisted decryption to alleviate the computational burden on resource-constrained devices. For illegal keys, the scheme supports accountability for both users and the authorization center, allowing the revocation of decryption privileges for malicious users. In the case of passively leaked keys, timely key updates and revocation of decryption capabilities for leaked keys are implemented. Finally, the paper provides selective security and accountability proofs for the scheme under standard models. Efficiency analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme enhances encryption/decryption efficiency, and the storage overhead for accountability is also extremely low.

Background: The pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) may be closely related to immune regulation and inflammatory cytokines induced by specific flora. Repairing the intestinal flora may alter the immune response in MS patients, thus opening up novel approaches for the treatment of MS. Objective: We aimed to test the therapeutic effect of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and the characteristics of intestinal microbiota composition changes, explore the potential mechanisms of FMT treatment. Methods: EAE animals were treated with FMT, with the therapeutic effects were evaluated by observing neurological scores and measuring serum levels of cortisol, IL-17, and TLR-2. Fecal microbiome 16S rRNA sequencing was used to profile changes in microbiota composition, and adrenalectomy pretreatment was used to test whether FMT effects were dependent on HPA axis function. Results: FMT improved neurological function and reduced serum IL-17 to levels that were close to the control group. FMT reestablished intestinal homeostasis by altering the structure of the intestinal flora, increasing the abundance of beneficial flora, and regulating intestinal metabolites. We found that the therapeutic effects of FMT depended partly on the efferent function of the HPA axis; surgical disruption of the HPA axis altered the abundance and diversity of the intestinal flora. Conclusion: FMT showed a neuroprotective effect on EAE by increasing the abundance of the beneficial flora, rebuilding intestinal homeostasis, reducing IL-17 and cortisol serum levels, and promoting serum TLR-2; the therapeutic effect of FMT on EAE is partly dependent on the HPA axis.

BackgroundFrailty is a complex geriatric syndrome that seriously affects the quality of life of older adults. Previous observational studies have reported a strong relationship of frailty with the gut microbiota; however, further studies are warranted to establish a causal link. Accordingly, we aimed to conduct a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study to assess the causal relationship between frailty, as measured by the frailty index, and gut microbiota composition.MethodsInstrumental variables for the frailty index (N = 175, 226) and 211 gut bacteria (N = 18,340) were obtained through a genome-wide association study. A two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis was performed to assess the causal relationship of gut microbiota with frailty. Additionally, we performed inverse Mendelian randomization analyses to examine the direction of causality. Inverse variance weighting was used as the primary method in this study, which was supplemented by horizontal pleiotropy and sensitivity analyses to increase confidence in the results.ResultsBacteroidia (b = −0.041, SE = 0.017, p = 0.014) and Eubacterium ruminantium (b = −0.027, SE = 0.012, p = 0.028) were protective against frailty amelioration. Additionally, the following five bacteria types were associated with high frailty: Betaproteobacteria (b = 0.049, SE = 0.024, p = 0.042), Bifidobacterium (b = 0.042, SE = 0.016, p = 0.013), Clostridium innocuum (b = 0.023, SE = 0.011, p = 0.036), E. coprostanoligenes (b = 0.054, SE = 0.018, p = 0.003), and Allisonella (b = 0.032, SE = 0.013, p = 0.012). Contrastingly, frailty affected Butyrivibrio in the gut microbiota (b = 1.225, SE = 0.570, p = 0.031). The results remained stable within sensitivity and validation analyses.ConclusionOur findings strengthen the evidence of a bidirectional causal link between the gut microbiota and frailty. It is important to elucidate this relationship to optimally enhance the care of older adults and improve their quality of life.

Online education has become a popular teaching method beyond classroom education. However, online teaching resources bring the software and hardware resources cost and security burden of cloud computing, which limits the willingness to share online resources. How to effectively motivate different schools to share teaching resources is a challenging issue. This paper proposes an excitation mechanism to promote high-quality online resource sharing. Firstly, under the resource constraints of the cloud platform, a utility oriented resource sharing model is established. Then, a game of choice between students and course resources is studied, which allows users to participate course strategy selection. Next, a particle swarm optimization algorithm was used to design an optimal cloud computing resource allocation scheme that maximizes revenue. It expects that high-quality course resources will be allocate more cloud computing resources. Finally, experiment simulation shows that appropriately excitation mechanisms can effectively promote the sharing of teaching resources, furthermore, the proposed resource allocation scheme is significantly better than the average allocation scheme.

Abstract Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of lignocellulosic bio-oil to value-added chemicals offers an attractive avenue to use the increasing intermittent renewable electricity and biomass-derived feedstocks. However, to date the partial current densities to target products of these reactions are lower than those needed for industrial-scale productivity, which limits its prospects. Here we report a flow-cell system equipped with a Rh diffusion electrode to hydrogenate lignocellulose-derived aromatic monomers, such as furans and lignin monomers, to value-added chemicals. We achieve high faradaic efficiencies up to 64% at industrial-scale current densities of 300–500 mA cm−2, representing high productivities to target products. A screening of electrocatalysts indicates that only by highly-electrolyte-permeable Rh diffusion electrodes are we able to unite current density with faradaic efficiency. We apply in-situ infrared reflection–absorption spectroscopy to investigate the electrode-potential-dependent reaction pathways and intermediates, confirming a wide potential window for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogenation of lignocellulose-derived aromatics to target products.

Abstract Background Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is one of the most common complications of musculoskeletal injury, leading to the necrosis and demise of skeletal muscle cells. Our previous study showed that embryonic stem cells-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ESC–MSCs) are novel therapeutics in ACS treatment. As extracellular vesicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining attention as cell-free therapeutics that have advantages over parental stem cells, the therapeutic potential and mechanisms of EVs from ESC–MSCs on ACS need to be explored. Method In the present study, we examined the protective effects in the experimental ACS rat model and investigated the role of macrophages in mediating these effects. Next, we used transcriptome sequencing to explore the mechanisms by which ESC–MSC-EVs regulate macrophage polarization. Furthermore, miRNA sequencing was performed on ESC–MSC-EVs to identify miRNA candidates associated with macrophage polarization. Results We found that intravenous administration of ESC–MSC-EVs, given at the time of fasciotomy, significantly promotes the anti-inflammation process, angiogenesis, and functional recovery of muscle in ACS. The beneficial effects were associated with ESC–MSC-EVs affecting macrophage polarization by delivering various miRNAs which regulate NF-κB, JAK/STAT, and PI3K/AKT pathways. Our data further illustrate that ESC–MSC-EVs mainly modulate macrophage polarization via the miR-21/PTEN, miR-320a/PTEN, miR-423/NLRP3, miR-100/mTOR, and miR-26a/TLR3 axes. Conclusion Together, our results demonstrated the beneficial effects of ESC–MSC-EVs in ACS, wherein the miRNAs present in ESC–MSC-EVs regulate the polarization of macrophages.

In chemical reactions, the nuclear motion of the molecules plays a crucial role in determining the reaction rates and outcomes. Employing the cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy and femtosecond pump-probe techniques, we perform a molecular-level study into the influence of nuclear vibrations on light-induced bimolecular reactions within H_{2}-D_{2} dimers. The study focuses on the formation dynamics of D_{2}H^{+} and H_{2}D^{+} cations, shedding light on the interplay between translational and vibrational motions of the nuclei steering the bimolecular reactions. Our observations reveal a notable yield ratio of 1:1.6 between H_{2}D^{+} and D_{2}H^{+} channels, accompanied with a faster formation of D_{2}H^{+} compared to H_{2}D^{+}. Molecular dynamics simulations unveil that the faster vibrational motion of H_{2}^{+} than that of D_{2}^{+} upon single ionization within the dimer accounts for these differences. Our findings provide new insight into the time-resolved kinetic isotope effect on the bimolecular reactions, highlighting the critical relationship between nuclear vibrational motions and reaction dynamics.

The low specific speed centrifugal pump plays a crucial role in industrial applications, and ensuring its efficient and stable operation is extremely important for the safety of the whole system. The pump must operate with an extremely high head, an extremely low flow rate, and a very fast speed. The internal flow structure is complex and there is a strong interaction between dynamic and static components; consequently, the hydraulic excitation force produced becomes a significant factor that triggers abnormal vibrations in the pump. Therefore, this study focuses on a low specific speed centrifugal pump and uses a single-stage model pump to conduct PIV and pressure pulsation tests. The findings reveal that the PIV tests successfully captured the typical jet-wake structure at the outlet of the impeller, as well as the flow separation structure at the leading edge of the guide vanes and the suction surface. On the left side of the discharge pipe, large-scale flow separation and reverse flow happen as a result of the flow-through effect, producing a strong vortex zone. The flow field on the left side of the pressure chamber is relatively uniform, and the low-speed region on the suction surface of the guide vanes is reduced due to the reverse flow. The results of the pressure pulsation test showed that the energy of pressure pulsation in the flow passage of the guide vane occurs at the fBPF and its harmonics, and the interaction between the rotor and stator is significant. Under the same operating condition, the RMS value distribution and amplitude at fBPF of each measurement point are asymmetric in the circumferential direction. The amplitude of fBPF near the discharge pipe is lower, while the RMS value is higher. A complex flow structure is shown by the larger amplitude and RMS value of the fBPF on the left side of the pressure chamber. With the flow rate increasing, the energy at fBPF of each measurement point increases first and then decreases, while the RMS value decreases, indicating a more uniform flow field inside the pump.

With the growing demand for new energy sources, electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen production is a technology that must be vigorously promoted. Therefore, to improve the efficiency of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode, high-performance OER catalysts are essential. Given their advantages in electrocatalysis, nanoporous materials have garnered considerable attention in previous studies for OER applications. This review provides a comprehensive overview of various strategies to optimize active site utilization in nanoporous materials. These strategies include regulating pore size and porosity, constructing hierarchical nanoporous structures, and enhancing material conductivity. Additionally, it covers approaches to boost the intrinsic OER activity of nanoporous materials, such as tuning the composition of anions and cations, creating vacancies, constructing interfaces, and forming boundary active sites. While nanoporous materials offer significant potential for advancing OER, challenges remain, including difficulties in quantifying activity within nanopores, the unclear impact of nanoporous material morphology, challenges in accessing nanopore interiors with in situ techniques, and a lack of theoretical calculations on pore structure. However, these challenges also present opportunities, and we hope this review provides a fresh perspective to inspire future research.

Abstract Background Bioresorbable stents are designed to provide temporary mechanical support to the coronary arteries and then slowly degrade in vivo to avoid chronic inflammation. Zinc (Zn) is a promising material for bioresorbable stents; However, it can cause inflammation and neointimal formation after being implanted into blood vessels. Methods To improve biocompatibility of Zn, we first coated it with polydopamine (PDA), followed by immobilization of endothelial vascular growth factor (VEGF) onto the PDA coatings. Adhesion, proliferation, and phenotype maintenance of endothelial cells (ECs) on the coated Zn were evaluated in vitro. Then, a wire aortic implantation model in rats mimicking endovascular stent implantation in humans was used to assess vascular responses to the coated Zn wires in vivo. Thrombosis in aortas post Zn wire implantation, degradation of Zn wires in vivo, neointimal formation surrounding Zn wires, and macrophage infiltration and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling in the neointimas were examined. Results In vitro data showed that the PDA-coated Zn encouraged EC adhesion, spreading, proliferation, and phenotype maintenance on its surfaces. VEGF functionalization on PDA coatings further enhanced the biocompatibility of Zn to ECs. Implantation of PDA-coated Zn wires into rat aortas didn’t cause thrombosis and showed a faster blood flow than pure Zn or the Zn wires coated with VEGF alone. In addition, the PDA coating didn’t affect the degradation of Zn wires in vivo. Besides, the PDA-coated Zn wires reduced neointimal formation, increased EC coverage, decreased macrophage infiltration, and declined aggrecan accumulation in ECM. VEGF immobilization onto PDA coatings didn’t cause thrombosis and affect Zn degradation in vivo as well, and further increased the endothelization percentage as compared to PDA coating alone, thus resulting in thinner neointimas. Conclusion These results indicate that PDA coatings with VEGF immobilization would be a promising approach to functionalize Zn surfaces to increase biocompatibility, reduce inflammation, and inhibit neointimal formation after Zn implantation in vivo. Abstract Targeted public health interventions for an emerging epidemic are essential for preventing pandemics. During 2020-2022, China invested significant efforts in strict zero-COVID measures to contain outbreaks of varying scales caused by different SARS-CoV-2 variants. Based on a multi-year empirical dataset containing 131 outbreaks observed in China from April 2020 to May 2022 and simulated scenarios, we ranked the relative intervention effectiveness by their reduction in instantaneous reproduction number. We found that, overall, social distancing measures (38% reduction, 95% prediction interval 31-45%), face masks (30%, 17-42%) and close contact tracing (28%, 24-31%) were most effective. Contact tracing was crucial in containing outbreaks during the initial phases, while social distancing measures became increasingly prominent as the spread persisted. In addition, infections with higher transmissibility and a shorter latent period posed more challenges for these measures. Our findings provide quantitative evidence on the effects of public-health measures for zeroing out emerging contagions in different contexts.

Partial endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) is an intermediate phenotype observed in endothelial cells (ECs) undergoing a transition toward a mesenchymal state to support neovascularization during (patho)physiological angiogenesis. Here, we investigated the occurrence of partial EndMT in ECs under hypoxic/ischemic conditions and identified general transcription factor IIH subunit 4 (GTF2H4) as a positive regulator of this process. In addition, we discovered that GTF2H4 collaborates with its target protein excision repair cross-complementation group 3 (ERCC3) to co-regulate partial EndMT. Furthermore, by using phosphorylation proteomics and site-directed mutagenesis, we demonstrated that GTF2H4 was involved in the phosphorylation of receptor coactivator 3 (NCOA3) at serine 1330, which promoted the interaction between NCOA3 and p65, resulting in the transcriptional activation of NF-κB and the NF-κB/Snail signaling axis during partial EndMT. In vivo experiments confirmed that GTF2H4 significantly promoted partial EndMT and angiogenesis after ischemic injury. Collectively, our findings reveal that targeting GTF2H4 is promising for tissue repair and offers potential opportunities for treating hypoxic/ischemic diseases.

IntroductionPatients suffering from limb movement disorders require more complete rehabilitation treatment, and there is a huge demand for rehabilitation exoskeleton robots. Flexible and reliable motion control of exoskeleton robots is very important for patient rehabilitation.MethodsThis paper proposes a novel exoskeleton robotic system for lower limb rehabilitation. The designed lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton robot mechanism is mainly composed of the hip joint mechanism, the knee joint mechanism and the ankle joint mechanism. The forces and motion of the exoskeleton robot were analyzed in detail to determine its design parameters. The robot control system was developed to implement closed-loop position control and trajectory planning control of each joint mechanism.ResultsMultiple experiments and tests were carried out to verify robot's performance and practicality. In the robot angular response experiments, the joint mechanism could quickly adjust to different desired angles, including 15°, 30°, 45°, and 60°. In the trajectory tracking experiments, the exoskeleton robot could complete tracking movements of typical actions such as walking, standing up, sitting down, go upstairs and go downstairs, with a maximum tracking error of ±5°. Robotic wearing tests on normal people were performed to verify the assistive effects of the lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton at different stages.DiscussionThe experimental results indicated that the exoskeleton robot has excellent reliability and practicality. The application of this exoskeleton robotic system will help paralyzed patients perform some daily movements and sports.

Abstract The 3-ketoacyl-ACP synthase III (FabH), a key enzyme for bacteria growth, catalyses the last step of the initiation of bacterial fatty acid synthesis. Rice bacterial blight is caused by the pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), which is widely studied as a model bacterium. Bioinformatics analysis showed that the X. oryzae pv. oryzae PXO99A genome encodes three FabH homologous proteins with unknown functions. In this study, we found that only PXO_02706 (fabH1) encodes a functional FabH, the key enzyme in the production of branched-chain fatty acid, which is essential for the branched-chain diffusible signal factor family signals in Xoo. Interestingly, we found that FabH1 is not essential for fatty acid biosynthesis in Xoo. Pathogenicity analysis showed that loss of fabH1 caused a significant decrease in virulence of Xoo. Genetic and phenotypic analyses revealed that fabH1 plays a key role in multiple Xoo virulence-related activities, including exopolysaccharide (EPS) production, biofilm formation, motility, and resistance to environmental stresses.

Abstract Passion fruit is an essential commercial plant in the tropics and subtropics, which has lately seen a rise in demand for high-quality fruits and large-scale production. Generally, different species of passion fruit (Passiflora sp.) are propagated by sexual reproduction. However, asexual reproduction, such as stem cuttings, grafting, or tissue culture, is also available and advantageous in many instances. Recent research on passion fruit has concentrated on improving and establishing methodologies for embryogenesis, clonal proliferation via (somatic embryos), homozygote regeneration (by anther culture), germplasm preservation (via cryopreservation), and genetic transformation. These developments have resulted in potentially new directions for asexual propagation. Even though effective embryo culture and cryogenics are now available, however the limited frequency of embryogenic callus transformation to ex-vitro seedlings still restricts the substantial clonal replication of passion fruit. Here, in this review the advancement related to biotechnological approaches and the current understanding of Passiflora tissue culture. In vitro culture, organogenesis, cryopreservation, breeding, and productivity of Passiflora will significantly improve with novel propagation approaches, which could be applied to a wider range of germplasm.

Background: and purpose: To share our single-center vertebral artery stump syndrome (VASS) treatment experience and assess the role of comprehensive classification based on anatomic development, proximal conditions, and distal conditions (PAD). Materials and methods: Data were retrospectively collected from patients who underwent endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) at the Stroke Center of the First Hospital of Jilin University between January 2016 and December 2021. Among patients with acute ischemic stroke in the posterior circulation, those with acute occlusion of the intracranial arteries and occlusion at the origin of the vertebral artery confirmed by digital subtraction angiography were selected. The clinical data were summarized and analyzed. Results: Fifteen patients with VASS were enrolled in the study. The overall success rate of surgical recanalization was 80%. The successful proximal recanalization rate was 70.6%, and the recanalization rates for P1, P2, P3, and P4 were 100%, 71.4%, 50%, and 66.67%, respectively. The mean operation times for the A1 and A2 types were 124 and 120 ​min, respectively. The successful distal recanalization rate was 91.7%, and the recanalization rates for types D1, D2, D3, and D4 were 100%, 83.3%, 100%, and 100%, respectively. Five patients experienced perioperative complications (incidence rate: 33.3%). Distal embolism occurred in three patients (incidence rate: 20%). No dissection or subarachnoid hemorrhage occurred in any patient. Conclusion: EVT is a technically feasible treatment for VASS, and comprehensive PAD classification can, to a certain extent, help initially estimate the difficulty of surgery and provide guidance for interventional procedures.

This study addresses the challenges faced by coal-fired power plants in adapting to energy fluctuations following the integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid. The flexible operation of thermal power plants has become a focal point in academic research. A numerical model of a coal-fired power plant was developed in this study using the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm based on actual operation data analysis. The combined PSO-LSTM approach improved the accuracy of the model by optimizing parameters. Validation of the model was performed using a Dymola physical simulation model, demonstrating that the PSO-LSTM coupled numerical model accurately simulates coal-fired power plant operations with a goodness of fit reaching 0.998. Overall system performance for comprehensively evaluating the rate and accuracy of unit operation is proposed. Furthermore, the model’s capability to simulate the load variation process of automatic generation control (AGC) under different load command groups was assessed, aiding in optimizing the best load command group. Optimization experiments show that the performance index of output power is optimal within the experimental range when the set load starts and stops are the same and the power of load command γ = 1.8. Specifically, the 50–75% Turbine Heat Acceptance (THA) load rise process enhanced the overall system performance index by 55.1%, while the 75–50% THA load fall process improved the overall system performance index by 54.2%. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the PSO-LSTM approach in optimizing thermal power plant operations and enhancing system performance under varying load conditions.

The construction of long-span bridge bearing platforms in deep and thick silt interlayers presents challenges such as difficult pit excavation, high risk of foundation pit base uplift, ensuring the secure embedment of the foundation pit cofferdam, and the susceptibility of large-volume concrete to cracking. This paper examines the construction of the main pier bearing platform for the new Yue-Dong Bridge. It compares and selects the optimal cofferdam scheme, ultimately employing a combined cofferdam structure that integrates underwater high-pressure rotary piling for base reinforcement and steel sheet piles. An underwater high-pressure rotary piling fast reinforcement construction process was developed and implemented, alongside the “four-stage dry bottom sealing” strategy to mitigate uplift risks. To address the cracking induced by the heat of hydration in large-volume concrete, a temperature control strategy for large-volume concrete construction was proposed. Real-time monitoring of the cofferdam was conducted to ensure construction safety. Additionally, to verify the effectiveness of the temperature control measures and ensure compliance with temperature control standards, real-time temperature monitoring was also performed during the construction of the large-volume concrete bearing platform. To ensure construction safety, cofferdam displacements and stresses are monitored in real time. The practice has demonstrated that the construction scheme, strategies, and corresponding measures are effective, leading to the successful construction of the long-span bridge bearing platforms for the Yue-Dong Bridge in deep and thick silt interlayers. The key technologies developed and applied in this paper offer significant and valuable insights for the construction of similar bearing platforms.

Objective: To assess the relationship between optic disc microvasculature and renal function in subjects with diabetes mellitus without diabetic retinopathy (DR). Design: Prospective, cross-sectional study. Participants: A total 1629 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus without DR were recruited from the community of Guangzhou, China. Methods: All subjects underwent 6 mm × 6 mm OCT angiography (OCTA) centered on the optic nerve head. Four state-of-the-art microcirculation parameters, including peripapillary vessel density (PVD) in the radial peripapillary capillaries (RPC), superficial capillary plexus, deep capillary plexus (DCP), and a choriocapillaris flow void density percentage (CC FVD%) were assessed via swept-source OCTA. Primary Outcomes: Renal function was assessed by levels of microalbuminuria (MAU) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Results: Compared with non-chronic kidney disease (CKD) participants, PVD was significantly lower in subjects in the CKD group and worsened as eGFR declined. After adjustment for covariates, higher eGFR was significantly associated with higher PVD in the RPC (β = 0.01; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.01–0.02; P < 0.001), in the superficial capillary plexus (β = 0.010; 95% CI, 0.002–0.019; P = 0.020), in the DCP (β = 0.02; 95% CI, 0.01–0.03; P < 0.001), and lower CC FVD% (β = −0.01; 95% CI, −0.03 to −0.001; P = 0.040) in the entire images. After they were fully adjusted, the parameters in the inner ring of the RPC, DCP, and CC FVD% were significantly associated with MAU (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Decrease in retinal and choroidal microcirculation in the optic nerve head was independently associated with renal dysfunction. Further longitudinal studies are needed to clarify the peripapillary vessel changes during CKD progression. BackgroundParkinson’s disease (PD) symptoms deteriorate with disease progression. Although deep brain stimulation (DBS) can effectively improve the motor signs of PD patients, it is not yet known whether DBS surgery, which is an invasive treatment modality, may change the progression of PD.ObjectiveThe aim of this work was to compare the effect of DBS with that of drug treatment on the progression of PD.MethodsA total of 77 patients with PD with the Hoehn and Yahr scale (HY) stage of 2.5 or 3 were included, and were divided into 34 in the drug therapy alone group (Drug-G) and 43 in the DBS therapy group (DBS-G). All patients were subjected to a follow-up of 2 years, and disease severity was assessed by the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS-III), the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA), the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) scores. In addition, the quality of life of patients and the burden on their family were assessed by the 39-item PD questionnaire (PDQ-39) scores, daily levodopa equivalent dose (LED), patient’s annual treatment-related costs, and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (ZCBS) score. The changes in relevant scale scores between the two groups were compared at each follow-up stage.ResultsThe UPDRS-III score of the patients in the “off” state increased from year to year in both groups, and the degree of increase of this score was greater in the DBS-G than in the Drug-G group. The MOCA score in both groups began to decline in the 2nd year of follow-up, and the decline was greater in the Drug-G than in the DBS-G group. DBS treatment did not affect patients’ psychiatric disorders. The PDQ39, LED, costs, and ZCBS were negatively correlated with the follow-up time in patients in the DBS-G group, and positively correlated with the follow-up time in patients in the Drug-G.ConclusionPD is progressive regardless of treatment. The findings from this follow-up study suggest that the disease progression of patients in DBS-G may be slightly faster compared to the drug-G, but the advantages of DBS are also evident. Indeed, DBS better improves patient’s motor signs and quality of life and reduces the family burden. In addition, DBS has less impact on patients in terms of cognitive and mental effects.

PurposeThe relationship between sub-item scores on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores and prognosis and intracranial hemorrhage in patients with acute ischemic stroke undergoing endovascular treatment (EVT) has been insufficiently studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between NIHSS sub-item scores, prognosis, and intracranial hemorrhage.MethodsThis study included patients with acute anterior circulation ischemic stroke undergoing EVT between February 2019 and April 2022. The outcomes included functional independence, defined as a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score ≤ 2 at 3 months after EVT, intracranial hemorrhage within 24 h after EVT, and mortality within 3 months. A multivariate regression analysis was performed, including NIHSS sub-item scores and other adjusted variables.ResultsA total of 568 patients were enrolled. Of the 568 patients, 239 (45%) achieved functional independence at 3 months after EVT. The median age in this group was 63 years (IQR 52–69) and 176 (73.6%) were male patients. Aims: Myocardial ischemia can affect traditional right ventricular (RV) pacing parameters, but it is unclear whether coronary artery disease (CAD) impact the pacing parameters and electrophysiological characteristics of left bundle branch area pacing (LBBaP) as a physiological pacing representative. Methods: Patients who underwent coronary angiography (CAG) after/before the LBBaP procedure and underwent percutaneous coronary intervention after LBBaP procedure were divided into CAD group and Non-CAD group according to visual CAG. Pacing parameters and electrophysiological characteristics were recorded at LBBaP implantation. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was implemented to evaluate the association between CAD and higher capture threshold. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to verify result stability. Ferulic acid (FA) and ferulic acid methyl ester (FAM) are important phenolic compounds in Baijiu. In this study, the interaction of FA and FAM with human serum albumin (HSA) and lysozyme (LZM) was investigated using multispectral methods and molecular dynamics simulation. FA and FAM could interact with HSA and LZM, changing the conformation and hydrophilicity of the protein. The quenching mechanisms of FA-HSA, FA-LZM, FAM-HSA, and FAM-LZM were all static-quenching. In the FA-HSA, FAM-HSA, and FA-LZM systems, the interaction forces were mainly hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding. In the FAM-LZM system, the interaction forces were mainly hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals force. Common metal ions such as K+, Ca2+, Cu2+, Mg2+, and Mn2+ could affect the binding ability of FA and FAM to HSA and LZM. Moreover, FA and FAM could increase the stability of HSA and LZM, and the protein bound to FA/FAM was more stable than the free protein. FA and FAM had varying degrees of impact on the physiological activities of HSA and LZM. This study provides relevant information on the interactions and metabolic mechanisms of FA and its derivatives with endogenous proteins.
