This study aims to propose an indoor air quality prediction method that can be easily utilized and reflects temporal characteristics using indoor and outdoor input data measured near the indoor target point as input to calculate indoor PM2.5 concentration through a multiple linear regression model. The atmospheric conditions and air pollution detected in one-minute intervals using sensor-based monitoring equipment (Dust Mon, Sentry Co Ltd., Seoul, Korea) inside and outside houses from May 2019 to April 2021 were used to develop the prediction model. By dividing the multiple linear regression model into one-hour increments, we attempted to overcome the limitation of not representing the multiple linear regression model’s characteristics over time and limited input variables. The multiple linear regression (MLR) model classified by time unit showed an improvement in explanatory power by up to 9% compared to the existing model, and some hourly models had an explanatory power of 0.30. These results indicated that the model needs to be subdivided by time period to more accurately predict indoor PM2.5 concentrations.

The consumption of fresh produce and fruits has increased over the last few years as a result of increasing consumer awareness of healthy lifestyles. Several studies have shown that fresh produces and fruits could be potential sources of human pathogens and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this study, 248 strains were isolated from lettuce and surrounding soil samples, and 202 single isolates selected by the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting method were further characterized. From 202 strains, 184 (91.2%) could be identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, while 18 isolates (8.9%) could not be unequivocally identified. A total of 133 (69.3%) and 105 (54.7%) strains showed a resistance phenotype to ampicillin and cefoxitin, respectively, while resistance to gentamicin, tobramycin, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline occurred only at low incidences. A closer investigation of selected strains by whole genome sequencing showed that seven of the fifteen sequenced strains did not possess any genes related to acquired antibiotic resistance. In addition, only one strain possessed potentially transferable antibiotic resistance genes together with plasmid-related sequences. Therefore, this study indicates that there is a low possibility of transferring antibiotic resistance by potential pathogenic enterobacteria via fresh produce in Korea. However, with regards to public health and consumer safety, fresh produce should nevertheless be continuously monitored to detect the occurrence of foodborne pathogens and to hinder the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes potentially present in these bacteria.

A comprehensive analysis of safety and functional features of six Weissella and Periweissella type strains was performed. Our data demonstrated the probiotic potential of these species, indicating the P. beninensis type strain as the best candidate based on its potential probiotic features and the safety assessment.

Microdisplays based on organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) have a small form factor, and this can be a great advantage when applied to augmented reality and virtual reality devices. In addition, a high‐resolution microdisplay of 3000 ppi or more can be achieved when applying a white OLED structure and a color filter. However, low luminance is the weakness of an OLED‐based microdisplay as compared with other microdisplay technologies. By applying a tandem structure consisting of two separate emission layers, the efficiency of the OLED device is increased, and higher luminance can be achieved. The efficiency and white spectrum of the OLED device are affected by the position of the emitting layer in the tandem structure and calculated via optical simulation. Each white OLED device with optimized efficiency is fabricated according to the position of the emitting layer, and red, green, and blue spectrum and efficiency are confirmed after passing through color filters. The optimized white OLED device with color filters reaches 97.8% of the National Television Standards Committee standard.

In recent years, the rapid development of genetically modified (GM) technology has raised concerns about the safety of GM crops and foods for human health and the ecological environment. Gene flow from GM crops to other crops, especially in the Brassicaceae family, might pose a threat to the environment due to their weediness. Hence, finding reliable, quick, and low-cost methods to detect and monitor the presence of GM crops and crop products is important. In this study, we used visible near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy for the effective discrimination of GM and non-GM Brassica napus, B. rapa, and F1 hybrids (B. rapa X GM B. napus). Initially, Vis-NIR spectra were collected from the plants, and the spectra were preprocessed. A combination of different preprocessing methods (four methods) and various modeling approaches (eight methods) was used for effective discrimination. Among the different combinations, the Savitzky-Golay and Support Vector Machine combination was found to be an optimal model in the discrimination of GM, non-GM, and hybrid plants with the highest accuracy rate (100%). The use of a Convolutional Neural Network with Normalization resulted in 98.9%. The same higher accuracy was found in the use of Gradient Boosted Trees and Fast Large Margin approaches. Later, phenolic acid concentration among the different plants was assessed using GC-MS analysis. Partial least squares regression analysis of Vis-NIR spectra and biochemical characteristics showed significant correlations in their respective changes. The results showed that handheld Vis-NIR spectroscopy combined with chemometric analyses could be used for the effective discrimination of GM and non-GM B. napus, B. rapa, and F1 hybrids. Biochemical composition analysis can also be combined with the Vis-NIR spectra for efficient discrimination.

Background Gintonin, isolated from ginseng, acts as a ginseng-derived lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) receptor ligand and elicits the [Ca2+]i transient through six LPA receptor subtypes (LPARSs). However, the long-term effects of gintonin-enriched fraction (GEF) on the gene expression of six LPARSs remain unknown. We examined changes in the gene expression of six LPA receptors in the mouse whole brain, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen, small intestine, colon, and testis after long-term oral GEF administration. Methods C57BL/6 mice were divided into two groups: control vehicle and GEF (100 mg/kg, p.o.). After 21-day saline or GEF treatment, total RNA was extracted from nine mouse organs. Quantitative-real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and western blot were performed to quantify changes in the gene and protein expression of the six LPARSs, respectively. Results qRT-PCR analysis before GEF treatment revealed that the LPA6 RS was predominant in all organs except the small intestine. The LPA2 RS was most abundant in the small intestine. Long-term GEF administration differentially regulated the six LPARSs. Upon GEF treatment, the LPA6 RS significantly increased in the liver, small intestine, colon, and testis but decreased in the whole brain, heart, lungs, and kidneys. Western blot analysis of the LPA6 RS confirmed the differential effects of GEF on LPA6 receptor protein levels in the whole brain, liver, small intestine, and testis. Remanufacturing has emerged as a way to solve production problems, as raw material costs increase and environmental pollution caused by discarded equipment occurs. The process can extend product lifetime and prevent waste of resources. In particular, it has economical efficiency for large equipment such as GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear). The crucial points in remanufacturing are determining replaceable parts and economic valuation. To address these issues, we propose a framework for remanufacturing GIS with remaining lifetime prediction. We construct a regression model for remaining useful life (RUL) in the proposed framework using GIS sensor data. The cost of the replacement parts is estimated with the selected sensors. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, we conducted accelerated life testing on a GIS for data acquisition and applied our framework. The experimental results demonstrate that the tree-based RUL regression model outperforms the others in prediction accuracy. In the simulation of part replacement, the important sensor-based decision-making improves RUL significantly.

Reported herein are solution-processed polymer anode electrodes for blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). The highly conductive anodes were made from 10-wt%-methyl-red-(MR)-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (PH1000) films. The red-colored and uniform polymer films demonstrated electrical conductivity values that significantly increased from 0.25 to 50 S·cm−1 after doping. The more than 200-fold enhancement in conductivity indicates that the doped films have a lower sheet resistance and better hole injection and transport properties than the pristine films. The resultant PhOLEDs based on the doped polymer anodes exhibited stable, broad, and intense blue emission at 468 nm with a 2616 cd·m−2 maximum luminance and a 4 V turn-on voltage. The obtained study results confirmed the effectiveness of the MR dye as a dopant for the significant enhancement of the conductivity and effective hole injection of PEDOT:PSS. Efficient future flexible optoelectronic applications can be built using this highly conductive polymer electrode obtained via a simple, solution-processed, and cost-effective doping approach.

In this study, the genomes of the Weissella (W.) beninensis, W. diestrammenae, W. fabalis, W. fabaria, W. ghanensis, and W. uvarum type strains were sequenced and analyzed. Moreover, the ability of these strains to metabolize 95 carbohydrates was investigated, and the genetic determinants of such capability were searched within the sequenced genomes. 16S rRNA gene and genome-based-phylogeny of all the Weissella species described to date allowed a reassessment of the Weissella genus species groups. As a result, six distinct species groups within the genus, namely, W. beninensis, W. kandleri, W. confusa, W. halotolerans, W. oryzae, and W. paramesenteroides species groups, could be described. Phenotypic analyses provided further knowledge about the ability of the W. beninensis, W. ghanensis, W. fabaria, W. fabalis, W. uvarum, and W. diestrammenae type strains to metabolize certain carbohydrates and confirmed the interspecific diversity of the analyzed strains. Moreover, in many cases, the carbohydrate metabolism pathway and phylogenomic species group clustering overlapped. The novel insights provided in our study significantly improved the knowledge about the Weissella genus and allowed us to identify features that define the role of the analyzed type strains in fermentative processes and their biotechnological potential.

Thin-film transistor (TFT)-driven full-color organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with vertically stacked structures are developed herein using photolithography processes, which allow for high-resolution displays of over 2,000 pixels per inch. Vertical stacking of OLEDs by the photolithography process is technically challenging, as OLEDs are vulnerable to moisture, oxygen, solutions for photolithography processes, and temperatures over 100 °C. In this study, we develop a low-temperature processed Al2O3/SiNx bilayered protection layer, which stably protects the OLEDs from photolithography process solutions, as well as from moisture and oxygen. As a result, transparent intermediate electrodes are patterned on top of the OLED elements without degrading the OLED, thereby enabling to fabricate the vertically stacked OLED. The aperture ratio of the full-color-driven OLED pixel is approximately twice as large as conventional sub-pixel structures, due to geometric advantage, despite the TFT integration. To the best of our knowledge, we first demonstrate the TFT-driven vertically stacked full-color OLED., To realize organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with improved resolution for display applications, a method for achieving high yield device fabrication is needed. Here, the authors report vertically-stacked transistor-driven full-color OLEDs with photolithography-processed intermediate electrodes.

Slide‐ring hydrogels using polyrotaxanes have been developed as highly tough soft materials. However, they have never been used as biomaterials because of the lack of biocompatibility. Meanwhile, self‐healing hydrogels are expected to improve fatigue resistance and extend the period of use. However, owing to the lack of high mechanical strength, they are limited in their use as biomaterials. Here we first developed a biocompatible self‐healing/slide‐ring hydrogel using glycol chitosan and a water‐soluble polyrotaxane. We obtained excellent mechanical toughness and biocompatibility to promote the proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) encapsulated in the hydrogel. Owing to the rapid self‐healing property, the cell‐encapsulating gels adjusted arbitrarily, maintaining good cell proliferation function. Therefore, slide‐ring hydrogels enable the use of biomaterials for soft‐tissue engineering.

The rapid advancement of genetically modified (GM) technology over the years has raised concerns about the safety of GM crops and foods for human health and the environment. Gene flow from GM crops may be a threat to the environment. Therefore, it is critical to develop reliable, rapid, and low-cost technologies for detecting and monitoring the presence of GM crops and crop products. Here, we used visible near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy to distinguish between GM and non-GM Brassica napus, B. juncea, and F1 hybrids (B. juncea X GM B. napus). The Vis-NIR spectra were preprocessed with different preprocessing methods, namely normalization, standard normal variate, and Savitzky–Golay. Both raw and preprocessed spectra were used in combination with eight different chemometric methods for the effective discrimination of GM and non-GM plants. The standard normal variate and support vector machine combination was determined to be the most accurate model in the discrimination of GM, non-GM, and hybrid plants among the many combinations (99.4%). The use of deep learning in combination with Savitzky–Golay resulted in 99.1% classification accuracy. According to the findings, it is concluded that handheld Vis-NIR spectroscopy combined with chemometric analyses could be used to distinguish between GM and non-GM B. napus, B. juncea, and F1 hybrids.

Eggerthella lenta is a common member of the human gut microbiome. We here describe the isolation and characterization of a putative virulent bacteriophage having E. lenta as host. The double-layer agar method for isolating phages was adapted to anaerobic conditions for isolating bacteriophage PMBT5 from sewage on a strictly anaerobic E. lenta strain of intestinal origin. For this, anaerobically grown E. lenta cells were concentrated by centrifugation and used for a 24 h phage enrichment step. Subsequently, this suspension was added to anaerobically prepared top (soft) agar in Hungate tubes and further used in the double-layer agar method. Based on morphological characteristics observed by transmission electron microscopy, phage PMBT5 could be assigned to the Siphoviridae phage family. It showed an isometric head with a flexible, noncontractile tail and a distinct single 45 nm tail fiber under the baseplate. Genome sequencing and assembly resulted in one contig of 30,930 bp and a mol% GC content of 51.3, consisting of 44 predicted protein-encoding genes. Phage-related proteins could be largely identified based on their amino acid sequence, and a comparison with metagenomes in the human virome database showed that the phage genome exhibits similarity to two distantly related phages.

A novel Lactobacillus delbrueckii bacteriophage PMBT4 was isolated from the Nigerian fermented milk product nono. The phage possesses a long and thin, non-contractile tail and an isometric head, indicating that it belongs to the Siphoviridae family. A neck passage structure (`collar`), previously hypothesized to be encoded by two genes located in the Lactobacillus delbrueckii phage LL-K insertion sequence (KIS) element, as well as in two additional Lb. delbrueckii phages Ld17 and Ld25A, could also be observed on an estimated 1-5% of phage particles by transmission electron microscopy. However, neither mapping of high throughput sequencing data to KIS element genes from Lb. delbrueckii phages LL-K, Ld17 and Ld25A nor PCR amplification of the KIS element genes could corroborate the presence of these genes in the PMBT4 genome. The PMBT4 genome consists of 31,399 bp with a mol% GC content of 41.6 and exhibits high (95-96%) sequence homologies to Lb. delbrueckii phages c5, Ld3, Ld25A and Ld17, which assigned PMBT4 as a new member of this genus, i.e. the Cequinquevirus genus.

Defoliation (DF) on peach (Prunus persica L.) and Japanese apricot (Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc.) trees caused by a hailstorm in 2017, year 1, was investigated for its effects on growth and fruit yield in South Korea over four years, comparing with recovery effects of the DF trees treated with repeated immediate pruning (IP) right after the storm. Treatments included 0–10, 10–40, 40–70, and 70–100% of DF trees, with 0–10, 10–40, 40–70, and 70–100% of DF + IP trees. The hailstorms increased the damages to shoots for peaches and to shoots and scaffold for Japanese apricot trees in year 1, with fruit yield reduced more than 80% observed on 10–100 DF of both fruit species. The IP treatment increased the number of new shoots in years 2–4 but reduced shoot length and diameter of peach and Japanese apricot trees. Tree canopy in years 2–4 was reduced on 40–100 DF of peach trees and on 70–100 of DF and DF + IP of Japanese apricot trees. The 40–100 DF Japanese apricot trees resulted in a fruit yield index of less than 90% for years 2–4, which was observed on 40–100 DF+IP trees only in year 2 due to balanced tree vegetative and reproductive growth.

Ginseng-derived gintonin reportedly contains functional lysophosphatidic acids (LPAs) as LPA receptor ligands. The effect of the gintonin-enriched fraction (GEF) on in vitro and in vivo glucagon-like protein-1 (GLP-1) secretion, which is known to stimulate insulin secretion, via LPA receptor(s) remains unclear. Accordingly, we examined the effects of GEF on GLP-1 secretion using human enteroendocrine NCI-H716 cells. The expression of several of LPA receptor subtypes in NCI-H716 cells using qPCR and Western blotting was examined. LPA receptor subtype expression was in the following order: LPA6 &gt, LPA2 &gt, LPA4 &gt, LPA5 &gt, LPA1 (qPCR), and LPA6 &gt, LPA1 &gt, LPA3 &gt, LPA5 (Western blotting). GEF-stimulated GLP-1 secretion occurred in a dose- and time-dependent manner, which was suppressed by cAMP-Rp, a cAMP antagonist, but not by U73122, a phospholipase C inhibitor. Furthermore, silencing the human LPA6 receptor attenuated GEF-mediated GLP-1 secretion. In mice, low-dose GEF (50 mg/kg, peroral) increased serum GLP-1 levels, this effect was not blocked by Ki16425 co-treatment. Our findings indicate that GEF-induced GLP-1 secretion could be achieved via LPA6 receptor activation through the cAMP pathway. Hence, GEF-induced GLP secretion via LPA6 receptor regulation might be responsible for its beneficial effects on human endocrine physiology.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has become a more popular approach for quantitative and qualitative analysis of feeds, foods and medicine in conjunction with an arsenal of chemometric tools. This was the foundation for the increased importance of NIRS in other fields, like genetics and transgenic monitoring. A considerable number of studies have utilized NIRS for the effective identification and discrimination of plants and foods, especially for the identification of genetically modified crops. Few previous reviews have elaborated on the applications of NIRS in agriculture and food, but there is no comprehensive review that compares the use of NIRS in the detection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This is particularly important because, in comparison to previous technologies such as PCR and ELISA, NIRS offers several advantages, such as speed (eliminating time-consuming procedures), non-destructive/non-invasive analysis, and is inexpensive in terms of cost and maintenance. More importantly, this technique has the potential to measure multiple quality components in GMOs with reliable accuracy. In this review, we brief about the fundamentals and versatile applications of NIRS for the effective identification of GMOs in the agricultural and food systems.

The formation and pollution of particulate matter (PM), a side effect of rapid industrialization and urbanization, is considered a global issue. However, various plant species are able to effectively capture and reduce atmospheric PM concentrations. We investigated the indoor growth and morphology of 21 indigenous Korean evergreen species at low light intensities to ascertain their ability to reduce PM of aerosol particles in a closed acrylic chamber. The decrease in PM mass concentration differed significantly across species, with a significant correlation (8 h, p &lt, 0.001). The reduction in the mass concentration of PM differed with particle size and across species. The highest reduction of PM2.5 occurred after 8 h with Dryopteris lacera (86.8%), Ilex × wandoensis (84.9%), Machilus thunbergii (84.3%), and Rhododendron brachycarpum (84.0%). Reduction of PM10 after 8 h was highest with Cephalotaxus harringtonii (98.3%), I. × wandoensis (98.5%), M. thunbergii (98.5%), and R. brachycarpum (98.3%). Plant morphological characteristics (category, plant height, leaf shape, leaf area) and relative humidity were closely related to the decrease in PM mass concentration. In conclusion, our findings can be used to identify Korean plant species that can reduce PM concentration and are suitable for indoor use.

Numerous efforts have been made to achieve “on-purpose” 1-octene production since Sasol discovered a Cr-based selective ethylene tetramerization catalyst in the early 2000s. By preparing a series of bis(phosphine) ligands iPrN(PAr2)2 where the Ar contains a bulky –SiR3 substituent (Ar = −C6H4-p-Si(nBu)3 (1), −C6H4-p-Si(1-hexyl)3 (2), −C6H4-p-Si(1-octyl)3 (3), −C6H4-p-Si(2-ethylhexyl)3 (4), −C6H4-p-Si(3,7-dimethyloctyl)3 (5)), we obtained an extremely active catalyst that meets the criteria for commercial utilization. The Cr complexes [iPrN(PAr2)2−CrCl2]+[B(C6F5)4]–, obtained by reacting ligands 1–5 with [(CH3CN)4CrCl2]+[B(C6F5)4]–, showed high activity exceeding 6000 kg/g-Cr/h, when combined with the inexpensive iBu3Al, thus avoiding the use of expensive modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO). The bulky –SiR3 substituents played a key role in the success of catalysis by blocking the formation of inactive species (Cr complexes coordinated by two iPrN(PAr2)2 ligands, that is, [(iPrN(PAr2)2)2−CrCl2]+[B(C6F5)4]–). Among the complexes prepared, [3−CrCl2]+[B(C6F5)4]– exhibited the highest activity (11,100 kg/g-Cr/h, 100 kg/g-catalyst) with high 1-octene selectivity (75 wt%) and, moreover, mitigated the generation of undesired &gt, C10 fractions (10.7 wt%). A 10-g-scale synthesis of 3 was developed, as well as a facile and low-cost synthetic method for [(CH3CN)4CrCl2]+[B(C6F5)4]–.

Digital PCR (dPCR) is the third-generation PCR that enables real-time absolute quantification without reference materials. Recently, global diagnosis companies have developed new dPCR equipment. In line with the development, the Lab On An Array (LOAA) dPCR analyzer (Optolane) was launched last year. The LOAA dPCR is a semiconductor chip-based separation PCR type equipment. The LOAA dPCR includes Micro Electro Mechanical System that can be injected by partitioning the target gene into 56 to 20,000 wells. The amount of target gene per wells is digitized to 0 or 1 as the number of well gradually increases to 20,000 wells because its principle follows Poisson distribution, which allows the LOAA dPCR to perform precise absolute quantification. LOAA determined region of interest first prior to dPCR operation. To exclude invalid wells for the quantification, the LOAA dPCR has applied various filtering methods using brightness, slope, baseline, and noise filters. As the coronavirus disease 2019 has now spread around the world, needs for diagnostic equipment of point of care testing (POCT) are increasing. The LOAA dPCR is expected to be suitable for POCT diagnosis due to its compact size and high accuracy. Here, we describe the quantitative principle of the LOAA dPCR and suggest that it can be applied to various fields.

Gintonin, a novel compound of ginseng, is a ligand of the lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) receptor. The in vitro and in vivo skin wound healing effects of gintonin remain unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of gintonin on wound healing-linked responses, especially migration and proliferation, in skin keratinocytes HaCaT. In this study, 2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide assay, Boyden chamber migration assay, scratch wound healing assay, and Western blot assay were performed. A tail wound mouse model was used for the in vivo test. Gintonin increased proliferation, migration, and scratch closure in HaCaT cells. It also increased the release of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in HaCaT cells. However, these increases, induced by gintonin, were markedly blocked by treatment with Ki16425, an LPA inhibitor, PD98059, an ERK inhibitor, 1,2-Bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid tetrakis (acetoxymethyl ester), a calcium chelator, and U73122, a PLC inhibitor. The VEGF receptor inhibitor axitinib also attenuated gintonin-enhanced HaCaT cell proliferation. Gintonin increased the phosphorylation of AKT and ERK1/2 in HaCaT cells. In addition, gintonin improved tail wound healing in mice. These results indicate that gintonin may promote wound healing through LPA receptor activation and/or VEGF release-mediated downstream signaling pathways. Thus, gintonin could be a beneficial substance to facilitate skin wound healing.

Gintonin is a kind of ginseng-derived glycolipoprotein that acts as an exogenous LPA receptor ligand. Gintonin has in vitro and in vivo neuroprotective effects, however, little is known about the cellular mechanisms underlying the neuroprotection. In the present study, we aimed to clarify how gintonin attenuates iodoacetic acid (IAA)-induced oxidative stress. The mouse hippocampal cell line HT22 was used. Gintonin treatment significantly attenuated IAA-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction, ATP depletion, and cell death. However, treatment with Ki16425, an LPA1/3 receptor antagonist, suppressed the neuroprotective effects of gintonin. Gintonin elicited [Ca2⁺]i transients in HT22 cells. Gintonin-mediated [Ca2⁺]i transients through the LPA1 receptor-PLC-IP3 signaling pathway were coupled to increase both the expression and release of BDNF. The released BDNF activated the TrkB receptor. Induction of TrkB phosphorylation was further linked to Akt activation. Phosphorylated Akt reduced IAA-induced oxidative stress and increased cell survival. Our results indicate that gintonin attenuated IAA-induced oxidative stress in neuronal cells by activating the LPA1 receptor-BDNF-TrkB-Akt signaling pathway. One of the gintonin-mediated neuroprotective effects may be achieved via anti-oxidative stress in nervous systems.

We demonstrate high-performance down-conversion microlens array (DC-MLA) films for white organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The DC-MLA films are readily fabricated by an imprinting method based on breath figure patterns, which are directly formed on the polymer substrate with a novel concept. The DC-MLA films result in high-quality white light as well as enhanced light outcoupling efficiency for white OLEDs. The external quantum efficiency and power efficiency of OLEDs with DC-MLA films are increased by a factor of 1.35 and 1.86, respectively, compared to OLEDs without outcoupling films. Moreover, the white OLEDs with DC-MLA films achieve a high color-rendering index of 84.3. It is anticipated that the novel DC-MLA films fabricated by the simple imprinting process with breath figure patterns can contribute to the development of efficient white OLEDs., Graphical Abstract

Background This study aimed to evaluate the safety of raw vegetable products present on the German market regarding toxin-producing Bacillus cereus sensu lato (s.l.) group bacteria. Results A total of 147 B. cereus s.l. group strains isolated from cucumbers, carrots, herbs, salad leaves and ready-to-eat mixed salad leaves were analyzed. Their toxinogenic potential was assessed by multiplex PCR targeting the hemolysin BL (hbl) component D (hblD), non-hemolytic enterotoxin (nhe) component A (nheA), cytotoxin K-2 (cytK-2) and the cereulide (ces) toxin genes. In addition, a serological test was used to detect Hbl and Nhe toxins. On the basis of PCR and serological results, none of the strains were positive for the cereulide protein/genes, while 91.2, 83.0 and 37.4% were positive for the Hbl, Nhe and CytK toxins or their genes, respectively. Numerous strains produced multiple toxins. Generally, strains showed resistance against the β-lactam antibiotics such as penicillin G and cefotaxim (100%), as well as amoxicillin/clavulanic acid combination and ampicillin (99.3%). Most strains were susceptible to ciprofloxacin (99.3%), chloramphenicol (98.6%), amikacin (98.0%), imipenem (93.9%), erythromycin (91.8%), gentamicin (88.4%), tetracycline (76.2%) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole combination (52.4%). The genomes of eight selected strains were sequenced. The toxin gene profiles detected by PCR and serological test mostly agreed with those from whole-genome sequence data. Conclusions Our study showed that B. cereus s.l. strains encoding toxin genes occur in products sold on the German market and that these may pose a health risk to the consumer if present at elevated levels. Furthermore, a small percentage of these strains harbor antibiotic resistance genes. The presence of these bacteria in fresh produce should, therefore, be monitored to guarantee their safety.

Microdisplay is a key technology for realizing augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) devices, which have attracted much attention of late. Even though the operating voltage in the tandem structure is higher than that in the single structure, 2-stack tandem OLED exhibited 20,000 cd/m2 at 9 V, which is compatible with CMOS circuit driving. Due to its top-emitting geometry with a tandem structure, the OLED device with a well-controlled thickness exhibited a white spectrum with (0.26, 0.26) color coordinates. The pixel density of the fabricated microdisplay panel with a white tandem OLED was about 2350 pixels per inch, and the active area of the panel was 0.7 inch diagonally. The resolution of the panel was 1280 × 1024, corresponding to SXGA, and the maximal luminance was 3,000 cd/m2.

More than 300 million people worldwide experience depression; annually, ~800,000 people die by suicide. Unfortunately, conventional interview-based diagnosis is insufficient to accurately predict a psychiatric status. We developed machine learning models to predict depression and suicide risk using blood methylome and transcriptome data from 56 suicide attempters (SAs), 39 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 87 healthy controls. Our random forest classifiers showed accuracies of 92.6% in distinguishing SAs from MDD patients, 87.3% in distinguishing MDD patients from controls, and 86.7% in distinguishing SAs from controls. We also developed regression models for predicting psychiatric scales with R2 values of 0.961 and 0.943 for Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression–17 and Scale for Suicide Ideation, respectively. Multi-omics data were used to construct psychiatric status prediction models for improved mental health treatment.

Supra-celiac aortic cross clamping is often utilized during aortic reconstruction for aneurysmal/occlusive disease involving the pararenal aorta. However, this may be accompanied a myriad of complications related to hemodynamic disturbances, cardiopulmonary compromise and hepatic ischemia. Supra-mesenteric aortic cross clamping may be an excellent option in selected patients with suitable anatomy to minimize or avoid these complications. Herein, the merits of and technical tips for supra-mesenteric aortic cross clamping are discussed.

The precise understanding and control of microenvironmental cues could be used to optimize the efficacy of cell therapeutics. Here, we show that mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) singly coated with a soft conformal gel presenting defined chemomechanical cues promote matrix remodelling by secreting soluble interstitial collagenases in response to the presence of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). In mice with fibrotic lung injury, treatment with the coated MSCs maintained normal collagen levels, fibre density and microelasticity in lung tissue, and the continuous presentation of recombinant TNF-α in the gel facilitated the reversal of aberrant tissue remodelling by the cells when inflammation subsided in the host. Gel coatings with predefined chemomechanical cues could be used to tailor cells with specific mechanisms of action for desired therapeutic outcomes. Mesenchymal stromal cells singly coated with a soft conformal gel incorporating specific chemomechanical cues inhibit aberrant tissue remodelling in mice with fibrotic lung injury.

There is controversy over the usefulness of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) as a prostate cancer (PCa) biomarker. This controversy arises when there are differences in the results of PSA assay modalities. In this study, which aimed to evaluate a proper validation between the two PSA assay modalities, the agreement between the results of the two modalities was analyzed. PSA examinations were conducted using two PSA assay modalities in 4810 patients. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and weighted kappa analysis were used to evaluate the agreement between the two assay modalities. A linear regression was performed to evaluate the association between the two assay modalities. According to ICC values (ICC: 0.999, p &lt, 0.001) and weighted kappa analysis values (kappa: 0.951, alpha’s standard error (ASE): 0.001, p &lt, 0.0001), the agreement between the assay modalities was rated as excellent. However, the strength of agreement was poor in the following PSA sub-groups: 0.05–0.1 ng/mL (ICC: 0.281, p = 0.0860), 0.15–0.2 ng/mL (ICC: 0.288, p = 0.0036), 1.5–2.0 ng/mL (ICC: 0.360, p = 0.0860), and 2.0–2.5 ng/mL (ICC: 0.303, p = 0.0868). In linear regression analysis, when modality B PSA yielded a value of 0.2 ng/mL, the expected value for modality A was 0.258 ng/mL (95% CI: 0.255–0.260), and when modality B PSA yielded a value of 4 ng/mL, the expected value for modality A was 3.192 ng/mL (95% CI: 3.150–3.235). The difference in the PSA values between the two PSA assay modalities is confirmed, and this difference may be clinically meaningful.

Selaginella tamariscina is a medicinal plant that contains a variety of plant secondary metabolites, however, it is currently being collected indiscriminately from its native habitats. Hence, we have developed an efficient propagation method for S. tamariscina. Explants grown in vitro were cultured in Murashige and Skoog medium of various strengths (1/16–2x), and the highest number of sporophytes (65.7) were obtained with 1/4x MS medium. Culturing explants at various lengths (3–12 mm) for 12 weeks indicated 12 mm as the most appropriate size for sporophyte propagation. We then evaluated various concentrations of individual components, sucrose (0–5%), total nitrogen (7.5–30 mM), nitrogen ratio (3:0–0:3), and agar (0.6–0.8%), in the 1/4x MS medium for explant growth for 12 weeks. The maximum number of sporophytes were formed in media containing 3% sucrose, 15 mM nitrogen, and 0.6% agar, with a nitrogen ratio of 1:2. The propagated S. tamariscina was then acclimatized in a controlled environment to improve survival in an external environment. These results demonstrate the effective conditions for in vitro mass propagation of S. tamariscina, finding that methods utilizing sporophytes were more efficient than conventional propagation methods and yielded numerous plants in a short period.

Background & Aims Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) and pancreatic β cells require receptor tyrosine kinase (KIT) to develop and function properly. Degeneration of ICCs is linked to diabetic gastroparesis. The mechanisms linking diabetes and gastroparesis are unclear, but may involve microRNA (miRNA)-mediated post-transcriptional gene silencing in KIT+ cells. Methods We performed miRNA-sequencing analysis from isolated ICCs in diabetic mice and plasma from patients with idiopathic and diabetic gastroparesis. miR-10b-5p target genes were identified and validated in mouse and human cell lines. For loss-of-function studies, we used KIT+ cell-restricted mir-10b knockout mice and KIT+ cell depletion mice. For gain-of-function studies, a synthetic miR-10b-5p mimic was injected in multiple diabetic mouse models. We compared the efficacy of miR-10b-5p mimic treatment vs antidiabetic and prokinetic medicines. Results miR-10b-5p is highly expressed in ICCs from healthy mice, but drastically depleted in ICCs from diabetic mice. A conditional knockout of mir-10b in KIT+ cells or depletion of KIT+ cells in mice leads to degeneration of β cells and ICCs, resulting in diabetes and gastroparesis. miR-10b-5p targets the transcription factor Kruppel-like factor 11 (KLF11), which negatively regulates KIT expression. The miR-10b-5p mimic or Klf11 small interfering RNAs injected into mir-10b knockout mice, diet-induced diabetic mice, and TALLYHO polygenic diabetic mice rescue the diabetes and gastroparesis phenotype for an extended period of time. Furthermore, the miR-10b-5p mimic is more effective in improving glucose homoeostasis and gastrointestinal motility compared with common antidiabetic and prokinetic medications. Conclusions miR-10b-5p is a key regulator in diabetes and gastrointestinal dysmotility via the KLF11-KIT pathway. Restoration of miR-10b-5p may provide therapeutic benefits for these disorders.
