Abstract

In the present paper, we explore effects on the human of exposure to a visual virtual environment which has been enslaved to simulate the human user's head movements or eye movements. Specifically, we have studied the capacity of our experimental subjects to maintain stable spatial orientation in the context of moving their entire visible surroundings by using the parameters of the subjects' natural movements. Our index of the subjects' spatial orientation was the extent of involuntary sways of the body while attempting to stand still, as measured by translations and rotations of the head. We also observed, informally, their symptoms of motion sickness.

Abstract

NEXT-MM is a general-purpose high pressure (10 bar, $\sim25$ l active volume) Xenon-based TPC, read out in charge mode with an 8 cm $\times$8 cm-segmented 700 cm$^2$ plane (1152 ch) of the latest microbulk-Micromegas technology. It has been recently commissioned at University of Zaragoza as part of the R&D of the NEXT $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiment, although the experiment's first stage is currently being built based on a SiPM/PMT-readout concept relying on electroluminescence. Around 2 million events were collected during the last months, stemming from the low energy $\gamma$-rays emitted by a $^{241}$Am source when interacting with the Xenon gas ($\epsilon$ = 26, 30, 59.5 keV). The localized nature of such events above atmospheric pressure, the long drift times, as well as the possibility to determine their production time from the associated $\alpha$ particle in coincidence, allow the extraction of primordial properties of the TPC filling gas, namely the drift velocity, diffusion and attachment coefficients. In this work we focus on the little explored combination of Xe and trimethylamine (TMA) for which, in particular, such properties are largely unknown. This gas mixture offers potential advantages over pure Xenon when aimed at Rare Event Searches, mainly due to its Penning characteristics, wave-length shifting properties and reduced diffusion, and it is being actively investigated by our collaboration. The chamber is currently operated at 2.7 bar, as an intermediate step towards the envisaged 10 bar. We report here its performance as well as a first implementation of the calibration procedures that have allowed the extension of the previously reported energy resolution to the whole readout plane (10.6%FWHM@30keV)., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The NEXT experiment aims to observe the neutrinoless double beta decay of xenon in a high-pressure Xe136 gas TPC using electroluminescence (EL) to amplify the signal from ionization. One of the main advantages of this technology is the possibility to reconstruct the topology of events with energies close to Qbb. This paper presents the first demonstration that the topology provides extra handles to reject background events using data obtained with the NEXT-DEMO prototype. Single electrons resulting from the interactions of Na22 1275 keV gammas and electron-positron pairs produced by conversions of gammas from the Th228 decay chain were used to represent the background and the signal in a double beta decay. These data were used to develop algorithms for the reconstruction of tracks and the identification of the energy deposited at the end-points, providing an extra background rejection factor of 24.3 +- 1.4 (stat.)%, while maintaining an efficiency of 66.7 +- 0.6 (stat.)% for signal events. Abstract

The NEXT experiment aims to observe the neutrinoless double beta decay of 136Xe in a high-pressure xenon gas TPC using electroluminescence (EL) to amplify the signal from ionization. Understanding the response of the detector is imperative in achieving a consistent and well understood energy measurement. The abundance of xenon K-shell X-ray emission during data taking has been identified as a multitool for the characterisation of the fundamental parameters of the gas as well as the equalisation of the response of the detector. The NEXT-DEMO prototype is a 1.5 kg volume TPC filled with natural xenon. It employs an array of 19 PMTs as an energy plane and of 256 SiPMs as a tracking plane with the TPC light tube and SiPM surfaces being coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) which acts as a wavelength shifter for the VUV scintillation light produced by xenon. This paper presents the measurement of the properties of the drift of electrons in the TPC, the effects of the EL production region, and the extraction of position dependent correction constants using Ka X-ray deposits. These constants were used to equalise the response of the detector to deposits left by gammas from 22Na. Abstract

NEXT-DEMO is a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 detector, an electroluminescent time projection chamber that will search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Xe-136 using 100-150 kg of enriched xenon gas. NEXT-DEMO was built to prove the expected performance of NEXT-100, namely, energy resolution better than 1% FWHM at 2.5MeV and event topological reconstruction. In this paper we describe the prototype and its initial results. A resolution of 1.75% FWHM at 511 keV (which extrapolates to 0.8% FWHM at 2.5 MeV) was obtained at 10 bar pressure using a gamma-ray calibration source. Abstract

We have investigated the possibility of calibrating the PMTs of scintillation detectors, using the primary scintillation produced by X-rays to induce single photoelectron response of the PMT. The high-energy tail of this response, can be approximated to an exponential function, under some conditions. In these cases, it is possible to determine the average gain for each PMT biasing voltage from the inverse of the exponent of the exponential fit to the tail, which can be done even if the background and/or noise cover-up most of the distribution. We have compared our results with those obtained by the commonly used single electron response (SER) method, which uses a LED to induce a single photoelectron response of the PMT and determines the peak position of such response, relative to the pedestal peak (the electronic noise peak, which corresponds to 0 photoelectrons). The results of the exponential fit method agree with those obtained by the SER method when the average number of photoelectrons reaching the first dynode per light/scintillation pulse is around 1.0. The SER method has higher precision, while the exponential fit method has the advantage of being useful in situations where the PMT is already in situ, being difficult or even impossible to apply the SER method, e.g. in sealed scintillator/PMT devices., 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

NEXT-100 experiment aims at searching the neutrinoless double-beta decay of the Xe-136 isotope using a TPC filled with a 100 kg of high-pressure gaseous xenon, with 90% isotopic enrichment. The experiment will take place at the Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc (LSC), Spain. NEXT-100 uses electroluminescence (EL) technology for energy measurement with a resolution better than 1% FWHM. The gaseous xenon in the TPC additionally allows the tracks of the two beta particles to be recorded, which are expected to have a length of up to 30 cm at 10 bar pressure. The ability to record the topological signature of the neutrinoless double-beta events provides a powerful background rejection factor for the double-beta experiment. In this paper, we present a novel 3D imaging concept using SiPMs coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) for the EL read out and its first implementation in NEXT-DEMO, a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 experiment. The design and the first characterization measurements of the NEXT-DEMO SiPM tracking system are presented. The SiPM response uniformity over the tracking plane drawn from its gain map is shown to be better than 4%. An automated active control system for the stabilization of the SiPMs gain was developed, based on the voltage supply compensation of the gain drifts. The gain is shown to be stabilized within 0.2% relative variation around its nominal value, provided by Hamamatsu, in a temperature range of 10 degree C. The noise level from the electronics and the SiPM dark noise is shown to lay typically below the level of 10 photoelectrons (pe) in the ADC. Hence, a detection threshold at 10 pe is set for the acquisition of the tracking signals. The ADC full dynamic range (4096 channels) is shown to be adequate for signal levels of up to 200 pe/microsecond, which enables recording most of the tracking signals., Comment: Submitted to JINST

Abstract

We synthesized wild and stocked pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus capture data collected in four recovery areas of the Missouri River during 1998-2007, providing the first basin-wide analysis of size structure, growth, and condition. Proportional size distribution (PSD) values ranged from 20 to 33 and were indicative of past stockings given the continued lack of natural recruitment. A new weight-length regression derived from 2268 captured wild (8%), hatchery-stocked (75%), and unknown origin (16%) pallid sturgeon had a significantly lower slope and intercept from a previously published model that used only 214 wild fish and a truncated size range. Relative condition ( K) declined after stocking throughout the basin but stabilized at 0.94 within 3 years. Spatially, K of juvenile pallid sturgeon (330-629 mm) was generally highest in the reaches of the Missouri River with large tributaries. In accordance with the latitudinal counter gradient growth hypothesis, similar absolute growth increments (both length and weight) of tagged age-1 pallid sturgeon in the Upper and Lower Missouri River indicated upstream fish grew at faster rates given the 1.3 fold difference in growing season length. From North to South, von Bertalanffy growth coefficients ( k) showed a latitudinal increase while L decreased, providing additional support of the latitudinal counter gradient growth hypothesis. However, growth rates of tagged juvenile pallid sturgeon aged 2-6 years were highest at the two most downstream reaches showing an increased influence of growing season length. In the Missouri River, pallid sturgeon (≤ ages 1-9 or 10 years) exhibited linear growth in the two most upstream reaches (Montana and North Dakota), exhibited logistic growth in the inter-reservoir reach in South Dakota/Nebraska while a power function best described growth downstream of the lowermost dam (Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri). Differing growth models among reaches highlights the confounding affect of habitat fragmentation by dams in the Missouri River on growth as well as potential latitudinal affects on sexual maturation. Relative condition and growth of pallid sturgeon appears adequate throughout the Missouri River indicating success of past stocking efforts to forestall extirpation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-hundred and seven adult shovelnose sturgeon ranging from 450 to 718 mm in length were sampled from June to October 2001 and May to July 2002 to determine diet composition and feeding patterns in the lower Platte River. Shovelnose sturgeon fed primarily upon aquatic insect larvae and nymphs (>99% composition by number). Diptera of the family Chironomidae were the dominant prey items in both years and composed 98.1% of the shovelnose sturgeon diet in 2001 and 96.8% in 2002. Chironomidae were primarily represented by the four genera Paracladopelma, Chernovskiia, Saetheria and Robackia accounting for 90.2% of the ingested prey items in 2001 and 83.6% in 2002. In addition, shovelnose sturgeon showed in both years a generalized feeding pattern towards Ephemeroptera of the families Isonychiidae and Caenidae, as well as Trichoptera of the family Hydropsychidae. Other aquatic insects, terrestrial invertebrates and fishes were found infrequently and in low numbers in shovelnose sturgeon diets. The four most abundant Chironomidae genera are often found on sand and the high abundance of these taxa in the diet suggests that shovelnose sturgeon feed primarily near or on this substrate type. This highlights the importance of habitats that provide sand substrate for shovelnose sturgeon foraging in the lower Platte River. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

35. Bisphenol a blood and saliva levels prior to and after dental sealant placement in adults.

Abstract

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of a widely used (Delton Pit & Fissure Sealant - Light Cure Opaque, DENTSPLY Professional, York, PA) pit and fissure sealant material on bisphenol A (BPA) levels in blood and saliva, among both low and high-dose groups over time. METHODS: A convenience sample of 30 adults from the Old Dominion University population were randomly and evenly divided into 2 independent variable groups: a low-dose group (1 occlusal sealant application) and high-dose group (4 occlusal sealant applications). A 2 group, time series design was used to examine the presence and concentration of BPA in serum and saliva after sealant placement. Differences comparing low-dose and high-dose groups were examined 1 hour prior (baseline), 1 hour post, 3 hours post and 24 hours after sealant placement, as measured by a direct-competitive BPA Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA). Hypothesized outcomes were evaluated by applying a parametric, 2 way ANOVA for repeated measures technique to data on the 30 participants ranging in age from 18 to 40 years, and were of mixed gender and ethnicity. RESULTS: BPA was detected in the saliva of all participants prior to sealant placement and ranged from 0.07 to 6.00 ng/ml at baseline. Salivary BPA concentration levels peaked over a 3 hour period following sealant placement and returned to baseline levels within 24 hours. BPA was significantly elevated at all post-sealant placement time periods for both the low-dose (1 occlusal sealant application) and high-dose (4 occlusal sealant applications) groups with peak levels of 3.98 ng/ml and 9.08 ng/ml, respectively. The blood serum did not contain BPA at any point in this investigation. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to BPA from sources other than dental resins contributes to salivary baseline concentration levels and indicates environmental exposure and use of products containing BPA. Use of specific molecular formulations of dental sealant material determines the release of BPA, therefore, dental sealant materials should be reviewed independently when questioning the release of BPA from dental sealants. In addition, dosage amounts of the dental sealant material used in this study do not influence the serum concentration levels of BPA. Abstract

We compared the effectiveness of passive gill nets, hoop nets, set lines, and drifted trammel nets, towed beam trawls and otter trawls to develop criteria to best determine the mean catch per unit effort (CPUE) for juvenile pallid sturgeon ( Scaphirhynchus albus) based on selectivity and seasonal efficiency in various habitats of the Missouri River downstream of Fort Randall Dam, South Dakota. Sampling occurred from April to November in 2003 and 2004 and from March to November in 2005. We captured 29 juvenile pallid sturgeon in a total of 498 overnight gill net sets, 55 in 870 drifted trammel nets, 19 on 1683 set lines, and six in 166 otter trawl tows. No pallid sturgeon were captured in 515 beam trawl tows or 520 overnight hoop net sets. Seasonal trends in mean CPUE were found and the relative precision was the greatest in October and November for gill nets, in August for trammel nets, in April for set lines, and in October for otter trawls. A higher proportion of pallid sturgeon captures for gill nets were in the inside bend macrohabitat generally associated with lower water velocities, trammel nets over sand substrate and in the outside bend macrohabitat typically associated with higher water velocities and greater depths, set lines in lower water velocities, and otter trawls in depths >2.5 m and over sand substrate. Although we found trends among seasons and habitats for gill nets, trammel nets, set lines, and otter trawls, the catch rates were low and annual point estimates of relative abundance are not adequate to detect changes in relative abundance of juvenile pallid sturgeon in this reach of the Missouri River. Independently, gill nets, trammel nets, and otter trawls likely captured the size structure of the population of pallid sturgeon in the Missouri River downstream of Fort Randall Dam. Based on our results, a standardized protocol can now be established to systematically monitor juvenile pallid sturgeon, an essential element for determining responses to recovery efforts in the Missouri River. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the condition, size structure, and growth of shovelnose sturgeon ( Scaphirhynchus platorynchus) in the lower Platte River, Nebraska. A total of 1338 shovelnose sturgeon was collected using drifted gill and trammel nets (n = 954), trot lines (n = 340), and benthic trawls (n = 44) in the spring, summer, and autumn from four reaches: (i) Two Rivers State Park, (ii) confluence of Platte and Elkhorn rivers (iii) Louisville, Nebraska, and (iv) confluence of Platte and Missouri rivers during the spring, summer, and autumn of 2000 through 2004. Structural and condition indices were compared among reaches and years. Incremental relative stock densities (RSD) for shovelnose sturgeon sampled throughout the entire lower Platte River were: stock-quality (1), quality-preferred (12), preferred-memorable (82), and memorable-trophy (5). Proportional stock values were >99 for all years. A significance was detected in RSD categories among reaches and years with larger length-categories observed in the upstream reaches. Mean relative weight (W r) for all shovelnose sturgeon was 86.5, indicating a fit population. Mean W r showed no significant differences among years, but significance was detected among reaches and RSD categories. Shovelnose sturgeon in the lower Platte River appear to be in good condition and exhibit different length-frequency distributions longitudinally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Little is known about the diet of the endangered pallid sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus albus. Because of this endangered status non-lethal methods to ascertain their food habits must be evaluated. Tests of pulsed gastric lavage (PGL) were conducted on shovelnose sturgeon S. platorynchus, as a surrogate for the pallid sturgeon, to determine if PGL negatively affected their survival. Nine sequential trials containing eight shovelnose sturgeon (N = 72) were conducted with wild fish collected from the Platte River near Louisville, Nebraska. Each trial group was placed into one of two tanks, with each tank containing three pulsed gastric lavaged fish and one control fish. Fish were weighed, measured, and tagged with a passive integrated transponder (PIT tag) before being transported to holding tanks for acclimation and PGL treatment. Sturgeon were acclimated 4–6 days prior to PGL, then held for 15 days after treatment. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, and nitrite were monitored daily. No significant difference between the survival of PGL fish and control fish was detected. Because the test required these fish to endure the additional stress of transport and handling, PGL seems a viable technique that can be safely used to evaluate food habits of shovelnose sturgeon, and could be considered safe for pallid sturgeon food habit studies. Abstract

Female Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), from the sterile-male rearing facility in El Pino, Guatemala, were exposed to broadcasts of wing-fanning vibrations recorded from males engaged in calling behavior to investigate the feasibility of developing a female-selective acoustic trap. The recorded signals had frequent amplitude fluctuations and peak frequencies ≈350 Hz, typical of signals observed in previous studies of Mediterranean fruit fly acoustic behavior. Females did not exhibit long-distance phonotaxis, but remained near a speaker significantly longer when the sounds were broadcast at 103-107 dB than when the speaker was silent. In addition, significantly higher percentages of females were captured by yellow adhesive traps next to a broadcasting speaker than by traps next to a silent mimic. Additional bioassays were conducted with synthetic, 350-Hz tones produced by a thermoacoustic tube as well as with silent mimics of the different sound sources to examine the relative responsiveness of female Mediterranean fruit flies to traps with different acoustic and visual features. The visual attributes of the different sound source assemblies significantly affected capture rates. The range over which the broadcast significantly increased the percentage of female captures was <0.5 m, which may limit the utility of these acoustic cues in large-scale trapping programs. However, the findings of this study do justify further testing of whether optimized short-range acoustic signals could be used to augment longer range pheromonal and visual cues to improve the efficacy of female-selective traps. Abstract

Notwithstanding ethical rules that address therapeutic and forensic role conflicts for psychologists and psychiatrists, overzealous patient advocacy by therapists, tightened reimbursement for therapy, and a growth market for forensic psychology and psychiatry, have led many therapists to appear willingly as forensic experts on behalf of their patients. Existing ethical rules, as well as other proposed approaches to address this problem, assume that it can be resolved by modest changes in existing practice that permit therapists to testify as long as their testimony avoids psycholegal opinions. This essay questions whether these modest changes can adequately address this problem and advances consideration of a more radical proposal to address this problem, prohibiting therapists from testifying about their patients.
