We present the first ultrafast mid-infrared study of charge and spin-ordered nickelates. A sub-picosecond modulation of the optical reflectivity is observed, indicating the filling and subsequent re-establishment of the pseudogap in the time-domain.

The development of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has launched a new era in X-ray science by providing ultrafast coherent X-ray pulses with a peak brightness that is approximately one billion times higher than previous X-ray sources. The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) facility at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the world's first hard X-ray FEL, has already demonstrated a tremendous scientific impact across broad areas of science. Here, a few of the more recent representative highlights from LCLS are presented in the areas of atomic, molecular, and optical science; chemistry; condensed matter physics; matter in extreme conditions; and biology. This paper also outlines the near term upgrade (LCLS-II) and motivating science opportunities for ultrafast X-rays in the 0.25-5 keV range at repetition rates up to 1 MHz. Future plans to extend the X-ray energy reach to beyond 13 keV (<1 Å) at high repetition rate (LCLS-II-HE) are envisioned, motivated by compelling new science of structural dynamics at the atomic scale. Photo-excitation can drive strongly correlated electron insulators into competing conducting phases, resulting in giant and ultrafast changes of their electronic and magnetic properties. The underlying non-equilibrium dynamics involve many degrees of freedom at once, whereby sufficiently short optical pulses can trigger the corresponding collective modes of the solid along temporally coherent pathways. The characteristic frequencies of these modes range between the few GHz of acoustic vibrations to the tens or even hundreds of THz for purely electronic excitations. Virtually all experiments so far have used 100 fs or longer pulses, detecting only comparatively slow lattice dynamics. Here, we use sub-10-fs optical pulses to study the photo-induced insulator–metal transition in the magnetoresistive manganite Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3. At room temperature, we find that the time-dependent pathway towards the metallic phase is accompanied by coherent 31 THz oscillations of the optical reflectivity, significantly faster than all lattice vibrations. These high-frequency oscillations are suggestive of coherent orbital waves, crystal-field excitations triggered here by impulsive stimulated Raman scattering. Orbital waves are likely to be initially localized to the small polarons of this room-temperature manganite, coupling to other degrees of freedom at longer times, as photo-domains coalesce into a metallic phase. X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) produce femtosecond x-ray pulses with unprecedented intensities that are uniquely suited for studying many phenomena in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics. A compilation of the current developments at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and future plans for the LCLS-II and Next Generation Light Source (NGLS) are outlined. The AMO instrumentation at LCLS and its performance parameters are summarized. A few selected experiments representing the rapidly developing field of ultra-fast and peak intensity x-ray AMO sciences are discussed. These examples include fundamental aspects of intense x-ray interaction with atoms, nonlinear atomic physics in the x-ray regime, double core-hole spectroscopy, quantum control experiments with FELs and ultra-fast x-ray induced dynamics in clusters. These experiments illustrate the fundamental aspects of the interaction of intense short pulses of x-rays with atoms, molecules and clusters that are probed by electron and ion spectroscopies as well as ultra-fast x-ray scattering. We study the photoinduced insulator-metal transition in VO2, correlating its threshold and dynamics with excitation wavelength. In single crystals, switching can only be induced with photon energies above the 670 meV gap. This contrasts with the case of polycrystalline films, where formation of the metallic state can be initiated also with photon energies as low as 180 meV, which are well below the bandgap. Perfection of this process may become conducive to schemes for optical switches, limiters, and detectors operating at room temperature in the mid-infrared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heterogeneity is intrinsic to the dynamic process of a chemical reaction. As reactants are converted to products via intermediates, the nature and extent of heterogeneity vary temporally throughout the duration of the reaction and spatially across the molecular ensemble. The goal of many biophysical techniques, including crystallography and spectroscopy, is to establish a reaction trajectory that follows an experimentally provoked dynamic process. It is essential to properly analyze and resolve heterogeneity inevitably embedded in experimental datasets. We have developed a deconvolution technique based on singular value decomposition (SVD), which we have rigorously practiced in diverse research projects. In this review, we recapitulate the motivation and challenges in addressing the heterogeneity problem and lay out the mathematical foundation of our methodology that enables isolation of chemically sensible structural signals. We also present a few case studies to demonstrate the concept and outcome of the SVD-based deconvolution. Finally, we highlight a few recent studies with mechanistic insights made possible by heterogeneity deconvolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Excited carrier dynamics in GaAs and Al0.2Ga0.8As are investigated using femtosecond pump and continuum probe techniques. We observe absorption spectral hole burning arising from excited carriers generated by transitions from the split-off band as well as the heavy- and light-hole bands. Transient absorption saturation measurements indicate that the initial nonthermal carrier distribution thermalizes on a time scale of several tens of femtoseconds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Femtosecond time-resolved absorption spectroscopy measurements were performed on polydiacetylene 15-8 and polydiacetylene p-toluene sulfonate. The relaxation of the singlet exciton was measured to be a two-component process with an initial relaxation in ∼95 fs followed by complete recovery in ∼1.5 ps. Experimental characterization of the structural, electronic and dynamic properties of dilute systems in aqueous solvents, such as nanoparticles, molecules and proteins, are nowadays an open challenge. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is probably one of the most established approaches to this aim as it is element-specific. However, typical dilute systems of interest are often composed of light elements that require extreme-ultraviolet to soft X-ray photons. In this spectral regime, water and other solvents are rather opaque, thus demanding radical reduction of the solvent volume and removal of the liquid to minimize background absorption. Here, we present an experimental endstation designed to operate a liquid flat jet of sub-micrometre thickness in a vacuum environment compatible with extreme ultraviolet/soft XAS measurements in transmission geometry. The apparatus developed can be easily connected to synchrotron and free-electron-laser user-facility beamlines dedicated to XAS experiments. The conditions for stable generation and control of the liquid flat jet are analyzed and discussed. Preliminary soft XAS measurements on some test solutions are shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use quantum-classical trajectories to investigate the origin of the different photoisomerization quantum efficiency observed in the dim-light visual pigment Rhodopsin and in the light-driven biomimetic molecular rotor paramethoxy N-methyl indanylidene-pyrrolinium (MeO-NAIP) in methanol. Our results reveal that effective light-energy conversion requires, in general, an auxiliary molecular vibration (called promoter) that does not correspond to the rotary motion but synchronizes with it at specific times. They also reveal that Nature has designed Rhodopsin to exploit two mechanisms working in a vibrationally coherent regime. The first uses a wag promoter to ensure that ca. 75% of the absorbed photons lead to unidirectional rotations. The second mechanism ensures that the same process is fast enough to avoid directional randomization. It is found that MeO-NAIP in methanol is incapable of exploiting the above mechanisms resulting into a 50% quantum efficiency loss. However, when the solvent is removed, MeO-NAIP rotation is predicted to synchronize with a ring-inversion promoter leading to a 30% increase in quantum efficiency and, therefore, biomimetic behavior. The Femtosecond X-ray Experiments (FXE) instrument at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (EuXFEL) provides an optimized platform for investigations of ultrafast physical, chemical and biological processes. It operates in the energy range 4.7-20 keVaccommodating flexible and versatile environments for a wide range of samples using diverse ultrafast X-ray spectroscopic, scattering and diffraction techniques. FXE is particularly suitable for experiments taking advantage of the sub-MHz repetition rates provided by the EuXFEL. In this paper a dedicated setup for studies on ultrafast biological and chemical dynamics in solution phase at sub-MHz rates at FXE is presented. Particular emphasis on the different liquid jet sample delivery options and their performance is given. Our portfolio of high-speed jets compatible with sub- MHz experiments includes cylindrical jets, gas dynamic virtual nozzles and flat jets. The capability to perform multi-color X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) experiments is illustrated by a set of measurements using the dispersive X-ray spectrometer in von Hamos geometry. Static XES data collected using a multicrystal scanning Johann-type spectrometer are also presented. A few examples of experimental results on ultrafast time-resolved X-ray emission spectroscopy and wide-angle X-ray scattering at sub-MHz pulse repetition rates are given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The diversity of the retinal-containing proteins (rhodopsins) in nature is extremely large. Fundamental similarity of the structure and photochemical properties unites them into one family. However, there is still a debate about the origin of retinal-containing proteins: divergent or convergent evolution? In this review, based on the results of our own and literature data, a comparative analysis of the similarities and differences in the photoconversion of the rhodopsin of types I and II is carried out. The results of experimental studies of the forward and reverse photoreactions of the bacteriorhodopsin (type I) and visual rhodopsin (type II) rhodopsins in the femto- and picosecond time scale, photo-reversible reaction of the octopus rhodopsin (type II), photovoltaic reactions, as well as quantum chemical calculations of the forward photoreactions of bacteriorhodopsin and visual rhodopsin are presented. Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between the in-plane Cu spins in YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) superconductor when it is grown on top of ferromagnetic La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) manganite layer. This coupling, present in both normal and superconducting states of YBCO, is sensitive to the interfacial termination such that it is only observed in bilayers with MnO2 but not with La0.7Ca0.3O interfacial termination. Such contrasting behaviors, we propose, are due to distinct energetic of CuO chain and CuO2 plane at the La0.7Ca0.3O and MnO2 terminated interfaces respectively, therefore influencing the transfer of spin-polarized electrons from manganite to cuprate differently. Our findings suggest that the superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers with proper interfacial engineering can be good candidates for searching the theorized Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in cuprates and studying the competing quantum orders in highly correlated electron systems. The results of study of the behavior of surface plasmon polaritons in the layered structure of a VO2‒SiO2-graphene-based hyperbolic metasurface under the influence of an external magnetic field before and at the beginning of the phase transition of vanadium dioxide are presented. As a result of calculations, it is shown how the isofrequency contour of surface plasmons changes taking into account the different direction of the external magnetic field. It is also shown how an external magnetic field affects the direction of static magnetization caused by the inverse Faraday effect. This work can offer additional ways to control the behavior of surface plasmons, as well as become the basis for the study of new self-adjusting structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Niobium dioxide (NbO2) exhibits metal-insulator transition (Mott transition) and shows the potential for application in memristors and neuromorphic devices. Presently growth of NbO2 thin films requires high-temperature reduction of Nb2O5 films using H2 or sophisticated techniques such as molecular beam epitaxy and pulsed laser deposition. The present study demonstrates a simple chemical route of the direct growth of crystalline NbO2 films by chemical vapor deposition using a freshly prepared Nb-hexadecylamine (Nb-HDA) complex. X-ray diffraction studies confirm the NbO2 phase with a distorted rutile body-centered-tetragonal structure and the film grown with a highly preferred orientation on c -sapphire. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the +4 oxidation state. The present method offers facile growth of NbO2 films without post-reduction steps which will be assumed to be a cost-effective process for NbO2 based devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Temporally short X-ray pulses are an indispensable tool for the study of electron transitions close to the Fermi energy and structural changes in molecules undergoing chemical reactions which take place on a time-scale of hundreds of femtoseconds. The time resolution of experiments at 3 rd generation light sources which produce intense synchrotron radiation is limited fundamentally by the electron-bunch length in the range of tens of picoseconds. Here we propose a new scheme for the generation of intense and coherent sub-femtoseconds soft X-ray pulses in storage rings by applying the Echo-Enabled Harmonic Generation (EEHG) method. Many issues for obtaining the EEHG structure such as two modulators and a radiator are solved by a paradigm shift in an achromatic storage ring cell. Numerical demonstration of the feasibility of the scheme for the BESSY II beam parameters is presented.

Design-specific control over excited-state dynamics is necessary for any application seeking to convert light into chemical potential. Such control is especially desirable in iron(II)-based chromophores, which are an Earth-abundant option for a wide range of photo-induced electron-transfer applications including solar energy conversion 1 and catalysis 2 . However, the sub-200-femtosecond lifetimes of the redox-active metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states typically encountered in these compounds have largely precluded their widespread use 3 . Here we show that the MLCT lifetime of an iron(II) complex can be manipulated using information from excited-state quantum coherences as a guide to implementing synthetic modifications that can disrupt the reaction coordinate associated with MLCT decay. We developed a structurally tunable molecular platform in which vibronic coherences-that is, coherences reflecting a coupling of vibrational and electronic degrees of freedom-were observed in ultrafast time-resolved absorption measurements after MLCT excitation of the molecule. Following visualization of the vibrational modes associated with these coherences, we synthetically modified an iron(II) chromophore to interfere with these specific atomic motions. The redesigned compound exhibits a MLCT lifetime that is more than a factor of 20 longer than that of the parent compound, indicating that the structural modification at least partially decoupled these degrees of freedom from the population dynamics associated with the electronic-state evolution of the system. These results demonstrate that using excited-state coherence data may be used to tailor ultrafast excited-state dynamics through targeted synthetic design.

Femtosecond transient soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a very promising technique that can be employed at X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) to investigate out-of-equilibrium dynamics for material and energy research. Here, a dedicated setup for soft X-rays available at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL) is presented. It consists of a beam-splitting off-axis zone plate (BOZ) used in transmission to create three copies of the incoming beam, which are used to measure the transmitted intensity through the excited and unexcited sample, as well as to monitor the incoming intensity. Since these three intensity signals are detected shot by shot and simultaneously, this setup allows normalized shot-by-shot analysis of the transmission. For photon detection, an imaging detector capable of recording up to 800 images at 4.5 MHz frame rate during the FEL burst is employed, and allows a photonshot-noise-limited sensitivity to be approached. Mott insulator material, as a kind of strongly correlated electronic system with the characteristic of a drastic change in electrical conductivity, shows excellent application prospects in neuromorphological calculations and has attracted significant attention in the scientific community. Especially, computing systems based on Mott insulators can overcome the bottleneck of separated data storage and calculation in traditional artificial intelligence systems based on the von Neumann architecture, with the potential to save energy, increase operation speed, improve integration, scalability, and three-dimensionally stacked, and more suitable to neuromorphic computing than a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor. In this review, we have reviewed Mott insulator materials, methods for driving Mott insulator transformation (pressure-, voltage-, and temperature-driven approaches), and recent relevant applications in neuromorphic calculations. The results in this review provide a path for further study of the applications in neuromorphic calculations based on Mott insulator materials and the related devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
