Abstract Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) intelligent diagnosis promises to elevate clinical efficiency and facilitate timely TMD management for patients. However, development of TMD intelligent diagnostic tools with high accuracy and sensitivity presents challenges, particularly in sensing minute deformations and ensuring rapid self-recovery. Here we report a biocompatible hydrogel electronic sensor with instantaneous self-recovery (within 2.1 s) and ultra-low detection limit (0.005% strain). It could efficiently diagnose disc displacement with reduction (DDwR) with satisfactory accuracy of 90.00%, and also had a clear indication of the typical clinical manifestations of DDwR and the timing of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) clicking, with a sensitivity of up to 100% in human compared to the diagnostic criteria for TMD (DC/TMD). Furthermore, a predictive model based on waveform features achieved 84.4% accuracy and 86% sensitivity, reducing dependence on physicians. In summary, the hydrogel sensor is expected to become a radiation-free, non-invasive, practical and effective tool for future TMD diagnosis.

China, as the world's largest producer and consumer of fruits, is transitioning to quality development. In the increasingly competitive food industry, innovative IP-based approaches can create unique cultural symbols for fruit-based foods. This study analyzes the current state of fruit food IP image design both domestically and internationally. Eye-tracking experiments were conducted to identify user visual attention focus. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was adopted to construct an element framework for capturing the core elements of fruit food IP images. By solving attribute weights and clarifying user needs, qualitative and quantitative methods were combined to transform subjective concepts into measurable data. The visual experience of fruit food IP images was deeply explored through key attributes such as brand visual symbols, brand tone, and style evolution. Finally, innovative pathways for domestic fruit food IP image design were proposed.

Abstract Background Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), a highly invasive malignancy with a poor prognosis, is one of the most common cancers globally. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have become key regulators of human malignancies, but further studies are necessary to fully understand their functions and possible causes in HNSCC. Methods CircCCT2 expression levels in HNSCC tissues and cells were measured via qPCR. CircCCT2 was characterized by Sanger sequencing, qRT-PCR, RNase R & Actinomycin D treatment, nucleoplasmic separation and FISH experiments. CCK-8 and colony formation assays were performed to determine cell proliferation, and Transwell assays were used to determine migration and invasion. A xenograft tumor model was used to study the influence of circCCT2 on HNSCC in vivo. Dual-luciferase gene reporter, RIP, western blotting, and rescue experiments, were used to explore target-binding relationships and regulatory mechanisms. Results CircCCT2 was significantly upregulated in HNSCC tissues and cells. High circCCT2 levels were associated with advanced T stage, N stage, clinical stage and poor prognosis. Functionally, we verified that circCCT2 promotes HNSCC development in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, functioning as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) or miRNA sponge, circCCT2 binds directly to miR-146a-5p and increases interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 1 (IRAK1) levels, which enhances the malignant development of HNSCC by driving epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Conclusion CircCCT2 promotes HNSCC development through the miR-146a-5p/IRAK1 axis, revealing that circCCT2 is a potential biomarker and target for HNSCC.

Abstract Recovery from spinal cord injury (SCI) is often impeded by neuroinflammation, scar formation, and limited axonal regeneration. To tackle these issues, we developed an innovative biomimetic drug delivery system using liquid nitrogen-treated M2 macrophages (LNT M2) which internalized paclitaxel (PTX) nanoparticles beforehand. These were incorporated into a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) scaffold, creating a multifunctional, injectable treatment for single-dose administration. The LNT M2 inherited the inflammatory factor/chemokine receptors from the living M2 macrophages and thus possessing significant inflammatory neutralizing effect. In addition, the scaffold provides slow, sustained release of PTX, promoting axonal regeneration and suppressing scar formation in SCI rats. The LNT M2-based dual-functional scaffold significantly enhances motor function, reduces neuroinflammation, and accelerates axonal regeneration by modulating the inflammatory microenvironment and preventing the formation of glial and fibrotic scars. This approach combines the regenerative effects of low-dose PTX with the immunoregulatory properties of LNT M2, leading to remarkable neurological recovery in SCI rats. Moreover, the scaffold’s straightforward preparation, ease of standardization, and “ready-to-use” nature make it a promising candidate for acute SCI intervention and future clinical applications. Schwann cell transplantation is considered one of the most promising cell-based therapy to repair injured spinal cord due to its unique growth-promoting and myelin-forming properties. A the Food and Drug Administration-approved Phase I clinical trial has been conducted to evaluate the safety of transplanted human autologous Schwann cells to treat patients with spinal cord injury. A major challenge for Schwann cell transplantation is that grafted Schwann cells are confined within the lesion cavity, and they do not migrate into the host environment due to the inhibitory barrier formed by injury-induced glial scar, thus limiting axonal reentry into the host spinal cord. Here we introduce a combinatorial strategy by suppressing the inhibitory extracellular environment with injection of lentivirus-mediated transfection of chondroitinase ABC gene at the rostral and caudal borders of the lesion site and simultaneously leveraging the repair capacity of transplanted Schwann cells in adult rats following a mid-thoracic contusive spinal cord injury. We report that when the glial scar was degraded by chondroitinase ABC at the rostral and caudal lesion borders, Schwann cells migrated for considerable distances in both rostral and caudal directions. Such Schwann cell migration led to enhanced axonal regrowth, including the serotonergic and dopaminergic axons originating from supraspinal regions, and promoted recovery of locomotor and urinary bladder functions. Importantly, the Schwann cell survival and axonal regrowth persisted up to 6 months after the injury, even when treatment was delayed for 3 months to mimic chronic spinal cord injury. These findings collectively show promising evidence for a combinatorial strategy with chondroitinase ABC and Schwann cells in promoting remodeling and recovery of function following spinal cord injury.

Abstract With the improvement of industry, the connectivity of electronic devices gradually shift from wired to wireless. As a solution for power delivery, the non-contact power transfer holds promising ways to charge for moving terminals, enabling battery-free sensing, processing, and communication. Based on a dual-band metasurface, this study proposes an adaptive wireless-powered network (AWPN) to realize the simultaneous wireless localization and non-contact power supply. It first achieves localization with 3 cm resolution on a single-input single-output (SISO) system, by combining space-time-coding (STC) and convolutional neural network (CNN). With precise position information, AWPN real-time aligns power beams to the terminals for stable energy transmission. Then, battery-free terminals enable to perceive the environmental data and uploads the results. From the measurement results, AWPN gets more than 98% CNN classification accuracy and can tolerate certain environmental changes. Thus, being adaptive and contactless, our study will propel the advancement in Internet of Things (IoT), intelligent metasurface, and the robot industry.

AIM: To assess the clinical presentations and outcomes of idiopathic orbital inflammatory pseudotumor (IOIP) patients with orbital wall bone destruction (OWBD) and to propose an expanded classification system that includes bone destruction. METHODS: The study retrospectively reviewed clinical presentations, imaging findings, treatment modalities, and outcomes of six patients diagnosed histopathologically with IOIP and OWBD at the Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University between October 2018 and June 2021. RESULTS: Over two years, 6 (10%) of 60 IOIP patients at our hospital exhibited OWBD, but this may overrepresent severe cases. The cohort consisted of three men and three women, aged 17 to 60y (mean 35.5±16.1y). Presenting symptoms included proptosis, eyelid swelling, decreased visual acuity with pain, and palpable mass. Imaging revealed multiple anatomical structures involved with the medial wall being the most common site of bone destruction. Histopathological examination showed classic type in five patients and sclerosing type in one patient. All patients underwent surgical resection followed by methylprednisolone treatment. Follow-up (mean 30.3±3.1mo) indicated three patients had no recurrence, while others had varying degrees of symptom persistence or recurrence. CONCLUSION: IOIP with bone destruction is a rare but significant subtype that mimics malignancy, leading to potential diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Our findings suggest that complete surgical resection combined with adjunctive glucocorticoid therapy can yield favorable outcomes. However, larger-scale studies are needed to further optimize therapeutic approaches.

Objectives: Clostridioides difficile ranks among the primary sources of healthcare-related infections and diarrhoea in numerous nations. We evaluated the drug susceptibility and resistance mechanisms of C. difficile isolates from a hospital in Chongqing, China, and identified resistance rates and resistance mechanisms that differed from previous findings. Methods: The toxin genes and drug resistance genes of clinical strains were detected using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and these strains were subjected to Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST). The agar dilution technique was employed for assessing susceptibility of antibiotics. Clinical data collection was completed through a review of electronic medical records. Results: A total of 67 strains of toxin-producing C. difficile were detected. All C. difficile isolates demonstrated susceptibility to both metronidazole and vancomycin. However, resistance was observed in 8.95%, 16.42%, 56.72%, 56.72%, 31.34% and 5.97% of the isolates for tigecycline, tetracycline, clindamycin, erythromycin, moxifloxacin and rifampin, respectively. Among the strains with toxin genotypes A + B + CDT - and belonging to the ST3, six strains exhibited reduced susceptibility to tigecycline (MIC=0.5mg/L) and tetracycline (MIC=8mg/L). The tetA(P) and tetB(P) genes were present in these six strains, but were absent in tetracycline-resistant strains. Resistance genes (ermB, tetM, tetA(P) and tetB(P)) and mutations (in gyrA, gyrB, and rpoB) were identified in resistant strains. Conclusions: In contrast to prior studies, we found higher proportions of ST3 isolates with decreased tigecycline sensitivity, sharing similar resistance patterns and resistance genes. In the resistance process of tigecycline and tetracycline, the tetA(P) and tetB(P) genes may play a weak role.

Clinical research associates (CRAs) are the sponsor’s representatives, monitor the process and quality of clinical trials, their professional quality can affect the quality of clinical trials. But there is a conflict between the large number of CRAs personnel and unsatisfactory quality of clinical trial monitoring, and the reason is unknown. Therefore, our study investigated the occupational status of CRAs through a questionnaire survey. A total of 401 eligible questionnaires were included in the final analysis. Lipids play crucial roles in signal transduction. Lipid metabolism is associated with several transcriptional regulators, including peroxisome proliferator activated receptor γ, sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1, and acetyl-CoA carboxylase. In recent years, increasing evidence has suggested that members of the histone deacetylase (HDAC) family play key roles in lipid metabolism. However, the mechanisms by which each member of this family regulates lipid metabolism remain unclear. This review discusses the latest research on the roles played by HDACs in fat metabolism. The role of HDACs in obesity, diabetes, and atherosclerosis has also been discussed. In addition, the interaction of HDACs with the gut microbiome and circadian rhythm has been reviewed, and the future development trend in HDACs has been predicted, which may potentiate therapeutic application of targeted HDACs in related metabolic diseases.

Given the current situation that the evaluation system of the deformation and instability failure of 3DPC is immature, this study was devoted to shaping the performance of 3DPC to provide new ideas and ways for exploring the stable forming of 3DPC. The relationship between the deformation in different directions and the number of layers was analysed. The deformation regulation of 3DPC was revealed, and the controllable index was determined. Results show that the vertical and horizontal deformation in the plastic state is correlated to evaluate the overall deformation by considering only the lateral deformation. The horizontal and vertical deformation of each layer decreases as the number of layers increases, forming a trapezoidal shape. The relationship between the horizontal deformation and the number of layers varies with the shape of the printed component. This relationship follows a linear pattern in the vertical direction and remains independent of the printing shape. The deformation process of 3DPC can be divided into three stages: linear deformation, elastoplastic, and plastic failure. The elastoplastic stage is identified as the primary stage, and the horizontal deformation begins here. Comparatively, the horizontal strain is more suitable for evaluating the plasticity of 3DPC than the vertical strain.

Abstract Ethylene regulates plant growth, development, and stress adaptation. However, the early signaling events following ethylene perception, particularly in the regulation of ethylene receptor/CTRs (CONSTITUTIVE TRIPLE RESPONSE) complex, remains less understood. Here, utilizing the rapid phospho-shift of rice OsCTR2 in response to ethylene as a sensitive readout for signal activation, we revealed that MHZ3, previously identified as a stabilizer of ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE 2 (OsEIN2), is crucial for maintaining OsCTR2 phosphorylation. Genetically, both functional MHZ3 and ethylene receptors prove essential for OsCTR2 phosphorylation. MHZ3 physically interacts with both subfamily I and II ethylene receptors, e.g., OsERS2 and OsETR2 respectively, stabilizing their association with OsCTR2 and thereby maintaining OsCTR2 activity. Ethylene treatment disrupts the interactions within the protein complex MHZ3/receptors/OsCTR2, reducing OsCTR2 phosphorylation and initiating downstream signaling. Our study unveils the dual role of MHZ3 in fine-tuning ethylene signaling activation, providing insights into the initial stages of the ethylene signaling cascade.

IntroductionCardiovascular diseases include myocardial infarction, a high mortality disease. Myocardial infarction patients are becoming younger, typically defined as patients under 45 years of age. This study analyzes the relevant papers on myocardial infarction in youth in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) between 1980 and 2023.MethodsIt uses bibliometric methods to systematically understand the current status and development trend of research in this field. We searched the WoSCC between 1980 and 2023 for research papers and reviews on myocardial infarction in youth. We set the screening criteria for language as English and used tools such as Citespace, SCImago Graphica, and VOS Viewer to analyze the selected literature exhaustively. This comprehensive approach helped us gain a comprehensive understanding of research hotspots, academic partnerships, and trends in the field.ResultsFrom the WoSCC, we identified 790 publications related to myocardial infarction in youth. First, the United States, Italy, and China are major contributors to international cooperation. The United States plays a vital bridging role. Next, in the scholars' combined contribution power analysis, Krumholz and Donfrio were the key contributors in this field. In addition, popular research directions are based on age. As a result of the literature cluster analysis, we found that myocardial infarction in youth is associated with gender, smoking, coagulation factors, apolipoproteins, and gene polymorphisms.ConclusionThis is the first comprehensive bibliometric study of myocardial infarction in youth. It aims to examine the current status and trends in myocardial infarction in youth. As a result, the study results will provide researchers with an overview of emerging trends.

Microplastics and phthalates are prevalent and emerging pollutants that pose a potential impact on human health. Previous studies suggest that both microplastics and phthalates can adversely affect the reproductive systems of humans and mammals. However, the combined impact of these pollutants on the female reproductive system remains unclear. Here we show the impacts of exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) on female Sprague-Dawley rats’ reproductive systems. We find that co-exposure to PS-MPs and DEHP results in a marked increase in cystic and atretic follicles, oxidative stress, fibrosis, and dysregulation of serum sex hormone homeostasis in the ovaries of the rats. Proteomic analysis identified differentially expressed proteins that were predominantly enriched in signaling pathways related to fatty acid metabolism and tight junctions, regulated by transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1). We further confirm that co-exposure to DEHP and PS-MPs activates the TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway, and inhibiting this pathway alleviates oxidative stress, hormonal dysregulation, and ovarian fibrosis. These results indicate that exposure to the combination of microplastics and phthalates leads to a significant increase in atretic follicles and may increase the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Our study provides new insights into the reproductive toxicity effects of microplastics and DEHP exposure on female mammals, highlighting the potential link between environmental pollutants and the occurrence of PCOS. These findings highlight the need for comprehensive assessments of the reproductive health risks posed by microplastic pollution to women and contribute to the scientific basis for evaluating such risks.

BackgroundKnee osteoarthritis (KOA) presents a significant public health challenge due to its hazards and increasingly severe trends. Addressing this challenge requires targeted investigation into the prevalence and identification of risk factors for KOA across different regions, especially in populous and vast China. Therefore, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in Nanjing, China, with the aim of investigating the prevalence and risk factors of KOA among individuals aged 50 and above.MethodA total of 1,045 subjects were selected using the stratified random sampling method and diagnosed with KOA based on the diagnostic criteria established by the Chinese Medical Association. Data on 14 potential risk factors were collected through a self-designed questionnaire and standardized on-site tests. The association between KOA and these risk factors was explored using t-tests, Chi-square tests, and logistic regression analysis.ResultsThe prevalence of KOA among the subjects was 23.64%. Multiple logistic regression models indicated that the risk of KOA was significantly higher among women (OR: 5.34, 95% CI: 3.13–9.11), subjects aged 60–69 (OR: 1.83, 95% CI: 1.25–2.69) and over 70 (OR: 2.87, 95% CI: 1.80–4.59), individuals with high school education and above (OR:2.22, 95% CI: 1.37–3.60), those with flatfoot (OR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.10–2.74), and subjects classified as overweight (OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.21–3.04) and obese (OR: 4.63, 95% CI: 2.18–9.85) based on their BMI status. Additionally, the models identified weight (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01–1.08), 30-s chair stand performance (OR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.91–0.97), and single-leg stand performance (OR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.93–0.99) as independent risk factors for KOA.ConclusionThe prevalence of KOA is remarkable in Nanjing city. The risk factors for KOA include women, older age, higher education, flatfoot, increased weight and BMI, as well as poor performance in 30-s chair stand and single-leg stand tests.

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to combine proteomics and metabolomics to evaluate the immune system of short‐track speed skaters (STSS) before and after a training course. Our research focused on changes in urinary proteins and metabolites that have the potential to serve as indicators for training load. Methods Urine samples were collected from 21 elite STSS (13 male and 8 female) of the China National Team before and immediately after one training course. First‐beat sports sensor was used to monitor the training load. Proteomic detection was performed using a Thermo UltiMate 3000 ultra high performence chromatography nano liquid chromatograph and an Orbitrap Exploris 480 mass spectrometer. AIM: To explore the role of positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) examination in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular adnexal mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (OAML). METHODS: The general clinical data, postoperative PET-CT results, treatment regimens, and the prognosis of 21 histopathologically confirmed OAML patients between October 2017 and September 2021 were collected. Among the 21 patients, five patients underwent surgical treatment alone, 13 patients underwent surgical treatment combined with radiotherapy, and three patients underwent surgical treatment combined with chemotherapy. RESULTS: The follow-up period ranged from 8 to 79mo, with four cases of recurrence and no deaths. Through PET-CT examination, two patients exhibited both local ocular metabolic elevation and systemic metastasis, and one of these patients had cervical lymph node metastasis, while the other had submandibular and parotid gland metastasis. Nine patients showed only local ocular metabolic elevation, while 10 patients had no abnormal metabolic activity locally. CONCLUSION: PET-CT examination plays a crucial role in detecting residual lesions and recurrence following tumor resection, aiding in precise disease staging, and facilitating the development of personalized treatment plans, ultimately improving patient prognosis.

Abstract Background Increasing attention is being paid to the environmental and health impacts of nanoplastics (NPs) pollution. Exposure to nanoplastics (NPs) with different charges and functional groups may have different adverse effects after ingestion by organisms, yet the potential ramifications on mammalian blood glucose levels, and the risk of diabetes remain unexplored. Results Mice were exposed to PS-NPs/COOH/NH2 at a dose of 5 mg/kg/day for nine weeks, either alone or in a T2DM model. The findings demonstrated that exposure to PS-NPs modified by different functional groups caused a notable rise in fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels, glucose intolerance, and insulin resistance in a mouse model of T2DM. Exposure to PS-NPs-NH2 alone can also lead the above effects to a certain degree. PS-NPs exposure could induce glycogen accumulation and hepatocellular edema, as well as injury to the pancreas. Comparing the effect of different functional groups or charges on T2DM, the PS-NPs-NH2 group exhibited the most significant FBG elevation, glycogen accumulation, and insulin resistance. The phosphorylation of AKT and FoxO1 was found to be inhibited by PS-NPs exposure. Treatment with SC79, the selective AKT activator was shown to effectively rescue this process and attenuate T2DM like lesions. Conclusions Exposure to PS-NPs with different functional groups (charges) induced T2DM-like lesions. Amino-modified PS-NPs cause more serious T2DM-like lesions than pristine PS-NPs or carboxyl functionalized PS-NPs. The underlying mechanisms involved the inhibition of P-AKT/P-FoxO1. This study highlights the potential risk of NPs pollution on T2DM, and provides a new perspective for evaluating the impact of plastics aging.

Apple replant disease (ARD) has been observed to cause 50% mortality in fields where apples are replanted, which has seriously limited the sustainable development of China's apple industry. Our previous study revealed that Fusarium oxysporum is one of the causal agents of ARD; however, its pathogenic mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we obtained the draft genome of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. malus HS2 using a combination of long-read single-molecule real-time sequencing technology (Pacific Biosciences [PacBio]) and MGISEQ sequencing. The total length of the assembled was 56,825,273 bp, and the GC content was 47.72%. The genome provides a valuable resource for facilitating our understanding the response of F. oxysporum to apple. Solvation properties are key for understanding the interactions between solvents and solutes, making them critical for optimizing chemical synthesis and biochemical applications. Designable solvents for targeted optimization of these end-uses could, therefore, play a big role in the future of the relevant industries. The tailorable nature of protic ionic liquids (PILs) as designable solvents makes them ideal candidates. By alteration of their constituent structural groups, their solvation properties can be tuned as required. The solvation properties are determined by the polar and non-polar interactions of the PIL, but they remain relatively unknown for PILs as compared to aprotic ILs and their characterization is non-trivial. Here, we use solvatochromic dyes as probe molecules to investigate the solvation properties of nine previously uncharacterized alkyl- and dialkylammonium PILs. These properties include the Kamlet–Aboud–Taft (KAT) parameters: π* (dipolarity/polarizability), α (H-bond acidity) and β (H-bond basicity), along with the ET(30) scale (electrophilicity/polarizability). We then used molecular dynamics simulations to calculate the radial distribution functions (RDF) of 21 PILs, which were correlated to their solvation properties and liquid nanostructure. It was identified that the hydroxyl groups on the PIL cation increase α, π* and ET(30), and correspondingly increase the cation–anion distance in their RDF plots. The hydroxyl group, therefore, reduces the strength of the ionic interaction but increases the polarizability of the ions. An increase in the alkyl chain length on the cation led to a decrease in the distances between cations, while also increasing the β value. The effect of the anion on the PIL solvation properties was found to be variable, with the nitrate anion greatly increasing π*, α and anion–anion distances. The research presented herein advances the understanding of PIL structure–property relationships while also showcasing the complimentary use of molecular dynamics simulations and solvatochromic analysis together.
