Over the recent years, the detection and determination of level of pollutant in environment have become indispensable. This allows for the adoption of various methods to evade the pollution caused by these toxicant entities. This has enhanced the interest of researchers to develop sustainable sensors to determine the trace level concentration of harmful target species. Although the list of these pollutants is undoubtedly too long, toxic metal ions, like Pb2+ ions beyond certain limit, can severely endanger the whole ecosystem. Therefore, the present study is dedicated toward the development of Pb2+ ion-selective electrode based on the membrane of zinc oxide/polyaniline nanocomposites. Nanocomposite assembly was synthesized using in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization method and characterized using spectroscopic techniques, such as energy‐dispersive spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, etc. The proposed potentiometric sensor exhibits excellent selectivity toward Pb2+ ions with detection limit of 2.239 × 10−6 M, Nernstian slope of 23.31 ± 2.5 mV decade−1 and a wide linear concentration range of 1.0 × 10−5 M to 1.0 × 10−1 M. Moreover, the designed Pb2+ ion-selective electrode was successfully examined for its practical applicability in Pb2+−EDTA complexometric titration as well as potentiometric determination of concentration of Pb2+ ions in real-life samples. Bacterial pathogens are responsible for a variety of human diseases, necessitating their prompt detection for effective diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Over recent years, electrochemical methods have gained significant attention owing to their exceptional sensitivity and rapidity. This review outlines the current landscape of electrochemical biosensors employed in clinical diagnostics for the detection of bacterial pathogens. We categorize these biosensors into four types: amperometry, potentiometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and conductometry, targeting various bacterial components, including toxins, virulence factors, metabolic activity, and events related to bacterial adhesion and invasion. We discuss the merits and challenges associated with electrochemical methods, underscoring their rapid response, high sensitivity, and specificity, while acknowledging the necessity for skilled operators and potential interference from biological and environmental factors. Furthermore, we examine future prospects and potential applications of electrochemical biosensors in clinical diagnostics. While electrochemical biosensors offer a promising avenue for detecting bacterial pathogens, further research in optimizing the robustness and surmounting the challenges hindering their seamless integration into clinical practice is imperative. This study focused on developing an advanced bitterness sensor designed to minimize interference from common anions such as nitrate (NO3−) and iodide (I−) by incorporating partially dissociated amine compounds into the sensor membrane. The conventional bitter sensor (C00) uses fully dissociated quaternary ammonium salt tetradecyl ammonium bromide (TDAB), which typically exhibits high responses to these anions, leading to inaccurate bitterness assessments. To address this issue, we explored the use of three partially dissociated amines—oleylamine (OAm), dioctadecylamine (DODA), and tridodecylamine (TDA)—as lipids in the membrane components. We fabricated sensor membranes and tested their ion selectivity, interference resistance to anion, and sensitivity to iso-alpha acids (IAAs), representative bitter compounds in beer. The results showed that the membranes with partially dissociated amines significantly reduced anion interference. Notably, the sensitivity of the TDA membrane to IAAs was 80.4 mV/dec in concentration, exceeding the 68.5 mV/dec of the TDAB membrane. This enhanced sensitivity, coupled with reduced anion interference, reveals a novel property of partially dissociated lipids in taste sensors, distinguishing them from fully dissociated lipids. This study investigated the use of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC)/chitosan (Chit) polyelectrolyte complex as a stabilizing agent for Pickering emulsions. We demonstrated that chitosan reduces the surface charge of CNC improving the emulsification process. An optimal stabilizing complex containing 1% chitosan results in emulsions with minimal zeta potential (3.2 ± 0.3 mV), droplet size (2.8 ± 0.8 μm), and creaming index (19.8 ± 1.0%) values, along with high stability during storage, a change in pH, and high centrifugal forces (up to 2000 g). The study also showed that the maximum neutralized surface charge of the CNC in the CNC-Chit complex allows for effective adsorption on the surface of sunflower oil droplets, producing a denser stabilizing layer with a smaller droplet size. Additionally, chitosan addition is linked to improved stability and higher viscosity, with little dependence on ionic strength and temperature. Potentiometric titration revealed that compared with sulfated CNCs, five times less chitosan is needed to neutralize the negative surface charge of acetylated CNC. The wettability of a hydrophilic surface depends on the surface charge of the complex, and the wettability and adhesion performance increase with increasing chitosan content. A modified carbon paste sensor based on N,N′-(((ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(pyridine-2-amine; BPA Schiff base as Cr(III) selective carrier was fabricated and studied in this work. The proposed sensor homogenization and mechanism of action was studied by infra-red (IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) tools. The sensor covered 1.0 × 10−7–1.0 × 10–1 mol L−1 linear range and a detection limit of 7.22 × 10–8 mol L−1 for Cr(III) with 20.17 ± 0.13 mV decade−1 Nernstian slope. 5 s was the response time of the prepared sensor and it was reproducible and stable for 3 months. The working pH range was 3.3–6.0 and it also works well to determine Cr(III) ion in presence of water miscible solvents up to 12.5% content of the methanol and 17.5% of ethanol. The electrode's selectivity was studied using separate and mixed solution methods for selectivity coefficients determination and the sensor showed good selectivity relative to a variety of metal ions (selectivity coefficients = 1.01 × 10−5–8.57 × 10−3). In addition, the practical analysis value of the sensor was demonstrated by measurement of Cr(III) quantitatively in mineral water, supplement and also as an indicator electrode in Cr(III) against EDTA potentiometric titration with good reproducibility (RSDs of 0.91–2.15%). The increasing emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens due to antibiotic misuse translates into obstinate infections with high morbidity and high-cost hospitalizations. To oppose these MDR superbugs, new antimicrobial options are necessary. Although both quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) and phosphonium salts (QPSs) possess antimicrobial effects, QPSs have been studied to a lesser extent. Recently, we successfully reported the bacteriostatic and cytotoxic effects of a triphenyl phosphonium salt against MDR isolates of the Enterococcus and Staphylococcus genera. Here, aiming at finding new antibacterial devices possibly active toward a broader spectrum of clinically relevant bacteria responsible for severe human infections, we synthesized a water-soluble, sterically hindered quaternary phosphonium salt (BPPB). It encompasses two triphenyl phosphonium groups linked by a C12 alkyl chain, thus embodying the characteristics of molecules known as bola-amphiphiles. BPPB was characterized by ATR-FTIR, NMR, and UV spectroscopy, FIA-MS (ESI), elemental analysis, and potentiometric titrations. Optical and DLS analyses evidenced BPPB tendency to self-forming spherical vesicles of 45 nm (DLS) in dilute solution, tending to form larger aggregates in concentrate solution (DLS and optical microscope), having a positive zeta potential (+18 mV). The antibacterial effects of BPPB were, for the first time, assessed against fifty clinical isolates of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative species. Excellent antibacterial effects were observed for all strains tested, involving all the most concerning species included in ESKAPE bacteria. The lowest MICs were 0.250 µg/mL, while the highest ones (32 µg/mL) were observed for MDR Gram-negative metallo-β-lactamase-producing bacteria and/or species resistant also to colistin, carbapenems, cefiderocol, and therefore intractable with currently available antibiotics. Moreover, when administered to HepG2 human hepatic and Cos-7 monkey kidney cell lines, BPPB showed selectivity indices > 10 for all Gram-positive isolates and for clinically relevant Gram-negative superbugs such as those of E. coli species, thus being very promising for clinical development. The different structural‐type zeolites (FER, MFI, FAU, BEA) are investigated as catalysts in (bio)isobutanol conversion into linear butenes. The zeolites' structure and morphology are confirmed by XRD, N2 (77 K) ad(de)sorption, SEM, EDX, XPS, and 27Al, 29Si, 1H MAS NMR, 1H‐29Si CP MAS NMR. The nature and strength of acid‐base sites are determined by FTIR spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine, potentiometric titration, and TPD of NH3/CO2/H2O with MS control. The acid‐base properties of the zeolites′ surfaces influence their catalytic properties in the target process. The higher selectivity towards linear butene isomers achieved over FER and MFI can be explained by the high strength and density of Brønsted acid sites (over 90 % of the total surface acidity). MFI might be regarded as a potential material for the creation of novel catalysts for isobutanol conversion into linear butenes at moderate temperatures (448–473 K) since it offers greater operating stability throughout the process. Carbon nanomaterials were introduced into this research as modifiers for polymeric membranes for single-piece electrodes, and their properties were studied for the case of nitrate-selective sensors. The use of graphene, carbon black and carbon nanotubes is shown to significantly improve the potentiometric response, while no redox response was observed. The use of carbon nanomaterials results in a near-Nernstian response (54 mV/pNO3−) towards nitrate ions over a wide linear range (from 10−1 to 10−6 M NO3−). The results obtained by chronopotentiometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveal little resistance, and the capacitance parameter is as high as 0.9 mF (for graphene-based sensor). The high electrical capacity of electrodes results in the good stability of the potentiometric response and a low potential drift (0.065 mV/h). Introducing carbon nanomaterials into the polymetric membrane, instead of using them as separate layers, allows for the simplification of the sensors' preparation procedure. A series of activated carbons (YMBC) obtained from yerba mate twig residue (YMT) were prepared by chemical (H3PO4) and thermal activation. Five materials were synthesized, varying the carbonization temperature (400–600 °C under N2 atmosphere) and H3PO4:YMT ratio (60–80 wt%). They were physicochemically and texturally characterized by SEM-EDX, BET, FT-IR, and 31P MAS-NMR. Potentiometric titration with the n-butylamine technique was used to evaluate their acidic properties. The materials exhibited a high specific surface area (572 m2 g−1 < SBET < 1031 m2 g−1) and mesoporosity (67% < Smeso/SBET < 93%). The results showed that the acid strength and the number of acid sites increased with the H3PO4:YMT ratio and decreased with the calcination temperature increment. The FT-IR and 31P characterization revealed the presence of Hn+2PnO3n+1 species firmly (via P-O-C linkages) and loosely attached (by electrostatic interaction). The latter were successfully removed by refluxing the material in water or n-propanol. The optimal reaction conditions were applied to the synthesis of other levulinic acid esters using YMBC-500-70NP as a catalyst. Furthermore, the effective separation of the product combined with the use of a recyclable catalyst resulted in a clean and environmentally friendly strategy for the synthesis of alkyl levulinates, bioproducts of relevance to the biorefinery industry, which can be applied as fragrances, flavoring agents, as well as fuel additives. PdRuO2/PVP nanomaterial was synthesized using a straightforward method and characterized using advanced analytical methods such as TEM, XRD, XPS, elemental mapping and SEM. The synthesized PdRuO2/PVP nanomaterial was used as an ionophore in potentiometric sensor electrodes and successfully adapted to Cr3+ ion detection in a large number of aqueous samples. Several experimental parameters of the PdRuO2/PVP sensor such as potentiometric behavior, selectivity, repeatability, response time, pH, titration, and recovery in real samples were investigated. Potentiometric behavioral characteristics were performed in the concentration range 1 × 10−6–1.0 × 10−1 M. The repeated experiments performed six times showed that there was no deviation in the measurements. The limit of detection of the PdRuO2/PVP potentiometric sensor was very low with a value of 8.6 × 10−8 M. The potentiometric measurements showed that the synthesized PdRuO2/PVP ionophore was highly effective in detecting Cr3+ in a wide pH range of 2.0–8.0 and was found to have a shelf life of over 1 year. High fluoride exposures can lead to adverse effects such as dental and bone fluorosis, as well as endocrine and cognitive developmental problems. Water is the main dietary source of this ion, although significant concentrations have also been detected in other beverages widely consumed by the population such as soft drinks. A total of 200 soft drink samples (60 flavoured, 70 extracts, 60 fruit juice and 10 soft drinks) were analysed by fluoride ion selective potentiometry. A consumption of 330 mL was estimated for exposure assessment and subsequent F-risk assessment by soft drink consumption. The highest average concentration was found in extract soft drinks (2.45 ± 1.15 mg/L), followed by flavoured (1.71 ± 2.29 mg/L) and carbonated soft drinks (1.38 ± 0.40 mg/L), while the lowest was found in fruit juice soft drinks (1.09 ± 0.62 mg/L). The flavours with the highest concentration were tea-melon and tea-passion fruit with 3.66 ± 0.40 and 3.17 ± 0.56 mg/L respectively and the lowest was lemon flavour with 0.69 mg/L. The contribution of these beverages, considering the UL (Upper level) reference values set by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) are between 3.28–41.78%, depending on age group and sex. In the present study, based on continuous acid–base potentiometric titration experiments of argillaceous limestone-derived yellow soil obtained at different depths in Pingba, Guizhou, a 1-site/2-pKa generalized composite surface complexation model (SCM) was established to obtain relevant parameters and explore soil surface acid–base properties. The model was employed to simulate cadmium (Cd) adsorption behavior. Combining the physicochemical properties of yellow soil and acid–base titration curves, the SCM-derived concentrations (Hs) and densities (Ds) of the surface-active sites for three soil layers showed decreasing trends with an increase in depth, whereas the calculated soil charge zero point (pHpzc) values matched the experimental values, indicating the applicability of SCM in studying the surface acid–base properties of yellow soil. Furthermore, as the pH increased, Cd shifted gradually from the dissolved to the adsorbed state, achieving complete adsorption at a pH of ~ 7. The model-simulated Cd adsorption curve matched well with the experimental curve; the Cd adsorption behavior corresponded with the simulated distribution of surface sites at different pH levels, with ≡SOH2+ and ≡SO− being the main forms at pH < pHpzc and pH > pHpzc, respectively. Correlation analysis indicated that organic matter and goethite played a major role in Hs, whereas the charge zero points of soils at different depths were determined mainly by clay minerals, such as illite and iron-aluminum oxides. Our study established a scientific and reasonable relationship between the soil physicochemical properties and model parameters, providing a basis for preventing heavy metal pollution behavior via the effective application of model predictions. The reactions of oxygen and samarium ions in molten NaCl–2CsCl eutectic in the temperature range of 823–913 K have been investigated by potentiometric titration in an inert gas atmosphere. The activity of oxygen ions in the studied melts was monitored using a standard YZME (indicator) electrode based on Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 with a solid–electrolyte membrane. The titration of Sm3+ by O2− ions demonstrated the formation of insoluble SmOCl compounds in the investigated region. The mechanism of formation of SmOCl and Sm2O3 was established by the analysis of potentiometric titration curves. Subsequently, the solubility of SmOCl and Sm2O3 in the melt was calculated using the material balance equation and solubility constant equation. Finally, the basic thermodynamic properties of SmOCl and Sm2O3 in molten NaCl–2CsCl eutectic were calculated, and the properties of samarium in the melt were summarized using the Pourbaix-type (E-pO2−) diagram to determine the kinds of stabilized samarium compounds. The degradation of engine oil (EO) directly affects the functional properties and service life of the engine. Thus, there is an immense need for EOs that are suitable for robust and stringent operating conditions. The goal of this study was to develop a nano-induced EO that is sustainable, energy-efficient, and was tested in a diesel-engine forklift. The performance properties such as chemical degradation, wear metal content, and total acidity/base numbers were analyzed using an FTIR spectrometer, an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, and potentiometric titration techniques, respectively. Lately, children's daily consumption of some products, such as cereals and candies, has been rising, which provides a compelling rationale for determining any metallic substances that may be present. Monitoring the concentration of certain metals, like nickel, in these products is necessary due to medical issues in humans when consumed regularly. So, in this work, a novel and highly selective carbon paste as a Ni(II) ion-selective sensor was prepared and investigated using ceramic magnesium aluminum spinel nanoparticles as the ionophore and tritolyl phosphate (TOCP) as a plasticizer. A modified co-precipitation method was used to synthesize the spinel nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope with EDAX, transmission electron microscope, and BET surface area were used to determine the phase composition, microstructure, pores size, particle size, and surface area of the synthesized nanoparticles. The spinel nanoparticle was found to have a nano crystallite size with a cubic crystal system, a particle size ranging from 17.2 to 51.52 nm, mesoporous nature (average pore size = 8.72 nm), and a large surface area (61.75 m2/g). The composition ratio of graphite carbon as a base: TOCP as binder: spinal as ionophore was 67.3:30.0:2.7 (wt%) based on potentiometric detections over concentrations from 5.0 × 10−8 to 1.0 × 10−2 mol L−1 with LOD of 5.0 × 10−8 mol L−1. A measurement of 29.22 ± 0.12 mV decade−1 over pH 2.0–7.0 was made for the Nernstian slope. This sensor demonstrated good repeatability over nine weeks and a rapid response of 8 s. A good selectivity was shown for Ni(II) ions across many interferents, tri-, di-, and monovalent cations. The Ni(II) content in spiked real samples, including cocaine, sweets, coca, chocolate, carbonated drinks, cereals, and packages, were measured. The results obtained indicated no significant difference between the proposed potentiometric method and the officially reported ICP method according to the F- and t-test data. Under ideal conditions, nanotubes with a fixed negative tube-wall charge will reject anions and transport-only cations. Because many proposed nanofluidic devices are optimized in this ideally cation-permselective state, it is important to know the experimental conditions that produce ideal responses. A parameter called Ccrit, the highest salt concentration in a contacting solution that still produces ideal cation permselectivity, is of particular importance. Pioneering potentiometric studies on gold nanotubes were interpreted using an electrostatic model that states that Ccrit should occur when the Debye length in the contacting salt solution becomes equivalent to the tube radius. Since this "double-layer overlap model" (DLOM), treats all same-charge ions as identical point charges, it predicts that all same-charged cations should produce the same Ccrit. However, the effect of cation on Ccrit in gold nanotubes was never investigated. This knowledge gap has become important because recent studies with a polymeric cation-permselective nanopore membrane showed that DLOM failed for every cation studied. To resolve this issue, we conducted potentiometric studies on the effect of salt cation on Ccrit for a 10 nm diameter gold nanotube membrane. Ccrit for all cations studied were, within experimental error, the same and identical, with values predicted by DLOM. The reason DLOM prevailed for the gold nanotubes but failed for the polymeric nanopores stems from the chemical difference between the fixed negative charges of these two membranes. Solid-contact ion-selective electrodes (SC-ISEs) have the advantages of easy miniaturization, even chip integration, easy carrying, strong stability, and more favorable detection in complex environments. They have been widely used in conjunction with portable, wearable, and intelligent detection devices, as well as in on-site analysis and timely monitoring in the fields of environment, industry, and medicine. This article provides a comprehensive review of the composition of sensors based on redox capacitive and double-layer capacitive SC-ISEs, as well as the ion–electron transduction mechanisms in the solid-contact (SC) layer, particularly focusing on strategies proposed in the past three years (since 2021) for optimizing the performance of SC-ISEs. These strategies include the construction of ion-selective membranes, SC layer, and conductive substrates. A newly prepared solid contact ion selective electrode based on polyvinyl chloride membrane has been optimized and developed for determining nitrazepam in its pure form and synthetically prepared tablet dosage form. The proposed electrode was fabricated based on zeolite modified carbon paste electrode as a solid contact acting as a support for the membrane of PVC containing the ion complex of nitrazepam‐tetraphenyl borate as an electroactive material, and the plasticizer dibutyl phthalate. By improving the composition, the potentiometric properties were further enhanced, and the sensor achieved a Nernstian slope of 60.89 mV dec−1. The sensor was effective for detecting nitrazepam in the concentration range of 1.0×10−7 to 1.0×10−2 M, with a detection limit of 4.7×10−8 M. The sensor demonstrated excellent reversibility and reproducibility with a fast response time and application over a wide pH range. The developed electrode showed no significant effect when tested with various interfering species. It is successfully applied for accurate determination of nitrazepam in pure form, synthetically prepared tablet and spiked human plasma. The developed technique was validated and demonstrated high accuracy and precision. When compared statistically with the official method, there were no significant differences observed. This work presents studies to study the nucleation and growth mechanism of electrochemical NiMo films suitable for the decomposition reaction of water as an electrocatalyst, in which the value of the potential established from polarization measurements was maintained constant. Optimal conditions for the electrochemical synthesis of the Ni-Mo alloy on the surface of platinum and nickel electrodes were established using voltammetric studies examining the influence of many electrolysis parameters on the process of co-deposition of nickel with molybdenum. The chronoamperometric method provides more detailed information about the electrodeposition process by studying the nucleation and growth mechanism of electrochemical films in which the potential value determined from polarization measurements was kept constant. The curves were taken at various potential values -0.1, -0.2, -0.3, -0.4, -0.5, -0.6, -0.7, -0.8 and -0.9 V at room temperature. The study of these curves can be carried out by comparing the experimental calculated data with the equations of the Scharifker-Hills model. It was found that in the early stage, at potentials of -0.1 and -0.2 V, the experimental data fit into the curve of the progressive nucleation model, according to which Ni-Mo nucleation occurs on many active areas of the substrate surface, but at other potentials (from -0.3 to -0.9 V) deposition deviates towards instantaneous nucleation and growth. Self‐powered pressure detection using smart wearable devices is the subject of intense research attention, which is intended to address the critical need for prolonged and uninterrupted operations. Current piezoelectric and triboelectric sensors well respond to dynamic stimuli while overlooking static stimuli. This study proposes a dual‐response potentiometric pressure sensor that responds to both dynamic and static stimuli. The proposed sensor utilizes interdigital electrodes with MnO2/carbon/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the cathode and conductive silver paste as the anode. The electrolyte layer incorporates a mixed hydrogel of PVA and phosphoric acid. The optimized interdigital electrodes and sandpaper‐like microstructured surface of the hydrogel electrolyte contribute to enhanced performance by facilitating an increased contact area between the electrolyte and electrodes. The sensor features an open‐circuit voltage of 0.927 V, a short‐circuit current of 6 µA, a higher sensitivity of 14 mV/kPa, and outstanding cycling performance (>5000 cycles). It can accurately recognize letter writing and enable capacitor charging and LED lighting. Additionally, a data acquisition and display system employing the proposed sensor, which facilitates the monitoring of athletes' rehabilitation training, and machine learning algorithms that effectively guide rehabilitation actions are presented. The work is devoted to the study of the influence of nitrogenous bases on the composition of oil and the structure of asphaltenes on their colloidal stability in solution. Model petroleum systems with a basic nitrogen content of 1, 2, and 3% wt. were used as objects of study. Asphaltene-like nitrogenous bases were obtained by thermolysis of model petroleum systems with different nitrogen contents. The results were obtained using elemental analysis, non-aqueous potentiometric titration, spectrophotometry, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and liquid adsorption chromatography. It was established that the content of Nbas in asphaltenes increases by 0.3–1.3% wt. with the increase in quinoline content in petroleum components. Quinoline is incorporated into the supramolecular structure of asphaltenes and increases their average molecular weight by 650 amu. and aromaticity by 2%. The aggregative stability of asphaltenes decreases by 1.5–6 times with an increase in their average molecular weight and an increase in Nbas in their composition as a component of a dispersion medium. The colloidal stability of synthetic asphaltene-like substances, on the contrary, is due to the appearance of their molecular sequence of fragments containing Nbas in aromatic rings. Electrocatalytic activities for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of Au electrodes modified by as prepared and size selected (0.45–1.0, 0.22–0.45, and 0.1–0.22 µm) h-BN nanosheet (BNNS), which is an insulator, were examined in O2 saturated 0.5M H2SO4 solution. The overpotential was reduced by all the BNNS modifications, and the smaller the size, the smaller the overpotential for ORR, i.e., the larger the ORR activity, in this size range. The overpotential was reduced by as much as ∼330 mV compared to a bare Au electrode by modifying the Au surface by the BNNS of the smallest size range (0.1–0.22 µm). The overpotential at this electrode was only 80 mV more than that at the Pt electrode. Both the rotation disk electrode experiments with Koutecky–Levich analysis and rotating ring disk electrode measurements showed that more than 80% of oxygen is reduced to water via the four-electron process at this electrode. These results strongly suggest and theoretical density functional theory calculations support that the ORR active sites are located at the edges of BNNS islands adsorbed on Au(111). The decrease in size of BNNS islands results in an effective increase in the number of the catalytically active sites and, hence, in the increase in the catalytic activity of the BNNS/Au(111) system for ORR. Multiple-step nucleation pathways have been observed during mineral formation in both inorganic and biomineral systems. These pathways can involve precursor aqueous species, amorphous intermediates, or metastable phases. Despite the widespread occurrence of these processes, elucidating the precise nucleation steps and the transformation mechanisms between each step remains a challenging task. Using a suite of potentiometric, microscopic, and spectroscopic tools, we studied the nucleation pathway of SrSO4 as a function of the physico-chemical solution parameters. Our observations reveal that below a threshold supersaturation, nucleation is driven by bound species, akin to the prenucleation cluster model, which directly leads to the formation of the stable phase celestine, SrSO4. At higher supersaturations, this situation is altered, with nucleation dominated by the consumption of free ions. Importantly, this change in nucleation mechanism is coupled to the formation of a hemihydrate metastable phase, SrSO4 · 1/2H2O, which eventually transforms into celestine, adhering to Ostwald's rule of stages. This transformation is a solution-mediated process, also occurring in the presence of a fluid film and is controlled by the physico-chemical parameters of the surrounding environment. It proceeds through the dissolution of the metastable phase and the de novo crystallization of the final phase. Overall, our results reveal that ion association taking place during the prenucleation stage dictates whether the nucleation pathway goes through an intermediate phase or not. Herein, we present a dark-green crystalline tetranuclear Cu(II) Schiff base complex {C1 = [Cu4L4](ClO4)4(DMF)4(H2O)} using a N,N,O donor ligand (HL), namely 2-(((2-hydroxypropyl)imino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol. Spectro-photometrical investigation on the β-lactamase-like activity of this coordinately saturated system revealed its catalytic inefficiency towards hydrolysis of nitrocefin as a model substrate. This complex has attracted significant interest as a promising photo-catalyst owing to its narrow band gap (2.40 eV) as predicted from DFT calculations and its higher responsivity towards UV light. Therefore, C1 is effectively involved in the photocatalytic reduction of perchlorate to Cl− in the presence of a hole scavenger (H2O–MeOH) under prolonged UV irradiation and itself becomes photo-cleaved to yield a new dark-brown colored chlorobridged dinuclear crystalline complex C2 {[CuL(H2O)2Cl3]H2O}. Furthermore, C2 was deployed as a functional β-lactamase model and was found to show a remarkable catalytic proficiency towards the hydrolysis of nitrocefin in 70 : 30 (V/V) MeOH–H2O medium. This pro-catalyst C2 has been speculated to generate an aqua bridged active catalyst that plays a crucial factor in hydrolysis. This phenomenon was again experimentally established by potentiometric pH titration where C2 displays only one pKa value (7.11) in the basic pH range, indicating the deprotonation of the bridged water molecule. Based on several other kinetic studies, it may be postulated that the hydrolysis of nitrocefin is initiated by the nucleophilic attack of a bridging hydroxide, followed by very fast protonation of the intermediate to furnish the hydrolyzed product. It is noteworthy that the rate of nitrocefin hydrolysis is greatly inhibited in the presence of external chloride concentration. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the photochemical behavior of such a tetranuclear copper(II) Schiff base complex. Fluorine, depending on its concentration and chemical form, is essential or toxic to humans and animals. Therefore, it is crucial to be able to determine it reliably. In this study, fluorine was determined in animal feed after extraction with HCl (gastric juice simulation). The standard potentiometric method with a fluoride-selective electrode (ISE) and newly developed high-resolution continuum source graphite furnace molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS GFMAS) method was applied. Feed samples turned out to be a challenge for HR-CS GFMAS. Chemical interferences (formation of competing molecules, CaF, GaCl, and GaP, instead of the target GaF molecule) and spectral effects (including a phosphorous molecule spectrum and atomic lines) were identified. An additional difficulty was caused by reagent contamination with F and memory effects. Difficulties were eliminated/reduced. The quality of ISE analysis was multi-directionally verified (including comprehensive proficiency testing). A risk of inaccuracy at low F concentration, where the calibration relationship is nonlinear, was investigated. The results of both methods were consistent, which confirms the accuracy of the methods and informs that the extracted fluorine is in fluoride form. The results of extensive ISE tests conducted in Poland in 2021–2023 have shown that, in most cases, the fluoride content is significantly lower than the threshold values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, the study of the new ligand 3,3′-bis[N,N-bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)aminomethyl]-2,2′-dihydroxybiphenyl (L) is reported, where a central 2,2′-biphenol (BPH) fluorophore was functionalized at 3,3′-positions with two dipicolylamine (DPA) side arms as receptor units. Following the synthesis and full chemical–physical characterization, the acid–base and Zn2+-coordination abilities of L were investigated through a combination of potentiometric, UV-Vis, fluorescence, NMR, XRD and DFT measurements. The optical properties of the ligand turned out to be strongly dependent on the pH, being straightforwardly associated with the protonation state of the BPH moiety, whereas its peculiar design allowed to form stable mono and dinuclear Zn2+ complexes. In the latter species, the presence of two Zn2+ ions coordinatively unsaturated and placed at close distance to each other, prompted us to test their usefulness as metallo-receptors for two environmental pollutants of great relevance, ibuprofen and ketoprofen. Potentiometric and fluorescence investigations evidenced that these important non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are effectively coordinated by the metallo-receptors and, of relevance, both the stability and the fluorescence properties of the resulting ternary adducts are markedly affected by the different chemical architectures of the two substrates. This study aims at highlighting the promising perspectives arising from the use of polyamino phenolic ligands as chemosensors for H+/Zn2+ and other additional anionic targets in their metal-complexed forms. Potentiometric titration in a fast and simultaneously high-resolution modality was proposed for the identification and quantification of protolytic groups of variable strength at the surface of primary soil particles. The method is implemented by titrimetric data processing as multicomponent spectra (pKa spectrotitrimetry). Due to the high resolution, the error of acidity-constant assessment (3–5%) is lower, compared to existing approaches; due to the fast titration, the effect of soil hydrolysis is minimized. The soil profiles for acidic Retisols (podzolic soils)—under a spruce crown and in the intercrown space—were studied. These soils, which have similar bulk properties and genesis but developed under different plant covers, were distinguished by pKa spectral features at 4–5; 5.5–6.5; 6.5–8.5; 7.5–8.5; and 9–10, as well as total group concentrations. Differences in acidic and basic-group distribution (carboxyl groups, amorphous aluminosilicates, carbonate species, amino groups, soluble (poly)phenolic compounds, phospholipids) and Al and Fe complex compounds within the same soil profiles and between two Retisols were found and quantified. The acidity constants and group concentrations found by pKa spectrotitrimetry were compared with conventional soil-composition indicators (total organic carbon, oxalate-soluble Fe and Al, and phosphorus), using principal component analysis. The main correlations are between the concentrations of oxalate-soluble Al and groups with pKa values of 5.0–6.5 and 8.5; oxalate-soluble Fe and pKa values of 9.0–10.0; and P2O5 and pKa values of 4.0–6.0 and 6.5–8.5. Flow injection amperometry provides an opportunity to avoid common drawbacks of classical potentiometry for solid-contact ion-selective electrodes. The current is generated by solid-contact in course of the polymer chain recharging in response to an excess of cations or anions in the polymer film. Cations cause cathodic peaks on the chronoamperogram, while anions result in anodic peaks. For polyaniline with negatively charged substituents, a response to cations is observed, whereas the presence of uncharged ones results in anion detection. Moreover, in the case of the protonated –SO3H group, this compensating current is an order of magnitude lower than that for the deprotonated one. For electroactive self-doped polyanilines, the maximal amperometric signal is achieved at the working potential within the electroactivity range. In order to study the effect of substituents on the terpyridine molecular system, a series of substituted 2,2:6′,2″-terpyridines have been synthesized and fully characterized. The substitutions range from EWGs like –F to EDGs like –OMe, -NMe2, triphenylamine (TPA), heterocycles like furan and fused rings like anthracene. The –F, -OMe, and -NMe2 are connected to the terpyridine core via phenyl ring as spacer group whereas the TPA is attached via thienyl moiety. The furan and anthracene are directly appended to the terpyridine core. The synthesized terpyridines were structurally characterized with NMR and mass spectrometry. The terpyridines were then subjected to UV–Vis absorption, luminescence, and potentiometric analysis. An extension of the light harvesting window was observed for terpyridines with electron-donating groups (EDGs) as substituent. Density functional theory (DFT) based methods (B3LYP model with 6–311 G basis sets) were applied to optimize the molecular structures. The experimental absorption studies were simulated with TD-DFT based theoretical calculations (B3LYP with 6–311 G (d,p) basis set in DCM solvent using IEFPCM model) to ascertain the underlying electronic transitions. A mechanistic modelling of the adsorption processes onto individual minerals presenting in the near- and far-fields can greatly enhance the credibility of long-term safety assessments of granite-based geological repositories. In this study, the titration and U(VI) adsorption characteristics of chlorite, one of the major minerals of rock fractures, have been studied. Potentiometric titration curves at two ionic strengths (0.1 and 0.4 mol/L NaCl) are successfully interpreted by considering protonation/deprotonation reactions on generic edge sites (≡SOH) in the framework of a non-electrostatic surface complexation model (SCM). The adsorption of U(VI) on chlorite was reached after 24 h, the adsorption kinetics can be described by a pseudo-second-order model. A non-electrostatic SCM with three surface complexes (≡SOUO2+, ≡SO(UO2)3(OH)5 and ≡SO(UO2)3(OH)72−) was set up based on pH edges of U(VI) at adsorption equilibrium in the absence of CO2. Additional, experimental data measured as a function of U(VI) concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio and carbonate concentration were well reproduced by the proposed model. Finally, parallel experiments were conducted using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to analyze the variation of U(VI) surface species speciation at different pH values. The good agreement between SCM prediction and XPS analysis demonstrates the reliability of the model in predicting and quantifying the radionuclides retention by chlorite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Graphene oxide (GO) was used as an ion-to-electron transducer for all-solid-state nitrate electrodes based on an alkyl ammonium salt as the sensing element. Commercially available carbon screen-printed electrodes modified with GO were used as conductive substrates, whose morphology and distribution along the surface were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The potentiometric performance of the GO-based electrodes revealed a Nernstian slope of −53.5 ± 2.0 mV decade−1 (R2 = 0.9976 ± 0.0015) in the range from 3.0 × 10−6 to 10−2 M and a lower limit of detection of 1.9 × 10−6 M. An impressive reproducibility between equally prepared electrodes (n = 15) was demonstrated by a variation of <6% for the calibration parameters. Constant current chronopotentiometry and water layer tests were used to evaluate the potential signal stability, providing similar performance to previously published works with graphene-based ion-selective electrodes. Notably, the GO-based sensors showed the absence of a water layer, a long-term drift of 0.3 mV h−1, and a stable performance (LOD and sensitivity) over 3 months. The applicability of the proposed sensors was demonstrated in determining nitrate levels in water samples with great accuracy, yielding recovery values from 87.8 to 107.9%, and comparable (p > 0.05) results to a commercial nitrate probe. This research demonstrated and analyzed the complexation capabilities of the dipodal chelator N¹,N³-bis(2-((E)-2,3,4-trihydroxybenzylidene)amino)ethyl)malonamide (MEP) with heavy metal ions, viz., Al3+, Fe3+, and Cr3+, by engaging potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods. The whole experiment was carried out in a pH-dependent manner in a highly aqueous medium with a pH range of 2 to 11. The potentiometric and spectrophotometric results suggest the highest binding affinity of the chelator MEP with Al3+ metal ions among all three metal ions under study, with a stability constant value of log β = 27.13. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) plays a central role in a variety of emotional and physiological functions in humans, such as forming a part of the body′s response to stress and anxiety. This work compares the impact of MCH and PEG spacer molecules on the performance of a potentiometric NPY sensor. An NPY‐specific DNA aptamer with thiol termination was immobilized onto a gold electrode surface. The performance of the sensor is compared when either an MCH‐ or PEG‐based self‐assembled monolayer is formed following aptamer immobilization. Backfilling the surface with alkanethiol spacer molecules like these is key for proper conformational folding of aptamer‐target binding. Non‐specific adhesion of NPY to the MCH‐based sensor surface was observed via surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and then confirmed via potentiometry. It is then shown that PEG improves the sensor′s sensitivity to NPY compared to the surfaces with an MCH‐based SAM. We achieve the detection of picomolar range NPY levels in buffer with a sensitivity of 36.1 mV/decade for the aptamer and PEG‐based sensor surface, thus demonstrating the promise of potentiometric sensing of NPY for future wearable deployment. The sensor′s selectivity was also studied via exposure to cortisol, a different stress marker, resulting in a 13x smaller differential voltage (aptamer‐specific) response compared to that of NPY. Phosphate is an important fertilizer in agriculture and electrochemical sensors based on cobalt (Co) are promising for measurement of phosphate. The deposition of Co onto conductive substrates to form a nano/microstructured Co layer with rich active sites is a typical strategy to improve detection performances. However, the widely used substrates show smooth surfaces, which cannot provide extra active sites. Herein, a high‐performance phosphate sensor is fabricated by generating Co nanoparticles (NPs) on a hierarchically porous laser‐induced graphene (LIG) matrix with a large surface area. Specifically, a Co layer is first electroplated on the LIG matrix. Nevertheless, the pores of LIG will be blocked by the dense Co layer so the performances of the fabricated LIG‐Co sensor exhibit limited enhancements. Therefore, a "nearly all etching (NAE)" technique is developed to transform the dense Co layer to dispersive Co NPs and re‐expose the pores of LIG, both increasing the active sites. Compared to the LIG‐Co sensor, the LIG‐Co NP sensor displays overall superiority. The response time, sensitivity, and linearity are enhanced from ≈60 to ≈10 s, from 0.012 to 0.069 V dec−1, and from 0.973 to 0.998, respectively. Polymeric membrane ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) have been widely used in environmental monitoring. However, in complicated marine environments, marine biofouling usually becomes a sticky problem for these electrodes. Herein, for the first time, a novel maintenance-free antifouling potentiometric marine sensor based on a self-polishing coating (SPC) is proposed. The SPC is synthesized by using the seeded emulsion polymerization method based on the triisopropylsilyl methacrylate monomer as the regulator of the self-renewal rate. This coating can be simply modified onto the electrode surface by drop-casting. The silyl acrylate side groups of the obtained SPC on the sensor surface can be hydrolyzed in the marine alkaline medium. The shear movement of seawater driven by sea waves, wind, gravity, or vibration removes the leftover (fouled) brittle polymer backbone and thus the fouling marine microorganisms. As a proof-of-concept experiment, a polymeric membrane Ca2+-ISE is chosen as a model. Compared to the unmodified electrode, the SPC-coated Ca2+-ISE exhibits remarkable improved antifouling properties in terms of superior anti-adhesive abilities towards marine microorganisms, such as bacterial cells and algae and excellent long-term stability even in the presence of high levels of marine microorganisms. Since no additional manual maintenance is required for maintaining the antifouling abilities of the sensor, the proposed self-polishing sensor may lay an important foundation for construction of unattended long-term potentiometric monitoring systems in real marine environments. Copper(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) complexes of various peptide fragments of tau protein were studied by potentiometric and spectroscopic techniques. All peptides contained one histidyl residue and represented the sequences of tau(91–97) (Ac-AQPHTEI-NH2), tau(385–390) (Ac-KTDHGA-NH2) and tau(404–409) (Ac-SPRHLS-NH2). Imidazole-N donors of histidine were the primary metal binding sites for all peptides and all metal ions, but in the case of copper(II) and nickel(II), the deprotonated amide groups were also involved in metal binding by increasing pH. The most stable complexes were formed with copper(II) ions, but the presence of prolyl residues resulted in significant changes in the thermodynamic stability and speciation of the systems. It was also demonstrated that nickel(II) and especially zinc(II) complexes have relatively low thermodynamic stability with these peptides. The copper(II)-catalyzed oxidation of the peptides was also studied. In the presence of H2O2, the fragmentation of peptides was detected in all cases. In the simultaneous presence of H2O2 and ascorbic acid, the fragmentation of the peptide is less preferred, and the formation of 2-oxo-histidine also occurs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sulfate is a critical component of schwertmannite. However, the sulfate content of schwertmannite decreases with the increase in AMD-polluted river pH value, and its impact on the surface properties and Cr(VI) adsorption of schwertmannite remains unclear. To address this issue, different methods, including batch adsorption, N 2 physisorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), potentiometric titration, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) in combination with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analysis, and surface complexation modeling (SCM) were employed. Our results showed that sulfate existed as both non-protonated bidentate-binuclear complexes and non-protonated outer-sphere complexes in schwertmannite. The surface morphology and particle size of schwertmannite were unaffected by the sulfate content. However, a decrease in sulfate content resulted in a drop in the negative charge on the surface of schwertmannite, which is conducive to particle aggregation. An increase in pH, on the other hand, raised the negative charge and encouraged the dispersion of the particles. And then, reducing the sulfate content of schwertmannite led to a decrease in acid-base buffer and Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of schwertmannite. The adsorption process of Cr(VI) by schwertmannite can be divided into two stages. In the first stage, Cr(VI) was adsorbed primarily through anion exchange reactions with the sulfate; however, the contribution of surface complexation gradually increased as the initial sulfate content decreased because of a reduced likelihood of anion exchange and an increase in the specific surface area of schwertmannite. Additionally, the behavior of sulfate and Cr(VI) in this stage could be predicted based on the initial sulfate content of schwertmannite. In the second stage, surface complexation with hydroxyl sites became the predominant mechanism of adsorption, which still exhibited great potential at higher Cr(VI) concentrations. Finally, the aforementioned hypothesis was used to establish a CD-MUSIC model, and the fitting results demonstrated that the density and Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of the sulfate site dropped as the sulfate content decreased, while the hydroxyl site was less impacted. Recently, fluorescent sensors have gained considerable attention due to their high sensitivity, low cost and noninvasiveness. Among the different materials that can be used for this purpose, carbon dots (CDs) represent valuable candidates for applications in sensing. These, indeed, are easily synthesized, show high quantum yield and are highly biocompatible. However, it was pointed out that the photoluminescence properties of these nanomaterials are strictly dependent on the synthetic and purification methods adopted. The presence of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), a natural, low cost and biocompatible clay mineral, has been found to be efficient in obtaining small and highly monodispersed CDs without long and tedious purification techniques. Herein, we report the comparison of synthetic pathways for obtaining halloysite-N-doped CDs (HNTs-NCDs) that could be used in biological sensing. One was based on the synthesis of N-doped CDs by a bottom-up approach on HNTs' surface by a MW pyrolysis process; the other one was based on the post-modification of pristine N-doped CDs with halloysite derivatives. The evaluation of the best synthetic route was performed by different physico-chemical techniques. It was found that the bottom-up approach led to the formation of N-doped CDs with different functional groups onto the HNTs' surface. This evidence was also translated in the different fluorescence quantum yields and the existence of several functional groups in the obtained materials was investigated by potentiometric titrations. Furthermore, the ability of the synthesized nanomaterials as sensors for Fe3+ ions detection was assessed by spectroscopic measurements, and the cellular uptake was verified by confocal/fluorescence microscopies as well. The total detection rate of this method for sulfur-containing components in Li-S batteries exceeds 99 %. • Clarify that the presence of lithium polysulfide in the electrolyte after discharge is the main factor for restricting the full utilization of Li-S batteries' capacity, and propose targeted improvement measures. • This study offers a considerably refined and comprehensive methodology for the capacity fading and failure mechanisms assessment of high-energy-density Li-S batteries. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are a strong contender for the new-generation battery system to meet the growing energy demand due to their significantly high energy density (2600 Wh/kg) and cost-effectiveness. However, the practical operating conditions yield an initial capacity of less than 80 % of the theoretical capacity, resulting in a limited lifespan and hindering broader application. What's worse, current mechanism, especially the evolution process of sulfides for the initial capacity degradation is not clear due to the practical difficulties of effective separation and detection of sulfur-containing components. Herein, we have developed an instrumental analysis method enabling graded leaching and quantitative determination of sulfur-containing components. This technology achieves a detection precision surpassing 99.11 %, addressing the inherent deficiency in calculating sulfur-containing components using the decrement method. Applying this method reveals that the presence of lithium polysulfides in the electrolyte (26.34 wt%) after discharging is the primary factor causing insufficient capacity utilization in Li-S batteries. This work not only demonstrates the unique behavior of Li-S batteries at high sulfur loading but also provides a systematic evaluation method to guide further research on high-energy-density batteries, and provides theoretical and technical support to promote the development of high-energy, long-life Li-S batteries. Intense pulsed light was investigated for partial photoreduction of AgCl in a poly(vinyl butyral) matrix to obtain a Ag/AgCl reference membrane. The membrane was deposited on both glassy carbon and inkjet‐printed silver electrodes giving all‐solid‐state reference electrodes. Regardless of the electrode material, a sufficient potential stability was obtained in a broad concentration range of various salt solutions. Long‐term potential stability was significantly improved with inkjet‐printed silver electrical contacts. This work demonstrates the use of jute stick extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). In UV‐Vis spectroscopy, peak at 550 nm was used to confirm the formation of AuNPs. The spherical surface morphology of AuNPs was determined through SEM and TEM analysis. While XRD investigation revealed the crystallinity of the prepared AuNPs. To ensure the biocompatibility of synthesized AuNPs, a bacterial investigation was conducted with negative results towards bacterial strain. The, modified FTO with AuNPs were able to detect glucose in CV analysis and the constructed sensor displayed a wide linear range of 50 μM to 40 mM with a detection limit of 20 μM. Scan rate analysis was performed to determine the charge transfer coefficient (0.42) and Tafel slope (102 mV/decade). Furthermore, the interfacial surface mechanism is illustrated to understand the interaction of glucose with the electrode surface in an alkaline medium and the product formation through the dehydrogenation and hydrolysis process. The prepared sensor also showed good stability, reproducibility, and anti‐interference capabilities. In the case of real sample analysis, we used a blood serum sample. The current study presents a comprehensive investigation into the synthesis and characterization of a composite material, Fe/N-CX, designed for the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions. The synthesis process involves co-precipitating iron salts into a carbon dispersion, resulting in the creation of a carbon xerogel infused with magnetic iron particles. Melamine serves as the nitrogen source for the carbon xerogel, integrated into the polymer matrix via the sol–gel method. This amalgamation of carbon xerogel and magnetic iron particles renders the Fe/N-CX composite a highly promising adsorbent for dye removal. Various characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), potentiometric titration, and N2 sorption isotherms, extensively probe the structural, chemical, and surface properties of the Fe/N-CX composite. These methods offer critical insights into its potential adsorption capabilities. Assessment of Fe/N-CX as a methylene blue dye adsorbent reveals an optimal pH of 11, indicating its highest adsorption capacity under slightly alkaline conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity, determined by the Langmuir model, reaches Qmax = 698 mg g−1. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics data align well with the pseudo-second-order model. The sulfur–iodine (S–I) thermochemical cycle for hydrogen production can be widely applied. The solubility of I 2 in complex and non-ideal HI–H 2 O–I 2 (HI x) ternary systems is critical for the phase separation behaviour and Bunsen reactor design. A new apparatus was established to measure the I 2 solubility using potentiometric titration. Fifty-two experimental data points of the I 2 solubility in the HI–H 2 O system were obtained at temperatures ranging from 293 K to 353 K, and the molar fraction of HI ranged from 7.69% to 15.74%. A new solubility model of I 2 in the HI–H 2 O system was developed using the solid-liquid phase equilibrium theory and a local composition model suitable for electrolyte systems (ELECNRTL). The complex effect of I 2 and I− promoting the dissolution of I 2 in the HI x system was also verified, in which the short-range interaction was dominant over the long-range interaction. The parameters of the model were determined by using the experimental data obtained in this work, where the average relative deviation (ARD) of the model was 2.73%. The model was also simultaneously validated using available experimental data, with which the calculated results were in agreement. The acid ionization constants (pKa) of the N-benzoylthiourea / 2-thiohydantoin-pyrrolidines were determined by the potentiometric titration method. Titrations were performed by adding sodium chloride, which gives ionic strength, and hydrochloric acid, which is required for the protonation of the ionizable groups, to 2x10-4 M solutions of the synthesized compounds prepared in an acetonitrile-water (20:80, v / v) solvent system at 25 ± 0.1 °C and sodium hydroxide was used as a titrant. The HYPERQUAD computer program was utilized to determine acid ionization constants based on the data obtained from the Molspin Titration System. Analyzing the obtained results, it is possible to propose three pKa (pKa1, pKa2, and pKa3) values that correspond to the enol, thiol, and NH species for N-benzoylthiourea derivatives in the range of 3.02-10.91 and carboxyl, enol and enthiol species for thiohydantoin derivatives in the range of 2.13-10.96. The suitability of various nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and phosphorus compounds as complexing agents in a silver electrolyte was examined by using potentiometric titration under practical conditions. The setup consisted of three electrodes to measure the pH and the activity of the silver ions simultaneously. Different ratios of silver to complexing agent from 1:10 to 1:1 at a constant ionic strength of 0.2 mol/L were investigated. The type of the complexes and their corresponding critical stability constants were evaluated by fitting the measured data using a self-developed algorithm. The pH and Nernst potential curve were calculated for the assumed complexes based on the law of mass action to find the best approximation. The correct definition of the occurring species is challenging and can lead to significant changes in the calculation of stability constants. For this reason, the measured silver potential curves were primarily used for the rating of the complexing agents. An evaluation of the measurements shows that the donor atom of the complexing agent and its ligand field strongly affected the stability and type of the complexes. A new construction of a potentiometric sensor was introduced for the first time. It relies on the use of two membranes instead of one, as in the well-known coated-disc electrode. For this purpose, a new electrode body was constructed, including not one, but two glassy carbon discs covered with an ion-selective membrane. This solution allows for the sensor properties to be enhanced without using additional materials (layers or additives) on the membrane. The new construction is particularly useful for in situ measurements in environmental samples. Two ion-selective polymeric membranes were used, namely H+ and K+-selective membranes, to confirm the universality of the idea. The tests conducted included chronopotentiometric tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiometric measurements. The electrical and analytical parameters of the sensors were evaluated and compared for all tested electrodes to evaluate the properties of the planar electrode versus previously known constructions. Research has shown that the application of two membranes instead of one allows for the resistance of an electrode to be lowered and for the electrical capacitance to be elevated. Improving the electrical properties of an electrode resulted in the enhancement of its analytical properties. The pH measurement range of the planar electrode is 2–11, which is much wider in contrast to that of the single-membrane electrode. The linear range of the K+-selective planar electrode is wider than that of the coated-disc electrode and equals 10−6 to 10−1 M. The response time turned out to be a few seconds shorter, and the potential drift was smaller due to the application of an additional membrane in the electrode construction. This research creates a new opportunity to design robust potentiometric sensors, as the presented construction is universal and can be used to obtain electrodes selective to various ions. Two new surfactant sensors were developed by synthesizing Pt-doped acid-activated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Pt@MWCNTs). Two different ionophores using Pt@MWCNTs, a new plasticizer, and (a) cationic surfactant 1,3-dihexadecyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium-DHBI (Pt@MWCNT-DHBI ionophore) and (b) anionic surfactant dodecylbenzenesulfonate-DBS (Pt@MWCNT-DBS ionophore) composites were successfully synthesized and characterized. Both surfactant sensors showed a response to anionic surfactants (dodecylsulfate (SDS) and DBS) and cationic surfactants (cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)). The Pt@MWCNT-DBS sensor showed lower sensitivity than expected with the sub-Nernstian response of ≈23 mV/decade of activity for CPC and CTAB and ≈33 mV/decade of activity for SDS and DBS. The Pt@MWCNT-DHBI surfactant sensor had superior response properties, including a Nernstian response to SDS (59.1 mV/decade) and a near-Nernstian response to DBS (57.5 mV/decade), with linear response regions for both anionic surfactants down to ≈2 × 10−6 M. The Pt@MWCNT-DHBI was also useful in critical micellar concentration (CMC) detection. Common anions showed very low interferences with the sensor. The sensor was successfully employed for the potentiometric titration of a technical grade cationic surfactant with good recoveries. The content of cationic surfactants was measured in six samples of complex commercial detergents. The Pt@MWCNT-DHBI surfactant sensor showed good agreement with the ISE surfactant sensor and classical two-phase titration and could be used as an analytical tool in quality control.
