Policies aiming to restore ecosystems, achieve thriving fisheries and reverse biodiversity loss require knowledge of their former status and long‐term variation. As quantitative fish data is typically only available for recent decades long after changes may have occurred, a greater use of qualitative sources has been encouraged in marine historical ecology. We examined diverse historical information (including maritime history, fisheries reports, naturalists' accounts, recipes, nautical charts and newspapers) across a multi‐century time span (13th–20th century) for a wide range of species to document their long‐term trajectories in an understudied Northeast Atlantic ecosystem (Irish Sea coast of Wales). We find strong evidence of the loss of both a pelagic fishery for herring, which was of fundamental socio‐ecological importance since at least the 13th century, and the loss of significant multi‐species demersal and intertidal fisheries. Local, commercial and/or functional extinction has occurred for taxa spanning a wide range of diversity (crustacean, elasmobranchs, sturgeon, and teleosts), body size and ecological role, suggesting far‐reaching changes to food webs. This raises fundamental questions about the present‐day health and integrity of this coastal ecosystem and the long‐term viability of current fisheries which depend on a few shellfish species. Our century‐scale synthesis of qualitative data for multiple taxa allows the collective breadth of losses to be fully appreciated and may reduce the risk of 'shifting baselines'. Restoration to historical baselines may not be achievable, but our findings provide evidence of long‐term change relevant to policies for recovery, and prevention of further decline of fishes, fisheries and ecosystems. Detecting changes in the distribution and abundance of marine species that are cryptic or occurring in very low abundances is difficult, but essential for assessing their status and informing management. One way of quantifying these changes is through the collation of opportunistic records. We reconstruct the population trajectory and distribution of the common stingray Dasyatis pastinaca around Great Britain, using opportunistic records, mostly obtained by recreational anglers. We tested if D. pastinaca declined in abundance and body size in response to fishing and if their distribution has shifted northwards in response to warming seas. We obtained 518 records covering the period 1838–2020. After correcting for observation effort, D. pastinaca catches reported by anglers showed no long-term trend over 50 years, but decreased from 1970 to 1995 and an increase in abundance since 1995. While records of species occurrence were found around much of Great Britain, nearly all were from south of 54° latitude, and records have contracted southwards since 2000. No trend in maximum size through time was detected. In conclusion, we did not find support for the hypothesized declines in abundance and body size or a northward shift in distribution of D. pastinaca and instead found a southward contraction. Background The hemostatic net, which was initially described as a method to decrease hematoma rates in facelift and necklift procedures, has since increased in practice and applicability. However, despite its demonstrated safety and efficacy, there exists significant skepticism with regard to its necessity; in particular, there is concern that the transcutaneous sutures may restrict dermal perfusion. Objectives The goal of this study was to assess flap perfusion, both before and after application of the hemostatic net, to determine if there was an objective decrease in tissue perfusion in relation to application of the hemostatic net, as measured by laser-assisted angiography (LAA). Methods Eight patients underwent cervicofacial flap reconstruction of cutaneous malignancy defects, after which a hemostatic net was applied. All patients underwent evaluation with LAA both before and after application of the net. The average relative and absolute perfusion of different zones of the flap were calculated. Results The average absolute change in relative perfusion was +6.41%, +0.31%, and +3.28% for zones 1, 2, and 3, respectively, after application of the hemostatic net. There was no statistical difference in relative tissue perfusion after application of the net. There were no instances of delayed healing, infections, ischemia, necrosis, or hematoma. One patient developed a seroma after the net was removed. No patients had scarring or residual track marks from the transcutaneous sutures. Online research methods are increasingly used in conservation science to monitor and collect data on online wildlife trade. Shark‐like rays (Rhinopristiformes) are among the most threatened vertebrates, prized for their high‐value fins while other uses for their derivatives are largely unrecognized in the literature. The bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostomus) is characterized by ridges of enlarged thorns, sometimes sold as amulets. Listed on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Appendix II, the thorn‐market has been ignored and undocumented. Using systematic, retrospective online searches, we recorded 977 bowmouth‐derivatives for sale. In our global and multi‐lingual scope, 97% of products were offered from Thailand, despite prohibited trade. 98% of all products were thorns (USD3‐300) and sold alongside high‐profile CITES‐listed taxa (e.g., tiger claws). Consistent advertisements from 2012 revealed a previously unquantified trade of an often‐neglected marketplace in elasmobranch research. Our findings offer insight into the drivers of the thorn trade, potentially rooted in cultural beliefs. Our accessible research methods can be applied internationally and across species, providing quantitative and qualitative insights on aspects of the wildlife trade of a critically endangered fish. Background: Patients undergoing facial rejuvenation surgery are at unique risk of perioperative complications from the anesthetic utilized during the procedure. The ideal anesthetic agent is one that is safe to use in the outpatient population, has analgesic, sedative, and anesthetic properties, yet does not cause respiratory depression or hemodynamic irregularities.Objectives: A retrospective analysis of a large outpatient facelift cohort was performed to determine if dexmedetomidine, an α 2-adrenergic receptor agonist, meets the criteria of an ideal adjunct for propofol in a total intravenous anesthesia protocol.Methods: The charts of 791 patients who underwent rhytidectomy with total intravenous anesthesia were reviewed and data of patients' operative risk factors, perioperative management including medications administered, perioperative vital signs, and postoperative adverse events were recorded. Statistical univariate analyses were performed on the data.Results: Dexmedetomidine resulted in a significant reduction and maintenance of blood pressure from onset of anesthesia until discharge from the postanesthetic recovery unit. The utilization of opioids and anxiolytics was significantly less than previously reported for other anesthetic types. The postoperative nausea/vomiting rate was 0.8% (6 patients). There were no postoperative admissions for inpatient management. Forty-three (5.3%) patients required a conversion to general endotracheal anesthesia and statistically significant risk factors include increased BMI, American Society of Anesthesiologists Class II or higher, preoperative hypertension, and multiple procedures performed.Conclusions: This study demonstrated the safety and efficacy of dexmedetomidine in a large cohort of outpatients undergoing facelift. A 2019 photograph of a blue skate Dipturus batis caught in Welsh waters is the first species‐specific evidence of the "common skate" complex occurring in its former range in the main body of the Irish Sea over four decades after it was considered to have been extirpated there. This possible precursor to recolonisation of former range adds to growing evidence for the recovery of skate species in the North Atlantic and highlights the valuable role of anglers and social media as a complement to important, yet costly, scientific surveys when monitoring rare fishes. Training and education of real-world tasks in Virtual Reality (VR) has seen growing use in industry. The motion-tracking data that is intrinsic to immersive VR applications is rich and can be used to improve learning beyond standard training interfaces. In this paper, we present machine learning (ML) classifiers that predict outcomes from a VR training application. Our approach makes use of the data from the tracked head-mounted display (HMD) and handheld controllers during VR training to predict whether a user will exhibit high or low knowledge acquisition, knowledge retention, and performance retention. We evaluated six different sets of input features and found varying degrees of accuracy depending on the predicted outcome. By visualizing the tracking data, we determined that users with higher acquisition and retention outcomes made movements with more certainty and with greater velocities than users with lower outcomes. Our results demonstrate that it is feasible to develop VR training applications that dynamically adapt to a user by using commonly available tracking data to predict learning and retention outcomes. This article discusses a method called the "Clinda-Clumper" for removing free silicone after a breast implant rupture. The prevalence of breast implant rupture is discussed, with statistics indicating that rupture is a potential risk for breast implant procedures. The article also explores how to monitor and manage breast implant ruptures, as well as the current options and recommendations for removing free silicone from the breast. The side effects of free silicone from a ruptured breast implant are also addressed. The article concludes by highlighting the efficacy of the clindamycin solution in removing silicone and the need for further studies to determine its mechanism and efficacy compared to other solutions. The extinction risk of sharks, rays and chimaeras is higher than that for most other vertebrates due to low intrinsic population growth rates of many species and the fishing intensity they face. The Arabian Sea and adjacent waters border some of the most important chondrichthyan fishing and trading nations globally, yet there has been no previous attempt to assess the conservation status of species occurring here. Using IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Categories and Criteria and their guidelines for application at the regional level, we present the first assessment of extinction risk for 153 species of sharks, rays and chimaeras. Results indicate that this region, home to 15% of described chondrichthyans including 30 endemic species, has some of the most threatened chondrichthyan populations in the world. Seventy‐eight species (50.9%) were assessed as threatened (Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable), and 27 species (17.6%) as Near Threatened. Twenty‐nine species (19%) were Data Deficient with insufficient information to assess their status. Chondrichthyan populations have significantly declined due to largely uncontrolled and unregulated fisheries combined with habitat degradation. Further, there is limited political will and national and regional capacities to assess, manage, conserve or rebuild stocks. Outside the few deepsea locations that are lightly exploited, the prognosis for the recovery of most species is poor in the near‐absence of management. Concerted national and regional management measures are urgently needed to ensure extinctions are avoided, the sustainability of more productive species is secured, and to avoid the continued thinning of the regional food security portfolio. Background. The umbilicus has historical significance regarding health and beauty principles. The visually pleasing aesthetic of the umbilicus has become a vital standard for the perceived success of an abdominoplasty procedure. While the ideal position and shape of the umbilicus have been studied extensively in literature, less is known about the optimal size. Herein, the authors provide a comprehensive literature review to help determine the ideal umbilical size. Methods. A computerized search in the PubMed database was performed to identify articles that discussed ideal umbilical size. Results. The review was performed in July 2022. A total of 21 articles were initially identified, only 6 of which discussed umbilical size. References from the included articles were also evaluated for relevance and resulted in 10 additional articles in the final review. Most of the articles indicated that a smaller umbilicus was found to be aesthetically pleasing, but a numerical range of values were not specified. Conclusions. Although the literature on the ideal umbilical size is sparse, the consensus is toward a smaller, vertically oriented umbilicus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Olfaction, the sense of smell, is an important perceptual function. It has been shown to enhance the quality of life and to facilitate memory recall. However, despite its importance and potential benefits, olfaction is often neglected when creating immersive media experiences (IMEs). The probable reason is that olfactory displays are not readily available. We have developed a reproducible olfactory display that is simple and affordable to make olfactory displays more available. More importantly, we have conducted three exploratory studies on the effects of olfaction. The results of these studies indicate that olfaction is a nuanced sense that can have both positive and negative effects on user experiences. There has been some attempt to include sharks within Ecologically or Biologically Sensitive Marine Areas (EBSAs), but this has been limited to a handful of migratory species representing a tiny percentage (<1%) of shark biodiversity (Kot et al., 2014). Sawfishes (Pristidae) are large shark-like batoids (rays) that are among the most threatened of all marine fishes. While there is a broad consensus of severe sawfish declines globally, detailed status assessments for most of their vast circumtropical distribution do not exist. This paper reviews sawfishes of waters adjacent to the Arabian Peninsula, focusing on the Gulf., Until around the 1960s, sawfishes were abundant and widespread in the region, but since around the 1980s, they have been rarely recorded. Sawfishes can now be considered extinct as a functional component of coastal ecosystems, and may be close to being regionally extinct. This assessment is based on the overwhelming weight of evidence from diverse sources such as archaeological data, historical accounts, grey literature, personal communications and extensive fish surveys., Based on 176 individual records, Pristis zijsron was the most frequently recorded species, occurring in all regional seas. Anoxypristis cuspidata records were limited to the coasts of Iran, Pakistan, and Masirah Island (Oman). The first substantiated Pristis pristis records from the Arabian Peninsula are provided, and two records not identifiable to species do not exclude the possibility that Pristis clavata occurs in the region., Humans have used sawfishes as a food, oil, trade, and cultural resource for several thousands of years. Fins have been highly valued since at least the mid-19th century., Based on recent and historical records, known biology, and marine conservation programmes for other species or habitats, priority areas for sawfish research and recovery programmes are the central southern Gulf; significant mangrove areas in Iran and the UAE; the Musandam Peninsula; and Masirah Island (Oman)., Historical regional declines coincide with the widespread availability of nylon gillnets, to which sawfishes are disproportionately vulnerable. The northwestern Indian Ocean harbors a number of larger marine vertebrate taxa that warrant the investigation of genetic population structure given remarkable spatial heterogeneity in biological characteristics such as distribution, behavior, and morphology. Here, we investigate the genetic population structure of four commercially exploited shark species with different biological characteristics ( Carcharhinus limbatus, Carcharhinus sorrah, Rhizoprionodon acutus, and Sphyrna lewini) between the Red Sea and all other water bodies surrounding the Arabian Peninsula. To assess intraspecific patterns of connectivity, we constructed statistical parsimony networks among haplotypes and estimated (1) population structure; and (2) time of most recent population expansion, based on mitochondrial control region DNA and a total of 20 microsatellites. Our analysis indicates that, even in smaller, less vagile shark species, there are no contemporary barriers to gene flow across the study region, while historical events, for example, Pleistocene glacial cycles, may have affected connectivity in C. sorrah and R. acutus. A parsimony network analysis provided evidence that Arabian S. lewini may represent a population segment that is distinct from other known stocks in the Indian Ocean, raising a new layer of conservation concern. New biological data relevant to the conservation of the rare and threatened shark Carcharhinus leiodon are presented, based on specimens sampled in fish markets in Kuwait, the UAE and Yemen. The maximum size of this species is extended to 1648 mm total length (TL); females are mature by at least 1312 mm TL and demonstrate placental viviparity with litters of 4-6 embryos. In the north-western Persian Gulf there is evidence that parturition occurs in spring when embryos are ~350-515 mm TL, with at least some neonate individuals probably remaining in the area through the summer. Further records of C. leiodon from the western Arabian Sea indicate that adults are present in this region throughout the year. Landings of C. leiodon apparently caught in the eastern Persian Gulf may extend the highly fragmented known distribution of this species. Contrary to an earlier study, the first detailed examination of dissected adult C. leiodon jaws revealed that fine serrations are present on upper teeth, and characters are provided to separate the dentition and jaws of C. leiodon from congeners. The stomach of an adult C. leiodon contained bentho-demersal fish, and an individual with fin abnormalities is noted. Known only from Arabian waters, the smoothtooth blacktip shark is poorly understood. This work aims to address knowledge gaps and presents new data on aspects including size, reproduction and distribution. The smoothtooth blacktip shark, Carcharhinus leiodon, is one of the rarest whaler shark species of the genus Carcharhinus, previously known only from the holotype collected over 100 years ago from the Arabian Sea coast of Yemen. Recent market surveys in the Persian (Arabian) Gulf rediscovered 25 specimens (~2% of individual sharks recorded) in Kuwait, ~3000km away from the type location. This study combined morphometric and molecular approaches to provide a detailed redescription of this species based on new material, as well as the first information on fresh colouration, size range and maturity. Sequences from two separate regions of the mitochondrial genome (COI and ND2) support the identity of C. leiodon as a distinct species, closely related to C. limbatus, C. amblyrhynchoides and C. tilstoni. Carcharhinus leiodon is superficially similar to, but clearly distinct from, C. melanopterus and C. amblyrhynchoides. The previously uncertain type locality of C. leiodon is considered to be correct, and the narrow range and unusual disjunct distribution, relatively rare for a marine carcharhinid, is discussed. The Kuwait population of C. leiodon, including juveniles, is subject to fisheries by-catch and is in an area of extensive habitat alteration. The features of the specimens of Snaggletooth shark, Hemipristis elongatus, Grey Reef shark, Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos, Graceful shark, Carcharhinus amblyrhynchoides, Hardnose shark, Carcharhinus macloti, Sliteye shark, Loxodon macrorhinus and Sharptooth/Sicklefin Lemon shark are provided. The areas where the sharks are sighted are also given.

The article describes a specimen of the Smalleye Stingray, Dasyatis microps, a rare species that is found in the central Gulf coast of Iran. In addition to its broad disc, the stingray has large and long spiracles, small eyes and a grey brown dorsal surface. Its pectoral fins have white spots, while the tail is broad at the base that narrows to the tip. The location of its discovery support records of its affinity for the shallow inshore.

In the past 20 years, huge strides have been made to improve the conservation status of sharks, rays and chimaeras ("sharks" here), including substantial international policy achievements (e.g. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species and Convention on Migratory Species listings, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations "Shark Plans"; Davidson, Krawchuk, & Dulvy, [1]). Perhaps most importantly, the biology and policy-led shark conservation movement will need to significantly bolster its social science expertise to begin to understand the complex human dimensions of shark fisheries in LDCs, including the decision-making of those reliant on sharks (e.g. as in Jaiteh, Loneragan, & Warren, [4]). Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia. The APOE-ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset AD. The APOE genotype modulates the effect of sleep disruption on AD risk, suggesting a possible link between apoE and sleep in AD pathogenesis, which is relatively unexplored. We hypothesized that apoE modifies Aβ deposition and Aβ plaque--associated tau seeding and spreading in the form of neuritic plaque--tau (NPtau) pathology in response to chronic sleep deprivation (SD) in an apoE isoform--dependent fashion. To test this hypothesis, we used APPPS1 mice expressing human APOE-ε3 or -ε4 with or without AD-tau injection. We found that SD in APPPS1 mice significantly increased Aβ deposition and peri-plaque NP-tau pathology in the presence of APOE4 but not APOE3. SD in APPPS1 mice significantly decreased microglial clustering around plaques and aquaporin-4 (AQP4) polarization around blood vessels in the presence of APOE4 but not APOE3. We also found that sleep-deprived APPPS1:E4 mice injected with AD-tau had significantly altered sleep behaviors compared with APPPS1:E3 mice. A new stingray, Hemitrygon yemenensis sp. nov., is described from old preserved material collected on the Arabian Sea coast of eastern Yemen. Consistent with other members of the genus, H. yemenensis sp. nov. is a small dasyatid (males mature at ~22 cm disc width), but it is the only Hemitrygon known to occur outside the western Pacific and eastern Indian Oceans. Hemitrygon yemenensis sp. nov. most closely resembles H. bennetti, but H. yemenensis is separable based on several characters including a longer and more narrowly pointed snout, shorter tail, and a longer disc and head. Hemitrygon yemenensis is unknown to science beyond the two type specimens collected nearly 120 years ago.

The eagle ray Aetobatus flagellum (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) is redescribed based on new material from the Persian Gulf (Kuwait), Indonesia and Malaysia. A related but distinct species of Aetobatus from the western North Pacific, previously referred to as A. flagellum, is reported. Aetobatus flagellum is a medium-sized eagle ray which attains about 900 mm DW; males mature at approximately 500 mm DW. Aetobatus flagellum appears to be uncommon and restricted to estuary-influenced waters of the Indo-West Pacific. It is caught as gillnet bycatch where its habit of schooling, combined with probable small litter size, may make it particularly vulnerable to impacts from fisheries.
