Abstract

There has been some attempt to include sharks within Ecologically or Biologically Sensitive Marine Areas (EBSAs), but this has been limited to a handful of migratory species representing a tiny percentage (<1%) of shark biodiversity (Kot et al., 2014). The recent announcement (Hoyt & Notarbartolo di Sciara, 2021) of the completion of entry selection for Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs), a spatial tool for conservation, brings into sharp focus the need for Important Shark Areas (ISAs).
