Avocado ripening entails intricate physicochemical transformations resulting in desirable characteristics for consumption; however, its impact on specific metabolites and its cultivar dependence remains largely unexplored. This study employed LC-MS to quantitatively monitor 30 avocado pulp metabolites, including phenolic compounds, amino acids, nucleosides, vitamins, phytohormones, and related compounds, from unripe to overripe stages, in three commercial varieties (Hass, Fuerte, and Bacon). Multivariate statistical analysis revealed significant metabolic variations between cultivars, leading to the identification of potential varietal markers. Most monitored metabolites exhibited dynamic quantitative changes. Although phenolic compounds generally increased during ripening, exceptions such as epicatechin and chlorogenic acid were noted. Amino acids and derivatives displayed a highly cultivar-dependent evolution, with Fuerte demonstrating the highest concentrations and most pronounced fluctuations. In contrast to penstemide, uridine and abscisic acid levels consistently increased during ripening. Spain dominates avocado production in Europe, with the Hass variety being the most prominent. Despite this, Spanish production satisfies less than 10% of the overall avocado demand in Europe. Consequently, the European avocado market heavily relies on imports from overseas, primarily sourced from Peru and Chile. Herein, a comprehensive characterization of the metabolic profile of Hass avocado fruits from Spain, Peru, and Chile, available in the European market throughout the year, was carried out. The determination of relevant substances was performed using high- and low-resolution RP-LC-MS. Remarkable quantitative differences regarding phenolic compounds, amino acids, and nucleosides were observed. Principal component analysis revealed a natural clustering of avocados according to geographical origin. Moreover, a specific metabolic pattern was established for each avocado-producing country using supervised partial least squares discriminant analysis. Spanish fruits exhibited high levels of coumaric acid malonyl-hexose II, coumaric acid hexose II, and ferulic acid hexose II, together with considerably low levels of pantothenic acid and uridine. Chilean avocado fruits presented high concentrations of abscisic acid, uridine, ferulic acid, succinic acid, and tryptophan. Fruits from Peru showed high concentrations of dihydroxybenzoic acid hexose, alongside very low levels of p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, coumaric acid malonyl-hexose I, and ferulic acid hexose II.

The adaptation and performance of CIMMYT's bread wheat germplasm (Triticum aestivum L.) under conditions of low N fertility have been questioned because they were developed under medium-high levels of N fertility. The objectives of this research were to (i) compare the performance of a set of tag vs. semidwarf cultivars developed by CIMMYT that were widely grown by farmers in the Yaqui Valley of Mexico at low and high N fertility, (ii) measure the genetic progress in grain yield and N use efficiency (NUE), and (iii) evaluate the contribution of N uptake efficiency (UPE) and utilization efficiency (UTE) to NUE. Ten wheat cultivars, two tall and eight semidwarf, produced by CIMMYT and released in the Yaqui Valley of Sonora, by the Mexican government from 1950 to 1985 were grown with 0, 75, 150, or 300 kg N [ha.sup.-1] in a 3-yr field study at Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico. Genetic gains in both grain yield and NUE during 1950 to 1985 were 1.1, 1.0, 1.2, and 1.9% [yr.sup.-1] on a relative basis or 32, 43, 59, and 89 kg [ha.sup.-1] [yr.sup.-1] on an absolute basis, when provided 0, 75, 150, and 300 kg [ha.sup.-1] N, respectively. Progress in NUE resulted in an improvement of both UPE and UTE. However, the relative importance of these two components was affected by the level of applied N. These results contradict the belief that modern semidwarf cultivars require more N than older cultivars. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) breeders often try to simultaneously improve grain yield and bread-making quality. This study examined changes in CIMMYT's wheat germplasm with respect to grain protein concentration (GPC)-and grain protein quality (GPQ)-related parameters and assessed the importance of these parameters in determining bread-making quality, when wheat cultivars were grown with 0, 75, 150, or 300 kg N [ha.sup.-1]. A 3-yr field study was established with 10 cultivars representing breeding progress from 1950 to 1985. Floor protein concentration (FPC), sodium dodecyl sulfatese-dimentation (SDS-S), alveogram W (ALVW), alveogram P/G (ALVPG), bread loaf volume (LV), and GPC were evaluated. At low N (0 and 75 kg [ha.sup.-1]), there was no difference in GPC among cultivars. In contrast, at higher N (150 and 300 kg [ha.sup.-1]), there was a linear reduction in GPC with respect to the year of release. However, when the two tall, older cultivars and cv. Siete Cerros 66, an outlier, were removed from the analysis, there was a negative trend between GPC and year of release but only at the 300 kg N [ha.sup.-1] level. There was no How trend in year of release for GPQ parameters or LV. Loaf volume was most consistently correlated with SDS-S across the different levels of N compared with GPC, FPC, ALVW, or ALVPG. However, GPC and LV showed a highly significant correlation only when the two soft wheat cultivars were removed from analysis. Use of semidwarf germplasm in CIMMYT's wheat breeding program initially resulted in increased grain yield and reduced GPC. Background: Negative views of aging (NVOA), low self-efficacy beliefs, and poor goal planning skills represent risk factors that undermine adults' motivation to engage in physical activity (PA). Targeting these three risk factors may motivate adults to become physically active., Objective: To assess the efficacy of Aging PLUS , a 4-week educational program that explicitly targets NVOA, low self-efficacy beliefs, and poor goal planning skills compared to a 4-week health education program. The study also examines the role of NVOA, self-efficacy beliefs, and goal planning as the mechanisms underlying change in PA., Design: This randomized controlled trial (RCT) utilizes the experimental medicine approach to assess change in PA as a function of modifying three risk factors. The RCT recruitment target includes 288 mostly sedentary adults ranging in age from 45 to 75 years., Methods: Eligible middle-aged and older adults are recruited through community sources. Participants are randomized to either the Aging PLUS or the control group. An important portion of vitamins, minerals and polyphenols components in human diet are captured from fruit consumption. Argentinean Patagonia Berberis microphylla was characterized with the phenolic content, the proximate composition and the identification and quantification of anthocyanins, not-anthocyanins and proteins. The antioxidant capacity of berberis ethanolic extracts (EB) was determined by the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. EB was used to reduce production of reactive substances species (ROS) in zebrafish. EB presented a total polyphenols content of 1,035.03 mg GAE/100 g fresh weight (FW). EB presented an ABTS value of 116.25 ± 17 μmol TE/g FW. EB presented a DPPH value of 137.80 ± 1.90 μmol TE/g FW. EB was able of reducing the ROS in zebrafish. Berberies Protein Isolate (BPI) presented proteins with bands from 15 to 62 kDa. BPI presented an ABTS value of 593.11 ± 8.60 μmol TE/g. The BPI duodenal digest presented a value of 641.07 ± 12.60 μmol TE/g digests. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The practical applications of the present study are to increase scientific knowledge for consumers about the quality and benefits of the consumption of the native fruit (Berberis microphylla) from the Patagonia region of Argentine. This work describes the protein profile of berberies, their digestibility and their antioxidant activity. This study allows to better understand the phytonutrients that make up this fruit. Future studies may identify the peptides present in hydrolyzates. Plant growth, crop yield, and pest and disease control are enhanced by PGPR (Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria), which are beneficial microorganisms found in a close symbiosis with plant roots. Phytohormones are secreted, nutrient uptake is improved, and soil properties along with the microbiological environment are regulated by these microorganisms, making them a significant focus in agricultural research. In this study, the efficient PGPR strain T1 was isolated and screened from tobacco inter-root soil, and identified and confirmed by ITS sequencing technology. Tobacco growth indicators and soil property changes were observed and recorded through potting experiments. The activities of key enzymes (e.g., sucrase, catalase, urease) in soil were further determined. High-throughput sequencing technology was utilized to sequence the soil microbial community, and combined with macro-genomics analysis, the effects of T1 strain on soil microbial diversity and metabolic pathways were explored. Following the application of T1, significant improvements were observed in the height, leaf length, and width of tobacco plants. Furthermore, the physical and chemical properties of the soil were notably enhanced, including a 26.26% increase in phosphorus availability. Additionally, the activities of key soil enzymes such as sucrase, catalase, and urease were significantly increased, indicating improved soil health and fertility. Comprehensive joint microbiomics and macrogenomics analyses revealed a substantial rise in the populations of beneficial soil microorganisms and an enhancement in metabolic pathways, including amino acid metabolism, synthesis, and production of secondary metabolites. These increase in beneficial microorganisms and the enhancement of their metabolic functions are crucial for plant growth and soil fertility. Drawing on more than 30 years of nationally representative microdata from the General Social Survey, this article comprehensively updates recent trends in ideal family size in the United States. It first documents stability in ideal family sizes between the mid-1980s and 2018, even in the face of a recent fertility decline. Next, the study adopts a latent class approach that identifies typologies of "reproductive orientations," defined as multidimensional mental models of reproduction encompassing ideal family size, attitudes toward reproductive labor, and views on reproduction contexts. The findings indicate three distinct classes of reproductive orientations: Progressive Familialists, Conservative Familialists, and Blended Egalitarians. Further analyses suggest that the prevalence of these classes has changed over time and that class membership is associated with distinct patterns of childbearing and marriage. These findings deepen contemporary understandings of ideal family size in the United States and have broader implications for how demographers conceptualize and measure fertility preferences across diverse contexts. A scenario of conflict, as in the Colombian case, may be related to the socio-political context in which the Gospel according to Mark may have been written, and therefore offers new insights for the understanding of the narrative phenomena presented. In effect, Mark could have been a response to the traumatic experiences of the followers of Jesus to whom the Gospel was addressed. Likewise, the experience of those displaced and exiled by the Colombian armed conflict has involved a series of traumatic events, but also bears witness to processes of resilient reparation. Against this background, it is proposed that in Mark, the figure of Peter, courageous and determined at the beginning but cowardly and flighty at the end, is analogous to that of many victims in the Colombian armed conflict who, faced with the imminent danger of losing their lives, were forced to abandon their deepest convictions and even their loved ones to end up fleeing into hiding and exile. Nevertheless, both Mark and the experience of those displaced and exiled because of the conflict in Colombia suggest the possibility of vindication of these victims and their respective narratives, helping them to recognize that their flight was not a betrayal and that, thanks to it, the memory of the events can be reconstructed to guarantee the truth and the non-repetition of the facts. We develop a theory of reversible diffusion-controlled reactions with generalized binding/unbinding kinetics. In this framework, a diffusing particle can bind to the reactive substrate after a random number of arrivals onto it, with a given threshold distribution. The particle remains bound to the substrate for a random waiting time drawn from another given distribution and then resumes its bulk diffusion until the next binding and so on. When both distributions are exponential, one retrieves the conventional first-order forward and backward reactions whose reversible kinetics is described by generalized Collins–Kimball's (or back-reaction) boundary condition. In turn, if either of distributions is not exponential, one deals with generalized (non-Markovian) binding or unbinding kinetics (or both). Combining renewal technique with the encounter-based approach, we derive spectral expansions for the propagator, the concentration of particles, and the diffusive flux on the substrate. We study their long-time behavior and reveal how anomalous rarity of binding or unbinding events due to heavy tails of the threshold and waiting time distributions may affect such reversible diffusion-controlled reactions. Sowing date and soil fertility are very important factors in the overwintering and production performance of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), yet there's a knowledge gap in knowledge on how late-seeded alfalfa responds to phosphorus (P) fertilization. A field study was conducted in Inner Mongolia from 2020 to 2022 using a split-plot design. The main plots consisted of five sowing dates (31 July, 8, 16, and 24 August, and 1 September), while the subplots involved five P application rates (0, 40, 70, 100, and 130 kg P2O5 ha−1). Throughout the growing seasons, the overwintering rate, root traits, forage yield, and yield components were measured. The results revealed a consistent decrease in overwintering ability and productivity with the delayed sowing. This reduction in overwintering rate was mainly due to diminished root traits, while the decrease in forage yield was largely associated with a reduction in plants per square meter. However, P fertilizer application to late-seeded alfalfa demonstrated potential in enhancing the diameter of both the crown and taproot, thus strengthening the root system and improving the overwintering rate, the rate of increase ranges from 11.6 to 49%. This adjustment could also improve the shoots per square meter and mass per shoot, increasing by 9.4–31.3% and 15.0–27.1% respectively in 2 years, which can offset the decline in forage yield caused by late sowing and might even increase the forage yield. Regression and path analysis indicated that alfalfa forage yield is primarily affected by mass per shoot rather than shoots per square meter. This study recommended that the sowing of alfalfa in similar regions of Inner Mongolia should not be later than mid-August. Moreover, applying P fertilizer (P2O5) at 70.6–85.9 kg ha−1 can enhance the forage yield and persistence of late-seeded alfalfa. Therefore, appropriate late sowing combined with the application of P fertilizer can be used as an efficient cultivation strategy for alfalfa cultivation after a short-season crop harvest in arid and cold regions. Background: The efficacy of a current program of positive cylinder treatment was evaluated and compared to a previous program of negative cylinder treatment., Methods: The authors performed a comparative analysis of 123 eyes (72 patients) who underwent LASIK using the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser with the formula developed by Chayet and the positive cylinder (71 eyes of 52 patients) and negative cylinder programs (52 eyes of 31 patients)., Results: A faster stabilization of correction and a marked reduction of stromal tissue ablated were obtained with the positive cylinder program than with the negative cylinder program. This was directly related to the amount of preoperative ametropia., Conclusion: The spectrum of ametropias that can be treated with LASIK is increased with the positive cylinder program because less tissue is ablated.

Two strains of a hitherto undescribed Gram-positive catalase-negative, facultatively anaerobic coccus isolated from human sources were characterized by phenotypic and molecular taxonomic methods. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies demonstrated the unknown strains were genealogically identical, and constitute a new line close to, but distinct from, the genera Facklamia and Globicatella. The unknown bacterium was readily distinguished from Facklamia species and Globicatella sanguinus by biochemical tests and electrophoretic analysis of whole-cell proteins. Based on phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence it is proposed that the unknown bacterium be classified as Ignavigranum ruoffiae gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Ignavigranum ruoffiae is CCUG 37658T.

Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies demonstrated that the unknown strains are genealogically identical and constitute a new line close to, but distinct from, Facklamia hominis. The unknown bacterium was readily distinguished from F. hominis by biochemical tests and electrophoretic analysis of whole-cell proteins. On the basis of phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence, it is proposed that the unknown bacterium be classified as Facklamia ignava sp. nov. The type strain of Facklamia ignava is CCUG 37419.

Fourteen strains of a hitherto unknown catalase-positive, aerobic, gram-positive coryneformlike organism were isolated from the milk of sheep with subclinical mastitis from different regions of Spain. The strains phenotypically closely resembled one another and biochemically were similar to Corynebacterium urealyticum and Corynebacterium afermentans subsp. lipophilum. The results of chemotaxonomic investigations were consistent with membership in the genus Corynebacterium, and comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies showed that the unknown bacterium from sheep was indeed a member of the genus Corynebacterium. Within the genus Corynebacterium the new bacterium formed a distinct subline that exhibited > 4% sequence divergence with other species. Based on both phenotypic and phylogenetic findings, a new species, Corynebacterium mastitidis, is proposed for the organisms from mastitic sheep. The type strain of C. mastitidis is CECT 4843 (= S-8).

Berberis vulgaris (L.) has remarkable ethnopharmacological properties and is widely used in traditional medicine. The present study investigated B. vulgaris stem bark (Berberidis cortex) by extraction with 50% ethanol. The main secondary metabolites were quantified, resulting in a polyphenols content of 17.6780 ± 3.9320 mg Eq tannic acid/100 g extract, phenolic acids amount of 3.3886 ± 0.3481 mg Eq chlorogenic acid/100 g extract and 78.95 µg/g berberine. The dried hydro-ethanolic extract (BVE) was thoroughly analyzed using Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC–HRMS/MS) and HPLC, and 40 bioactive phenolic constituents were identified. Then, the antioxidant potential of BVE was evaluated using three methods. Our results could explain the protective effects of Berberidis cortex EC50FRAP = 0.1398 mg/mL, IC50ABTS = 0.0442 mg/mL, IC50DPPH = 0.2610 mg/mL compared to ascorbic acid (IC50 = 0.0165 mg/mL). Next, the acute toxicity and teratogenicity of BVE and berberine—berberine sulfate hydrate (BS)—investigated on Daphnia sp. revealed significant BS toxicity after 24 h, while BVE revealed considerable toxicity after 48 h and induced embryonic developmental delays. Finally, the anticancer effects of BVE and BS were evaluated in different tumor cell lines after 24 and 48 h of treatments. The MTS assay evidenced dose- and time-dependent antiproliferative activity, which was higher for BS than BVE. The strongest diminution of tumor cell viability was recorded in the breast (MDA-MB-231), colon (LoVo) cancer, and OSCC (PE/CA-PJ49) cell lines after 48 h of exposure (IC50 < 100 µg/mL). However, no cytotoxicity was reported in the normal epithelial cells (HUVEC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HT-29) cell lines. Extensive data analysis supports our results, showing a significant correlation between the BVE concentration, phenolic compounds content, antioxidant activity, exposure time, and the viability rate of various normal cells and cancer cell lines. This article examines how different forms of digitalization affect inequality in Europe. Using a cross-national dataset of economic development and digitalization across a range of regression specifications including country and time fixed effects, this article explores the heterogeneous relationships of disparate forms of digitalization -- human capital, broadband connectivity, integration of digital technology into small and medium enterprises, and digital public services -- with income inequality. Fixed country and time effects models show that only the digitalization of human capital and integration of digital technology by SMEs are associated with decreases in income inequality. Causal mediation analysis reveals that tertiary education, despite its oft-cited connection to digital technology uptake, has no causal effect on the pathways through which digitalization of labour and SME operations lower inequality, which are direct. The findings tentatively suggest that there exist informal sources of digital skills training apart from formal tertiary education and point to SMEs as a potentially impactful area for investing in digitalization as pathways for income redistribution. Active Brownian particles (ABPs) are a model for nonequilibrium systems in which the constituent particles are self-propelled in addition to their Brownian motion. Compared to the well-studied mean first passage time (MFPT) of passive Brownian particles, the MFPT of ABPs is much less developed. In this paper, we study the MFPT for ABPs in a 1-D domain with absorbing boundary conditions at both ends of the domain. To reveal the effect of swimming on the MFPT, we consider an asymptotic analysis in the weak-swimming or small Péclet (Pe) number limit. In particular, analytical expressions for the survival probability and the MFPT are developed up to O (Pe²). We explore the effects of the starting positions and starting orientations on the MFPT. Our analysis shows that if the starting orientations are biased towards one side of the domain, the MFPT as a function of the starting position becomes asymmetric about the center of the domain. Agroindustry waste has exponentially increased in recent years, generating economic losses and environmental problems. In addition, new ways to generate sustainable alternative electrical energy are currently being sought to satisfy energy demand. This investigation proposes using avocado waste as fuel for electricity generation in single-chamber MFCs. The avocado waste initially operated with an ambient temperature (22.4 ± 0.01 °C), DO of 2.54 ± 0.01 mg/L, TDS of 1358 ± 1 mg/L and COD of 1487.25 ± 0.01 mg/L. This research managed to generate its maximum voltage (0.861 ± 0.241 V) and current (3.781 ± 0.667 mA) on the fourteenth day, operating at an optimal pH of 7.386 ± 0.147, all with 126.032 ± 8.888 mS/cm of electrical conductivity in the substrate. An internal resistance of 67.683 ± 2.456 Ω was found on day 14 with a PD of 365.16 ± 9.88 mW/cm2 for a CD of 5.744 A/cm2. Micrographs show the formation of porous biofilms on both the anodic and cathodic electrodes. This study gives preliminary results of using avocado waste as fuel, which can provide outstanding solutions to agro-industrial companies dedicated to selling this fruit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Certain biochemical reactions can only be triggered after binding a sufficient number of particles to a specific target region such as an enzyme or a protein sensor. We investigate the distribution of the reaction time, i.e., the first instance when all independently diffusing particles are bound to the target. When each particle binds irreversibly, this is equivalent to the first-passage time of the slowest (last) particle. In turn, reversible binding to the target renders the problem much more challenging and drastically changes the distribution of the reaction time. We derive the exact solution of this problem and investigate the short-time and long-time asymptotic behaviors of the reaction time probability density. We also analyze how the mean reaction time depends on the unbinding rate and the number of particles. Our exact and asymptotic solutions are compared to Monte Carlo simulations. BACKGROUND: Research suggests that, following major changes in women's roles in developed societies, gender relations within heterosexual partnerships are entering a second stage, during which men's roles are the main source of change. Some scholars suggest that changes in gender roles occur differentially across social classes, as reflected in variation across educational groups. OBJECTIVE: We ask how variation in the educational level of both partners is related to: (1) gender role attitudes and housework contributions of each partner; and (2) consensus between partners on egalitarian gender role attitudes, and gaps between partners in housework hours. METHODS: Analyzing British Household Panel Survey and Understanding Society data on currently married, heterosexual partnerships in the United Kingdom (1992-2018) from a couplelevel perspective, we compare across four educational types defined by whether partners have a tertiary-level degree. RESULTS: We find that (1) it is not the male partner's but rather the female partner's tertiary education that is a key factor in understanding variation in partners' gender role attitudes and housework hours, as well as couple-level consensus on gender egalitarian attitudes and between-partner differences in housework hours; and (2) gender gaps in housework hours between partners are smallest among couples in which women are highly educated, primarily because highly educated women do substantially fewer hours than less educated women rather than because their partners do substantially more hours. The present study evaluated the performance of some enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems against oxidative stress for 10 to 30 d of refrigeration (R) and 15 to 50 d in controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions in both exocarp and mesocarp of Hass avocados from early and late harvests and at shelf life (SL) or consumption maturity. The possible relationship of the antioxidant systems with the occurrence of physiological disorders is also evaluated. The results indicate that the enzymatic system—superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), phenylalanine ammonium lyase (PAL) and polyphenoloxidase (PPO)—as well as the non-enzymatic system—such as phenolic compounds (PC)—showed different responses to the stress generated during storage and shelf life. In general, SOD, CAT, PAL and PPO did not significantly vary in storage (R or CA). At consumption maturity, SOD, POD and PAL activities decreased in the mesocarp (RSL and CASL), while CAT increased in the exocarp for CASL15-50d. PC instead decreased in the exocarp as the harvest period progressed while it increased in the mesocarp. Physiological disorders (dark spots) showed only in refrigeration on the exocarp at R30d and in mesocarp at RSL30d coincident with low SOD and low SOD and POD activity values, as well as low PC contents (p-coumaric and its derivatives and caffeic acid derivatives), respectively. The results support the use of CA as a postharvest technology to prevent the development of physiological disorders through the joint action of antioxidative defenses during avocado transport to distant markets until consumption maturity is reached. A Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, oval beaded-shape, oxidase-negative, and non-motile bacterium designated DM20194951T was isolated from a spoiled eye mask obtained from Guangdong, China. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence, phylogenetic analysis indicated that strain DM20194951T showed the highest sequence similarity (95.8%) to Fundicoccus ignavus WS4937T. Meanwhile, strain DM20194951T could be distinguished from the type strains in the genus Fundicoccus by distinct phenotypic and genotypic traits. Strain DM20194951T grew variably with 1–2% (w/v) NaCl and tolerated pH 6.0–10.0. Growth was observed from 28 to 37 °C. The diagnostic diamino acids in the cell-wall peptidoglycan consisted of aspartic and glutamic acids as well as alanine. The predominant fatty acids were C18:1ω9c, C16:0, and C16:1ω9c. In the polar lipid profile, two glycolipids, three phospholipids, one phosphatidylglycerol, and one diphosphatidylglycerol were found. No respiratory quinones were detected. The DM20194951T genome is 3.2 Mb in size and contains a G + C content of 38.1%. A gene cluster for lactococcin 972 family bacteriocin production was found in the DM20194951T genome. Based on morphological, genotypic, and phylogenetic data, strain DM20194951T should be considered to represent a novel species in the genus Fundicoccus, for which the name Fundicoccus culcitae sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain DM20194951T (= KCTC 43472T = GDMCC 1.3614T). Mulching suppresses weeds, improves soil biology, and increases physical or bioactive fruit yield in fruit orchards. However, there is no information on its impact on calafate (Berberis microphylla G. Forst.) orchards, which produce berries with high antioxidant content. To address this gap, in 2021, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of 5 years of mulching on soil, plants, and calafate fruit. Four mulching treatments were established: no mulch (control), geotextile, oat straw, and hazelnut shell. All mulches suppressed weeds (43%) and maintained more soil moisture (5%) than the control. Soil microbial activity increased only with hazelnut shell compared with the control, up to 46%. Only oat straw and hazelnut shell increased basal respiration and urease up to 31% and 15% more than the control. Oat straw produced the highest fruit yield with 0.44 t ha−1, while the lowest yield was produced by the control and hazelnut shell with 0.1 and 0.15 t ha−1, respectively. The geotextile with 0.35 t ha−1 of fruit produced no differences between treatments. The ORAC antioxidant capacity was only higher in the control and hazelnut shell, with a mean of 3272 µmol TE 100 g−1. The need for cement as a housing construction material has continued to increase due to the growing population. This high demand increases carbon dioxide emissions. Hence, it is necessary to optimize the use of natural pozzolan material. Volcanic ash is a natural pozzolan material in North Sulawesi, but its use could be more optimal. This study aimed to determine the effect of calcination on the physical properties of volcanic ash originating from the eruption of Mount Lokon. The calcination was carried out to determine the potential of Lokon ash at different temperatures to assess the structural characteristics, mineral phases, metal oxide composition, functional group bonding, morphology, and its potential as a binder for concrete mixtures. The ash material used comes from sand taken from the Pasahapen River and filtered through a 325-mesh sieve. Lokon ash was calcined at temperatures of 800, 900, and 1000oC to determine the structural and morphological characteristics. At the same time, the effects were examined using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results showed that calcination triggered the formation of hematite in the ash, which will increase its reactivity as a pozzolan material. This process causes the crystallinity of ash minerals to increase, but the ash material produced is predominantly amorphous. In this study, four different olive fruit and leaf varieties collected in Jordan were assessed for quality using both chemical and biological methods. To quantify the phenol and antioxidant content in the olive fruit and leaf extracts, a validated UV method was employed. The antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of fruit and leaf extracts of the olive varieties were measured using the DPPH radical scavenging assay and Folin–Ciocalteu colorimetric method, respectively. The researchers also conducted a biological assay against colon cells to examine the potential health benefits of the olive extracts. The results showed that the phenol content of the samples varied depending on the region they were collected from and that they contained a significant amount of antioxidants. Additionally, it was observed that the samples with higher antioxidant content had lower cell viability against colon cells. Overall, this study suggests that olive extracts may have potential health benefits for colon health and that the phenol and antioxidant content of the extracts can vary depending on the source of the olives. When water and nutrients are not limiting, and pests and disease are effectively controlled, crop growth and yield is determined by weather conditions such as temperature and solar radiation. To determine the relationship between weather indices and crop yield, multiple wheat varieties were sown at two sowing times, for five sowing seasons and at two locations. The following weather indices around the 50% anthesis stage were recorded and analysed: mean temperature (T mean), maximum temperature (T max), number of days with temperature >30°C (T30), vapour pressure deficit (VPD), photosynthetically active radiation, photothermal quotient (PQ) and photothermal quotient corrected for vapour pressure deficit (PQvpd). Overall, for every 1°C rise in temperature, crop yield decreased by 370 kg/ha. For every 1°C rise in temperature, normal sowing window yield decreased by 360 kg/ha while late-sown wheat yield decreased by 640 kg/ha. Correlation analysis was conducted between the weather indices and grain number, grain yield and grain protein. There was a significant positive correlation between PQ and PQvpd and grain number and grain yield. There was a significant negative correlation between T mean, T max, T30 and VPD and grain number and grain yield. Grain protein content showed a positive correlation with maximum air temperature and a negative correlation with the weather indices PQ and PQvpd. PQ and PQvpd can be used to predict grain number and grain yield potential. The increment in the demand for high-frequency monolithic integrated circuits has driven the development of waveguide-to-microstrip transition that allow their characterization and integration with waveguide components. Unfortunately, when return losses are taken into account, these transitions feature a rather narrow bandwidth, especially when the substrate is inserted transversal to the propagation direction of the waveguide. Here, we present a new scalable design that overcomes this problem. The transition was originally designed for a bandwidth of 33.5–60 GHz (extended V-band) with the simulation results showing reflections below − 19.5 dB in a fractional bandwidth of 55%. To validate the design, we show the scaling, construction, and measurement in an extended Q-band (27–50 GHz) with the additional advantage of having a standard impedance of 50 Ω. The most novel feature is a staggered air cavity for the microstrip and planar probe, which generates return losses better than 20 dB in a fractional bandwidth of 53%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Comprehending the variability in the chemical composition of olive oil from the same olive variety, based on its geographical origin, is essential. This study investigated the chemical composition of Chétoui olive oils from thirteen mills located in Northern Tunisia's Béja region. The chemical composition of olive oil exhibits substantial regional variability. Free acidity ranged from 0.57% to 0.73%, and peroxide values varied between 7.33 and 14.00 meq O2/kg. Total phenolic content varied as well, with values ranging from 906.53 to 1,298.60 caffeic acid eq/kg (oils from Amdoun and Testour II, respectively). Chlorophyll contents ranged from 2.03 to 7.85 mg/kg, and carotenoids from 1.28 to 3.92 mg/kg. Olive oils from Amdoun and Dogga II were the richest in these compounds. In terms of tocopherols, the range extended from 282.88 mg/kg (oil from Tibar) to 416.79 mg/kg (oil from Testour II). DPPH radical scavenging activity of the polar fraction of all olive oils was higher than that of the non-polar fraction. Fatty acid profiles were mostly similar with exception of the oil from Tibar with lower saturated fatty acid content and higher monounsaturated fatty acid content. Substantial differences in polyunsaturated fatty acid content were found. Triacylglycerol compositions differed as well, with the lowest triolein percentage around 13.66% and the highest at approximately 34.98%. In summary, this study reveals significant regional variations in the chemical composition of Chétoui monovarietal olive oil, highlighting the collection region impact on oil quality and nutritional properties. Lower awareness of age-related gains (AARC-gains) and higher awareness of age-related losses (AARC-losses) may be risk factors for depressive and anxiety symptoms. We explored whether: (1) Baseline AARC-gains and AARC-losses predict depressive and anxiety symptoms at one-year follow-up; (2) age and rumination moderate these associations; (3) levels of AARC-gains and AARC-losses differ among individuals with different combinations of current and past depression and/or with different combinations of current and past anxiety. In this one-year longitudinal cohort study participants (N = 3386; mean age = 66.0; SD = 6.93) completed measures of AARC-gains, AARC-losses, rumination, depression, anxiety, and lifetime diagnosis of depression and anxiety in 2019 and 2020. Regression models with tests of interaction were used. Higher AARC-losses, but not lower AARC-gains, predicted more depressive and anxiety symptoms. Age did not moderate these associations. Associations of lower AARC-gains and higher AARC-losses with more depressive symptoms and of higher AARC-losses with more anxiety symptoms were stronger in those with higher rumination. Individuals with both current and past depression reported highest AARC-losses and lowest AARC-gains. Those with current, but not past anxiety, reported highest AARC-losses. Perceiving many age-related losses may place individuals at risk of depressive and anxiety symptoms, especially those who frequently ruminate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over recent years, there has been an increase in the number of reported cases of food fraud incidents, whereas at the same time, consumers demand authentic products of high quality. The emerging volatilomics technology could be the key to the analysis and characterization of the quality of different foodstuffs. This field of omics has aroused the interest of scientists due to its noninvasive, rapid, and cost-profitable nature. This review aims to monitor the available scientific information on the use of volatilomics technology, correlate it to the relevant food categories, and demonstrate its importance in the food adulteration, authenticity, and origin areas. A comprehensive literature search was performed using various scientific search engines and "volatilomics," "volatiles," "food authenticity," "adulteration," "origin," "fingerprint," "chemometrics," and variations thereof as keywords, without chronological restriction. One hundred thirty-seven relevant publications were retrieved, covering 11 different food categories (meat and meat products, fruits and fruit products, honey, coffee, tea, herbal products, olive oil, dairy products, spices, cereals, and others), the majority of which focused on the food geographical origin. The findings show that volatilomics typically involves various methods responsible for the extraction and consequential identification of volatile compounds, whereas, with the aid of data analysis, it can handle large amounts of data, enabling the origin classification of samples or even the detection of adulteration practices. A Gram-stain-positive, non-pigmented, coccus-shaped, facultatively anaerobic and α-hemolytic bacterium designated as INB8 T was isolated from a hypersaline marine water sample collected at the Inland Sea of Qatar. The isolate was able to grow at 25-40 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 5-11 and with 2-8% NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain INB8 T was placed within the family Aerococcaceae with the highest sequence similarity to Facklamia tabacinasalis CCUG 30090 T (99.5%), followed by Facklamia hominis CCUG 36813 T (93.9%), Facklamia sourekii Y17312 T (93.8%), Facklamia ignava CCUG 37419 T (93.6%), Facklamia miroungae CCUG 42728 T (93.5%), Suicoccus acidiformans ZY16052 T (93.5%), Facklamia languida CCUG 37842 T (93.2%), Ignavigranum ruoffiae (93.1%), and Dolosicoccus paucivorans DSM 15742 T (90.8%). Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain INB8 T and F. tabacinasalis CCUG 30090 T were determined to be 94.5% and 58.9% respectively, confirming strain INB8 T represents a novel species. The major fatty acids were C 14:0, C 16:0, C 18:0 and C 18:1 ω9c . The G + C content of strain INB8 T determined from the genome was 36.3 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic information, it is proposed that Facklamia tabacinasalis should be reclassified as Ruoffia tabacinasalis, Facklamia ignava be reclassified as Falseniella ignava, and Facklamia sourekii be reclassified Hutsoniella sourekii. It is further proposed that strain INB8 T should be classified as a species of the genus Ruoffia for which the name Ruoffia halotolerans sp. nov. is proposed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of visual condition (low light, full light, and full light with mirror) on balance control and technical form during two technical dance movements in a group of elite collegiate dance students. Dancers demonstrated higher center of pressure velocity indicating lower control while performing a static dance task (parallel relevé retiré) and a dynamic dance task (fondu relevé en croix) under low light conditions than either lighted condition. Measures of Western ballet technique (pelvic obliquity, knee extension, and ankle plantar flexion) showed no decrement under low light conditions. We study here the extreme statistics of Brownian particles escaping from a cusp funnel: the fastest Brownian particles among n follow an ensemble of optimal trajectories located near the shortest path from the source to the target. For the time of such first arrivers, we derive an asymptotic formula that differs from the mean first passage times obtained for classical narrow escape and dire strait. When particles are initially distributed at a given distance from a cusp, the time of the fastest particles depends on the cusp geometry. Therefore, when many particles diffuse around impermeable obstacles, the geometry plays a role in the time it takes to reach a target. In the context of cellular transduction with signaling molecules, having to escape from such cusp-like domains slows down signaling pathways. In recent decades, genetic advances in yield improvement in the major cereal crops, including wheat, has stagnated or proceeded at a slower rate than is required to meet future global food demand, particularly in the face of climate change. To reverse this situation, and in view of the future climate scenario, there is a need to increase the genetic diversity of wheat to increase its productivity, quality, stability, and adaptation to local agro-environments. The abundant genetic resources and literature are a basis for wheat improvement. However, many species, such as wild relatives, landraces, and old cultivars have not been studied beyond their agronomic characteristics, highlighting the lack of understanding of the physiological and metabolic processes (and their integration) associated with higher productivity and resilience in limiting environments. Retrospective studies using wheat ancestors and modern cultivars may identify novel traits that have not previously been considered, or have been underestimated, during domestication and breeding, but that may contribute to future food security. This review describes existing wheat genetic diversity and changes that occurred during domestication and breeding, and considers whether mining natural variation among wheat ancestors offers an opportunity to enhance wheat agronomic performance, spike architecture, canopy- and organ-level photosynthetic capacity, and responses to abiotic stress, as well as to develop new wheat hybrids. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is largely used in Mediterranean diet, and it is also worldwide apprised not only for its organoleptic properties but also for its healthy effects mainly attributed to the presence of several naturally occurring phenolic and polyphenolic compounds (bio‐phenols). These compounds are characterized by the presence of multiple phenolic groups in more or less complex structures. Their content is fundamental in defining the healthy qualities of EVOO and consequently the analytical methods for their characterization and quantification are of current interest. Traditionally their determination has been conducted using a colorimetric assay based on the reaction of Folin‐Ciocalteu (FC) reagent with the functional hydroxy groups of phenolic compounds. Identification and quantification of the bio‐phenols in olive oils requires certainly more performing analytical methods. Chromatographic separation is now commonly achieved by HPLC, coupled with spectrometric devices as UV, FID, and MS. This last approach constitutes an actual cutting‐edge application for bio‐phenol determination in complex matrices as olive oils, mostly on the light of the development of mass analyzers and the achievement of high resolution and accurate mass measurement in more affordable instrument configurations. After a short survey of some rugged techniques used for bio‐phenols determination, in this review have been described the most recent mass spectrometry‐based methods, adopted for the analysis of the bio‐phenols in EVOOs. In particular, the sample handling and the results of HPLC coupled with low‐ and high‐resolution MS and MS/MS analyzers, of ion mobility mass spectrometry and ambient mass spectrometry have been reported and discussed. The purpose of the current study is to explore students' reasons for participating in a campus sexual assault climate survey to determine if patterns exist based on various identities and experiences. More specifically, we were interested in the most frequently reported reasons for participating, and whether they differed by key demographic variables. As part of a campus climate survey administration at two campuses, 4,020 students responded to survey questions asking why they participated in the survey (Sample 1, n = 2,937 and Sample 2, n = 1,083). To examine which demographic variables predicted reasons for taking the survey while controlling for other potential correlates, we conducted logistic regression analyses. The reasons provided by students as to why they completed the campus climate survey differed by identity characteristics, suggesting that researchers must consider the demographic makeup of their institutions when designing sampling and recruitment plans and tailoring them to their student populations. For example, while gender emerged as salient for differing reasons for participation (e.g., women more likely to participate because of the issue's importance and wanting their opinions heard more), intersectional analysis by race and gender indicates that White men (and Asian men, in Sample 1) most consistently indicated different reasons for participation, with significantly greater odds than their White and Asian women counterparts to participate for the cash incentives. This information could help improve the recruitment of representative samples for campus sexual assault surveys and therefore provide more accurate data that can be used to deliver effective intervention and prevention efforts. The process of bacterial nomenclature change has evolved in complexity over time and continues to be an iterative process that is not without challenges. The importance and feasibility of such changes vary among basic researchers, clinical microbiologists, and clinicians. In recent years, clinically relevant changes have been made across Gram-positive and Gram-negative organism groups, as well as the mycobacteria. Updated clinical laboratory accreditation requirements state that clinical laboratories must update their reporting practices in the case of clinically relevant nomenclature changes. These updates may significantly affect various sectors of health care, including antimicrobial stewardship, laboratory protocols, and infection prevention procedures and policies. While regularly updating bacterial nomenclature aims to improve the accuracy and consistency of our microbial language, the potential impact of such changes must be considered. The records of 320 eyes without other ocular pathology undergoing pars plana lensectomy and vitrectomy by ultrasonic fragmentation for routine cataract extraction without an implant were reviewed retrospectively. Three hundred two (302/320-94.4%) had vision between 20/20-20/40. Reasons for vision less than 20/40 in 18/320 (5.6%) eyes included 5/320 (1.5%) with retinal detachments, 11/320 (3.4%) with clinically apparent cystoid maculopathy, 1/320 (0.3%) with a macular hole, and 1/320 (0.3%) with retained lens material. Comparison was made between 184 lensectomies performed by the original technique and 136 pars plana lensectomies performed by the modified technique. Vision between 20/20-20/40 was achieved by 168/184 (91.3%) of the original technique group versus 134/136 (98.5%) of the modified technique group. In the latter group, there was one retinal detachment (0.7%), one macular hole (0.7%) and no clinical cystoid maculopathy. Fluorescein angiography performed three months postoperatively in eyes having vision of 20/20-20/40 of the modified lensectomy group showed cystoid maculopathy in one eye which had undergone trauma-induced wound dehiscence.
