The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) aims to increase diversity in research and health-related careers. The SURP provides underrepresented minority (URM) and disadvantaged students with research, mentoring, and networking experiences; real-life surgical observations; and simulated cardiovascular demonstrations. A postprogram survey was developed to assess program outcomes and explore ways of improving the program to stimulate URM and disadvantaged students' interest in research and health-related careers. This is a report of those postprogram survey findings. Using a survey research design, an online survey was emailed to participants (n = 88). Data were collected for 6 weeks beginning March 2020. There were 37 multiple-choice and open-ended questions regarding education, career choices, and program experiences. Responses were downloaded to statistical software for analyses. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Major themes were identified for qualitative data. Responses were received from 44.3% (n = 39) of former SURP participants. Overall, 59% stated that the SURP influenced their career goals. When asked about mentor-mentee relationships, 69.3% responded that their interactions were excellent or good; 61.5% maintained contact with their mentor after the SURP. Finally, 79% indicated their SURP experience was excellent or good, and 84.6% would recommend the SURP to others. The SURP has been successful at providing URM and disadvantaged students with positive research experiences and long-term mentor-mentee relationships and has influenced educational and/or career goals. Programs that expose URM and disadvantaged students to basic, clinical, and/or translational research are beneficial for stimulating interest in research and health-related careers.

Obesity is characterized by adipose tissue expansion as well as macrophage infiltration of adipose tissue. This results in an increase in circulating inflammatory cytokines and nonesterified fatty acids, factors that cause skeletal muscle insulin resistance. Whether obesity also results in skeletal muscle inflammation is not known. In this study, we quantified macrophages immunohistochemically in vastus lateralis biopsies from eight obese and eight lean subjects. Our study demonstrates that macrophages infiltrate skeletal muscle in obesity, and we developed an in vitro system to study this mechanistically. Myoblasts were isolated from vastus lateralis biopsies and differentiated in culture. Coculture of differentiated human myotubes with macrophages in the presence of palmitic acid, to mimic an obese environment, revealed that macrophages in the presence of palmitic acid synergistically augment cytokine and chemokine expression in myotubes, decrease I[kappa]B-[alpha] protein expression, increase phosphorylated JNK, decrease phosphorylated Akt, and increase markers of muscle atrophy. These results suggest that macrophages alter the inflammatory state of muscle cells in an obese milieu, inhibiting insulin signaling. The purpose of this study was to identify performance measures of racially underrepresented minority (RUM) Ph.D. trainees who needed additional training initiatives to assist with completing the UAMS biomedical science degree. A sample of 37 trainees in the 10-year NIH-NIGMS funded Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) were examined. Descriptive statistics and correlations examined process measures (GRE scores, GPAs, etc.) and outcome measures (time-to-degree, publications, post-doctoral fellowship, etc.) While differences were found, there were no statistically significant differences between how these two groups (Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominately White Institutions (PWIs)) of students performed over time as Ph.D. students. Graduates who scored lower on the verbal section of the GRE also had a higher final graduate school grade point average in graduates who received their undergraduate training from HBCUs. Of the graduates who received their undergraduate training from PWIs, graduates who scored lower on the quantitative section of the GRE had higher numbers of publications. These findings stimulate the need to 1) reduce reliance on the use of the GRE in admission committee decisions, 2) identify psychometrically valid indicators that tailored to assess outcome variables that are relevant to the careers of biomedical scientists, and 3) ensure the effective use of the tools in making admission decisions. Background: This study investigated the regulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ), the histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3)-nuclear receptor coreceptor (NCoR) complex (a corepressor of transcription used by PPARγ), and small ubiquitin-like modifier-1 (SUMO-1) (a posttranslational modifier of PPARγ) in human adipose tissue and both adipocyte and macrophage cell lines. The objective was to determine whether there were alterations in the human adipose tissue gene expression levels of PPARγ, HDAC3, NCoR, and SUMO-1 associated either with obesity or with treatment of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) subjects with insulin-sensitizing medications. Methods: We obtained subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies from 86 subjects with a wide range of body mass index (BMI) and insulin sensitivity (SI). Additionally, adipose tissue biopsies were obtained from a randomized subgroup of IGT subjects before and after 10 weeks of treatment with either pioglitazone or metformin. Results: The adipose mRNA levels of PPARγ, NCoR, HDAC3, and SUMO-1 correlated strongly with each other ( P<0.0001); however, SUMO-1, NCoR, and HDAC3 gene expression were not significantly associated with BMI or SI. Pioglitazone increased SUMO-1 expression by 23% ( P<0.002) in adipose tissue and an adipocyte cell line ( P<0.05), but not in macrophages. Small interfering RNA (siRNA)-mediated knockdown of SUMO-1 decreased PPARγ, HDAC3, and NCoR in THP-1 cells and increased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) induction in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Conclusions: These results suggest that the coordinate regulation of SUMO-1, PPARγ1/2, HDAC3, and NCoR may be more tightly controlled in macrophages than in adipocytes in human adipose and that these modulators of PPARγ activity may be particularly important in the negative regulation of macrophage-mediated adipose inflammation by pioglitazone. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of adipocytes plays a major role in the assembly and secretion of adipokines. The levels of serum adiponectin, secreted by adipocytes, are decreased in insulin resistance, diabetes, and obesity. The role of ER stress in downregulating adiponectin levels has been demonstrated in mouse models of obesity. Studies examining human adipose tissue have indicated that there is an increase in the ER stress transcript HSPA5 with increased body mass index (BMI). However, it is not established whether ER stress results in changes in adiponectin levels or multimerization in human adipocytes. We examined whether the induction of ER stress using tunicamycin, thapsigargin, or palmitate alters the messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expression of adiponectin and the mRNA expression of chaperones ERP44 and ERO1 in adult-derived human adipocyte stem (ADHAS) cells. ER stress was measured using key indicators of ER stress-HSPA5, ERN1, CHOP, and GADD34, as well as changes in eIF2α phosphorylation. Because ER stress is suggested to be the proximal cause of inflammation in adipocytes, we further examined the change in inflammatory status by quantitating the change in Iκβ-α protein following the induction of ER stress. Our studies indicate that: (1) ER stress markers were increased to a higher degree using tunicamycin or thapsigargin compared to palmitate; (2) ER stress significantly decreased adiponectin mRNA in response to tunicamycin and thapsigargin, but palmitate did not decrease adiponectin mRNA levels. In all three instances, the induction of ER stress was accompanied by a decrease in adiponectin protein as well as adiponectin multimerization. All three inducers of ER stress increased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) mRNA and decreased Iκβ-α protein in adipocytes. Lipin-alpha and -beta are the alternatively spliced gene products of the Lpin1 gene, whose product lipin is required for adipocyte differentiation. Lipin deficiency causes lipodystrophy, fatty liver, and insulin resistance in mice, whereas adipose tissue lipin overexpression results in increased adiposity but improved insulin sensitivity. To assess lipin expression and its relation to insulin resistance in humans, we examined lipin-alpha and -beta mRNA levels in subjects with normal or impaired glucose tolerance. We found higher expression levels of both lipin isoforms in lean, insulin-sensitive subjects. When compared with normal glucose-tolerant subjects, individuals with impaired glucose tolerance were more insulin resistant, demonstrated higher levels of intramyocellular lipids (IMCLs), and expressed approximately 50% lower levels of lipin-alpha and -beta. In addition, there was a strong inverse correlation between adipose tissue lipin expression and muscle IMCLs but no evidence for an increase in muscle lipid oxidation. After treatment of the impaired glucose-tolerant subjects with insulin sensitizers for 10 weeks, pioglitazone (but not metformin) resulted in a 60% increase in the insulin sensitivity index (Si) and a 32% decrease in IMCLs (both P < 0.01), along with an increase in lipin-beta (but not lipin-alpha) expression by 200% (P < 0.005). Lipin expression in skeletal muscle, however, was not related to obesity or insulin resistance. Hence, high adipose tissue lipin expression is found in insulin-sensitive subjects, and lipin-beta expression increases following treatment with pioglitazone. These results suggest that increased adipogenesis and/or lipogenesis in subcutaneous fat, mediated by the LPIN1 gene, may prevent lipotoxicity in muscle, leading to improved insulin sensitivity. PPARγplays a major role in cell differentiation, lipid metabolism and apoptosis and is the target of thiazolidinediones which are widely used to improve insulin sensitivity and for treatment of diabetes mellitus. Recently a SUMOylation (small ubiquitin-like modifier) site was identified on PPARγsuggesting that it might be a target for modification by SUMO-1. SUMOylation, a process similar to ubiquitination, regulates many cellular processes including nuclear transport, transcription, apuptosis and protein stability. SUMOylation of PPARγhas been proposed to play a role in the transrepression of inflammatory genes. We hypothesized that pioglitazone (pin) would increase the amount of PPARγmodified by SUMO-1, and that this could be part of the anti-inflammatory effect of TZDs. To evaluate SUMOylation we examined human adipose tissue mRNA levels for SUMO-1 in 18 impaired glucose tolerant subjects in response to two insulin-sensitizing drugs (pin and metfromin). We found that pin treatment increased expression of SUMO-1 by 23% (p<0.002). When added to adipocytes in vitro, pin also increased SUMO-1 suggesting a direct effect of TZDs on adipocytes. Next, we examined the expression of SUMO-1 and NCOR (nuclear receptor corepressor protein) in adipose tissue from 86 subjects (54 NGT and 32 IGT) covering a broad range of BMI and S[sub 1]. SUMO-1 and NCOR correlated strongly with each other (r=0.8, p<0.001) suggesting that they are tightly associated in a large complex as described previously in cultured macrophages where SUMOylation of PPARγ promotes interaction with the NCOR-histone deacetylase3 complex and represses target genes. Although SUMO-1 and NCOR were not significantly associated with BMI or S[sub 1] in this group, they were highly associated with inflammatory markers. Adipose CD68 and MCP1 mRNA levels correlated strongly with SUMO-1 and NCOR (r=0.5 and 0.6, p<0.001 respectively). Overall these results show that SUMOylation of PPARγcan be regulated by pin treatment and suggest that the anti-inflammatory effects of pio may be controlled by the degree of SUMO-1 modification of PPARγ. Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) was overexpressed in adipose tissue of Glut4 KO mice, and elevated RBP4 has been associated with insulin resistance in mouse and human studies. To determine the relationship between RBP4 and obesity, insulin resistance, and other markers of insulin resistance in humans, RBP4 gene expression measured by real-time RT-PCR and blood levels measured by ELISA and Western blotting were studied in adipose tissue and muscle of 85 non-diabetic humans over a wide range of BMI (19-55 Kg/m²) and S[sub I] (1.02-26.77 x 10[sup -5] x min[sup -1]/pM), and RBP4 expression was also measured from visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) from 16 surgical patients. RBP4 expression was 3-fold higher in SAT vs VAT (p<0.005), and RBP4 was 7-fold higher in the adipocyte (vs stromal) fraction, and undetectable in preadipocytes. Neither SAT RBP4 expression nor blood RBP4 level showed a significant relationship with BMI or S[sub I]. However, there was a strong positive correlation between RBP4 mRNA and the inflammation markers MCP1 (r=0.42, p<0.0001) and CD68 (r=0.46, p<0.0001)). Adipose GLUT4 mRNA was also highly associated with RBP4 (r=0.53, p<0.0001). These relationships remained significant after adjustment for BMI and St. Impaired glucose tolerant subjects were treated with pioglitazone, resulting in an increase in S[sub 1] along with a 60% increase in RBP4 expression, but no change in plasma RBP4. The in vitro treatment of cultured adipocytes with pioglitazone yielded a similar increase in RBP4 mRNA. Hence, RBP4 expression in humans was not significantly associated with obesity or insulin resistance, and actually increased with TZD treatment. Adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) has been identified as an important mediator of adipocyte lipolysis and energy homeostasis. ATGL deficient mice had increased adipose mass and triglyceride accumulation in cardiac muscle. We studied the expression of ATGL in human fat and muscle, and examined correlations with muscle lipid oxidation. ATGL was expressed in mature adipocytes at a level 10-fold higher than that in the adipose tissue stromal fraction or muscle. We measured ATGL mRNA levels in adipose tissue and muscle of 86 nondiabetic subjects covering a wide range of BMI (19-55 Kg/m²) and S[sub 1] (1.0226.77 x 10[sup -5] x min[sup -1]/pM), with either normal glucose tolerance (NGT) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). ATGL expression in adipose tissue or muscle showed no correlation with either BMI or St. In muscle, ATGL mRNA associated strongly with genes involved with lipid oxidation, including CPT1 mRNA (r=0.82, p<0.0001), AdipoR1 mRNA (r=0.71, p<0.0001), and AdipoR2 mRNA (r=0.74, p<0.0001), however there was no association with intramyocellular lipid. Thirty two IGT subjects were randomized to receive either pioglitazone (PIO) or metformin (MET) for 10 weeks, and we examined the effects of these drugs on ATGL expression. PIO, but not MET, resulted in a 31% increase of adipose ATGL expression (p<0.03), with no change in muscle. ATGL in muscle is associated with lipid oxidation. These data tend to support rodent studies which suggest that muscle ATGL may be involved with the release of FFA from lipid storage for oxidation. However, adipose ATGL expression was not associated with obesity or insulin resistance, and was increased following PIO treatment, suggesting an important role in the balance of adipose lipid metabolism. We present a new class of direct detection signals; absorption of fermionic dark matter. We enumerate the operators through dimension six which lead to fermionic absorption, study their direct detection prospects, and summarize additional constraints on their suppression scale. Such dark matter is inherently unstable as there is no symmetry which prevents dark matter decays. Nevertheless, we show that fermionic dark matter absorption can be observed in direct detection and neutrino experiments while ensuring consistency with the observed dark matter abundance and required lifetime. For dark matter masses well below the GeV scale, dedicated searches for these signals at current and future experiments can probe orders of magnitude of unexplored parameter space. Abstract: Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) expression in human adipose positively correlates with body mass index and may contribute to adipose dysfunction by activating transforming growth factor-β and/or inhibiting angiogenesis. Our objective was to determine how TSP-1 is regulated in adipocytes and polarized macrophages using a coculture system and to determine whether fatty acids, including the ω-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), regulate TSP-1 expression. Coculture of M1, M2a or M2c macrophages with adipocytes induced TSP-1 gene expression in adipocytes (from 2.4- to 4.2-fold, P<.05), and adipocyte coculture induced TSP-1 gene expression in M1 and M2c macrophages (M1: 8.6-fold, M2c: 26-fold; P<.05). TSP-1 protein levels in the shared media of adipocytes and M2c cells were also strongly induced by coculture (>10-fold, P<.05). DHA treatment during the coculture of adipocytes and M2c macrophages potently inhibited the M2c macrophage TSP-1 mRNA level (97% inhibition, P<.05). Adipocyte coculture induced interleukin (IL)-10 expression in M2c macrophages (10.1-fold, P<.05), and this increase in IL-10 mRNA expression was almost completely blocked with DHA treatment (96% inhibition, P<.05); thus, IL-10 expression closely paralleled TSP-1 expression. Since IL-10 has been shown to regulate TSP-1 in other cell types, we reduced IL-10 expression with siRNA in the M2c cells and found that this caused TSP-1 to be reduced in response to adipocyte coculture by 60% (P<.05), suggesting that IL-10 regulates TSP-1 expression in M2c macrophages. These results suggest that supplementation with dietary ω-3 fatty acids could potentially be beneficial to adipose tissue in obesity by reducing TSP-1 and fibrosis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Within the first 24h of hormonally stimulated adipocyte differentiation, murine 3T3-L1 preadipocytes undergo a mitotic expansion phase prior to terminal differentiation. During this time, the cell cycle regulatory proteins, p130 and p107 undergo dramatic differential expression and the transient increase in expression of p107 appears to be required for terminal differentiation. Recently, human adipose-derived human stem cells (hASC) of mesenchymal origin have been used as a model of human adipocyte differentiation and we sought to determine if differentiating hASC undergo clonal expansion and if the regulated expression of p130/p107 was similar to that observed during 3T3-L1 adipogenesis. Results indicate that differentiating hASC, unlike 3T3-L1 cells do not undergo clonal expansion and p130 expression gradually diminishes across differentiation. However, p107 expression is transiently increased during hASC differentiation in a manner analogous to 3T3-L1 cells suggesting a similar role for p107 in terminal differentiation in human adipocytes. Introduction: Diversity can enhance the agenda and quality of biomedical research, but a dearth of underrepresented minorities and women serve as biomedical researchers. We estimate the maximum direct detection cross section for sub-GeV dark matter (DM) scattering off nucleons. For DM masses in the range 10 keV-100 MeV, cross sections greater than 10^{-36}-10^{-30}  cm^{2} seem implausible. We present a DM candidate which realizes this maximum cross section: highly interactive particle relics (HYPERs). After HYPERs freeze-in, a dark sector phase transition decreases the mediator's mass. This increases the HYPER's direct detection cross section without impacting its abundance or measurements of big bang nucleosynthesis and the cosmic microwave background.

We present new models utilizing QCD-like dark sectors to resolve small-scale structure problems. These models of resonant self-interacting dark matter in a dark sector with QCD are based on analogies to the meson spectra in standard model QCD. We introduce a simple model that realizes resonant self-interaction (analogous to the ϕ-K-K system) and thermal freeze-out, in which dark mesons are made of two light quarks. We also consider asymmetric dark matter composed of heavy and light dark quarks to realize a resonant self-interaction (analogous to the ϒ(4S)-B-B system) and discuss the experimental probes of both setups. Finally, we comment on the possible resonant self-interactions already built into SIMP and ELDER mechanisms while using lattice results to determine feasibility.

Objective: Scavenger receptors play crucial roles in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, but their role in insulin resistance has not been explored. We hypothesized that scavenger receptors are present in human adipose tissue resident macrophages, and their gene expression is regulated by adiponectin and thaizolidinediones., Methods and Results: The gene expression of scavenger receptors including scavenger receptor-A (SRA), CD36, and lectin-like oxidized LDL receptor-1 (LOX-1) were studied in subcutaneous adipose tissue of nondiabetic subjects and in vitro. Adipose tissue SRA expression was independently associated with insulin resistance. Pioglitazone downregulated SRA gene expression in adipose tissue of subjects with impaired glucose tolerance and decreased LOX-1 mRNA in vitro. Macrophage LOX-1 expression was decreased when macrophages were cocultured with adipocytes or when exposed to adipocyte conditioned medium. Adding adiponectin neutralizing antibody resulted in a 2-fold increase in LOX-1 gene expression demonstrating that adiponectin regulates LOX-1 expression., Conclusions: Adipose tissue scavenger receptors are strongly associated with insulin resistance. Pioglitazone and adiponectin regulate gene expression of SRA and LOX-1, and this may have clinical implications in arresting the untoward sequalae of insulin resistance and diabetes, including accelerated atherosclerosis.

Context and Objective: Stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase (SCD1) is the rate-limiting enzyme that converts palmitoyl- and stearoyl-coenzyme A to palmitoleoyl- and oleoyl-cownzyme A, respectively. SCD-deficient mice are protected from obesity, and the ob/ob mouse has high levels of SCD. This study was designed to better characterize SCD1 gene and protein expression in humans with varying insulin sensitivity., Design, Participants, and Setting: In a university hospital clinical research center setting, SCD1 gene expression was measured in sc adipose and vastus lateralis muscle of 86 nondiabetic subjects; 10 wk of pioglitazone (45 mg daily) and metformin (1000 mg twice daily) treatment were assessed in 36 impaired glucose-tolerant subjects. Adipocytes were treated with pioglitazone, and SCD1 expression was attenuated with small interfering RNA (siRNA) to examine other adipocyte genes., Results: There was no significant relationship between adipose or muscle SCD1 mRNA and either body mass index or insulin sensitivity. After pioglitazone (but not metformin) treatment, there was a 2-fold increase in SCD1 mRNA and protein in adipose tissue. Pioglitazone also increased SCD1 in vitro. There were significant positive correlations between SCD1 and peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) as well as other PPARgamma-responsive genes, including lipin-beta, AGPAT2, RBP4, adiponectin receptors, CD68, and MCP1. When SCD1 expression was inhibited with a siRNA, lipin-beta, AGPAT2, and the adiponectin R2 receptor expression were decreased, and adipocyte MCP-1 was increased., Conclusions: SCD1 is closely linked to PPARgamma expression in humans, and is increased by PPARgamma agonists. The change in expression of some downstream PPARgamma targets after SCD1 knockdown suggests that PPARgamma up-regulation of SCD1 leads to increased lipogenesis and potentiation of adiponectin signaling.

Metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus are associated with an increased number of macrophage cells that infiltrate white adipose tissue (WAT). Previously, we demonstrated that the treatment of subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) with the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) agonist pioglitazone resulted in a decrease in macrophage number in adipose tissue. Here, adipose tissue samples from IGT subjects treated with pioglitazone were examined for apoptosis with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining. TUNEL-positive cells were identified, and there was a significant 42% increase in TUNEL-positive cells following pioglitazone treatment. Overlay experiments with anti-CD68 antibody demonstrated that most of the TUNEL-positive cells were macrophages. To determine whether macrophage apoptosis was a direct or indirect effect of pioglitazone treatment, human THP1 cells were treated with pioglitazone in vitro, demonstrating increased TUNEL staining in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Furthermore, the appearance of the active proteolytic subunits of caspase-3 and caspase-9 were detected in cell lysate from THP1 cells and also increased in a dose- and time-dependent manner following pioglitazone treatment. Pretreatment with a PPARgamma inhibitor, GW9662, prevented pioglitazone induction of the apoptotic pathway in THP1 cells. Differentiated human adipocytes did not show any significant increase in apoptosis after treatment in vitro with piolgitazone. These findings indicate that PPARgamma has distinct functions in different cell types in WAT, such that pioglitazone reduces macrophage infiltration by inducing apoptotic cell death specifically in macrophages through PPARgamma activation.

Immortalized cell lines offer significant logistical advantages over primary cells when used for in-vitro studies. Immortalized cells may, however, exhibit important differences relative to their primary cell counterparts. In this study, microarrays were used to make a genome-wide comparison between primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and EA.hy926, an immortalized HUVEC cell line, in their baseline properties and in their response to inhibition of the mevalonate pathway with an inhibitor of hydroxy methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (statin). HUVECs and EA.hy926 were incubated with control medium, atorvastatin, mevalonate, or a combination of atorvastatin and mevalonate for 24 h. Gene expression profiles were obtained in duplicates using Affymetrix Human Genome U133A 2.0 arrays (Santa Clara, California, USA). Probe-sets were selected according to the following criteria: a twofold or greater increase/decrease in atorvastatin-treated cells compared with untreated cells; a twofold or greater reversal of the effect of atorvastatin by combined treatment with atorvastatin and mevalonate; no significant change in gene expression in cells treated with mevalonate alone compared with untreated cells. Most genes that were expressed by untreated HUVECs, were also expressed by untreated EA.hy926 cells. EA.hy926 cells, however, constitutively expressed a large number of additional genes, many of which were related to cell cycle control and apoptosis. Atorvastatin induced differential expression (> or = twofold) of 103 genes in HUVECs (10 up, 93 down) and 466 genes in EA.hy926 cells (198 up, 268 down). Applying the above selection criteria, thrombomodulin and tissue plasminogen activator were up-regulated in both cell types, whereas, connective tissue growth factor, thrombospondin-1, and cysteine-rich angiogenic inducer 61 were down-regulated. In conclusion, EA.hy926 cells retain most of the characteristics of endothelial cells under baseline conditions as well as after treatment with atorvastatin. It is necessary, however, to carefully select and validate changes in genes that are the focus of studies when using EA.hy926 cells. While this cell line is highly useful in studies on some genes, including genes encoding molecules involved in regulating thrombohemorrhagic homeostasis, they appear to be less suited for studies focused on other genes, particularly those involved in the regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis.
