This study examined the dynamic between perceived authoritarian parenting style (PAPS), and subjective wellbeing (SWB) among purposively recruited 423 college students in China. Expectancy value beliefs (EVB), fear of failure (FOF), and competitiveness were taken as mediators. The data were analyzed using Bootstrap method of 5000 sample and 95% confidence interval. The results revealed a significant negative total effect of PAPS on SWB. Additionally, two indirect paths were found to be significant: the mediation of FOF (Path 2) and the serial mediation of FOF and competitiveness (Path 6). These findings suggest that the perception of authoritarian parenting style is a negative predictor of students' happiness, and that FOF and competitiveness played important mediating roles in this relationship. These findings have important implications for educators, parents, and policymakers who aim to promote positive academic and personal outcomes for college students. The results suggest the need for interventions that address the negative impact of PAPS on students' wellbeing, and the importance of fostering positive beliefs about the value of education and academic achievement, as well as reducing FOF and promoting healthy competition.

The rapid development of social reform and the economy has brought great challenges to the mental health of college students. However, there are few studies on the impact of these psychological problems on college students' English learning. As a special group about to enter society, studying the mental health of college students in foreign language learning is of great significance. This paper discusses the principle of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and the interactive mechanism to support college students' foreign language learning. Additionally, the adaptability supporting college students' foreign language learning is analyzed according to the current situation of AI supporting foreign language learning. Then, the mental health of college students in the AI environment is investigated and analyzed. This paper takes foreign and non-foreign language majors of Changchun University of Technology as the object and uses questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observation to obtain basic data. The results show that college students' adaptability to foreign language learning is higher than that of non-foreign. Students' intelligent operation and knowledge storage level impact their adaptability to foreign language learning. Psychological health problems include learning anxiety, loneliness, depression, and inferiority in college students' foreign language learning. These negative emotions, to a certain extent, affect the learning effect of college students' foreign language learning. This paper is of great significance to the adaptability of college students' foreign language learning to the intelligent environment and the analysis of their mental health problems. This paper hopes to provide data reference for the research on improving college students' foreign language learning effects.

Abstract Tuberculosis drug resistance contributes to the spread of tuberculosis. Immunotherapy is an effective strategy for treating tuberculosis, with the regulation of macrophage-mediated anti-tuberculosis immunity being crucial. Norcantharidin (NCTD), a drug used in tumor immunotherapy, has significant immunomodulatory effects. Thus, NCTD may have an anti-tuberculosis role by regulating immunity. Understanding how NCTD affects the proteome of Mtb-infected macrophages can provide valuable insights into potential treatments. This study aimed to investigate the impact of NCTD (10 μg/mL) on the proteome of macrophages infected with Mtb H37Ra using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) analysis. A total of 69 differentially regulated proteins (DRPs) were identified, with 28 up-regulated and 41 down-regulated in the NCTD-treated group. Validation of six DRPs (CLTCL1, VAV1, SP1, TRIM24, MYO1G, and WDR70) by Western blot analysis confirmed the accuracy of the LC–MS/MS method used in this study. NCTD modulates various protein expressions involved in chromatin-modifying enzymes, RHO GTPases activating PAKs, Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytosis, T cell receptor signaling pathway, and antigen processing and presentation. Overall, the research provides new insights into the effects of NCTD on the proteome of Mtb-infected macrophages. The identified changes highlight potential targets for future therapeutic interventions aimed at enhancing host immunity against Mtb infection or developing new anti-TB drugs based on these findings.

Many uncertainties arise during the manufacturing process, such as changes in the working environment, traffic transportation delays, machine breakdowns, and worker performance instabilities. These factors can cause job processing times and ready times to change. In this study, we address a scheduling model for a single machine where both job release dates and processing times are scenario dependent. The objective is to minimize the total completion time across the worst-case scenarios. Even without the uncertainty factor, this problem is NP-hard. To solve it, we derive several properties and a lower bound used in a branch-and-bound method to find an optimal solution. We propose nine heuristics based on a linear combination of scenario-dependent processing times and release times for approximate solutions. Additionally, we offer an iterated greedy population-based algorithm that efficiently solves this problem by taking advantage of the diversity of solutions. We evaluate the performance of the proposed nine heuristics and the iterated greedy population-based algorithm.

Recent autonomous driving systems heavily rely on 3D point cloud data collected from multiple sensors for environmental awareness and decision-making. However, it is unrealistic to expect the autonomous driving system to recognize all road environments and handle every traffic situation. Models for autonomous driving need to be updated in real time in order for the system to adapt to more situations. This is where online continual learning becomes crucial. Online continual learning is an important method in the field of autonomous driving, as it enables models to update their parameters with streaming input data for adapting to new environments and conditions. Online continual learning in the field of autonomous driving faces several challenges: inefficient data fusion, catastrophic forgetting, insufficient computational resources, violation of road privacy and categories imbalance. To tackle these challenges, we propose an Analytic Online Continual Learning method for 3D Point Cloud Classification (3D-AOCL). This approach utilizes Analytic Learning to update parameters and integrates a feature fusion module along with a category balancer to address the above issues. It is capable of fusing data in feature level, balancing samples across various categories and updating parameters by calculating the analytical solution. We have validated our method on the vehicle side, the infrastructure side, and vehicle-infrastructure cooperative data on the V2X-Seq dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that our model effectively addresses key issues in online continual learning for autonomous driving systems, outperforming other models by approximately 4.00% to 6.00% in AMCA scores while only keeping 0.75% trainable parameters.

Vascular calcification and vascular ageing are “silent” diseases but are highly prevalent in patients with end stage renal failure and type 2 diabetes, as well as in the ageing population. Melatonin (MT) has been shown to induce cardiovascular protection effects. However, the role of MT on vascular calcification and ageing has not been well-identified. In this study, the aortic transcriptional landscape revealed clues for MT related cell-to-cell communication between endothelial cells (ECs) and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in vascular calcification and vascular ageing. Furthermore, we elucidated that it was exosomes that participate in the information transportation from ECs to VSMCs. The exosomes secreted from melatonin-treated ECs (MT-ECs-Exos) inhibited calcification and senescence of VSMCs. Mechanistically, miR-302d-5p was highly enriched in MT-ECs-Exos, while depletion of miR-302d-5p blocked the ability of MT-ECs-Exos to suppress VSMC calcification and senescence. Notably, Wnt3 was a bona fide target of miR-302d-5p and modulated VSMC calcification and senescence. Furthermore, we found that maturation of endothelial derived exosomal miR-302d-5p was promoted by WTAP in an N6-methyladenosine (m6A)-dependent manner. Interestingly, MT alleviated vascular calcification and ageing in 5/6-nephrectomy (5/6 NTP) mice, a chronic kidney disease (CKD) induced vascular calcification and vascular ageing mouse model. MT-ECs-Exos was absorbed by VSMCs in vivo and effectively prevented vascular calcification and ageing in 5/6 NTP mice. ECs-derived miR-302d-5p mediated MT induced anti-calcification and anti-ageing effects in 5/6 NTP mice. Our study suggests that MT-ECs-Exos alleviate vascular calcification and ageing through the miR-302d-5p/Wnt3 signaling pathway, dependent on m6A methylation.

The fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) is a crucial receptor tyrosine kinase involved in essential biological processes, including growth, development, and tissue repair. However, FGFR gene mutations, including amplification, fusion, and mutation, can disrupt epigenetics, transcriptional regulation, and tumor microenvironment interactions, leading to cancer development. Targeting these kinase mutations with small molecule drugs or antibodies has shown clinical benefits. For example, erdafitinib is approved for treating locally advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer patients with FGFR2/FGFR3 mutations, and pemigatinib is approved for treating cholangiocarcinoma with FGFR2 fusion/rearrangement. Effective screening of FGFR variant patients is crucial for the clinical application of FGFR inhibitors. Various detection methods, such as polymerase chain reaction, next-generation sequencing, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemistry, are available, and their selection should be based on diagnostic and treatment decision-making needs. Our developed expert consensus aims to standardize the diagnosis and treatment process for FGFR gene mutations and facilitate the practical application of FGFR inhibitors in clinical practice.

Abstract Background Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is characterized by mitochondrial damage and increased inflammation. Circulating cell-free mitochondrial DNA (ccf-mtDNA), which originates from damaged mitochondria, is an endogenous damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMPs) molecule that may trigger inflammation and is recognized as a potential biomarker for various diseases. In this study, we investigated the potential association between plasma ccf-mtDNA content and its use as a diagnostic biomarker in patients with KOA. Methods We collected plasma samples from patients with KOA and healthy controls (HC). Subsequently, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to detect ccf-mtDNA content in the plasma samples. We used the Kellgren–Lawrence (K-L) classification criteria to classify patients with KOA into four grades: I-IV. Disease severity in patients with KOA was assessed using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Next, Spearman analysis was performed to observe the correlation between ccf-mtDNA content and the K-L classification and WOMAC score. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between ccf-mtDNA and KOA risk. Results In total, we enrolled 60 patients with KOA and HC who were matched for age, sex, and body mass index (BMI). Abstract Cold temperatures have been shown to slow skin wound healing. However, the specific mechanisms underlying cold-induced impairment of wound healing remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that small extracellular vesicles derived from cold-exposed mouse plasma (CT-sEVs) decelerate re-epithelialization, increase scar width, and weaken angiogenesis. CT-sEVs are enriched with miRNAs involved in the regulation of wound healing-related biological processes. Functional assays revealed that miR-423-3p, enriched in CT-sEVs, acts as a critical mediator in cold-induced impairment of angiogenic responses and poor wound healing by inhibiting phosphatase and poly(A) binding protein cytoplasmic 1 (PABPC1). These findings indicate that cold delays wound healing via miR-423-3p in plasma-derived sEVs through the inhibition of the ERK or AKT phosphorylation pathways. Our results enhance understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which cold exposure delays soft tissue wound healing.

Abstract Controlling and channeling light emissions from unpolarized quantum dots into specific directions with chiral polarization remains a key challenge in modern photonics. Stacked metasurface designs offer a potential compact solution for chirality and directionality engineering. However, experimental observations of directional chiral radiation from resonant metasurfaces with quantum emitters remain obscure. In this paper, we present experimental observations of unidirectional chiral emission from a twisted bi-layer metasurface via multi-dimensional control, including twist angle, interlayer distance, and lateral displacement between the top and bottom layers, as enabled by doublet alignment lithography (DAL). First, maintaining alignment, the metasurface demonstrates a resonant intrinsic optical chirality with near-unity circular dichroism of 0.94 and reflectance difference of 74%, where a high circular dichroism greater than 0.9 persists across a wide range of angles from −11 to 11 degrees. Second, engineered lateral displacement induces a unidirectional chiral resonance, resulting in unidirectional chiral emission from the quantum dots deposited onto the metasurface. Our bi-layer metasurfaces offer a universal compact platform for efficient radiation manipulation over a wide angular range, promising potential applications in miniaturized lasers, grating couplers, and chiral nanoantennas.

The correlation of prior austenite grain (PAG) size, mechanical properties, and the variant selection in martensite transformation of a 2 GPa grade automobile steel has been systematically investigated by using a combination of scaning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and uniaxial tesile tests. As the austenitizing temperature decreases from 970 °C to 870 °C, the as-quenched microstructure of the studied steel is fully lath martensite. Meanwhile, the average size of PAG is refined from 7.2 ± 3.9 μm to 2.1 ± 1.2 μm, and the volume fraction of high angle grain boundaries (HAGB) is increased from 59.8% to 72.3%, accompanied with an increased number fraction of grains belonging to closely spaced planes (CP) group. With the refinement of the PAGs, the martensitic variant selectivity becomes strong, and the Bain group variant selection discretely transites to the CP group, resulting in a dominate CP group. Consequently, a tensile strength of 2014 ± 33 MPa, a tensile elongtation of 12.9 ± 0.5% and a maximum strength × ductility production of 26.0 ± 1.4 GPa·%, are obtained when the austenitization temperature is at 920 °C.

Ecological aquaculture represents an important approach for maintaining sustainable economic income. Unreasonable aquaculture may result in resource wastage and population extinction. Human activities and behaviors such as predation among populations make the ecosystem very complex. Thus, seeking an appropriate intervention strategy is a favorable measure to overcome this situation. In this paper, we present a novel ecological aquaculture management model with stage-structure and impulsive nonlinear releasing larval predators. The sufficient conditions for the prey and the predators coexistence as well as global stability of a prey-vanishing periodic solution were obtained using the Floquet theorem and other analytic tactics. Subsequently, we verified our findings using mathematical software. We also found a system with a nonlinear impulse exhibiting rich dynamical properties by drawing bifurcation parameter graphs. These findings provide a firm theoretical basis for managing ecological aquaculture.

Abstract Introduction Arterial calcification, an independent predictor of cardiovascular events, increases morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), but its mechanisms remain unclear. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play an important role in intercellular communication. The study investigates the role and potential mechanisms of EVs derived from endothelial cells (ECs) in regulating vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) calcification under high glucose (HG) condition, with a goal of developing effective prevention and treatment strategies for diabetic arterial calcification. Results The results showed that EVs derived from HG induced ECs (ECHG-EVs) exhibited a bilayer structure morphology with a mean diameter of 74.08 ± 31.78 nm, expressing EVs markers including CD9, CD63 and TSG101, but not express calnexin. ECHG-EVs was internalized by VSMCs and induced VSMC calcification by increasing Runx2 expression and mineralized nodule formation. The circ_0008362 was enriched in ECHG-EVs, and it can be transmitted to VSMCs to promote VSMC calcification both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, miR-1251-5p might be one of the targets of circ_0008362 and they were co-localization in the cytoplasm of VSMCs. Runx2 was identified as the downstream target of miR-1251-5p, and circ_0008362 acted as a sponge, enhancing Runx2 expression and then promoted VSMC calcification. Besides, circ_0008362 could directly interact with Runx2 to aggravate VSMC calcification. Notably, DiR-labelled ECHG-EVs was detected in the vessels of mice. Meanwhile, the level of circ_0008362 and Runx2 were increased significantly, while the expression of miR-1251-5p was decreased significantly in calcified artery tissues of mice. However, inhibiting the release of EVs by GW4869 attenuated arterial calcification in diabetic mice. Finally, the level of circulation of plasma EVs circ_0008362 was significantly higher in patients with DM compared with normal controls. Elevated levels of plasma EVs circ_0008362 were associated with more severe coronary and aorta artery calcification in patients with DM. Conclusions Our findings suggested that circ_0008362 was enriched in EVs derived from ECs and promoted VSMC calcification under HG conditions, both by sponging miR-1251-5p to upregulate Runx2 expression and through direct interaction with Runx2. Furthermore, elevated levels of plasma EVs circ_0008362 were associated with more severe coronary and aorta artery calcification in patients with DM. These results may serve as a potential prevention and therapeutic target for diabetic arterial calcification. Graphical abstract

Abstract Background Although beta blockers, such as metoprolol, have been widely used in the management of vasovagal syncope (VVS), their efficacy remains debated, with larger studies showing limited benefit. Identifying patient-specific characteristics that predict a positive response to metoprolol could optimize its use. This study aims to investigate the key factors that may determine which VVS patients are suitable candidates for metoprolol treatment. Methods This retrospective study was conducted at a single center. Patients diagnosed with VVS and treated with metoprolol for a minimum of three months were included. A 50% reduction in syncope symptom score (SS) after three months of metoprolol treatment was used to define metoprolol responders, while those who did not achieve this reduction were classified as non-responders. After a three-month follow-up, patients were divided into two groups: responders and non-responders. Baseline data—including age, gender, comorbidities, laboratory tests, and the type of VVS—were analyzed for each patient. Changes in heart rate (HR) and blood pressure during the head-up tilt test (HUTT) were also evaluated between the two groups. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify potential predictors of metoprolol response, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to assess the value of these predictors in selecting potential responders. Results A total of 168 VVS patients were enrolled between January 2016 and December 2020. Of these, 100 patients responded positively to metoprolol, while 68 did not. No significant differences in baseline characteristics or HUTT results were observed between the two groups (p > 0.05). Abstract Background Lung cancer is one of the most frequent cancers and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide with poor prognosis. A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 4 (ADAMTS4) is crucial in the regulation of the extracellular matrix (ECM), impacting its formation, homeostasis and remodeling, and has been linked to cancer progression. However, the specific involvement of ADAMTS4 in the development of lung cancer remains unclear. Methods ADAMTS4 expression was identified in human lung cancer samples by immunohistochemical (IHC) staining and the correlation of ADAMTS4 with clinical outcome was determined. The functional impact of ADAMTS4 on malignant phenotypes of lung cancer cells was explored both in vitro and in vivo. The mechanisms underlying ADAMTS4-mediated lung cancer progression were explored by ubiquitination-related assays. Results Our study revealed a significant upregulation of ADAMTS4 at the protein level in lung cancer tissues compared to para-carcinoma normal tissues. High ADAMTS4 expression inversely correlated with the prognosis of lung cancer patients. Knockdown of ADAMTS4 inhibited the proliferation and migration of lung cancer cells, as well as the tubule formation of HUVECs, while ADAMTS4 overexpression exerted opposite effects. Mechanistically, we found that ADAMTS4 stabilized c-Myc by inhibiting its ubiquitination, thereby promoting the in vitro and in vivo growth of lung cancer cells and inducing HUVECs tubule formation in lung cancer. In addition, our results suggested that ADAMTS4 overexpression activated MAPK signaling pathway. Conclusions We highlighted the promoting role of ADAMTS4 in lung cancer progression and proposed ADAMTS4 as a promising therapeutic target for lung cancer patients.

Abstract Background The metabolism of gut microbiota produces bioactive metabolites that modulate host physiology and promote self-growth. Erysipelotrichaceae is one of the most common anaerobic microorganism families in the gut, which has been discovered to play a vital role in host metabolic disorders and inflammatory diseases. Our previous study found that N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) in caecal content of pigs significantly affected the abundance of Erysipelotrichaceae strains. However, it remains unknown how GalNAc feeding in vitro culture affects the expression levels of genes in the GalNAc metabolic pathway and the concentrations of intermediate metabolites in the Erysipelotrichaceae strain. Whether GalNAc feeding should influence the metabolism of other nutrients, such as amino acids, remains unrevealed. Results In this study, whole-genome sequence, transcriptome, and metabolome data were analyzed to assess the utilization of a Erysipelotrichaceae strain on GalNAc. The results showed the presence of a complete GalNAc catabolism pathway in the genome of this Erysipelotrichaceae strain. GalNAc feeding to this Erysipelotrichaceae strain significantly changed the expression levels of genes involved in glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Meanwhile, the concentrations of lactate, pyruvate, citrate, succinate and malate from the glycolysis and TCA cycle were significantly increased. In addition, transcriptome analysis indicated that the genes involved in the metabolism of amino acids were affected by GalNAc, including lysA (a gene involved in lysine biosynthesis) that was significantly down-regulated. The intracellular concentrations of 14 amino acids in the Erysipelotrichaceae strain were significantly increased after feeding GalNAc. Conclusions Our findings comfirmed and extended our previous works that demonstrated the utilization of GalNAc by Erysipelotrichaceae strain, and explained the possible mechanism of GalNAc affecting the abundance of Erysipelotrichaceae strain in vitro.

Abstract Satellite altimetry is the main tool for constructing global or regional marine gravity fields. To improve the accuracy and spatial resolution, it is necessary to fuse multi-mission altimeters. How to determine the weights of multi-mission altimeters is a crucial issue, making the conventional calculation process very complex. In addition, traditional satellite inversion methods are often independent of shipborne gravity, which is used only as validation data, thus not take full advantages of high accuracy and resolution of shipborne gravity. In this study, we introduce a convolutional neural network (CNN) to merge the vertical deflections (DOVs) obtained from multi-altimeter missions to construct a marine gravity model in the South China Sea. High-accuracy shipborne gravity and a dataset comprising DOVs and geo-locations are employed as input data for neural network training. For the validation of CNN method, the gravity model is also computed by conventional Inverse Vening Meinesz (IVM) method. Independent shipborne gravity measurements and SIO V32.1, DTU17 models are used as validation data. The evaluation results show that the CNN-derived model achieves a higher level of accuracy, yielding a standard deviation (STD) of 3.21 mGal, with an improvement of 36.56% compared to IVM-derived model. More than 92% of the differences between the CNN-derived model and shipborne gravity are less than 5 mGal. In addition, spectral analysis results further show that the CNN-derived model has stronger energy at short wavelengths (less than 25 km) compared to other models. These findings reveal that CNN method is feasible for marine gravity recovery and the CNN-derived model can achieve higher accuracy. The CNN method can improve the accuracy and spectral characteristics of the constructed gravity model by taking advantage of the high accuracy and high resolution of shipborne gravity. Abstract The antibody response to vaccination and infection is a key component of the immune response to pathogens. Sequencing of peripheral B cells may not represent the complete B cell receptor repertoire. Here we present a method for sequencing human plasma-derived polyclonal IgG using a combination of mass spectrometry and B-cell sequencing. We investigate the IgG response to the Moderna Spikevax COVID-19 vaccine. From the sequencing data of the natural polyclonal response to vaccination, we generate 12 recombinant antibodies. Six derived recombinant antibodies, including four generated with de novo protein sequencing, exhibit similar or higher binding affinities than the original natural polyclonal antibody. Neutralization tests reveal that the six antibodies possess neutralizing capabilities against the target antigen. This research provides insights into sequencing polyclonal IgG antibodies and the potential of our approach in generating recombinant antibodies with robust binding affinity and neutralization capabilities. Directly examining the circulating IgG pool is crucial due to potential misrepresentations by B-cell analysis alone.

The developing brain is significantly affected by long-term exposure to noise at an early age, leading to functional disorders such as learning and memory impairments. Gastrodin (GAS), a natural organic compound, is an extraction of phenolic glycoside from the rhizome of Gastrodia elata. Clinically, GAS is extensively utilised for the treatment of neurological disorders. This study aimed to explore the effect and mechanism of GAS on noise exposure-induced learning and memory impairments. Rats aged 21 days were exposed to a 90 dB noise environment for 4 weeks and divided into the noise group, the noise + GAS group, and the control group to establish a noise exposure model. After noise exposure treatment, the improvement effect of GAS on the memory of rats was evaluated by Y-maze and Morris water maze. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was utilised to determine the effect of GAS on neurotransmitter levels in the hippocampal tissue of noise-exposed rats. Western blot was applied for the detection of the protein levels of neurotrophic factors. The GAS treatment significantly improved spatial memory and increased the levels of key neurotransmitters (norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin) and neurotrophic factors (neurotrophin-3 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor) in the hippocampal tissues of noise-exposed rats. These alterations correlate with enhanced cognitive functions, suggesting a neuroprotective effect of GAS against noise-induced cognitive impairments. This study supports the potential of GAS to treat noise-induced learning and memory impairments by modulating neurotransmitter secretion and enhancing the expression levels of neurotrophic factors. These findings offer potential therapeutic avenues for cognitive impairments induced by noise exposure.

This paper examines India’s intentions and actions in integrating regional infrastructure. It also explores the prospects and impacts in the context of Modi 3.0’s shift to a ‘Bharat first’ foreign policy.

Abstract Depression is a significant mental health issue with extensive economic implications, and recent studies suggest it may be transmitted between individuals. However, the mechanisms of this contagion remain unclear, and the social buffering effect has been understudied. This research employs three rodent models, including stress crossover, cohabitation-induced, and non-contact induced depression contagion models, to explore these mechanisms. Here, we report that that naive mice cohabiting with depressed mice showed increased corticosterone levels and depressive behaviors, unlike those with stressed mice, who did not exhibit these changes and even mitigated desperation in stressed mice. Non-contact cohabitation did not produce significant behavioral differences, but exposure to bedding from depressed mice reduced sucrose preference in naive mice. This study introduces reliable models of depression contagion, suggesting it operates independently of stress transmission. The interplay between depression contagion and social buffering may vary in different contexts. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms of depression contagion and potential strategies for preventing depressive disorders.

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with decreased heart rate variability (HRV) with an unclear intermediate mechanism. This study aimed to conduct mediation analysis to explore the impact of various adipose tissues on the relationship between T2DM and HRV. Methods A total of 380 participants were enrolled for analysis, including 249 patients with T2DM and 131 non-diabetic controls. The thicknesses of four adipose tissues (subcutaneous, extraperitoneal, intraperitoneal, and epicardial) were measured by abdominal ultrasound or echocardiography respectively. HRV was assessed by 24-hour Holter for monitoring both frequency domain indices (LF, HF, and LF/HF) and time domain indices (SDNN, SDANN, SDNN index, rMSSD and pNN50). Mediation analysis was used toexamine whether adipose tissues mediated the relationship between T2DM and each index of HRV. Then, a latent variable - HRV burden - was constructed by structural equation model with selected HRV indices to comprehensively assess the whole HRV. Results Compared to non-diabetic controls, patients with T2DM exhibited a significant reduction in indices of HRV, and a remarkable increase in the thicknesses of extraperitoneal, intraperitoneal, and epicardial adipose tissues. Mediation analysis found significant indirect effects of T2DM on six indices of HRV, including HF, SDNN, SDANN, SDNN index, rMSSD, and pNN50, which was mediated by epicardial adipose tissue rather than other adipose tissues, with the mediation proportions of 64.21%, 16.38%, 68.33%, 24.34%, 24.10% and 30.51%, respectively. Additionally, epicardial adipose tissue partially mediated the relationship between T2DM and reduced HRV burden (24.26%), which composed by SDNN, SDNN index, rMSSD, and pNN50. Conclusion Epicardial adipose tissue partially mediated the relationship between T2DM and reduced HRV, which reinforces the value of targeting heart-specific visceral fat to prevent cardiac autonomic neuropathy in diabetes.

Abstract Background Keen Osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common chronic disabling disease characterized by joint pain and dysfunction, which seriously affects patients’ quality of life. Recent studies have shown that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was a promising treatment for KOA. Purpose Investigate the effects of tDCS on pain and physical function in patients with KOA. Methods Randomized controlled trials related to tDCS and KOA were systematically searched in the PubMed, Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library, CINHL, and Web of Science databases from inception to July 23, 2024. The pain intensity was evaluated using the visual analog scale or the numeric rating scale, and the pain sensitivity was assessed using conditioned pain modulation, pressure pain threshold, heat pain threshold, or heat pain tolerance. The physical function outcome was evaluated using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index or the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score. Statistical analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4. Results Seven studies with a total of 503 participants were included. Compared to sham tDCS, tDCS was effective in reducing the short-term pain intensity (SMD: -0.58; 95% CI: -1.02, -0.14; p = 0.01) and pain sensitivity (SMD: -0.43; 95% CI: -0.70, -0.16; p = 0.002) but failed to significantly improve the long-term pain intensity (SMD: -0.26; 95% CI: -0.59, 0.08; p = 0.13) in KOA patients. In addition, tDCS did not significantly improve the short-term (SMD: -0.13; 95% CI: -0.35, 0.08; p = 0.22) and long-term (SMD: 0.02; 95% CI: -0.22, 0.25; p = 0.90) physical function in patients with KOA. Conclusions The tDCS can reduce short-term pain intensity and sensitivity but fails to significantly relieve long-term pain intensity and improve the physical function in patients with KOA. Thus, tDCS may be a potential therapeutic tool to reduce short-term pain intensity and pain sensitivity in patients with KOA.

Abstract Background Aedes albopictus is a major arbovirus vector with small stagnant water containers being its oviposition sites. Mosquitoes search for these sites based on their olfactory cues (odor and moisture emanating from the water at the oviposition site), visual cues (size and color of the site), and gustatory cues (ion and nutrient concentration in that water). The gustatory mechanism through which mosquitoes search for oviposition sites remains unknown. Methods To investigate the role of taste receptors in Ae. albopictus oviposition site selection, we developed a laboratory model. This model assessed mosquito behavior in locating and detecting oviposition sites, using a location index to quantify site preference and detection time to measure response to water presence. We compared oviposition site-searching efficiency between mosquitoes with blocked and unblocked appendages, targeting the taste organs. Transcriptome sequencing was conducted to identify differentially expressed genes between water-exposed and unexposed mosquitoes. CRISPR/Cas9 technology was then employed to generate a mutant strain with a targeted gene knockout. Results There was no significant difference between the blocked and unblocked groups in the location index. In contrast, the detection time of the unblocked group differed significantly from all other groups, including those with blocked foreleg tarsus, midleg tarsus, hindleg tarsus, all tibia, and all tarsus. Transcriptome sequencing analyses of water-exposed and unexposed mosquitoes revealed that the taste-related gene gustatory receptor 11(gr11) was differentially expressed. This gene was knocked out with CRISPR/Cas9 technology to generate a pure mutant strain with 2- and 4-bp deletions, which exhibited a significantly longer detection time than the wild-type strain. Conclusions This study reveals the role of Ae. albopictus gr11 in water detection at oviposition sites, thereby providing a theoretical basis and scientific guidelines for managing the breeding sites of these mosquitoes. Abstract Frataxin (FXN) is required for iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis, and its loss causes the early-onset neurodegenerative disease Friedreich ataxia (FRDA). Loss of FXN is a susceptibility factor in the development of diabetes, a common metabolic complication after myocardial hypertrophy in patients with FRDA. The underlying mechanism of FXN deficient-induced hyperglycemia in FRDA is, however, poorly understood. In this study, we confirmed that the FXN deficiency mouse model YG8R develops insulin resistance in elder individuals by disturbing lipid metabolic homeostasis in adipose tissues. Evaluation of lipolysis, lipogenesis, and fatty acid β-oxidation showed that lipolysis is most severely affected in white adipose tissues. Consistently, FXN deficiency significantly decreased expression of lipolytic genes encoding adipose triglyceride lipase (Atgl) and hormone-sensitive lipase (Hsl) resulting in adipocyte enlargement and inflammation. Lipolysis induction by fasting or cold exposure remarkably upregulated FXN expression, though FXN deficiency lessened the competency of lipolysis compared with the control or wild type mice. Moreover, we found that the impairment of lipolysis was present at a young age, a few months earlier than hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Forskolin, an activator of lipolysis, or pioglitazone, an agonist of PPARγ, improved insulin sensitivity in FXN-deficient adipocytes or mice. We uncovered the interplay between FXN expression and lipolysis and found that impairment of lipolysis, particularly the white adipocytes, is an early event, likely, as a primary cause for insulin resistance in FRDA patients at later age.

Abstract Purpose Higher medical education has always been a major project in the fields of education and health, and therefore, the quality of education has received much attention. Learning engagement has emerged as a significant indicator of teaching quality, attracting considerable research attention. This study aims to explore the relationship between medical students’ learning engagement and their sense of school belonging, professional identity, and academic self-efficacy. Methods We conducted an online survey using convenience sampling method with 311 medical students. We employed Revised version of the Utrech Work Engagement Scale-Student (UWES-S), Chinese version of the Psychological Sense of School Membership (PSSM) scale, Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, and the questionnaire of college students’ speciality identity for evaluation. Network analysis was used to analyze the relationships among these factors. Results Medical students’ overall performance in school showed a positive trend. However, there is still room for improvement. In the network structure of learning engagement and its influencing factors, the “emotional” aspect of professional identity (EI = 1.11) was considered to be an important node with strong centrality. And “academic competence self-efficacy” aspect of academic self-efficacy (BEI = 0.72) was considered an important node with strong transitivity. Conclusion Deepening medical students’ emotional identification with their profession and enhancing their confidence in their academic abilities may improve their learning engagement and educational quality.

Abstract This single-arm, multicenter, phase 2 trial (NCT04106180) investigated the triple combination of sintilimab (anti-PD1 antibody), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). With a median follow-up of 32.1 months, 18 (36.7%, 90% CI 25.3%–49.5%) of the 49 evaluable patients had an objective response, meeting the primary endpoint. Secondary endpoints included out-of-field (abscopal) response rate (ASR), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs). The ASR was 30.6% (95% CI 18.3%–45.4%). The median PFS and OS were 5.9 (95% CI 2.5–9.3) and 18.4 (95% CI 9.7–27.1) months, respectively. Any grade and grade 3 TRAEs occurred in 44 (86.3%) and 6 (11.8%) patients, without grade 4–5 TRAEs. Moreover, in pre-specified biomarker analyses, SBRT-induced increase of follicular helper T cells (Tfh) in unirradiated tumor lesions and patient’s blood, as well as of circulating IL-21 levels, was found associated with improved prognosis. Taken together, the triple combination therapy was well tolerated with promising efficacy and Tfh may play a critical role in SBRT-triggered anti-tumor immunity in metastatic NSCLC.

Abstract Background Preventive treatment of tuberculosis infection (TBI) is considered a crucial strategy to prevent and control tuberculosis (TB). However, the acceptance and completion rates of preventive therapy for TBI are still far from optimistic. Evidence is mounting that TB knowledge and stigma may have a substantial effect on acceptance of TBI treatment. This study aimed to explore the effect of stigma on the relationship between the level of TB knowledge and acceptance of TBI treatment. Methods 7017 general population were included in the study. We adjusted for the covariates at the individual. Stepwise logistic regression was used to examine the moderating role of TB stigma and also explore the association between TB knowledge and acceptance of TBI treatment. Results The acceptance rate of TBI treatment among the respondents was 84.38% (n = 5921). Among respondents, a significant positive correlation between acceptance of TBI treatment and TB knowledge (OR = 1.096,95%CI = 1.073,1.118). Additionally, the association between TB knowledge and acceptance of TBI treatment was found to be moderated by TB stigma. In other words, TB stigma was found to weaken the impact of TB knowledge on acceptance of TBI treatment (OR = 0.994,95%CI = 0.991,0.996). Conclusion The findings of the study indicated that having a high level of awareness about TB can enhance the general population’s acceptability of TBI treatment. TB stigma moderated this association; it weakened the relationship between TB knowledge and individuals’ willingness to accept TBI treatment. To mitigate TB stigma and enhance the intention of individuals with TBI to accept preventive therapy, it is imperative to enhance TB-related health education.

Abstract Background There is growing evidence for a relationship between gut microbiota and hepatic encephalopathy (HE). However, the causal nature of the relationship between gut microbiota and HE has not been thoroughly investigated. Method This study utilized the large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary statistics to evaluate the causal association between gut microbiota and HE risk. Specifically, two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach was used to identify the causal microbial taxa for HE. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary MR analysis. Sensitive analyses were performed to validate the robustness of the results. Results The IVW method revealed that the genus Bifidobacterium (OR = 0.363, 95% CI: 0.139-0.943, P = 0.037), the family Bifidobacteriaceae (OR = 0.359, 95% CI: 0.133-0.950, P = 0.039), and the order Bifidobacteriales (OR = 0.359, 95% CI: 0.133-0.950, P = 0.039) were negatively associated with HE. However, no causal relationship was observed among them after the Bonferroni correction test. Neither heterogeneity nor horizontal pleiotropy was found in the sensitivity analysis. Conclusion Our MR study demonstrated a potential causal association between Bifidobacterium, Bifidobacteriaceae, and Bifidobacteriales and HE. This finding may provide new therapeutic targets for patients at risk of HE in the future.

Abstract Suitable and effective matching area selection is crucial for gravity matching‐aided navigation. In this paper, an all‐field extended extremum algorithm based on an adaptive threshold (AT‐AEE) is proposed for matching area selection in the Arctic Sea. The gradient data is obtained by using the convolution of gravity reference graph data and all‐field extended extremum parameters. Then, the adaptive threshold method was employed to determine the optimal gradient threshold based on gravity anomaly data across various test areas. Data points with gradients exceeding the specified threshold are identified as local candidate points for matching areas. The test areas containing a certain proportion of local candidate points are designated as the suitable matching areas. Nine test areas in the Arctic Sea with different gravity change characteristics were chosen for simulation experiments to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. Simulation experiments showed that superior navigation positioning results could be obtained in the matching areas selected by the AT‐AEE algorithm. Compared to traditional algorithm, the matching areas derived from the AT‐AEE algorithm performed with a better consistency in the gravity matching navigation results. In suitable matching areas with the proportion of local candidate points reaching 70%, the average positioning errors could be reduced to less than 1.5 n miles.

Abstract The concept of a healthy lifestyle is receiving increasing attention. This study sought to identify an optimal healthy lifestyle profile associated with sleep health in general population of China. An online cross-sectional survey was conducted from June to July 2022. Six healthy lifestyle factors were assessed: healthy diet, regular physical exercise, never smoking, never drinking alcohol, low sedentary behavior, and normal weight. Participants were categorized into the healthy lifestyle (5-6 factors), average (3-4 factors), and unhealthy lifestyle groups (0-2 factors). The study’s primary outcome was sleep health, which included sleep quality, duration, pattern, and the presence of any sleep disorder or disturbance, including insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, obstructive apnea syndrome, and narcolepsy. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was applied to explore lifestyles associated with the selected sleep health outcomes. 41,061 individuals were included, forming 18.8% healthy, 63.8% average, and 17.4% unhealthy lifestyle groups. After adjusting for covariates, participants with healthy lifestyle were associated with a higher likelihood of good sleep quality (OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.46–1.68), normal sleep duration (OR = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.49–1.72), healthy sleep pattern (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 2.00–2.31), and lower risks of insomnia (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.61–0.71), excessive daytime sleepiness (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.60–0.73), and obstructive apnea syndrome (OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.37–0.43), but not narcolepsy (OR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.83–1.03), compared to those with unhealthy lifestyle. This large cross-sectional study is the first to our knowledge to quantify the associations of a healthy lifestyle with specific aspects of sleep health. The findings offer support for efforts to improve sleep health by modulating lifestyle.

In previous research, gamified classroom management has been found to improve high school students' classroom participation. This study applied gamification classroom management through a "Class of Oz" in an elementary school to cultivate students' learning. Two classes were randomly assigned to the experimental group, and the other two were randomly assigned to the control group. Eighty-three valid samples were retained after deleting incomplete data from the pre- and post-test. After 11 weeks of gamified classroom management, the results indicated that the experimental group experienced a higher value and emotion of learning motivation than the control group. However, there were no differences between the Chinese and mathematics scores of the two groups. In addition, qualitative observations showed that gamified classroom management attracted students' attention and improved their learning motivation. These results revealed that role-play gamified classroom management could enhance students' learning motivation without affecting their academic performance.

Even as research on teachers of Color increases, there still are few studies that examine Asian American teachers working cross-culturally with Latinx American students in US K-12 schools. This qualitative case study uses elements from borderlands theory and culturally responsive teaching to examine three Chinese American teachers working with eleven Mexican American students in three ethnically diverse urban secondary schools in the Pacific Northwest. Findings suggest that the Chinese American teachers used borderland teaching (a hybrid of borderlands theory and culturally responsive teaching) to promote academic performance and build kinships with the Mexican American students. Implications of the study include further refining borderland teaching for educational research and practice.

Few studies examined Chinese American teachers' diasporic lives in U.S. K-12 schools and society, even as research on teachers of Color increases. In responding to such scarcity, the author connects tenets of empire and AsianCrit to illustrate how the legacies of imperialism and geopolitics of race have influenced three Chinese American teachers' diasporic trajectories and teaching practices. Implications include how scholars can use these theoretical orientations to historicize research on Chinese American teachers, apply Asian Diaspora as a framework in researching Asian American teachers, and prepare Asian American teachers to unsettle racism and imperialism in schools.

As many teacher education programs have returned to in-person instructional models since the initial interruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, little research examines innovative practices during the pandemic at the intersections of racial justice and online teacher education. This self-study illustrates how one Asian male teacher educator linked technological pedagogical content knowledge with anti-racist education in an online multicultural education course at a predominantly white institution in the Pacific Northwest of the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Implications include how teacher educators can bridge anti-racist education and technological pedagogical content knowledge in research and practice as an ongoing decolonial project in a post-pandemic world.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-Asian violence in the United States has risen significantly. Many Asian American students have been disproportionately harassed in schools and fear resuming in-person learning. Thus, educators must resist returning to the old normal. Instead, they can reimagine the pandemic as a portal to justice for Asian American youth. The authors build on three hallmarks of ethnic studies "curriculum as counternarrative," "reclaiming cultural identities," and "community engagement" to suggest how ethnic studies commonalities can be mapped to social studies curricula to create a portal to affirm and empower Asian American students after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background Granuloma formation is an uncommon and persistent skin inflammatory condition caused by the injection of dermal fillers. The exact cause of this reaction is not well understood, but it may be associated with irritating components or abnormal immune function. Treating granulomas can be difficult. However, recent research has shown that Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors hold promise as a potential therapy for refractory granulomatous diseases.Objectives The aim was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tofacitinib as a treatment for granulomas secondary to filler injection and the possible mechanisms were discussed and summarized.Methods This study focuses on three cases of patients who experienced granuloma formation after receiving filler injections and were subsequently treated with tofacitinib. The efficacy and safety of the treatment were evaluated using parameters such as photographs and monitoring for any adverse reactions. In addition, a literature review was conducted to explore the underlying mechanisms and potential effects of tofacitinib.Results All three cases recovered from swelling and nodules without side effects through the off-label use of oral tofacitinib. Existing data review reveals some approaches for cutaneous granulomatous disorders like inhibiting macrophage activation and downregulation of the JAK–STAT pathway.Conclusion This report emphasizes the effectiveness of JAK inhibitors in treating granulomas caused by filler injections. Recent advancements in understanding the underlying mechanisms of granulomatous reactions have paved the way for JAK inhibitors to be regarded as a promising treatment choice. However, further research is necessary to fully assess the safety and long-term effectiveness of using tofacitinib for granuloma treatment.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that offer potential benefits to their hosts and can occasionally influence behavioral responses. However, the detailed mechanisms by which probiotics affect the behavior of their hosts and the underlying biogenic effects remain unclear. Lactic acid bacteria, specifically Lactobacillus spp. are known probiotics. Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as the fruit fly, is a well-established model organism for investigating the interaction between the host and gut microbiota in translational research. Herein, we showed that 5-day administration of Lactobacillus acidophilus (termed GMNL-185) or Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (termed GMNL-680) enhances olfactory-associative memory in Drosophila. Moreover, a combined diet of GMNL-185 and GMNL-680 demonstrated synergistic effects on memory functions. Live brain imaging revealed a significant increase in calcium responses to the training odor in the mushroom body β and γ lobes of flies that underwent mixed feeding with GMNL-185 and GMNL-680. Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and whole-mount brain immunohistochemistry revealed significant upregulation of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) expression in the fly brain following the mixed feeding. Notably, the genetic knockdown of Ldh in neurons, specifically in mushroom body, ameliorated the beneficial effects of mixed feeding with GMNL-185 and GMNL-680 on memory improvement. Altogether, our results demonstrate that supplementation with L. acidophilus and L. rhamnosus enhances memory functions in flies by increasing brain LDH levels.

BackgroundOviposition site selection is an important component of vector mosquito reproductive biology. The Asian Tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is a major and important vector of arboviruses including Dengue. Previous studies documented the preference of gravid females for small, dark-colored water containers as oviposition sites, which they sought during the twilight period (dusk) of their locomotor activity. Vision plays an important role in this behavior, and factors such as the shape, size, and color of the container, light intensity, polarization, spectrum, and other visual cues guide the search for suitable oviposition sites, but the mechanistic factors driving this behavior are unclear.Methodology/principal findingsWe blindfolded adult female compound eyes and observed the effects of a lack of vision on the ability to discriminate and utilize preferred oviposition sites. Furthermore, the transcriptomes of blindfolded mosquitoes were screened to identify genes with vision-sensitive expression profiles and gene-editing was used to create non-functional mutations in two of them, rhodopsin-like (mutation designated 'rho-l△807') and kynurenine hydroxylase (mutation designated 'khw'). Behavioral tests of both mutant and control strains revealed that the rho-l△807 mutant mosquitoes had a significant decrease in their ability to search for preferred oviposition sites that correlated with a reduced ability to recognize long-wavelength red light. The khw mutant mosquitoes also had a reduced ability to identify preferred oviposition sites that correlated with reductions in their ability to respond to variations in daily brightness and their ability to discriminate among different color options of the containers and background monochromatic light.Conclusions/significanceThis study underscores the importance of visual cues in the oviposition site selection behavior of adult female Ae. albopictus. We demonstrate that wild-type rho-l and kh gene products play a crucial role in this behavior, as mutants exhibit altered sensitivity or recognition of light intensity and substrate colors.

Ferns represent a primitive lineage within the vascular plant kingdom characterized by distinct reproductive and structural traits that set them apart from seed-bearing plants. Their diverse foliage makes them suitable for various horticultural applications, including indoor decoration, landscaping, and garden design. Despite their lack of economic products like grains or fruits, ferns contribute significantly through their biomass, ornamental value, and potential applications in traditional medicine and bio-fertilization. The bird’s nest fern (Asplenium nidus), with its rosette of large lance-shaped leaves, is a popular ornamental plant and a source of food and traditional medicine in Taiwan. The oriental chain fern (Woodwardia orientalis) and dwarf tree fern (Blechnum gibbum), which are members of the Blechnaceae family, are similarly valued for their distinctive leaf structures and esthetic appeal, whereas silver lace fern (Pteris ensiformis), known for its decorative foliage, is widely used in horticulture. Endophytic bacteria, which reside within plant tissues without causing visible harm, are known to confer numerous benefits to their host plants. Although the beneficial effects of these bacteria in seed plant have been extensively studied, their interactions with ferns remain largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated the potential of the Burkholderia seminalis strain 869T2, which is an endophytic bacterium isolated from vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides), to promote the growth of four different fern species. The leaf numbers and biomass of aerial parts of four types of fern plants were greatly increased after inoculating the strain 869T2. These data demonstrated the possibility of using endophytic bacteria isolated from seed plants to enhance the growth of more primitive vascular plants, thereby increasing their horticultural and ornamental value.

Shallow-water bathymetric maps provide vital geographic information for various coastal and marine applications such as environmental management, engineering construction, oil and gas resource exploration, and ocean fisheries. Recently, satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) has emerged as an alternative approach to shallow-water bathymetry, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. In this research, an innovative approach to bathymetry was introduced. This method provides a reliable approach for generating high-accuracy and high-reliability shallow water bathymetry results. By using Sentinel-2 time series imagery combined with ICESat-2 data, four bathymetry results at different time points are produced based on four traditional bathymetry methods. For the results at each location, a statistical method is applied to evaluate the bathymetry results, remove erroneous data, and generate high-confidence bathymetry results. The validation results indicated that the accuracy of the proposed bathymetric method achieved an R² range of 0.96 to 0.99 and an RMSE between 0.42 and 1.18 meters. When contrasted with traditional methods that utilize a single temporal image, a notable enhancement in bathymetric accuracy was observed.

Improving the accuracy of nearshore bathymetric measurements is essential for understanding coastal environments, resource management, and navigation. The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) is the first laser satellite that uses the photon-counting technique. The ICESat-2 is equipped with the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS), which enables higher-accuracy measurements of water, ice, and land elevation on Earth. Two-media photogrammetric bathymetry is a type of nearshore bathymetric technology that uses the geometrical characteristics of light rays. With this technique, the accuracy and reliability mainly depend on eliminating systematic errors and ensuring accurate spatial photogrammetric positioning relative to the object being measured. To improve the bathymetric accuracy of two-media photogrammetry, we integrated high-accuracy elevation data from photon datasets as constraining and control parameters. The improved method effectively eliminated systematic errors in two-media photogrammetry during the established joint-block adjustment model. To improve its accuracy and reliability, we employed multispectral WorldView-2 stereo images in our experiments. Furthermore, the bathymetric results were validated and assessed using in situ and photon data. The experimental results show that the highest accuracy achieved with the bathymetric measurements in our study area was a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.96 m and a mean absolute error of 0.57 m. Using the proposed fusion method, the bathymetric accuracy (as measured using the RMSE) was 1 m higher than that of two-media photogrammetry without the photon datasets.

Halobenzoquinones (HBQs) are ubiquitous disinfection by-products (DBPs) in chlorinated drinking water with various health risks including reproductive toxicity, while the potential mechanisms are still unclear. Although green tea exhibits common detoxifying properties, its ability to mitigate the toxicity of HBQs still needs to be further deepened and explored. This study attempted to investigate the possible mechanism of the most common HBQ, 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DCBQ) induced reproductive toxicity and elucidate the protective effect of green tea using a series of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) approaches. Firstly, in vivo experiments showed that 2,6-DCBQ could induce testicular damage in male rats via significantly decreasing sperm-associated Leydig cells and seminiferous tubules. Then, in vitro incubation of 2,6-DCBQ with amino acids suggested that 2,6-DCBQ could bind to proteins via residues of cysteine or lysine and provided five additional modification patterns. Following, proteomics analysis revealed that at least 42 proteins were modified by 2,6-DCBQ, which were mainly enriched in the reproductive system. These results highlighted the significance of covalent protein modification in 2,6-DCBQ reproductive toxicity. Fortunately, we found that catechins (a class of major components of green tea) could competitively bind to 2,6-DCBQ in vivo and in vitro, reducing the amount and type of 2,6-DCBQ-protein adducts, thereby attenuating the reproductive system damage caused by 2,6-DCBQ. This study provides new insights into 2,6-DCBQ-induced reproductive system damage and reveals a new mechanism of green tea detoxification. Moreover, these findings offer potential strategies for alleviating the harmful impacts of environmental toxicants on human health.

IntroductionBacterial spot, caused by diverse xanthomonads classified into four lineages within three species, poses a significant threat to global pepper and tomato production. In Taiwan, tomato bacterial spot xanthomonads phylogenetically related to an atypical Xanthomonas euvesicatoria pv. perforans (Xep) strain NI1 from Nigeria were found.MethodsTo investigate the genetic structure of Taiwanese Xep strains and determine the phylogenetic position of the atypical strains, we completed high-quality, gap-free, circularized genomes of seven Taiwanese Xep strains and performed comparative genomic analyses with genomes of X. euvesicatoria pathovars. Average nucleotide identity, core genome analysis, and phylogenomic analysis were conducted.ResultsThree sequenced strains were identified as typical Xep, while four clustered with the atypical strain NI1, forming a distinct genomovar within X. euvesicatoria, proposed as X. euvesicatoria genomovar taiwanensis (Xet). This new lineage likely originated in Taiwan and spread to Nigeria through global seed trade. At the genomovar level, chromosomes remained conserved among Taiwanese strains, while plasmids likely contributed to bacterial virulence, avirulence, and field fitness. Gap-free genomes revealed associations between the evolution of type III effectors, horizontal gene transfer events, plasmid diversity, and recombination.DiscussionThis study highlights the critical roles of horizontal gene transfer and plasmids in shaping the genetic makeup, evolution, and environmental adaptation of plant pathogenic xanthomonads. The identification of a new genomovar, X. euvesicatoria genomovar taiwanensis, provides insights into the diversity and global spread of bacterial spot pathogens through seed trade.
