The passive Q-switching performance of an in-band pumped Dy-doped fluorozirconate fibre laser emitting around 3.1 µm is investigated. Passively Q-switched laser operation is demonstrated employing semi-conductor saturable absorber mirrors. Stable operation is achieved, with a minimum pulse duration of 464 ns, a highest repetition frequency of 210 kHz and peak pulse powers up to 3 W.

Introduction: Suicidality is a growing problem in the US, and the emergency department (ED) is often the front line for the management and effective treatment of acutely suicidal patients. There is a dearth of interventions that emergency physicians may use to manage and effectively treat acutely suicidal patients. To the extent that recently described interventions are available for ED personnel, no review has been conducted to identify them. This scoping review is intended to fill this gap by systematically reviewing the literature to identify recently described interventions that can be administered in the ED to reduce symptoms and stabilize patients. Methods: We conducted a search of PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL in January 2024 to identify papers published between 2013–2023 for original research trialing recent interventions for the effective treatment of suicidality in the ED. We assessed 16 full-text articles for eligibility, and nine met inclusion criteria. Included studies were evaluated for features and characteristics, the fit of the intervention to the ED environment, and interventional efficacy. Results: Four studies assessed the efficacy of a single dose of the anesthetic/analgesic agent ketamine. Three studies assessed the efficacy of a brief psychosocial intervention delivered in the ED, two of which paired this intervention with the provision of follow-up care (postcard contact and referral assistance/case management, respectively). The remaining two studies trialed a brief, motivational interviewing-based intervention. Included studies had strong experimental designs (randomized controlled trials) but small sample sizes (average 57). Among the interventions represented across these nine studies, a single dose of ketamine and the brief psychosocial intervention Crisis Response Planning (CRP) show promise as ED-appropriate interventions for suicidality. Ketamine and CRP demonstrated the strongest fit to the ED environment and most robust efficacy findings. Conclusion: This review identified one drug (ketamine) and four unique psychological/behavioral interventions that have been used to treat acute suicidality in the ED. There is currently insufficient evidence to suggest that these interventions will prove efficacious and well-suited to be delivered in the ED environment. Future studies should continue to test these interventions in the ED setting to determine their feasibility and efficacy.

(1) The prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in lung transplant recipients (LTx) is based on the administration of VGC for a period of 6–12 months, but there is little information on the premature discontinuation of the drug. Our objective was to evaluate the reasons for early cessation of VGC and the dynamics of CMV replication after discontinuation. (2) We carried out a retrospective study of LTx on VGC prophylaxis according to guidelines, with an outpatient follow-up period of >90 days. The detection of any level of CMV-DNA in the plasma (Cobas, Roche Diagnostics®) during a period of 18 months after the discontinuation of VGC was considered positive. (3) We included 312 patients (64% male, mean age 53.50 ± 12.27; 71% D+R+, 15% D−R+, and 14% D+R−) in our study. The prescribed prophylaxis was completed by 179 patients (57.05%). The mean duration of prophylaxis was 7.17 ± 1.08 months. The recorded reasons for VGC discontinuation in 133 patients (43%) were myelotoxicity (n = 55), impaired renal function (n = 32), and gastrointestinal disturbances (n = 11). The reason for discontinuation was not recorded for 29 patients. CMV-DNA was detected in 79% (n = 246) of cases, and D+R+ and D+R− recipients showed a high risk of detection (p < 0.001). The median times to onset of CMV-DNA detection were 35 days in D+R−, 73 days in D+R+, and 96 days in D−R+ (p < 0.001). (4) Adverse effects of VGC are frequent in LTx. CMV-DNA detection is very common after the discontinuation of VGC and is related to the CMV donor and recipient serostatus.

Disorders affecting the neurological and musculoskeletal systems represent international health priorities. A significant impediment to progress in trials of new therapies is the absence of responsive, objective, and valid outcome measures sensitive to early disease changes. A key finding in individuals with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders is the compositional changes to muscles, evinced by the expression of fatty infiltrates. Quantification of skeletal muscle composition by MRI has emerged as a sensitive marker for the severity of these disorders; however, little is known about the composition of healthy muscles across the lifespan. Knowledge of what is ‘typical’ age-related muscle composition is essential to accurately identify and evaluate what is ‘atypical’. This innovative project, known as the MuscleMap, will achieve the first important steps towards establishing a world-first, normative reference MRI dataset of skeletal muscle composition with the potential to provide valuable insights into various diseases and disorders, ultimately improving patient care and advancing research in the field.

This study tested the hypothesis that exposure of children prior to their third birthday to procedures requiring general anesthesia is associated with an increased incidence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in later life. This study employed a nested, 1:2 matched-case control study design using ASD cases identified in a population-based birth cohort of children born in Olmsted County, MN from 1976 to 2000. Matching variables included sex, date of birth, and mother's age in conditional logistic regression including 499 ASD cases and 998 controls. After adjusting for birth weight and health status, there was no significant association between exposure and ASD (OR 1.27 [95% CI 0.92-1.76]), indicating that general anesthesia is not associated with an increased risk of ASD.

Abstract Purpose The aim of this study was to analyze the within-week differences in external training intensity in different microcycles considering different playing positions in women elite volleyball players. Methods The training and match data were collected during the 2020–2021 season, which included 10 friendly matches, 41 league matches and 11 champions league matches. The players’ position, training/match duration, training/match load, local positioning system (LPS) total distance, LPS jumps, accelerations, decelerations, high metabolic load distance (HMLD), acute and chronic (AC) mean and AC ratio calculated with the rolling average (RA) method and the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) method, monotony and strain values were analyzed. Results All the variables except strain, Acc/Dec ratio and acute mean (RA) showed significant differences among distance to match days. Regarding the players’ positions, the only difference was found in the AC ratio (EWMA); in all microcycles, the middle blocker player showed workload values when compared with the left hitter, setter and libero. Conclusion Overall, the analysis revealed that the intensity of all performance indicators, except for strain, acc/dec and acute mean load (RA), showed significant differences among distance to match day with moderate to large effect sizes. When comparing players’ positions, the middle blocker accumulated the lowest loads. There were no significant differences among other positions.

ABSTRACT: Skin and hair coat play important functions in maintaining homeostasis and thermoregulation for cattle, which can affect all modes of heat loss. Our objective was to investigate the effect of hyperthermia experienced in utero during late gestation on postnatal hair length, skin properties, and thermoregulation. Pregnant dams were heat stressed (n = 41) or actively cooled (n = 41) for the last ∼56 d of gestation and gave birth to heifers that were in utero heat stressed (IUHT) or in utero cooled (IUCL), respectively. Hair samples and skin tissue biopsies were collected from neck and rump locations at birth (d 0), 1 wk after weaning (d 63), and at 12 mo. Hair samples were also obtained at 4 and 8 mo. Skin tissue was stained with hematoxylin and eosin to visualize morphology. Hair length (short and long hairs, undercoat and topcoat, respectively), stratum corneum (SC) area, SC thickness, epidermis thickness, sweat gland (SWT) number, SWT cross-sectional area, SWT average size, sebaceous gland (SEB) number, SEB cross-sectional area, SEB average size, and sweat gland depth were assessed. Respiration rate, skin temperature, sweating rate, and rectal temperature was measured weekly from d 7 to 63. Additionally, thermoregulatory patterns were measured every 4 h over a 36-h interval beginning 4 d after weaning. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED in SAS with a main effect of in utero treatment with location and time points analyzed separately. No difference in hair parameters were detected at d 0 or 12 mo. At d 63, IUHT heifers had longer average hair length (14.8 vs. 13.8 ± 0.2 mm, standard error), shorter undercoats (9.3 vs. 10.4 ± 0.3 mm), longer topcoats (19.6 vs. 17.1 ± 0.3 mm), and a greater difference between topcoat and undercoat (10.1 vs. 7.0 ± 0.4 mm). At 4 mo, IUHT heifers had longer average hair lengths (26.1 vs. 22.2 ± 1.0 mm) and longer topcoats (36.9 vs. 33.9 ± 1.1 mm), and at 8 mo, IUHT had longer average hair lengths (17.9 vs. 16.2 ± 0.6 mm), relative to IUCL. At d 0, IUHT heifers had more (13 vs. 9 ± 2 glands) but smaller average sized SEB (neck: 1,636 vs. 2,238 ± 243 µm2; rump: 2,100 vs. 3,352 ± 379 µm2) and reduced SC area (79,243 vs. 169,419 ± 13,071 µm2). At d 63, IUHT had fewer SEB (11 vs. 15 ± 2 glands), smaller SWT (0.16 vs. 0.23 ± 0.02 mm2), fewer SWT (16 vs. 23 ± 4 glands), and deeper SWT (0.5 vs. 0.4 ± 0.03 mm). At 12 mo, IUHT had greater distance from the skin surface to the most superficial SWT (0.016 vs. 0.015 ± 0.0004 mm), shorter distance to the deepest SWT (0.031 vs. 0.033 ± 0.001 mm), and smaller SWT (81.1 vs. 108.9 ± 10.8 µm2), relative to IUCL. When measured both weekly and hourly, IUHT heifers had higher rectal temperature and sweating rate. Overall, in utero hyperthermia triggers long-lasting hair and skin adaptations, possibly leading to differences in postnatal thermoregulation.

Abstract Exposure to heat stress during a cow’s dry period disrupts mammary gland remodeling, impairing mammary function and milk production during the subsequent lactation. Yet, proteomic changes in the mammary gland underlying these effects are not yet known. We investigated alterations in the mammary proteome and phosphoproteome during lactation as a result of dry period heat stress using an isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based approach. Cows were cooled (CL; n = 12) with fans and water soakers in a free stall setting or were heat stressed through lack of access to cooling devices (HT; n = 12) during the entire dry period (approximately 46 days). All cows were cooled postpartum. Mammary biopsies were harvested from a subset of cows (n = 4 per treatment) at 14, 42, and 84 days in milk. Overall, 251 proteins and 224 phosphorylated proteins were differentially abundant in the lactating mammary gland of HT compared to CL cows. Top functions of differentially abundant proteins and phosphoproteins affected were related to immune function and inflammation, amino acid metabolism, reactive oxygen species production and metabolism, tissue remodeling, and cell stress response. Patterns of protein expression and phosphorylation are indicative of increased oxidative stress, mammary gland restructuring, and immune dysregulation due to prior exposure to dry period heat stress. This study provides insights into the molecular underpinnings of disrupted mammary function and health during lactation arising from prior exposure to dry period heat stress, which might have led to lower milk yields.

Abstract Background The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention contracted with laboratories to sequence the SARS-CoV-2 genome from positive samples across the United States to enable public health officials to investigate the impact of variants on disease severity as well as the effectiveness of vaccines and treatment. Herein we present the initial results correlating RT-PCR quality control metrics with sample collection and sequencing methods from full SARS-CoV-2 viral genomic sequencing of 24,441 positive patient samples between April and June 2021. Methods RT-PCR confirmed (N Gene Ct value 99% of positives sequenced was Omicron. Conclusion These initial analyses highlight the importance of sequencing platform, sample collection methods, and RT-PCR Ct values in guiding surveillance efforts. These surveillance studies evaluating genetic changes of SARS-CoV-2 have been identified as critical by the CDC that can affect many aspects of public health including transmission, disease severity, diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines.

Abstract Background Since 2015, the Global Technical Strategy (GTS) for Malaria 2016–2030 has been adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a comprehensive framework to accelerate progress for malaria elimination in endemic countries. This strategy sets the target of reducing global malaria incidence and mortality rates by 90% in 2030. Here it is sought to evaluate Brazil’s achievements towards reaching the WHO GTS milestone in 2030. Considering the total number of new malaria cases in 2015, the main research question is: will Brazil reach the malaria elimination goal in 2030? Methods Analytical strategies were undertaken using the SIVEP-malaria official databases of the Brazilian Malaria Control Programme for the Brazilian Amazon region from 2009 to 2020. Spatial and time-series analyses were applied for identifying municipalities that support the highest numbers of malaria cases over the years. Forecast analysis was used for predicting the estimated number of new cases in Brazil in 2025–2050. Results Brazil has significantly reduced the number of new malaria cases in 2020 in comparison with 2015 in the states of Acre (− 56%), Amapá (− 75%), and Amazonas (− 21%); however, they increased in the states of Pará (156%), Rondônia (74%), and Roraima (362%). Forecast of the predicted number of new malaria cases in 2030 is 74,764 (95% CI: 41,116–141,160) in the Brazilian Amazon. Conclusions It is likely that Brazil will reduce the number of new malaria cases in the Brazilian Amazon in 2030 in relation to that in 2015. Herein forecast shows a reduction by 46% (74,754 in 2030 forecast/137,982 in 2015), but this reduction is yet far from the proposed reduction under the WHO GTS 2030 milestone (90%). Stable and unbeatable transmission in the Juruá River Valley, Manaus, and Lábrea still support endemic malaria in the Brazilian Amazon. Today’s cross-border malaria is impacting the state of Roraima unprecedently. If this situation is maintained, the malaria elimination goal (zero cases) may not be reached before 2050. An enhanced political commitment is vital to ensure optimal public health intervention designs in the post-2030 milestones for malaria elimination. Graphical Abstract

En esta línea, expone los aspectos normativos y descriptivos de la ley como fuente del Derecho en torno a las ideas de normas constitutivas de autoridades, competencias y procedimientos. Sobre estas bases estipula una definición de ley y apunta sus formas características.

Abstract Serotonin (5-HT) is an autocrine-paracrine molecule within the mammary gland regulating homeostasis during lactation and triggering involution after milk stasis. Exposure of dairy cows to hyperthermia during the dry period alters mammary gland involution processes leading to reduced subsequent yields. Herein, primary bovine mammary epithelial cells (pBMEC) under thermoneutral (TN, 37 °C) or heat shock (HS, 41.5 °C) conditions were cultured with either 0, 50, 200, or 500 μM 5-Hydroxy-L-tryptophan (5-HTP; 5-HT precursor) for 8-, 12- or 24-h. Expression of 95 genes involved in 5-HT signaling, involution and tight junction regulation were evaluated using a Multiplex RT-qPCR BioMark Dynamic Array Circuit. Different sets of genes were impacted by 5-HTP or temperature, or by their interaction. All 5-HT signaling genes were downregulated after 8-h of HS and then upregulated after 12-h, relative to TN. After 24-h, apoptosis related gene, FASLG, was upregulated by all doses except TN-200 μM 5-HTP, and cell survival gene, FOXO3, was upregulated by HS-50, 200 and 500 μM 5-HTP, suggesting 5-HTP involvement in cell turnover under HS. Supplementing 5-HTP at various concentrations in vitro to pBMEC modulates the expression of genes that might aid in promoting epithelial cell turn-over during involution in dairy cattle under hyperthermia.

The fast deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) is creating a series of challenges that should be addressed in the coming years. In particular, distribution grids are playing an increasingly important role in the electricity system. Moreover, the three-phase four-wire structure of this network contribute to the appearance of imbalances and a series of problems derived from them. In this context, distribution system operators (DSOs), as the main responsible for the distribution grid, must ensure the quality of supply to consumers. This paper takes advantage of a four-legs D-STATCOM to remove current imbalances in low-voltage power lines. A 35-kVA prototype has been developed and installed in an urban distribution grid. The effect of the D-STATCOM has been analyzed during its first month of operation, studying and measuring the advantages of providing DERs the ability to perform active balancing to the utility grid. The results show a reduction in current imbalances from 21 % to 0 % and neutral current from 10.3 A to 0.4 A. In addition, a 13 % decrease in cable losses has been estimated and a slight improvement in voltage unbalance factor can be noted.

Patients were included if they were in the ICU after undergoing cardiac surgery and if they could self-report their pain. A non-invasive probe was placed on the patient’s finger for the continuous monitoring of the NOL index. Patients’ self-reports of pain and anxiety (0– 10 Numeric Rating Scale or NRS), and behavioral scores with the Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT) were obtained before and during a non-nociceptive procedure (ie, non-invasive blood pressure [NIBP] using cuff inflation), and before, during and after a nociceptive procedure (ie, chest tube removal [CTR]) for a total of five time points. Non-parametric tests were used to compare scores at different time points, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed.Results: Fifty-four patients were included in the analysis. The NOL index, pain and anxiety scores were significantly higher during CTR compared to rest and NIBP (p < 0.001). During CTR, the NOL was associated with self-reported pain intensity and unpleasantness but not with anxiety and CPOT scores. The NOL showed a modest performance in detecting pain (NRS ≥ 1 and ≥ 5) in this sample with sensitivity and specificity ranging from 61% to 85%.Conclusion: The NOL index was able to discriminate between a non-nociceptive and a nociceptive procedure and was associated with self-reported pain. Abstract Background Malaria elimination in Brazil poses several challenges, including the control of Plasmodium falciparum foci and the hidden burden of Plasmodium vivax in pregnancy. Maternal malaria and fetal health outcomes were investigated with a perinatal surveillance study in the municipality of Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre state, Brazilian Amazon. The research questions are: what are the causal effects of low birth weight on low Apgar at 5-min and of perinatal anaemia on stillbirth? Methods From November 2018 to October 2019, pregnant women of ≥ 22 weeks or puerperal mothers, who delivered at the referral maternity hospital (Juruá Women and Children’s Hospital), were recruited to participate in a malaria surveillance study. Clinical information was obtained from a questionnaire and abstracted from medical reports. Haemoglobin level and presence of malarial parasites were tested by haematology counter and light microscopy, respectively. Low Apgar at 5-min and stillbirth were the outcomes analysed in function of clinical data and epidemiologic risk factors for maternal malaria infection using both a model of additive and independent effects and a causal model with control of confounders and use of mediation. Results In total, 202 (7.2%; N = 2807) women had malaria during pregnancy. Nearly half of malaria infections during pregnancy (n = 94) were P. falciparum. A total of 27 women (1.03%; N = 2632) had perinatal malaria (19 P. vivax and 8 P. falciparum). Perinatal anaemia was demonstrated in 1144 women (41.2%; N = 2779) and low birth weight occurred in 212 newborns (3.1%; N = 2807). A total of 75 newborns (2.7%; N = 2807) had low (

We present simple analytic expressions to compute the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon g-2 in the space-like region up to next-to-next-to-leading order. These results can be employed in lattice QCD calculations of this contribution as well as in space-like determinations based on scattering data, like that expected from the proposed MUonE experiment at CERN.

The acute stress response is characterized by activation of multiple interconnected systems in the body, resulting in the release of a flood of hormones and immune mediators into circulation. In addition to detection of these molecules in the serum, saliva can serve as a source of these markers as well and can be collected in a non-invasive way. The complete profile of salivary biomarkers associated with the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal/gonadal axes and the immune system during the acute stress response has not been fully elucidated. In a cohort of 62 first responders engaged in a stress training exercise, we set out to determine patterns of cytokine, chemokine and hormone shifts during the acute stress response. Salivary samples were collected immediately before (pre-stress), immediately after (post-stress) and 1 h after the stress test (recovery). Multiplex ELISA panels of 42 cytokines and 6 steroid and thyroid hormones were used to determine concentrations of these biomarkers during the three aforementioned time points. Principal components analysis was conducted to determine patterns in the large data sets collected. In our ≥0.3 loading principal components analysis, for pre-stress vs. post, post-stress vs. recovery and pre-stress vs. recovery, a total of three, four and three factors accounted for 56.6, 68.34, and 61.70% of the biomarker variation for each phase respectively. In the ≥0.7 loading principal components analysis, three, four and three factors were found for pre-stress vs. post, post-stress vs. recovery and pre-stress vs. recovery stages, respectively. Of note, in our ≥0.3 loading principal components analysis, MCP1 was present in all three factors from pre-stress to post-stress, and fractalkine was found to be in all four factors post-stress vs. recovery and pre vs. recovery from stress. Additionally, hormones testosterone, estradiol, T4 and T3 grouped together consistently in the same factor for all phases of acute stress in both ≥0.3 and ≥0.7 principal components analysis. Overall, our results identified specific patterns of immune markers and hormones that shift during acute stress and warrant further investigation to understand their mechanistic role in regulating the stress response.

Abstract Background Osmophobia, is common among primary headaches, with prevalence of migraine. The study aimed to evaluate prevalence and clinical characteristics of patients with osmophobia in a cohort of primary headache patients selected at a tertiary headache center. The second aim was to verify the possible predicting role of osmophobia in preventive treatment response in a sub cohort of migraine patients. Methods This was an observational retrospective cohort study based on data collected in a tertiary headache center. We selected patients aged 18–65 years, diagnosed as migraine without aura (MO), migraine with aura (MA) or Chronic Migraine (CM), Tension-Type Headache (TTH); and Cluster Headache (CH). We also selected a sub-cohort of migraine patients who were prescribed preventive treatment, according to Italian Guidelines, visited after 3 months follow up. Patients were considered osmophobic, if reported this symptom in at least the 20% of headache episodes. Other considered variables were: headache frequeny, the migraine disability assessment (MIDAS), Allodynia Symptom Checklist, Self-rating Depression scale, Self-rating Anxiety scale, Pain intensity evaluated by Numerical Rating Scale-NRS- form 0 to 10. Results The 37,9% of patients reported osmophobia (444 patients with osmophobia, 726 without osmophobia). Abstract Background Environmental disturbance, deforestation and socioeconomic factors all affect malaria incidence in tropical and subtropical endemic areas. Deforestation is the major driver of habitat loss and fragmentation, which frequently leads to shifts in the composition, abundance and spatial distribution of vector species. The goals of the present study were to: (i) identify anophelines found naturally infected with Plasmodium; (ii) measure the effects of landscape on the number of Nyssorhynchus darlingi, presence of Plasmodium-infected Anophelinae, human biting rate (HBR) and malaria cases; and (iii) determine the frequency and peak biting time of Plasmodium-infected mosquitoes and Ny. darlingi. Methods Anopheline mosquitoes were collected in peridomestic and forest edge habitats in seven municipalities in four Amazon Brazilian states. Females were identified to species and tested for Plasmodium by real-time PCR. Negative binomial regression was used to measure any association between deforestation and number of Ny. darlingi, number of Plasmodium-infected Anophelinae, HBR and malaria. Peak biting time of Ny. darlingi and Plasmodium-infected Anophelinae were determined in the 12-h collections. Binomial logistic regression measured the association between presence of Plasmodium-infected Anophelinae and landscape metrics and malaria cases. Results Ninety-one females of Ny. darlingi, Ny. rangeli, Ny. benarrochi B and Ny. konderi B were found to be infected with Plasmodium. Analysis showed that the number of malaria cases and the number of Plasmodium-infected Anophelinae were more prevalent in sites with higher edge density and intermediate forest cover (30–70%). The distance of the drainage network to a dwelling was inversely correlated to malaria risk. The peak biting time of Plasmodium-infected Anophelinae was 00:00–03:00 h. The presence of Plasmodium-infected mosquitoes was higher in landscapes with > 13 malaria cases. Conclusions Nyssorhynchus darlingi, Ny. rangeli, Ny. benarrochi B and Ny. konderi B can be involved in malaria transmission in rural settlements. The highest fraction of Plasmodium-infected Anophelinae was caught from midnight to 03:00 h. In some Amazonian localities, the highest exposure to infectious bites occurs when residents are sleeping, but transmission can occur throughout the night. Forest fragmentation favors increases in both malaria and the occurrence of Plasmodium-infected mosquitoes in peridomestic habitat. The use of insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets can decrease human exposure to infectious Anophelinae and malaria transmission.

Abstract In mammals, peripheral serotonin is involved in regulating energy balance. Herein, we characterized the transcriptomic profile and microstructure of adipose and muscle in pre-weaned calves with increased circulating serotonin. Holstein bull calves (21 ± 2 days old) were fed milk replacer supplemented with saline (CON, 8 mL/day n = 4) or 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP, 90 mg/day, n = 4) for 10 consecutive days. Calves were euthanized on d10 to harvest adipose and muscle for RNA-Sequencing and histological analyses. Twenty-two genes were differentially expressed in adipose, and 33 in muscle. Notably, Interferon gamma inducible protein-47 was highly expressed and upregulated in muscle and adipose (avg. log FC = 6.5). Enriched pathways in adipose tissue revealed serotonin’s participation in lipid metabolism and PPAR signaling. In muscle, enriched pathways were related to histone acetyltransferase binding, Jak-STAT signaling, PI3K-Akt signaling and cell proliferation. Supplementation of 5-HTP increased cell proliferation and total cell number in adipose and muscle. Adipocyte surface area was smaller and muscle fiber area was not different in the 5-HTP group. Manipulating the serotonin pathway, through oral supplementation of 5-HTP, influences signaling pathways and cellular processes in adipose and muscle related to endocrine and metabolic functions which might translate into improvements in calf growth and development.

Small-sided games (SSGs) are commonly employed to simulate game-specific scenarios, emphasizing the importance of incorporating numerical equality and imbalance to mirror real match dynamics. This study evaluated the physical, physiological, and tactical responses of U-15 and U-17 soccer players during SSGs with numerical balance and numerical superiority in the offensive phase. The sample included 28 male athletes, with 14 from each age group participating in official competitions based on the national schedule. The SSGs were organized in 5v5 and 5v5+2 configurations, with each session consisting of four 6-minute bouts interspersed with 3-minute recovery periods. The sessions alternated between formats, with the first 6-minute period conducted as 5v5, followed by 5v5+2, and so on. On the second day of data collection, the order was reversed. The results indicated differences in the factor age group for distances covered at speeds of 7.20 to 14.29 km/h [F(1,74)=4.965, p=0.029, η²=0.06] and 14.30 to 19.69 km/h [F(1,74)=13.323, p<0.0001, η²=0.15], average heart rate (HRavg) [F(1,74)=13.292, p<0.0001, η²=0.15], maximum heart rate (HRmax) [F(1,74)=4.844, p=0.031, η²=0.06], spatial exploration index (SEI) [F(1,74)=134.061, p<0.0001, η²=0.64], depth [F(1,74)=93.341, p<0.0001, η²=0.56], width [F(1,74)=7.830, p=0.007, η²=0.10], and length per width ratio [F(1,14)=46.095, p<0.001, η²=0.77]. Moreover, considering SEI, there was an interaction between the age group and SSG format [F(1,74)=4.736, p=0.033, η²=0.06], with U-17 players presenting higher SEI compared to U-15 (p<0.001). Additionally, SEI was higher in U-17 compared to U-15 in the 5v5+2 (p<0.001) and in 5v5 (p<0.001) SSGs. Thus, it is observed that numerically unbalanced games did not alter physical, physiological, and tactical responses. Abstract We present a detailed description of the recent idea for a direct decomposition of Feynman integrals onto a basis of master integrals by projections, as well as a direct derivation of the differential equations satisfied by the master integrals, employing multivariate intersection numbers. We discuss a recursive algorithm for the computation of multivariate intersection numbers, and provide three different approaches for a direct decomposition of Feynman integrals, which we dub the straight decomposition, the bottom-up decomposition, and the top-down decomposition. These algorithms exploit the unitarity structure of Feynman integrals by computing intersection numbers supported on cuts, in various orders, thus showing the synthesis of the intersection-theory concepts with unitarity-based methods and integrand decomposition. We perform explicit computations to exemplify all of these approaches applied to Feynman integrals, paving a way towards potential applications to generic multi-loop integrals.
