E-commerce provides rich multimodal data that is barely leveraged in practice. One aspect of this data is a category tree that is being used in search and recommendation. However, in practice, during a user’s session there is often a mismatch between a textual and a visual representation of a given category. Motivated by the problem, we introduce the task of category-to-image retrieval in e-commerce and propose a model for the task, CLIP-ITA. The model leverages information from multiple modalities (textual, visual, and attribute modality) to create product representations. We explore how adding information from multiple modalities (textual, visual, and attribute modality) impacts the model’s performance. In particular, we observe that CLIP-ITA significantly outperforms a comparable model that leverages only the visual modality and a comparable model that leverages the visual and attribute modality.

Ice has a very high plastic anisotropy with easy dislocation glide on basal planes, while glide on non-basal planes is much harder. Basal glide involves dislocations with the Burgers vector b = 〈a〉, while glide on non-basal planes can involve dislocations with b = 〈a〉, b = [c], and b = 〈c + a〉. During the natural ductile flow of polar ice sheets, most of the deformation is expected to occur by basal slip accommodated by other processes, including non-basal slip and grain boundary processes. However, the importance of different accommodating processes is controversial. The recent application of micro-diffraction analysis methods to ice, such as X-ray Laue diffraction and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), has demonstrated that subgrain boundaries indicative of non-basal slip are present in naturally deformed ice, although so far the available data sets are limited. In this study we present an analysis of a large number of subgrain boundaries in ice core samples from one depth level from two deep ice cores from Antarctica (EPICA-DML deep ice core at 656 m of depth) and Greenland (NEEM deep ice core at 719 m of depth). EBSD provides information for the characterization of subgrain boundary types and on the dislocations that are likely to be present along the boundary. EBSD analyses, in combination with light microscopy measurements, are presented and interpreted in terms of the dislocation slip systems. The most common subgrain boundaries are indicative of basal 〈a〉 slip with an almost equal occurrence of subgrain boundaries indicative of prism [c] or 〈c + a〉 slip on prism and/or pyramidal planes. A few subgrain boundaries are indicative of prism 〈a〉 slip or slip of 〈a〉 screw dislocations on the basal plane. In addition to these classical polygonization processes that involve the recovery of dislocations into boundaries, alternative mechanisms are discussed for the formation of subgrain boundaries that are not related to the crystallography of the host grain.The finding that subgrain boundaries indicative of non-basal slip are as frequent as those indicating basal slip is surprising. Our evidence of frequent non-basal slip in naturally deformed polar ice core samples has important implications for discussions on ice about plasticity descriptions, rate-controlling processes which accommodate basal glide, and anisotropic ice flow descriptions of large ice masses with the wider perspective of sea level evolution.

Parkinson’s disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders and several mutations in different genes have been identified to contribute to the disease. A loss of function parkin RING1 domain mutant (C289G) is associated with autosomal-recessive juvenile-onset Parkinsonism (AR-JP) and displays altered solubility and sequesters into aggregates. Single overexpression of almost each individual member of the Hsp40 (DNAJ) family of chaperones efficiently reduces parkin C289G aggregation and requires interaction with and activity of endogenously expressed Hsp70 s. For DNAJB6 and DNAJB8, potent suppressors of aggregation of polyglutamine proteins for which they rely mainly on an S/T-rich region, it was found that the S/T-rich region was dispensable for suppression of parkin C289G aggregation. Our data implies that different disease-causing proteins pose different challenges to the protein homeostasis system and that DNAJB6 and DNAJB8 are highly versatile members of the DNAJ protein family with multiple partially non-overlapping modes of action with respect to handling disease-causing proteins, making them interesting potential therapeutic targets.

Galaxy clusters are the densest large scale structures in the Universe. This makes them ideal laboratories for studying the effect of environment on the formation and evolution of galaxies. To truly understand the role of environment in galaxy evolution it is essential that galaxy clusters are studied across cosmic time, back to when the Universe was still relatively young and galaxy clusters were still in the process of formation. Finding these forming galaxy clusters (or protoclusters) in the early Universe is difficult. One of the ways to do this is by looking at the environment of high-z radio galaxies. These special, very massive galaxies are often at the centre of overdensities that are expected to grow into galaxy clusters. In this thesis I have studied these protoclusters in order to determine what the nature of these structures is and how they evolve and whether there is any indication of environmental in fluence on the protocluster galaxies at such early times. I have also attempted to identify new protoclusters for future research.

The environment of the high-z radio galaxy PKS 1138-262 at z~2.2 is a prime example of a forming galaxy cluster. We use deep SINFONI data to perform a detailed study of the kinematics of the galaxies within 60 kpc of the radio core and we link this to the kinematics of the protocluster on the megaparsec scale. Identification of optical emission lines shows that 11 galaxies are at the redshift of the protocluster. The density of line emitters is more than an order of magnitude higher in the core of the protocluster than the larger scale environment. This implies a matter overdensity in the core of delta_m~70 which is similar to the outskirts of local galaxy clusters. The velocity distribution of the confirmed satellite galaxies shows a broad, double-peaked velocity structure with sigma=1360+/-206 km/s. A similar broad, double-peaked distribution was found in a previous study targeting the large scale protocluster structure, indicating that a common process is acting on both small and large scales. Including all spectroscopically confirmed protocluster galaxies, a velocity dispersion of 1013+/-87 km/s is found. We show that the protocluster has likely decoupled from the Hubble flow and is a dynamically evolved structure. Comparison to the Millenium simulation indicates that the protocluster velocity distribution is consistent with that of the most massive haloes at z~2, but we rule out that the protocluster is a fully virialized structure based on dynamical arguments and its X-ray luminosity. Comparison to merging haloes in the Millennium simulation shows that the structure as observed in and around the Spiderweb galaxy is best interpreted as being the result of a merger between two massive haloes. We propose that this merger can result in an increase in star formation and AGN activity in the protocluster core and is possibly an important stage in the evolution of massive cD galaxies., 12 pages, 7 figures. This is a study of H-alpha emitters in two dense galaxy proto-clusters surrounding radio galaxies at z~2. We show that the proto-cluster surrounding MRC 1138-262 contains 14+/-2 times more H-alpha candidates than the average field (9 sigma significance), and the z=2.35 radio galaxy 4C+10.48 is surrounded by 12+/-2 times more emitters than the field (5 sigma), so it is also likely to reside in a dense proto-cluster environment. We compared these H-alpha emitters, situated in dense environments, to a control field sample selected from 3 separate fields forming a total area of 172 arcmin^2. We constructed and compared H-alpha and rest-frame R continuum luminosity functions of the emitters in both environments. The star formation density is on average 13 times greater in the proto-clusters than the field at z~2, so the total star formation rate within the central 1.5Mpc of the proto-clusters exceeds 3000Msun/yr. However, we found no significant difference in the shape of the H-alpha luminosity functions, implying that environment does not substantially affect the strength of the H-alpha line from strongly star forming galaxies. The proto-cluster emitters are typically 0.8mag brighter in rest-frame R continuum than field emitters, implying they are twice as massive as their field counterparts at the same redshift. We also show the proto-cluster galaxies have lower specific star formation rates than field galaxies, meaning the emitters in the dense environments formed more of their stars earlier than the field galaxies. We conclude that galaxy growth in the early Universe was accelerated in dense environments, and that cluster galaxies differed from field galaxies even before the cluster had fully formed., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Children’s digital skills were assessed by asking 25,000 European 9-16 year old internet users about their online activities, skills and self-efficacy. The range of digital skills and online activities are linked. But many younger (11-13 year old) children lack key critical and safety skills. Also, skills are unequally distributed by socio-economic status. Developing safety skills may encourage other skills, and more skills are associated with more activities online. So, teaching children to be safer need not curtail and may even encourage online opportunities.

This chapter is about the interrelationship between processes of coordination and communication in an economy. Economics as a theoretical perspective focuses on the explanation of processes of coordination between demand and supply decisions of individual subjects. Sociology as a theoretical perspective, however, focuses on the explanation of processes of communication between the principal groups that constitute society, including the economy. It will be shown that coordination will be less efficient in cases of ineffective communication. On the other hand, it is difficult to communicate fruitfully when the processes of coordination are inefficiently organised.key wordscoordinationcommunicationsocio-economics.

Striga and Orobanche seeds germinate in response to a host-derived germination stimulant. Dose-response curves of the synthetic strigolactone analogues GR 24 and Nijmegen 1 were determined, and their activities were compared to that of the naturally occurring stimulant sorgolactone.
