In the present study, synthesis, conformational behavior, host–guest complex formation, and electrochemical properties of novel 6-substituted-2-ureido-4-ferrocenylpyrimidines were explored. A comprehensive NMR spectroscopic investigation was carried out to confirm the structure and conformational equilibrium of the ureidopyrimidines through studying the temperature- and concentration dependence of NMR spectra. Low-temperature NMR measurements were used to clarify structural changes inflicted by a 2,6-diaminopyridine guest. Association constant (Kassoc) values of host–guest complexes were calculated based on low-temperature titrations. It was shown that the introduction of a pyridin-2-yl substituent in the pyrimidine ring in host 10 induced a considerable change not only in the conformational equilibrium of the host itself but also in that of the host–guest complex. Geometries and relative stabilities of the conformers of host 10 as well as its host–guest complexes were determined by quantum chemical calculations. Electrochemical behavior of ureidopyrimidine hosts and host–guest complexes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) measurements. Two ureidopyrimidine derivatives were immobilized on the surface of spectral graphite electrodes, and their electrochemical response on the addition of 2,6-diaminopyridine was compared. Imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines and especially their amide derivatives exhibit a wide range of favourable pharmacological properties. In this work, Pd-catalysed carbonylation was used for the first time for the introduction of the carboxamide moiety into positions 6 or 8. A recyclable Pd catalyst, with palladium immobilised on a supported ionic liquid phase decorated with pyridinium ions, was used efficiently for the conversion of 6- or 8-iodo derivatives to the products. In the case of 6-iodo derivatives, a competing mono- and double carbonylation could be observed in the reactions of aliphatic amines as nucleophiles, but under the proper choice of reaction conditions, good-to-excellent selectivities could be achieved towards either the corresponding amides or α-ketomides. The development of new chiral ligands with simple and modular structure represents a challenging direction in the design of efficient homogeneous transition metal catalysts. Herein, we report on the asymmetric hydrogenation of prochiral ketones catalyzed by the iridium complexes of simple alkane-diyl-based P,N,O-type chiral ligands with a highly modular structure. The role of (i) the P-N and N-O backbone in the potentially tridentate ligands, (ii) the number, position and relative configuration of their stereogenic elements and (iii) the effect of their NH and OH subunits on the activity and enantioselectivity of the catalytic reactions are studied. The systematic variation in the ligand structure and the comparative catalytic experiments shed light on different mechanistic aspects of the iridium-catalyzed reaction. The catalysts containing the simple alkane-diyl-based ligands with central chirality provided high enantioselectivities (up to 98% ee) under optimized reaction conditions and proved to be active and selective even at very high substrate concentrations (100 mmol substrate/mL solvent). New chiral phosphine‐amine‐ether (PNO) ligands of the general formula Ph2PCH(R1)(CH2)nCH(R1)N(R2)CH(R3)CH2OMe, where R1, R2, and R3 = H or Me, n = 0 or 1, and their ruthenium complexes of the type [RuCl2(PPh3)(PNO)] have been synthesized. The coordination compounds were characterized by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, modeled by DFT calculations, and in one case analyzed by X‐ray crystallography. The combined spectroscopic and theoretical investigations revealed that the relative configuration of the stereogenic elements in the P–N and N–O backbone represents a crucial factor in determining the conformation of the pincer‐type chelates and may also affect the configuration of the coordinated stereogenic nitrogen in the NH subunit, an essential element of stereochemical communication in outer sphere bifunctional catalysis. The new complexes were applied in the asymmetric hydrogenation of fused ring bicyclic ketones (i.e., 1‐tetralone and 4‐chromanone derivatives), a challenging substrate class, where enantioselectivities up to 97% could be obtained. Based on the spectroscopic and theoretical studies and catalytic experiments, structural features affecting the stereochemistry of the coordination could be identified and a qualitative enantioinduction model has been proposed. Titanium-dioxide-based semiconductors proved to be appropriate for photocatalytic application to efficiently degrade emerging organic pollutants such as various herbicides, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals in waters of environmental importance. The characterization of various TiO2 catalysts, both bare and modified (Ag- and/or N-doped), by mechanochemical treatment was carried out in this work, regarding their structure, morphology, and photocatalytic activity. For the latter investigations, carbamazepine, an antidepressant, proved to be applicable and versatile. The photocatalytic behavior of the catalysts was studied under both UV and visible light. Besides the decomposition efficiency, monitoring the intermediates provided information on the degradation mechanisms. Mechanochemical treatment significantly increased the particle size (from 30 nm to 10 μm), causing a considerable (0.14 eV) decrease in the band gap. Depending on the irradiation wavelength and the catalyst, the activity orders differed, indicating that, in the mineralization processes of carbamazepine, the importance of the different oxidizing radicals considerably deviated, e.g., Ag-TiO2 < DP25-TiO2 < ground-DP25-TiO2 < N-TiO2 ≈ N-Ag-TiO2 for O2•− and N-TiO2 ≈ Ag-TiO2 < N-Ag-TiO2 < ground-DP25-TiO2 ≈ DP25-TiO2 for HO• generation under UV irradiation. Toxicity studies have shown that the resulting intermediates are more toxic than the starting drug molecule, so full mineralization is required. The molecular geometry, electronic structure and electronic spectra and the energy levels of the molecular orbitals responsible for the photophysical characteristics of a series of solvent tunable [Ru(x,x′-dmb)(CN)4]2−complexes (where x,x′-dmb = x,x′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine) were calculated by density-functional theory-based quantum chemical methods, with the purpose of proposing for experimental study the best candidate for sensitizing electron- and energy transfer processes or for light induced structural changes in the molecule. The methods applied include geometry optimization using the B3LYP functional combination and various basis sets, time-dependent density functional theory with the B3LYP and PBE0 functionals, with and without explicit inclusion of coordinated solvent H2O molecules and the conductor-like polarizable continuum model for solvation. The accuracy of the theoretical predictions was tested by experiments: the model compounds have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic methods, such as 1H-NMR, UV-Vis absorption and emission spectroscopy and by cyclic voltammetry. Excellent correlation was found between the theoretically calculated and the experimentally determined photophysical and photochemical characteristics. The electronic transition energies measured in water are superbly reproduced by TD-PBE0 and well by TD-B3LYP, but the performance of both functionals is worse if the solvent is acetonitrile. The article presents a study investigating the association between the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR)-γ2 Pro12Ala polymorphism and the laboratory characteristics of carbohydrate metabolism in 79 obese children and adolescents. It reports that Ala allele carriers showed lower plasma glucose and insulin values than homozygous Pro allele carriers at the post-challenge (120 minutes) stage. It therefore suggests that the Ala allele may protect against the development of abnormal glucose homeostasis in childhood obesity.

Within the human MHC region larger stretches of conserved DNA, called conserved ancestral haplotypes exist. However, many MHC haplotypes contain only fragments of an ancestral haplotype. Little is known, however, on relative distribution of the ancestral haplotypes to their fragments. Therefore we determined the frequency of carriers of the whole ancestral haplotype 8.1 (AH8.1) and its fragments in 127 healthy Hungarian people, 101 healthy Ohioian females, and in nine Hungarian families. The HLA-DQ2, HLA-DR3(17), RAGE -429C allele, the mono-S-C4B genotype, the HSP70-2 1267G allele and the TNF -308A (TNF2) allele were used as markers of the AH8.1. Frequency of carriers of the whole AH8.1 and its fragments was similar in the both populations. 18% of the subjects carried the whole AH8.1 in at least one chromosome, while 17-20%, 36-39%, and 24-29%, respectively carried two or three constituents of the haplotype, only one constituent or none of them. Similar results were obtained in the family study. In addition, marked differences were found in the relationship of the constituents' alleles to the whole AH8.1. In both populations, 29%, 50-59%, 52-56% and 76-96%, respectively of the carriers of HSP70-2 1267G, RAGE-429C, TNF2, and mono-S carriers carried the whole 8.1 haplotype. A leiomyosarcoma originating from the pancreas of a 57-year-old man is presented. A 6×5×4 cm tumour was located in the head region, and the patient underwent surgical palliation. Immunohistochemical studies excluded an epithelial origin; a myogenic origin was suggested by strong vimentin and smooth muscle actin positivity. Flow cytometric analysis revealed an aneuploid pattern (DNA index: 1,561). The patient died with widespread metastases 7 month after the operation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Two new groups of p-chloro-, p-methoxy- and p-nitro-substituted derivatives of the trans,trans-isomers of 2,3-distyrylfuran have been synthesized by a sequence of reactions according to known methods. These new conjugated heterocyclic compounds along with the parent one and its methyl-derivative have been characterized spectrally, photophysically and photochemically. These compounds, except for the nitro-derivatives, display high fluorescence quantum yields in the non-polar n-hexane (Φ F =0.76–0.98). In ethanol of high polarity, the lifetime of their singlet excited state increases from 1.31–2.59ns to 2.01–4.77ns, significantly enhancing the quantum yield of their photochemical reaction from 0.02–0.24 to 0.25–0.46, and diminishing their fluorescence efficiency (Φ F =0.26–0.64). Deviating from the other compounds studied, the quantum yields for both the fluorescence and the photolysis of the nitro-derivatives are rather low (Φ F <10−4, Φ =0.025–0.042 in ethanol), probably due to an efficient intersystem crossing leading to a non-reactive triplet state. Accordingly, their singlet-state lifetime is also relatively short (τ F <0.3ns). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
