We model the evolution of a density shell propagating through the stellar wind of an early-type star, in order to investigate the effects of such shells on UV P Cygni line profiles. Unlike previous treatments, we solve the mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations, using an explicit time-differencing scheme, and present a parametric study of the density, velocity, and temperature response. Under the assumed conditions, relatively large spatial scale, large-amplitude density shells propagate as stable waves through the supersonic portion of the wind. Their dynamical behavior appears to mimic propagating 'solitary waves,' and they are found to accelerate at the same rate as the underlying steady state stellar wind (i.e., the shell rides the wind). These hydrodynamically stable structures quantitatively reproduce the anomalous 'discrete absorption component' (DAC) behavior observed in the winds of luminous early-type stars, as illustrated by comparisons of model predictions to an extensive International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) time series of spectra of zeta Puppis (O4f). From these comparisons, we find no conclusive evidence indicative of DACs accelerating at a significantly slower rate than the underlying stellar wind, contrary to earlier reports. In addition, these density shells are found to be consistent within the constraints set by the IR observations. We conclude that the concept of propagating density shells should be seriously reconsidered as a possible explanation of the DAC phenomenon in early-type stars.

The results of previous investigations of low Mach number MHD density fluctuations and associated dynamical structure of nearly compressible polytropic MHD are reviewed. The recipe for computing 'pseudosound' density fluctuations is generalized to give rise to formulas expressing the density spectrum in terms of the incompressible field variables in homogeneous MHD turbulence with arbitrary rotational symmetry and with arbitrary magnetic and cross helicity spectra. The known observational consequences of the polytropic theory are summarized and several tests of the theory using Voyager data are presented. Finally, compressible two-dimensional MHD simulation results are presented which appear to have a direct bearing on interpretation of the observations.

Voyager 2 magnetic field and plasma data are examined over time intervals of 1 to 12 hours in the heliospheric range of 1 to 10 AU to study the evolution of the anisotropy of solar wind fluctuations. Consistent with previous results, the directions of minimum variance vectors of magnetic fluctuations are found to be close to the mean magnetic field direction with an increasing component along the field at larger scales. At large radial distances there is more spread in the minimum variance directions than at smaller radial distances. The power in smaller-scale fluctuations in the magnetic field components perpendicular to the local mean field B(0) is in the ratio of about 5:1 near 1 AU at the scale of 1 hour but decreases to about 3:1 further out. No evidence for selective enhancement of out-of-the-ecliptic components of fluctuations is found. In contrast to results for field fluctuations, analysis of velocity fluctuations shows that the minimum variance direction systematically remains more radially oriented and becomes increasingly less oriented along B(0) with increasing heliocentric distance. The velocity fluctuations are generally more isotropic than the magnetic fluctuations. The observations cannot be explained by a superposed wave picture, and thus are consistent with the view that nonlinear turbulent evolution is responsible for the anisotropy in the fluctuations.

This paper presents observations of the radial and latitudinal variations of the interplanetary magnetic field measured by the Voyager 1 (V1) and Voyager 2 (V2) spacecraft from mid-1977 to mid-1985. Observations of the radial variation of the large-scale magnetic field strength in the ecliptic agree with the predictions of Parker's (1958, 1963) model when temporal variations in the magnetic field and bulk speed are taken into account. The latitudinal variation of the magnetic field observed by V1 is in agreement with the predictions of Parker's model to first approximation. The magnetic field strength at higher latitudes is somewhat lower than expected on the basis of observations made in the ecliptic, but this could be due to an increase in bulk speed and/or a decrease of solar magnetic field strength with latitude. Fluctuations in the strength of the magnetic field are small compared to the large-scale field itself, and they decrease in amplitude with increasing distance approximately as R exp -1/4 . Fluctuations in the components are relatively large, and they make a significant contribution to the mean field that is not described by Parker's model.
