1. Cell-free supernatants from plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria Bacillus albus strains control Aspergillus flavus disease in peanut and maize seedlings

Abstract: Abstract Background Aspergillus flavus, a seed-borne fungal pathogen, colonizes host plants and exploits nutrients, hindering the growth of seedlings such as peanut and maize. This study investigates the effectiveness of cell-free supernatants (CFSs) from the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Bacillus albus strains NNK24 and NDP61, which belong to the Bacillus cereus group, in suppressing A. flavus AF1. Results The antifungal activity of these CFSs was attributed to their surfactant properties and chemical composition. These were characterized using rapid chemical assays and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadrupole time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-QTOF/MS), combined with bioinformatic tools such as Global Natural Product Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) and Natural Products Atlas (NPAtlas). Identified putative antifungal compounds included two diketopiperazines (cyclo(Pro-Leu) and cyclo(2-hydroxy-Pro-Leu)), four macrolactins (7-O-succinyl macrolactin A, 7-O-methyl-5′-hydroxy-3′-heptenoate-macrolactin, macrolactin B, and macrolactin C), two siderophores (petrobactin and bacillibactin), and three cyclic lipopeptides (kurstakin 1, 2 or 3, and 4). These compounds are hypothesized to act synergistically via multiple mechanisms, including disruption of fungal membranes, iron capture, direct antibiosis, and triggering plant immunity. Both CFSs strongly suppressed the harmful effects of A. flavus AF1 and seed-borne A. flavus on peanut and maize seedlings, reducing disease incidence (DI) and disease severity index (DSI) compared to controls. The disease control efficacy (DCE) of the CFSs was comparable to that of the commercial fungicide. Additionally, the CFSs enhanced seed germination, vigor, seedling length, and weight in both peanut and maize. Vigor index (VI) values increased by 222.4–286.0% in peanuts and 181.7–216.4% in maize at 7 days after treatment (DAT). Conclusion CFSs of B. albus NNK24 and NDP61 show significant potential as bioprotective agents for sustainable agriculture. Importantly, their use eliminates the need for live bacterial cells from the B. cereus group, addressing biosafety concerns. Graphical abstract

Abstract: Background: The COVID-19 pandemic in Bulgaria was characterized by a high mortality rate and vaccination efforts yielded suboptimal results. Understanding population immunity is important as new SARS-CoV-2 variants continue to emerge. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the general population of Bulgaria and examine demographic variations in antibody presence. Materials and methods: In December 2023, 1895 serum samples were randomly collected from healthy individuals across all 28 provinces. Samples were tested for SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-specific IgG antibodies using ELISA method. A subset of the positive samples was subsequently tested for neutralizing antibodies. Seroprevalence was analyzed by sex, age group, and geographic region. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS v.26. Results: Overall seroprevalence was 91.9%, with similar rates between males (91.6%) and females (92.0%). Seroprevalence was highest in the 18-39 age group (95.1%) and lowest in those over 65 (89.3%). Regional seroprevalence ranged from 80.0% to 98.3%. Among samples tested for presence of neutralizing antibodies, 90.5% were positive, indicating effective immune response. Conclusions: The high seroprevalence suggests widespread prior exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and/or vaccination among the Bulgarian population. The strong presence of neutralizing antibodies might provide potential protection against severe disease. Targeted interventions towards older age groups could be appropriate in order to sustain immunity as COVID-19 remains a public health concern.

3. Serological Assessment of Lyme borreliosis in Bulgaria: A Nationwide Study

Abstract: Lyme borreliosis (LB), a tick-borne infection caused by bacteria in the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex, is increasingly prevalent on the Balkan Peninsula, including Bulgaria, where it is the most common tick-borne disease. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of LB across Bulgaria by analyzing 1892 serum samples for specific IgG antibodies using a two-tier testing protocol involving an ELISA and immunoblot methods. The results revealed an overall seroprevalence rate of 5.4%, with significant variation based on age, sex, and residence. Seroprevalence increased with age, peaking at 8.4% in individuals over 65 years. Males had a seroprevalence of 8.4% compared to 3.3% in females, and rural residents showed higher seroprevalence (10.2%) compared to urban residents (4.4%). Regional analysis indicated that seroprevalence ranged from 0.0% to 20.0%, with higher rates in northern provinces such as Gabrovo (18.9%) and Targovishte (20.0%). This study highlights the importance of two-step testing protocols for accurate diagnosis and underscores the need for increased awareness and further research to enhance public health measures and the management of LB in Bulgaria.

Abstract: Background: In the response to the current COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2, one of the groups at higher risk were healthcare workers (HCWs), especially those who worked on the frontline. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG antibodies (seropositivity) in certain populations provides better understanding of virus circulation and transmission. Our aim was to study the seroprevalence rates of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among a group of healthcare workers before and after vaccination/COVID-19 infection. Material and Methods: We determined the presence of SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG and IgA antibodies against S-antigen of by ELISA method. In this study, we enrolled 74 healthcare workers and three months later, 48 of the participants were followed up. At the baseline, none of the participants was vaccinated or had suffered COVID-19. Results: SARS-Cov-2 specific IgG antibodies were found in 32.4% of the participants. Higher prevalence of class IgA antibodies – 44.6% was detected. All samples that were IgG seropositive were also positive or borderline for IgA antibodies. Overall, virus-specific antibodies were not detected in 40.6% of HCWs in the group. During the follow-up (after vaccination and/or COVID-19 infection) high rates of both IgG and IgA seroprevalence were established. 5. Antibody dynamics and viral load in COVID-19: differences in mild, moderate and severe cases

Abstract: In this study, we investigated the potential association between the severity of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) and nasopharyngeal viral loads or serum antibody levels and evaluate the temporal dynamics of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). Using ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), we determined the presence of IgA, IgM and IgG antibodies in 450 serum samples from 122 patients for a period of 9 months after disease onset. Viral burden was quantified by RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) in 270 nasopharyngeal swab samples from 122 patients for a period of 4 weeks after the onset of the symptoms. Higher antibody values were generally seen in patients with moderate and severe disease compared to patients with mild COVID-19. Significant differences were established in IgA and IgG antibody levels at weeks 3–4 and 5–13 after the disease onset. In all severity groups, seroconversion rates were high and a similar pattern was observed with IgM antibodies quickly decreasing after reaching peak levels and IgA and IgG antibodies persisting at high values up to 9 months. The mean viral loads were higher in the mild group during the first 2 weeks and in the moderate and severe groups later on. However, the differences were not statistically significant. The IgA and IgG antibody response was significantly stronger in patients with moderate/severe disease around the time of peak antibody production as well as in vaccinated patients. No definitive association between viral load levels and the severity of COVID-19 was observed.

6. A study of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among healthcare personnel and the general population

Abstract: Bulgaria, like many other countries, has experienced the far-reaching consequences of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Seroprevalence studies serve as a crucial method for assessing the exposure and immunity levels within a population. In this serosurvey, which is the first of this kind conducted in Bulgaria, we enrolled 104 healthcare workers (HCWs) from one front-line Bulgarian hospital and 237 individuals from the general population. Serum samples were collected in December 2021 from the general population and in February 2023 from HCWs and the general population. The presence of four anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was evaluated: anti-Spike 1-IgG, anti-Nucleoprotein-IgG, anti-Spike1-IgA and anti-Recombinant binding domain neutralizing antibodies. Our results showed high percentages of seropositivity in both the HCWs and the general population (99% and 78%, respectively) in February 2023. HCWs had significantly higher mean IgA and mean anti-S1-IgG antibody levels compared to the general population. The seropositivity in the general population in December 2021 was 79%. The mean levels of IgA and anti-NCP-IgG were significantly higher, whereas the mean anti-S1-IgG levels were significantly lower in February 2023 compared to December 2021. We found a strong correlation between neutralizing antibodies and anti-S1-IgA and anti-S1-IgG antibodies for all tested groups. It is necessary to perform large-scale serosurveys to provide analysis of the seroprevalence in a larger population and its dynamics over time and to facilitate evidence-based strategies that will safeguard the health and well-being of the Bulgarian population and contribute to the global efforts in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

7. Non-financial factors affecting the operational performance of hospitality companies: Evidence from Vietnam

Abstract: Non-financial factors including quality of services, the flexibility of a company, utilization of resources, and market orientation are regarded as significant determinants that enhance the profitability-based performance of a service company or a hotel. The study investigated the interaction between these factors and hotel operating performance measured by the hospitality performance and results indicators. Data on 346 executives of Vietnam’s hospitality companies were collected. A structural equation modeling (SEM) method was utilized to examine the positive-direct and moderating effects of non-financial factors on hotel performance in terms of occupancy rate (OCR), average daily rate (ADR), and the revenue per available room (RevPAR). The findings showed that service quality ( = 0.118, p < 0.05), flexibility ( = 0.173, p < 0.05) and resource utilization (= 0.172, p < 0.05) positively affected the performance of Vietnam’s hospitality companies. Meanwhile, innovation showed no direct influence (p = 0.068) but an indirect impact on the performance through service quality ( = 0.311, p < 0.05). Market orientation did not impact the performance (p = 0.076) but it positively affected both innovation ( = 0.322, p < 0.05) and service quality ( = 0.146, p < 0.05). The study contributed to a theoretical enhancement of the current level of knowledge on the factors that affect the performance and developed a reliable scale for measuring the performance of hotels in Vietnam.

8. Investigation of the water states of poly(styrene sulfonic acid) grafted poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) copolymer using FT-IR analysis

Abstract: The water states of poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) grafted poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) copolymers (ETFE-PEMs) with grafting degree (GD)=8.8-30.5% are investigated under ambient conditions by using FTIR analysis. Detailed analysis of the FT-IR spectra of ETFE-PEMs allows the observation of each component of water in the two broad bands of 1500-2000 cm-1 and 2400-3800 cm-1. These components include protonated water (H3O+…(H2O)n), H-bonded water to sulfonic acid groups ((SO3)…(H3O+)(H2O)n), H-bonded water to other water molecules ((H2O)…(H2O)), and non-H-bonded water (HOH…F). Of these water forms, ((SO3)…(H3O+)(H2O)n) is predominantly represented. Free water (non-H-bonded water) is assumed to be trapped in the holes of the ETFE backbone and is thus difficult to remove at 50oC over a 24 h period. The total peak areas of the water molecules significantly increase with GD indicating that the ETFE-PEM with higher GD possesses higher water content. Moreover, the increase of the total peak area with GD via two steps reveals an interesting relationship between the hierarchical structures and the capacity of water content under ambient conditions. The observed water content at ambient conditions can significantly affect the conductance of ETFE-PEMs under conditions of low relative humidity such as during fuel cell operation or measurement procedures of specific characterisations or testing methods.

Abstract: A high-performance non-volatile memory with low power consumption for long battery life and for large data storage is one of the key requirements of the wearable and other electronic Internet of Things (IoT) devices. In this study, we have fabricated and investigated the resistive switching behavior of an RRAM device using the nanocomposite of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and graphene oxide (GO) as the switching layer in a hybrid Ag/PVA–GO/FTO structure. The resistive switching behavior of the hybrid Ag/PVA–GO/FTO device depends on the GO amount in the PVA–GO matrix. The optical analysis depicts the good interaction through the hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl group (–OH) of PVA and CO of GO which play an important role in lowering the power consumption (sweeping voltage −0.5 V to +0.5 V, VSET = −0.28 V, VRESET = 0.34 V, switching ratio ION/IOFF = 104) and switching mechanism of the hybrid Ag/PVA–0.5 wt% GO/FTO device compared to the Ag/PVA/FTO, Ag/GO/FTO and Ag/PVA–1.0 wt% GO/FTO devices. The electrical conduction mechanism is found dominant by the SCLC and the Ohm's law corresponding to the high and low resistance states in which the combination of the trap filling and the delocalization of electrons within π bonding rings switch the device from the high to the low resistance state.

Abstract: Background: Aspergillus flavus, a seed-borne fungal pathogen, colonizes host plants and exploits nutrients, hindering the growth of seedlings such as peanut and maize. This study investigates the effectiveness of cell-free supernatants (CFSs) from the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Bacillus albus strains NNK24 and NDP61, which belong to the Bacillus cereus group, in suppressing A. flavus AF1. Results: The antifungal activity of these CFSs was attributed to their surfactant properties and chemical composition. These were characterized using rapid chemical assays and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadrupole time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-QTOF/MS), combined with bioinformatic tools such as Global Natural Product Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) and Natural Products Atlas (NPAtlas). Identified putative antifungal compounds included two diketopiperazines (cyclo(Pro-Leu) and cyclo(2-hydroxy-Pro-Leu)), four macrolactins (7-O-succinyl macrolactin A, 7-O-methyl-5′-hydroxy-3′-heptenoate-macrolactin, macrolactin B, and macrolactin C), two siderophores (petrobactin and bacillibactin), and three cyclic lipopeptides (kurstakin 1, 2 or 3, and 4). These compounds are hypothesized to act synergistically via multiple mechanisms, including disruption of fungal membranes, iron capture, direct antibiosis, and triggering plant immunity. Both CFSs strongly suppressed the harmful effects of A. flavus AF1 and seed-borne A. flavus on peanut and maize seedlings, reducing disease incidence (DI) and disease severity index (DSI) compared to controls. The disease control efficacy (DCE) of the CFSs was comparable to that of the commercial fungicide. Additionally, the CFSs enhanced seed germination, vigor, seedling length, and weight in both peanut and maize. Vigor index (VI) values increased by 222.4–286.0% in peanuts and 181.7–216.4% in maize at 7 days after treatment (DAT). Conclusion: CFSs of B. albus NNK24 and NDP61 show significant potential as bioprotective agents for sustainable agriculture. Abstract: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are closely linked to factors such as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), often caused by mutations in low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) and apolipoprotein B (APOB). Through a comprehensive bioinformatic analysis, we identified novel LDLR and APOB mutations and their cardiovascular disease (CVD) implications, focusing on unique variants in the Vietnamese population. We used homology modeling to predict protein structures; in addition, through protein-protein molecular docking, we assessed how these mutations affect binding affinities. We identified 10 novel binding residues exclusive to the wild-type and precursor LDLR isoforms, including ASP-47, GLY-48, and GLU-51. Analyses of 154 complexes revealed 5 isoforms with low binding affinities and notable hydrogen-bonding interactions—APOB (Arg3527Trp)-LDLR (Cys318Arg), APOB (His3583Leu)-LDLR (Cys104Tyr), APOB wild-LDLR (Glu228Lys), APOB (Phe2469Cys)-LDLR (Glu288Lys), and APOB wild-LDLR (Ser130Ter). These results suggest strong and potentially detrimental interactions among these proteins. Furthermore, they highlight the molecular mechanisms underlying CVD development, reveal potential therapeutic targets, enhance our understanding of genetic variations, and could guide FH research. Abstract: Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) remains a major cause of gastroduodenal diseases. We aimed to evaluate the burden of this infection, particularly peptic ulcer disease in Vietnamese children. Methods: We enrolled consecutive children referred for esophagogastroduodenoscopy at two tertiary children’s hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, from October 2019 to May 2021. Children treated with proton pump inhibitors during the last two weeks or antibiotics for four weeks, and those having a previous or interventional endoscopy were excluded. H. pylori infection was diagnosed with either a positive culture or positive histopathology combined with a rapid urease test, or with a polymerase chain reaction of the urease gene. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee and written informed consent/assent was obtained. Results: Among 336 enrolled children aged 4–16 (mean: 9.1 ± 2.4 years; 55.4% girls), H. pylori infection was positive in 80%. Peptic ulcers were detected in 65 (19%), increasing with age, and 25% with anemia. cagA+ strains were detected at a higher rate in children with ulcers. Conclusions: Prevalence of H. pylori and peptic ulcers is high among symptomatic Vietnamese children. It is crucial to have a program for early detection of H. pylori to reduce ulcer risk and gastric cancer later.

Abstract: Momordica charantia, a popular edible plant in Vietnam, has been used to support the treatment of several diseases. This work aimed to investigate the total phenolic contents (TPCs), antioxidant capacity, and saponin content of Momordica charantia leaf extracts using the maceration method. The effects of extraction conditions, including material/liquid ratios (1/10, 1/15, 1/20, 1/25, and 1/30 g/mL), extraction time (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 mins), and extraction temperature (60, 70, 80, and 90 °C) were investigated. The results demonstrate that the most favorable extraction parameters were a solid/liquid ratio of 1:20 g/mL for 20 mins at 70°C. Moreover, the obtained extracts were rich in phenolic compounds (TPCs of up to 26.7 mg GAE/g as the highest) and performed high 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (IC50 of 29.2 mg/g). Abstract: Background: In developing countries, fewer women have access to multidisciplinary congenital heart disease and reproductive programs staffed by experts. We report pregnancy outcomes of a multidisciplinary healthcare strategy utilizing an in-hospital teamwork approach in Vietnam. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included pregnant women with unrepaired congenital heart disease managed at a referral cardiovascular center. Results: Undiagnosed congenital heart disease before pregnancy, a lack of pre-pregnancy cardiology counseling, and modified World Health Organization class III/IV were common. Under the multispecialty healthcare strategy, although the rate of maternal death was 8.2% in the modified World Health Organization class IV group, no deaths occurred in any other group. Fetal/neonatal complications occurred in 54% of pregnancies, and 49.4% of neonates survived. Poor pregnancy outcomes were associated with admission during the first/seconde trimester for fetus/neonates, third trimester for mother, modified World Health Organization class III/IV, cyanosis, and heart failure. Conclusion: The outcomes of pregnant women with unrepaired congenital heart disease were poor but seemed to improve with a multidisciplinary in-hospital healthcare teamwork strategy. Abstract: Tecoma stans (L.) Juss. Ex Kunth is widely used in folk medicine. In ethnomedicine, it is applied as a cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, antiarthritic, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial. The aqueous extract is considered antidiabetic, and is used as a traditional remedy in Mexico. More than 120 chemical constituents have been identified in its leaves, barks, and roots. However, less is known about the phytochemical properties of T. stans flower extracts. The herbal plant Nervilia concolor (Blume) Schltr. is native to Vietnam, and is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat diseases such as bronchitis, stomatitis, acute pneumonia, and laryngitis. Only two previous reports have addressed the chemical content of this plant. Bouea macrophylla Griff., commonly known as marian plum or plum mango, is a tropical plant that is used to treat a range of illnesses. Phytochemical analysis of B. macrophylla suggests the presence of volatile components and flavonoids. However, existing data have been obtained from screening without isolation. As part of our ongoing search for alpha-glucosidase inhibitors from Vietnamese medicinal plants, we conducted bioactive-guided isolation of the whole plant N. concolor, the flowers of T. stans, and the leaves of B. macrophylla. We isolated and structurally elucidated five known compounds from T. stans: ursolic acid (TS1), 3-oxours-12-en-28-oic acid (TS2), chrysoeriol (TS3), ferulic acid (TS4), and tecomine (TS5). Three known compounds were isolated from Nervilia concolor: astragalin (NC1), isoquercitrin (NC2), and caffeic acid (NC3). From B. macrophylla, betullinic acid (BM1), methyl gallate (BM2), and 3-O-galloyl gallic acid methyl ester (BM3) were isolated. All compounds showed promising alpha-glucosidase inhibition, with IC50 values ranging from 1.4 to 143.3 µM. The kinetics of enzyme inhibition showed BM3 to be a competitive-type inhibitor. An in silico molecular docking model confirmed that compounds NC1, NC2, and BM3 were potential inhibitors of the α-glucosidase enzyme. Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out with compound BM3 demonstrating the best docking model during simulation up to 100 ns to explore the stability of the complex ligand–protein.

Abstract: Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) remains a major cause of gastroduodenal diseases. We aimed to evaluate the burden of this infection, particularly peptic ulcer disease in Vietnamese children. Methods: We enrolled consecutive children referred for esophagogastroduodenoscopy at two tertiary children’s hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, from October 2019 to May 2021. Children treated with proton pump inhibitors during the last two weeks or antibiotics for four weeks, and those having a previous or interventional endoscopy were excluded. H. pylori infection was diagnosed with either a positive culture or positive histopathology combined with a rapid urease test, or with a polymerase chain reaction of the urease gene. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee and written informed consent/assent was obtained. Results: Among 336 enrolled children aged 4–16 (mean: 9.1 ± 2.4 years; 55.4% girls), H. pylori infection was positive in 80%. Peptic ulcers were detected in 65 (19%), increasing with age, and 25% with anemia. cagA+ strains were detected at a higher rate in children with ulcers. Conclusions: Prevalence of H. pylori and peptic ulcers is high among symptomatic Vietnamese children. It is crucial to have a program for early detection of H. pylori to reduce ulcer risk and gastric cancer later.

Abstract: Background: Antibiotic resistance of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is increasing worldwide, with geographical variations, impacting the treatment outcomes. This study assessed the antibiotic resistance patterns of H. pylori in Vietnamese children. Materials and Methods: Symptomatic children undergoing gastroduodenoscopy at two tertiary Children's Hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City were recruited. Antral and corpus biopsies were obtained and cultured separately. Susceptibility to amoxicillin (AMO), clarithromycin (CLA), metronidazole (MET), levofloxacin (LEV), and tetracycline (TET) was determined using E‐test. Polymerase chain reaction was performed on another antral biopsy to detect the urease gene, cytotoxin‐associated gene A (cagA), vacuolating cytotoxin A (vacA) genotypes, and 23S rRNA mutations conferring CLA resistance. Results: Among 123 enrolled children, a high primary resistance rate was found for CLA (68.5%, 61/89), followed by LEV (55.1%), MET (31.5%), AMO (25.8%), and TET (1.1%). Secondary resistance rates were 82.1% (7/28), 71.4%, 53.6%, and 3.6% for CLA, LEV, MET, and TET, respectively. Multidrug resistance was frequent (67.7%), with common patterns including CLA + LEV (20.3%) and CLA + MTZ + LEV (15.2%). Heteroresistance was detected in eight children (6.5%). The A2143G mutation was detected in 97.5% (119/122) of children. 86.1% of children had positive cagA strains and 27.9% had multiple vacA genotypes. No factor was significantly associated with antibiotic resistance. Conclusions: The alarming rate of antibiotic resistance for H. pylori, especially for CLA, with emerging multi‐ and hetero‐resistant strains, pose a major treatment challenge that precludes CLA use as empirical therapy. Abstract: Rabbit sperm are known to undergo damage during both cryopreservation and thawing, leading to decreased viability, motility and membrane integrity. Glycine can protect sperm and reduce damage during freezing. Swim-up is a simple semen processing method for selecting good motile sperm. The study evaluated the effect of the swim-up method and glycine with different concentrations supplemented to the frozen medium. Three indigenous black rabbits were selected for semen collection by artificial vagina. Next, semen was selected by swim-up method and diluted with glycine-added frozen medium. The samples were then transferred to 0.5 mL straws, cooled to 15°C and 5°C, placed in liquid nitrogen vapour, and finally placed directly into liquid nitrogen (-196°C). The samples were thawed and evaluated for sperm quality. The results showed that the medium supplemented with 10mM glycine in combination with swim-up method for 30 min gave the best results and was significantly different from the remaining concentrations (P<0.01), with viability rate, overall mobility and membrane integrity of 68.0%, 58.7% and 49.7%, respectively. In conclusion, 10 mM glycine concentration combined with swim-up for 30 min is the optimal choice for freezing local black rabbit semen. The study highlights the importance of optimising freezing protocols to improve the quality of frozen rabbit sperm, which can have important implications for animal breeding and conservation efforts. Abstract: Starch-based bioplastics offer a promising alternative to conventional plastics. However, they exhibit certain limitations, notably in terms of mechanical strength and barrier properties. These challenges could potentially be addressed through the incorporation of nanocellulose as a reinforcing agent. In this study, we fabricated bioplastic films using a casting and blending approach, employing highly linear pure amylose (AM) in combination with cellulose nanofibers (CNF) or cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) at various ratios. This allowed for a direct comparison of CNF and CNC functionality within the AM matrix. We systematically assessed mechanical properties and water barrier characteristics, encompassing parameters such as water permeability, moisture content, swelling, solubility, crystallinity, thermal stability, transmittance, and opacity. Additionally, we investigated water vapor and oxygen permeability. Furthermore, we delved into distinctions between CNC and CNF biocomposites. Incorporation of either type of nanocellulose yielded enhancements in film properties, with CNF exerting a more pronounced positive influence compared to CNC. Particularly noteworthy were the mechanical properties, wherein CNF composite films demonstrated markedly higher tensile strength and Young's modulus compared to their CNC counterparts. For instance, the inclusion of 1% CNF led to a substantial increase in AM tensile strength from 66.1 MPa to 144.8 MPa. Conversely, water vapor permeability exhibited a converse behavior, as the addition of 1% CNF resulted in a significant reduction of water barrier properties from 8.7 to 1.32 g mm m−2 24 h−1kPa−1. Intriguingly, CNC films displayed greater elongation at the point of rupture in comparison to CNF films. This can be attributed to the larger surface area of the CNC and the favorable interfacial interaction between AM and CNC. Notably, the introduction of nanocellulose led to reduced film opacity and improved thermal stability. In summary, nanocellulose interacted synergistically with the AM matrix, establishing a robust hydrogen-bonded network that greatly enhanced the performance of the biocomposite films. Abstract: α-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanoplates and nanorices were synthesized by hydrothermal reaction and used for organic pollutant adsorption and removal studies. The effect of size and morphology of α-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanoplates and nanorices on the dye adsorption efficiency were investigated systematically. The adsorption studies showed a good selectivity and high adsorption capacity (~93%) of the α-Fe2O3 nanoplates towards congo red (C.R.) dye, due to the formation of hydrogen bonding between amine group (─ NH2) of C.R. and surface carboxylate group (─ COOH), and adsorbed ─ OH groups of α-Fe2O3 nanoplates. The α-Fe2O3 nanoplates also showed excellent recyclability with negligible loss of the adsorption capacity, owing to their stable morphology and crystal structure. The excellent C.R. adsorption capacity of the α-Fe2O3 nanoplates was further confirmed by conducting experiments with a solution containing a mixture of dyes. Our findings indicate that the synthesized α-Fe2O3 nanoplates have a great potential in removing industrial waste, such as C.R. from polluted water.

Abstract: Background and Aims: Recent studies have highlighted the increased risk of low bone mineral density (BMD) in adults with cardiovascular disease. However, little is known about BMD in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD), particularly in developing countries. We hypothesized that factors related to BMD would lead to a high prevalence of low BMD in adults with CHD. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of low BMD and its related factors in Vietnamese adults with CHD. Methods: We conducted a cross‐sectional study of 73 adults diagnosed with CHD in Vietnam. Low BMD was classified based on their site‐specific Z‐scores and T‐scores at the posteroanterior lumbar spine and left proximal femur. Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate factors related to low BMD. Results: Low BMD was confirmed in one‐third of the adults with CHD. There were trends of more bone loss in certain parts of the body than in others, with the prevalence of low BMD at the sites of the lumbar vertebrae (L1‒L4) and left proximal femur (femoral neck, trochanteric femur, and intertrochanteric area) of 43.9%, 31.8%, 28.8%, 33.3%, 8.8%, 1.5%, and 6.1%, respectively. The prevalence of low BMD in the lumbar spine was significantly higher than that in the left proximal femur (34.3% vs. 2.9%, p < 0.001). Moreover, the prevalence of low BMD was significantly higher in adults with CHD than in those without polycythemia and vitamin D deficiency (55.6% vs. 20.9%, p = 0.001 and 46.2% vs. 19.4%, p = 0.002, respectively). A stratified multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that low BMD was associated with polycythemia (odds ratio: 4.72; 95% confidence interval: 1.64–13.58, p = 0.004). 48. (In)definiteness and Vietnamese classifiers

Abstract: Vietnamese numeral classifiers (CL) in the bare classifier construction [CL+N] can be interpreted as definite and as indefinite. Based on a corpus of written and oral texts with a broad range of different contexts for the potential use of classifiers, this paper aims at a better understanding of the factors and linguistic contexts which determine the use of the classifier in [CL+N] and its specific functions. The following results will be presented: (a) Even though classifiers tend to be interpreted as definite, they are also used as indefinites, irrespective of word order (subject/preverbal or object/postverbal). (b) There is a strong tendency to use the [CL+N] construction with definite animate nouns in the subject position, while bare nouns [N] preferably occur with indefinite inanimate nouns in the object position. (c) The vast majority of nouns occurring with a classifier are sortal nouns with the features [−unique, −relational]. (d) Discourse and information structure are the most prominent factors which determine the grammar of Vietnamese classifiers. The influence of discourse is reflected in the pragmatic definiteness expressed by the classifier. Moreover, information structure enhances the use of a classifier in contexts of contrastive topic, contrastive focus and focus particles. Finally, thetic statements and some special constructions (existential clauses, verbs and situations of appearance) provide the environment for the indefinite interpretation of classifiers. &nbsp

49. Quality Assessment During the Fermentation of Cocoa Beans: Effects of Partial Mucilage Removal.

Abstract: Fermentation of cocoa beans is the most important process contributing to the flavor in chocolate and other related products. The present study aimed to investigate the fermentation at a laboratory scale of cocoa beans with and without 10% w/w mucilage removal (whole beans). The physicochemical properties and microorganism development were monitored for six days of continuous fermentation (sampling was conducted every 24 hours). The results indicated the effects of partial mucilage removal of cocoa beans before the fermentation, in which the temperature, pH, and mucilage content (with/without mucilage removal) were recorded as 36.5 °C/38.6 °C, 3.44/3.31, and 18.41%/21.84%, respectively at the final day. Besides, the density of microorganisms (yeastmold, lactic acid bacteria, and acetic acid bacteria) of cocoa beans with partial mucilage removal was higher than whole cocoa beans due to the increased aeration of the beans with mucilage removal, creating favorable conditions for the growth of microorganisms. After the fermentation, several physicochemical properties of the two cocoa bean types were compared, which demonstrated the more favorable quality of the cocoa beans with partial mucilage removal compared to the whole cocoa beans for the fermentation, e.g., lower seed shell content (14.1% vs. 17.8%), lower total acid (1.67% vs. 2.77%), and pH of around 5.0. 50. Effect of Cation Exchange Time on the Morphology and Photoactivity of CdS/Ag2S Composites for Ciprofloxacin Degradation.

Abstract: Herein, the effect of reaction time in the cationic exchange method on the CdS/Ag2S structure and photocatalytic activity is investigated. A hydrothermal approach is used to produce CdS nanorods, and then a cation exchange method is applied to synthesize CdS/Ag2S composites. The heterostructure between CdS and Ag2S is determined by the X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies. Comparing pure CdS NRs and CdS/Ag2S by the UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra data, the introduction of Ag2S is proven to enhance the light absorption in visible region. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method indicates that CdS and CdS/Ag2S are mesopore materials and the specific surface areas of CdS, CdS/Ag2S‐15, CdS/Ag2S‐30, and CdS/Ag2S‐60 samples without and with a cation‐exchange reaction time of 15, 30, and 60 min are 305, 900, 187, and 52 m2 g−1, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of CdS/Ag2S is examined through the ciprofloxacin photodegradation. The ciprofloxacin degradation rate increases with the introduction of CdS and reached a maximum value of 60% within 180 min for CdS/Ag2S‐15 under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 1.5 times greater than that of pure CdS. The ciprofloxacin degradation rate decreases as the cation‐exchange reaction time is increased to 60 min (26% after 180 min illumination). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
