Summary: Branchial arches are embryologic structures that develop between the fourth and seventh gestational week. Anomalies may form if these structures fail to develop. The majority of cases are diagnosed during childhood, with surgical excision recommended to prevent risk of infection, growth or malignancy. We report an unusual case of a 72‐year‐old man with severe cardiac comorbidities who presented with a large second branchial arch cyst extending into the oropharynx. General anaesthesia to facilitate surgical excision was deemed too risky. Therefore, we performed successful ultrasound‐guided superficial and deep cervical plexus blocks as a sole mode of anaesthesia. This case highlights how regional anaesthesia can be utilised to facilitate surgery in high‐risk patients, as well as presenting an alternative for general anaesthesia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim To assess the efficacy, safety and tolerability of beloranib treatment for obesity. Methods This phase II, double-blind, randomized study investigated the effects of beloranib suspension (0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 mg) or placebo, administered subcutaneously, for 12 weeks in 147 participants (primarily white women) with obesity. No diet or exercise advice was administered. Results At week 12, beloranib resulted in dose-dependent progressive weight loss of −5.5 ± 0.5, −6.9 ± 0.6 and −10.9 ± 1.1 kg for the 0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 mg beloranib doses, respectively, compared with −0.4 ± 0.4 kg with placebo (all p < 0.0001 vs placebo). Weight loss with beloranib was associated with corresponding reductions in waist circumference and body fat mass, as well as improvements in lipids, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and blood pressure. Sleep disturbance and gastrointestinal adverse events were more common with beloranib than with placebo; these were generally mild to moderate, transient and dose-related, and led to more early study withdrawals in participants in the group with the highest dose of beloranib. Conclusions In this 12-week phase II study, beloranib produced clinically and statistically significant weight loss and corresponding improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors. Beloranib appeared safe, and the 0.6 and 1.2 mg doses were generally well tolerated. The 2.4 mg dose was associated with increased sleep latency and mild to moderate gastrointestinal adverse events over the first month of treatment. Objective: Evaluate the safety and tolerability of beloranib, a fumagillin-class methionine aminopetidase-2 (MetAP2) inhibitor, in obese women over 4 weeks. Design and Methods: Thirty-one obese (mean BMI 38 kg/m2) women were randomized to intravenous 0.1, 0.3, or 0.9 mg/m2 beloranib or placebo twice weekly for 4 weeks ( N = 7, 6, 9, and 9). Results: The most frequent AEs were headache, infusion site injury, nausea, and diarrhea. Nausea and infusion site injury occurred more with beloranib than placebo. The most common reason for discontinuation was loss of venous access. There were no clinically significant abnormal laboratory findings. In subjects completing 4 weeks, median weight loss with 0.9 mg/m2 beloranib was −3.8 kg (95% CI −5.1, −0.9; N = 8) versus −0.6 kg with placebo (−4.5, −0.1; N = 6). Weight change for 0.1 and 0.3 mg/m2 beloranib was similar to placebo. Beloranib (0.9 mg/m2) was associated with a significant 42 and 18% reduction in triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol, as well as improvement in C-reactive protein and reduced sense of hunger. Changes in β-hydroxybutyrate, adiponectin, leptin, and fibroblast growth factor-21 were consistent with the putative mechanism of MetAP2 inhibition. Glucose and blood pressure were unchanged. 1. A pulmonary tuberculosis mouse model was used to assess the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic characteristics of tuberculosis therapeutics. While membrane transporters play important roles in drug disposition and physiological homeostasis, their expressional changes and contribution have never been analysed in a tuberculosis animal model. 2. The mRNA expression level of 20 Abc family transporters and 32 Slc family transporters in tuberculosisinfected mice were compared with those in naïve uninfected mice using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection induced many dramatic expression changes of families of both Abc transporters and Slc transporters at 4 and 8 weeks, as observed in the livers, kidneys, and intestines of test mice — and in a different mode, in the lungs and spleens as well. These changes were dependent on the tuberculosis progression with the tissue-specific manner, that is, in the lungs, the number of transporters of which the expression level changed due to M. tuberculosis infection had increased, and the magnitude of change also greater at 8 weeks, while in the spleen, the transcription of most transporters except Mrps had not changed or had recovered back to the same level of naïve transcription at 8 weeks. 3. Understanding the expression changes of transporters will assist in setting up rational preclinical dosing plans through the ability to predict the pharmacokinetics of new anti-tuberculosis chemotherapeutics and, furthermore, will assist in the design of safer and more efficient drug regimens. 1. The effects of folic acid-induced acute renal failure on the renal excretion of belotecan were investigated in rats after intravenous administration. 2. Both glomeruli and renal tubules were seriously damaged by folic acid-induced acute renal failure. The renal excretion clearance, CLr, of belotecan was significantly decreased by folic acid-induced acute renal failure. Furthermore, glomerular filtration rate and secretion clearance of the drug were dramatically decreased by folic acid-induced acute renal failure. 3. In vivo renal uptake of belotecan was inhibited by p-aminohippurate, whereas renal excretion was inhibited by GF120918, but not by verapamil and bromosulphalein. This indicates that Oat1/3 and Bcrp are involved in the renal uptake and urinary excretion of belotecan, respectively. 4. Both mRNA and protein levels of Oat1, Oat3 and Bcrp were significantly decreased in folic acid- induced acute renal failure rats. Based on the finding that belotecan is a substrate of OAT1 but not of OAT3, the decrease in CLr of belotecan in folic acid-induced acute renal failure could, therefore, mainly be attributed to the down-regulation of Oat1 and Bcrp, in addition to the decrease in glomerular filtration rate. Aim: We recently succeeded in preparing soft gelatin capsules containing a new self-nanoemulsifying formulation consisting of cyclosporin A (CsA), triacetin, polyoxyl 40 hydrogenated castor oil, polysorbate 20, medium chain triglycerides and medium chain mono- and diglycerides. The soft capsules containing the new formulation exhibited a significantly improved physical stability in terms of the appearance of the gelatin capsule shells and the composition of the fill mass during long-term storage, compared to commercially available soft capsules containing CsA, in which ethanol was employed as a cosolvent of CsA. In the present study, the influence of a fat-rich meal on the bioavailability of CsA from the soft capsule containing the new formulation (test drug) was evaluated and the results compared to those obtained with a representative soft capsule of CsA. Volunteers and methods: A randomized, open-label, 3-way crossover study was performed in the test capsules and reference soft capsules, in a fasted state or after a fat-rich breakfast. 18 healthy male volunteers received a single dose of the reference formulation (Neoral, Novartis AG, Basel, Switzerland) or test formulation (2 capsules each, 200 mg as CsA) with 240 ml of water with a 1-week washout period between the treatments, after a fat-rich (670 kcal, 45 g fat) breakfast (for the test drug, Treatment A; for the reference drug, Treatment B) or a 12-h fasting (for the test drug, Treatment C). Serial blood samples, collected over a 24-h period after the administration, were assayed for blood CsA concentrations using a specific monoclonal radioimmunoassay. Results: The differences in bioavailability parameters (i.e., AUC0–24h, AUC0-∞ and Cmax) between the Treatments were within the range of 80–125% of the reference treatment. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed no significant differences (p > 0.05) between subjects, formulations or periods. The 90% confidence intervals (CI) indicated that the differences between the treatments (Treatments A and B, Treatments A and C) were also within the criteria. Conclusion: These results indicate that the bioavailability of CsA from the test drug is equivalent to reference in the fed state, and is likely to be less influenced by a fat-rich meal. Therefore, the new formulation of CsA using triacetin appears to have an advantage over the commercial soft capsules of CsA using a volatile cosolvent such as ethanol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND Patients with newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) need long-term therapy with high efficacy and safety. Asciminib, a BCR::ABL1 inhibitor specifically targeting the ABL myristoyl pocket, may offer better efficacy and safety and fewer side effects than currently available frontline ATP-competitive tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). METHODS In a phase 3 trial, patients with newly diagnosed CML were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either asciminib (80 mg once daily) or an investigator-selected TKI, with randomization stratified by European Treatment and Outcome Study long-term survival score category (low, intermediate, or high risk) and by TKI selected by investigators before randomization (including imatinib and second-generation TKIs). The primary end points were major molecular response (defined as BCR::ABL1 transcript levels =0.1% on the International Scale [IS]) at week 48, for comparisons between asciminib and investigator-selected TKIs and between asciminib and investigator-selected TKIs in the prerandomization-selected imatinib stratum. RESULTS A total of 201 patients were assigned to receive asciminib and 204 to receive investigator-selected TKIs. The median follow-up was 16.3 months in the asciminib group and 15.7 months in the investigator-selected TKI group. A major molecular response at week 48 occurred in 67.7% of patients in the asciminib group, as compared with 49.0% in the investigator-selected TKI group (difference, 18.9 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], 9.6 to 28.2; adjusted two-sided P<0.001]), and in 69.3% of patients in the asciminib group as compared with 40.2% in the imatinib group within the imatinib stratum (difference, 29.6 percentage points; 95% CI, 16.9 to 42.2; adjusted two-sided P<0.001). The percentage of patients with a major molecular response at week 48 was 66.0% with asciminib and 57.8% with TKIs in the second-generation TKI stratum (difference, 8.2 percentage points; 95% CI, -5.1 to 21.5). Adverse events of grade 3 or higher and events leading to discontinuation of the trial regimen were less frequent with asciminib (38.0% and 4.5%, respectively) than with imatinib (44.4% and 11.1%) and second-generation TKIs (54.9% and 9.8%). CONCLUSIONS: In this trial comparing asciminib with investigator-selected TKIs and imatinib, asciminib showed superior efficacy and a favorable safety profile in patients with newly diagnosed chronic-phase CML. Abstract: There are opportunities for physiatrists to apply a palliative care lens within clinical encounters across rehabilitation settings. The expanding population of patients with serious illness and injury cared for by physiatrists and the anticipated shortage of specialty palliative care clinicians make it important that physiatrists hone and apply basic palliative care skills as part of comprehensive physiatric care. In this article, four clinical vignettes highlight relevant palliative care communication skills and demonstrate the value of integrating these skills within physiatry encounters. Rationale: The second generation antipsychotic drug clozapine is a psychotherapeutic agent with superior efficacy for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Clozapine is associated with a low likelihood of neurological side-effects, but a high propensity to induce weight gain and metabolic dysregulation. The primary metabolite of clozapine is norclozapine (N-Desmethylclozapine), which has psychoactive properties itself, but its effects on metabolic function remains unknown. The goal of the present study was to determine whether directly administered norclozapine could cause metabolic dysregulation, similar to clozapine., Methods: Adult female rats were treated with a range of doses of clozapine and norclozapine (0.5, 2, 8 & 20 mg/kg, i.p.) and then subjected to the intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IGTT), where glucose levels were recorded for 2 h following a glucose challenge. In parallel, rats were tested with two doses of clozapine and norclozapine (2 & 20 mg/kg, i.p.) in the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp (HIEC), to measure whole body insulin resistance., Results: In the IGTT, clozapine demonstrated dose-dependent effects on fasting glucose levels and total glucose area-under-the-curve following the glucose challenge, with the two highest doses strongly increasing glucose levels. Only the highest dose of norclozapine increased fasting glucose levels, and caused a non-significant increase in glucose levels following the challenge. By contrast, both doses of clozapine and norclozapine caused a potent and long-lasting decrease in the glucose infusion rate in the HIEC, indicating that both compounds cause whole body insulin resistance., Abstract: While not as potent as its parent compound, norclozapine clearly exerts acute metabolic effects, particularly on insulin resistance. Arsenic uptake by hyperaccumulator plant species depends on many different environmental factors. Soil pH is one of the most important factors due to its combined effect on both chemical and biological processes. In greenhouse experiment, the effect of pH (within the pH range 3.6 - 8.9) on As uptake as well as biomass of Pityrogramma calomelanos was evaluated. The plants were grown in mining soil containing 645.6 mg As kg(-1) for 14 weeks. Within this time, the plant biomass growth was 3.78 - 8.64 g d. wt. per plant and the removal amounted 6.3-18.4 mg As per plant. Translocation factor (ratio of As in fronds to roots) of the fern was 3.6 - 9.7, indicating its potential in phytoremediation of As contaminated soil. Influence of pH on As bioavailability was visible as the available As concentration was higher in acidic soil compared to alkaline soil. Furthermore, it was found that As accumulation by Pityrogramma calomelanos was optimum in the soil of pH 3.6. Nevertheless, the results of this study demonstrate that remediation of As-contaminated mining soils, by this fern, can be improved by changing the soil pH from 4.6 to 6.8.

Background: Nutrition's impact on stroke rehabilitation outcomes is controversial. Existing studies utilize albumin without correcting for inflammation in nutritional assessments. Here, prealbumin was used and inflammation assessed to determine if nutrition impacts rehabilitation outcomes., Objective: Determine the effect of dietary intake on prealbumin level, number of complications, length of stay, and Functional Independence Measure (FIM) efficiency in rehabilitation stroke inpatients., Methods: Patients had admission and discharge prealbumin and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels drawn; and, weekly protein and calorie counts obtained. Patients were followed for number of complications, length of stay, and FIM efficiency., Results: Mean protein and calorie intake was 57.6 ± 16.2 g/d and 1452.2 ± 435.8 kcal/d, respectively. 77.6% of patients had normal prealbumin on admission with 94.9% on discharge. Prealbumin increased significantly from admission to discharge (22.3 ± 6.2 mg/dL vs. 24.6 mg/dL ± 5.1 mg/dL, P = 0.007). Number of complications and length of stay were predicted by CRP in regression models. Total, motor, and cognitive FIM efficiencies were not universally affected by prealbumin levels, protein intake, or calorie intake., Conclusions: Nearly all hypoprealbuminemic stroke rehabilitation inpatients correct their levels eating a non-supplemented diet. Number of complications, length of stay, and functional outcomes in this patient are not affected by prealbumin levels, protein intake, or calorie intake.

The extracranial hypoglossal nerve has a well described course as it traverses the neck, and is frequently identified during neck dissection, carotid endarterectomy and other procedures involving the deep spaces of the neck. A case is presented which demonstrates aberrancy of its anatomic position. Variations of its course are well documented, however none have demonstrated a course lateral to the internal jugular vein. This serves to alert the surgeon to be mindful of such atypical presentations as the consequences of iatrogenic injury to such structures may be significant.

A reservoir-type transdermal delivery system of testosterone (TS) was developed using an ethanol/water (70:30) cosolvent system as the vehicle. The maximum permeation rate achieved by 70% (v/v) of ethanol was further increased from 2.69 to 47.83 microg/cm(2)/h with the addition of 1.0% dodecylamine as the skin permeation enhancer. The permeation rate of TS through the ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) membrane was observed to increase as the vinyl acetate content in the copolymer increased. Addition of 1.0% (w/w) gelling agent, hydroxypropyl methlycellulose (HPMC), in the reservoir formulation resulted in desirable rheological properties with an insignificant effect on the skin permeation rate of TS. Thus, a new transdermal delivery system for TS was formulated using EVA membrane coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive (Duro-Tak 87-2510) and HPMC as a gelling agent. This experimental patch showed comparable plasma concentration profiles in the in vivo study when compared with a commercial product, Androderm(R). Moreover, the results suggested the possibility of further enhancing the permeation rate of TS by controlling the composition of the reservoir formulation.

1-(4-Methylpiperazinyl)-3-phenylisoquinoline hydrochloride (CWJ-a-5) is a newly developed from benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloids and derivative and has exhibited potent antitumor activities, in vitro and in vivo. The pharmacokinetics of this novel antitumor 3-arylisoquinoline derivative was studied after intravenous (i.v.), oral (p.o.) and hepatoportal (p.v.) administration in rats. A simple high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed to determine the concentrations of CWJ-a-5 in plasma, bile and urine. Plasma concentration profiles of CWJ-a-5 were best fitted by the two-compartment model after i.v. administration and showed a linear pharmacokinetic behavior up to 20 mg/kg doses. The half-life of CWJ-a-5 in the post-distributive phase (t1/2beta), total-body plasma clearance (CLt), and volume of distribution at steady-state (Vdss) were 86.9 min, 5.72 l/h per kilogram and 9.79 l/kg, respectively, after i.v. administration of 10 mg/kg. Biliary and urinary excretion of CWJ-a-5 was < 1% after i.v. injection of 10 mg/kg. The bioavailability of CWJ-a-5 after p.o. and p.v. administration (50 and 10 mg/kg, respectively) was 52.9 and 72.2%, respectively. Gastrointestinal bioavailability was calculated to be 73.3%. The apparent partition coefficient (log P) of CWJ-a-5 between n-octanol and water was 2.64. Plasma protein binding of CWJ-a-5 measured by the ultrafiltration method was > 95%.

The accelerated stability of dimethoxy biphenyl monocarboxylate x HCl (DDB-S) was investigated in 6 mg/mL water solution in the pH ranging 2-10 and the temperature of 45-85 degrees C. The observed rate of degradation followed first-order kinetics. The energy of activation for DDB-S degradation was calculated to be 14.1 and 16.5 Kcal/mole at pH 5 and in distilled water, respectively. The degradation rate constant (K(25 degrees C)) obtained by trending line analysis of Arrhenius plots for DDB-S was 5.3 x 10(-6) h(-1). The times to degrade 10% (t10) and 50% (t50) at 25 degrees C were 829 and 5,416 days, respectively. DDB-S exhibited the fastest degradation at pH 10 and the slowest rate at pH 5. In addition, at 65 degrees C, degradation rate constants of DDB-S were 0.066, 0.059, 5.460, 32.171, and 1.41 x 10(6) h(-1) at pH 2, 5, 8, 10 and in distilled water, respectively. These observations indicated that the rate-pH profile of DDB-S showed general acid-base catalysis reaction in the range of pH 2-10.

The effect of various pore formers on the controlled release of an antibacterial agent from a polymeric device was examined in order to develop a novel biomaterial that prevents bacterial adhesion and growth on its surface. Cefadroxil was chosen as the model antibiotic and was incorporated into a polyurethane matrix by the solvent-casting method. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1450, D-mannitol, or bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a pore former. The amount of cefadroxil released from various formulations at 37 degrees C was measured by HPLC. The morphological change of matrices before and after release studies was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The duration of antimicrobial activities of matrices against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis was evaluated by measuring the diameters of the inhibition zone. Changing the weight fraction and particle size of the pore formers/drug mixtures could control the release of cefadroxil from the matrix. The release rate of cefadroxil increased as the loading dose of the pore former increased (15<20<25%). Cefadroxil released from these devices exhibited antibacterial activity for 5-6 days. These results imply that an antibiotic-loaded polymeric device that could prevent bacterial infection on its surface can be formulated using appropriate pore formers.

To establish the optimum conditions for improving the transdermal delivery of testosterone, we studied the relationship between the lipophilicity of testosterone ester derivatives and the rat skin permeation rate of testosterone. We performed a rat skin permeation study of testosterone and its commercially available ester derivatives, testosterone hemisuccinate, testosterone propionate and testosterone-17beta-cypionate, using an ethanol/water co-solvent system. The aqueous solubility and rat skin permeation rate of each drug, saturated in various compositions of an ethanol/water system, was determined at 37 degrees C. The aqueous solubility of testosterone and its ester derivatives increased exponentially as the volume fraction of ethanol increased up to 100% (v/v). The stability of testosterone propionate in both the skin homogenate and the extract was investigated to observe the enzymatic degradation during the skin permeation process. Testosterone propionate was found to be stable in the isotonic buffer solution and in the epidermis-side extract for 10h at 37 degrees C. However, in the skin homogenate and the dermis-side extract testosterone propionate rapidly degraded producing testosterone, implying that testosterone propionate rapidly degraded to testosterone during the skin permeation process. The steady-state permeation rates of testosterone in the ethanol/water systems increased exponentially as the volume fraction of ethanol increased, reaching the maximum value (2.69+/-0.69 microg cm(-2)h(-1)) at 70% (v/v) ethanol in water, and then decreasing with further increases in the ethanol volume fraction. However, in the skin permeation study with testosterone esters saturated in 70% (v/v) ethanol in water system, testosterone esters were hardly detected in the receptor solution, probably due to the rapid degradation to testosterone during the skin permeation process. Moreover, a parabolic relationship was observed between the permeation rate of testosterone and the log P values of ester derivatives. Maximum flux was achieved at a log P value of around 3 which corresponded to that of testosterone (log P = 3.4). The results showed that the skin permeation rate of testosterone and its ester derivatives was maximized when these compounds were saturated in a 70% ethanolic solution. It was also found that a log P value of around 3 is suitable for the skin permeation of testosterone related compounds.

We studied the interactions between platelet-activating factor (PAF) and phospholipase C (PLC) in the modulation of microvascular responses in the hamster cheek pouch using intravital microscopy and computer-assisted image analysis. Changes in arteriolar diameter and in integrated optical intensity (IOI, an index of vascular permeability) were measured. Fluorescein-isothiocyanate-labeled dextran 150 (FITC-Dx 150) served as a tracer for macromolecular transport. 2-Nitro-4-carboxyphenyl N,N-diphenylcarbamate (NCDC) and 1-(6-((17beta-3-methoxyestra-1,3, 5(10)-trien-17-yl)amino)hexyl)-1H-pyrrole-2,5,-dione (U-73122), two PLC inhibitors, were applied topically in separate experiments. PAF at 10(-7) M elevated IOI from baseline to a mean +/- SEM value of 70. 7 +/- 8.9 units. Pretreatment with 10(-4) and 10(-5) M NCDC and with U-73122 at 10(-5) and 10(-6) M attenuated the maximal increment in mean IOI (+/-SEM) induced by PAF at 10(-7) M to mean +/- SEM values of 30.6 +/- 6.5, 39.3 +/- 6.0, 12.1 +/- 4.8, and 41.5 +/- 6.0, respectively. The simultaneous vasoconstrictor action of 10(-7) M PAF was expressed as the experimental-to-baseline ratio, with the baseline diameter adjusted to a value of 1. PAF constricted the arterioles to a mean +/- SEM ratio of 0.30 +/- 0.07. Pretreatment with the PLC inhibitors NCDC at 10(-4) and 10(-5) M NCDC and with U-73122 at 10(-5) and 10(-6) M attenuated 10(-7) M PAF-induced vasoconstriction to mean +/- SEM diameter ratios of 0.55 +/- 0.05, 0. 48 +/- 0.06, 0.55 +/- 0.08, and 0.58 +/- 0.06, respectively. Purpose: A patient with traumatic glaucoma who underwent transpupillary argon laser cyclophotocoagulation for management of uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) despite maximally tolerated medical therapy is discussed., Methods: In this patient, pars plana vitrectomy, lensectomy, and removal of 180 degrees of necrotic iris had been performed after a blunt trauma with a bungee cord. Six weeks after surgery, the patient presented with an IOP of 40 mmHg despite therapy with three aqueous suppressants. The patient refused further surgical intervention and opted for transpupillary argon laser cyclophotocoagulation (TALC). The laser setting was 1,000 mW, with a 50-micron spot size for 0.1 second. A total of 293 laser exposures through a Goldmann contact lens was administered to all visible ciliary processes over 180 degrees where iris structures were absent., Results: Ten weeks after TALC, the patient's IOP remained controlled with medications at 16 mmHg, and visual acuity had improved to 20/25 with an aphakic contact lens., Conclusion: In selected patients whose ciliary processes are visible with indirect gonioscopy due to the defect in the iris, TALC may be an effective alternative cyclodestructive procedure to lower IOP when conventional medical or laser treatments are not successful.

Background and Objective: To evaluate changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) following uneventful phacoemulsification cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation (Phaco/PC IOL) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients., Patients and Methods: The authors retrospectively reviewed preoperative and postoperative IOP in 31 consecutive medically-controlled POAG patients who underwent uneventful Phaco/PC IOL. None of the patients had prior intraocular surgery., Results: The mean preoperative IOP in the POAG group was 18.1+/-3.1 mm Hg with patients receiving a mean of 1.7 antiglaucoma medications. With a mean follow-up of 16.4 months, the average postoperative IOP in the POAG group was 15.2+/-2.9 mm Hg (P < .001, Student's t test) with patients receiving a mean of 0.7 antiglaucoma medication (P < .001)., Conclusion: Phaco/PC IOL may be associated with a significant decrease in IOP in POAG patients, allowing for decreased postoperative antiglaucoma medication.
