ObjectiveThis study aims to construct an effective prediction model for the two-year postoperative survival probability of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It particularly focuses on integrating radiomics features, including the erector spinae and whole-lung imaging features, to enhance the accuracy and stability of prognostic predictions.Materials and methodsThe study included 37 NSCLC patients diagnosed and surgically treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University from January 2020 to December 2021. The average age of the patients was 59 years, with the majority being female and non-smokers. Additionally, CT imaging data from 98 patients were obtained from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) public database. All imaging data were derived from preoperative chest CT scans and standardized using 3D Slicer software. The study extracted radiomic features from the tumor, whole lung, and erector spinae muscles of the patients and applied 11 machine learning algorithms to construct prediction models. Subsequently, the classification performance of all constructed models was compared to select the optimal prediction model.ResultsUnivariate Cox regression analysis showed no significant correlation between the collected clinical factors and patient survival time. In the external validation set, the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) model based on bilateral erector spinae features performed the best, with accuracy and AUC (Area Under the Curve) values consistently above 0.7 in both the training and external testing sets. Among the prognostic models based on whole-lung imaging features, the AdaBoost model also performed well, but its AUC value was below 0.6 in the external validation set, indicating overall classification performance still inferior to the KNN model based on erector spinae features.ConclusionThis study is the first to introduce erector spinae imaging features into lung cancer research, successfully developing a stable and well-performing prediction model for the postoperative survival of NSCLC patients. The research results provide new perspectives and directions for the application of radiomics in cancer research and emphasize the importance of incorporating multi-organ imaging features to improve the accuracy and stability of prediction models.

Abstract Background Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is an age‐related orthopedic degenerative disease characterized by recurrent episodes of lower back pain, the pathogenesis of which is not fully understood. This study aimed to identify key biomarkers of IVDD and its causes. Methods We acquired three gene expression profiles from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, GSE56081, GSE124272, and GSE153761, and used limma fast differential analysis to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between normal and IVDD samples after removing batch effects. We applied weighted gene co‐expression network (WGCNA) to identify the key modular genes in GSE124272 and intersected these with DEGs. Next, A protein–protein interaction network (PPI) was constructed, and Cytoscape was used to identify the Top 10 hub genes. Functional enrichment analyses were performed using gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases. Three key genes were validated using Western Blot (WB) and qRT‐PCR. Additionally, we predicted miRNAs involved in hub gene co‐regulation and analyzed miRNA microarray data from GSE116726 to identify four differentially expressed miRNAs. Results We identified 10 hub genes using bioinformatics analysis, gene function enrichment analysis revealed that they were primarily enriched in pathways, such as the TNF signaling pathway. We chose JUNB, SOCS3, and CEBPB as hub genes and used WB and qRT‐PCR to confirm their expression. All three genes were overexpressed in the IVDD model group compared to the control group. Furthermore, we identified four miRNAs involved in the co‐regulation of the hub genes using miRNet prediction: mir‐191‐5p, mir‐20a‐5p, mir‐155‐5p, and mir‐124‐3p. Using limma difference analysis, we discovered that mir‐191‐5p, mir‐20a‐5p, and mir‐155‐5p were all down‐regulated and expressed in IVDD samples, but mir‐124‐3p showed no significant change. Conclusion JUNB, SOCS3, and CEBPB were identified as key genes in IVDD, regulated by specific miRNAs, providing potential biomarkers for early diagnosis and therapeutic targets.

Fractures and bone nonunion commonly require surgical intervention. Serious outcomes of non‐healing in the late stages of fracture place a significant financial burden on society and families. Bone nonunion occurs when a fracture stops healing, for many reasons, and leads to a variety of bad outcomes. Numerous factors, including biomechanics and immunology, are involved in the complicated mechanisms of bone nonunion. The immune‐inflammatory response plays a significant part in the emergence of bone nonunion, and the occurrence, control, and remission of inflammation in the bone healing process have a significant influence on the ultimate success of bone tissue repair. In the bone microenvironment, immune cells and associated cytokines control bone repair, which is significantly influenced by macrophages, T cells, and fibroblast growth factor. To limit acute inflammation and balance osteogenesis and osteoblastogenesis for tissue repair and regeneration, immune cells and various cytokines in the local microenvironment must be precisely regulated. As a bad complication of late‐stage fractures, bone nonunion has a significant effect on patients’ quality of life and socioeconomic development. Therefore, in‐depth research on its pathogenesis and treatment methods has important clinical value. To provide more precise, focused therapeutic options for the treatment of bone nonunion, we discuss the regulatory roles of the key immune cells engaged in bone healing within the microenvironment during bone healing and their effect on osteogenesis.

In recent years, the use of corn DDGS has alleviated the problem of protein feed shortages to a certain extent; however, its high mycotoxin content seriously restricts its application in feedstuffs. In this study, the conditions of solid-state fermented corn DDGS were optimized to investigate changes in the nutrient composition of solid-state fermented corn DDGS and their effects on the growth performance and histological section of yellow-feathered broilers. The optimal strain ratio for solid-state fermentation was determined by orthogonal testing as 1:1:2 for B. desmois JA3:B. subtilis ANSB01G: and B. subtilis ANSB060, and the response value was the score of the degradation rate of Deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN), and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) weighted by 4:4:2. Optimal conditions for the solid-state fermentation of maize DDGS were determined by B-Behnken response surface design: the inoculum amount was 1%, the feed to liquid ratio was 1:1.25, the fermentation temperature was 37°C, and the fermentation time was 29.5 h. The optimal conditions for solid-state fermentation of maize DDGS were as follows: the inoculum amount was 1%, the material-liquid ratio was 1:1.25, the fermentation temperature was 37°C, the fermentation time was 29.5h, and the degradation rates of DON, ZEN, and AFB1 in the fermented maize DDGS were 81.6%, 55.18%, and 41.14%, respectively. Moreover, solid-state fermentation significantly improved the nutrient content, in which the amounts of amino acids, crude ash, and crude fat were significantly increased (P < 0.05) and the content of crude fiber was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). The in vitro digestibility of dry matter, crude protein and crude fiber increased significantly (P < 0.05); in addition, compared with the control group, the addition of fermented maize DDGS significantly increased the daily calorific intake of broiler chickens, the daily weight gain (P < 0.05); heart, liver and intestinal tissues underwent no obvious pathological changes.

Acid-sensitive ion channels (ASICs) are sodium-permeable channels activated by extracellular acidification. They can be activated and trigger the inward flow of Na+ when the extracellular environment is acidic, leading to membrane depolarization and thus inducing action potentials in neurons. There are four ASIC genes in mammals (ASIC1–4). ASIC is widely expressed in humans. It is closely associated with pain, neurological disorders, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, migraines, and many other disorders. Bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) is a specific syndrome characterized by bladder pain. Recent studies have shown that ASICs are closely associated with the development of BPS/IC. A study revealed that ASIC levels are significantly elevated in a BPS/IC model. Additionally, researchers have reported differential changes in ASICs in the bladders of patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) caused by spinal cord injury (SCI). In this review, we summarize the structure and physiological functions of ASICs and focus on the mechanisms by which ASICs mediate bladder disease.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) levels on intestinal antioxidant status, tight junction proteins expression, and amino acids transporters levels in squabs. A total of 180 pairs of White King parent pigeons approximately 10 mo old were randomly assigned to 5 groups with 6 replications of 6 pairs of parental pigeons each, and were fed with 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18% CP diets for 46 d, respectively. Dietary increasing CP levels increased final body weight (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05), serum urea nitrogen (linear, P 0.05). An eco-friendly, cost-effective, and scalable aqueous spinning of robust and porous hybrid fibers consisting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene has been developed. We focus on the design of nanoarchitecture within CNT fibers involving the precise control of CNT bundle size and alignment, porosity, and the interaction between CNTs and Graphene. The effect of graphene oxides (GO) sizes on the quality of CNT/GO aqueous dispersions and the structures/properties of the as-spun fibers was investigated, and nano-sized GO was found to be most effective in reducing CNT bundle size, improving CNT alignment, and strengthening the fibers. After high-temperature treatment, the specific strength and specific conductivity of these CNT/graphene hybrid fibers reached to 1.02 N/tex and 1202.01 S m2/g, which were 7.39 and 1.21 times higher than those of pure CNT fibers. Meanwhile, the CNT/graphene hybrid fibers also have a high specific capacity of 168 F g−1. The combination of high mechanical, electrical, and electrochemical performances makes the CNT/graphene hybrid fibers promising materials for wearable electronics.

Epimedin B (EB) is one of the main flavonoid ingredients present in Epimedium brevicornum Maxim., a traditional herb widely used in China. Our previous study showed that EB was a stronger inducer of melanogenesis and an activator of tyrosinase (TYR). However, the role of EB in melanogenesis and the mechanism underlying the regulation remain unclear. Herein, as an extension to our previous investigation, we provide comprehensive evidence of EB-induced pigmentation in vivo and in vitro and elucidate the melanogenesis mechanism by assessing its effects on the TYR family of proteins (TYRs) in terms of expression, activity, and stability. The results showed that EB increased TYRs expression through microphthalmia-associated transcription factor-mediated p-Akt (referred to as protein kinase B (PKB))/glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β)/β-catenin, p-p70 S6 kinase cascades, and protein 38 (p38)/mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase (MAPK) and extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK)/MAPK pathways, after which EB increased the number of melanosomes and promoted their maturation for melanogenesis in melanoma cells and human primary melanocytes/skin tissues. Furthermore, EB exerted repigmentation by stimulating TYR activity in hydroquinone- and N-phenylthiourea-induced TYR inhibitive models, including melanoma cells, zebrafish, and mice. Finally, EB ameliorated monobenzone-induced depigmentation in vitro and in vivo through the enhancement of TYRs stability by inhibiting TYR misfolding, TYR-related protein 1 formation, and retention in the endoplasmic reticulum and then by downregulating the ubiquitination and proteolysis processes. These data conclude that EB can target TYRs and alter their expression, activity, and stability, thus stimulating their pigmentation function, which might provide a novel rational strategy for hypopigmentation treatment in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Herein, the ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions affecting the yield of EUPS (Eucommia ulmoides polysaccharide) were analyzed using a Box-Behnken response surface design. The alleviation effect of EUPS on diquat-induced oxidative stress in mice was also studied. A maximum EUPS yield of 2.60% was obtained under the following optimized conditions: an extraction temperature of 63 °C, extraction time of 1 h, and ratio of liquid to raw materials of 22:1. EUPS exhibited strong 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging ability (87.05%), 2′-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate) (ABTS) radical-scavenging ability (101.17%), and hydroxyl radical-scavenging ability (62.92%). The administration of EUPS increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase and decreased malondialdehyde levels in the livers of mice exposed to diquat. EUPS may inhibit the downregulation of NAD(P)H:quinoneoxidoreductase 1 and heme oxygenase 1 mRNA expression in the livers of diquat-administered mice through the Nrf2-Keap1 signaling pathway. Moreover, the abundance of Firmicutes and Ligilactobacillus was enhanced, whereas that of Helicobacter decreased in the gut of the remaining groups of mice compared with that of the diquat-treated mice. Therefore, EUPS exhibited an antioxidant effect and improved oxidative stress and intestinal flora abundance in mice.

Abstract Selective hydrogenation of carbon monoxide (CO) to higher alcohols (C2+OH) is a promising non-petroleum route for producing high-value chemicals, in which precise regulations of both C-O cleavage and C-C coupling are highly essential but remain great challenges. Herein, we report that highly selective CO hydrogenation to C2-4OH is achieved over a potassium-modified edge-rich molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) catalyst, which delivers a high CO conversion of 17% with a superior C2-4OH selectivity of 45.2% in hydrogenated products at 240 °C and 50 bar, outperforming previously reported non-noble metal-based catalysts under similar conditions. By regulating the relative abundance of edge to basal plane, C2-4OH to methanol selectivity ratio can be overturned from 0.4 to 2.2. Mechanistic studies reveal that sulfur vacancies at MoS2 edges boost carbon-chain growth by facilitating not only C-O cleavage but also C-C coupling, while potassium promotes the desorption of alcohols via electrostatic interaction with hydroxyls, thereby enabling preferential formation of C2-4OH.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic joint bone disease characterized by inflammatory destruction and hyperplasia of bone. Its main clinical symptoms are joint mobility difficulties and pain, severe cases can lead to limb paralysis, which poses major pressure to the quality of life and mental health of patients, but also brings serious economic burden to society. The occurrence and development of KOA is influenced by many factors, including systemic factors and local factors. The joint biomechanical changes caused by aging, trauma and obesity, abnormal bone metabolism caused by metabolic syndrome, the effects of cytokines and related enzymes, genetic and biochemical abnormalities caused by plasma adiponectin, etc. all directly or indirectly lead to the occurrence of KOA. However, there is little literature that systematically and comprehensively integrates macro‐ and microscopic KOA pathogenesis. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively and systematically summarize the pathogenesis of KOA in order to provide a better theoretical basis for clinical treatment.

Lead (Pb) is a hazardous heavy metal that accumulates in many environments. Phytoremediation of Pb polluted soil is an environmentally friendly method, and a better understanding of mycorrhizal symbiosis under Pb stress can promote its efficiency and application. This study aims to evaluate the impact of two ectomycorrhizal fungi (Suillus grevillei and Suillus luteus) on the performance of Pinus tabulaeformis under Pb stress, and the biomineralization of metallic Pb in vitro. A pot experiment using substrate with 0 and 1,000 mg/kg Pb2+ was conducted to evaluate the growth, photosynthetic pigments, oxidative damage, and Pb accumulation of P. tabulaeformis with or without ectomycorrhizal fungi. In vitro co-cultivation of ectomycorrhizal fungi and Pb shots was used to evaluate Pb biomineralization. The results showed that colonization by the two ectomycorrhizal fungi promoted plant growth, increased the content of photosynthetic pigments, reduced oxidative damage, and caused massive accumulation of Pb in plant roots. The structural characteristics of the Pb secondary minerals formed in the presence of fungi demonstrated significant differences from the minerals formed in the control plates and these minerals were identified as pyromorphite (Pb5(PO4)3Cl). Ectomycorrhizal fungi promoted the performance of P. tabulaeformis under Pb stress and suggested a potential role of mycorrhizal symbiosis in Pb phytoremediation. This observation also represents the first discovery of such Pb biomineralization induced by ectomycorrhizal fungi. Ectomycorrhizal fungi induced Pb biomineralization is also relevant to the phytostabilization and new approaches in the bioremediation of polluted environments.

Bone nonunion is a common and serious orthopedic disorder, the occurrence of which is associated with a disruption of the dynamic balance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts during bone repair. However, the critical molecular mechanisms affecting this homeostasis are not well understood, and it is essential to investigate the specific components of this mechanism and to restore the balance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts to promote bone repair. First, we defined this complex local environmental factor as the “bone nonunion microenvironment” and identified the importance of the “struggle” between osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which is the most essential element in determining the process of repair. On this basis, we also explored the cellular factors that influence osteogenesis and the molecular signals that influence the balance between osteoclast and osteoblasts, which are important for restoring homeostasis. Further, we explored other factors involved in osteogenesis, such as the biomechanical environment, the nutritional environment, the acid-base environment, and the temperature environment, which are important players in osteogenesis. In conclusion, we found that the balance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts is the essence of bone healing, which is based on the “bone nonunion microenvironment”. Therefore, investigating the role of the bone nonunion microenvironment in the system of osteoblast-osteoclast “struggle” provides an important basis for further understanding of the mechanism of nonunion and the development of new therapeutic approaches.

Abstract Background Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a common chronic disease in orthopedics, and its molecular mechanisms are still not well explained. Aim This study's objective was to bioinformatics‐based discovery of IVDD biomarkers and immune‐inflammatory infiltrates. Materials and Methods The IVDD illness gene collection was gathered from GeneCards, DisGeNet, and gene expression profiles were chosen from the extensive Gene Expression Omnibus database (GSE124272, GSE150408, and GSE153761). The STRING database was used to create a network of protein–protein interactions, while the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) databases were used for functional enrichment analysis. Using hub genes, the immune cell infiltration between IVDD patient samples and control tissues was examined. Finally, quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blot experiments were used to verify the expression of hub genes. Results A total of 27 differentially expressed hub genes were identified by bioinformatics. According to GO and KEGG analyses, hub genes were prominent in immunological responses, chemokine‐mediated signaling pathways, and inflammatory responses, with the key signaling pathways engaged in cellular senescence, apoptosis, Th1 and Th2 cell differentiation, and Th17 cell differentiation. Immune cell infiltration research revealed that T cells, lymphocytes, B cells, and NK cells were decreased in IVDD patients while monocytes, neutrophils, and CD8 T cells were increased. The expression levels of the senescence hub genes SP1, VEGFA, IL‐6, and the apoptosis key gene CASP3 were considerably greater in the IVDD model group than in the control group, according to in vitro validation. Conclusion In conclusion, the cellular senescence signaling pathway, the apoptosis signaling pathway, and associated hub genes play significant roles in the development and progression of IVDD, this finding may help direct future research on the senescence signaling route in IVDD.

Abstract Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) has become a serious public health problem, placing a heavy burden on society and the healthcare system. Its pathogenesis is not completely clear and may be closely related to mechanical damage, inflammatory factors, oxidative stress and death of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs). The treatment of IVDD mainly includes conservative treatment and surgery. Conservative treatment is based on hormonal and anti-inflammatory drugs and massage techniques, which can relieve the pain symptoms to a certain extent, but cannot solve the problem from the root cause. Surgical treatment is mainly by removing the herniated nucleus pulposus, but it is more traumatic for IVDD patients, expensive and not suitable for all patients. Therefore, it is extremely important to clarify the pathogenesis of IVDD, to find an effective and convenient treatment and to further elaborate its mechanism of action. The effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of IVDD has been well demonstrated in clinical medical research. We have been working on the Chinese herbal formula Duhuo Jisheng Decoction, which is a common formula for the treatment of degenerative disc disease. Not only does it have significant clinical effects, but it also has few adverse effects. At present, we found that its mechanism of action mainly involves regulation of inflammatory factors, reduction of apoptosis and pyroptosis of NPCs, inhibition of extracellular matrix degradation, improvement of intestinal flora, etc. However, a few relevant articles have yet comprehensively and systematically summarized the mechanisms by which they exert their effect. Therefore, this paper will comprehensively and systematically explain on it. This is of great clinical significance and social value for elucidating the pathogenesis of IVDD and improving the symptoms of patients, and will provide a theoretical basis and scientific basis for the treatment of IVDD with traditional Chinese medicine.

In this study, for enhancing the resistance of probiotics to environmental factors, we designed a microgel beads delivery system loaded with synbiotics. Multiple droplets of W1/O/W2 emulsions stabilized with zein–apple pectin hybrid nanoparticles (ZAHPs) acted as the inner “egg,” whereas a three-dimensional network of poly-L-lysine (PLL)-alginate-CaCl2 (Ca) crosslinked gel layers served as the outermost “box.” ZAHPs with a mass ratio of 2:1 zein-to-apple pectin showed excellent wettability (three-phase contact angle = 89.88°). The results of the ζ-potentials and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate that electrostatic interaction forces and hydrogen bonding were the main forces involved in the formation of ZAHPs. On this basis, we prepared W1/O/W2 emulsions with other preparation parameters and observed their microstructures by optical microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscope. The multi-chambered structures of W1/O/W2 emulsions were successfully visualized. Finally, the W1/O/W2 emulsions were coated with PLL-alginate-Ca using the solution extrusion method. The results of the in vitro colonic digestion stage reveal that the survival rate of probiotics in the microgel beads was about 75.11%, which was significantly higher than that of the free. Moreover, probiotics encapsulated in microgel beads also showed positive storage stability. Apple pectin would serve as both an emulsifier and a prebiotic. Thus, the results indicate that the “egg-box” shaped microgel beads, designed on the basis of pH-sensitive and enzyme-triggered mechanisms, can enhance the efficiency of probiotics translocation in the digestive tract and mediate spatiotemporal controlled release.

This study examines the evolution of the coupling relationship among the tourism industry, urbanization, and human settlements of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River from 2005 to 2019. By employing a constructed evaluation index system and a quantitative analysis model, the study aims to characterize and analyze this relationship. The key findings are as follows: (1) The coupling coordination level of the three major systems exhibits a continuous upward trend over the study period, albeit with a gradually slowing growth rate. The Changsha -Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration shows the highest average growth rate, followed by the Wuhan metropolitan area and the Poyang Lake urban agglomeration. (2) The variation coefficient and Taylor index of the coupling coordination degree demonstrate a fluctuating downward trend, indicating a convergence in spatial differences in interregional coupling coordination levels. Internal differences between city clusters within urban agglomerations are identified as the main source of overall differences in coupling coordination levels. (3) The coupling coordination levels of the three major systems follow an evolutionary trajectory characterized by "serious imbalance, moderate imbalance, mild imbalance". Clear features of level transitions are observed among various cities. (4) The endowment of tourism resources emerges as the primary factor driving the evolution of the coupling relationship among the tourism industry, urbanization, and human settlements. The study highlights the increasing diversification of driving forces and significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity in interregional driving forces for coupling relationship evolution factors.

Bifunctional catalysts containing a dehydrogenation–hydrogenation function and an acidic function are widely applied for the hydroconversion of hydrocarbon feedstocks obtained from both fossil and renewable resources. It is well known that the distance between the two functionalities is important for the performance of the catalyst. In this study, we show that the heat treatment of the catalyst precursor can be used to steer the location of the Pd precursor with respect to the acid sites in SAPO-11 and ZSM-22 zeotype materials when ions are exchanged with Pd(NH3)4(NO3)2. Two sets of catalysts were prepared based on composite materials of alumina with either SAPO-11 or ZSM-22. Pd was placed on/in the zeotype, followed by a calcination-reduction (CR) or direct reduction (DR) treatment. Furthermore, catalysts with Pd on the alumina binder were prepared. CR results in having more Pd nanoparticles inside the zeotype crystals, whereas DR yields more particles on the outer surface of the zeotype crystals as is confirmed using HAADF-STEM and XPS measurements. The catalytic performance in both n-heptane and n-hexadecane hydroconversion of the catalysts shows that having the Pd nanoparticles on the alumina binder is most beneficial for maximizing the isomer yields. Pd-on-zeotype catalysts prepared using the DR approach show intermediate performances, outperforming their Pd-in-zeotype counterparts that were prepared with the CR approach.

Heat stress (HS) can lead to oxidative stress (OS), which jeopards human health and animal production. Capsaicin (CAP) has antioxidant activities. This study aimed to investigate the impacts of CAP on the alleviation of intestinal OS in heat-stressed mice. All 40 male C57BL/6J mice were randomly allotted to 4 groups in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with 2 levels of CAP (0 and 0.4 mg/d for 15 days) and 2 ambient temperatures (normal and HS (39.5 °C per day for 2 h for the last 6 days) conditions). CAP treatment enhanced the villus height under HS conditions. CAP supplementation increased serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, jejunal glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity, and HO-1, SOD1, SOD2, and GPX1 gene abundance, also upregulated TRPV1 and UCP2 expressions in heat-stressed mice. Meanwhile, CAP administration reversed the HS-induced elevation of the TNF-α and IFN-γ abundance. Collectively, CAP could enhance intestinal antioxidant capacity in heat-stressed mice.

The alterations in mitochondrial protein glycosylation in myocardial ischaemia reperfusion (I/R) injury are still unclear. Therefore, based on a lectin microarray and liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer/mass spectrometer (LC‒MS/MS) technology combined with a bioinformatics analysis, we studied the changes in mitochondrial protein glycosylation during I/R injury. This study revealed significant differences in mitochondrial glycoprotein during I/R injury. Compared with the sham operation group, the model group, which underwent ischaemia for 30 min, showed a high expression of glycan structures recognized by lectins, such as WFA, PTL-I, LTL, GSL-I, SBA and SNA, and a low expression of glycan structures recognized by ConA, VVA and RCA120. The model group, which underwent ischaemia for 45 min, showed a high expression of glycan structures recognized by LTL and SNA and a low expression of glycan structures recognized by ECA. Further analysis showed that the Siaα2-6Gal/N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) structures recognized by SNA were significantly increased. In total, 91 differential proteins were identified by LC‒MS/MS, and 8 hub genes were screened by Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment and protein interaction analyses. Compared with the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database genes, two differential genes, Pros1 and Vtn, were obtained. Pros1 is a key regulator of the inflammatory response and vascular injury response. The Vtn gene variant is associated with the risk of myocardial infarction. This study is expected to provide a new method for the treatment of I/R injury and could provide new ideas for the postoperative prognosis of patients.

The field of carbon emissions in the construction industry has drawn extensive attention from researchers and practitioners due to the issue of global warming. In this study, an in-depth analysis of the research status, trends, and frontiers in the field of carbon emissions in the construction industry was carried out. The CiteSpace tool was used to visualize and analyze relevant papers from 1985 to 2023, to describe the overall knowledge structure in the field of carbon emissions in the construction industry using dual-map overlay analysis, journal co-citation network analysis, and keyword co-occurrence network analysis, to apply cluster analysis and burst detection to identify research trends in the field and the frontiers, and to analyze the scientific collaborations in the field. Further, the core issues in the field of carbon emissions in the construction industry were explored and relevant recommendations were proposed. The results are of great significance in identifying and analyzing knowledge systems and research patterns in the field of carbon emissions in the construction industry and help us to discover and understand the current deficiencies, trends, and frontiers in this field, thus providing useful suggestions and reflections for policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and other stakeholders.

Abstract Recently accumulated evidence implicates a close association of vitamin D (VitD) insufficiency to the incidence and clinical manifestations of the COVID-19 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-COV-2). Populations with insufficient VitD including patients with osteoporosis are more susceptible to SARS-COV-2 infection and patients with COVID-19 worsened or developed osteoporosis. It is currently unknown, however, whether osteoporosis and COVID-19 are linked by VitD insufficiency. In this study, 42 common targets for VitD on both COVID-19 and osteoporosis were identified among a total of 243 VitD targets. Further bioinformatic analysis revealed 8 core targets (EGFR, AR, ESR1, MAPK8, MDM2, EZH2, ERBB2 and MAPT) in the VitD-COVID-19-osteoporosis network. These targets are involved in the ErbB and MAPK signaling pathways critical for lung fibrosis, bone structural integrity, and cytokines through a crosstalk between COVID-19 and osteoporosis via the VitD-mediated conventional immune and osteoimmune mechanisms. Molecular docking confirmed that VitD binds tightly to the predicted targets. These findings support that VitD may target common signaling pathways in the integrated network of lung fibrosis and bone structural integrity as well as the immune systems. Therefore, VitD may serve as a preventive and therapeutic agent for both COVID-19 and osteoporosis.

Abstract Background High-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) is a serious and potentially fatal brain injury that is caused by acute hypobaric hypoxia (HH) exposure. Vasogenic edema is the main pathological factor of this condition. Hypoxia-induced disruptions of tight junctions in the endothelium trigger blood‒brain barrier (BBB) damage and induce vasogenic edema. Nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1) acts as a major regulator of hypoxia-induced endothelial cell injury, and caveolin-1 (CAV-1) is upregulated as its downstream gene in hypoxic endothelial cells. This study aimed to investigate whether CAV-1 is involved in HACE progression and the underlying mechanism. Methods C57BL/6 mice were exposed to HH (7600 m above sea level) for 24 h, and BBB injury was assessed by brain water content, Evans blue staining and FITC-dextran leakage. Immunofluorescence, transmission electron microscope, transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER), transcytosis assays, and western blotting were performed to confirm the role and underlying mechanism of CAV-1 in the disruption of tight junctions and BBB permeability. Mice or bEnd.3 cells were pretreated with MβCD, a specific blocker of CAV-1, and the effect of CAV-1 on claudin-5 internalization under hypoxic conditions was detected by immunofluorescence, western blotting, and TEER. The expression of NRF1 was knocked down, and the regulation of CAV-1 by NRF1 under hypoxic conditions was examined by qPCR, western blotting, and immunofluorescence. Results The BBB was severely damaged and was accompanied by a significant loss of vascular tight junction proteins in HACE mice. CAV-1 was significantly upregulated in endothelial cells, and claudin-5 explicitly colocalized with CAV-1. During the in vitro experiments, hypoxia increased cell permeability, CAV-1 expression, and claudin-5 internalization and downregulated tight junction proteins. Simultaneously, hypoxia induced the upregulation of CAV-1 by activating NRF1. Blocking CAV-1-mediated intracellular transport improved the integrity of TJs in hypoxic endothelial cells and effectively inhibited the increase in BBB permeability and brain water content in HH animals. Conclusions Hypoxia upregulated CAV-1 transcription via the activation of NRF1 in endothelial cells, thus inducing the internalization and autophagic degradation of claudin-5. These effects lead to the destruction of the BBB and trigger HACE. Therefore, CAV-1 may be a potential therapeutic target for HACE. Video abstract

Bone tissue repair is influenced by the synergistic interaction between acute immune microenvironment and osteogenesis. In this study will be independently by film dispersion method and static loading shell polymers and resveratrol liposome preparation CS - Res @ Lipo (CRL) and microfluidic technology preparation of HAMA@HepMA hydrogel microspheres (MS) by condensation reaction of chemical grafting, and then the non-covalent binding site of the MS microsphere was used to skillfully bind BMP-2, construct procedural release of hydrogel microspheres (CRL @ BMP - 2 @ MS). CRL@BMP-2@MS inhibit the acute immune peak by rapidly releasing Res, in addition, the sustained liberation of BMP-2 synchronizes osteoimmunity and osteogenesis, thereby accelerating bone repair. The results showed that Res was released with an increased cumulative rate of 72.4 ± 3.6% in the first 24 h, TNF-α and IL-1β levels were significantly decreased by 4.27 times and 3.65 times as compared to the control group, respectively. Furthermore, continuous release of approximately 40.26 ± 6.8% of BMP-2 occurred within the first 72 h, CRL@BMP-2@MS microspheres significantly increased osteogenic activity compared with the control group by 2.98 and 2.82 times, respectively. In conclusion, the programmed CRL@BMP-2@MS constructed in this study can realize the programmed synergistic linkage of immunity and osteogenesis, dynamically regulate bone repair, and the treatment of clinical bone repair will be based on a new strategy for diagnosis and treatment.

Objective This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary yeast hydrolysate (YH) supplementation on intestinal morphology, barrier, and anti-inflammatory functions of broilers. Methods A total of 320 one day old male broilers were randomly allocated into four groups with eight replicates of ten broilers each. The broilers were supplemented with a basal diet (the control group) or basal diets adding 50, 100, 150 mg/kg YH, respectively. This trial lasted for 42 days. Mollusk shells are characterized by hierarchical aggregation of calcium carbonate and organic matrix, and matrix protein is considered as a key active ingredient to understand shell biomineralization. In this study, a total of 21 proteins, including a novel matrix protein Hcprismatin-14 were identified in the EDTA-soluble matrix of the prismatic layer of the mussel Hyriopsis cumingii by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The full length of Hcprismatin-14 cDNA was cloned from the mantle of H. cumingii. Hcprismatin-14 contains a high proportion of Gly, Tyr, Arg and Asp residues, their concentrated distribution forms three structurally characteristic regions: a Gly/Tyr-rich region, a WDD-repeat region and a C-terminal basic tail. Hcprismatin-14 expression was high in mantle edge tissue in a tissue-specific analysis, and during disordered crystal deposition in a saibo transplantation assay. Knocking down Hcprismatin-14 expression with double-stranded RNA induced subgrains deposition inhibition and lost contact with chitinous scaffold. In addition, the WDD-repeat region polypeptide was involved in morphological regulation of calcite and had dose-dependent inhibitory activity against aragonite deposition in vitro. Based on these results, Hcprismatin-14 appears to be a dual-function prismatic-layer matrix protein, responsible for both framework recognition and crystal deposition. These findings contribute to understanding the relationship between the modular structure of matrix protein and their regulation mechanism during shell biomineralization in mollusks.

Abstract Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is the pathological basis of disc herniation, spinal stenosis, and other related diseases, and the lower back pain it produces lays a heavy financial burden on individuals and society. Thus, it is essential to comprehend IVDD's pathophysiology. Numerous factors, such as inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, apoptosis, matrix metalloproteinases, are linked to IVDD pathogenesis. Despite the fact that many researches has provided explanations for the pathophysiology of IVDD, these studies are typically singular, restricted, and isolated, expound only on one or two components, and do not systematically analyze and summarize the numerous influencing elements. In addition, we discovered that the incidence of many chronic diseases in the field of orthopedics may be thoroughly and systematically defined in terms of immunological systems. In order to provide a theoretical foundation for an in‐depth understanding of the pathological process of IVDD and the formulation of more effective prevention and treatment measures, this review provides a comprehensive and systematic account of the pathogenesis of IVDD from the physical to the molecular barriers of the intervertebral disc, from the nucleus pulposus tissue to the cellular to the immune‐molecular level.

Abstract The carboxyl terminus of Hsc70-interacting protein (CHIP), an E3 ubiquitin ligase, participates in many cellular processes such as protein degradation, trafficking, autophagy, apoptosis, and multiple signaling transductions. The mutant of CHIP (p.T246M) causes the spinocerebellar autosomal recessive 16 (SCAR16), a neurodegenerative disease characterized by spinocerebellar atrophy. Previous studies have shown that Wnt signaling and activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein (Arc) play important roles in neurodegenerative diseases. However, the mechanisms by which CHIP regulates Wnt signaling and the stability of Arc that may affect SCAR16 are still unclear. We show that overexpression of CHIP promoted the activation of Wnt signaling, and enhanced the interaction between LEF1 and β-catenin through heightening the K63-linked polyubiquitin chains attached to LEF1, while the knockdown of CHIP had the opposite effect. Moreover, we verified that Wnt signaling was inhibited in the rat models of SCAR16 induced by the CHIP (p.T246M) mutant. CHIP also accelerated the degradation of Arc and regulated the interaction between Arc and GSK3β by heightening the K48- or K63-linked polyubiquitin chains, which further potentiated the interaction between GSK3β and β-catenin. Our data identify that CHIP is an undescribed regulator of Wnt signaling and Arc stability which may be related to the occurrence of SCAR16.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient that plants require and is, most of the time, limited in different terrestrial ecosystems. Forming symbioses with plants, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi improve mineral element uptake and the net primary production of plants. Recent reports have suggested that AM fungi mediate N uptake in plants. However, there are fewer studies on the influence of AM fungi on the response of Lycium barbarum, a medicinal plant in northwest China, under different N-addition conditions. In this study, the effect of Rhizophagus irregularis, N forms (NO3− and NH4+), and N levels (1.5, 7.5, 15, 30 mM) on the performance of L. barbarum was evaluated through a pot experiment. The application of R. irregularis significantly improved L. barbarum biomass, net photosynthetic rate, and root tissue viability under adequate NO3− and NH4+ supplies, and mycorrhizal plants showed better performance under NO3− supply. AM colonization enhanced N acquisition under adequate NO3− supply and strongly induced the expression of LbAMT3-1 in L. barbarum roots. Based on these results, we propose that NO3−-dominated N supply favors mycorrhizal symbiosis to a greater extent than NH4+; this study provides a basis for maintaining beneficial AM symbiosis during nitrogen fertilizer use in arable land.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a toxic food/feed pollutant, exerting extensive deleterious impacts on the liver. Oxidative stress and inflammation are considered to be vital contributors to AFB1 hepatotoxicity. Polydatin (PD), a naturally occurring polyphenol, has been demonstrated to protect and/or treat liver disorders caused by various factors through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the role of PD in AFB1-induced liver injury is still elusive. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the protective effect of PD on hepatic injury in mice subjected to AFB1. Male mice were randomly divided into three groups: control, AFB1 and AFB1-PD groups. The results showed that PD protected against AFB1-induced hepatic injury demonstrated by the reduced serum transaminase activity, the restored hepatic histology and ultrastructure, which could be attributed to the enhanced glutathione level, the reduced interleukin 1 beta and tumor necrosis factor alpha concentrations, the increased interleukin 10 expression at transcriptional level and the up-regulated mRNA expression related to mitophagy. In conclusion, PD could alleviate AFB1-induced hepatic injury by reducing oxidative stress, inhibiting inflammation and improving mitophagy.

ABSTRACT: Yeast culture plus enzymatically hydrolyzed yeast cell wall (YC-EHY) contains crude protein, mannan-oligosaccharide, β-glucan and yeast culture. This study was carried out to explore the effects of dietary YC-EHY at different levels on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and immune function of broiler chickens. A total of 320 one-day-age male broiler chicks were allocated into 4 groups and were fed with a basal diet supplemented with 0 mg/kg (the control group), 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg YC-EHY for 42 d. Dietary YC-EHY improved average daily gain and feed efficiency during the starter, grower, and overall periods as well as average body weight of broiler chickens on 42 d (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). Broiler chickens fed with YC-EHY quadratically increased jejunal sucrase activity on 21 d (quadratic, P < 0.05), and linearly and quadratically enhanced maltase activity on 21 and 42 d (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). Supplementing YC-EHY linearly and quadratically enhanced jejunal superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity on 21 and 42 d and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity on 42 d whereas decreased malonaldehyde (MDA) concentration on 42 d (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). Consistently, the jejunal genes expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and SOD1 on 21 and 42 d, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and GPX1 on 42 d were enhanced by YC-EHY supplementation (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). The concentrations of jejunal immunoglobulin G (IgG) on 21 and 42 d and secreted immunoglobulin A (SIgA) on 42 d were linearly and quadratically elevated by supplementing YC-EHY (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). Dietary YC-EHY quadratically increased jejunal IgG and IgM genes expression on 21 d (quadratic, P < 0.05), and linearly and quadratically enhanced the genes expression of IgG and IgM on 42 d (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). Overall, this study indicated that supplementing YC-EHY could exert beneficial effects on growth performance, intestinal antioxidant capacity and immune function in broiler chickens.

Abstract Background Dexterous tool use is considered to be underpinned by model-based control relying on acquired internal models of tools. In particular, this is the case in situations where available sensory feedback regarding the consequences of tool use is restricted. In the present study, we conducted an fMRI study to identify cerebellar involvement in model-based estimation of tool-use consequences using tracking tasks with different levels of visual feedback. Methods Twenty healthy right-handed adults participated in this study. These participants tracked a moving target on a screen with a cursor controlled by a joystick using their right hand during fMRI scanning. For each trial, the level of visual feedback for cursor position was randomly selected from three task conditions, namely, Precise, Obscure, and No conditions. Results A conjunction analysis across all task conditions found extensive activation of the right cerebellum, covering the anterior lobe (lobule V) and inferior posterior lobe (lobule VIII). Also, contrasts among the three task conditions revealed additional significant activation of the left superior posterior lobe (Crus I) in the No compared to the Precise condition. Furthermore, a post hoc psychophysiological interaction analysis revealed conditional modulation of functional coupling between the right, but not the left, cerebellar region and right frontoparietal regions that are involved in self-body perception. Conclusions Our data show that the left Crus I is the only region that was more active in a condition where no visual feedback for cursor position was available. This suggests that the left Crus I region plays a role in model-based estimation of tool-use consequences based on an acquired internal model of tools.

Traditional contact voltage measurement requires a direct electrical connection to the system, which is not easy to install and maintain. The voltage measurement based on the electric field coupling plate capacitance structure does not need to be in contact with the measured object or the ground, which can avoid the above problems. However, most of the existing flat-plate structure voltage measurement sensors are not only expensive to manufacture, but also bulky, and when the relative position between the wire under test and the sensor changes, it will bring great measurement errors, making it difficult to meet actual needs. Aiming to address the above problems, this paper proposes a multi-electrode array structure non-contact voltage sensor and signal processing algorithm. The sensor is manufactured by the PCB process, which effectively reduces the manufacturing cost and process difficulty. The experimental and simulation results show that, when the relative position of the wire and the sensor is offset by 10 mm in the 45° direction, the relative error of the traditional single-electrode voltage sensor is 17.62%, while the relative error of the multi-electrode voltage sensor designed in this paper is only 0.38%. In addition, the ratio error of the sensor under the condition of power frequency of 50 Hz is less than ±1% and the phase difference is less than 4°. The experimental results show that the sensor has good accuracy and linearity.

(-)-α-Bisabolol (BIS) is a sesquiterpene alcohol derived mostly from Matricaria recutita L., which is a traditional herb and exhibits multiple biologic activities. BIS has been reported for treatment of skin disorders, but the effect of BIS on anti-atopic dermatitis (AD) remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of BIS on 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced AD in BALB/c mice and the underlying mechanism in Bone Marrow-Derived Mast Cells (BMMCs). Topical BIS treatment reduced AD-like symptoms and the release of interleukin (IL)-4 without immunoglobulin (Ig)-E production in DNCB-induced BALB/c mice. Histopathological examination revealed that BIS reduced epidermal thickness and inhibited mast cells in the AD-like lesions skin. Oral administration of BIS effectively and dose-dependently suppressed mast-cell-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. In IgE-mediated BMMCs, the levels of β-hexosaminidase (β-hex), histamine, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were reduced by blocking the activation of nuclear factor-қB (NF-қB) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) without P38 mitogen activated protein (P38) and extracellular regulated protein kinases (Erk1/2). Taken together, our experimental results indicated BIS suppresses AD by inhibiting the activation of JNK and NF-κB in mast cells. BIS may be a promising therapeutic agent for atopic dermatitis and other mast-cell-related diseases.

This paper investigates the triaxial compression behaviour of Q3 loess soil and the construction of a constitutive model accounting for the structural effect of loess on the basis of the disturbed state concept. By analyzing the triaxial compression testing results, we have established a new disturbing function with respect to the volumetric and shear moduli parameters. A research into the evolution laws of the disturbing function was also conducted, followed by the construction of a constitutive model for loess soil as well as the verification of the constitutive model with model test results. The results indicate that the double-parameter disturbing function evolves in an exponential form, capturing well the effect of moisture content and confining pressure on the loess structural behavior. The parameters of the constructed constitutive model based on the disturbed state are easy to be obtained and have clarified physical meanings. Considering the effectiveness in capturing the structural behavior of the loess, the constructed constitutive model has a great potential to be applied in the engineering practice in the loess area. The constructed constitutive model based on the disturbed state concept provides new ideas for the study of the structural constitutive model of loess, which is theoretically significant.

Nowadays, a huge number of shield-driven tunnels with noncircular cross sections are constructed in urban areas all around the world. However, the ground displacements associated with tunneling still form a difficult issue, especially for noncircular tunnels. In this study, an analytical solution is derived to estimate the ground displacements induced by the deformations of shallow noncircular tunnels in soft ground. First, a solution for the stresses and displacements around a deep tunnel in a full plane is formulated by imposing a specified convergence pattern over the cavity boundary. Subsequently, this solution is validated using finite element simulations in a case study of an elliptical tunnel with four different convergence patterns. Afterward, the solution in the full plane is extended to a half plane using the virtual image technique to estimate the ground displacements around shallow tunnels. The solution is also validated using finite element simulations.

This paper investigates the ground deformation characteristics induced by mechanized shield twin tunnelling along curved alignments by adopting the nonlinear three-dimensional (3D) finite element method (FEM). The performance of the adopted FEM is demonstrated to be satisfactory by comparing the numerical analysis results with the field monitoring data in a typical case history and with the predicted results generated by a modified version of the Peck’s empirical Gaussian formula. It has been found that the tunnelling-induced transverse ground surface settlement troughs and the distributions of the subsurface horizontal and vertical ground displacements are mostly similar in both form and magnitude for the considered various radii of curvature of tunnel alignment including 50 m, 100 m, 150 m, 200 m, 250 m, 300 m, 400 m, and infinity (i.e., straight-line tunnel). Considering the variational characteristics of the ground deformations with the magnitude of the radius of curvature, the radius of curvature of 100 m can be regarded as a critical tunnel alignment radius of curvature controlling the transformation of the curved tunnelling-induced ground deformational behaviors. For the benefit of geotechnical engineers interested in curved tunnelling with a small radius of curvature, a discussion of the technologies for reducing the overexcavation and improving the accuracy of tunnel lining segment installation is also presented.

This paper proposes a new method for predicting the displacement and internal force of constructed tunnels induced by adjacent excavation with dewatering. In this method, the total excavation-induced additional stress on the constructed tunnel is derived by superposing the additional stresses induced by excavation unloading and dewatering effects. The additional stress induced by unloading effect is calculated using Mindlin’s solution. The additional stress induced by dewatering effect is calculated using the principle of effective stress and the Dupuit precipitation funnel curve. With the beam on elastic foundation method, the total additional stress is then used for calculating the tunnel displacement and internal force caused by adjacent excavation with dewatering. Based on three well-documented case histories, the performance of the proposed method is verified. Moreover, a parametric analysis is also performed to capture the effects of excavation depth, tunnel-to-excavation distance, initial water level, excavation plan view size, and specific yield on the responses of the constructed tunnels. The results indicate that the effect of excavation depth on the tunnel maximum vertical displacement, maximum bending moment, and maximum shear force is more significant at an excavation depth greater than the cover depth of the constructed tunnel. The tunnel maximum vertical displacement, maximum bending moment, and maximum shear force decrease nonlinearly with an increase in the tunnel-to-excavation distance and the initial water level. Among the investigated parameters, the excavation dimension in the tunnel longitudinal direction affects most the tunnel responses. The effect of specific yield on the tunnel displacement and internal force induced by adjacent excavation with dewatering becomes more obvious as increasing the initial water level and excavation depth.

This paper investigates the influence of the structured property of loess on its compressive behaviour and proposes a new method for determining the preconsolidation pressure of structured loess soil. A series of oedometer tests were carried out on undisturbed and remoulded loess samples prepared at various moisture contents. The effects of moisture content on the structured yield stress, the preconsolidation pressure, and the structural strength were also captured. It was found that the influence of the structured property of loess on the compression behaviour is divergent between undisturbed and remoulded loess samples. The discrepancy before and after structural yielding is more remarkable for the undisturbed soil. The Casagrande method realized through the MATLAB program can effectively eliminate human factors and accurately calculate the corresponding preconsolidation pressure for undisturbed soil. The effects of moisture content on the method for determining the preconsolidation pressure considering the structured property of loess were discussed. The determination method can accurately evaluate the loess consolidation state in loess regions. The influencing rules which the moisture content exerts on the structured yield stress, the preconsolidation pressure, and the structural strength all conform to exponential functions. The study is of great significance to correctly differentiating the foundation consolidation states and calculating the ground settlement in loess regions.

Based on complex variable theory and conformal mapping method, the paper presents full plane elastic solutions around an unlined tunnel with arbitrary cross section in anisotropic soil. The solutions describe soil elastic solutions for assuming that the displacement vectors along the tunnel boundary are directed towards the center of the tunnel. Tunnels with different cross sections are used to illustrate the method and its correctness. An elliptical unlined tunnel case is discussed in detail in the paper. Using the image method, an approximate solution for predicting surface displacement and subsurface horizontal displacement around an unlined tunnel in anisotropic soil can be obtained. The results show anisotropic stiffness properties nn=Eh/Ev and mm=Gvh/Ev have a great effect on the displacement distribution patterns around an elliptical tunnel with certain shape.

In-air gesture interaction enables a natural communication between a man and a machine with its clear semantics and humane mode of operation. In this paper, we propose a real-time recognition system on multiple gestures in the air. It uses the commodity off-the-shelf (COTS) reader with three antennas to detect the radio frequency (RF) signals of the passive radio frequency identification (RFID) Tags attached to the fingers. The idea derives from the crucial insight that the sequential phase profile of the backscatter RF signals is a reliable and well-regulated indicator insinuating space-time situation of the tagged object, which presents a close interdependency with tag's movements and positions. The KL divergence is utilized to extract the dynamic gesture segment by confirming the endpoints of the data flow. To achieve the template matching and classification, we bring in the dynamic time warping (DTW) and k-nearest neighbors (KNN) for similarity scores calculation and appropriate gesture recognition. The experiment results show that the recognition rates for static and dynamic gestures can reach 85% and 90%, respectively. Moreover, it can maintain satisfying performance under different situations, such as diverse antenna-to-user distances and being hidden from view by nonconducting obstacles.

As an emerging paradigm enabling mobile devices to leverage additional computation resources from nearby MEC servers (MSs), mobile edge computing (MEC) has drawn great attention from academia to industry. Unlike the conventional cloud server, the MEC provides a medium-scale and portable computation ability at MSs without relying on the time-consuming and capacity-constrained backhaul. However, the MEC offloading process is still highly sensitive to the fluctuation of both radio and computing resources. In this paper, considering the independent variation of the wireless channel conditions and computing tasks, we propose a Mixed-timescale Joint Computational offloading and Wireless resource allocation (MJCW) algorithm for latency-critical applications, aiming at minimizing the total energy consumption. Through such a new approach, the original NP-hard problem is decoupled into a short-term stage problem seeking for the allocation of physical power and subcarrier and a long-term stage problem of task offloading and frequency scaling. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves excellent performance in energy saving in comparison with conventional schemes and realizes higher utilization of green energy by adjusting the energy price of MSs.

This paper analyses the stability of the Duanjiagou landslide on the Bazhong to Guangan Expressway K134−K135 segment in China. The Duanjiagou landslide took place on 4 November 2015. In order to discover the cause of the landslide, we carried out field geological investigations. The indoor physical property experiments were performed by taking the undisturbed soil sample from the borehole cores. To study the strength of the soil, we carried out a saturation direct shear test and saturation residual shear test on sliding zone soil samples. According to the physical properties of soil and the saturated shear strength parameters of sliding zone soil, the stability was analyzed by the landslide force transmission method and numerical simulation method. The results showed that in the initial sliding stage, the safety factor obtained by using the average value of saturated shear strength parameters was in good agreement with the field observation situation. The landslide was at an unstable state. The softening of soil and roadbed excavation at the foot of the slope are the main reasons for landslides.

The advent of cellular reprogramming technology has revolutionized biomedical research. De novo human cardiac myocytes can now be obtained from direct reprogramming of somatic cells (such as fibroblasts), from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs, which are reprogrammed from somatic cells), and from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Such de novo human cardiac myocytes hold great promise for in vitro disease modeling and drug screening and in vivo cell therapy of heart disease. Here, we review the technique advancements for generating de novo human cardiac myocytes. We also discuss several challenges for the use of such cells in research and regenerative medicine, such as the immature phenotype and heterogeneity of de novo cardiac myocytes obtained with existing protocols. We focus on the recent advancements in addressing such challenges.

Acupuncture and meridian channels have been major components of Chinese and Eastern Asian medicine—especially for analgesia—for over 2000 years. In recent decades, electroacupuncture (EA) analgesia has been applied clinically and experimentally. However, there were controversial results between different treatment frequencies, or between the active and the placebo treatments; and the mechanisms of the treatments and the related meridian channels are still unknown. In this study, we propose a new term of infophysics therapy and develop information models of acupuncture (or EA) analgesia and meridian channels, to understand the mechanisms and to explain the controversial results, based on Western theories of information, trigonometry and Fourier series, and physics, as well as published biomedical data. We are trying to build a bridge between Chinese medicine and Western medicine by investigating the Eastern acupuncture analgesia and meridian channels with Western sciences; we model the meridians as a physiological system that is mostly constructed with interstices in or between other physiological systems; we consider frequencies, amplitudes and wave numbers of electric field intensity (EFI) as information data. Our modeling results demonstrate that information regulated with acupuncture (or EA) is different from pain information, we provide answers to explain the controversial published results, and suggest that mechanisms of acupuncture (or EA) analgesia could be mostly involved in information regulation of frequencies and amplitudes of EFI as well as neuronal transmitters such as endorphins.
