Abstract

SPICA Science Conference from Exoplanets to Distant Galaxies: SPICA's New Window on the Cool Universe (June 18-21, 2013. Ito Hall, the University of Tokyo), Bunkyou-ku, Tokyo, Japan, SPICA Coronagraph Instrument (SCI) is an instrument dedicated for direct detection and characterization of exoplanets and also for other science that needs a high-contrast imaging and spectroscopic capability in the near to mid-infrared wavelengths. We will present the major science cases for exoplanets from the instrument proposal of SCI. Thanks to the high-contrast imaging and spectroscopic capability, we will be able to tackle the various problems on the exoplanet science. SCI will give us the unique opportunity to observationally understand the formation process of Jovian planets, which is still poorly understood, by measuring temperatures of young Jovian planets. Spectroscopy of planet atmospheres will enable us to reveal the chemical compositions by measuring the abundances of various important molecules such as CO, CH4, NH3, H2O, H2 etc. We will also access to the structure of Jovian atmosphere, for example the existence of thermal inversion which is known for our Solar system planets. Furthermore, the direct detection of icy giants around early-type stars with SCI will open a new window to investigate these enigmatic planets., 著者名の誤記: T. 4. A Search for a Near-Infrared Halo Around NGC 4565

Abstract

We present a near-infrared (3.5-5 micron) search for the integrated emission from low-mass stars and/or brown dwarfs in the halo of the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4565. The observation was made with a liquid-helium-cooled rocket-borne telescope using a 256 x 256 InSb array with a pixel scale of 17". Images of NGC 4565 were successfully obtained with sensitivity near the natural background limit. Our search reveals no evidence of a faint halo around the galaxy, in contrast with the previous reports of a halo around NGC 5907. The lower limit of the mass-to-light ratio for the halo of NGC 4565 is 260 (2 delta) in solar units at 3.5-5 microns. This implies that hydrogen-burning stars do not contribute significantly to the mass of the dark halo in NGC 4565.

Abstract

We give a detailed description of the design and flight performance of an instrument onboard the S-520-15 rocket of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. The isntrument, consisting of a near-infrared spectrometer and a far-infrared photometer at the focus of a 10 cm liquid-helium cooled telescope, was designed to observe both the brightness and distribution of diffuse emission with high sensitivity. The rocket was successfully launched and the instrument observed near-infrared and far-infrared continuum emission, as well as (C II) 157.7 micrometer line emission from regions at high Galactic latitude. We also give a brief description of the design and performance of an onboard attitude control system.

Abstract

AKARI, the Japanese infrared astronomical satellite, was launched on 2006 February 21 (UT) and put into a sun-synchronous polar orbit at an altitude of 700 km. Cosmic radiations, particularly protons in the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), were expected to affect the performance of the stressed Ge:Ga array far-infrared detector on board AKARI. One of the influences is the radioactivation of the detector housing; γ -rays from the radioactivated detector housing interact with Ge:Ga elements, producing spikes (so-called glitches) in the electric outputs of the detector. Prior to the launch, we performed a 100 MeV proton-beam irradiation test for an engineering model of the stressed Ge:Ga array, which simulated the SAA passage. In the test, we observed glitches in the detector output that were due to the radioactivation of the detector housing. By investigating the test data, we have computed the glitch rate of the flight array detector expected in the AKARI orbit, including its change with time from the launch to the end of the AKARI mission. After the launch of AKARI, we have compared the performance observed in the orbit to that predicted by the proton-beam test. The glitch rate really changed with time after the launch; we have found that the in-orbit behavior is consistent with the prediction.

第9回宇宙科学シンポジウム(2009年1月6日-7日, 宇宙航空研究開発機構宇宙科学研究本部), We report new limits on absolute brightness and fluctuations of the cosmic far-infrared background (CFIRB), on the basis of a cosmological survey in the AKARI Deep Field South (ADFS), which is the lowest cirrus density region in the whole sky, and of the cross-calibration measurements of the zodiacal emissions compared with the COBE/DIRBE results. Thanks to AKARI's capability of the absolute measurement, to accurate subtraction of the zodiacal emissions and to the field selection to cover a wide area minimizing the Galactic foreground, we have successfully detected a significant extragalactic component in the total sky brightness and its fluctuations in a wide angular range from ca. 1 arcmin to a few degrees. High angular resolution of AKARI (ca. 30") was also essential for resolving nearby galaxies and for selective extraction of the CFIRB composed of distant galaxies. The measured CFIRB brightness is significantly higher than the predicted brightness from conventional models of galaxy evolution. Power spectrum analysis for the fluctuations shows not only clear shot-noise due to individual galaxies but also a signature of galaxy clustering. International audience; The Space Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) is planned to be the next space astronomy mission observing in the infrared. The mission is planned to be launched in 2017 and will feature a 3.5 m telescope cooled to 30 microns wavelength). Abstract

We investigate the segregation of the extragalactic population via colour criteria to produce an efficient and inexpensive methodology to select specific source populations as a function of far-infrared flux. Combining galaxy evolution scenarios and a detailed spectral library of galaxies, we produce simulated catalogues incorporating segregation of the extragalactic population into component types (Normal, star-forming, AGN) via color cuts. As a practical application we apply our criteria to the deepest survey to be undertaken in the far-infrared with the AKARI (formerly ASTRO-F) satellite. Using the far-infrared wavebands of the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS, one of the focal-plane instruments on AKARI) we successfully segregate the normal, starburst and ULIRG populations. We also show that with additional MIR imaging from AKARI's Infrared Camera (IRC), significant contamination and/or degeneracy can be further decreased and show a particular example of the separation of cool normal galaxies and cold ULIRG sources. Abstract

The Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER) is a rocket-borne absolute photometry imaging and spectroscopy experiment optimized to detect signatures of first-light galaxies present during reionization in the unresolved IR background. CIBER-I consists of a wide-field two-color camera for fluctuation measurements, a low-resolution absolute spectrometer for EBL measurements, and a narrow-band imaging spectrometer to measure and correct scattered emission from the foreground zodiacal cloud. CIBER-I was successfully flown on February 25th, 2009 and is expected to be flown three more times over the next two years at six month intervals. CIBER-II is a wide-field 30 cm imager operating in 4 bands between 0.5 and 2.1 microns. It is designed for a high sigma detection of unresolved IR background fluctuations at the minimum level necessary for reionization. With an etendue (a figure-of-merit for survey studies) a factor of 50 to 500 larger than existing IR instruments on satellites, CIBER-II will carry out the definitive study to establish the surface density of sources responsible for reionization. Abstract

AKARI is a survey-oriented infrared satellite observing in the near-, mid- and far-infrared wavelengths (at the same time) with an unprecedented angular resolution. It is an ideal tool to detect dusty galaxies, often invisible or barely visible in other bands. We present the first analysis of one of the deep AKARI fields: AKARI Deep Field South (ADF-S) located close to the South Ecliptic Pole and considered to be the most ideal sky area for far-infrared extragalactic observations. We made a cross-identification of 1000 90-μm ADF-S sources, and found counterparts for 545 of them. We found that the bulk of the brightest ADF-S sources are nearby galaxies, with a high percentage of interacting and peculiar galaxies. The composition of morphological types in the sample is close to the one expected for normal optically bright galaxies. We present the properties of these galaxies and discuss how this population of FIR-bright sources differs from an average local galaxy population and how it may affect our understanding of the role of dust in the star forming galaxies. With a FOV 50 to 2000 times larger than existing IR instruments on satellites, CIBER-II will carry out the definitive study to establish the surface density of sources responsible for reionization.
