ABSTRACTPhoton extraction is one of the major issues limiting outcoupling efficiency in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). Light outcoupling in PeLEDs is typically limited by the disparity in refractive indices among the consisting layers and the difficulty of producing directed emitters in the emitting layers. Here, anisotropic nanorod-based perovskite with colloidal cesium lead bromide was introduced to address the issue via the oil–water interface chemical stripping transition method. It was confirmed that the horizontal transition dipole moments of 73% and refractive index value of 1.86 of the ANRs-based perovskites enhance outcoupling efficiency in PeLEDs. Finally, we achieved green-emitting ANR-PeLEDs with a current efficiency of 45.9 cd/A, power efficiency of 40.0 lm/W, and external quantum efficiency of 18.4% (turn-on voltage 3.3 V), with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.073, 0.71). These findings suggest further research into the anisotropic 1D shape of perovskite, which could improve the optoelectrical performance of PeLEDs.

cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) is a ubiquitously expressed nuclear transcription factor, which can be constitutively activated regardless of external stimuli or be inducibly activated by external factors such as stressors, hormones, neurotransmitters, and growth factors. However, CREB controls diverse biological processes including cell growth, differentiation, proliferation, survival, apoptosis in a cell-type-specific manner. The diverse functions of CREB appear to be due to CREB-mediated differential gene expression that depends on cAMP response elements and multi-faceted regulation of CREB activity. Indeed, the transcriptional activity of CREB is controlled at several levels including alternative splicing, post-translational modification, dimerization, specific transcriptional co-activators, non-coding small RNAs, and epigenetic regulation. In this review, we present versatile regulatory modes of CREB family transcription factors and discuss their functional consequences.

Phosphor‐sensitized fluorescent (PSF) organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) emerge as an attractive solution for realizing high‐performance displays with high color purity, meeting the Broadcast Television 2020 (BT.2020) requirements, by fully harnessing the benefits of both phosphorescent and fluorescent emitters. Herein, the synergistic effect of a Pt sensitizer and a boron (B)‐based multi‐resonance (MR)‐fluorescent emitter are introduced to enhance the efficiency of blue‐emitting PSF–OLEDs. Notably, it is confirmed that the interaction between the empty pz orbital in the boron atom of the MR emitter and the unpaired electrons in the dz2 orbital of the Pt emitter plays a crucial role. The combination results in an enhancement of the horizontal emitting dipole orientation (EDO) to 81%, a marked improvement compared to the individual components of Pt phosphor (69%) or MR emitter (78%). The synergistic approach leads to the realization of high‐performance blue‐emitting PSF‐OLEDs with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 25%, a peak intensity at 465 nm in the electroluminescence spectrum, and a full width at half maximum of 29 nm, achieved by enhancing the outcoupling. In these findings, insight is provided into design strategies for developing PSF systems based on Pt sensitizer and B‐terminal emitter to achieve efficient energy transfer as well as improved EDO.

Abstract The concept of three-dimensional stacking of device layers has attracted significant attention with the increasing difficulty in scaling down devices. Monolithic 3D (M3D) integration provides a notable benefit in achieving a higher connection density between upper and lower device layers than through-via-silicon. Nevertheless, the practical implementation of M3D integration into commercial production faces several technological challenges. Developing an upper active channel layer for device fabrication is the primary challenge in M3D integration. The difficulty arises from the thermal budget limitation for the upper channel process because a high thermal budget process may degrade the device layers below. This paper provides an overview of the potential technologies for forming active channel layers in the upper device layers of M3D integration, particularly for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor devices and digital circuits. Techniques are for polysilicon, single crystal silicon, and alternative channels, which can solve the temperature issue for the top layer process.

Objective To analyze the changes in muscle mass and quality with time on the paretic and non-paretic sides in subacute stroke patients and identify correlations between the variation of muscle mass and quality and lower limb functions. Methods Thirty hemiplegia patients diagnosed with stroke participated in this study. To evaluate poststroke muscle changes, longitudinal measurement of muscle mass and quality was conducted with bilateral lower limbs. The elastic shear modulus was measured using shear wave elastography and muscle thickness (MT) of rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius (GCM) muscles. Functional evaluation was performed using Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Five Times Sit to Stand Test (FTSST). Follow-up was performed at discharge. The muscle mass and quality were compared according to time. We analyzed whether muscle quantity and quality were related to function. Results MT demonstrated no significant change with time. The elastic shear modulus increased significantly in the paretic VL and GCM muscles and did not change significantly in the muscles on the non-paretic side. Correlation analysis detected that elastic shear modulus in the VL has a cross-sectional negative relationship between BBS and positive relationship between FTSST. There were significant correlation between variation of FTSST and the variation of the elastic shear modulus in VL. Conclusion Only paretic VL and GCM muscle quality changed in subacute stroke patients and muscle’s property related to lower limb functions. Therefore, the lower extremity requires an approach to muscle quality rather than quantity for subacute stroke patients.

Jasmonates, including jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives such as methyl jasmonate (MeJA) or jasmonly isoleucine (JA-Ile), regulate plant responses to various biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, we applied exogenous MeJA onto Senna tora leaves subjected to wounding and conducted a transcriptome deep sequencing analysis at 1 (T1), 3 (T3), 6 (T6), and 24 (T24) h after MeJA induction, along with the pretreatment control at 0 h (T0). Out of 18,883 mapped genes, we identified 10,048 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the T0 time point and at least one of the four treatment times. We detected the most DEGs at T3, followed by T6, T1, and T24. We observed the upregulation of genes related to JA biosynthesis upon exogenous MeJA application. Similarly, transcript levels of genes related to flavonoid biosynthesis increased after MeJA application and tended to reach their maximum at T6. In agreement, the flavonols kaempferol and quercetin reached their highest accumulation at T24, whereas the levels of the anthraquinones aloe-emodin, emodin, and citreorosein remained constant until T24. This study highlights an increase in flavonoid biosynthesis following both MeJA application and mechanical wounding, whereas no significant influence is observed on anthraquinone biosynthesis. These results provide insights into the distinct regulatory pathways of flavonoid and anthraquinone biosynthesis in response to MeJA and mechanical wounding.

The unintentional release of living modified organisms (LMOs) into natural environments poses potential ecological risks, particularly in terms of gene flow and biodiversity loss. Since 2009, the Ministry of Environment (MOE) in South Korea has conducted an extensive monitoring project to detect and manage LMOs, with a primary focus on LM canola. This study evaluates the outcomes of the LMO monitoring project over the past 15 years (2009–2023), analyzing the distribution, persistence, and management of LM canola across various environments. Our findings reveal that LM canola predominantly proliferates along roadsides, with occasional occurrences at festival and planting sites. Out of 10,571 monitored sites, 4326 suspicious samples were collected, with a significant increase observed in 2017, underscoring the ongoing risk of accidental releases. This study highlights the critical role of specific environments in the spread of LM canola, and assesses the effectiveness of post-management strategies in controlling these populations. The National Institute of Ecology (NIE) has developed and implemented advanced monitoring protocols and post-management systems tailored to the characteristics of the monitoring sites and the nature of the LMOs. These efforts have been effective in controlling the spread of LM canola, thereby helping to preserve the biodiversity of South Korea’s natural environments. In conclusion, the proactive and adaptive strategies employed by the NIE are essential for mitigating the ecological risks associated with LMOs. Our study emphasizes the importance of on-going vigilance and the continuous refinement of monitoring and management practices to safeguard biodiversity and ecosystems.

We examine how corporate social responsibility affects financial performance in the Korean market by examining a new set of data, the ESG score. Using panel regression models, we show that the ESG score is negatively related with a widely used measures of financial performance, ROA and Tobin’s Q, unlike extant studies arguing for the positive relationships. Among the three pillars of ESG performance, the social and governance scores robustly show negative relationships with ROA but the environmental score does not. The consideration of unique Korean governance structure, chaebol , does not change our findings. Our findings generally support the traditional view of corporations but argue against the stakeholder theory.

Abstract A novel class of o‐carboranyl luminophores, 2CB‐BuDABNA (1) and 3CB‐BuDABNA (2) is reported, in which o‐carborane moieties are incorporated at the periphery of the B,N‐doped multi‐resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR‐TADF) core. Both compounds maintain the inherent local emission characteristics of their MR‐emitting core, exhibiting intense MR‐TADF with high photoluminescence quantum yields in toluene and rigid states. In contrast, the presence of the dark lowest‐energy charge transfer state, induced by cage rotation in THF, is suggested to be responsible for emission quenching in a polar solvent. Despite the different arrangement of the cage on the DABNA core, both 1 and 2 show red‐shifted emissions compared to the parent compound BuDABNA (3). By utilizing 1 as the emitter, high‐efficiency blue organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) are achieved with a remarkable maximum external quantum efficiency of 25%, representing the highest reported efficiency for OLEDs employing an o‐carboranyl luminophore as the emitter.

We present the discovery of NGC253-SNFC-dw1, a new satellite galaxy in the remote stellar halo of the Sculptor Group spiral, NGC 253. The system was revealed using deep, resolved star photometry obtained as part of the Subaru Near-Field Cosmology Survey that uses the Hyper Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. Although rather luminous ( M _V = −11.7 ± 0.2) and massive ( M _* ∼ 1.25 × 10 ^7 M _⊙ ), the system is one of the most diffuse satellites yet known, with a half-light radius of R _h = 3.37 ± 0.36 kpc and an average surface brightness of ∼30.1 mag arcmin ^−2 within the R _h . The color–magnitude diagram shows a dominant, old (∼10 Gyr), and metal-poor ([M/H] = −1.5 ± 0.1 dex) stellar population, as well as several candidate thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars. The distribution of red giant branch stars is asymmetrical and displays two elongated tidal extensions pointing toward NGC 253, suggestive of a highly disrupted system being observed at apocenter. NGC253-SNFC-dw1 has a size comparable to that of the puzzling Local Group dwarfs Andromeda XIX and Antlia 2 but is 2 magnitudes brighter. While unambiguous evidence of tidal disruption in these systems has not yet been demonstrated, the morphology of NGC253-SNFC-dw1 clearly shows that this is a natural path to produce such diffuse and extended galaxies. The surprising discovery of this system in a previously well-searched region of the sky emphasizes the importance of surface-brightness limiting depth in satellite searches.

Abstract Particulate matter (PM) in the environment can adversely affect the health of living things. However, high removal efficiency and low-pressure loss are crucial design challenges for any air filtration system. To circumvent the challenge, here, we demonstrate a novel triboelectric (TE) air filtration system that is based on a rotation-type triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and a filter comprising two sets of plates: primary and secondary, that are placed in the airflow channel. When the TENG charges the two plate sets with opposite charges, the flowing air particles are charged at the primary plates and are collected, due to an electric field, at the secondary plates. The TE filter has demonstrated a PM2.5 removal efficiency of ~ 99.97% for the fine dust particles, and it remains stable even after several washing cycles. The pressure loss is almost two orders less than the high-efficiency particulate air filter. Since the airflow itself can drive the TENG, the TE filter can potentially be integrated with any air conditioning system for fine dust filtration in offices, automobiles, etc.

Future satellite missions are expected to perform all-sky surveys, thus providing the entire sky near-infrared spectral data and consequently opening a new window to investigate the evolution of galaxies. Specifically, the infrared spectral data facilitate the precise estimation of stellar masses of numerous low-redshift galaxies. We utilize the synthetic spectral energy distribution (SED) of 2853 nearby galaxies drawn from the DustPedia (435) and Stripe 82 regions (2418). The stellar mass-to-light ratio ( M _* / L ) estimation accuracy over a wavelength range of 0.75−5.0 μ m is computed through the SED fitting of the multiwavelength photometric data set, which has not yet been intensively explored in previous studies. We find that the scatter in M _* / L is significantly larger in the shorter and longer wavelength regimes due to the effect of the young stellar population and the dust contribution, respectively. While the scatter in M _* / L approaches its minimum (∼0.10 dex) at ∼1.6 μ m, it remains sensitive to the adopted star formation history model. Furthermore, M _* / L demonstrates weak and strong correlations with the stellar mass and the specific star formation rate (SFR), respectively. Upon adequately correcting the dependence of M _* / L on the specific SFR, the scatter in the M _* / L further reduces to 0.02 dex at ∼1.6 μ m. This indicates that the stellar mass can be estimated with an accuracy of ∼0.02 dex with a prior knowledge of SFR, which can be estimated using the infrared spectra obtained with future survey missions.

A recent study from the Horizon Run 5 (HR5) cosmological simulation has predicted that galaxies with $\mathrm{log}\,{M}_{* }/{M}_{\odot }\lesssim 10$ in the cosmic morning (10 ≳ z ≳ 4) dominantly have disk-like morphology in the ΛCDM universe, which is driven by the tidal torque in the initial fluctuations of matter. For a direct comparison with observation we identify a total of about 19,000 James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) galaxies with $\mathrm{log}\,{M}_{* }/{M}_{\odot }\gt 9$ at z = 0.6–8.0 utilizing deep JWST/NIRCam images of publicly released fields, including North Ecliptic Pole Time-Domain Fields, Next Generation Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Public survey, Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey, Cosmic Evolution Survey, UltraDeep Survey, and SMACS J0723-7327. We estimate their stellar masses and photometric redshifts with the redshift dispersion of σ _NMAD = 0.009 and an outlier fraction of only about 6%. We classify galaxies into three morphological types, disks, spheroids , and irregulars , applying the same criteria used in the HR5 study. The morphological distribution of the JWST galaxies shows that disk galaxies account for 60%–70% at all redshift ranges. However, in the high-mass regime ( $\mathrm{log}\,{M}_{* }/{M}_{\odot }\gtrsim 11$ ), spheroidal morphology becomes the dominant type. This implies that the mass growth of galaxies is accompanied by a morphological transition from disks to spheroids. The fraction of irregulars is about 20% or less at all masses and redshifts. All the trends in the morphology distribution are consistently found in the six JWST fields. These results are in close agreement with the results from the HR5 simulation, particularly confirming the prevalence of disk galaxies at small masses in the cosmic morning and noon.

Abstract Background Advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have made it possible to find the vertebral body bruise (VBB), which was not found in computed tomography (CT) after trauma. There has been only one study with adult patients about whether traumatic VBB will cause a collapse of the vertebral body or not. The purpose is to elucidate the progression of VBB in non-osteoporotic adult patients and to identify the possible factors influencing the progression. Method The VBB was defined on MRI as band-like or diffuse zones of high signal intensity on T2-weighted sequences without fracture of the cortex based on CT. The study population with traumatic VBB associated with non-osteoporotic spinal fracture was composed of 15 females and 21 males. The minimal follow-up period was 6 months. The ratio of anterior to posterior heights of the VBB, the ratio of anterior heights of the VBB to the average of those of cranial and caudal adjacent vertebral bodies, the anterior wedge angle of the VBB, and the focal angle around the VBB were compared between the initial and final visits. We evaluated the age of the patients, the C2 plumb line distance, the regional location of VBB, the etiology of VBB, and the treatment methods of the fractures as possible risk factors influencing the progression. Results There was no difference in the ratios and angles between the initial and final visits. The differences in the ratios and angles between the initial and final visits were not dependent on the possible risk factors. The anterior superior area is the most common in the distribution of VBB. Conclusions Unlike compression fractures, the vertebral body with traumatic VBB found in adult patients with non-osteoporotic spinal fractures of AO classification A or B types did not develop collapse. In clinical practice, it is reasonable to diagnose it as a spinal fracture rather than a VBB if the collapse of a possible VBB occurs.

Plants, as sessile organisms, show a high degree of plasticity in their growth and development and have various strategies to cope with these alterations under continuously changing environments and unfavorable stress conditions. In particular, the floral transition from the vegetative and reproductive phases in the shoot apical meristem (SAM) is one of the most important developmental changes in plants. In addition, meristem regions, such as the SAM and root apical meristem (RAM), which continually generate new lateral organs throughout the plant life cycle, are important sites for developmental plasticity. Recent findings have shown that the prevailing type of alternative splicing (AS) in plants is intron retention (IR) unlike in animals; thus, AS is an important regulatory mechanism conferring plasticity for plant growth and development under various environmental conditions. Although eukaryotes exhibit some similarities in the composition and dynamics of their splicing machinery, plants have differences in the 3’ splicing characteristics governing AS. Here, we summarize recent findings on the roles of 3’ splicing factors and their interacting partners in regulating the flowering time and other developmental plasticities in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The process of the aqueous synthesis of nanomaterials has gained considerable interest due to its ability to eliminate the need for complex organic solvents, which aligns with the principles of green chemistry. Fabricating nanostructures in aqueous solutions has gained recognition for its potential to develop ultrasensitive, low-energy, and ultrafast optoelectronic devices. This study focuses on synthesizing lead iodide (PbI2) nanoplates (NPs) using a water-based solution technique and fabricating a planar photodetector. The planar photodetectors (ITO/PbI2 NPs/Au) demonstrated a remarkable photosensitivity of 3.9 × 103 and photoresponsivity of 0.51 mA/W at a wavelength of 405 nm. Further, we have carried-out analytical calculations for key performance parameters including open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current (Isc), on-off ratio, responsivity (R), and specific detectivity (D*) at zero applied bias, while photodetector operating in self-powered mode. These values are as follows: Voc = 0.103 V, Isc = 1.93 × 10−8, on-off ratio = 103, R = 4.0 mA/W, and D* = 3.3 × 1011 Jones. Particularly, the asymmetrical output properties of ITO/PbI2 NPs/Au detector provided additional evidence of the effective creation of a Schottky contact. Therefore, the photodetector exhibited a photo-response even at 0 V bias (rise/decay time ~1 s), leading to the realization of self-powered photodetectors. Additionally, the device exhibited a rapid photo-response of 0.23/0.38 s (−5 V) in the visible range. This study expands the scope of aqueous-phase synthesis of PbI2 nanostructures, enabling the large-area fabrication of high-performance photodetectors.

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays have attracted much attention as displays for small form factor augmented reality (AR) devices. To realize glass-like thin and wide field of view (FoV) AR devices, we designed a display module with a high aspect ratio microdisplay and a thin optical component. For the high aspect ratio microdisplay, we developed the color OLED microdisplay with a 32:9 aspect ratio and a 0.8-inch diagonal ∼2,490-ppi CMOS backplane. To express color and reduce optical crosstalk, we fabricated the color filter (C/F) patterning directly on the white OLED. We also developed a pin mirror lens with 11 pin mirrors to improve the optical efficiency and quality with a thin lens. By combining the microdisplay with LetinAR’s pin mirror lens, we successfully demonstrated an AR device with a wide horizontal FoV of 46° but with a small form factor 4 mm lens.

Air-transmitted pathogens are a recognized threat to public health. Here, the authors develop a self-powered, rapid disinfection method toward air-transmitted microbes using the localized electric field to damage the outer structures of microbes driven by a triboelectric nanogenerator.

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is an excellent source of protein, oil, carbohydrates and many other bioactive ingredients for humans. However, several antinutritional and allergenic components such as lipoxygenase, KTI, lectin, 7S α′ subunit, and stachyose exist in the raw mature seed. Genetic removal of these components would be the best method to improve soybean food quality. The objectives of this research were to breed a new soybean line with penta null recessive alleles (lox1/lox1/lox2/lox2/lox3/lox3-ti/ti-le/le-cgy1/cgy1-rs2/rs2) for these five components and to evaluate agronomic traits for a breeding line with penta null alleles. Seven germplasms were used to breed the penta null strain. Analysis of lipoxygenase, KTI, lectin, 7S α′ subunit, and stachyose components in mature seeds was conducted by SDS-PAGE, western blot, and HPLC. One breeding line with penta null recessive alleles was developed. The breeding line has purple flowers, tawny pubescence, a determinate growth habit, and light yellow pods at maturity. The seed of the breeding line has a yellow hilum and yellow seed coat color. The stem height of the breeding line was 53.0 cm. The stachyose content of the breeding line was 2.9 g/kg. The 100-seed weight of the breeding line was 31.1 g and yield (t/ha) was 2.80. This is the first soybean strain with the penta null (lox1lox2lox3/lox1lox2lox3-ti/ti-le/le-cgy1/cgy1-rs2/rs2) genotype (free of lipoxygenase, KTI, lectin, and 7S α′ subunit proteins, and with low stachyose content).

Cesium lead iodide (CsPbI3) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are a promising material for red-light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their excellent color purity and high luminous efficiency. However, small-sized CsPbI3 colloidal NCs, such as nanocubes, used in LEDs suffer from confinement effects, negatively impacting their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and overall efficiency. Here, we introduced YCl3 into the CsPbI3 perovskite, which formed anisotropic, one-dimensional (1D) nanorods. This was achieved by taking advantage of the difference in bond energies among iodide and chloride ions, which caused YCl3 to promote the anisotropic growth of CsPbI3 NCs. The addition of YCl3 significantly improved the PLQY by passivating nonradiative recombination rates. The resulting YCl3-substituted CsPbI3 nanorods were applied to the emissive layer in LEDs, and we achieved an external quantum efficiency of ~3.16%, which is 1.86-fold higher than the pristine CsPbI3 NCs (1.69%) based LED. Notably, the ratio of horizontal transition dipole moments (TDMs) in the anisotropic YCl3:CsPbI3 nanorods was found to be 75%, which is higher than the isotropically-oriented TDMs in CsPbI3 nanocrystals (67%). This increased the TDM ratio and led to higher light outcoupling efficiency in nanorod-based LEDs. Overall, the results suggest that YCl3-substituted CsPbI3 nanorods could be promising for achieving high-performance perovskite LEDs.

We investigated the transcriptomic changes in the shoot apices during floral transition in Arabidopsis mutants of two closely related splicing factors: AtU2AF65a (atu2af65a) and AtU2AF65b (atu2af65b). The atu2af65a mutants exhibited delayed flowering, while the atu2af65b mutants showed accelerated flowering. The underlying gene regulatory mechanism of these phenotypes was unclear. We performed RNA-seq analysis using shoot apices instead of whole seedlings and found that the atu2af65a mutants had more differentially expressed genes than the atu2af65b mutants when they were compared to wild type. The only flowering time gene that was significantly up- or down-regulated by more than two-fold in the mutants were FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC), a major floral repressor. We also examined the expression and alternative splicing (AS) patterns of several FLC upstream regulators, such as COOLAIR, EDM2, FRIGIDA, and PP2A-b’ɤ, and found that those of COOLAIR, EDM2, and PP2A-b’ɤ were altered in the mutants. Furthermore, we demonstrated that AtU2AF65a and AtU2AF65b genes partially influenced FLC expression by analyzing these mutants in the flc-3 mutant background. Our findings indicate that AtU2AF65a and AtU2AF65b splicing factors modulate FLC expression by affecting the expression or AS patterns of a subset of FLC upstream regulators in the shoot apex, leading to different flowering phenotypes.

Class III peroxidases (PRXs) are involved in a broad spectrum of physiological and developmental processes throughout the life cycle of plants. However, the specific function of each PRX member in the family remains largely unknown. In this study, we selected four class III peroxidase genes (PRX2/ATPRX1, PRX8, PRX35, and PRX73) from a previous genome-wide transcriptome analysis, and performed phenotypic and morphological analyses, including histochemical staining, in PRX2RNAi, PRX8RNAi, PRX35RNAi, and PRX73RNAi plants. The reduced mRNA levels of corresponding PRX genes in PRX2RNAi, PRX8RNAi, PRX35RNAi, and PRX73RNAi seedlings resulted in elongated hypocotyls and roots, and slightly faster vegetative growth. To investigate internal structural changes in the vasculature, we performed histochemical staining, which revealed alterations in cell wall structures in the main vasculature of hypocotyls, stems, and roots of each PRXRNAi plant compared to wild-type (Col-0) plants. Furthermore, we found that PRX35RNAi plants displayed the decrease in the cell wall in vascular regions, which are involved in downregulation of lignin biosynthesis and biosynthesis-regulated genes’ expression. Taken together, these results indicated that the reduced expression levels of PRX2/ATPRX1, PRX8, PRX35, and PRX73 affected hypocotyl and root elongation, vegetative growth, and the vasculature structures in hypocotyl, stem, and root tissues, suggesting that the four class III PRX genes play roles in plant developmental processes.

cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) is a ubiquitously expressed nuclear transcription factor, which can be constitutively activated regardless of external stimuli or be inducibly activated by external factors such as stressors, hormones, neurotransmitters, and growth factors. However, CREB controls diverse biological processes including cell growth, differentiation, proliferation, survival, apoptosis in a cell-type-specific manner. The diverse functions of CREB appear to be due to CREB-mediated differential gene expression that depends on cAMP response elements and multi-faceted regulation of CREB activity. Indeed, the transcriptional activity of CREB is controlled at several levels including alternative splicing, post-translational modification, dimerization, specific transcriptional co-activators, non-coding small RNAs, and epigenetic regulation. Microdisplay is a key technology for realizing augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) devices, which have attracted much attention of late. Even though the operating voltage in the tandem structure is higher than that in the single structure, 2-stack tandem OLED exhibited 20,000 cd/m2 at 9 V, which is compatible with CMOS circuit driving. Due to its top-emitting geometry with a tandem structure, the OLED device with a well-controlled thickness exhibited a white spectrum with (0.26, 0.26) color coordinates. The pixel density of the fabricated microdisplay panel with a white tandem OLED was about 2350 pixels per inch, and the active area of the panel was 0.7 inch diagonally. The resolution of the panel was 1280 × 1024, corresponding to SXGA, and the maximal luminance was 3,000 cd/m2.

Abstract Metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are emerging as a promising candidate for next-generation optoelectronic devices. The efficiency of PeLEDs has developed explosively in a short time, but their overall efficiency is still low. This is strongly related to the high refractive indexes of indium-tin-oxide (ITO) and perovskite emitting layers. Various outcoupling strategies are being introduced to outcouple the light trapped inside the layers. However, the proposed methods have experimental challenges that need to be overcome for application to large-area electronics. Based on optical simulations, we demonstrate that the thicknesses of the ITO and perovskite layers are key parameters to improve the outcoupling efficiency of PeLEDs. In addition, the optical energy losses of PeLEDs can be reduced significantly by properly adjusting the thicknesses of the two layers. This leads to outstanding optical performance with a maximum EQE greater than 20% without using any other external outcoupling strategies.

Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) is widely cultivated and studied for its psychoactive and medicinal properties. As the major cannabinoids are present in acidic forms in Cannabis plants, non-enzymatic processes, such as decarboxylation, are crucial for their conversion to neutral active cannabinoid forms. Herein, we detected the levels of cannabidivarin (CBDV), cannabidiol (CBD), cannabichromene (CBC), and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) in the leaves and vegetative shoots of five commercial Cannabis cultivars using a combination of relatively simple extraction, decarboxylation, and high-performance liquid chromatography analyses. The CBDV, CBC, and Δ9-THC levels were 6.3–114.9, 34.4–187.2, and 57.6–407.4 μg/g, respectively, and the CBD levels were the highest, ranging between 1.2–8.9 μg/g in leaf and vegetative shoot tissues of Cannabis cultivars. Additionally, correlations were observed between cannabinoid accumulation and transcription levels of genes encoding key enzymes for cannabinoid biosynthesis, including CsCBGAS, CsCBDAS, CsCBCAS, and CsTHCAS. These data suggest that the high accumulation of cannabinoids, such as CBC, Δ9-THC, and CBD, might be derived from the transcriptional regulation of CsCBGAS and CsCBDAS in Cannabis plants.

The emergence of genome-editing technology has allowed manipulation of DNA sequences in genomes to precisely remove or replace specific sequences in organisms resulting in targeted mutations. In plants, genome editing is an attractive method to alter gene functions to generate improved crop varieties. Genome editing is thought to be simple to use and has a lower risk of off-target effects compared to classical mutation breeding. Furthermore, genome-editing technology tools can also be applied directly to crops that contain complex genomes and/or are not easily bred using traditional methods. Currently, highly versatile genome-editing tools for precise and predictable editing of almost any locus in the plant genome make it possible to extend the range of application, including functional genomics research and molecular crop breeding. Vegetables are essential nutrient sources for humans and provide vitamins, minerals, and fiber to diets, thereby contributing to human health. In this review, we provide an overview of the brief history of genome-editing technologies and the components of genome-editing tool boxes, and illustrate basic modes of operation in representative systems. We describe the current and potential practical application of genome editing for the development of improved nutritious vegetables and present several case studies demonstrating the potential of the technology. Finally, we highlight future directions and challenges in applying genome-editing systems to vegetable crops for research and product development.

Quantum dots (QDs) have an unparalleled ability to mimic true colors due to their size-tunable optical and electronic properties, which make them the most promising nanoparticles in various fields. Currently, the majority of QDs available in the market are cadmium, indium, and lead-based materials but the toxicity and unstable nature of these QDs restricts their industrial and practical applications. To avoid using heavy metal ions, especially cadmium, the current research is focused on the fabrication of perovskite and vanadate QDs. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a novel and cost-effective CsVO3 QDs for the first time. The sizes of the CsVO3 QDs produced were tuned from 2 to 10 nm by varying the reaction temperature from 140 to 190 °C. On increasing QD size, a continuous red shift was observed in absorption and emission spectra, signifying the presence of quantum confinement. In addition, along with CsVO3 QDs, the CsVO3 nanosheets self-assembled microflower-like particles were found as residue after the centrifugation; the X-ray diffraction indicated an orthorhombic structure. Under 365 nm excitation, these CsVO3 microflower-like particles exhibited broad emission with CIE coordinates in the white emission region. The acquired results suggest that CsVO3 QDs may represent a new class of cadmium-free materials for optoelectronic and biomedical applications.

Small changes in temperature affect plant ecological and physiological factors that impact agricultural production. Hence, understanding how temperature affects flowering is crucial for decreasing the effects of climate change on crop yields. Recent reports have shown that FLM-β, the major spliced isoform of FLOWERING LOCUS M (FLM)—a flowering time gene, contributes to temperature-responsive flowering in Arabidopsis thaliana. However, the molecular mechanism linking pre-mRNA processing and temperature-responsive flowering is not well understood. Genetic and molecular analyses identified the role of an Arabidopsis splicing factor SF1 homolog, AtSF1, in regulating temperature-responsive flowering. The loss-of-function AtSF1 mutant shows temperature insensitivity at different temperatures and very low levels of FLM-β transcript, but a significantly increased transcript level of the alternative splicing (AS) isoform, FLM-δ. An RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay revealed that AtSF1 is responsible for ambient temperature-dependent AS of FLM pre-mRNA, resulting in the temperature-dependent production of functional FLM-β transcripts. Moreover, alterations in other splicing factors such as ABA HYPERSENSITIVE1/CBP80 (ABH1/CBP80) and STABILIZED1 (STA1) did not impact the FLM-β/FLM-δ ratio at different temperatures. Taken together, our data suggest that a temperature-dependent interaction between AtSF1 and FLM pre-mRNA controls flowering time in response to temperature fluctuations.

The stability of doped organic semiconductors is one of the essential features to achieve stable and high-performance organic optoelectronic devices with low power consumption. In this study, the thermal degradation of an organic homojunction, consisting of an intrinsic organic layer and a molybdenum oxide (MoO3)-doped organic layer, is investigated by impedance spectroscopy (IS) under thermal heating. The IS analysis indicates that the thermal deformation of the intrinsic organic layer is more significant than that of the underlying doped organic layer. A charge-transfer complex absorption peak analysis by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy confirms that the thermal degradation is related to the deformation of organic host molecules rather than to diffusion of dopants. These results show that the organic homojunction is degraded owing to the crystallization of intrinsic organic molecules at high temperatures, above the glass transition temperature (Tg), rather than because of disruption of the interface at the homojunction by dopant diffusion. This study shows that hole-transport molecules having high Tg should be selected to provide stable electronic devices with organic homojunctions, thus paving the way for the development of novel devices with higher performance.

Background Benzalkonium chloride (BAK), commonly used in glaucoma treatment, is an eye drop preservative with dose-dependent toxicity. Previous studies have observed the multi-functional benefits of angiogenin (ANG) against glaucoma. In our study, we evaluated ANG’s cytoprotective effect on the trabecular meshwork (TM) damage induced by BAK. Additionally, we developed a plant-derived ANG fusion protein and evaluated its effect on TM structure and function. Methods We synthesized plant-derived ANG (ANG-FcK) by fuzing immunoglobulin G’s Fc region and KDEL to conventional recombinant human ANG (Rh-ANG) purified from transgenic tobacco plants. We established a mouse model using BAK to look for degenerative changes in the TM, and to evaluate the protective effects of ANG-FcK and Rh-ANG. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured for 4 weeks and ultrastructural changes, deposition of fluorescent microbeads, type I and IV collagen, fibronectin, laminin and α-SMA expression were analyzed after the mice were euthanized. Results TM structural and functional degeneration were induced by 0.1% BAK instillation in mice. ANG co-treatment preserved TM outflow function, which we measured using IOP and a microbead tracer. ANG prevented phenotypic and ultrastructure changes, and that protective effect might be related to the anti-fibrosis mechanism. We observed a similar cytoprotective effect in the BAK-induced degenerative TM mouse model, suggesting that plant-derived ANG-FcK could be a promising glaucoma treatment.

We investigated the optical reflectance, surface roughness, and sheet resistance of aluminum (Al)/titanium nitride (TiN), titanium (Ti), and tungsten (W) layers on Si substrates, which are available in the CMOS foundry, for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays. The devices with different metal anode layers exhibited different hole-injection properties and OLED performances, owing to the different optical and electrical properties of metal anode layers. Based on the OLED characteristics, the Al/TiN layer was selected as an anode layer for OLED microdisplays. A green monochromatic OLED microdisplay panel was designed and implemented using the 0.11-μm CMOS process. The density of pixels was ~2 351 pixels per inch and the panel's active area was 0.7 in in diagonal. The resolution of the panel was 1 280 × 3 × 1 024, corresponding to SXGA. The panel was successfully operated, and the maximal luminance was ~460 cd/m2.

Abstract Background Binding of transcription factors to their target sequences is a primary step in the regulation of gene expression and largely determines gene regulatory networks. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) is an indispensable tool used to investigate the binding of DNA-binding proteins (e.g., transcription factors) to their target sequences in vivo. ChIP assays require specific antibodies that recognize endogenous target transcription factors; however, in most cases, such specific antibodies are unavailable. To overcome this problem, many ChIP assays use transgenic plants that express epitope-tagged transcription factors and immunoprecipitate the protein with a tag-specific antibody. However, generating transgenic plants that stably express epitope-tagged proteins is difficult and time-consuming. Results Here, we present a rapid, efficient ChIP protocol using transient expression in Arabidopsis mesophyll protoplasts that can be completed in 4 days. We provide optimized experimental conditions, including the amount of transfected DNA and the number of protoplasts. We also show that the efficiency of our ChIP protocol using protoplasts is comparable to that obtained using transgenic Arabidopsis plants. We propose that our ChIP method can be used to analyze in vivo interactions between tissue-specific transcription factors and their target sequences, to test the effect of genotype on the binding of a transcription factor within a protein complex to its target sequences, and to measure temperature-dependent binding of a transcription factor to its target sequence. Conclusions The rapid and simple nature of our ChIP assay using Arabidopsis mesophyll protoplasts facilitates the investigation of in vivo interactions between transcription factors and their target genes.

Charge carrier mobility is one of the key parameters that are used to evaluate the electrical quality of thin film semiconductors, whilst it is easily overestimated. Here, Rolinet al. use the gated van der Pauw method to extract charge mobility independent of contact resistance and device dimensions.

Purpose: We have always used the standard anatomical landmark vertebrae to measure the sagittal alignment. Instead, scoliosis has been evaluated by the end vertebrae in the coronal plane. There have been clinical studies to investigate sagittal alignment on the end vertebrae of inflection points (IPs). The purpose is to determine sagittal alignment based on IPs and to elucidate the changes while considering age groups. Methods: We identified the most titled vertebrae in the sagittal plane to define the end vertebrae of S1, thoracolumbar and cervicothoracic IPs and to measure the Cobb angles of sacral slope, functional lumbar, thoracic, cervical segment between them, and the McGregor’s line, and the IP distances from the C2 plumb line to the point bisecting the upper end plate of the IPs, in addition to S1. Results: The most common thoracolumbar and cervicothoracic IPs were L2 and T1, respectively. However, the next most common cervicothoracic IP changed from T2 in the youngest to C7 in the oldest age group. The sagittal angles decreased at the sacral slope and functional lumbar segment but not the functional thoracic segment and functional cervical segment. Similarly, the distance increased at the C2 sagittal vertical axis (SVA) distance to S1 and thoracolumbar IP distance but not at the cervicothoracic IP distance. There was no difference in the pelvic incidence among age groups. Conclusion: The sagittal Cobb angles based on the IPs decreased at the sacral slope and functional lumbar segment in the older adults. Consequently, the C2 SVA distance to S1 and thoracolumbar IP distance increased.

During pre-mRNA splicing, U2 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein auxiliary factor 65 (U2AF65) interacts with U2AF35 and splicing factor 1 (SF1), allowing for the recognition of the 3′-splice site by the ternary complex. The functional characterization of U2AF65 homologs has not been performed in Arabidopsis thaliana yet. Here, we show that normal plant development, including floral transition, and male gametophyte development, requires two Arabidopsis U2AF65 isoforms (AtU2AF65a and AtU2AF65b). Loss-of-function mutants of these two isoforms displayed opposite flowering phenotypes: atu2af65a mutants showed late flowering, whereas atu2af65b mutants were characterized by slightly early flowering, as compared to that in the wild-type (Col-0) plants. These abnormal flowering phenotypes were well-correlated with the expression patterns of the flowering time genes such as FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) and FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT). However, the two atu2af65 mutants did not display any morphological abnormalities or alterations in abiotic stress tests. Double mutation of the AtU2AF65a and AtU2AF65b genes resulted in non-viable seeds due to defective male gametophyte. In vitro pollen germination test revealed that mutations in both AtU2AF65a and AtU2AF65b genes significantly impaired pollen tube growth. Collectively, our findings suggest that two protein isoforms of AtU2AF65 are differentially involved in regulating flowering time and display a redundant role in pollen tube growth.

As contemporary emerging materials, fiber-reinforced plastics/polymers (FRP) are widely used in aerospace automotive industries and in other fields due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, high stiffness-to-weight ratio, high corrosion resistance, low thermal expansion and other properties. Drilling is the most frequently used process in industrial operation for polymer composite laminates, owing to the need for joining structures. However, it is a great challenge for operators to drill holes in FRP materials, due to the non-homogenous and anisotropic properties of fibers. Various damages, such as delamination, hole shrinkage, and burr and tool wear, occur due to the heterogeneous and anisotropic nature of composite laminates. Therefore, in this study, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)/aramid fiber reinforced polymer (AFRP) hybrid composites (C-AFRP) were successfully synthesized, and their drilling characteristics, including burr generation and tool wear, were also mainly investigated. The drilling characteristics of CFRP and C-AFRP were compared and analyzed for the first time under the same operating conditions (cutting tool, spindle speed, feed rate). The experimental results demonstrated that C-AFRP had higher tensile strength and good drilling characteristics (low thrust and less tool wear) compared with CFRP. As a lightweight and high-strength structural material, C-AFRP hybrid composites have great potential applications in the automobile and aerospace industries after the slight processing of burrs generated during drilling.

Pancreatic pseudoaneurysm is a potentially life-threatening complication often associated with pancreatitis or pancreatic surgery. As the rupture of pancreatic pseudoaneurysms can lead to catastrophic bleeding and is associated with high mortality rates, clinical suspicion and early diagnosis are essential to improve patient outcomes. In the management of pseudoaneurysms, transarterial embolization (TAE) could be effective; however, there have been limited local studies on the outcomes of TAE for patients with pseudoaneurysm rupture associated with pancreatitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the shape and attachment position of stretchable textile piezoresistive sensors coated with single-walled carbon nanotubes on their performance in measuring the joint movements of children. The requirements for fabric motion sensors suitable for children are also identified. The child subjects were instructed to wear integrated clothing with sensors of different shapes (rectangular and boat-shaped), attachment positions (at the knee and elbow joints or 4 cm below the joints). The change in voltage caused by the elongation and contraction of the fabric sensors was measured for the flexion-extension motions of the arms and legs at 60°/s (three measurements of 10 repetitions each for the 60° and 90° angles, for a total of 60 repetitions). Their reliability was verified by analyzing the agreement between the fabric motion sensors and attached acceleration sensors. The experimental results showed that the fabric motion sensor that can measure children’s arm and leg motions most effectively is the rectangular-shaped sensor attached 4 cm below the joint. In this study, we developed a textile piezoresistive sensor suitable for measuring the joint motion of children, and analyzed the shape and attachment position of the sensor on clothing suitable for motion sensing. We showed that it is possible to sense joint motions of the human body by using flexible fabric sensors integrated into clothing.

As calcium sensor relays in plants, calcineurin B-like (CBL) proteins provide an important contribution to decoding Ca2+ signatures elicited by a variety of abiotic stresses. Currently, it is well known that CBLs perceive and transmit the Ca2+ signals mainly to a group of serine/threonine protein kinases called CBL-interacting protein kinases (CIPKs). In this study, we report that the CBL10 member of this family has a novel interaction partner besides the CIPK proteins. Yeast two-hybrid screening with CBL10 as bait identified an Arabidopsis cDNA clone encoding a TOC34 protein, which is a member of the TOC (Translocon of the Outer membrane of the Chloroplasts) complex and possesses the GTPase activity. Further analyses showed that in addition to CBL10, CBL7 also interacts with TOC34 at much lower strength in the yeast two-hybrid system. However, the rest of the CBL family members failed to interact with TOC34. Bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) analysis verified that the CBL10-TOC34 interaction occurs at the outer membrane of chloroplasts in vivo. In addition, we also demonstrated that CBL10 physically associates with TOC34 in vitro, resulting in a significant decrease in the GTPase activity of the TOC34 protein. Taken together, our findings clearly indicate that a member of the CBL family, CBL10, can modulate not only the CIPK members but also TOC34, allowing the CBL family to relay the calcium signals in more diverse ways than currently known.

High expression of osmotically responsive genes1 (HOS1), akey regulator of low temperature response and flowering time,encodes an E3 ubiquitin ligase in Arabidopsis. Here, we reportcharacterization of a newly identified splice variant (HOS1-L)of HOS1. Comparative analyses revealed that HOS1-L has alonger 5' nucleotide sequence than that of the previouslyidentified HOS1 (HOS1-S) and that its protein sequence wasmore conserved than that of HOS1-S in plants. HOS1-Ltranscripts were spatio-temporally more abundant than thoseof HOS1-S. The recovery rate of HOS1-S expression was fasterthan that of HOS1-L after cold treatment. Diurnal oscillationpatterns of HOS1-L revealed that HOS1-L expression wasaffected by photoperiod. An in vitro pull-down assay revealedthat the HOS1-L protein interacted with the ICE1 protein.HOS1-L overexpression caused delayed flowering in wild-typeplants. Collectively, these results suggest regulation of HOS1expression at the post-transcriptional level.

Objectives: There is no report on treatment of acute traumatic rotator cuff tear in Traditional Korean Medicine. We reported Traditional Korean Treatment for pain relief and better movement of acute traumatic rotator cuff tear. Methods: Shoulder MRI was used to confirm the diagnosis of tear of rotator cuff. The patient was treated with Traditional Korean Methods (Acupuncture, Herbal medicine, Pharmacopuncture) for 6 months. We evaluated the patient through VAS (Visual Analogue Scale), UCLA shoulder scale, ROM (Range of motion) and Shoulder MRI. Results: After 6 months of treatment, the patient's VAS was decreased whereas UCLA score and Shoulder ROM were increased. Rotator cuff tear was repaired on Shoulder MRI images. Conclusions: In acute traumatic rotator cuff tear, Korean Traditional Treatment is good method for pain relief and better movement.

Objective : This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Benincasae Semen Herbal-acupuncture (BSHA) at KI10 (Umgok) on nephritis induced by LPS in rat. Methods : Rats with nephritis induced by LPS, were treated with Benincasae Semen Herbal-acupuncture(BS-HA) injection at KI10. Two control groups, N.P. group and saline group, were treated with 26gauge needle at KI10, 3 times a week. In Saline group normal saline was injected at KI10. To evaluate the effects of Benincasae Semen Herbal-acupuncture at KI10 on nephritis in rats, WBC, Neutrophils in blood, BUN, Creatinine TNF-α, CINC-1 in serum, urinal volume and creatinine and Total protein in urine, reanl TNF-α, renal MPO were measured and reanl tissue was also analyzed. Results : BS-HA injected at KI10 significantly inhibited WBC and neutrophil in blood, creatinine in serum, and MPO in kidney of LPS-stimulated rats. BS-HA injected at KI10 reduced concentration of neutrophil in renal tissue of LPS-stimulated rats. Conclusion : BS-HA at KI10 has a therapeutic effect for nephritis in LPS-stimulated rat. Therefore, it is suggested that BS-HA at KI10 may be an useful therapeutics in clinical field after further researches.

Objective : This study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the oriental medicine treatment on lumbar disc herniation. Subjects and Methods : The clinical analysis was done on 32 cases of patients with lumbar disc herniation diagnosed by lumbar CT scan. Patients who admitted in Cheongju Oriental Medicine Hospital from April 2007 to April 2008 were analyzed according to the distribution of sex, age, the period of disease, condition on admission, the symptom on admission, Admission day, the treatment efficacy at discharge day. Results : 1. The forties was the most, the acutest phase the most, the day of 8-14 days the most. 2. Multiple bulging disc in 37.5% of CT scan was the most common, followed by a single HNP was 28.1%. 3. Almost 81% patients showed effective efficacy under VAS 3 at discharge day. 4. Single bulging and herniated disc were more short admission days than multiple bulging and herniated disc.

Background/Aims This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of serum pepsinogen (PG) testing for gastric atrophy (AG), intestinal metaplasia (IM), gastric adenoma and cancer by GastroPanel kit. In addition, these results were compared with Latex-enhanced Turbidimetric Immunoassay (L-TIA) kit for correlation between two kits. Methods Serum levels of PG I (sPGI) and sPGII, and PG I/II ratios were measured using both kits in 2,204 patients including 753 controls, 356 peptic ulcer diseases, 316 gastric adenomas and 779 gastric cancers. Results sPGI, sPGII, and PG I/II ratios measured using these two kits showed high concordance. sPGI 70 of the L-TIA kit corresponded to 100 of the Gastropanel kit and PG I/II ratio 3 corresponded to 5.3, respectively, in the analysis using receiver operating characteristic curves. GastroPanel results showed that sPGI was highest in normal control, and decreased in the gastric adenoma and cancer groups; sPGII decreased in the adenoma group while it increased in the cancer group in comparison to control; PG I/II ratios were significantly lower in the adenoma and the cancer groups, especially the intestinal type cancer group (Figure). The senilities and the specificities calculated using the GastroPanel kit were slightly higher in the diagnosis of AG, IM, and adenoma than those of L-TIA kit without statistical difference (Table). Conclusion PG I/II ratio (≤ 5.3) could be a reliable biomarker for the detection of gastric adenoma and gastric cancer. The objective of this study was to improve the reliability of the endurance test for the powertrain system of military tracked vehicles.
