This commentary emerges from our collective interest in, and reflections on, the multiple ways in which parents working within Development Geography in UK academia negotiate the complexities of combining periods of overseas fieldwork with family life. Here, we bring our varied experiences of navigating these challenges (emotional, bureaucratic, and practical) into conversation with Bracken and Mawdsley's ‘Muddy glee,’ highlighting the ways in which a recognition of academics', especially female academics', childcare responsibilities has been largely absent from discussions around conducting fieldwork, specifically development fieldwork in the global South. In South Africa research is currently under way to determine the suitability of using locally available recycled crushed glass as a partial fine aggregate substitute in the production of asphalt mixes. This paper characterises the laboratory performance of a dense-graded asphalt wearing course mix consisting of 15% recycled crushed glass. The influence of selected antistripping additives on moisture susceptibility was specifically assessed as a variable in the performance evaluation of the glass-asphalt mix as follows: (a) the effect of 1% hydrated lime, (b) the effect of 0.5% liquid antistripping additive, and (c) the effect without the addition of antistripping additive. The effect of these variables on the moisture susceptibility of the glass-asphalt mix was evaluated using the tensile strength ratio parameter supported with a microscopic imaging analysis. Additionally, the stiffness and permanent deformation properties of the glass-asphalt mix that demonstrated optimum resistance to moisture damage was compared to the same mix without crushed glass. The performance properties were evaluated using the Huet-Sayegh model and a polynomial model respectively, which were used particularly to develop performance characterisation models for the glass-asphalt mix. The findings of this study revealed that an anti-stripping additive is essential to meet moisture susceptibility criteria and alleviate moisture damage in dense-graded glass-asphalt mixes. In particular, moisture susceptibility was improved using hydrated lime rather than the liquid antistripping additive. Furthermore, the selected constitutive models were able to effectively characterise the laboratory performance of both mixes, with the glass-asphalt mix demonstrating improved resistance to permanent deformation when compared with the conventional asphalt mix.

The objectives of this chapter are to understand the ethical principles that are relevant to the achievement of energy justice; to explore energy marginalization in Africa and to analyse this marginalization from the perspectives of Western and Ubuntu ethics; to underscore the violation of ethics in renewable energy deployment; and to find means of addressing energy injustice through proper application of the respective ethical principles. Part of the data for the study were sourced from the reports of the Renewable Energy for Twenty-First Century (REN21).

South Africa has been experiencing higher traffic volumes and heavier loads over the past several years. This has been accompanied by an increase in premature asphalt failures. Selection of the appropriate asphalt binder is critical for improving performance. Empirical bitumen testing has increasingly failed to relate test results to pavement performance, as the traffic volume and loading have changed. Moreover, empirical tests cannot effectively characterise polymer-modified bitumens that are increasingly being used in South Africa. This changing environment calls for the establishment of specifications based on fundamental engineering properties which relate to actual pavement performance. This paper discusses the fundamental principles of the performance grade (PG) specification being introduced in South Africa. It explains how these fundamental principles create a rational framework for the specification, and present a clear set of compliance criteria to ensure the optimal selection of bituminous binders. The reasons for transitioning to a PG specification are discussed, along with the basis of the specification, rheological concepts, measurements required to characterise bituminous binders, and the simulation of ageing in relation to durability. The framework of the specification, including test procedures, provisional compliance limits and mandatory reporting of test results as an interim measure, are discussed in this paper. Finally, some test results received to date for selected typical South African binders are reported and evaluated. These results indicate that current binders being used in South Africa can easily conform to the proposed PG specification in terms of deformation requirements without any disruption to the processes of the refineries or secondary manufacturers. The fatigue properties of binders are still under evaluation and thus not included in the specification framework. Only information gathered will inform the final decision.

Research on sustainability transitions has expanded rapidly in the last ten years, diversi-fied in terms of topics and geographical applications, and deepened with respect to theories and methods. This article provides an extensive review and an updated research agenda for the field, classified into nine main themes: understanding transitions; power, agency and politics; governing transitions; civil society, culture and social movements; businesses and industries; transitions in practice and everyday life; geography of transitions; ethical aspects; and methodologies. The review shows that the scope of sustainability transitions research has broadened and connections to established disciplines have grown stronger. At the same time, we see that the grand challenges related to sustainability remain unsolved, calling for continued efforts and an acceleration of ongoing transitions.
