Biocomposite materials made of natural plant fibers are becoming a viable alternative to the use of synthetic ones such as glass fibers, thanks to many economic, ecological, and technical benefits. However, their massive use in the industry requires optimal control of their mechanical performances, which constitutes a real scientific issue to be overcome. Indeed, biocomposites suffer from an important variability in their mechanical properties because of their multiscale structure, natural growth conditions, and various processing parameters, in addition to eventual chemical treatments. Biocomposites are also highly sensitive to the surrounding environment in terms of humidity and temperature because of the hydrophilic properties of natural plant fibers. In this context, this Perspective aims to provide a critical look at the influence of the main factors that affect the mechanical properties of biocomposites in order to suggest some possible research outlooks that could contribute to optimizing the control of these mechanical properties and expanding the use of biocomposites in industry. The dissolution behavior of calcium aluminosilicate based glass fibers, such as stone wool fibers, is an important consideration in mineral wool applications for both the longevity of the mineral wool products in humid environments and limiting the health impacts of released and inhaled fibers from the mineral wool product. Balancing these factors requires a molecular-level understanding of calcium aluminosilicate glass dissolution mechanisms, details that are challenging to resolve with experiment alone. Molecular dynamics simulations are a powerful tool capable of providing complementary atomistic insights regarding dissolution; however, they require force fields capable of describing not-only the calcium aluminosilicate surface structure but also the interactions relevant to dissolution phenomena. Here, a new force field capable of describing amorphous calcium aluminosilicate surfaces interfaced with liquid water is developed by fitting parameters to experimental and first principles simulation data of the relevant oxide-water interfaces, including ab initio molecular dynamics simulations performed for this work for the wüstite and periclase interfaces. Simulations of a calcium aluminosilicate surface interfaced with liquid water were used to test this new force field, suggesting moderate ingress of water into the porous glass interface. This design of the force field opens a new avenue for the further study of calcium and network-modifier dissolution phenomena in calcium aluminosilicate glasses and stone wool fibers at liquid water interfaces. Mixed valence manganites are potential functional materials due to their unique electromagnetic properties. In this work, half-doped ceramics with the perovskite structure Sm 0.5 Ca 0.5 MnO 3 polycrystalline samples are synthesized by the solid-state reaction method in open air at different final sintering temperatures. Structures and particle sizes are studied by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Positron annihilation spectroscopy and density-functional theory calculations are used to characterize the intrinsic vacancies in the bulk. Thereafter, the effect of vacancies on the magnetic and magnetoresistance (MR) properties is investigated. We find that Mn monovacancies (V Mn ) exist in the bulk among all the samples, and the concentration of V Mn is different. We suggest a possible defect model that can be well applied to explain the phenomena of their electromagnetic properties. The transition temperature of the charge-order state (T CO ) and ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic (T N ) are most likely related to the concentration of V Mn and the particle sizes or pore sizes, respectively. The glass spin state transition temperature seems to be independent of the defect concentration and type. The metal conductive behavior does not appear in a high magnetic field and at low temperatures, which may be caused by the presence of a high concentration of V Mn in the bulk and oxygen-related defects in the boundary, and the double exchange interaction is suppressed. At temperatures below T N and under a weak magnetic field, the MR is related to the total defect concentration. The 3D printing of continuous-fiber composites is currently relevant to engineers and researchers. This study aims to characterize and predict the mechanical properties of Onyx/glass fiber specimens printed using 3D printing. The work assesses the impact of glass fiber printing parameters on the mechanical behavior of printed parts and proposes analytical and numerical methods to predict mechanical properties. A physicochemical analysis was conducted on 3D printed continuous glass fibers. The study also investigated the impact of fiber printing parameters on composite parts. The results indicate that the 3D-printed glass fibers consist of nylon, continuous glass fibers, and voids (porosity), which range from 58% to 63%, 31% to 38%, and 5% to 8%, respectively. Mechanical characterizations indicate that printing fiber layers in blocks results in superior mechanical properties compared to printing alternating layers of glass fibers and Onyx. Additionally, the concentric mode of fiber printing can be challenging if the 'start rotation' parameter is not adjusted correctly. Premature specimen breakage occurred when fiber printing began within their useful length, resulting in a deformation at break that was approximately 34% less, depending on the starting position. The proposed analytical and numerical prediction methods had prediction errors of approximately 7% to 12% and 5% to 7%, respectively. With the increased use of fibre reinforced composites (FRP), the design of new generation of composite structures with high stiffness and a ductile material behaviour is required to cope with complex load scenarios and high damage tolerances. This can be achieved, in particular, by a combination of conventional fibre-reinforced composites (FRP), which possess high stiffness and strength with metallic materials characterized by their high ductility and associated higher energy absorption capacity. Currently, there are no solutions for hybridisation of high performance filament yarns, metal filament yarns and thermoplastic filament yarns on micro level. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to develop a fibre hybrid composite based on hybrid yarn consisting of glass, steel and polypropylene filament yarns and to compare its tensile and impact properties with those of the composite reinforced only with glass filament yarn. The tensile and impact properties of the unidirectional hybrid composites produced from the developed multi-material hybrid yarn consisting of steel, glass and polypropylene filament yarns are compared with those of a non-hybrid composite reinforced exclusively with glass filament yarn. The results show that by hybridising with steel fibres a characteristic post-failure behaviour can be achieved, so that the developed multi-material hybrid yarns have a high potential for use in composites with high crash and impact performance requirements, where safety demands are essential. The construction of lunar stations for research and habitation requires high-performance building materials that can adapt to the harsh lunar environment. One of the feasible building materials is fiber-reinforced composites, for which the composition of glass fibers can be designed like lunar soils, i.e., terrestrial basalt, and in turn the "lunar glass" can be drawn into fibers. Because of a wide variation of TiO 2 in lunar soils, our study focused on a series investigation on the effect of TiO 2 (0.55 wt%-6.14 wt%) on fiber spinnability and strength of the simulated "lunar glass and glass fibers". The baseline glass composition was derived from a simulated TiO 2 -lean lunar soil and other glasses were made at different TiO 2 doping levels. The addition of TiO 2 was found to reduce the thermal stability of the melt, there appears a TiO 2 threshold (6.14 wt%), at which fibers cannot be drawn without breakage because of melt devitrification. The fiber tensile strength exhibits a nonlinear characteristic with an apparent maximum at 1.52 wt% TiO 2. FTIR and Raman spectroscopic studies were carried out to investigate the glass network structure responses to TiO 2 modifications and show TiO 2 functions as a network modifier, depolymerizing the silicate network. Statistical structure (FTIR & Raman based)–property modeling was attempted to further elucidate the effect of TiO 2 -induced structure change on T g and fiber tensile strength. The present research presents an examination of the consequential effects brought about by the introduction of short-cut E-glass fibers (GF) on the properties of high-dielectric constant, high-thermal conductivity microwave composite systems (x GF/(8- x)BNNS/78 wt%ST/polyolefin, x = 0-8 wt%, BNNS: hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets). The GF is modified using KH550, with the success of the surface modification definitively confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). All components are found to exhibit consistently ultra-high and stable dielectric constants within the 8–12 GHz frequency range (D k = 17.7–18.08). Based on thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results, the incorporation of modified GF improve the thermal stability of the composite materials, enhancing thermal decomposition temperature, residual carbon content and glass transition temperature. Furthermore, replacing BNNS with GF significantly amplifies the mechanical properties of the composite substrate. This substitution leads to a notable reduction in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in all directions while simultaneously increasing the bending and tensile strength. At the same time, the composites can maintain reasonably high thermal conductivity values. Overall, with a GF concentration of 4 wt%, the composite showcases an appreciable increase in dielectric constants (17.81), a high thermal conductivity (1.3 W/m·K) and enhances mechanical properties (cross-plane CTE: 15.44 μm/(m·°C), in-plane CTE: 26.06 μm/(m·°C), bending strength: 65.6 MPa, tensile strength: 17.42 MPa). In the present research, glass and basalt fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites' behaviour in quasi-static and dynamic conditions is studied. Composites were fabricated by vacuum assisted Compression molding method. Composites failure under quasi-static tension and compressive conditions was studied along with its failure behaviour under low-velocity impact and super-sonic shock loading under dynamic conditions. The study results showed that basalt fiber-reinforced polypropylene (Basalt/PP) composite's tensile and compressive strength is higher than glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene (Glass/PP). The Basalt/PP showed no penetration against low velocity impact (LVI) with negligible deformations till 50 J. However, the Glass/PP perforated at 50 J with various failure patterns occurring at back side. The fiber-matrix interface adhesion plays an important role in super-sonic shock loading by absorbing shock wave energy due to ductile nature of polypropylene and the two composites absorbed energy via matrix and fibers failure, no brittle failure of laminates occurred under shock loading. Using fiberglass bolts to reinforce a tunnel face is a practical auxiliary technology for ensuring tunnel face stability in soft ground. The reinforcing effect and the economics of this technology are significantly affected by bolt length. However, to date, the failure mechanism of bolt-reinforced tunnel faces with different bolt lengths has rarely been investigated. To reveal the failure mechanism of bolt-reinforced shallow tunnel faces, in this study, the stability of bolt-reinforced tunnel faces with different bolt lengths was investigated by using laboratory tests and numerical simulations, and a simplified theoretical model for practical engineering was proposed. The face support pressure and failure pattern for different bolt lengths during the face collapse process were obtained, and the influence of bolt length on face stability was clearly revealed. More specifically, the results show that face stability increases with increasing bolt length, and the reinforcing effect of face bolts is governed by the shear failure at the soil-grout interface first in the stable zone of the tunnel face and then in the failure zone. Once the bolt length in the stable zone is larger than that in the failure zone, face stability will not be improved with increasing bolt length; thus, this bolt length is referred to as the optimal bolt length Lopt. The Lopt value is slightly larger than the initial failure range (in the unreinforced condition) and can be approximately calculated by Lopt = (1 x 0.0133u)D (u is the friction angle of the soil, and D is the tunnel diameter) in practical engineering. Finally, a simplified theoretical model was established to analyse the stability of reinforced tunnel faces, and the results are in good agreement with both laboratory tests and numerical simulations. The high strength, corrosion resistant, and nonmagnetic characteristics of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars make these bars suitable for use as reinforcement in concrete structures exposed to aggressive environments. This article presents an experimental study on the flexural behaviour of hybrid (SGFRP) concrete beams reinforced with steel and GFRP bars. Six concrete beams measuring 150 × 200 × 2200 mm were fabricated, two of which were normal reinforced concrete (RC) beams and four of which were reinforced with either a hybrid combination of steel and GFRP bars or GFRP bars only. An accelerated corrosion test using the electro-chemical corrosion method was conducted on the RC and hybrid beams until cracks appeared on the beam surface due to steel bar corrosion. Subsequently, a four-point bending test was conducted on the corroded beams until point of failure to assess the flexural behaviour of the corroded SGFRP concrete beams. The experimental results demonstrate that corroded and non-corroded SGFRP beams exhibit similar flexural behaviour and highlight the role of GFRP bars in distributing flexural cracks and in increasing beam load-bearing capacity. In addition, a simple model was proposed based on the obtained experimental results to predict the load-carrying capacities and load–deflection curves of corroded SGFRP concrete beams. Highlights Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites with chopped strand mat (CSM) and woven roving mat (WRM) reinforcements are widely used in high‐pressure piping due to their favorable strength‐to‐weight ratio. However, cyclic loading from vibrations and pulsating forces can induce internal microstructural damage, ultimately leading to performance degradation. A thorough understanding of this damage mechanism is imperative for its mitigation, necessitating a detailed examination. The present study aims to investigate the fatigue response and damage mechanisms in CSM and WRM composites subjected to tension‐tension cyclic loading. Scanning electron microscopy analysis of edge sections revealed the development of perpendicular microcracks in both composites. CSM composites exhibited fatigue cracks parallel to the loading direction and higher levels of parallel interface debonding compared to perpendicular matrix cracks. Finite element analysis of the representative volume element revealed the role of shear stress in the matrix in initiating parallel cracks, thereby explaining the damage initiation mechanism in CSM. These findings highlight the distinct damage mechanisms arising from the differing fiber arrangements in CSM and WRM composites, providing valuable insights for optimizing their performance under cyclic loading conditions. Fatigue response of CSM and WRM was influenced by fiber orientation and weaving pattern. Perpendicular fibers were the most probable fibers to have their interface form a crack. Various modifications of standard glass fiber filtration media using electrospun PA66 nanofibers are described. PA66 were selected because they were readily available from commercial sources. Other polymers, such as PP, PET and PBT, could also be used. The first set of samples was prepared by mixing the nanofibers at two, three and five weight percent with glass fibers, and the second by laying the same proportion of the nanofibers directly onto the downstream side of the substrate. The aim of these modifications was to improve the three most basic functionalities of filter media, the separation efficiency, the differential pressure (ΔP) and the dirt holding capacity (DHC). The modified media samples were evaluated with the standard textile characterization techniques and filtration performance evaluation procedures. The results showed differences in the several tens of percentage points achieved with the two modification methods. Moreover, additional differences in performance were observed depending on the percentage of nanofibers admixed to the substrate. These differences were most apparent in the filtration efficiency and the DHC, both by several percentage points, with no apparent effect on the ∆P. The results strongly suggest that the preparation of new filter media by incorporating nanofibers directly into the matrix can result in significant improvements in filtration performance characteristics. Zinc‐based aqueous batteries (ZABs) are attracting extensive attention due to the low cost, high capacity, and environmental benignity of the zinc anode. However, their application is still hindered by the undesired zinc dendrites. Despite Zn‐surface modification being promising in relieving dendrites, a thick separator (i.e. glass fiber, 250–700 μm) is still required to resist the dendrite puncture, which limits volumetric energy density of battery. Here, we pivot from the traditional interphase plus extra separator categories, proposing an all‐in‐one ligand buffer layer (ca. 20 μm) to effectively modulate the Zn2+ transfer and deposition behaviors proved by in situ electrochemical digital holography. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory simulations further reveal that the catechol groups in the buffer layer can accelerate the Zn2+ reduction reaction (ZRR) through the electron‐donating p‐π conjugation effect, decreasing the negative charge in the coordination environment. Without extra separators, the elaborated system endows low polarization below 28.2 mV, long lifespan of 4950 h at 5 mA cm−2 in symmetric batteries, and an unprecedented volumetric energy density of 99.2 Wh L−1 based on the whole pouch cells. The concomitantly "separator‐free" and "dendrite‐free" conjugation effect with an accelerated ZRR process could foster the progression of metallic anodes and benefit energetic aqueous batteries. This study explores the application of abrasive waterjet drilling (AWJD) for varied patterns of GF/Al mesh hybrid composites (neat glass NG, AG: Al in the exterior surface, and GA: Al in the center). Key parameters such as jet pressure (P), standoff distance (S), and traverse speed (V) are systematically varied, influencing material removal rate (MRR), hole taper ratio (Tr), and roundness error (Re). Employing a Taguchi approach with an L9 design. It was indicated that the optimal conditions for maximum MRR are (P: 150 MPa, S: 2 mm, and V: 900 mm/min). V and S are the main influential parameters on Tr and Re. Gray relational analysis (GRA) is employed for simultaneous optimization, enhancing drilling performance. The optimal parameters P of 150 MPa, S of 2 mm, and V of 300 mm/min are determined. Validation trials confirm the effectiveness of the determined parameters. A robust multiple regression equation is formulated, providing a predictive model that aligns closely with experimental observations. Elium® Acrylic/Glass Fiber thermoplastic laminate composites are liable to develop irreversible local defects under quasi‐static loading. To reinforce the damaged material, repair is a cost‐effective mechanical alternative. The present study investigates the tensile behavior of an Elium® glass‐fiber‐based acrylic laminate composite panel, repaired by vacuum bonding with Elium® repair resin and double overlap of external patches (DP). The results obtained for all repaired laminate composites E190/GF_D(10, 20, 30)R with diameters 10, 20, and 30 mm showed an improvement in the mechanical properties of the repaired panels, compared with the drilled and pristine samples. Average load recovery rates were significant for E190/GF_D10R (7.9%, 3.55%, 13%) E190/GF_D20R (23%, 18%, 3.32%), E190/GF_D30R (7.2%, 9.36%, 32.37%) at strain rates of 0.001, 0.01, and 0.05 s−1 respectively. Finite element (FE) models for the virgin, drilled, and repaired composite, performed by coupling the Hashin criteria with the cohesive zone model (CZM), provided a relevant prediction of intra‐ and interlaminar failures of these woven laminated composites. In the pursuit of sustainable and high‐performance materials, this study presents a groundbreaking approach to enhance the mechanical properties of glass fiber‐reinforced polymer composites. Railway waste provides an unexpected source of recycled glass fibers (RGFs), which, when combined with bamboo fibers (BFs) and nano SiO2 in a resilient epoxy matrix, unleashes a transformative synergy. The epoxy‐SiO2 matrix ratio was kept constant, that is,70% by weight while varying the ratio of RGF and BFs weight. The experimental results demonstrated notable improvements in mechanical properties. Specifically, a 36.92% increase in tensile strength was observed with an RGF and BF ratio of 20:10. Flexural strength exhibited a substantial enhancement of 44.67%, and impact strength increased by 31.28% at a ratio of 15:15. The composite achieved a remarkable 42.64% improvement in hardness, while attaining the lowest density value of 0.862 at a ratio of 25:05.Water absorption tests, conducted in both distilled and saline water, provided insights into the material's resistance to environmental conditions. The morphological and dispersion behaviors of the prepared composites were analyzed using advanced characterization techniques, including field‐emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) to study the orientation, shape, and size of fibers and particles, bonding between the fibers and matrix, defects, voids, etc. Combined with energy dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy (EDX), FESEM allows for elemental analysis, helping to identify and quantify the chemical composition of different phases within the polymer composite. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to know the compositions of developed composites. The findings from this study underscore the efficacy of incorporating recycled materials. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of direct restorations using unidirectional glass fiber orientations and a short-fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated premolars with mesio-occluso-distal cavities. Ninety double-rooted premolars were selected. Fifteen teeth were left intact/as a control group. The endodontic treatment and cavity preparations of seventy-five teeth were performed and divided into five experimental groups: Resin composite (RC), modified transfixed technique + RC, circumferential technique + RC, cavity floor technique + RC, and SFRC + RC. All teeth were fractured under oblique static loading at a 30° angle using a universal testing machine. The fracture patterns were observed and classified. Data were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance, Pearson chi-square, and Tukey HSD post hoc tests (p = 0.05). The highest fracture strength values were obtained in intact teeth (599.336 N), followed by modified transfixed + RC treated teeth (496.58 N), SFRC + RC treated teeth (469.62 N), RC (443.51 N), circumferential + RC treated teeth (442.835 N), and cavity floor + RC treated teeth (404.623 N) (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the RC and the circumferential technique + RC (p > 0.05). Unrepairable fractures were observed at low rates (20%) in the modified transfixed + RC and SFRC + RC teeth, and at higher rates in RC (73.3%), cavity floor + RC (60%), and circumferential + RC (80%) teeth. The application of an SFRC or the modified transfixed technique yielded an improved fracture strength and the fracture pattern of ETPs being restored with a universal injectable composite. A cost-effective solution to the problems that the automotive industry is facing nowadays regarding regulations on emissions and fuel efficiency is to achieve weight reduction of automobile parts. Glass fiber-reinforced polymers are regularly used to manufacture various components, and some parts may also contain thermoplastic elastomers for toughness improvement. This work aimed to investigate the effect of styrene-(ethylene-co-butylene)-styrene triblock copolymer (E) and treated fly ash (C) on the morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties of long glass fiber (G)-reinforced polypropylene (PP). Results showed that the composites obtained through melt processing methods presented similar thermal stability and improved (nano)mechanical properties compared to 25–30 wt.% G-reinforced PP composites (PP-25G/PP-30G). Specifically, the impact strength and surface hardness were greatly improved. The addition of 20 wt.% E led to a 25–39% increase in impact strength and surface elasticity, while the addition of 6.5 wt.% C led to a 16% increase in surface hardness. The composite based on 25 wt.% G, 6.5 wt.% C, and 20 wt.% E presented the best-balanced properties (8–17% increase in impact strength, 38–41% increase in axial strain, and 35% increase in surface hardness) compared with PP-30G/PP-25G. Structural and morphological analysis confirmed the presence of a strong interaction between the components that make the composites. This study experimentally investigates the influence of metal chips and glass fibers on the mode I fracture toughness, energy absorption, and tensile strength of polymer concretes (PCs) manufactured by waste aggregates. A substantial portion of the materials employed in manufacturing and enhancing the tested polymer concrete are sourced from waste material. To achieve this, semi-circular bend (SCB) samples were fabricated, both with and without a central crack, to analyze the strength and fracture behavior of the composite specimens. The specimens incorporated varying weight percentages comprising 50 wt% coarse mineral aggregate, 25 wt% fine mineral aggregate, and 25 wt% epoxy resin. Metal chips and glass fibers were introduced at 2, 4, and 8 wt% of the PC material to enhance its mechanical response. Subsequently, the specimens underwent 3-point bending tests to obtain tensile strength, mode I fracture toughness, and energy absorption up to failure. The findings revealed that adding 4% brass chips along with 4% glass fibers significantly enhanced energy absorption (by a factor of 3.8). However, using 4% glass fibers alone improved it even more (by a factor of 10.5). According to the results, glass fibers have a greater impact than brass chips. Introducing 8% glass fibers enhanced the fracture energy by 92%. It is vital to maximize the safety of outdoor constructions, airplanes, and space vehicles by protecting against the impact of airborne debris from increasing winds due to climate change, or from bird strikes or micrometeoroids. In a widely-used compression-molded short glass fiber polyester bulk-molded compound (SGFRP-BMC) with 55% wt. CaCO3 filler, the center of the mother panel has lower impact strength than the outer sections with solidification texture angles and short glass fiber (SGF) orientations being random from 0 to 90 degrees. Therefore, a new double-step process of: (1) reducing commercial fiber length without change in molding equipment; followed by a (2) 0.86 MGy dose of homogeneous low-voltage electron beam irradiation (HLEBI) to both sides of the finished samples requiring no chemicals or additives, which is shown to increase the Charpy impact value (auc) about 50% from 6.26 to 9.59 kJm−2 at median-accumulative probability of fracture, Pf = 0.500. Shortening the SGFs results in higher fiber spacing density, Sf, as the thermal compressive stress site proliferation by action of the CTE difference between the matrix and SGF while the composite cools and shrinks. To boost impact strength further, HLEBI provides additional nano-compressive stresses by generating dangling bonds (DBs) creating repulsive forces while increasing SGF/matrix adhesion. Considering the different structural strength requirements of different parts of fiberglass yachts, carbon fiber/glass fiber hybrid reinforcement can be applied to the skins of sandwich panels in special areas. This paper designs and prepares 12 foam sandwich panel samples composed of pure carbon fiber, a carbon fiber/glass fiber hybrid, pure glass fiber skin, and PVC and SAN foam sandwich, with reference to the layup structure of the outer panel of a fiberglass yacht. Through a comparative analysis of low-speed impact experiments, edge compression experiments, and short beam three-point bending experiments, we seek the optimal carbon fiber/glass fiber hybrid layup design scheme for local structures to guide production. The results show that a reasonable hybrid carbon fiber layup in fiberglass skin can effectively reduce the low-speed impact damage of the sandwich structure, reduce edge compression damage, and improve the bending and compression resistance of sandwich structure. The impact resistance, compression resistance, and shear resistance of the SAN sandwich structure are stronger than the PVC sandwich structure. The carbon fiber/glass fiber hybrid SAN foam sandwich structure can be used for the local structural reinforcement of special parts such as the bow, side, and main deck of fiberglass yachts. The damage mechanism of 2D woven fiberglass panels under random vibration loadings was investigated by means of an experimental analysis and compared with the damage mechanism under constant-amplitude loadings. Based on experimental observations, it was found that the failure mode under vibration loadings was delamination, and predicting the vibration fatigue life using the traditional S – N curve would result in significant errors. Therefore, a prediction method was proposed to accurately estimate the vibration fatigue life of a 2D woven fiberglass panel by modifying the conventional S – N curve. The effects of thermal aging on the failure behavior of single-lap bonded joint composites were investigated experimentally. The single-lap bonded joints specimens were made of [0]8 layered woven glass fiber/epoxy composite plates joined together by adhesive. Two different thermal aging processes were applied to adhesive- bonded single-lap joints specimens. In the first process, temperatures of 75, 100, and 150°C were applied during the aging time of 4 h. In the second process, a constant temperature of 150°C was applied for aging times of 2, 4, and 8 h. Additionally, this study was carried out in a temperature-controlled oven, without considering humidity, using three different adhesive thicknesses (0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 mm) and three different overlap lengths (15, 30, and 45 mm). After the thermal aging process, the specimens were subjected to a tensile test to determine the failure loads. Furthermore, the hardness values of both the adhesive and the composite plate were investigated under the conditions of 4 h at 150°C. The failure loads and microstructural changes determined were compared with the results for control specimens kept at room temperature (25°C). It was found that the increase in hardness values positively affected the strength of both the adhesive and the composite. With increasing the thermal aging time, temperature, and overlap length, the failure loads increased by 8.4 to 79.1%, 14.4 to 79.1%, and 9.5 to 50.9%, respectively. This paper presents a study on the mechanical characterization of novel short curauá/glass fibre reinforced interlaminar hybrid composite adhesive joints. The study aims to optimize the performance of these joints by analysing their mechanical properties as a function of the number of external synthetic layers and the architectural symmetry. Short curauá fibres and glass fibre bidirectional fabrics were used with a bi-component epoxy matrix in order to fabricate the hybrid composite adherends. The glass fibre bidirectional fabrics were placed on the outer layers, while the short curauá fibres were used as the core of the hybrid composites. The mechanical properties of the composites used as adherends, including tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance, were determined through mechanical testing. Single lap joints bonded with a structural ductile bi-component epoxy automotive adhesive were fabricated and tested for each case. The results show that the failure mode of the bonded joints is strongly influenced by the composition and configuration of the adherends' composite layers. It was found that the effect of the number of synthetic layers is highly significant for bonded joint failure load, while no significant variation was observed as a function of architecture symmetry. This study provides valuable insights into the mechanical properties of adhesively bonded joints in hybrid curauá/glass fibre reinforced composites, which can be useful in the design and optimization of these materials for various engineering applications. Glass fiber-reinforced cement-based material incorporating hollow glass beads (GFRC-HGB) is an innovative lightweight building material with exceptional energy-saving properties. Based on the framework of variational asymptotic homogenization theory, a micromechanical model is developed for predicting the effective elastic properties and recovering the local fields of unidirectional GFRC-HGB. This model starts with expressing the displacements of the heterogeneous GFRC-HGB in terms of those of the corresponding homogeneous material and fluctuation function. Then, the principle of minimum potential energy is used along with variation asymptotic method to formulate the governing variational statement for the micromechanics model, the micromechanical model is used to quantitatively investigate the influence of internal structural parameters of HGB on the elastic properties of unidirectional GFRC-HGB. The numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the micromechanical model in predicting the effective elastic modulus and local fields. The numerical simulation and SEM images of the tensile fracture prove that the local stress distributions are closely related to the loading direction, and the transverse deformation is restrained by glass fibers. With the current development of the 5G infrastructure, there presents a unique opportunity for the deployment of battery-less mmWave reflect-array-based sensors. These fully-passive devices benefit from having a larger detectability than alternative battery-less solutions to create self-monitoring megastructures. The presented 'smart' skin sensor uses a Van-Atta array design enabling ubiquitous local strain monitoring for the structural health monitoring of composite materials featuring wide interrogation angles. Proof-of-concept prototypes of these 'smart' skin millimeter-wave identification tags, that can be mounted on or embedded within common materials used in wind turbine blades, present a highly-detectable radar cross-section of − 33.75 dBsm and − 35.00 dBsm for mounted and embedded sensors respectively. Both sensors display a minimum resolution of 202 μ -strain even at 40 ∘ off-axis enabling interrogation of the fully-passive sensor at oblique angles of incidence. When interrogated from a proof-of-concept reader, the fully-passive, sticker-like mmID enables local strain monitoring of both carbon fiber and glass fiber composite materials. The sensors display a repeatable and recoverable response over 0–3000 μ -strain and a sensitivity of 7.55 kHz/ μ -strain and 7.92 kHz/ μ -strain for mounted and embedded sensors, respectively. Thus, the presented 5G-enabled battery-less sensor presents massive potential for the development of ubiquitous Digital Twinning of composite materials in future smart cities architectures. To simultaneously endow thermal conductivity, high glass transition temperature (Tg) and healing capability to glass fiber/epoxy (GFREP) composite, dynamic crosslinked epoxy resin bearing reversible β-hydroxyl ester bonds was reinforced with boron nitride nanosheets modified glass fiber cloth (GFC@BNNSs). The in-plane heat conduction paths were constructed by electrostatic self-assembly of polyacrylic acid treated GFC and polyethyleneimine decorated BNNSs. Then, the GFC@BNNSs were impregnated with the mixture of lower concentration (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane grafted BN micron sheets, 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl 3,4-epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate and hexahydro-4-methylphthalic anhydride, which accounted for establishing the through-plane heat transport pathways and avoiding serious deterioration of mechanical performances. The resultant GFREP composite containing less boron nitride particles (17.6 wt%) exhibited superior in-plane (3.29 W·m−1·K−1) and through-plane (1.16 W·m−1·K−1) thermal conductivities, as well as high Tg of 204 °C (Tg of the unfilled epoxy=177 °C). The reversible transesterification reaction enabled closure of interlaminar cracks within the composite, achieving decent healing efficiencies estimated by means of tensile strength (71.2%), electrical breakdown strength (83.6%) and thermal conductivity (69.1%). The present work overcame the disadvantages of conventional thermally conductive composites, and provided an efficient approach to prolong the life span of thermally conductive GFREP laminate for high-temperature resistant integrated circuit application. Charlotte (North Carolina), ISSN 0749-0208. The Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum (Bivalvia: Veneridae), is a commercially important species cultivated in tidal flats along the coasts of Korea. However, the local clam industries on the west coast face challenges due to a shortage of seed clams, primarily relying on catching wild juveniles or importing seeds from China. This study aimed to enhance the natural seed harvest of Manila clams by installing fiberglass mesh on the tidal flats of Jugyo, Korea. Fiberglass mesh was installed at three different stations on the tidal flats in October 2017 and clam density was monitored monthly from November 2017 to January 2018. Sediment samples were collected at each station three times using stainless steel quad-rats, and clams were categorized by size (<5 mm, 5–10 mm, 10–20 mm, 20–30 mm, and >30 mm). The results revealed spatial and temporal variations in clam density, with higher concentrations observed closer to the tidal waterline. Clam size distribution also differed across stations, with smaller clams dominating certain areas. The mesh installation in November 2017 did not significantly affect clam density compared with the control group. However, clam density substantially increased in December 2017 and January 2018 because of mesh installation, especially at the lowest station. These findings suggest that installing fiberglass mesh can enhance the survival of newly settled Manila clams, providing a potential solution to the seed shortage the local clam industries face. Glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) wastes may be mechanically processed into small strips called "macro fibres," which were used as short reinforcement fibres to produce macro fibre reinforced concrete (MFRC). The addition of such macro fibres into concrete has proven to be effective in enhancing the flexural strength and toughness of concrete, but it also slightly reduces the compressive strength of concrete. This paper presents a study on the behaviour of CFRP-confined MFRC. A total of 84 CFRP-confined MFRC cylinders were prepared and tested in axial compression. The test parameters included the CFRP confinement stiffness, macro fibre content, and fibre length. The test results show that the compressive strength and ultimate axial strain can be significantly enhanced through the use of CFRP confinement. The ultimate axial strain of CFRP-confined concrete with macro fibres is slightly higher than that without macro fibres. The test results were compared with two well-known stress-strain models for FRP-confined concrete, including Teng et al.'s design-oriented model and Jiang and Teng's analysis-oriented model. A comparative analysis showed that both models slightly underestimate the compressive strength and slightly overestimate the ultimate axial strain for CFRP-confined MFRC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the mechanical performances of glass fiber-reinforced notched and pin-connected composite plates were investigated experimentally and numerically. For this purpose, composite plates with a circular hole, semicircular double-edge notched, U-edge notched, and single and double pin joints were prepared from [ 0 ° ] 8 layer glass fiber composites. Tensile tests were carried out on the obtained specimens. The effect of notch type, number of pins, and position of pins on plate damage load and type was investigated for linear and non-linear material behavior. Progressive failure analysis was performed using the Hashin damage criteria. Subprogram codes were written in the Ansys program using the finite element method. According to the obtained data, it was determined that the type of notch and the number of pins have a significant effect on the damage loads of the plates and the behavior of the material is important in terms of convergence to the experimental results in numerical solutions. In single-pin composites, the type of damage changed from net-tension to shear out as the pin approached the free edge of the plate. It was observed that the distance between the pins did not have any effect on the damage type of the composites in the double-pin joint structure. Compared to single-pin joint composites, double-pin joint composites were found to carry a maximum of 34% more damage load. The convergence rate of experimental and numerical data was obtained as a minimum of 92.1% for nonlinear material behavior and a minimum of 73.4% for linear material behavior [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present work, a combination of virgin polypropylene and E-glass fiber was subjected to ten (10) reprocessing cycles via extrusion and compression molding techniques to mimic recycling and its impacts on the bending properties of the composites. The samples were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and melt flow index (MFI). The results revealed a gradual depreciation in flexural properties after each reprocessing cycle. The XRD analysis indicated a substantial reduction of peak intensities, degrees of crystallinities, and average crystallite sizes, explaining the lowered flexural properties in addition to a possible reduction in glass fiber lengths (fiber attrition). Melt-processing behavior shows a progressive increase of MFI from 7 to 19.16 g/10 min, confirming the probable damage in molecular weight and loss of complex viscosity. Chemical and structural analysis showed no alteration in the polypropylene major functional groups. It is concluded that the reductions in molecular weight and composites' properties occurred due to chain scission from recycling effects; hence, glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites can be recycled only three (3) times unless it is refreshed by the addition of virgin parts to compensate for the lost property. In the field of lightweight structures, foldcore sandwich structure is regarded as a promising replacement for conventional honeycomb sandwich structure. In this study, a new M-type glass fiber foldcore structure was fabricated by hot-pressing molding technology, and the effects of various factors on the low-velocity impact characteristics were investigated. In addition, a 3 D progressive damage numerical model matching the experimental results was established. The results showed that the impact energy exerted a certain influence on the response characteristics of the sandwich structure, but did not change the development trend of the load curve. The sandwich panel was able to achieve the overall load-carrying potential for the impactor whose size was longer than the foldcore span (25 mm). In addition, as the sharpness of the impactor increased, the damage range of the sandwich panel became concentrated and the load-bearing capacity gradually decreased. As revealed by the findings, the maximum load and specific energy absorption of laminated sandwich panels were improved by 150 and 40% respectively compared to single sandwich panel at base position. Therefore, it is beneficial to appropriately reduce the core span and increase the number of laminations to improve impact resistance of foldcore sandwich in practical applications.
