Abstract

The microstructure evolution of boron-bearing high speed steel roll materials after casting and tempering was investigated. The results indicate that as-cast boron-bearing high speed steel consists of martensitic matrix, retained austenite and different borocarbides. The as-cast alloy has a hardness above 64 HRC, and the borocarbides distribute along the grain boundaries. After RE-Mg-Ti compound modification treatment, obvious necking and broken network appear in the grain boundaries. The hardness of boron-bearing high speed steel roll materials reduces gradually with the increase of tempering temperature. Under the same conditions, the toughness of the modified roll material is higher than that of the unmodified roll material. Wear tests show that the wear resistance of boron-bearing high-speed steel modified by RE-Mg-Ti compound modification treatment is better.

25. Effect of Si Content on Microstructure and Properties of Low-Carbon Medium-Manganese Steel after Intercritical Heat Treatment.

Abstract

The microstructure and mechanical properties of three kinds of low-carbon medium-manganese steels with different Si contents under an intercritical heat treatment process were studied. The results show that the microstructure of the test forged steel is mainly composed of ferrite and pearlite. After 900 °C complete austenitizing quenching + 720 °C intercritical quenching, the microstructure of the test steel is mainly composed of ferrite and martensite. With the increase in Si content, the microstructure becomes finer and more uniform. The microstructure of the test steel after 900 °C complete austenitizing quenching + 720 °C intercritical quenching + 680 °C intercritical tempering is dominated by ferrite and tempered martensite, with a small amount of retained austenite and cementite. As the Si content increases, the boundaries between ferrite and tempered martensite become more clear. The tensile strength and hardness of the test steel increase with the increase in Si content, while the elongation first increases and then decreases; the comprehensive performance of the test steel is the best when the Si content is 0.685 wt. %, with a tensile strength of 726 MPa, a yield ratio of only 0.65, the highest elongation of 30.5%, and the highest strong plastic product of 22,143 MPa.%. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of boron content on the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties, and three-body abrasive wear property of as-cast Fe–Si–Mn–Cr–B alloys, and to reveal the wear mechanism of Fe–Si–Mn–Cr–B alloys. The results indicated that the microstructure of the Fe–Si–Mn–Cr–B alloy was mainly composed of bainite, retained austenite (RA), M3B2, and M2B (M stands for the metal atom, in this case, it refers to Fe, Cr, and Mn). With the increase of boron content, the volume fraction of the boride phase increased, the morphology of the boride phase was dominated by fishbone, the microhardness of the boride phase and the macrohardness of the alloy increased, and the wear resistance of the alloy was significantly enhanced. Compared with the 0.5 wt.% B alloy, the macrohardness of the 2.0 wt.% B alloy was increased by 19.5%, the maximum microhardness of the boride phase reached 1440 HV0.2, the Charpy impact toughness was reduced by 45%, and the wear resistance was increased by 268%. The morphology, content and distribution of the boride phase play a key role in improving the hardness and wear resistance of the alloy. The synergy between the high-hardness boride phase and the softer metal matrix phase, which was composed of bainite and RA, gave the alloy excellent wear resistance. The main wear mechanisms of the alloy were abrasive wear and fretting wear.
