International audience; Comparing the script of a play to a musical score suggests a physical approach to the text, based on resonance, voice and silence, and away from “psychological” acting techniques. It also carries connotations of precise timing, bringing to the fore the notion of rhythm, as well as that of leeway or margin of interpretation left to the performer. This article seeks to explore such questions in three plays by Sarah Ruhl, focusing on her use of stage directions, on the way dialogue is arranged on the page, as well as on the sheer sonority of words and lines. The metaphor of the script as score highlights the poetry of Ruhl’s drama in performance, and helps to define the way her writing functions.; Comparer le texte d’une pièce à une partition musicale suggère une approche physique et sonore du dialogue, fondée sur l’alternance entre voix et silence, à l’opposé des techniques de jeu « psychologiques ». Ce parallèle connote également la précision, la cadence : il met en avant la notion de rythme, ainsi que celle de liberté, de marge de créativité laissée à l’interprète. Cet article creuse ces problématiques au fil de trois pièces de Sarah Ruhl, en explorant l’écriture des didascalies, la disposition des dialogues sur la page, la résonance du mot et de la réplique. La métaphore de la pièce comme partition met en relief la poésie scénique du théâtre de Sarah Ruhl, et contribue à définir le fonctionnement de son écriture.

L’observation des didascalies et d’autres éléments paratextuels permet d’analyser des traces de l’événement théâtral une fois qu’il s’est produit (teatro perdido), en toute conscience de leur qualité de bribes seulement. Quelques exemples d’inversion des fonctions des discours dialogal et didascalique sur la scène hispano-américaine contemporaine obligent à revoir la relation entre le texte écrit et tout ce qui compose l’événement théâtral : par exemple les scènes d’introduction uniquement composées de didascalies, comme chez Marco Antonio de la Parra (Chili) ou Susana Torres Molina (Argentine). Le terme de paratexte englobe davantage que les indications scéniques et contribue à la compréhension du fait théâtral. Son examen sur un corpus composé d’œuvres du Río de la Plata et du Mexique nous invite à mesurer les multiples possibilités pour saisir les bribes de l’événement théâtral, depuis la volonté de légitimation jusqu’aux conseils et injonctions. The observation of stage directions and other paratext elements allows an analysis of the traces of the theatrical event once it has happened (lost theatre), knowing perfectly that they are just snatches. A few examples of inversions of the dialogue and stage direction functions in the Spanish-American contemporary theatre lead us to review the relationship between written text and all the characteristics of the theatrical event: for example the introductory scenes that are almost entirely composed of stage directions, such as in the case of Marco Antonio de la Parra (Chile) or Susana Torres Molina (Argentina). The term “paratext” includes much more than stage directions and contributes to a better understanding of the theatrical event. By examining it in a corpus of texts from the Río de la Plata and Mexico, we can evaluate the many different possibilities to catch snatches of the theatrical event, from the willingness to legitimate to the advices and injunctions.

International audience; Si les didascalies peuvent être définies comme un « texte à ne pas dire » lors des représentations théâtrales, elles sont néanmoins des textes à lire pour tout lecteur de pièces. L’histoire de la présentation matérielle des didascalies sur l’espace de la page imprimée montre comment s’est imposée, au cours du XVIIème siècle, une mise en page qui distingue didascalies et répliques, faisant de la discontinuité la spécificité du texte de théâtre. Cette discontinuité textuelle peut jouer un double rôle dans la lecture : celui d’aider le lecteur à mémoriser le texte par la création de paliers de rétrospection et celui de créer une dynamique de lecture par la préparation d’appuis visuels qui le propulsent vers la découverte de la suite du texte. Je propose ainsi de parler de stéréolecture ou de lecture stéréoscopique car le lecteur découvre immédiatement et simultanément dans la pièce didascalies et paroles attribuées aux personnages, doit les associer, les confronter et les ajuster, ce qui lui fait éprouver comme une sensation de relief et de profondeur dans sa découverte de l’action.

The aim of this study is to analyse and interpret L.Z. Sikwane's play: Matshediso from the perspective of didascalies. The study comprises five chapters. The aim, scope and methods of research are outlined and motivated in chapter one. In chapter two, an overview of the research into didascalies is undertaken. Questions such as: "what are didascalies?" "how do didascalies in a play help produce meaning and shape?" etc. are dealt with. Later, the study shows how didascalies are linked to the other structural elements of drama such as theme; plot; characters and setting. In chapter three an analysis and interpretation of Matshediso from the perspective of the importance of didascalies is undertaken. This analysis focuses on the plot; didascalies and characters; didascalies and space; and didascalies, props, and set. Limitations characterizing performance are also dealt with. In chapter four, an integrated interpretation of Matshediso is provided. Thereafter a set of guidelines for performing the play is developed. This covers aspects such as: stage setting; the characters; dialogue; sound and costume. Chapter five sum up the main findings of the study and the value of the didascalies approach. By way of conclusion, I argue that Sikwane has not just written a play, but also pictured how it should be performed.
