Abstract

BackgroundHereditary angioedema is a rare genetic condition caused by C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency, dysfunction, or kinin cascade dysregulation, leading to an increased bradykinin plasma concentration. Hereditary angioedema is a poorly recognized clinical entity and is very often misdiagnosed as a histaminergic angioedema. Despite its genetic nature, first-line genetic screening is not integrated in routine diagnosis. Consequently, a delay in the diagnosis, and inaccurate or incomplete diagnosis and treatment of hereditary angioedema are common. ObjectiveIn agreement with recent recommendations from the International Consensus on the Use of Genetics in the Management of Hereditary Angioedema, to facilitate the clinical diagnosis and adapt it to the paradigm of precision medicine and next-generation sequencing–based genetic tests, we aimed to develop a genetic annotation tool, termed Hereditary Angioedema Database Annotation (HADA). MethodsHADA is built on top of a database of known variants affecting function, including precomputed pathogenic assessment of each variant and a ranked classification according to the current guidelines from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. ResultsHADA is provided as a freely accessible, user-friendly web-based interface with versatility for the entry of genetic information. The underlying database can also be incorporated into automated command-line stand-alone annotation tools. ConclusionsHADA can achieve the rapid detection of variants affecting function for different hereditary angioedema types, and further integrates useful information to reduce the diagnosis odyssey and improve its delay.

13. The Influence of COVID-19 on Campus Leaders' Curriculum Integration, Perceptions Towards, and Acquired Expertise in Technology

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of COVID-19 on campus leaders' curriculum integration, perceptions towards the usage, and acquired experience in technology. A purposeful sample of 171 Texas K-12 campus administrators completed the "Principal's Computer Technology Survey." Of those, 10 lead campus administrators participated in one-on-one semistructured interviews. Findings indicated campus leaders' curriculum integration and perceptions towards technology were significantly influenced by COVID-19. Campus leaders admitted that COVID-19 had an impact on relying more on technology regarding communication, teachers requiring more in terms of emotional, behavioral, and technological support, and the use of technology as a replacement versus creation.

14. The Teaching of Introductory Statistics: Results of a National Survey

Abstract

The "Statistics Teaching Inventory" (STI) was designed to assess the teaching practices of U.S.-based, college-level introductory statistics instructors in a variety of institutions and departments. This instrument has now been updated to reflect current trends and recommendations in statistics education. In this study, we used the STI to examine the current state of the curricular and instructional practices being used by U.S.-based, college-level introductory statistics instructors. We explore the extent to which instructors report that their introductory statistics courses are aligned with recommended practices as outlined by the 2016 GAISE College Report. Data were collected from a sample of college-level U.S.-based, college-level introductory statistics instructors. Results based on 228 usable responses indicated that instructors, by-and-large, tended to be following the GAISE recommendations, especially related to content. However, courses may not yet be aligned with newer content recommendations (e.g., provide students opportunities to work with multivariate data), and there is still a large percentage of instructors that are not embracing student-oriented pedagogies and assessment methods. Abstract

Abstract Background We used the Spanish national hospital discharge data from 2016 to 2022 to analyze procedures and hospital outcomes among patients aged ≥ 18 years admitted for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non–ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) according to diabetes mellitus (DM) status (non-diabetic, type 1-DM or type 2-DM). Methods We built logistic regression models for STEMI/NSTEMI stratified by DM status to identify variables associated with in-hospital mortality (IHM). We analyzed the effect of DM on IHM. Results Spanish hospitals reported 201,950 STEMIs (72.7% non-diabetic, 0.5% type 1-DM, and 26.8% type 2-DM; 26.3% female) and 167,285 NSTEMIs (61.6% non-diabetic, 0.6% type 1-DM, and 37.8% type 2-DM; 30.9% female). Abstract

Objective. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of individuals with post-coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) condition symptoms who underwent a supervised telerehabilitation and home-based respiratory muscle training (TSHB-RMT) program. Methods. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Participants were recruited using purposeful sampling. The inclusion criteria consisted of: patients aged over 18 years who presented persistent COVID-19 symptoms of fatigue and dyspnea for at least 3 months after the COVID-19 diagnosis. In total, 28 patients were included. In-depth interviews and researcher field notes were used to collect the data. A thematic analysis was performed. Results. Three themes reflect the patients' perspective on the TSHB-RMT before the program (reasons for participating), during the treatment program, and upon completion of the study. Among the reasons for participation, participants highlighted the absence of improvement and treatment, and feeling abandoned and forgotten by the health system. The treatment required discipline on behalf of the patients. Mondays and Tuesdays were the most difficult days for performing the therapy, and the physical therapist was perceived as a tool for adherence, change, and a source of validated information. The patients perceived positive effects quite soon; however, it was necessary to extend the follow-up after completing the program because they abandoned the program due to the lack of guidance for exercise supervision. Conclusion. This study described relevant aspects that physical therapist professionals should consider when providing TSHB-RMT treatment. Impact. TSHB-RMT requires discipline, perseverance, effort, and a commitment to the group. The physical therapist is perceived as the tool that facilitates adherence and participation. The effects are rapidly perceived, leading to improved self-confidence and autonomy; however, it is necessary to increase the follow-up time.
