Sodium (Na) ion batteries (SIB) hold great importance in energy storage due to their potential to offer a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Na is abundantly available and less expensive than lithium, making it an attractive option for large-scale energy storage applications. In the present work, we have predicted a series of 2D transition metal (TM) Si-chalcogenides (TMSiCs), TM 2 X 2 Si (TM = Ta, Nb and X = S, Se), which exhibit metallic characteristics. All these materials are dynamically stable, but only Ta 2 S 2 Si, Ta 2 Se 2 Si and Nb 2 Se 2 Si are thermally stable even at an elevated temperature of 400 K. Through first-principles calculations, we show that Ta 2 S 2 Si, Ta 2 Se 2 Si and Nb 2 Se 2 Si are promising anode materials for SIB. These materials have a low Na migration barrier in the range of 0.13 to 0.17 eV, which could enhance the cycling performance of the SIB. The calculated average open circuit voltage (OCV) is small, i.e. 0.48, 0.4 and 0.47 V for Ta 2 S 2 Si, Ta 2 Se 2 Si and Nb 2 Se 2 Si, respectively, which suggests the possibility of higher output voltage and larger energy density of the battery. The maximum Na ion capacities for Ta 2 S 2 Si, Ta 2 Se 2 Si and Nb 2 Se 2 Si are calculated to be 206.6, 171.3 and 252.4 mA h g -1 , respectively. Our results could provide fundamental insights into TM 2 X 2 Si for energy storage applications.

The search for high-performance catalysts to improve the catalytic activity for an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for developing a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Using the first-principles method, we have performed computational screening on a series of transition metal (TM) atoms embedded in monolayer Nb 2 S 2 C to enhance the ORR activity. Through the scaling relationship and volcano plot, our results reveal that the introduction of a single Ni or Rh atom through substitutional doping into monolayer Nb 2 S 2 C yields promising ORR catalysts with low overpotentials of 0.52 and 0.42 V, respectively. These doped atoms remain intact on the monolayer Nb 2 S 2 C even at elevated temperatures. Importantly, the catalytic activity of the Nb 2 S 2 C doped with a TM atom can be effectively correlated with an intrinsic descriptor, which can be computed based on the number of d orbital electrons and the electronegativity of TM and O atoms.

Manipulation of polarization states in a complex structured optical field during propagation has become an important topic due to its fundamental interest and potential applications. This work demonstrates the effect of the caustic and twisting phases on the polarization states of a vector beam experimentally and theoretically. The novel properties of polarization evolution, especially the conversions of different states of polarization (SoPs) in a twisted caustic vector beam, occur during propagation in free space because of the modulation of twisting and caustic phases. The orthogonal polarization components tend to appear on the beam centers of two foci, and the two focal distances are closely related to the caustic and twisting phases. The twisting and caustic phases can manipulate the conversions between linear and circular polarization components that occur during propagation. These results provide a new approach to more complex manipulations of a structured optical field, especially in tailoring the evolution of polarization states and two foci. They may find potential applications in the corresponding field.

Polarization dehazing imaging has been used to restore images degraded by scattering media, particularly in turbid water environments. While learning-based approaches have shown promise in improving the performance of underwater polarimetric dehazing, most current networks rely heavily on data-driven techniques without consideration of physics principles or real physical processes. This work proposes, what we believe to be, a novel Mueller transform matrix network (MTM-Net) for underwater polarimetric image recovery that considers the physical dehazing model adopting the Mueller matrix method, significantly improving the recovery performance. The network is trained with a loss function that combines content and pixel losses to facilitate detail recovery, and is sped up with the inverse residuals and channel attention structure without decreasing image recovery quality. A series of ablation experiment results and comparative tests confirm the performance of this method with a better recovery effect than other methods. These results provide deeper understanding of underwater polarimetric dehazing imaging and further expand the functionality of polarimetric dehazing method.

The electromechanical properties of monolayer 1-T NiTe 2 under charge actuation were investigated using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Monolayer 1-T NiTe 2 in its pristine form has a work area density per cycle of up to 5.38 MJ m -3 nm upon charge injection and it can generate a strain and a stress of 1.51% and 0.96 N m -1 , respectively. We found that defects in the form of vacancies can be exploited to modulate the electromechanical properties of this material. The presence of Ni-vacancies can further enhance the generated stress by 22.5%. On the other hand, with Te-vacancies, it is possible to improve the work area density per cycle by at least 145% and also to enhance the induced strain from 1.51% to 2.92%. The effect of charge polarity on the contraction and expansion of monolayer 1T-NiTe 2 was investigated. Due to its excellent environmental stability and good electromechanical properties, monolayer NiTe 2 is considered to be a promising electrode material for electroactive polymer (EAP) based actuators.

We revisit the Kittel's model of antiferroelectricity by extending the model to study the phase transitions, hysteresis loop behaviors and electrocaloric effect (ECE) of antiferroelectrics (AFEs). By considering both the first- and second-order AFEs, explicit expressions for the physical and staggered polarizations of AFEs in the stable states are derived. We also obtain the analytical solutions for describing the dielectric susceptibilities of AFEs in the AFE and paraelectric (PE) phases. Coercive fields in AFE are also derived and studied. To verify the usefulness of the Kittel's model of antiferroelectricity, we apply the model to systematically investigate the phase transitions, hysteresis loops and ECEs of PbZrO 3 (PZO). By adopting appropriate values of the Kittel's parameters for first-order transition, analytical and numerical results are obtained and discussed. Our results show that PZO exhibits a complex temperature ( T )-electric field ( E ) phase diagram, consisting of the AFE, ferroelectrics, ferrielectric, PE and mixed phases. The T-E phase diagram is qualitatively agreed with the new AFE model that was derived based on symmetry by Tolédano and Khalyavin (2019 Phys. Rev. B 99 024105). We found that the calculated zero-field dielectric susceptibility is qualitatively and quantitatively agreed with experimental results. We show that the polarizations and dielectric susceptibilities of PZO in heating and cooling deviate from each other, as expected for the first-order materials. Our calculated results also reveal that the ECE in PZO has an electro-heating of Δ T ≈ +6.5 °C and an electro-cooling of Δ T ≈ -4.0 °C, respectively, which are comparable to the experimental results., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Based on first-principles calculations, we propose a new two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure that can be used as a photocatalyst for water splitting. The heterostructure consists of vertically stacked 2D NbSe 2 H and graphene-like ZnO (g-ZnO). Depending on the stacking orders, we identified two configurations that have high binding energies with an energy band gap of >2.6 eV. These 2D systems form a type-II heterostructure which enables the separation of photoexcited electrons and holes. The presence of a strong electrostatic potential difference across the 2D NbSe 2 H and g-ZnO interface is expected to suppress the electron-hole recombination leading to an enhancement in the efficiency of the photocatalytic activity. Our study also shows that the 2D NbSe 2 H/g-ZnO vdW heterostructure has good thermodynamic properties for water splitting. Furthermore, the optical absorption of the 2D NbSe 2 H/g-ZnO vdW heterostructure extends into the visible light region. Our results suggest that the 2D NbSe 2 H/g-ZnO vdW heterostructure is a promising photocatalytic material for water splitting.

In this work, we systematically studied the deposition, characterization, and crystal structure modeling of ScAlN thin film. Measurements of the piezoelectric device's relevant material properties, such as crystal structure, crystallographic orientation, and piezoelectric response, were performed to characterize the Sc 0.29 Al 0.71 N thin film grown using pulsed DC magnetron sputtering. Crystal structure modeling of the ScAlN thin film is proposed and validated, and the structure-property relations are discussed. The investigation results indicated that the sputtered thin film using seed layer technique had a good crystalline quality and a clear grain boundary. In addition, the effective piezoelectric coefficient d 33 was up to 12.6 pC/N, and there was no wurtzite-to-rocksalt phase transition under high pressure. These good features demonstrated that the sputtered ScAlN is promising for application in high-coupling piezoelectric devices with high-pressure stability.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have recently emerged as potential candidates for high-capacity lithium-ion batteries anode materials because of their compelling physicochemical and structural properties. In the present study, we use first-principles calculations to investigate the performance of 2D Mg 2 C as anode materials for Li, Na, K and Ca-ions batteries. The calculated average open-circuit voltage are 0.37, 0.50, 0.03 and 0.06 eV vs Li, Na, K, Ca. No significant structural deformations are observed on the 2D Mg 2 C upon the adsorption of Li, Na, K or Ca and the metallic characteristic of the 2D Mg 2 C is retained. The metallic behaviour of both pristine and adsorbed Mg 2 C ensures the desirable electric conductivity, implying the advantages of 2D Mg 2 C for batteries. The Na and K atoms show an extremely high diffusivity on the 2D Mg 2 C with a low energy barrier of 0.08 and 0.04 eV respectively, which is about an order of magnitude smaller than that of Li atom. For the Na and K atoms, the theoretical storage capacity can reach up to 1770 mAh g -1 , nearly two times that of the Li atom of 885 mAh g -1 . Our study suggests that the 2D Mg 2 C is a promising anode material which offers a fast ion diffusion and high storage capacity.

We propose a thermodynamic model to the study the antiferroelectric (AFE) phase transitions in antiferroelectric-ferroelectric (AFE-FE) superlattices in which the coupling at the interface between two layers is mediated by local polarizations. Phase diagram of the AFE layer in term of the degree of interfacial effect λ and temperature T involving ferrielectric (FI) and ferroelectric (FE) phases is investigated. These two phases are stabilized by the interfacial effect and internal electric field. AFE thickness L AFE versus T phase diagram is also constructed. Intermediate regions of two-phase coexistence (IM) emerge in the λ - T and L AFE - T phase diagrams, if certain interface properties λ and layer thickness L AFE criteria are met. These IM regions are metastable states, which exist as a transition state between two phases. A tricritical point locates at the boundaries across the FI, IM and FE phases is found in the L AFE - T phase diagram. Competition among the internal electric field due to the electrostatic coupling, the FE ordering arises from the interfacial effect and the antiferroelectric ordering within the AFE layer giving rises to the rich AFE phase diagram., (© 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Propagation of a vector vortex optical field (VVOF) with both fractional order of polarization topological charge $m$m and fractional order of vortex topological charge $n$n with spatially variant states of polarization (SoP) in a strongly nonlocal nonlinear medium (SNNM) is studied. The optical field always evolves reciprocally with a cycle of stretch and shrink in a SNNM with dark stripes forming at $z=t\pi {z_p}$z=tπz p ($t$t denotes an integer number, and ${{z}_p}$z p is a parameter that depends on the initial power of the VVOF and the material constant associated with the response function), as a result from the coherent superposition of the vortices with different order of topological charges and weighting coefficients. In particular, the conversions between linear and circular polarization components occur during propagation, and the converted SoP distributions in different propagation distances depend closely on the topological charges and the initial powers. The evolutions of the Stokes parameters of the fractional-order VVOF (FO-VVOF) during propagation in a SNNM show that the spatial distributions of different polarization components are closely related to the topological charges, the initial powers and the propagation distances, implying that the FO-VVOF can be regarded as a superposition of two different fractional-order vortices with orthogonal circular polarization components. These results provide new strategies on tailoring polarization states in a structured optical field with fractional topological charges.

The ability of band offsets at multiferroic/metal and multiferroic/electrolyte interfaces in controlling charge transfer and thus altering the photoactivity performance has sparked significant attention in solar energy conversion applications. Here, we demonstrate that the band offsets of the two interfaces play the key role in determining charge transport direction in a downward self-polarized BFO film. Electrons tend to move to BFO/electrolyte interface for water reduction. Our experimental and first-principle calculations reveal that the presence of neodymium (Nd) dopants in BFO enhances the photoelectrochemical performance by reduction of the local electron-hole pair recombination sites and modulation of the band gap to improve the visible light absorption. This opens a promising route to the heterostructure design by modulating the band gap to promote efficient charge transfer.

We have performed computational molecular modelling to study the polarization switching and hysteresis loop behaviours of DNA and RNA nucleobases using the PM3 semi-empirical quantum mechanical approaches. All the nucleobases: adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and uracil (U) were modelled. Our study indicates that all the nucleobases exhibit a zero-field polarization due to the presence of polar atoms or molecules such as amidogen and carbonyl. The shape of polarization P versus an applied electric field E hysteresis loop is square, implying typical ferroelectrics behaviour. The total energy U as a function of an applied electric field E exhibits a butterfly-like loop. The presence of zero-field polarization and ferroelectrics hysteresis loop behaviours in nucleobases may support the hypothesis of the existence of bioferroelectricity in DNA and RNA. We also found an interesting relationship between the minimum electric field required for switching [Formula: see text] and the ratio of the topological polar surface area (TPSA) to the total surface area (TSA) of a nucleobase. In particular, the [Formula: see text] of a nucleobase is inversely proportional to the TPSA/TSA ratio. This work may provide useful information for understanding the possible existence of ferroelectricity in biomaterials.

The corrosion of iron presents an important scientific problem and a serious economic issue. It is also one of the most important subjects in materials science because it is basically an electrochemical process and closely related to other topics such as the electrocatalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction. So far, many studies have been conducted to address the corrosion of iron, a very complicated process that occurs when iron is exposed to oxygen and water. An important question is, at which site of the iron surface the corrosion starts and how it results in the final stage of the corrosion. In the present study, as an example of superficial defects, Fe dimers sticking out of Fe(100) surfaces are considered in order to understand the iron corrosion process from first-principles using density functional theory. We found that the Fe dimers spontaneously react with O 2 and H 2 O to form Fe 2 (OH) 4 + 4OH - . Here, it is interesting to note that the Fe dimer plays the role of a water splitting catalyst, because the space above it is always vacant and can accept oxygen molecules many times for reacting with the surrounding water molecules. Then, if the Fe 2 (OH) 4 molecules are detached from the surface, they react with O 2 to form Fe 2 O(OH) 4 without an activation barrier, and, in turn, the Fe 2 O(OH) 4 and H 2 O molecules react to form Fe 2 (OH) 6 complexes with an activation energy of 0.653 eV. If these complexes further dissociate into Fe(OH) 3 molecules, they react with each other to form Fe 2 O 3 ·2H 2 O with an activation energy of 0.377 eV. This work may provide useful information on possible iron corrosion processes by water in the air.

The collapse dynamics of a structured optical field with a distribution of spatially-variant states of polarization (SoP) and a spiral phase in the field cross section is studied using the two-dimensional coupled nonlinear Schrӧdinger equations. The self-focusing of a structured optical field with an inhomogeneous SoP distribution can give rise to new phenomena of collapse dynamics that is completely different from a scalar field. The collapse patterns are closely related to the topological charges of the vortexas well as the polarization, the initial power, and the SoP distribution in the field cross section. A single on-axis collapse or multiple off-axis partial collapses may occur due to the self-focusing effects of linearly, elliptically and circularly polarized components located at different positions of the field cross-section. The polarization in the core of the collapsing beam is always linearly polarized. The structured collapsing beams, which are driven by the vortex, propagate along a spiral trajectory in a saturated medium.

A caustic vector vortex optical field is experimentally generated and demonstrated by a caustic-based approach. The desired caustic with arbitrary acceleration trajectories, as well as the structured states of polarization (SoP) and vortex orders located in different positions in the field cross-section, is generated by imposing the corresponding spatial phase function in a vector vortex optical field. Our study reveals that different spin and orbital angular momentum flux distributions (including opposite directions) in different positions in the cross-section of a caustic vector vortex optical field can be dynamically managed during propagation by intentionally choosing the initial polarization and vortex topological charges, as a result of the modulation of the caustic phase. We find that the SoP in the field cross-section rotates during propagation due to the existence of the vortex. The unique structured feature of the caustic vector vortex optical field opens the possibility of multi-manipulation of optical angular momentum fluxes and SoP, leading to more complex manipulation of the optical field scenarios. Thus this approach further expands the functionality of an optical system.

Here we study systematically the self-focusing dynamics and collapse of vortex Airy optical beams in a Kerr medium. The collapse is suppressed compared to a non-vortex Airy beam in a Kerr medium due to the existence of vortex fields. The locations of collapse depend sensitively on the initial power, vortex order, and modulation parameters. The collapse may occur in a position where the initial field is nearly zero, while no collapse appears in the region where the initial field is mainly distributed. Compared with a non-vortex Airy beam, the collapse of a vortex Airy beam can occur at a position away from the area of the initial field distribution. Our study shows the possibility of controlling and manipulating the collapse, especially the precise position of collapse, by purposely choosing appropriate initial power, vortex order or modulation parameters of a vortex Airy beam.

Background Aims: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) may improve cardiac function following myocardial infarction. MSC can differentiate into cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells while exerting additional paracrine effects. There is limited information regarding the efficacy of route for MSC treatment of severe dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The aim of this study was to demonstrate the clinical safety, feasibility and efficacy of direct intramyocardial and intracoronary administration of autologous bone marrow-derived MSC treatment for no-option patients with chronic severe refractory DCM., Methods: Ten symptomatic patients with DCM and refractory cardiac function, despite maximum medical therapy, were selected. Five had ischemic DCM deemed unlikely to benefit from revascularization alone and underwent bypass operations with concurrent intramyocardial MSC injection (group A). Two patients had previous revascularization and three had non-ischemic DCM and received intracoronary MSC injection (group B)., Results: Group A and B patients received 0.5-1.0 × 10(6) and 2.0-3.0 × 10(6) MSC/kg body weight, respectively. All patients remained alive at 1 year. There were significant improvements from baseline to 6 and 12 months in left ventricular ejection fraction and other left ventricular parameters. Scar reduction was noted in six patients by 12 months., Conclusions: Autologous bone marrow MSC treatment is safe and feasible for treating chronic severe refractory DCM effectively, via intracoronary or direct intramyocardial administration at prescribed doses.

Eleven cases of duodenal injury are reviewed. A correct preoperative diagnosis was made in only one patient. In 10 patients, the duodenum was disrupted in the second part. When duodenal injury was associated with devitalisation of tissue or there was delay in operative intervention, repair was aided by a serosal patch graft. In these high risk cases, an attempt to defunction the injured area was done by suction gastrostomy or gastrojejunostomy with vagotomy, Three patients died and in two of these, there was delay in surgical intervention.

The efficacy of paravariceal sclerotherapy for bleeding oesophageal varices was evaluated. Alcoholic and post-hepatitis liver cirrhosis were the main causes of portal hypertension. A total of 28 patients between June 1982 and December 1983 were treated by this method using a flexible endoscope. Bleeding was initially controlled in 90% of patients. However 30% of patients developed recurrent bleeding within 12 months. One year survival of the patients was 70% indicating this treatment has no effect on the long term survival of the underlying disease. The technique is discussed and its complications analysed.

There is fairly widespread belief that suppuration superimposed upon acute cholecystitis is a rather uncommon condition. Scanty information on this subject is found in the published literature. No doubt, the scarcity of data further reinforces this clinical impression. Yet, from the few studies available, a surprisingly high incidence (7-11%) is documented. We reviewed 518 patients who underwent emergency cholecystectomy and found 139 cases to have frank pus present within the gallbladder. The clinical presentation is often difficult to distinguish from that of acute cholecystitis but diagnosis is crucial to identify this potentially fatal surgical emergency. There are encouraging reports of specific ultrasonic features which can demonstrate the increased viscosity produced by the purulent and fibrinous content within the gallbladder.

A case of an omental cryptococcal granuloma, believed to be the first reported, presented as an abdominal mass in a 29-year-old man. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a soft, 8-cm lesion in the omentum. Pathologic examination showed this to be a cryptococcal granuloma containing masses of budding, encapsulated yeasts. Aggregates of eosinophils were also noted. This case is unusual in both site (as cryptococcosis tends to localize in the central nervous system) and size.
