This study compared attitudes about helping of preschool children (N=63) in either inclusive classes or classes for typically developing children. Children were interviewed and teachers rated each child's prosocial behaviors. Children in the inclusive classes received significantly higher helping strategy scores and were significantly more likely to refer to disability in their responses. (Contains references.) We conducted a survey of special education teachers to determine their perceptions of the barriers and benefits to the process of Response to Intervention (RTI). This process is used for identification of students with disabilities and for early intervening for students who may or may not qualify for special education services. A total of 211 teachers wrote comments about barriers to successful implementation of RTI and benefits to RTI. The respondents listed several barriers concerning the process, gaps in knowledge, faculty attitudes, and lack of resources. They listed benefits to students in the areas of improved instruction through increased use of assessment and data, early intervening, and use of differentiated instruction. Although teachers listed multiple barriers, they also indicated perceived benefits to themselves and to students from the RTI procedures.

An e-mail survey of special education directors was conducted to ascertain practices related to implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) processes in North Carolina schools. The data indicate that special education directors have information about RTI as a method of identifying students with disabilities, but there is little consensus on the procedural steps for implementation of the RTI process. Multiple professionals were named as persons to be responsible for collecting data, interpreting graphs, and determining students' responsiveness or nonresponsiveness to instruction. Finally, no consensus was found on whether the discrepancy model should be retained or dropped. (Contains 2 tables.)

Comparison of children enrolled in regular (N=31) and inclusive (N=29) preschool programs found that children in inclusive settings had more knowledge of disabilities and gave higher acceptance ratings to children with and without disabilities than did children in regular preschool classes. (DB)

Purpose: Despite significant medication nonadherence rates among youth with pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology disorders, little is known about current adherence practices in pediatric gastroenterology care. This study summarizes current practices surrounding adherence monitoring and intervention in pediatric gastrointestinal (GI) and hepatologic care in the USA.Participants and methods: One hundred and fifty-four pediatric GI providers completed an online survey designed to examine current practices surrounding adherence monitoring and intervention, specific strategies used to monitor and treat poor adherence, and the barriers currently experienced in relation to adherence monitoring and intervention.Results: Practices varied greatly in terms of when and how patient adherence is monitored and by whom; however, physicians and nursing professionals take primary responsibility for adherence monitoring. Approximately 25% utilize screeners to assess adherence, and most participants use patient and caregiver reports as a primary measure of adherence. Most participants rated their level of adherence monitoring and intervention as fair to poor. While most participants perceive adherence monitoring to be very important in clinical practice, only 20.8% perceive being able to significantly modify patient adherence.Conclusion: There exists great variability in adherence monitoring and intervention practices across pediatric GI providers. The reelin signaling pathway has been established as an important regulator of cell migration during development of the central nervous system, and disruptions in reelin signaling alter the positioning of many types of neurons. Reelin is a large extracellular matrix glycoprotein and governs cell migration through activation of multiple intracellular signaling events by means of the receptors ApoE receptor 2 (ApoER2) and very low density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR), and the intracellular adaptor protein Disabled-1 (Dab1). Earlier studies reported expression of reelin in nonneuronal tissues, but the functions of this signaling pathway outside of the nervous system have not been studied until recently. A large body of evidence now suggests that reelin functions during development and disease of multiple nonneuronal tissues. Reelin is a regulator of cell migration in the nervous system, and has other functions in the development of a number of non-neuronal tissues. In addition, alterations in reelin expression levels have been reported in breast, pancreatic, liver, gastric, and other cancers. Reelin is normally expressed in mammary gland stromal cells, but whether stromal reelin contributes to breast cancer progression is unknown. Herein, we used a syngeneic mouse mammary tumor transplantation model to examine the impact of host-derived reelin on breast cancer progression. We found that transplanted syngeneic tumors grew more slowly in reelin-deficient ( rl ) mice and had delayed metastatic colonization of the lungs. Immunohistochemistry of primary tumors revealed that tumors grown in rl animals had fewer blood vessels and increased macrophage infiltration. Gene expression studies from tumor tissues indicate that loss of host-derived reelin alters the balance of M1- and M2-associated macrophage markers, suggesting that reelin may influence the polarization of these cells. Consistent with this, rl M1-polarized bone marrow-derived macrophages have heightened levels of the M1-associated cytokines iNOS and IL-6.
