Beekeepers need new treatment options for controlling small hive beetles (Aethina tumida), a devastating honey bee (Apis mellifera) pest. For many years, commercial beekeepers in the U.S. have used gel roach baits off-label as a method for treating SHBs. Herein, we evaluated the acute toxicity of active ingredients commonly found in gel roach baits, including abamectin, clothianidin, hydramethylnon, fipronil, and indoxacarb through topical and oral routes of exposure against SHBs and honey bees. Additionally, coumaphos, the active ingredient of the only registered in-hive control treatment for SHBs, was evaluated to provide a comparison to the gel roach bait active ingredients. Fipronil was the most toxic compound to SHBs topically (LD50 = 0.23 ng/SHB) and through pollen (LC50 = 0.06 µg/g pollen). Fipronil (LD50 = 0.31 ng/honey bee) had a selectivity ratio of 1.3, suggesting that it is more toxic to SHBs than it is to honey bees, but only to a small degree. Abamectin, clothianidin, hydramethylnon, and indoxacarb had a higher toxicity to honey bees than to SHBs through topical exposure. Our results suggest that gel roach baits and their active ingredients are toxic to honey bees and pose a serious risk to colony safety if used as in-hive treatments.

Vairimorpha (formerly Nosema) apis and V. ceranae are microsporidian pathogens that are of concern for managed honey bee colonies. Multiple treatments have been proposed to be effective in reducing the prevalence and intensity of Vairimorpha spp. infections. Here, we test the efficacy of these products in one lab-based experiment and three field experiments. In the lab experiment, we found no reductions in Vairimorpha spp. prevalence (proportion of individuals infected with Vairimorpha spp.) or intensity (number of Vairimorpha spp. spores per individual), but we did find a decrease in honey bee survival after treatment with Fumagilin-B, Honey-B-Healthy®, and Nozevit Plus. The first field experiment showed increased Vairimorpha spp. intensity in colonies treated with Fumagilin-B and HiveAlive® compared to a negative control (sucrose syrup alone). The second field experiment showed a weak reduction in Vairimorpha spp. intensity after 3 weeks post treatment with Fumagilin-B compared to Nozevit. However, Vairimorpha spp. intensity returned to levels comparable to those of other treatment groups after 5 weeks post treatment and remained similar to those of other groups for the duration of the experiment. The final field trial showed no positive or negative effects of treatment with Fumagilin-B or Nosevit on Vairimorpha spp. prevalence or intensity. These findings raise questions regarding the efficacy of the products currently being used by beekeepers to control Vairimorpha spp. We argue that the observed reduction of Vairimorpha spp. is more likely relevant to the phenology of spore prevalence and intensity in honey bee colonies than to chemical treatment.

Apis nigrocincta Smith (1860) is a cavity-nesting honey bee native to the Philippines and Indonesia. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services – Division of Plant Industry’s Apiary Inspection Section is actively screening for invasive honey bee species in an effort to eradicate unwanted pests. This bee is not currently considered a threat to Florida, but state researchers are actively screening honey bees of unknown origins using molecular markers to detect the presence of Apis nigrocincta.

Beekeepers need new registered products to control the small hive beetle (SHB), Aethina tumida, a significant pest of western honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. Few approved chemical controls exist, and there is no standardized system for screening compounds against SHBs. We outline a detailed method for an acute toxicity bioassay that delivers compounds via pollen. We provide a detailed method for a field trial that delivers treated pollen in traps made from modified compact disc cases. We applied both methods in proof-of-concept experiments to assess acetamiprid as a SHB control agent. Using the laboratory bioassay, we found acetamiprid (LC50 = 20.5 µg/g) to be more toxic to SHBs than coumaphos was (LC50 = 1250 µg/g), yet less toxic to SHBs than fipronil was (LC50 = 1.78 µg/g). In our field trial, colonies treated with acetamiprid and fipronil significantly reduced (p < 0.001) live SHB populations over those of control colonies. Traps containing acetamiprid retained significantly higher (p < 0.001) numbers of dead SHBs than did traps containing fipronil. We outline the first detailed methods to assess the toxicity of compounds delivered in pollen for adult SHB control. Our proof-of-concept experiments showed acetamiprid to be a promising control agent for SHBs.

The American black bear is beloved, but it is also the most damaging vertebrate pest of honey bee apiaries in North America. That is in part because bears and beekeepers often share the same home territory. Many top beekeeping and pollination states also fall within the range of the American black bear. Abstract Conservation management often uses information on genetic population structure to assess the importance of local provenancing for ecological restoration and reintroduction programs. For species that do not exhibit complete reproductive isolation, the estimation of population genetic parameters may be influenced by the extent of admixture. Therefore, to avoid perverse outcomes for conservation, genetically informed management strategies must determine whether hybridization between species is relevant, and the extent to which observed population genetic patterns are shaped by interspecific versus intraspecific gene flow. We used genotyping by sequencing to identify over 2,400 informative single nucleotide polymorphisms across 18 populations of Eucalyptus regnans F. Muell., a foundation tree species of montane forests in south‐eastern Australia. We used these data to determine the extent of hybridization with another species, Eucalyptus obliqua L'Hér., and investigate how admixture influences genetic diversity parameters, by estimating metrics of genetic diversity and examining population genetic structure in datasets with and without admixed individuals. We found hybrid individuals at all sites and two highly introgressed populations. Hybrid individuals were not distributed evenly across environmental gradients, with logistic regression identifying hybrids as being associated with temperature. Removal of hybrids resulted in increases in genetic differentiation (FST), expected heterozygosity, observed heterozygosity and the inbreeding coefficient, and different patterns of isolation by distance. After removal of hybrids and introgressed populations, mountain ash showed very little population genetic structure, with a small effect of isolation by distance, and very low global FST(0.03). Our study shows that, in plants, decisions around provenancing of individuals for restoration depend on knowledge of whether hybridization is influencing population genetic structure. For species in which most genetic variation is held within populations, there may be little benefit in planning conservation strategies around environmental adaptation of seed sources. The possibility for adaptive introgression may also be relevant when species regularly hybridize.

Vespa mandarinia Smith, commonly called the Asian giant hornet, is the largest hornet in the world. Its size and distinctive markings make it easily distinguishable from other Asian hornet species. Not only is the wasp occasionally life-threatening to humans, it can decimate a number of insect colonies, most notably wild and farmed honey bees. Vespa mandarinia is native to Japan and occurs in several countries in Asia. The first Vespa madarinia hornet detected in the United States was in Washington State in 2019. The yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina (Lepeletier), is a pest of concern outside of its native range. Vespa velutina is native to Southeast Asia and has invaded several regions in Europe, first appearing in France in 2004. As a generalist predator, they are a pest of honey bees and a major concern to many beekeepers. Vespa velutina has not been intercepted in North America, but it is believed to have high invasion potential.

Originally from eastern Asia, the giant resin bee, Megachile sculpturalis (Smith), was accidentally introduced into the United States in the 1990s. It is considered an adventive (not native and usually not established) species and is present in most states in the eastern US. Although these bees can be found on various plants, they typically prefer plants that have been introduced from their native area. Some have observed that when collecting pollen or nectar, Megachile sculpturalis will damage local flora, making it unusable to future bee visitors. Nosema are single-celled fungal parasites that infect various animal hosts. One species, Nosema ceranae, has become the dominant microsporidian infection in western honey bee colonies. When honey bees ingest Nosema spores, many eventually starve to death because the spores replicate in the stomach and hijack the bee’s nutrition. The risk of Nosema infection can be particularly unsettling to beekeepers because colonies often do not show signs of infection until the colony is severely diminished. Point- and non-point source nutrients are likely to have different ecological impacts in receiving waters, due to differences in the concentration and proportions of nutrient fractions. However, the direct comparison of their ecological impacts in receiving waters has barely been quantified. We undertook algal bioassays with algal communities from river sites and showed that there was a photosynthetic yield (Fv/Fm) response to nutrient enrichment when river nutrient concentrations were relatively low, but not at higher nutrient concentrations. To combat this variability in the photosynthetic state of algae, we developed a standardized algal bioassay (3-day), using a cultured species of algae which was starved of nitrogen, to compare the photosynthetic response to three nitrogen sources: treated wastewater, aquaculture farm discharges, and soil erosion-derived nutrient sources. This study showed that the nutrient parameter that had the highest correlation with algal photosynthetic response was total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), i.e., the sum of dissolved inorganic and organic nitrogen, rather than dissolved inorganic nitrogen alone. This was true across all three nutrient sources (R2 = 0.58–0.78). Additionally, the same concentrations of TDN from soil erosion-derived and aquaculture samples resulted in a significantly higher algal photosynthetic response, compared to the treated wastewater. This indicates that TDN from soils and aquaculture farms was significantly more bioavailable to the cultured algae than treated wastewater. When a range of parameters were correlated with algal responses, organic and inorganic nutrients, and organic carbon were the parameters that had the highest explanatory power for soil erosion-derived and aquaculture samples (R2 = 0.75–0.87). The importance of organic compounds in these equations points to the potential of microbial transformation of organic nutrients into more bioavailable forms during the 3-day bioassay. This highlights the need to understand the relationship between algal and microbial communities in natural systems for nutrient source impact assessment. This study provides an improved understanding and metrics for comparing the algal growth response to different nutrient sources.

The skin presents a multifaceted microbiome, a balanced coexistence of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. These resident microorganisms are fundamental in upholding skin health by both countering detrimental pathogens and working in tandem with the skin’s immunity. Disruptions in this balance, known as dysbiosis, can lead to disorders like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Central to the skin’s defense system are mast cells. These are strategically positioned within the skin layers, primed for rapid response to any potential foreign threats. Recent investigations have started to unravel the complex interplay between these mast cells and the diverse entities within the skin’s microbiome. This relationship, especially during times of both balance and imbalance, is proving to be more integral to skin health than previously recognized. In this review, we illuminate the latest findings on the ties between mast cells and commensal skin microorganisms, shedding light on their combined effects on skin health and maladies.

A model describing a pinned evaporating drop is introduced; the numerical resolution of the model allows the description of heat and fluid flow within the drop. The role of humidity in the gas phase is investigated, by taking into account the vapour diffusion process. It is shown that the change in substrate temperature has the most important effect on the evaporation rate. The results show that surface tension in comparison to the gravity convection is more accurate in describing evaporation of small droplets.

The theoretical relationship between the extent of cure and the temperature obtained in thermoset polyester resins is introduced. The curing behavior of resins in the presence of reinforcing phases was also investigated using a computer-assisted thermal analysis system.
