The aim of this paper is to make an introduction, review and preliminary investigation tasks of the application of Silicon Carbide (SiC) power semiconductors and magnetoresistive (MR) current sensors for Solid State Power Controllers (SSPCs) and controlled switches, especially for high temperature environment and/or high voltage applications.

This paper presents the benefits and drawbacks of replacing the traditional Si Mosfets transistors with enhancement mode GaN transistors in a Half-Bridge Zero Voltage and Zero Current Switching Power Switching (ZVZCPS) converter. This type of converters is usually used as Electronic Power Converters (EPC) for telecommunication satellites travelling-wave tube amplifiers (TWTAs). In this study, firstly the converter is theoretically analysed, obtaining its operation, losses and efficiency equations. From these equations, optimizations maps based on the main system parameters are obtained. These optimization maps are the key to quantify the potential benefits of GaN transistors in this type of converters. Theoretical results show that using GaN transistors, the frequency of the converter can be pushed from 125kHz to 830kHz without sacrificing the converter efficiency. This frequency increase is directly related to reduction on the EPC size and weight.

In this paper, a new design of a broadband planar printed antenna based on the academic log periodic antenna is presented. The antenna consists of a series of printed dipoles, distributed on both faces of the substrate. Some configurations are explored, with a different number of printed dipoles. These are designed, simulated, fabricated, and measured. The calculated and measured return losses and radiation patterns are presented. The utility of the proposed antenna associated with its frequency bandwidth is better than 80%. The measured absolute gain is 6.5 dBi, and the front-to-back ratio is around 8 dB. The presented antenna should find wide applications in wireless communication systems and phased arrays. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper details the design and implementation of a photovoltaic current - voltage (I-V) tracer. The I-V tracer employs a capacitive load controlled by a raspberry pi model 4B. The complete measurement system includes protections, capacitor charging/discharging power electronics and current, voltage, irradiance and temperature sensors. Results, which include maximum power point, open circuit voltage, short circuit current and module efficiency, are displayed on an LCD touch display. Detailed description of the required software and the graphical user interface is also presented. A novel biomaterial (HA-SBA-15) has been developed based on the growth of calcium phosphate hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles within an organized silica structure (SBA-15). Characterization of the material was carried out using a combination of X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and nuclear magnetic resonance. Transmission electron microscopy observations and N2 porosimetry revealed the crystallization of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles inside the mesopore cavities of the silica structure. Specific surface areas of 760 m2 g(-1) and 260 m2 g(-1) were measured for the SBA-15 and the HA-SBA-15 material, respectively. The hydroxyl groups present in the silica nanostructure surface have brought about cationic defects in the silicium sites, mainly with those of tetrahedral symmetry, and promoted the formation of siloxanes. 29Si MAS-NMR analysis shows a significant reduction of the silanol groups concentration with HA growing within the base (SBA-15) material. Studies and brain tissue biocompatibility tests were carried out. Histopathological studies on the SBA-15 implant material showed no changes to the tissue nearby. The results confirmed the synthesis of a silica-based composite containing HA nanoparticles with the potential for biomedical applications.
