Abstract

Both passive and active, single mode, wavelength and polarization insensitive design of Al2O3 rib waveguides on SiO2 substrate is reported. Influence of the waveguide height, etch depth, waveguide width and operation wavelength to the mode number, mode size, birefringence and polarization sensitivity were analyzed with Beam Propagation Method. Design parameters for targeted properties are computed for waveguide widths ranging from 0 to 10 µm, and for etch depth ranging from 0 to 0.5 µm for fixed waveguide height of 0.5 µm. A design window for a fixed width of 3.5 µm and etch depths between 0.325 to 0.375 µm is identified for single mode, wavelength and polarization insensitive operation of Al2O3 waveguides on thermal oxide. A novel rib TE mode selective filter design is also suggested as an output of the numerical simulations.

14. High-Gain Er3+:Al2O3 On-Chip Waveguide Amplifiers.

Abstract

In this work, high-gain on-chip Er3+ doped Al2O3 single-mode ridge waveguide amplifier device is reported. The growth of the active layer is realized using atomic layer deposition (ALD) compatible with Si processing technology. Optimization of the Al2O3 and Er2O3 growth conditions for fine-tuning the optical properties is systematically investigated. In order to optimize the active ion concentration, heterocycle structures consisting of separately optimized Al2O3 and Er2O3 are deposited. The structural and optical properties of the active layers were characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence, and optical gain measurements. We demonstrated up to 2.74 ± 0.40 dB total gain and 13.71 ± 1.97 dB/cm internal optical net gain per unit length at 1550 ± 12 nm using a 2-mm-long device, pumped using a 980 nm laser diode at 23-mW. This work can be expanded to other rare-earth ion doping processes, paving the way to significant improvements of active on-chip applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Yalnızca deney sonucunda elde edilen veriler kullanılmış gerçek veriler veya makro modellere yer verilmemiştir. Deneysel sonuçlar haricinde hiçbir ampirik analiz yapılmamıştır. Bu deneyin amacı, simülasyon davranışları bireysel davranışları gözlemlemek olduğu için, makro tahmin ve analizler yerine bireysel stratejilere davranışsal açıklamalar sunulmuştur. Bireysel davranışlara açıklama sunan sosyal tercih modelleri ve politik rekabet teorileri tasarlanan deney dahilinde test edilmiştir. Sonuçlar, politikacı rolündeki bireylerin faydalarını maksimize etmek için farklı stratejiler izleyebileceklerini gösterir niteliktedir. Oyun sonuçlarına göre seçmenlerin çoğu kendi faydaları doğrultusunda oy verdiler yani, bencil oy verme davranış daha yüksek orandadır. In this thesis, theoretical explanations on political decisions are tested experimentally. By using the assumptions of formal theories and predictions of the relevant models, a game has been designed as a political election simulation. Data from the experiment is analyzed; no macro data has been used. Except for the experimental outcomes, no empirical evidence is yielded. The aim of this experiment was to observe individual behaviors in a simulation. Therefore, instead of providing macro predictions and empirical evidence, this study provides explanations from behavioral economics approach to individual strategies. Social preference models and political competition theory has been examined by using an experimental model. This study showed that individuals as politicians pursued strategies to maximize their votes. On the other hand, we observed that voters mostly vote self interestedly. 90

European Corrosion Congress 2011, EUROCORR 2011 -- 4 September 2011 through 8 September 2011 -- Stockholm, Composite bipolar plates for direct peroxide/peroxide fuel cell (DPPFC) were prepared using natural graphite and phenol formaldehyde resin. The corrosion behavior of composites in DPPFC environments was studied using polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The plates were characterized for electrical conductivity, mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. The corrosion current density at the optimum composition was found to be 16.82 mA cm- 2 for alkaline fuel cell environments.

Abstract

Thin layers of Al2O3:Er3+ were reactively co-sputtered onto thermally oxidized silicon wafers and microstructured by reactive ion etching. Channel waveguides with losses of 0.3 dB/cm at 1.5 µm were obtained. Internal net optical gain was achieved over a bandwidth of 80 nm (1500-1580 nm), with a peak gain of 2.0 dB/cm at 1533 nm. 170 Gbit/s data amplification was demonstrated with open eye diagrams. Integrated channel waveguide ring lasers were realized with output powers of up to 9.5 µW, slope efficiencies of up to 0.11%, and a threshold power as low as 6.4 mW, with wavelength selection in the range 1530 to 1557 nm. Distributed-phase-shift holographically written surface relief Bragg gratings were integrated via reactive ion etching of SiO2 overlay films and single-mode lasing with a linewidth as low as 1.5 kHz was demonstrated.

Abstract

Al2O3:Er3+ amplifiers with different Er concentrations have been investigated. Up to 2.0 dB/cm net gain has been demonstrated at 1533 nm for an Er concentration of 2 x 10^20 cm^-3 when pumping at 977 nm. Peak total gain of 9.3 dB was also demonstrated in a 5.4-cm amplifier and positive gain was achieved over an 80-nm bandwidth. Using a rate-equation model, up to 33 dB at the peak and >20 dB between 1525-1565 nm is predicted in a 24-cm-long amplifier for a pump power of 100 mW. In Er-doped fiber amplifiers, the long excited-state lifetime means transmission at bit rates around 40 Gbit/s is possible. We recently showed open-eye diagrams and only a small power penalty of 1 dB in bit-error-rate measurements for on-chip 40 Gbit/s signal transmission in an integrated Al2O3:Er3+ amplifier. This result, coupled with the high and broad gain demonstrates that such amplifiers are well-suited to compensating for on-chip losses incurred in high-bit-rate signals. The high gain also indicates that a laser source is possible in a material which can be integrated with passive optical materials such as silicon, providing high functionality on a single chip.

Abstract

The spectroscopic properties of the $Al_2O_3:Er$ layers were investigated by lifetime measurements. Typical Bernoulli-type decay curves were found, with an increasingly fast non-exponential initial component for higher Er concentrations, which results from enery-transfer upconversion between neighbouring Er ions. The exponential tail at long decay times exhibits an asymptotic lifetime which decreases from 7ms for Er concentrations of ~2x$10^{19} cm^{-3}$ down to 2 ms for Er concentrations of ~4x$10^{20} cm^{-3}$. This behavior may result from either pair-induced energy-transfer upconversion or quenching by impurity ions present in the metallic Er target used for sputtering. We conclude that at least two different types of quenching mechanisms are present in the decay.

Accurate measurements of the second-order nonlinearity profile of thermally poled low-loss germanosilicate films grown on fused-silica substrates are reported, of interest as potential electro-optic devices. After optimization, we demonstrate a record high nonlinear coefficient d33 ≈1.6 pm/V, a two-fold improvement over highest reported d33 value in fused silica that we attribute to the presence of germanium. © 2005 Optical Society of America.

Abstract

Reactive ion etching of yttrium oxide thin films was investigated using $CF_{4}/O_{2}, BCl_{3}, HBr$ and $Cl_{2}$ inductively coupled plasmas. For all gas combinations, with the exception of $Cl_{2}$, the etch rate was found to be similar, indicating a primarily physical etch process, enhanced in $Cl_{2}$ by an additional chemical-etching component. The highest observed etch rate was 53 nm/min in $Cl_{2}$, suitable for controlled etching of optical ridge waveguide structures several hundred nm in height. Overall, the surface quality of the etched $Y_{2}O_{3}$ films was the highest after etching in $CF_{4}/O_{2}$ plasmas, indicating a trade-off in etch rate and film quality between the various process gases. Preliminary selectivity measurements show that Ni is a suitable material for etch-masking of high resolution structures in $Y_{2}O_{3}$.

Silicon oxide, silicon nitride and silicon oxynitride layers were grown by a PECVD technique. The resulting refractive indices of the layers varied between 1.47 and 1.93. The compositional properties of the layers were analyzed by FTIR and ATR infrared spectroscopy techniques. Comparative investigation of bonding structures for the three different layers was performed. Special attention was given to analyze N-H bond stretching absorption at 3300-3400 cm(-1). Quantitative results for hydrogen related bonding concentrations are presented based on IR analysis. An annealing study was performed in order to reduce or eliminate this bonding types. For the annealed samples the N-H bond concentration was strongly reduced as verified by FTIR transmittance and ATR spectroscopic methods. A correlation between the N-H concentration and absorption loss was verified for silicon oxynitride slab waveguides. Moreover, a single mode waveguide with silicon oxynitride core layer was fabricated. Abstract

Antigenic variation in malaria was discovered in Plasmodium knowlesi studies involving longitudinal infections of rhesus macaques (M. mulatta). The variant proteins, known as the P. knowlesi Schizont Infected Cell Agglutination (SICA) antigens and the P. falciparum Erythrocyte Membrane Protein 1 (PfEMP1) antigens, expressed by the SICAvar and var multigene families, respectively, have been studied for over 30 years. Expression of the SICA antigens in P. knowlesi requires a splenic component, and specific antibodies are necessary for variant antigen switch events in vivo. Outstanding questions revolve around the role of the spleen and the mechanisms by which the expression of these variant antigen families are regulated. Importantly, the longitudinal dynamics and molecular mechanisms that govern variant antigen expression can be studied with P. knowlesi infection of its mammalian and vector hosts. Synchronous infections can be initiated with established clones and studied at multi-omic levels, with the benefit of computational tools from systems biology that permit the integration of datasets and the design of explanatory, predictive mathematical models. Here we provide an historical account of this topic, while highlighting the potential for maximizing the use of P. knowlesi - macaque model systems and summarizing exciting new progress in this area of research. Abstract

Plasmodium knowlesi has risen in importance as a zoonotic parasite that has been causing regular episodes of malaria throughout South East Asia. The P. knowlesi genome sequence generated in 2008 highlighted and confirmed many similarities and differences in Plasmodium species, including a global view of several multigene families, such as the large SICAvar multigene family encoding the variant antigens known as the schizont-infected cell agglutination proteins. However, repetitive DNA sequences are the bane of any genome project, and this and other Plasmodium genome projects have not been immune to the gaps, rearrangements and other pitfalls created by these genomic features. Today, long-read PacBio and chromatin conformation technologies are overcoming such obstacles. Here, based on the use of these technologies, we present a highly refined de novo P. knowlesi genome sequence of the Pk1(A+) clone. This sequence and annotation, referred to as the 'MaHPIC Pk genome sequence', includes manual annotation of the SICAvar gene family with 136 fulllength members categorized as type I or II. This sequence provides a framework that will permit a better understanding of the SICAvar repertoire, selective pressures acting on this gene family and mechanisms of antigenic variation in this species and other pathogens. Abstract

The aim of this study is to provide geochemical and petrological data to characterize coals and carbonaceous shales of the Tokat Province in terms of both compositional and thermal-maturity parameters. The samples, collected from outcrops, belong to the Pliocene Kemerkaş Formation. Geochemical results are based on total organic carbon content, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and GC, and GC-MS analyses. Generally, there is good agreement between the acquired optical and geochemical data, and between organic and inorganic changes. All parameters indicate low-grade transformation, a consequence of low lithostatic pressure. Abstract

Etching of amorphous Al2O3 and polycrystalline Y2O3 films has been investigated using an inductively coupled reactive ion etch system. The etch behaviour has been studied by applying various common process gases and combinations of these gases, including CF4/O2, BCl3, BCl3/HBr, Cl2, Cl2/Ar and Ar. The observed etch rates of Al2O3 films were much higher than Y2O3 for all process gases except for Ar, indicating a much stronger chemical etching component for the Al2O3 layers. Based on analysis of the film etch rates and an investigation of the selectivity and patterning feasibility of possible mask materials, optimized optical channel-waveguide structures were fabricated in both materials. In Al2O3, channel waveguides were fabricated with BCl3/HBr plasma and using a standard resist mask, while in Y2O3, channel waveguides were fabricated with Ar and using either a resist or a sputter deposited Al2O3 mask layer. The etched structures in both materials exhibit straight sidewalls with minimal roughness and sufficient etch depths (up to 530 nm for Al2O3 and 250 nm for Y2O3) for defining waveguides with strong optical confinement. Using the developed etch processes, low additional optical propagation losses (on the order of 0.1 dB/cm) were demonstrated in single-mode ridge waveguides in both Al2O3 and Y2O3 layers at 1550 nm. Abstract

Abstract: The current density in the fuel cell is the direct consequence of reactions taking place over the active surface area. Thus, measurement of its distribution will lead to identification of the location and nature of reactions and will give opportunity to improve the overall efficiency of fuel cells. Within this study, the current density distribution in a direct methanol fuel cell was analyzed by segmenting the current collector into nine sections.
