Pay to publish and open access have been studied extensively, but less so in disciplines such as philosophy and ethics. This study examines the habits and perceptions of researchers from these two fields in Spain. The study draws on data from a survey (completed by 201 out of 541 researchers), a public debate with 26 researchers, and 14 in‐depth interviews. Our results offer some interesting insights into the criteria researchers apply when selecting publishers and journals, notably the value they place on the absence of publication fees. However, habits differ for publishing an article or a book, since payment to publish books is more widespread. The study finds contrasting views on the market for publishing books and journals: some respondents perceived what they consider to be the commercialisation of publishing in academic journals, while others provide arguments to support the Spanish book industry. Sceptical views were also voiced on pay to publish as a funding model. Finally, the study finds broad agreement among the researchers surveyed that publicly funded research should be free to read. The article focuses on the court, theater and community of Spain, discussing its history in the late fifteenth century. Ramón Gómez de la Serna's writing has long been associated with experimental avant-garde innovation in Spain. In this article I examine the critically neglected piece of poetic prose entitled El alba, which was originally written in 1909 when the author was living in Paris, but which was heavily re-edited in 1923. Part of the article traces the influences that come to bear on this piece of experimental prose, but at the same time examines the way in which modernist literature encapsulated many of the processes that were later theorised by philosophers and cultural theorists in the 1960s and 1970s (with special attention to Deleuze and Guattari and to Barthes). The article draws on aspects of their theoretical work, and (following Stephen Ross's work) argues that modernism and theory need to be understood in conjunction with each other. The classical rationalist philosophical tradition in Arabic reached its culmination in the writings of the twelfth-century Andalusian Averroes whose translated commentaries on Aristotle conveyed to the Latin West a rationalist approach which significantly challenged and affected theological and philosophical thinking in that Christian context. That methodology is shown at work in his Fasl al-Maqāl or Book of the Distinction of Discourse and the Establishment of the Relation of Religious Law and Philosophy (c. 1280), although the deeply philosophical character of his subtle arguments has gone largely unappreciated. Here the philosophical foundations for his reasoning are exposed to reveal key elements of his rationalism. That approach is confirmed in his assertion in his later Long Commentary on the Metaphysics (c. 1290) that the highest worship of God is to be found first and foremost in the philosophical science of metaphysics rather than in the rituals of religion. This article analyses the recovery of the historical memory of the Spanish Civil War in the last decade, after so many years of silence, forgetfulness and oblivion. Four points are developed: first, how this recovery is achieved by the civil society in general and by the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory in particular. Secondly, there is a brief allusion to the quarrel between historians and philosophers about the place of memory and remembrance for the construction of the history of Spain. Thirdly, a reference to the recent Historical Memory Law is made, and finally there is a point about the important role played by literature in recovering the memory of many painful facts of the Civil War and Franco?s dictatorship from the point of view of the victims. This article examines the controversial fashion of veiling in the early modern Spanish world. Working across the media of art, literature, and the law, it explores the intersecting ways in which moralists, legislators, playwrights, painters, and poets constructed the figure of the veiled lady ("tapada") as a social type at once alluring and deeply unsettling. We provide an explanation of the terminology and taxonomy of veiling, with illustrations to show the various styles of face-covering popular in early modern Spain. We then argue that this fashion and the controversy—as well as the entertainment—it generated were closely tied to Spain's rise as an imperial power, especially to the new forms of urbanism that developed in the ancient city of Seville and the much younger capitals of Madrid and Lima. As these rapidly expanding cities offered their inhabitants new spaces of social interaction and new possibilities for social mobility, wealth, and consumerism, their changing urban landscapes and complex demographics also generated anxieties of failure and deception. Cultural concerns regarding religious practice, the regulation of domestic and public space, and racial and class distinctions coalesced around the figure of the "tapada." Seductive, mysterious, and rebellious, she absorbed the fantasies and fears of urban life in three of the most dynamic cities of imperial Spain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the diffusion and influence of the philosophical works of Boethius on the Spanish literature during the medieval period. It is noted that his works are unknown in the country until the reconquest of Christian territories after the Arab invasion and breakdown of Visigothic culture. Translations of his works were available in Castile and Catalonia-Aragon in the thirteenth century, and were supported for humanistic culture in the fifteenth century. It states that Dominican professor Antoni Ginebrada has adapted another translation and revised text at the request of Bernat Joan of Valencia.

The article discusses the attempt to win recognition for "New Philosophy" in the 18th century in Spain. The philosophy describes a set of views on scientific method and a set of intellectual, and on occasions social and political, attitudes implicit in the holding of such views associated with the philosophy of Rene Descartes. According to the author, the systems of Pierre Gassendi and Descartes do not resemble truth so much as that of Aristotle, but it only function on voluntary principles and unconvincing conclusions. Therefore, it was a judgment on the intellectual life of the nation.
