The article discusses the study conducted by a team of researchers led by John Brigande, a developmental neurobiologist at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon, on the significance of genes control in hearing development. The study revealed that in mouse embryos in utero, transferring the Atoh1 gene, a transcription factor, into cells that will become the cochlea creates additional working hair cells that form connections with nerve cells.

Risk analysis (including resilience analysis) of infrastructure requires models that describe the connection of components and subsequent flow dynamics. However, the detailed information needed to define these models may not be available, especially for small‐scale infrastructure that connect to every building. In this paper, we generate location‐specific small‐scale networks using detailed data that should always be available. We propose a general framework where we generate the network topology, we estimate the resource demand at each building, and we design the network components to meet the demands. This general framework is applicable to all types of infrastructure, but many procedures are specific to the type of network being generated. This paper develops the necessary procedures to generate sewer networks and illustrates the usage for an example network in a small study area in Seaside, Oregon. It seems probable that some form of medically-assisted dying will become legal in England and Wales in the foreseeable future. Assisted dying Bills are at various stages of preparation in surrounding jurisdictions (Scotland, Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey), and activists campaign unceasingly for a change in the law in England and Wales. There is generally uncritical supportive media coverage, and individual autonomy is seen as the unassailable trump card: 'my life, my death'. However, devising a law which is 'fit for purpose' is not an easy matter. The challenge is to achieve an appropriate balance between compassion and patient autonomy on the one hand, and respect for human life generally and medical autonomy on the other. More people should benefit from a change in the law than be harmed. In relation to medically-assisted dying, this may not be possible. Protecting the vulnerable is a key issue. Likewise, not impacting negatively on societal attitudes towards the disabled and frail elderly, particularly those with dementia. This paper compares three existing models of physician-assisted suicide: Switzerland, Oregon (USA), and Victoria (Australia). Vulnerability and autonomy are discussed, and concern expressed about the biased nature of much of the advocacy for assisted dying, tantamount to disinformation. A 'hidden' danger of assisted dying is noted, namely, increased suffering as more patients decline referral to palliative-hospice care because they fear they will be 'drugged to death'. Finally, suggestions are made for a possible 'least worse' way forward. One solution would seem to be for physician-assisted suicide to be the responsibility of a stand-alone Department for Assisted Dying overseen by lawyers or judges and operated by technicians. Doctors would be required only to confirm a patient's medical eligibility. Palliative-hospice care should definitely not be involved, and healthcare professionals must have an inviolable right to opt out of involvement. The research presented in this paper examines a new proposed approach for identifying safety improvement sites on rural highways. Unlike conventional approaches, the proposed approach does not require crash history, but rather utilizes classified variables for traffic volume, geometric features, and roadside characteristics that do not require access to exact data or extensive technical expertise. The research validates the performance of the proposed approach using field data from a large sample of rural two-lane highway segments in the state of Oregon including traffic, roadway, and crash data. A mathematical model for the prediction of the EB expected number of crashes using multivariate regression analysis is developed and used as the network screening criterion. The model's independent variables include roadway geometry, roadside characteristics, and traffic exposure, while the dependent variable is the EB expected number of crashes. Using observed crash history as a reference, the performance of the proposed approach was compared to two of the well-established methods in practice, namely, the Empirical Bayes (EB) and the potential for safety improvement (PSI) methods. The study results suggest that by using crash density for highway segments, the performance of the proposed method was lower than that of the EB and PSI methods. This is despite the high R-square value of the predictive model used in the proposed method. However, when using crash frequencies for highway segments, the performance of the proposed method was found comparable to the well-established EB and PSI methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a new coupled urban change and hazard consequence model that considers population growth, a changing built environment, natural hazard mitigation planning, and future acute hazards. Urban change is simulated as an agent‐based land market with six agent types and six land use types. Agents compete for parcels with successful bids leading to changes in both urban land use—affecting where agents are located—and structural properties of buildings—affecting the building's ability to resist damage to natural hazards. IN‐CORE, an open‐source community resilience model, is used to compute damages to the built environment. The coupled model operates under constraints imposed by planning policies defined at the start of a simulation. The model is applied to Seaside, Oregon, a coastal community in the North American Pacific Northwest subject to seismic‐tsunami hazards emanating from the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Ten planning scenarios are considered including caps on the number of vacation homes, relocating community assets, limiting new development, and mandatory seismic retrofits. By applying this coupled model to the testbed community, we show that: (a) placing a cap on the number of vacation homes results in more visitors in damaged buildings, (b) that mandatory seismic retrofits do not reduce the number of people in damaged buildings when considering population growth, (c) polices diverge beyond year 10 in the model, indicating that many policies take time to realize their implications, and (d) the most effective policies were those that incorporated elements of both urban planning and enforced building codes. Plain Language Summary: Natural hazards negatively impact communities resulting in significant infrastructure damages. Natural hazard mitigation planning attempts to reduce these damages and modeling can be used to measure how effective different mitigation plans can be. A new modeling framework is presented that accounts for population growth, a changing built environment, natural hazard mitigation planning, and future hazards. The model is applied to a testbed community with a large tourist population that is exposed to earthquake and tsunami hazards. Using this model, we consider different combinations of policies such as limiting the number of vacation homes in the community, relocating community assets, limiting new development, and enforcing building codes. Interestingly, we show that while placing a cap on the number of vacation homes does free up housing for full time residents, this also results in more visitors in damaged buildings. It is also shown how even with building codes in place, population growth contributes to an increased number of people in damaged buildings. Lastly, we show how the most effective policies incorporate elements of both urban planning and building codes. Although Hubbs' beaked whale (Mesoplodon carlhubbsi) was previously known from over 60 strandings on both sides of the North Pacific, it had been identified alive in the wild only once, off Oregon in 1994. In September 2021, we conducted a search effort for beaked whales off the coast of Oregon using a towed hydrophone array and a visual search team. Approximately 350 km off the Columbia River mouth, we detected the vocalizations of an unidentified mesoplodont whale; we stopped our vessel and waited in the area until two unidentified juvenile Mesoplodon surfaced and stayed near our vessel for almost 2 hr. During that time, we took numerous photographs and videos, made behavioral observations, and recorded their vocalizations. The DNA sequence from a biopsy sample identified them as M. carlhubbsi. In this paper, we discuss our biological observations, including color patterning and acquired markings, behavioral observations, and describe for the first time the acoustic characteristics of this species. We confirm that M. carlhubbsi is the source of a previously unidentified acoustic signal known as BW37V, and we update what is known about the at‐sea distribution of this species based on previous recordings and observational records. Doppler-lidar wind-profile measurements at three sites were used to evaluate NWP model errors from two versions of NOAA's 3-km-grid HRRR model, to see whether updates in the latest version 4 reduced errors when compared against the original version 1. Nested (750-m grid) versions of each were also tested to see how grid spacing affected forecast skill. The measurements were part of the field phase of the Second Wind Forecasting Improvement Project (WFIP2), an 18-month deployment into central Oregon–Washington, a major wind-energy-producing region. This study focuses on errors in simulating marine intrusions, a summertime, 600–800-m-deep, regional sea-breeze flow found to generate large errors. HRRR errors proved to be complex and site dependent. The most prominent error resulted from a premature drop in modeled marine-intrusion wind speeds after local midnight, when lidar-measured winds of greater than 8 m s−1 persisted through the next morning. These large negative errors were offset at low levels by positive errors due to excessive mixing, complicating the interpretation of model "improvement," such that the updates to the full-scale versions produced mixed results, sometimes enhancing but sometimes degrading model skill. Nesting consistently improved model performance, with version 1's nest producing the smallest errors overall. HRRR's ability to represent the stages of sea-breeze forcing was evaluated using radiation budget, surface-energy balance, and near-surface temperature measurements available during WFIP2. The significant site-to-site differences in model error and the complex nature of these errors mean that field-measurement campaigns having dense arrays of profiling sensors are necessary to properly diagnose and characterize model errors, as part of a systematic approach to NWP model improvement. Significance Statement: Dramatic increases in NWP model skill will be required over the coming decades. This paper describes the role of major deployments of accurate profiling sensors in achieving that goal and presents an example from the Second Wind Forecast Improvement Program (WFIP2). Wind-profile data from scanning Doppler lidars were used to evaluate two versions of HRRR, the original and an updated version, and nested versions of each. This study focuses on the ability of updated HRRR versions to improve upon predicting a regional sea-breeze flow, which was found to generate large errors by the original HRRR. The research aims to identify new landscape indicators assessing the physical characteristics and structure of the "slow cities" identified by the Slow City (Cittaslow) Movement. The movement currently includes about 300 (297 in 2023) cities from all around the world, and agrees to work on a set of goals/criteria. Although these criteria mostly highlight the unique values of the cities, they are not enough to provide an accurate evaluation of the space/land. This situation puts slow cities, once they receive the designation, in a redundant position to compete with large cities in terms of their recognition, and tourism potential, and as a result of this it poses a threat to the cities' original values. The paper proposes new criteria based on landscape indicators (critical parameters to evaluate the physical conditions of the landscape) to assess the spatial characteristics of nominated cities in Turkey, using comprehensive surveys. The surveys were conducted both in Turkey and the US states of Washington and Oregon, with samples of expert studies in the spatial planning area. According to the surveys' strengths in the statistical power test, the index value of landscape indicators was determined, when the relevant landscape indicators were reviewed. Evaluation of tsunami disaster risk for a coastal region requires reliable estimation of tsunami hazard, for example, wave amplitude close to the shore. Observed tsunami data are scarce and have poor spatial coverage, and for this reason probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis (PTHA) traditionally relies on numerical simulation of "synthetic" tsunami generation and propagation toward the coast. Such an approach has been extensively studied in the past and it is widely recognized as an important disaster‐risk mitigation tool. PTHA can not only provide less uncertain and spatially coherent hazard estimates in comparison with classical empirical data analysis which is restricted at the tide gauge stations, but also local inundation information. In this paper, we explore a purely statistical alternative to traditional PTHA for evaluation of tsunami amplitude hazard. Here, we use tide gauge measurements of tsunami amplitude along the western United States, specifically California and Oregon, and develop a spatial Bayesian hierarchical model (BHM) to assess tsunami hazard from far‐field earthquake sources at various recurrence intervals. The configuration of our model incorporates latent Gaussian fields that utilize information on the distance between tide gauges as well as on the continental shelf width, that is, a covariate linked to potential dissipative effects on wave energy as the tsunami travels over shallow water. Through our BHM, we produce spatially continuous probabilistic maps of far‐field tsunami hazard which can aid comprehensive tsunami disaster risk reduction and management. Plain Language Summary: Devastating tsunamis are rare, but their consequences can be destructive for people who live close to the coast and their livelihoods. Assessing tsunami hazard, for example, nearshore tsunami height, typically requires us to resort to physics‐based models since historical data from individual monitoring stations are scarce. In this work, we develop a spatial statistical model which can pool empirical amplitude data and capture dependence between tide gauges to allow for a more robust tsunami hazard analysis than analyzing station data in isolation. Our model can serve as a reliable benchmark and supplement to traditional probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis. Clinical pharmacists are an untapped resource in the fight against health disparities. As frontline workers, they are embedded in communities and interact on a regular basis with patients managing chronic conditions. In particular, managed care clinical pharmacists have access to population‐wide data to identify gaps and mobilize resources to proactively address disparities across their community. Amid the current pandemic, there have been vast inequities regarding access to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) vaccine, particularly for low income and underserved culturally specific populations. The pandemic has provided a case study for how clinical pharmacists can collaborate across managed care and community‐based settings to work toward achieving health equity. Recent data indicates that culturally specific populations have received less COVID‐19 vaccines than the White population. To address this inequity, a team of clinical pharmacists at CareOregon, a health plan in Oregon that serves Medicaid, collaborated with retail pharmacists from both chain and independent pharmacies to improve COVID‐19 vaccination rates for this unique population. This paper describes the process and strategies implemented to ensure vaccine access for culturally specific populations enrolled with CareOregon. Strategies to expand vaccine access to this population involved data sharing with community pharmacists, direct scheduling of culturally specific members for vaccine appointments and partnering with other stakeholders such as community‐based organizations (CBOs) to provide COVID‐19 vaccine confidence training. This paper also highlights the impact of the strategies to improve COVID‐19 vaccination rates for this population. The Eleventh ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Functional Programming (ICFP 2006) took place on September 18–20, 2006 in Portland, Oregon. ICFP 2006 provides a forum for researchers and developers to hear about the latest work on the design, implementation, principles, and uses of functional programming. The conference covers the entire spectrum of work, from theory to practice, and beyond. There were 74 submissions, of which the program committee selected 24 for presentation at the conference. Following the conference, the program committee selected eight papers for which the authors were invited to submit extended versions for this special issue of JFP. The seven papers that appear in this volume were reviewed, revised, and accepted following standard JFP procedures. These papers cover a wide range of topics related to functional programming, including programming, program verification, language design, language development, program transformation, and program analysis. Medical aid in dying refers to policies that allow terminally ill patients to seek assistance from their medical providers to obtain medications to hasten death. In this paper, we used a 7-point policy analysis model to examine the diversity of medical aid in dying policies that exist in jurisdictions (states and territories) in the U.S. and the implications of these policies for suffering at end of life. As of this writing, these practices are available in 12 jurisdictions, including 11 states and the District of Columbia. Legalization has occurred via statutory approaches in 10 jurisdictions and permissive approaches in two jurisdictions. We discuss the structures of these laws, the requirements for participation, and the limitations created by having jurisdiction-specific policies on such broad, bioethical issues. Existing laws appear to relieve suffering in patients at end of life. Jurisdictional differences create barriers to comprehensive expansion but provide insights into practice in different contexts. Tolerance for wildlife can be informed by a person's beliefs, attitudes, norms, or other characteristics. Although theoretical papers emphasize the interrelations of these multiple antecedents of wildlife tolerance, empirical studies have not tested them using a rigorous scale development process. We used psychometrics to characterize the cognitive antecedents of tolerance toward black bears (Ursus americanus). Proposed scale items were tested via web-hosted questionnaire (n = 240) and refined into 29 items representing five antecedent dimensions of tolerance for black bears. We then administered these items to a different sample of recreational trail users in western Oregon (n = 210). Second-order confirmatory factor analysis confirmed a 19-item measure representing four distinct yet related antecedent dimensions of tolerance: antipathy, connection, lethal control (damage), and lethal control (danger to self, pets, and economics). These dimensions help better explain why people may be more or less tolerant toward black bears and, potentially, other wildlife. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected communities of color, including Latinx communities. Oregon Saludable: Juntos Podemos (OSJP) is a randomized clinical trial aimed at reducing this disparity by both increasing access to testing for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, for Oregon Latinx community members and studying the effectiveness of health and behavioral health interventions on turnout and health outcomes. OSJP established SARS-CoV-2 testing events at sites across Oregon. A critical early question was how to locate these sites to best serve Latinx community members. To propose sites in each participating county, we implemented an algorithmic approach solving a facilities location problem. This algorithm was based on minimizing driving time from Latinx population centers to SARS-CoV-2 testing locations. OSJP staff presented these proposed testing locations to community partners as a starting place for identifying final testing sites. Due to differences in geography, population distributions, and potential site accessibility, the study sites exhibited variation in how well the algorithmic optimization objectives could be satisfied. From this variation, we inferred the effects of the drive time optimization metric on the likelihood of Latinx community members utilizing SARS-CoV-2 testing services. After controlling for potential confounders, we found that minimizing the drive time optimization metric was strongly correlated with increased turnout among Latinx community members. This paper presents the algorithm and data sources used for site proposals and discusses challenges and opportunities for community-based health promotion research when translating algorithm proposals into action across a range of health outcomes. Craft food and beverage makers regularly emphasize transparency about the ethical, sustainable sourcing of their ingredients and the human labour underpinning their production, all of which helps elevate the status of their products and occupational communities. Yet, as with other niche ethical consumption markets, craft industries continue to rely on employment conditions for agricultural workers that reproduce inequalities of race, class, and citizenship in the dominant food system. This paper interrogates the contradiction between the exaltation of craft cidermakers' labour and the devaluation of farmworker labour by assessing how craft beverage actors make sense of inequalities facing manually skilled agricultural workers. Through a focus on the emerging craft cider industry, this paper draws on in-depth interviews and ethnographic data with a range of urban and rural cider actors in the Pacific Northwest (British Columbia, Oregon, and Washington State). I find that actors in the craft cider industry engage with inequalities affecting farmworkers through three main patterns: (1) Justifications of the status quo; (2) Supply chain fog; and (3) Misgiving/critique. By using an analytical framework that integrates critical agrarianism and the politics of sight, this study provides insights into both barriers and opportunities to redistribute social recognition and material rewards across food supply chains. The Klamath Mountains Province of Northern California and southern Oregon, USA, consists of generally east-dipping terranes assembled via Paleozoic to Mesozoic subduction along the western margin of North America. The Klamath Mountains Province more than doubled in mass from Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous time, due to alternating episodes of extension (e.g., rifting and formation of the Josephine ophiolite) and shortening (e.g., Siskiyou and Nevadan events). However, the tectonic mechanisms driving this profound Mesozoic growth of the Klamath Mountains Province are poorly understood. In this paper, we show that formation of the Condrey Mountain schist (CMS) of the central Klamath Mountains Province spanned this critical time period and use the archive contained within the CMS as a key to deciphering the Mesozoic tectonics of the Klamath Mountains Province. Igneous samples from the outer CMS subunit yield U-Pb zircon ages of ca. 175–170 Ma, which reflect volcanic protolith eruptive timing. One detrital sample from the same subunit contains abundant (~54% of zircon grains analyzed) Middle Jurassic ages with Paleozoic and Proterozoic grains comprising the remainder and yields a maximum depositional age (MDA) of ca. 170 Ma. These ages, in the context of lithologic and thermochronologic relations, suggest that outer CMS protoliths accumulated in an outboard rift basin and subsequently underthrust the Klamath Mountains Province during the Late Jurassic Nevadan orogeny. Five samples of the chiefly metasedimentary inner CMS yield MDAs ranging from 160 Ma to 130 Ma, with younger ages corresponding to deeper structural levels. Such inverted age zonation is common in subduction complexes and, considering existing K-Ar ages, suggests that the inner CMS was assembled by progressive underplating over a >10 m.y. timespan. Despite this age zonation, age spectra derived from structurally shallow and deep portions of the inner CMS closely overlap those derived from the oldest section of the Franciscan subduction complex (South Fork Mountain schist). These relations suggest that the inner CMS is a composite of South Fork Mountain schist slices that were sequentially underplated beneath the Klamath Mountains Province. The age, inboard position, and structural position (i.e., the CMS resides directly beneath Jurassic arc assemblages with no intervening mantle) of the CMS suggest that these rocks were emplaced during one or more previously unrecognized episodes of shallow-angle subduction restricted to the Klamath Mountains Province. Furthermore, emplacement of the deepest portions of the CMS corresponds with the ca. 136 Ma termination of magmatism in the Klamath Mountains Province, which we relate to the disruption of asthenospheric flow during slab shallowing. The timing of shallow-angle subduction shortly precedes that of the westward translation of the Klamath Mountains Province relative to correlative rocks in the northern Sierra Nevada Range, which suggests that subduction dynamics were responsible for relocating the Klamath Mountains Province from the arc to the forearc. In aggregate, the above relations require at least three distinct phases of extension and/or rifting, each followed by an episode of shallow-angle underthrusting. This paper examines the processes by which "stakeholder" status is constructed, and the importance of sense of place to that construction in collaborative water resource governance processes. Water management often involves collaborative governance, but there can be differences between who has an interest in the outcome, and who is formally invited to participate as a "stakeholder." We examine a case study of a collaborative water governance process in Central Oregon, and found that existing models of stakeholder formation present in scholarly literature did not fully explain the dynamics of stakeholder participation. We propose a two-step "Interest-Participation" model of stakeholder formation: to be considered stakeholders, a group must not only have an interest in the outcome but must actively navigate barriers to participation. We moreover argue that collaborative engagement is an embodiment of sense of place, emphasizing the importance of competing place meanings in resource governance processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Concentration‐discharge (C‐Q) relationships of total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), particulate organic carbon (POC), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were investigated in the tributaries and main‐stems of two mountainous river systems with distinct watershed characteristics (Eel and Umpqua rivers) in Northern California and central Oregon (USA). Power‐law (C = a × Qb) fits to the data showed strong transport‐limited behavior (b > 1) by TSS and POC, moderate transport limitation of DOC (b > 0.3) and chemostatic behavior (b < 0) by TDS in most streams. These contrasts led to significant compositional differences at varying discharge levels, with particle‐bound constituents becoming increasingly important (relative abundances of 50% to >90%) at high‐flow conditions. Organic carbon contents of TSS displayed marked decreases with discharge whereas they increased in TDS during high‐flow conditions. Daily and cumulative material fluxes for different coastal streams were calculated using the C‐Q relationships and showed that the delivery of transport‐limited constituents, such as TSS and POC (and DOC to a lesser degree), was closely tied to high‐discharge events and occurred primarily during the winter season. The coherence between winter fluxes and high wave‐southerly wind conditions along the coast highlights how seasonal and inter‐annual differences in fluvial discharge patterns affect the fate of land‐derived materials delivered to coastal regions. Simple Summary: Brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is an invasive pest species that causes significant economic damage to many crops. One of the crucial aspects of management strategies rely on understanding the biology and life-table parameters of H. halys. Here, we described the temperature dependent life-table parameters of H. halys from New Jersey and Oregon. In addition, comparison with previous data was performed to provide up-to-date information. Altogether, the current data and previous reports were employed to determine developmental thresholds and estimates of optimal temperatures for H. halys population development. Brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is a generalist pest that causes serious injury to a variety of crops around the world. After the first detection in the USA, H. halys became a serious threat to growers resulting in significant crop damage. Understanding the effect of temperature on H. halys development will help to achieve successful control by predicting the phenological timing of the pest. Here, life table parameters (survival, development, reproduction, and daily mortality) of H. halys were evaluated for New Jersey and Oregon populations in the US. Parameters were determined from field-collected and laboratory-reared individuals. The results indicated that New Jersey populations had higher levels of egg-laying than Oregon populations and exhibited higher and earlier fecundity peaks. Survival levels were similar between populations. Linear and nonlinear fit were used to estimate the minimum (14.3 °C), optimal (27.8 °C), and maximum (35.9 °C) temperatures where development of H. halys can take place. An age-specific fecundity peak (Mx = 36.63) was recorded at 936 degree days for New Jersey populations, while maximum fecundity (Mx = 11.85) occurred at 1145 degree days in Oregon. No oviposition was recorded at the lowest (15 °C) or highest (35 °C) trialed temperatures. Developmental periods increased at temperatures above 30 °C, indicating that such higher temperatures are suboptimal for H. halys development. Altogether the most optimal temperatures for population increase (rm) ranged from 25 to 30 °C. Survival rates of H. halys at suboptimal low temperatures of 8 °C (i.e., 61%) is comparable to previous reports. The present paper provides additional data and context from a range of experimental conditions and populations. Axial Seamount is a seafloor volcano with frequent eruptions and periodic cycles of inflation and deflation. Seafloor pressure gauges monitor vertical deformation with time, but inherent instrumental drift complicates and biases geodetic interpretation. A drift corrected pressure recorder was deployed on Axial Seamount on 6 July 2018, at coordinates 45° 57.29′ North latitude, −130° 0.56′ East longitude, depth 1,535 m. This system includes two independent quartz‐resonant pressure gauges, which nearly continuously observe the seafloor pressure. At regular intervals, the gauges are calibrated in situ with a modified deadweight tester at a pressure within 98% of the nominal seafloor pressure. Using the calibration data, the drift of each gauge has been modeled as a simple linear plus decaying exponential function of time. The two estimated linear sensor drift rates are 0.45 ± 0.12 and 0.36 ± 0.08 kPa/year; the modeled sensor drift represents a significant error if uncorrected. The standard deviations of the drift model residuals are of order 0.06 kPa or 6 mm depth equivalent. Once calibrated, the difference between the two seafloor pressure timeseries exhibits a RMS deviation of ±6 mm at the 90% confidence limit and a linear trend less than 1 mm/year. A time series from July 2018 to December 2021 tracks the inflation of Axial Seamount with differing inflation rates over different time intervals. One approach is to use pressure gauges to monitor changes in seafloor depth, but unavoidable gauge drift complicates the interpretation. Farm. Farming, the rural landscape, and food serve as powerful symbols in most cultures, and images of these are widely represented in visual media. Using visual data raises epistemological and practical issues in data acquisition and modes of presentation. We encourage people to address the ways in which food and agriculture have been visually represented, and to use the new digital technologies to amplify our understanding of this subject matter.

This article examines the strategies Beatrice Morrow Cannady used to persuade people to subscribe for, and renew their subscriptions to, The Advocate, a newspaper for African Americans published in Portland, Oregon, from 1903 until 1936. It also considers her efforts to collect past-due accounts, promote advertisers, and encourage collective action to ensure her paper's success. Although scholars who study the black press agree that finances were a problem for most publishers, few have considered how the stress of worrying about a publication's bottom line might have affected an editor's ability to advocate for equal rights and liberties in her or his community. Yet Cannady's distress is apparent in correspondence to NAACP officials and editorials in her newspaper. Examining her efforts to keep her newspaper afloat may offer a framework for studying other African American papers both small and large and perhaps lead to more nuanced discussions of the similarities—or differences—discovered in regional publications. Nowadays, electronic circuits' time to market is essential, with engineers trying to reduce it as much as possible. Due to this, simulation has become the main testing concept used in the electronics domain. In order to perform the simulation of a circuit, a behavioral model must be created. Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) are semiconductor devices found in a multitude of electronic circuits, and they are also used as power switches in many applications, such as low-dropout linear voltage regulators, switching regulators, gate drivers, battery management systems, etc. A MOSFETs' behavior is extremely complex to model, thus, creating high-performance models for these transistors is an imperative condition in order to emulate the exact real behavior of a circuit using them. An essential parameter of MOSFET power switches is the ON-state resistance (RDSON), because it determines the power losses during the ON state. Ideally, the power losses need to be zero. RDSON depends on multiple factors, such as temperature, load current, and gate-to-source voltage. Previous studies in this domain focus on the modeling of the MOSFET only in specific operating points, but do not cover the entire variation range of the parameters, which is critical for some applications. For this reason, in this paper, there was introduced for the first time a novel ON-state resistance modeling technique for MOSFET Power Switches, which solves the entire RDSON dependency on the transistor's variables stated above. The novel RDSON modeling technique is based on modulating the transistor's gate-to-source voltage such that the exact RDSON value is obtained in each possible operating point. The method was tested as a real-life example by creating a behavioral model for an N-channel MOSFET transistor and the chosen simulation environment was Oregon, USA, Computer-Aided Design (OrCAD) capture. The results show that the model is able to match the transistor's RDSON characteristics with a maximum error of 0.8%. This is extremely important for applications in which the temperatures, voltages, and currents vary over a wide range. The new proposed modeling method covers a gap in the behavioral modeling domain, due to the fact that, until now, it was not possible to model the RDSON characteristics in all operating corners. The existing Scoggins Dam and reservoir are in Washington County, Oregon, and the title is held by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation). Reclamation has previously identified dam safety concerns related to the existing embankment dam. Regional project sponsors, including Clean Water Services, have identified the need for expanded storage capacity in the reservoir to meet growing water demands and address water quality issues in the Tualatin River downstream of the dam. As part of efforts to resolve dam safety issues and increase the water storage in the reservoir, a comprehensive feasibility level design of a new 185-foot-high Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dam. Extraordinary seismic hazards have been identified in the region associated with the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ). Further, any dam alternative carried forward for funding, final design, and construction will have to meet the Public Protection Guidelines (PPG) of Reclamation that require a formal quantitative risk analysis. A risk-informed design approach was adopted to configure the layout and cross-section properties of the dam. A multi-phase site characterization program and preliminary RCC mix design program were performed to support the design. In addition, models were developed, and an extensive suite of both (two-dimensional) 2D and (three-dimensional) 3D structural analyses were performed for seismic loadings with total durations of over 200 s, strong shaking of over 140 s, and peak ground accelerations of over 2 gravitational accelerations (g) (up to 50,000-year return period event). This paper describes the feasibility design configuration of the dam, including the seismic hazard characterization, structural analysis models, and seismic response modeling results. Climate change and exurban development pose challenges for water resources. This paper examines the perceptions and adaptive responses to those stressors among stakeholders engaging in exurban water management. Drawing on 42 interviews with planners, water managers, and local experts, we analyze perspectives on water-related hazards in the Hood River watershed, Oregon, and identify contrasting approaches to adaptation. Interview subjects identified climate-related hazards as most significant, with relatively less – although not insignificant – concern about development. Interviewees understood the role of the Watershed Group in four different ways: resistance to change, sustaining the present system, adapting to improve resilience, or transformational adaptation. Despite tensions between these approaches, the Watershed Group empowers local actors, offering grounds for social development. This study indicates that exurban areas may be poised to experiment and develop methods of collaborative resource management that reconcile different interests toward transformational adaptations to the dual challenges of climate change and urbanization. Although farmers markets are often described in relatively homogenizing terms, there is nonetheless significant diversity in their form and function, and that diversity remains underexamined within the academic literature. Drawing on document analysis of a novel dataset of Oregon farmers market organization's vendor rules and regulations, this paper challenges commonly-held assumptions about the values often assumed to be inherent to alternative food networks and embedded forms of exchange. In examining the stated mission, values, and goals of farmers market organizations, this study found that geographic proximity, economic, and community-oriented values and goals predominated. Farmers market organizations showed comparatively less focus on values such as equity, health, and sustainability. These findings are surprising, given how frequently farmers markets are equated with ethical and sustainable consumption. Additionally, this paper presents empirically-driven findings related to how farmers market organizations define and codify the parameters of local vendors, local food, and direct-to-consumer sales, and how markets use standards and regulations to advance a vision of 'good food' that centers on quality, authenticity, scale of production, health, sustainability, and ethics. • Analysis of a novel dataset of 87 farmers market organization's regulatory documents. • Markets show substantial heterogeneity in their form, function, and regulations. • Strategic rules and regulations are used to define the marketplace. • Farmers markets emphasize geographic proximity, economic, and community goals. • Fewer markets prioritize sustainability, equity, health, and educational goals. Background: Efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of wildfire smoke have focused on modifying human behaviour to minimise individual exposure, largely accomplished by providing smoke forecasts, monitoring, and consistent public messaging. Aims: To identify a strategy to reduce the amount of wildfire smoke in frequently impacted communities. Methods: We identify frequent air pathways that transport smoke into five communities in south-western Oregon. We present a case study comparing the potential change in the 24-h average PM2.5 concentration between fuels burned during a wildfire which are and are not treated prior to the incident. Key results: The concentration of PM2.5 would have decreased by 41% if fuel treatments occurred just prior to the wildfire. Of six vegetative strata, canopy, wood, and ground fuels contributed 88% of the total PM2.5 emissions, with shrub, herb, and lichen/litter/moss strata comprising the remaining 12%. Conclusions: Fuel treatments can substantially reduce smoke emission from subsequent wildfires and if located in consideration of meteorological patterns, these fuel treatments can reduce ambient concentrations of PM2.5. Implications: Fire and land managers can use the frequent air pathways and focus fuel treatments on the fuel beds and vegetative strata with the greatest potential to emit smoke during wildfires, to reduce the duration and concentration of wildfire smoke in frequently impacted communities. This paper deals with detection and temperature analysis and of wildfires using PRISMA imagery. Precursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa (Hyperspectral Precursor of the Application Mission, PRISMA) is a new hyperspectral mission by ASI (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, Italian Space Agency) launched in 2019. This mission provides hyperspectral images with a spectral range of 400–2,500 nm and an average spectral resolution less than 12 nm and a spatial resolution of 30 m/pixel. This study focuses on the wildfire temperature estimation over the Bootleg Fire, US 2021. The analysis starts by considering the Hyperspectral Fire Detection Index (HFDI) which is used to analyze the informative content of the images, along with the analysis of some specific visible, near‐infrared and shortwave‐infrared bands. This first analysis is used as input to perform a temperature estimation of the areas with active wildfire. Surface temperature is retrieved using PRISMA radiance and a linear mixing model based on two background components (vegetation and burn scar) and two active fire components. PRISMA temperatures are compared with LST (Land Surface Temperature) products from NASA's ECOSTRESS and Landsat 8 which imaged the Bootleg Fire before and after PRISMA. A critical discussion of the results obtained with PRISMA is presented, followed by the advantages and limitation of the proposed approach. To confirm the results of our approach, we also compare the outcomes to the data provided by two other satellite missions: ECOSTRESS (ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment) and Landsat 8. Hence, a critical discussion of the results obtained with PRISMA is presented in order to report advantages and limitation of the proposed approach. Promoting accessibility and expanding transportation options are at the center of many livability programs. Using the 2017 Oregon Livability Survey administered in three regions in Oregon, this paper studies the livability impacts of accessibility and transportation options in the broader context of residential preferences and choices. Findings show that residents valued accessibility and transportation options in both livability conceptualization and their residential choice process within a similar a hierarchy of preferences. Expanding accessibility and transportation options can enhance livability, but its effectiveness is limited if other situational factors critical to residents' residential choice are not adequately addressed.
