The traditional definition of retranslation as the second or later rendering of a work into one same language is necessarily transformed when seen from a perspective informed by multimodality and intermediality. While the influence of multimodality on our understanding of translation practices has been variously discussed in the literature, little has been said about the relation between multimodality, intermediality and retranslation. Accordingly, this paper has two goals. Firstly, it seeks to discuss how multimodality and intermediality may have an effect on our theoretical knowledge of retranslation. Secondly, it aims to illustrate these theoretical observations through the analysis of different textualities originating in Bashir Lazhar, a one-character play by Québécois playwright Evelyne de la Chenelière. Of particular interest to build the present case study are the French and Spanish versions of the dramatic text as well as a specific stage performance delivered by French-Mexican actor and translator Boris Schoemann in Mexico City in 2012. In this paper, I examine the emergence of discourses on the indigenous during the postrevolutionary period in México (1920–1940), focusing on the Lake Pátzcuaro region, an iconic national landscape, and an indigenous region in central west México. Understood in terms of practice, this paper uses landscape as a lens to examine questions of identity, discourse, and power, emphasising its relational, constructed nature. It focuses on the set of discursive practices known as indigenismo. The central idea posed in this paper is that although postrevolutionary indigenismo served as a tool for governance, it also provided a language for the indigenous people to articulate their demands, enabling the articulation of indigenous identities. In this paper, we tackle the problem of forecasting future pandemics by training models with a COVID-19 time series. We tested this approach by producing one model and using it to forecast a non-trained time series; however, we limited this paper to the eight states with the highest population density in Mexico. We propose a generalized pandemic forecasting framework that transforms the time series into a dataset via three different transformations using random forest and backward transformations. Additionally, we tested the impact of the horizon and dataset window sizes for the training phase. A Wilcoxon test showed that the best transformation technique statistically outperformed the other two transformations with 100% certainty. The best transformation included the accumulated efforts of the other two plus a normalization that helped rescale the non-trained time series, improving the sMAPE from the value of 25.48 attained for the second-best transformation to 13.53. The figures in the experimentation section show promising results regarding the possibility of forecasting the early stages of future pandemics with trained data from the COVID-19 time series. This paper reports an ongoing exercise concerning the design of a logistics App to support operations within Farmers' Markets in Mexico. This exercise is part of a wider research agenda focused on 'Supporting Alternative Food Networks' (SAFeNET). This is a research agenda to conceive, build, implement, and develop better-informing decision-making processes that support effective and efficient AFNs (also known as Short Food Supply Chains) logistics operations in a digital environment, through smooth flows of goods and information among producers, AFNs coordinators, and consumers. This view calls for taking a systemic approach to help collectives of people to improve their autonomy and viability. Initial plans were to conduct this collaborative design exercise, using the Viable System Model (VSM) as a conversational tool. Accordingly, a series of face-to-face interviews and a focus group were planned. However, the lockdown due to COVID-19 forced researchers to abandon the face-to-face option and conduct the primary data collection online. The VSM intervention had to be adapted for its use on an online platform, in such a way that the platform would support knowledge building interactively, with a series of participants. This paper describes the format and visual appearance of the online VSM framework, its application, and the lessons learned through this exercise. Two points deserve to be highlighted: First, although the exercise outcome was very valuable for the next stage of the design, the participants' capacity for collective and individual reflection during the workshop was limited. Second, participants continued adding comments via the adopted online visual collaboration platform after the workshop ended, showing an understanding of the process and commitment beyond the researchers' expectations. Women in Mexico are subject to unusually high and traumatic levels of violence. This paper reviews a workshop process done in Mexico City that addressed the problem of violence against women using the Anticipatory Experimentation methodology. Based on a workshop at Centro University in Mexico City on the eve of historic protests against violence against women, the paper provides an overview of contemporary challenges, historical changes, as well as deep mythological images and assumptions within Mexican society that are pathways to reconceptualization. Leveraging emerging issues and recovered narratives to address and reframe the problem, the paper concludes with the metaphor of the Chamana as the narrative seed from which new ideas and experiments might be developed to address violence against women in Mexico. Future climate change is expected to increase the risk and severity of wildland fires in tropical regions. Synoptic-scale fire weather conditions in Mexico were carefully analyzed using 20 years of satellite hotspot and rainfall data, hourly weather data, and various climate data. Fire analysis results showed that eighty-four percent of all fires in Mexico occurred south of 22° N. Southwest Mexico (SWM, N < 22°, 94–106° W) and Southeast Mexico (SEM, N < 22°, 86–94° W), account for 50% and 34% of all fires in Mexico. Synoptic-scale analysis results using hourly data showed that westerly wind sea breezes from the Pacific Ocean blow toward the coastal land areas of the SWM while easterly wind sea breezes from the Caribbean blow into the SEM. The most sensitive weather parameters were "relative humidity" for the SWM and "temperature" for the SEM. The fire-related indices selected were "precipitable water vapor anomaly" for the SWM and "temperature anomaly" for the SEM. The SWM fire index suggests that future fires will depend on dryness, while the SEM fire index suggests that future fires will depend on temperature trends. I do hope that this paper will improve local fire forecasts and help analyze future fire trends under global warming in Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, four probability functions are compared with the purpose of establishing a methodology to improve the accuracy of wind energy estimations in a desert city in Northwestern Mexico. Three time series of wind speed data corresponding to 2017, 2018, and 2019 were used for statistical modeling. These series were recorded with a sonic anemometer at a sampling frequency of 10 Hz. Analyses based on these data were performed at different stationarity periods (5, 30, 60, and 600 s). The estimation of the parameters characterizing the probability density functions (PDFs) was carried out using different methods; the statistical models were evaluated by the coefficient of determination and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient, and their accuracy was estimated by the measured quadratic error, mean square error, mean absolute error, and mean absolute percentage error. Weibull, using the energy pattern factor method, and Gamma, using the Method of Moments, were the probability density functions that best described the statistical behavior of wind speed and were better at estimating the generated energy. We conclude that the proposed methodology will increase the confidence of both wind speed estimation and the energy supplied by small-scale wind installations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As global mobility surges, Mexico City has emerged as a favored destination for remote-working professionals due to its unique fusion of cultural allure and economic convenience. This paper explores the interplay between macroeconomic trends and quests for self-actualization among lifestyle migrants, informed by interviews and other fieldwork conducted in Mexico City in early 2023. It unravels the complex interplay of factors shaping attitudes, behaviors, and collective identity among these lifestyle migrants and how their conscious embeddedness dissolves as geographic arbitrage imbues them with new privileges. Anticipating and planning for the urgent response to large-scale disasters is critical to increase the probability of survival at these events. These incidents present various challenges that complicate the response, such as unfavorable weather conditions, difficulties in accessing affected areas, and the geographical spread of the victims. Furthermore, local socioeconomic factors, such as inadequate prevention education, limited disaster resources, and insufficient coordination between public and private emergency services, can complicate these situations. In large-scale emergencies, multiple demand points (DPs) are generally observed, which requires efforts to coordinate the strategic allocation of human and material resources in different geographical areas. Therefore, the precise management of these resources based on the specific needs of each area becomes fundamental. To address these complexities, this paper proposes a methodology that models these scenarios as a multi-objective optimization problem, focusing on the location-allocation problem of resources in Mass Casualty Incidents (MCIs). The proposed case study is Mexico City in a earthquake post-disaster scenario, using voluntary geographic information, open government data, and historical data from the 19 September 2017 earthquake. It is assumed that the resources that require optimal location and allocation are ambulances, which focus on medical issues that affect the survival of victims. The designed solution involves the use of a metaheuristic optimization technique, along with a parameter tuning technique, to find configurations that perform at different instances of the problem, i.e., different hypothetical scenarios that can be used as a reference for future possible situations. Finally, the objective is to present the different solutions graphically, accompanied by relevant information to facilitate the decision-making process of the authorities responsible for the practical implementation of these solutions. This paper tackles the challenge of time series forecasting in the presence of missing data. Traditional methods often struggle with such data, which leads to inaccurate predictions. We propose a novel framework that combines the strengths of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Bayesian inference. The framework utilizes a Conditional GAN (C-GAN) to realistically impute missing values in the time series data. Subsequently, Bayesian inference is employed to quantify the uncertainty associated with the forecasts due to the missing data. This combined approach improves the robustness and reliability of forecasting compared to traditional methods. The effectiveness of our proposed method is evaluated on a real-world dataset of air pollution data from Mexico City. Purpose: The active tuned mass damper (ATMD) system is underactuated where the number of actuators is less than the number of system's DOF. It is well known that the regulation of an underactuated system is challenging. Few reports can be found in the literature relating to the design of ATMD systems from the view point of their underactuated dynamics. In this paper, we firstly clarify the underactuated behavior of an ATMD system whose ill-conditioned controllability matrix largely limits the flexibility of controller design. Controllers are proposed to circumvent the underactuated dynamics to ensure vibration attenuation during the earthquake and rapid state convergence in the ATMD when the earthquake vanishes. Methods: This paper proposes a redefined output function to destroy the underactuated dynamics so that a stabilizing controller can be designed to regulate the new output. A low pass filter is suggested in the control loop to give boundedness of primal and auxiliary systems simultaneously supported by BIBO stability. Results: The simulation results show that the proposed ATMD design can give much better performance in both time and frequency responses compared with the traditional TMD design under the 1940 El Centro earthquake and 1985 Mexico City earthquake. Conclusion: The proposed output redefinition design removes the underactuated dynamics in the ATMD system effectively, and the low-pass filter inclusion preserves system passivity so that convergence of the states can be obtained. The World Crafts Council (WCC) was formed in 1964, according to its website, "to provide services to artists and craftsmen around the world [that will include] stimulating of public interest in and appreciation for the work of artists and craftsmen, providing a clearing house for creative, technical, economic and social assistance and a focus of cooperation among artists and craftsmen." In 1976, the Latin America Region of the WCC hosted the seventh biennial general assembly meeting of the global organization in Oaxtepec, Morelos, Mexico. Mexican president Luis Echeverría Álvarez inaugurated the June event. The general assembly, under the theme "The Living Crafts: Tradition and Quality," brought together artists and scholars from fifty-four nations around the globe to convene for five days of meetings, seminars, and workshops. International cooperation was the aim of the assembly and the mission of the WCC. Using the backdrop of the 1976 meeting in Oaxtepec, the author offers reflections on how the fifty-first annual conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America, held in Mexico City in 2023, mirrored the WCC's international convening of craft artists, as well as the challenges encountered when conducting archival research across borders. On 26 April 2017, Mexico formally adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda to link the national government to local governments, the private sector, civil society and academia. The restoration of heritage residential buildings (recovery programme) and the construction of new residential buildings aim to create a diversified environment for populations at different economic levels. However, the restoration programme faces conservation challenges. Given this context, this paper presents the results of in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted with stakeholders in Mexico's heritage and energy sectors. The duration of each interview was approximately two hours, with 52,372 total interview words. The paper identifies prevailing opinions regarding prioritising historical values, energy efficiency, historic buildings and users concerning Mexico City's Historical Centre, a World Heritage Site needing a more appropriate sustainable development plan. Using grounded theory and thematic analysis, the interview data were analysed based on the interrelationship between thermal comfort, energy efficiency and heritage conservation changes over time. The results of this research will strengthen our understanding of the interventions and processes involved in managing and living in this World Heritage Site and its future impacts on buildings. The approach also underscores the importance of how stakeholders prioritise different values in making energy efficiency-promoting decisions and enhances awareness of the decision-making process and actions adopted by heritage building users. Memorial landscapes are in constant transformation and their values reshape as history is being written. What effect does public opinion have on changes to these spaces? Recently, at an iconic monument in Mexico City a heated debate surrounding gender and the reshaping of the memorial landscape has engaged officials, conservators, protestors, and the public. The preservation of the Column of Independence has been contested from a feminist angle. Re-examining collective memory and heritage preservation in this dynamic space is difficult using traditional theories and practices. This paper reveals the lack of theories and practices available to heritage practitioners to cement new expressions of communicative memory into the cultural memory enshrined in the memorial landscape. The erasure of the contributions of women in the memorial landscape is highlighted. The article presents a study on a parameterization method to convert near-surface box averaged volume mixing ratios from Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) differential Slant Column Densities (dSCDs). The method was applied to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) MAX-DOAS dSCDs found at Mexico City Metropolitan Area in 2006. Moreover, a vertical 20 gradient in NO2 close to the ground was observed due to reduced mixing coupled with near surface emission.

State-centered and hierarchical government strategies based on technocratic top-down approaches have proved inadequate to address multiple interacting and cross-scale risks. In contrast, multilevel governance (MLG) provides a form of governance by networks that operate both in a horizontal arena with neighboring local governments, civil society organizations, and local communities, and in vertical settings, with higher-level governmental authorities and international organizations. In this paper, we examined the role and experience of local governments in a multilevel governance system for risk management in Mexico City. We sought to understand what collaborative resources local governments have to address multiple risks in Mexico City? How do they mobilize these resources in specific actions to address a risk, and how do they interact with different levels on diverse organizational scales? Our results show that resources for vertical and horizontal collaboration were key for local governments for coordination to address multiple risks. We found that collaboration was more common between local governments and with the subnational government. Also, the most common actions focused on forecasting and prevention, as well as preparedness and relief of multiple risks. We found evidence of successful elements of multilevel governance and identified the need for further research on the engagement and representation for non-governmental organizations and private actors in networks of risk management. The results from this study provide a better understanding of the arrangement of collaborative resources underlying local government actions under a state of urgency and scarcity, where action cannot wait for institutional change. The first European settlements in the new world faced technical issues with the help of the XVI century scientific advances. Besides briefly exposing the scientific and technological situation, this paper explores, with the help of reverse engineering, two singular mechanical wits representative of the technological advances introduced in America to overcome different problems. Firstly, a pump, based on an alternative movement system through crankshafts and pistons used against the continuous flooding suffered in the Ciudad de México valley. Although flooding remained a problem (it was solved in the XX century), hydraulic pumps were essential for continuous soil drainage. Secondly, a port crane for handling cannons, military devices, and construction materials during the Lima fortification in the XVII century. For both cases, reverse engineering, through engineering methods, Computer-Aided Design CAD programs, and additive manufacturing, provides virtual and/or tangible mockups that help to analyze and improve our knowledge about the dimensions, materials, and functions of used (and currently lost) mechanical systems during the American colonization. This paper aims to study storm events that lead to urban flooding and their after-effects in Bosque Chapultepec, an urban forest located in Mexico City. Considering Bosque Chapultepec’s landscape configuration and composition, along with micro-watersheds that drain into the four-sectioned study area, the water depths and velocities were estimated through hydrodynamic models in Iber derived from design storms for different return periods between 2 and 10,000 years. Risk to human safety assessment due to flooding was determined in terms of flow depth and velocity using the Dorrigo classification; and vulnerable zones prone to endanger people to be dragged by the flow were determined and classified following approach proposed by Milanesi, Pilotti, and Ranzi which has an inherent relationship not only to topographic data – since is one of the main data input in hydrodynamic simulations to create flood depth and velocity rasters – but also to human body conceptual model of human stability in a flow. 100-year return period storm events showed that more than 60% of area affected by flooding would not cause damages to light structures, vehicle instability nor reduce people’s ability for wading; and more than 90% on area where people were at risk of being washed away corresponded to very low levels, meaning that people passing by the forest only need to be cautious. Furthermore, in light of the latter, recommendations were proposed to prevent flooding in Bosque Chapultepec and to reduce both flood severity and risk to residents to being washed away. This paper presents an analysis of the morphology and columnar microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols in Mexico City (MC) for the period 2022–2023. The morphological study focused on the structure description of soot particles and tar balls (TB). By transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electrode microscope (SEM), voluminous soot aggregates mixed with TBs were observed. The chemistry shows that both soot and TBs are mostly carbonaceous species with well-defined morphologies. On the other hand, the columnar aerosol microphysical properties recovered from AERONET show that the particles have a bimodal aerosol size distribution (ASD) with two modes: fine and coarse. The ASD remains constant without showing significant seasonal changes, only with some variability for coarse particles. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) value is significantly high, typical of urban areas. The real (n) and imaginary (k) parts of the complex refractive index (CRI) were obtained from the photometric measurements. The CRI values show seasonal variations, with spring being the season with the highest values for n, while the highest values for k were measured in winter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to propose an alternate, efficient and scalable modeling framework to simulate large-scale bike-sharing systems using discrete-event simulation. This study uses this model to evaluate several initial bike inventory policies inspired by the operation of the bike-sharing system in Mexico City, which is one of the largest around the world. The model captures the heterogeneous demand (in time and space) and this paper analyzes the trade-offs between the performance to take and return bikes. This study also includes a simulation-optimization algorithm to determine the initial inventory and present a method to deal with the bias caused by dynamic rebalancing on observed demand. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is based on the analysis of an alternate and efficient discrete-event simulation modeling framework. This framework captures the heterogeneity of demand and allows one to experiment with large-scale models. This study uses this model to test several initial bike inventory policies and also combined them with an optimization engine. The results, provide valuable insights not only for the particular system that motivated the study but also for the administrators of any bike-sharing system. Findings: The findings of this paper include: most of the best policies use a ratio of bikes: docks near to 1:2; however, it is important the way they are initially allocated; a policy that contradicts the demand profile of the stations can lead to poor performance, regardless the quick and dynamic changes of bike locations during the morning period; the proposed simulation-optimization algorithm achieves the best results. Research limitations/implications: The findings are limited to the initial inventory of the system under study. The model assumes a homogeneous probability distribution function for the travel time. This assumption seems reasonable for the system under study. This paper limits the tested inventory policies to simple practical rules. There might be other sophisticated methods to obtain better solutions, but they might be system-specific. Practical implications: The insights of this paper are valuable for operators of bike-sharing systems because this study focuses on the analysis of the impact of the initial inventory assuming that dynamic rebalancing may not be existing during the morning peak-time. This paper finds that initial inventory has a great impact on the performance, regardless of how quickly the bikes are dispersed across the system. This study also provides insights into the effect of dynamic rebalancing on observed demand. Social implications: Increasing knowledge about the operation of the bike-sharing system has a positive effect on society because more cities around the world could consider implementing these systems as a public transportation mode. Furthermore, delivering suggestions on how to increase the user service level could incentivize people to adopt bikes as a mobility option, which would contribute to improve their health and also reduce air pollution caused by motorized vehicles. Originality/value: This paper considers that the contributions of this work to existing literature are the following: this study proposes a novel efficient and scalable simulation framework to evaluate initial bike inventory policies; the analysis presented in the paper includes an approach to deal with the bias in the observed demand caused by dynamic rebalancing and the analysis includes the value of demand information to determine an effective initial bike inventory policy. Introduction: Alcohol screening, brief advice and referral to treatment (SBIRT) in primary health care is an effective strategy to decrease alcohol consumption at population level. However, there is relatively scarce evidence regarding its economic returns in non‐high‐income countries. The current paper aims to estimate the return‐on‐investment of implementing a SBIRT program in Mexican primary health‐care settings. Methods: Empirical data was collected in a quasi‐experimental study, from 17 primary health‐care centres in Mexico City regarding alcohol screening delivered by 145 health‐care providers. This data was combined with data from a simulation study for a period of 10 years (2008 to 2017). Economic investments were calculated from a public sector health‐care perspective as clinical consultation costs (salary and material costs) and program costs (set‐up, adaptation, implementation strategies). Economic return was calculated as monetary gains in the public sector health‐care, estimated via simulated reductions in alcohol consumption, dependent on population coverage of alcohol interventions delivered to primary health‐care patients. Results: Results showed that scaling up a SBIRT program in Mexico over a 10‐year period would lead to positive return‐on‐investment values ranging between 21% in scenario 4 (confidence interval −8.6%, 79.5%) and 110% in scenario 5 (confidence interval 51.5%, 239.8%). Moreover, over the 10‐year period, up to 16,000 alcohol‐related deaths could be avoided as a result of implementing the program. The article presents a study of contradictory elements influencing the efficiency of water investment in Mexico City, Mexico. It explores how the multiple objectives of various actors in water projects are being balanced to reach integrated water management, with particular focus on the Santa Cararina Water Supply Project. Results suggest that the efficient and effective delivery of water projects are being constrained by multiple objectives of difference actors involved in the water project.

The article highlights the 14th Biennial Conference of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music that was held on June 25 to 29 2007 in Mexico City. The participants were very cooperative, which made for a convivial, friendly and egalitarian atmosphere, with plenty of chances to discuss a paper. An excellent series of evening events included a private viewing in the city's main gallery of an exhibition was included.

Urban green spaces provide ecosystem services that directly or indirectly benefit people, however, urban growth (especially in developing countries) generates the loss of these green areas and consequently of their ecosystem services. This paper aims to present the effects of land use and land cover changes in the last 30 years on two basic urban ecosystem services, water flow regulation and local and regional climate in two of main Latin American megacities (São Paulo and Mexico City). The study focuses on urban green spaces because they reduce the urban heat island effects, improve air quality, create habitats for biodiversity conservation, provide cultural services, and contribute to flooding prevention and groundwater conservation. A spatial analysis with the aid of geographic information systems was performed to assess (i) the urbanization process of the Metropolitan Areas of both cities over time; (ii) how this process generated changes in the land cover in both metropolises, and (iii) how these changes caused environmental negative impacts on ecosystem services. The loss of green areas as a consequence of urban expansion in the Metropolitan Areas of São Paulo and Mexico City changed the spatial distribution of urban heat island and increased the surface runoff, generating floods during the rainy periods. Our results suggest the urgent need for implementation of ecosystem-based spatial planning and ecological restoration of urban green areas in both studied cities to prevent further losses in ecosystem services and to improve the quality of life of urban inhabitants. To understand urbanization across the Global South, it is indispensable to consider situated heterogeneous urban situations shaped by global and local forces and their intersections. In the case of Mexico, the political and economic desire for globalization has extended beyond the great metropolis of Mexico City to mid-size cities triggering the formulation of their own urban strategies to become global. This paper explores the connections between neoliberal public policy, globalization, urban modeling, and socio-territorial sustainability in the territorial binomial of the city of Puebla and the municipality of San Andrés Cholula in the period of 2011–2017 and its current consequences, addressed by the local planning route map, and informed by the Orange Economy-guide of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), using relevant bibliographical sources, mapping, interviews of stakeholders, and fieldwork. The ultimate purpose of the research project described herein is to provide a multi-dimensional analysis of the development of the territorial situation of the Puebla-San Andrés Cholula-urban binomial, and of its current and potential future consequences, offering supporting information for its urban planning. The research results exposed here reveal urban modeling processes informed by the Global North urban globalization theory, development of global cities in the Global South, local socio-territorial dynamics characterized by economic and political interests imprinted in the public policy, and socio-territorial patterns inherited from the colonial past, resulting in socio-economic and racial discrimination, population displacements, real estate speculation, and risking ecological and environmental sustainability. This paper addresses policy effects of international mobility in developing countries. It proposes a multilevel approach to study research training policies, specifically focusing on international mobility schemes as capacity-building instruments, where effects need to be identified at both individual and organizational levels. The paper asserts that current categorizations of country efforts to build a solid scientific base should consider transference of effects in domestic research contexts. Using a survey and interview-based study of a mobility policy in Mexico, and nanotechnology-related disciplines and sectors, this paper's findings suggest that mobility policies are crucial in creating high-quality individual research skills, but that their impact on building domestic research capacity may be modest. This paper contributes to the evaluation literature on national research training programs and their influence on research capacity in two ways. First, it mobilizes a multilevel analytical approach to examine the effects of policies on individuals and organizations, offering a broader conceptualization of impact. This paper presents the results of a cross-sectional study on adolescents' behavioral and emotional reactions during and immediately after the 2017 Puebla earthquake that occurred in Mexico City. Convenience sampling was used to achieve a sample size of n = 362. Some of the key findings are as follows: a) some 57.0% of adolescent women and over 60.0% of men "ran out of the building" during the earthquake; only 17.4% of women and 14.2% of men took shelter. Early and late adolescent women were significantly associated with building "evacuation" immediately after the earthquake. b) Early and late adolescent men were "surprised" by the earthquake occurrence. c) The perceived vulnerability of the city (PVC) was significantly associated with men but not with women. d) Adolescents exhibited strong information-seeking behavior regarding seismic risk. The results of the study highlight a lack of adolescents' preparedness for earthquakes in terms of the protective actions taken during the ground shaking and knowledge of the functioning of the Mexican seismic alert system. Commuting is expensive in megacities of emerging economies. By decreasing work-related trips, teleworking may reduce congestion and commuting time. Taking Mexico City's office workers' as case study, this paper reports findings from a discrete choice experiment (DCE) exploring willingness to see a cut in monthly paycheck in exchange for teleworking two days a week from a shared office. This DCE explores preferences for bike parking spaces at shared office's facilities, and walking commuting time to shared office. This design allows estimation of willingness to pay (WTP) for teleworking across commuting time scenarios. Monthly WTP for teleworking 2 days a week starts at (2019) USD 76.68—if commuting time is zero. As 1 h of commuting time is valued at USD 61.97 on a monthly basis, WTP for teleworking 30 min away from home is USD 45.69. Wealthier respondents report higher value for commuting time and WTP for teleworking. Monthly value of bike parking infrastructure is USD 14.70—reaching USD 30.98 for commuters that walk or (motor-)bike less than 50 min. We illustrate how these stated benefits can inform cost-benefit analysis of transportation, housing, and labor policies that enable teleworking and/or reduce commuting times in Mexico City. This article examines the revolt of 1837 in New Mexico within the context of Mexico City's inattention to the North after Mexican independence and the destabilizing effects of U.S. commercial expansion. An analysis tracing the origins of the uprising to its suppression in January 1838 suggests that New Mexico's unrest had less to do with a federalist movement for autonomy or separatism than it did a rejection of ineffective governance and mismanagement common to both federalist and centralist regimes. More specifically, rebelling nuevomexicanos challenged the prevailing political economy of New Mexico sustained by what can be called the commercial order. This haphazard coalition of wealthy nuevomexicanos, American traders, and officials provided just enough revenue to maintain the basic functions of government; but, in their devotion to the overland trade between the United States and Mexico, New Mexican administrators enacted policies that promoted wars with Navajos and jeopardized the livelihoods of nuevomexicanos who relied on subsistence agriculture and the borderlands trade with independent Indians. Nuevomexicanos in 1837 ultimately rose up against not only the commercial order, but also the national government whose neglect after 1821 helped to engender and then perpetuate the maladministration of New Mexico. In this paper, closed-form expressions to calculate both the mean annual failure rate and the confidence factor are proposed. Reliability indicators are estimated assuming a normalization between capacity and demand called I DC . Simplified closed-form expressions are obtained in accordance with the probability seismic demand analysis used in SAC/FEMA. Uncertainties associated to mechanical, geometrical, and epistemic properties are taken into account, as well as uncertainties related to the occurrence of earthquakes. A comparison of both the mean annual failure rate and the confidence factor with I DC and the expressions proposed by Cornell and collaborators is performed. The numerical approach for the mean annual failure rate is obtained to verify the approximation of the closed-form solutions. Reliability indicators are obtained using six continuous reinforced concrete bridges designed to comply with three drift thresholds (0.002, 0.003 and 0.004). The bridge systems are situated in transition soil of Mexico City. Maximum differences of 4.1% and 10.6% are obtained between the proposed expression and the numerical solution for the mean annual rate of failure, estimated for two limit states: serviceability and collapse. This paper analyzes differential trends in rural depopulation and repopulation in nine municipalities of Mexico's Mixteca Alta region, in the southern state of Oaxaca, based on census data and interviews carried out in 2019. From 1950 to 2000, the study area experienced a substantial loss of population, linked essentially to out‐migration to Mexico City. However, from 2000 to 2020, four of the municipalities regained population, while the remaining five continued losing residents. This repopulation is explained by a declining but still positive natural population growth combined with less out‐migration and slightly more in‐migration, linked to growing return migration. However, in‐migration is too small to meaningfully explain the transition from massive depopulation to repopulation, meaning that concepts such as counterurbanization and rurbanization are not easily transposed onto the study area, as they centre their attention on the in‐migration of former urban dwellers. The paper thus highlights the importance of population retention—explained by local tertiarization, the possibility of commuting to nearby small cities, and the weakening of traditional pull factors—as key to understanding rural repopulation in the study area. Currently, most of methodologies available to evaluate the seismic performance of buildings use as index maximum interstory drifts. However, recent earthquakes have evidenced the need to develop performance levels that incorporate seismic resilience concepts to evaluate the level of post-seismic functionality of buildings and their capacity to recover functionality. Furthermore, such performance levels should explicitly consider the performance of structural, non-structural elements and contents. For this purpose, this paper proposes a set of six performance limit states for office-type buildings, in which the seismic performance of structural, non-structural elements and contents is explicitly considered. Each of these limit states is associated with a set of probable events that generically determine its recovery of functionality (e.g., post-seismic inspection and management of financial resources). To exemplify the proposed scheme a seven-story reinforced concrete building with unreinforced infill masonry walls and located in Mexico City is evaluated. The results obtained suggest that the building has a significant probability of experiencing loss of functionality due to the damage suffered mainly by the non-structural elements and contents. This indicates that modern seismic design codes, as that used for this study, accomplish their main objective, which is to reduce the probability of collapse and to prevent the loss of human lives. However, these results also demonstrate that the main objective of decision makers when designing such buildings, which is to be functional for one or several needs, is not achieved. Purpose: The need to improve sustainability in manufacturing firms, which would allow them to reduce the emission of pollutants and the generation of industrial waste, has stimulated the adoption of circular economy (CE) alongside lean manufacturing (LM) practices to significantly improve the sustainable performance of organizations. However, empirical evidence provided in previous studies and that has related the practices of LM, CE and sustainable performance do not allow establishing an interconnection between these three concepts. Therefore, this paper fills this gap in the literature by exploring the relationship between these three concepts. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative study in which data were collected from 460 managers working in the automotive industry in Mexico was conducted. The data allowed the testing and validation of four hypotheses through the use of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS SEM). Findings: The results obtained suggest that LM practices have a significant positive influence both on sustainable performance and CE. In turn, the results also demonstrate the existence of a significant positive relationship between CE and the sustainable performance of manufacturing firms in the automotive industry as well as that CE has a positive role in mediating the interconnection between LM practices and sustainable performance. Practical implications: The results obtained from the present study will allow entrepreneurs in the automotive industry and industry professionals as well as government authorities to formulate more effective policies and strategies to support the improvement of environmental sustainability performance in the manufacturing sector. Given the ubiquitous access to smartphones and social media, learners need to understand and be fluent in multiple literacies to act effectively as literate information consumers and information producers. When creating learning objectives, educators should explore the overlaps and contributions various frameworks can add. This article demonstrates how the ACRL Framework for Visual Literacy in Higher Education and the pedagogical framework of metaliteracy can be used in tandem, with each bringing unique strengths to prepare learners for a highly visual, highly participatory information environment. The aim of this paper is to present a performance-based method to estimate uniform risk spectra (URS) for the seismic design and assessment of structures. These spectra, computed with the proposed methodology, provide the lateral capacity (in terms of spectral acceleration) that should be given to a structure, characterized by a reference single degree of freedom system, to achieve a predetermined exceedance rate of economic loss. This procedure involves the seismic hazard assessment necessary to define a seismic design level consistent with the accepted loss value, using a large enough number of synthetic seismic records of several magnitudes, which were obtained by means of an improved empirical Green function method. The statistics of the expected losses of a reference single degree of freedom system are obtained using Monte Carlo simulation, considering the seismic demand and the lateral strength of the structure as random variables. The method is divided into two main stages: (1) definition of the seismic hazard at the site of interest and (2) the probabilistic analysis of the seismic performance in terms of an economical loss ratio of nonlinear SDOF. To illustrate the proposed methodology and, subsequently, to validate it, a URS was computed for a site located in the Mexico City lake-bed zone, and its use in the design of three reinforced concrete frames is shown. The results show that the proposed spectra provide a sufficient approximation between the seismic risk level considered in the seismic design and that of the designed structure. It is concluded that the proposed procedure is a significant improvement over others considered in the literature and a useful research tool for the further development of risk-based earthquake engineering. Propolis tinctures are popular alternative medicines, but mandatory labeling requirements relating to the inorganic content or percentage of ethanol are absent. Knowing the elemental content is useful for quality assurance/quality control of the tinctures between batches, as well as the safety of the products for consumers. Microwave plasma – atomic emission spectrometry (MP-AES) is a relatively low-cost, robust, multielemental technique that can analyze ethanolic extracts of propolis following minimum sample preparation. However, there are no published papers using MP-AES for this application. The technique was evaluated for the determination of sixteen elements in lab-made preparations and in 23 products from markets in Mexico. The matrix effects of the ethanol content of the samples were also evaluated and were found to affect the detection limit of some elements. There was high variability in the elemental composition of the major (K, Fe, Mg, and Na) and minor (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn) elements among the samples. The median concentrations of cadmium, and lead in the propolis tinctures were below 0.28 µg·L−1 and 2.8 µg·L−1, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multi-story buildings are an alternative for any developing city facing population growth and land scarcity. Recently, verticalization of the built environment has considered the possible use of confined masonry (CM) buildings because they combine adequate strength, lower construction and maintenance costs, and durability. This has brought attention to the possibility of extending the current knowledge for the design of low-rise CM buildings to mid-rise buildings. This paper discusses the conceptual design challenges from the fact that CM walls are designed to develop shear damage, which leads to the formation of an undesirable damage mechanism that reduces the global deformation capacity of the buildings as their height increases. To provide quantitative context, four models of 8 and 10-story buildings designed according to the Mexico City Building Code, and having walls built with high-strength masonry and horizontal joint reinforcement, were analyzed. The wide-column model and an idealized backbone curve, calibrated with experimental data, were used, respectively, to model the buildings and the nonlinear behavior of the walls. From the global properties and performance of the buildings, it is concluded that the current design approach for CM walls leads to the formation of a soft story, and an excessive damage concentration that compromises the global stability of mid-rise CM buildings for displacement demands smaller than those assumed during the design. Early identification of anomalies (such as leakages or sensor failures) in urban water distribution systems is critical to mitigating water scarcity in cities and is a challenge in water resource management. Several data-driven methods based on machine learning algorithms have been proposed in the literature for leakage detection in urban water distribution systems. Still, most of them are challenging to implement due to their complexity and requirements of vast amounts of reliable data for proper model generation. In addition, the required infrastructure and instrumentation to collect the data needed to train the models could be unaffordable. This paper presents the use and comparison of Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average models and Transfer Function models generated via the Box–Jenkins approach to modeling the water flow in water distribution systems for anomaly detection. The models were fit using water flow data from tanks operating in a branch of the water distribution system of Mexico City. The results showed that both methods helped select the best model type for each variable in the analyzed water branch, with Seasonal ARIMA models achieving a lower mean absolute percentage error than the fitted Transfer Function models. Furthermore, this methodology can be adjusted to different time windows to generate alerts at different rates and does not require a large sample size. The generated anomaly detection models could improve the efficiency of the water distribution system by detecting anomalies such as wrong measurements and water leakages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent times, both research and feminist movements have made it clear that there is Sexual Harassment (SH) in Mexican universities and which causes terrible academic, social, and emotional consequences for the victims. This research aims to measure SH at Universidad Pedagógica Nacional (UPN), a public university localized in Mexico City. Specifically, in this paper we: a) determined levels of SH, b) compared the percentage of people who had suffered at least one SH behavior in different campuses, and c) analyzed the open comments shared by the students. The instrument was applied to 645 students from the different campuses between October 19 and November 24, 2021. It was found that, unfortunately, there are behaviors with all levels of violence in UPN. Students were the ones who carried out the largest number of behaviors, but teachers carried out some of the most violent. Significant differences were found in the levels of SH that occur in different campuses. We believe that this paper provides relevant information to design better strategies to combat this problem. This article examines how participants in literacy events mediate the validation and legitimacy of official documents. Through articulating the perspectives of literacy as a social practice, paperwork studies, and the analysis of administrative burdens, we argue that the value of official documents is unstable and can fluctuate between valid and invalid each time applicants and frontline workers redefine the context of use. Through ethnographic observation, we gathered data on the historical production of birth certificates and the social construction of their meaning. We documented a participant's unsuccessful efforts to renew her voter's ID card over several years and in different government offices. We show how government employees rejected or accepted the same official birth certificate she presented, depending on how she framed her paperwork. Its meaning relied on the articulation of the negotiated administrative purpose, the definition of the context of use, and the document's materiality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper updates and extends the Political Market Framework (PMF) by integrating elements of interest groups and political market theory with policy entrepreneurs' (PEs) roles in explaining the patterns of urban infrastructure construction. The prominent role of PEs is observed through a grounded analysis of two large infrastructure projects in Mexico City. A comparative study of the cases suggests that: (1) The agency of PEs in political markets is central to explaining the construction of urban infrastructure; (2) PEs contribute to the definition of pro-growth or anti-growth coalitions and the definition of public problems; (3) the legitimacy of PEs is grounded in their political or technical reputation, or both; (4) the appropriate use of political institutions requires that PEs know how to use electoral timing strategically; and (5) the role of PEs seems to be better understood within a bounded analysis framework, such as the political markets approach. Using a panel data set of the 32 Mexican states and the 10 years from 2008 and 2017, this paper estimates the potential contribution of migration to international trade and foreign direct investment (FDI). In the context of Mexico and the United States, we estimate models with a generalized propensity scores (GPS) methodology in order to account for the endogeneity of the migration decision, in addition to baseline gravity models. We find a generally positive and significant relationship between Mexico-US migration and Mexico-US imports, exports, and inward FDI from the US to Mexico. While mixed evidence is found across the various gravity estimations regarding the relationship between Mexico-US migration and inward FDI from the US to Mexico, the GPS results signal consistency across various estimations. Even when controlling for size of the state population, size of the state economy, distance from the capital city of each state to the Mexico-US border, and the fact that a state is on the Mexico-US border, basic results remain consistent. We conclude that in this context migration complements trade and inward FDI, and point to transnationalism as a central factor that leads to migration's positive contribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How were solidarity campaigns transnationally organized and locally performed? To answer this question, this paper examines anti-imperialist solidarity campaigns and their role in the politics of Mexico City in the 1920s. The paper analyzes two political movements: the campaign against the conviction of the Italian-American anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti in the United States and the campaign in solidarity with rebel general Augusto César Sandino who fought against US troops in his native Nicaragua. Transnational solidarity campaigns, it is argued, were an important link between local radical activism and global movements as solidarity had to be performed locally and envisioned globally. Demonstrations, economic boycotts, and public fundraising campaigns were means to perform solidarity in the city, linking local activism to the global anti-imperialist movement. With the example of activism in Mexico City in the post-revolutionary 1920s, this paper analyzes performative and ideological change over time and how the asymmetric potential of localization and globalization affect transnational solidarity campaigns.
