Introduction: The distribution of health care workers differs greatly across Australia, which is likely to impact health delivery. Objective: To examine demographic and workplace setting factors of doctors, nurses and midwives, and allied health professionals across Modified Monash Model (MMM) regions and identify factors associated with shortfalls in the health care workforce. Design: Descriptive cross‐sectional analysis. The study included all health professionals who were registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency in 2021, and who were working in Australia in their registered profession. The study examined number of registrations and full‐timed equivalent (FTE) registrations per MMM region classification, adjusted for population. Associated variables included age, gender, origin of qualification, Indigenous status and participation in the private or public (including government, non‐government organisation and not‐for‐profit organisations) sectors. Findings: Data were available for 31 221 general practitioners, 77 277 other doctors, 366 696 nurses and midwives, and 195 218 allied health professionals. The lowest FTE per 1000 people was seen in MM5 regions for general practitioners, other doctors, nurses and midwives, and allied health professionals. Demographic factors were mostly consistent across MM regions, although MM5 regions had a higher percentage of nurses and midwives and allied health professionals aged 55 and over. In the private sector, FTE per 1000 people was lowest in MM5‐7 regions. In the public sector, FTE per 1000 people was lowest in MM5 regions. Discussion: A disproportionate shortfall of health workers was seen in MM5 regions. This shortfall appears to be primarily due to low FTE per capita of private sector workers compared with MM1‐4 regions and a low FTE per capita of public sector workers compared with MM6‐7 regions. Background: Norwegian society's resilience during the COVID‐19 pandemic resulted in low mortality rates and moderate economic decline. The accessible primary healthcare system played a vital role in this, especially in the care of elderly and chronically ill patients. However, nurses in home care experienced emotional burdens, ethical dilemmas and limited access to protective equipment. These challenges were overshadowed by media coverage of hospital struggles, and municipal home care services were oddly absent from post‐pandemic reports. This research therefore aimed to explore and describe how nurses experienced working in home care during the pandemic. Methods: We designed a qualitative study and conducted semi‐structured interviews with nine home care nurses from different municipalities in Southeast Norway. Systematic text condensation inspired by Malterud was employed for data analysis. Results: Nurses' experiences were described through two categories: 'adapting approaches' and 'adapting work practices'. The results showed how nurses often felt alone while simultaneously shouldering a significant responsibility for patients facing a novel and unfamiliar illness. The pandemic necessitated treating patients in their own homes to minimise infection risks, intensifying the nurses' treatment responsibilities. Furthermore, limited access to medical expertise and physical separation from management due to remote work accentuated feelings of isolation and amplified the nurses' responsibility for patient care. Additionally, the nurses encountered frequent changes in work routines, demanding adaptability. Conclusion: This study underscores the significant role of home care nurses, who, despite feeling professionally isolated and unsupported, demonstrated impressive adaptability. They served as a crucial buffer in the healthcare system, ensuring vulnerable individuals received essential care. This highlights the importance of a robust primary healthcare system with a skilled nursing workforce that can work autonomously, shoulder responsibility, and make clinical decisions, even when medical expertise is less readily available. Online learning has the potential to improve best practice in substance use treatment by facilitating access to high-quality resources. A user-centered design (UCD) approach can identify the needs, motivating factors, and working contexts of learners. Aim: The aim of this study was to identify ways of improving online learning for people working in substance use treatment services in England. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 31 substance use professionals in England and 14 other professionals working in the field. Participants were asked about their training needs, working contexts, and current use of online resources. Data were analyzed according to the principles of UCD via Iterative Categorisation. Results: Participants reported "unmet needs" for training in therapeutic relationships and advanced therapeutic techniques. They enjoyed training that demonstrably improved the quality of life for people who use drugs and that provided career and personal development opportunities. Participants completed many mandatory online courses that were short and unpopular. Access to training was limited by time and financial constraints, with online training partially addressing these barriers. Conclusion: If online learning is to be optimized, the needs of substance use professionals must be accommodated; however, online learning that meets the needs of substance use professionals does not always match the best evidence. With climate change fueling more frequent and intense periods of hot weather, heat stress management programs are becoming increasingly important for protecting the health and safety of workers in the Canadian mining industry. While the inclusion of heat-mitigation measures such as those provided by the American College of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) are commonly employed by industry, there is a need to develop more comprehensive industry-specific measures for heat stress prevention and management. To better understand current heat management practices and identify opportunities for improvement, an exploratory survey of 51 employees responsible for health and safety at underground mining (n = 35), and surface operations (n = 16) (e.g., open-pit mining, milling, smelting, and exploration site) was conducted in Canada. The respondents answered 50 questions related to workplace heat stress management, including descriptors of the workplace environment, perceived heat stress hazard, administration of heat stress management programming, heat stress emergency procedures, environmental monitoring strategies, and knowledge of mining-specific regulations related to heat stress. Twenty-four managers (47%) reported that heat-related illnesses led to restricted duty or lost time claims at their site, with a median of 5 [IQR: 2–10, max: 30] reportable heat-related illnesses occurring per site annually. Many also felt that heat-related illnesses are under-reported by their workforce (n = 36, 71%). Most sites reported established heat stress management programs to prevent heat illness (n = 43, 84%), typically based on the TLVs (n = 38, 75%). Although some organizations do conduct pre-task evaluations for heat stress (n = 30, 59%), more than half do not conduct post-job evaluations (n = 28, 55%) or pre-employment screening for heat stress vulnerability (n = 3, 6%). While our findings indicate that the health and safety managers recognize the hazard posed by heat and have stated practices to help address the hazard, we also observed inconsistencies in heat stress management programming across the sample. Developing and adopting a standard heat stress management and reporting system would be an important step toward protecting workers from existing and emerging threats from extreme heat and climate change. Background: There is an increasing demand for comprehensive geriatric care. Nurse practitioners (NPs), who undergo specialized training, are situated to provide such care. In Israel, the role of a geriatric nurse practitioner was introduced in the health care system 10 years ago. However, little is known about the rate of professional satisfaction and realization of full potential among these nurses. Purpose: The aims of this study are (1) to describe the geriatric NP workforce in Israel, (2) to measure the current geriatric scope of practice, and (3) to measure the geriatric NP satisfaction from their working environment. Methodology: For this cross-sectional study, a survey, comprising three sections relating to demographics, professional qualifications and scope of practice, and career satisfaction, was sent to 53 geriatric nurse practitioners in Israel who currently work as geriatric nurse practitioners. Results: Forty-seven nurses participated in the survey. Almost 64% reported that they are satisfied with their position, and 72% reported that they are able to fulfill their full scope of practice. The mean score for scope of practice was 68.31 out of a possible score of 100. Conclusions: A number of qualifications were correlated with satisfaction at work, indicating that nurses tend to be more satisfied at work when they are able to fulfill their potential. Implications: Ensuring nurse practitioners' ability to realize their full potential should be a goal of the health care system. The authors argue on the need to address logistics that will allow remote-practicing pathologists to move forward to resolve the continuing and growing pathologist shortage following the COVID-19 pandemic. Cited are career and technical interventions that need to be addressed to put an end to pathologist shortage, and the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guideline memorandum on continuing remote pathology diagnosis in the postpandemic era.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a looming pandemic whose poor health outcomes are unlikely to be equitably distributed. This article focuses on intersections between AMR and inequities in health care workplaces in the United States and identifies the following as key problems: lack of published data on task-specific occupational health risks related to colonization and infection with antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, limited scientific literature reporting on race and ethnicity, and poor access to infection control educational opportunities for minoritized health care workers. This article argues that an equitable approach to remediating these problems requires improving surveillance and expanding research on how AMR is likely to influence health outcomes among members of the US-based health care workforce. Background: Nurses have faced significant personal and professional stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic that have contributed to increased rates of burnout, intention to leave, and poorer work engagement. Resilience has been identified as a critical factor influencing job outcomes; however, the dynamics of this association have not yet been investigated within the context of the Thai workforce. The study objective was to determine the associations between resilience and job outcomes, including burnout, intention to leave, and work engagement among nurses working in Thailand during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study gathered data from a sample of 394 registered nurses employed across 12 hospitals. The research instruments comprised the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Health Services Survey (MBI-HSS), a questionnaire assessing the intention to leave the job, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). To determine the associations among the measured variables, multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted. Results: One-third of nurses experienced emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and about half experienced reduced personal accomplishment; one-tenth of nurses intended to leave their job. Nurses who exhibited higher levels of resilience were found to have a significantly reduced likelihood of experiencing high emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment. Conversely, these nurses were more likely to report higher levels of work engagement than their less resilience. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic offers important lessons learned about promoting the well-being of the nursing workforce and protecting against adverse job outcomes. While we identified resilience as a significant predictor of several nurse outcomes, other work environment factors should be considered. Government and hospital administrations should allocate resources for individual and organizational-level interventions to promote resilience among frontline nurses so that hospitals will be better prepared for the next public health emergency and patient and nurse outcomes can be optimized. The recruitment and retention of in-patient psychiatric mental health registered nurses (PMH-RNs) remains a challenge. This qualitative study sought to identify factors impacting the recruitment and retention of PMH-RNs in acute-care settings. Participants (N = 15) were recruited for focus groups including one with in-patient unit administrators (n = 4), two with current PMH-RNs (n = 7), and two with nursing students (n = 4). Data were analyzed using a directed content analysis approach. Participants were informed about the study's purpose, procedures, potential risks, and benefits, and they provided verbal consent before participating. Administrators emphasized a focus on retention and described a variety of supports they provided PMH-RNs, including formal and informal support and education. PMH-RNs' most prevalent concerns were their safety, co-worker and/or management challenges, and emotional and/or physical exhaustion. Students also expressed concerns about safety in psychiatric settings and desired more interaction with PMH-RNs. They were also interested in learning more about the specialty as they valued the opportunity to see change in patients. All three groups mentioned a need for more interaction between students and PMH-RNs, while safety concerns were expressed by both PMH-RNs and students. Because PMH-RNs play a critical role for in-patient psychiatric care, recruiting and retaining specialist nurses can focus on increasing student engagement with the PMH-RNs, attending to PMH-RNs' management and staffing concerns, and providing additional resources for responding to events that threaten safety in the workplace to prevent burnout. To attract and retain a more diverse workforce, organizations embrace diversity initiatives, expressed in diversity statements on their websites. While the explicit content of diversity statements influences attitudes towards organizations, much less is known about the effect of subtle cues such as emotions. In three pre‐registered studies, we tested the effect of positive emotionality in diversity statements on attitudes towards organizations. Study 1 focused on the degree to which 600 European organizations employed emotionality in their diversity statements, finding that although their statements differed in the level of emotionality, on average, organizations avoided highly emotional words. Study 2 (N = 220 UK participants) tested the effect of original diversity statements on readers' attitudes towards an organization, demonstrating that the level of emotionality in the existing statements did not influence positive attitudes towards the organization. In Study 3 (N = 815 UK participants), we thus modified the diversity statements so that they contained high levels of positive emotionality that triggered more positive emotions and resulted in more positive attitudes towards an organization. Taken together, highly emotional words (e.g. passionate; happy; wholeheartedly) are key in diversity statements if organizations wish to increase their attractiveness among potential employees. High staff turnover is common within the Australian public mental health workforce, contributing to workforce shortages and ultimately impacting the ability to provide stable efficient, effective, and ongoing optimal care to the community. In this study, we aimed to (a) establish the most pertinent factors associated with increased turnover intention in the public mental health workforce in Australia, and (b) establish whether such factors differ between metropolitan and rural services. We used a cross‐sectional, correlational design using an online survey method. In total, 235 mental health service staff of various disciplines and levels, from four public hospitals in Victoria, Australia participated in the study. We used three feed‐forward multiple regression analyses to assess the study aims. We found that job satisfaction, occupational burnout, and understaffing may be the most pertinent factors to consider regarding turnover intention. Job satisfaction and occupational burnout were factors endorsed across the entire sample, as well as specifically within both the metropolitan and rural services, while understaffing was a pertinent factor regarding turnover intention across the entire sample and for rural services, but not metropolitan services. Our findings regarding the pertinence of job satisfaction, occupational burnout, and understaffing in turnover intention provide key information that may be used to inform interventional targets aimed at reducing attrition from the public mental health workforce in Australia. Recently, there have been reports of children without placement (CWOP) in foster care, often resulting in youth sleeping in hotels or child protective service offices. This study explored perspectives of the current crisis among child welfare practitioners who managed CWOP cases. We conducted interviews with 11 child welfare practitioners who had graduated from two universities in a Southern state. Themes aligned with the trauma-informed framework and highlighted challenges related to organizational climate, workforce development, and trauma-informed services. Implications include strategies for cross-sector collaboration, specific training, and continued research to support a healthy, trauma-informed workforce that can better meet youth needs. Testing an adapted psychology of working theory (PWT) model (PWT; Duffy et al., 2016), this study examined how and when contextual constraints affect the ability of Chinese rural migrant workers (农民工) to attain decent work. Surveying a sample of 510 employed Chinese rural migrants at two time points, this study revealed that economic constraints and daily discrimination were indirectly related to attaining decent work through the mediating factors of work volition and psychological ownership over work. In addition, proactive personality moderated the relationships between daily discrimination and economic constraints and the two mediators. The results contribute to better understanding Chinese rural migrant workers' work experience, refining the PWT and enriching the literature on the underlying mechanisms and moderating factors associated with decent work attainment. The research results call for policy and social change to lessen economic constraints and discrimination at the macro level and organizational commitment to employee-oriented human resource management and counseling interventions to improve the quality of the work lives of rural migrant workers. Background: Missed care is defined as the omission or delay of necessary patient care and is internationally reported by nurses as a significant safety risk. Nurses working at night also report high levels of occupational fatigue that, coupled with inadequate staffing and practice environment support, may impede a nurse's ability to carry out the nursing process and lead to more missed care. Objective: The study's objective was to examine the interrelationships among organizational and nurse characteristics, occupational fatigue, and missed care among nurses working at night. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used. Participants included registered nurses (RNs) who worked at night in New Jersey acute care hospitals. Multiple linear regression and simple moderation analyses were performed to examine the associations. Results: Nurses reported missing necessary care at night. Unsupportive practice environments, high RN workloads, high patient–RN ratios, high chronic fatigue levels, and low intershift recovery were individually associated with missed care at night. High patient-to-RN ratios and chronic fatigue were independently associated with missed care. However, patient-to-registered-staffing levels had the most considerable effect on missed care at night. Nurses' years of experience and the number of hours of sleep between shifts were significant moderators of the relationship between occupational fatigue states and missed care. Discussion: This study is the first to examine the interrelationship between occupational fatigue levels, organizational and nurse characteristics, and missed care at night. There is an urgent need to implement strategies in hospital organizations that foster work schedules and adequate staffing patterns that lessen nurses' occupational fatigue levels to ensure our workforce's and patients' safety. There is no doubt that extreme contexts (e.g., war zones and pandemics) represent substantial disruptions that force many companies to rethink the way they do business. With so much of the workforce now working remotely and concerns about resulting work alienation, we must ask this question: How can this be translated into the generational divide in workplaces based in extreme contexts? Using COVID‐19 as an example trigger of extreme‐context experience, therefore, we investigate generation as a moderator of the effects of extreme‐context perception upon anxiety leading to alienation with subsequent behavioral outcomes on job insecurity, job satisfaction, and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). A time‐lagged survey procedure yielded 219 valid responses from a three‐generation sample of employees working in multiple service organizations. The data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS‐SEM). Our analysis suggested that intense extreme‐context perception led to elevated anxiety and alienation, which, in turn, heightened job insecurity and worsened job satisfaction and OCB outcomes. Finally, during the experience of extreme‐context times, generation was found to moderate our model, such that both Generation Y and Generation Z experienced higher anxiety due to extreme‐context perception and hence higher job insecurity due to alienation compared with Generation X respondents. Our results endorse the criticality of implementing agile and generationally non‐sectarian management for effectively functioning generationally diverse workforces in pandemic times. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses and nurse leaders are increasingly vocal about chronic understaffing and the impact the staffing crisis continues to have on nurses' well-being and patient outcomes. The American Nurses Association's Nurse Staffing Task Force addressed the importance of staffing standards as a critically needed step toward improving patient and population health outcomes. Against the backdrop of ongoing nursing shortages, hospital leaders have been hesitant to embrace staffing ratios, expressing concerns about their ability to hire and retain sufficient nursing staff, as operational revenue margins remain thin and nursing labor is costly. This article explicates structural issues within the current nursing reimbursement model that harms hospitals' business case for investments in nurse staffing and work environments. We argue that nurses must advocate for nursing reimbursement reform to increase the nursing workforce and improve nurse staffing and work environments. Health care workers (n = 71) completed an online survey or participated in one of five focus groups. Clinical cutoff scores revealed concerning levels of depression (16%), anxiety, and burnout (49%). Qualitative responses (n = 172) yielded two themes: work environment and well-being. Foreign-owned firms' attractiveness as an employer is crucial for recruiting and retaining talented local job seekers since the new generation is concerned about the social image of their organization. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is one of the practical tools to connect host country society and create social acceptability. Socially acceptable businesses are comparatively attractive to work with. Drawing on signaling theory to support the study findings, we used cross-sectional surveys with 182 local employees of export-oriented Chinese enterprises in Bangladesh export processing zone (EPZ) areas. We applied structural equation modeling (SEM) to assess the study hypotheses. In addition, Preacher and Hayes mediation analyses were used to evaluate the mediating effect of employer attractiveness on the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and job pursuit intention. The findings demonstrated a strong association between the research variables and indicate that CSR positively influences employer attractiveness and job pursuit intention. The results show that employer attractiveness partially mediates the impact of CSR on job pursuit intention. This research provides HR managers with practical insights for boosting employer attractiveness, which may play a crucial role in recruiting a competent local workforce. This article is part of an American Board of Pediatrics Foundation-sponsored effort to analyze and forecast the pediatric subspecialty workforce between 2020 and 2040. Herein, an overview of the current pediatric gastroenterology workforce is provided, including demographics, work characteristics, and geographic distribution of practitioners. Brief context is provided on the changing nature of current practice models and the increasing prevalence of some commonly seen disorders. On the basis of a rigorous microsimulation workforce projection model, projected changes from 2020 to 2040 in the number of pediatric gastroenterologists and clinical workforce equivalents in the United States are presented. The article closes with a brief discussion of training, clinical practice, policy, and future workforce research implications of the data presented. This data-driven analysis suggests that the field of pediatric gastroenterology will continue to grow in scope and complexity, propelled by scientific advances and the increasing prevalence of many disorders relevant to the discipline. The workforce is projected to double by 2040, a growth rate faster than most other pediatric subspecialties. Disparities in care related to geography, race, and ethnicity are among the most significant challenges for the years ahead. Changes to training and education, incentives to meet the needs of underserved populations, and new multidisciplinary models for health care delivery will be necessary to optimally meet the volume, diversity, and complexity of children with gastroenterological diseases in the years ahead. Mental health nursing is a privilege and a rewarding profession. There has been a call for transformational change in mental health services to improve outcomes for the people of New Zealand, with mental health nurses integral to this. However, with predicted nursing shortages, high levels of burnout, and increasing demands in the workplace, an organizational focus on wellbeing for mental health nurses is needed to sustain the workforce, implement change and improve outcomes for people using mental health services. An integrative review of the literature was undertaken to explore how organizations can optimize mental health nurses' wellbeing in the workplace and to identify measures for organizations to support mental health nurses' wellbeing with a focus on New Zealand. Seven articles were included in this review after a search, data extraction and evaluation. Data were synthesized and categorized using thematic analysis. The findings indicate organizations can invest in several initiatives to enhance mental health nurses' wellbeing in the workplace. These include professional development, skills to build resilience, enabling time to reflect on practice, enhancing professional supervision, having the right managerial support and focusing on individual's strengths. Organizations need to prioritize mental health nurses' wellbeing by embedding the practical strategies this review identified and by addressing organizational barriers to wellbeing. Organizations should consider implementing multileveled organizational wellbeing initiatives to nurture and grow the New Zealand mental health nursing workforce which in turn will contribute to quality care and enable mental health nurses to have long meaningful careers. Current evidence suggests understaffing is related to poor quality and missed care in a global context, but this relationship is complex. There is also a research gap for quality in mental health care in the United Kingdom that includes a wider set of patient outcomes. This paper aims to investigate RMN's perception of quality of care on their last shift, their self‐reported reasons for compromised care and potential impact on patient outcomes. A mixed methods approach, we used descriptive statistics to create a framework within which to qualitatively analyse data from the 2017 Royal College of Nursing (RCN) employment survey to consider the complex relationship between understaffing and care quality. We established three themes: 'Understaffing', 'Professional Code Expectations and Moral Distress' and 'Management'. In line with the current evidence; lack of resources and understaffing were consistently present throughout. Nurses also felt pressure from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of conduct which in turn instilled shame and fear for their registration when they were unable to achieve the standards expected. This was further exacerbated by poor management and supervision; leading nurses to reflect on poor outcomes for patients which compromised not only legal rights but safety of patients and staff alike. In 2016, as a trainee doctor, I wrote a paper on changing the culture of medicine. I felt the medical system was broken back then, and it seems even less functional now, with higher rates of burnout, dropout and staff shortages nationally. As a result of a lack of resources, it feels impossible to provide the care to our communities expected of us, making our work challenging and disheartening. Until all stakeholders acknowledge the systemic issues faced by our workforce, service outcomes and physician well‐being may not improve. We need to collaborate and innovate to reform the healthcare system taking a multifaceted, evidence‐based approach, implementing an appropriate balance of systemic change and interventions to support individual well‐being. As we collectively work towards these changes, tragic optimism may spur physicians to develop meaning and purpose despite the inevitable challenges. Objectives: There is limited literature on the experiences of internationally educated nurses (IENs) who have joined NHS trusts in England in the past 20 years. The objectives of this integrative review included exploring and analysing the experiences of IENs in the NHS in England and identifying the cultural, pastoral and training needs of IENs during their first 2 years working in England and providing research-informed recommendations to better support IENs. Design: An integrative review of primary research studies using quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods of data collection. Data source: CINAHL, British Nursing Index and Google Scholar. Results: Nine articles met the inclusion criteria for this integrative review. All articles contributed to the findings of three main analytical themes: expectations, challenges and belongingness. Conclusion: Limited research fully met the search criteria. This was concerning since IENs have been working in the NHS for decades, yet so few primary studies have been conducted into their experiences. The findings were in line with previous studies, which found that IENs faced challenges both in the workplace and in settling into an English way of life, and often reported feeling that they were not treated equally to their English counterparts. This integrative review raises issues and increases awareness of how the NHS in England can better support IENs transitioning into their new life and ways of working, to further aid recruitment and retention of the international nursing workforce. Background and Objectives This study aims to examine why rural-to-urban migrant workers in China remain in the workforce after age 60. Research Design and Methods Semistructured interviews were conducted and transcribed. Interview transcriptions were coded and analyzed by inductive content analysis. Results Rural-to-urban migrant workers in China continue to work even after they reach age 60 for reasons related to personal and family finances, as well as cognitive motivational, sociocultural, and working condition factors. Discussion and Implications Findings from this study deepen our understanding of the specific reasons why older rural-to-urban migrant workers in China continue working after age 60. While these findings emphasize the need for improved welfare programs and enhanced health care for older migrant workers, they also underscore the importance of providing a healthy and safe work environment for older workers. Industries are currently struggling with ageing workforce in modern production systems associated with Industry 4.0. The industrial socio-demographic problem is more and more present as the increasing of the ageing population results in the prolongation of the working life and the consecutively in the ageing of the workforce in industries. This paper aims to conduct a systematic literature review on the challenges and concerns of ageing operators, including the physical, cognitive, ergonomic, and well-being conditions of the ageing workforce in the Industry 4.0 environment. The ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed scientific databases were used to survey the studies and selected using PRISMA guidelines. This paper was structured and analysed by clusters: Ageing, Industry 4.0, Human Factors, and Ergonomics. These clusters were developed as research lines: Ageing as the socio-demographic challenge, Industry 4.0 as the technological development, Human Factors as the individual characteristics of the operator, and Ergonomics as the work environment. Aims and objectives: To explore the long‐term impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on nurse alcohol consumption. Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic has caused immense disruption to healthcare services worldwide, and nurses have not been immune, experiencing burnout, declining mental health and ultimately, attrition from the profession. Increases in alcohol consumption have been reported across subsections of society, including those with pre‐existing mental ill health and experiencing high stress, and exploring this phenomenon in nurses is essential for workforce well‐being and sustainability. Design: Qualitative descriptive study design. Methods: Secondary analysis of individual, semi‐structured interviews with nurses (N = 42) from diverse settings across Australia, including community, primary and hospital settings, conducted in July and August 2021. Data were analysed using structural coding and reported in accordance with the CORE‐Q guidelines. Findings Two key themes were found after analysis of the data: (1) factors influencing alcohol consumption (subthemes: workplace factors and external factors), and (2) the pandemic's influence on alcohol consumption (subthemes: increased consumption, moderation of consumption and alcohol as a reward). Conclusions: Several participants described increased alcohol consumption because of the COVID‐19 pandemic, particularly due to the stress of working in an environment where resources were scarce. Workplace factors such as overtime, missed breaks and heightened workload were all described as driving stress, and in turn increased alcohol consumption. Relevance to clinical practice: Increased alcohol consumption has been associated with burnout, absenteeism and intention to leave. The nursing profession is currently undergoing significant continuing stress providing care and management to patients with the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus, and increased alcohol consumption is a significant threat to personal and workforce well‐being, workforce sustainability and quality nursing care. Aims: The study aimed to (1) discover workers' attitudes toward the use of novel video screens to improve hand sanitization in the workplace and (2) discover what workers' preferences are for hand hygiene (HH) messaging style and tone and reasons for their preferences. Background: Practicing good HH in non-medical office settings is vital to curb the spread of a range of common and infectious diseases. Despite this, workers are rarely consulting in the construction of HH messages. The qualitative views of users can provide us with the "why" rather than the "what" and can highlight areas of cynicism, concern and overall attitudes to HH. Methods: A survey was completed by 520 UK workers concerning attitudes and views toward HH messaging and the use of a video-based hand sanitizer unit. Analysis consisted of both qualitative and quantitative methods. Results: Workers were skeptical toward the use of digital technologies within HH interventions, and there were misgivings about the role that video could play. Results demonstrated a strong preference for positive and supportive messages. Educational and trustworthy qualities were well rated. Messages that emphasized surveillance, previously successful in a clinical setting, or guilt, were not well received. Visual approaches that utilized serious illustration were valued. Conclusion: This study highlights how consulting workers before the design of HH initiatives is important in guiding the design process. Background: To maintain and improve the quality of the cancer nursing workforce, it is crucial to understand the factors that influence retention and job satisfaction. We aimed to investigate the characteristics of cancer nurses in Australia and identify predictors of job satisfaction. Methods: We analysed data from an anonymous cross-sectional survey distributed through the Cancer Nurses Society Australia membership and social media platforms from October 2021 to February 2022. The survey was compared to national nursing registration data. Data were analysed with non-parametric tests, and a stepwise, linear regression model was developed to best predict job satisfaction. Results: Responses were received from 930 cancer nurses. Most respondents (85%) described themselves as experienced nurses, and more than half had post-graduate qualifications. We identified individual, organizational, and systemic factors that contribute to job satisfaction and can impact in workforce shortages. The findings include strategies to address and prioritize workforce challenges. There were 89 different titles for advanced practice nursing roles. Managing high workload was a reported challenge by 88%. Intention to stay less than 10 years was reported by nearly 60%; this was significantly correlated with job satisfaction and age. Significantly higher scores for job satisfaction were associated with those who had career progression opportunities, career development opportunities, adequate peer support and a clearly defined scope of role. Conversely, job satisfaction scores decreased the more people agreed there was a lack of leadership and they had insufficient resources to provide quality care. Conclusion: Cancer nurses are critical to the delivery of cancer care however, the workforce faces multiple challenges. This study provides an understanding of the Australian cancer nursing workforce characteristics, their roles and activities, and highlights important considerations for retaining nurses in the profession. Objective The physical therapist labor market has recently noted higher rates of turnover and job vacancies. An understudied factor contributing to these trends in the profession is job satisfaction. The profession continues to experience relatively low wages compared with other health professions, and graduates of Doctor of Physical Therapy programs face increasingly high student debt. This study used the labor-search model as a conceptual framework to understand associations between job satisfaction, income, and educational debt. The purpose of this study is to observe the financial and workplace factors that are associated with higher levels of physical therapist job satisfaction. Methods Data from 4764 physical therapists in 1 state were captured retrospectively through the state's licensure renewal process from 2014 to 2020. A random effects panel analysis, with job satisfaction as the dependent variable, was used to evaluate the relationships between job satisfaction and income, educational debt, and a variety of work-related factors. Results Job satisfaction was negatively correlated with educational debt, number of hours worked per week, and some practice settings. Conversely, job satisfaction was positively correlated with the expected age of retirement. The percentage of time spent in research and administration was also positively correlated with job satisfaction, though additional research in this area is needed to draw meaningful conclusions on this association. Conclusion The results support the conceptual framework, which suggests that early career physical therapists, motivated by high amounts of educational debt, may choose more financially advantageous practice settings and increased working hours to the detriment of job satisfaction. Impact High levels of job satisfaction among physical therapists are correlated with low levels of educational debt, working 45 hours or less per week, a longer time horizon until retirement, and practice settings other than home health and skilled nursing facilities. * Context.--Pathology training is focused on the attainment of clinical, diagnostic, and administrative skills. Preparation for employment search and the interview process are often neglected. Given that a near majority of pathology trainees in theUnited States are graduates of foreign medical schools, training in the job search and interview process according to local customs, norms, and expectations has greater salience for individuals new to the United States. Objective.--To offer perspectives on 2 components of the job search process: (1) finding a suitable job opening in academic and private practice settings and (2) preparing for an interview. We have provided a set of common interview questions and suggested preparatory methodology. The differences in the process and expectations in academic settings and private practice operations are highlighted. Engaging in the job search process early and networking are emphasized. We have also suggested approaches for pathology teachers and mentors in guiding trainees in a job search and preparation for an interview. Data Sources.--The information and opinions expressed in this communication are based on the personal experiences of 4 senior pathologists in academic and private practice settings. Conclusions.--Start networking early. Leverage contacts with teachers, attending pathologists, senior residents, and people at national meetings to locate appropriate job opportunities. Objectives When it comes to controlling workplace transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, different workplaces and industrial sectors face different challenges, both in terms of likely transmission routes and which control measures can be practically, economically, and effectively implemented. This article considers a large body of research in the United Kingdom across different work sectors and time points during the COVID-19 pandemic to better understand mitigation measures, challenges to mitigating the risk of SARS-COV-2 transmission, knowledge gaps, and barriers and enablers to control viral transmission. Methods Data is drawn from 2 phases of research. Phase 1 gathered data from an interactive workshop (April 2022) where PROTECT researchers working across 8 work sectors shared knowledge and expertise from research conducted between 2020 and 2022. Phase 2 revisited 6 of these sectors to explore participants' views on the "living with COVID" phase of the pandemic (February–October 2022) through qualitative interviews. Results Our findings emphasise the importance of considering the characteristics of each work sector (and their sub-sectors), relative to the physical workplace and workforce, the ways organisations operate, and how they interact with the public. Study findings show that participant's views and organisational practices changed quickly and significantly over the course of the pandemic. Most participants initially perceived that the majority of risk mitigations would remain in place for the foreseeable future. However, following the change in Government Guidance towards "living with COVID", most mitigation measures were quickly removed and it had become necessary for sectors/organisations to restore normal operations, thereby treating the COVID-19 virus like any other illness, while remaining prepared for future health emergencies that may arise. Conclusion We suggest that national policy makers and organisational leaders remain mindful of the lessons learned and knowledge gained at all levels (national, regional, local, organisational, and individual) during the COVID-19 pandemic. We make recommendations in support of recovery as sectors/organisations continue "living with COVID" and other respiratory diseases; balanced with longer term planning for the next public health crisis. We report the results of a mapping exercise by the European Federation of Nurses (EFN) on challenges and solutions related to violence against nurses. This is an issue of growing international concern, with the problem accentuated during and following the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a cross-sectional observational design, an online questionnaire was distributed among 35 national nurses' associations across Europe in March 2021. Face validity was achieved through an expert panel. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis, including counts, percentages, and tabulation. Qualitative data analysis followed thematic synthesis techniques. Three main findings are noted. First, violent incidents against nurses are under-reported due to fear of victimization, employer discouragement, and the perception that reporting will not make any difference. Second, perpetrators of violent acts extend beyond patients and families to include health professionals of different ranks. Third, violent incidences have a significant adverse effect on nurses' health and retention, leading to nurses reducing their working hours or opting for part-time work. Violence against nurses is an expression of a broader problem that is rooted in the failure to recognize and manage violence at the level of the healthcare organization, and the absence of appropriate legislation to maintain minimum standards of safe working environments. This is partly the result of inadequate European Union-wide legislation targeting workplace violence in the health professions. Nurses need more institutional support through dedicated funding aimed at targeted interventions, more legislative commitment to ratify policies against discrimination, and an opportunity to voice the needs to the appropriate policymakers with the ability to bring significant change to existing conditions. Given the severity of the situation, inaction could lead to irreplaceable damage to the nursing workforce, compounding pressures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare workers experience moral injury (MI), a violation of their moral code due to circumstances beyond their control. MI threatens the healthcare workforce in all settings and leads to medical errors, depression/anxiety, and personal and occupational dysfunction, significantly affecting job satisfaction and retention. This article aims to differentiate concepts and define causes surrounding MI in healthcare. A narrative literature review was performed using SCOPUS, CINAHL, and PubMed for peer-reviewed journal articles published in English between 2017 and 2023. Search terms included "moral injury" and "moral distress," identifying 249 records. While individual risk factors predispose healthcare workers to MI, root causes stem from healthcare systems. Accumulation of moral stressors and potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) (from administrative burden, institutional betrayal, lack of autonomy, corporatization of healthcare, and inadequate resources) result in MI. Individuals with MI develop moral resilience or residue, leading to burnout, job abandonment, and post-traumatic stress. Healthcare institutions should focus on administrative and climate interventions to prevent and address MI. Management should ensure autonomy, provide tangible support, reduce administrative burden, advocate for diversity of clinical healthcare roles in positions of interdisciplinary leadership, and communicate effectively. Introduction: Home visitor well-being is integral to delivering effective home visiting services and a core component of successful home visiting program implementation. While burnout (BO), compassion fatigue (CF), and compassion satisfaction (CS) have been studied extensively in physicians, nurses, and other health providers, little is known about the correlates of these phenomena in home visitors. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined demographic characteristics (age, race, gender), health and personal experiences (anxiety, physical health, and adverse childhood experiences), and job-related factors (caseload, role certainty, job satisfaction) as correlates of BO, CF and CS among a sample of 75 home visitors employed across six MIECHV-funded agencies in New York State. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize our sample; linear regressions were employed to investigate correlates with outcomes of interest. Results: Anxiety was significantly and positively associated with BO (β = 2.5, p < 0.01) and CF (β = 3.08, p < 0.01). Overall job satisfaction was significantly and inversely associated with BO only (β = -0.11, p < 0.001). Participants who identified as white were less likely to report higher levels of CS relative to non-white counterparts (β = -4.65, p = 0.014). Examinations of specific aspects of job satisfaction revealed significant associations between satisfaction with workplace operating conditions, nature of the work, and contingent rewards and select outcomes of interest. Discussion: Prioritizing preventive measures that target correlates of BO and CF, such as higher levels of anxiety and lower levels of job satisfaction – particularly operating conditions – may improve workforce well-being, continuity of service delivery, and ultimately quality of care provided to clients. Significance: What is known about this subject? Burnout (BO) and compassion fatigue (CF) pose serious threats to the home visiting workforce and quality of service delivery. Little is known about the relationships between demographic characteristics, health, child adversity, and job-related factors and outcomes of BO, CF, and compassion satisfaction (CS). Method: Eleven mental health professionals from a range of disciplines took part in the study. The 11 participants completed an online questionnaire and the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) scale, which measures levels of compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Three of them also took part in an individual semi-structured interview. Findings: Participants felt hopeful and optimistic about the future of the service, felt supported by managers and peers, and wanted to enhance their skills to meet children and young people's increasingly complex needs within the constraints of a service offering brief interventions. Participants displayed high levels of compassion satisfaction, low levels of burnout and particularly low levels of secondary traumatic stress. Conclusion: Emotionally supportive leadership, a culture of continuous learning and peer support may reduce the uncertainty felt by community mental health staff about a new service and create optimism about the future, which may in turn contribute to workplace well-being. The Nexus vision of simultaneously transforming health professions education and healthcare delivery to achieve Triple (now Quadruple) Aim outcomes was first articulated in the 2012 proposal and funding of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (National Center). Over the past decade, the National Center has worked with over 70 sites implementing large scale and practice-based interprofessional practice and education (IPE) programs. Because what is needed to implement the Nexus to achieve Quadruple Aim outcomes was not well understood in 2012, the National Center took a social innovations and developmental evaluation approach. This iterative method led to the development of the National Center NexusIPE™ Learning Model that adapts the 3-P high-level stages (Presage, Process, and Product), proposed as a framework for IPE by Barr and colleagues. National Center collaborators' lessons learned about the Nexus vision are highlighted in this issue and provide real-world examples of elements of the NexusIPETM Learning Model. Reflecting on ten years of experience, the National Center leaders recognize the need for Nexus transformation and the relevance of the NexusIPETM Learning Model today as education and health systems grapple with mounting workforce challenges. Increasing global migration necessitates a larger, more diverse, and more culturally responsive nursing workforce. If health care organizations are to foster a culture of inclusion, they must employ strategies to retain the current nursing workforce and prepare for greater diversity in the future. Nurses are leaving the profession for many reasons. Nurses report too much stress and overwork, along with not feeling valued in their roles. Nursing leadership must work to address retention of the current workforce and implement additional strategies to support long-term pipelines for more diverse nurses. Interactive workshops and mentoring focused on foundational definitions and concepts are strategies to increase retention and preparation for future recruitment. This article discusses strategies to foster a greater sense of belonging in the workplace for all nurses. This article also discusses strategies that can be useful in retaining a nursing workforce and preparing for the future nursing workforce by fostering a culture of responsiveness that encourages a sense of belonging for all nurses. Background: Nurses have primary responsibility for many of the care processes and interventions intended to improve patients' health during hospital stays. Accordingly, missed nursing care can negatively impact patient safety and lead to negative clinical outcomes. Missed nursing care is standard care that is not completed, incomplete, or seriously delayed. Purpose: There is scant literature on nurse-reported missed care (NRMC) in Singapore. Identifying the prevalence of, types of, and reasons for missed care, including staff-related factors, is imperative to understanding the implications of missed care and identifying opportunities for improvement. Methods: Ours is a correlation study of NRMC using convenience sampling. Nurses working on all inpatient units in an acute care hospital in Singapore were recruited to complete the MISSCARE survey, a quantitative tool measuring missed nursing care and the reasons for it. Descriptive statistics was applied to analyze demographics, types of NRMC, and reasons for NRMC. The Pearson χ2 test was used to analyze the correlation between demographics and satisfaction variables and NRMC. Results: A total of 314 participants out of 1,944 eligible nurses (response rate, 16%) were recruited. The most commonly reported missed care activities were setting up meals for patients who can feed themselves (87.3%), ambulation (70.1%), attending interdisciplinary conferences (64.3%), providing emotional support to patients and/or family (58%), and turning patients every two hours (56.7%). The most cited reasons for missed care were inadequate number of staff (84.4%), caregiver not in unit or unavailable (76.1%), heavy admission and discharge activity (75.5%), urgent patient situations (74.2%), and unexpected rise in patient volume and/or acuity (73.2%). Younger age, greater experience in role and current unit, inadequate staffing and teamwork, low satisfaction with current role and with being a nurse, and planning to leave the current position were factors significantly associated with greater levels of missed care. Conclusion: This study demonstrated evidence of NRMC and its associated factors within the local setting. In addition to expanding nursing resources, analyzing nursing work processes, providing support for younger nurses, and improving nursing satisfaction are possible mitigating factors in preventing missed care. Strategies targeting workforce and resource management, greater support for new and younger nurses, and job satisfaction should be considered to address missed care. Not having enough nurses to care for patients is a public health crisis that requires immediate and scoping interventions. Since the start of the pandemic, there has been a near-constant supply of data collected to help understand the impacts on the nursing workforce. As the world shifts from an acute to chronic phase of the pandemic, recent numbers show that the nursing workforce is beginning to move toward a new equilibrium. This article shares the latest data across themes that represent the most challenging issues facing nurses: safe staffing, retention and turnover, well-being, compensation and reimbursement, trust culture, and the nursing pipeline. Policy PointsThe United States public health system relies on an inadequate and inefficient mix of federal, state, and local funding.Various state‐based initiatives suggest that a promising path to bipartisan support for increased public health funding is to gain the support of local elected officials by providing state (and federal) funding directly to local health departments, albeit with performance strings attached.Even with more funding, we will not solve the nation's public health workforce crisis until we make public health a more attractive career path with fewer bureaucratic barriers to entry. To rebuild that workforce, the American Rescue Plan (ARP) appropriated $7.66 billion to help create 100,000 new public health jobs. As part of this initiative, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) distributed roughly $2 billion to state, local, tribal, and territorial health agencies for use between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2023. At the same time, several states have enacted (or are considering enacting) initiatives to increase state funding for their local health departments with the goal of ensuring that these departments can deliver a core set of services to all residents. The differences in approach between this first round of ARP funding and theseparate state initiatives offer an opportunity to compare, contrast, and suggest lessons learned. Methods: After interviewing leaders at the CDC and other experts on the nation's public health workforce, we visited five states (Kentucky, Indiana, Mississippi, New York, and Washington) to examine, by means of interviews and documents, the implementation and impact of both the ARP workforce funds as well as the state‐based initiatives. Findings: Three themes emerged. First, states are not spending the CDC workforce funding in a timely fashion; although the specifics vary, there are several organizational, political, and bureaucratic obstacles. Second, the state‐based initiatives follow different political paths but rely on the same overarching strategy: gain the support of local elected officials by providing funding directly to local health departments, albeit with performance strings attached. These state initiatives offer their federal counterparts a political roadmap toward a more robust model of public health funding. Third, even with increased funding, we will not meet the nation's public health workforce challenges until we make public health a more attractive career path (with higher pay, improved working conditions, and more training and promotion opportunities) with fewer bureaucratic barriers to entry (most importantly, with less reliance on outdated civil service rules). Conclusion: The politics of public health requires a closer look at the role played by county commissioners, mayors, and other local elected officials. There is ample evidence that doctors frequently miss meals at work, which negatively impacts concentration, decision‐making and overall patient care. Junior doctors are particularly vulnerable given their heavy workload. We report on the impact of a pilot programme supporting home‐based meal preparation on the dietary habits and energy levels of interns at a tertiary hospital and demonstrate this is one strategy healthcare organisations can adopt to promote a healthier workforce. Approximately 6–9% of trainees will have performance issues of variable degrees with 3–5% of trainees struggling to complete their training and requiring additional targeted time or an extension of training. Some even leave the profession. The environment is complex, often chaotic and overstretched, and, now, made more difficult due to the impact of COVID-19 on medical training. Addressing learning and implementing new behaviours is a challenge and important, as there are still 'never events', and medical errors sadly can include wilful neglect and assault. Such traumatic experiences can be a huge drain of resources for faculty, who often feel underprepared to deal with such occurrences. Failure to address them can lead to bitterness and loss of the medical workforce, rarely suicide, huge remedial costs, and legal challenges to educational institutions and employers. The purpose of this paper is to gain an understanding of why trainees struggle and/or fail and to be able to analyse the causes of poor performance; to know how to pick up these issues early and raise them; and to ultimately deal effectively with performance problems to get a good outcome for the trainees, patients, and institutions.
