Metal halide semiconductors have huge potential on X‐ray detection, due to their high atomic number, adjustable photoluminescence wavelength, superior stability, and simple fabrication process. Here, cesium lead halide nanocrystals (CsPbX3 NCs) are fabricated on paper substrate as scintillator screen for the first time. By means of all‐solution processed spray‐coating method with optimization of polymethyl methacrylate, large‐area (>600 cm2) and low‐cost (0.0975 dollar cm−2) flexible scintillator screens are obtained with high resolution (≈5 lp mm−1), low detection limit (2.97 μGy s−1), high light yield (≈30000 photons/MeV), and fast response speed (<15 ms). The screen can achieve high‐resolution X‐ray non‐distortion imaging for non‐planar objects and realize battery check and safety monitoring at a broad range of photon energy (10–160 keV). In addition, real‐time dose rates can be easily estimated through counting the luminous arcs of the designed visible indicator. More important, the screen shows remarkable tolerance to high‐dose X‐ray radiation (tolerance over 60 Gyair continuous radiation with only 3% performance degradation), water soaking (2000 h), and conventional storage (over 300 days without apparent deterioration under ambient conditions). A paper scintillator, which is composed of an organic scintillator encapsulated in silica nanoparticles adsorbed on three types of micrometer-size silica fine powder (scintillator–silica FP), was prepared by a paper making method. The scintillator–silica FP was found to be distributed throughout the paper scintillator, as shown in its emission images. Surface photoluminescence spectra depended on the amount of scintillator–silica FP and were assigned to the radioluminescence excited upon irradiation with β -particles of 45Ca. The onset channels of the pulse height spectra of 3H, 63Ni, 14C, 45Ca, 204Tl, and 32P indicated their dependence on linear energy from 18.6 to 1711 keV using the H mode in LSC-7400 for the paper scintillator to detect their maximum β -particles energies. The paper scintillator could also detect α -particles from 211At, and its pulse height spectrum was wider than that of a liquid scintillator (LS). Radon gas in air was collected using a gas sampler with the paper scintillator, and radiation from daughter nuclides was detected for 10 days. The adsorption/absorption of tritiated water onto/into the paper scintillator after dipping, dropping, and immersing the paper scintillator into tritiated water led to the detection of β -particles under different conditions of tritiated water for determining whether the radioactivity in the solution, is high or low. The paper scintillator smeared with tritiated contaminants detected tritium without requiring an LS, which is used in a smear paper. • A paper scintillator could be prepared by a simple paper making method. • Aerosols containing the solid decay products from radon gas in air could be detected on the paper scintillator. • Tritium in a liquid solution was adsorbed onto and absorbed into the paper scintillator. • The paper scintillator wiped 3H-ATP-contaminants detected 3H without a liquid scintillator. • α -Particles from 211At were simply detected using the paper scintillator. Liquid scintillator (LS)-encapsulated silica was prepared by the sol–gel method and then was added dropwise onto a wipe paper to form a paper scintillator. First, the efficiencies of wipe were determined for both the paper scintillator and the wipe paper using a liquid scintillation counter (LSC). The efficiencies of wipe using the paper scintillator and the wipe paper were 88 and 36 %, respectively. The detection efficiencies were 5.5 % for the paper scintillator, 46 % for the wipe paper using an LS and 0.08 % for the 3H/14C survey meter, respectively, compared with that of a melt-on scintillator of 47 %. Second, an 3H contaminant on the paper scintillator was successfully detected using a photomultiplier without an LSC or an 3H/14C survey meter. A time‐varying lighting regime was formulated based on the action spectrum of the circadian and photopic lights. Using LED panels, the regime was implemented, tested and evaluated in classroom environment. The circadian to photopic ratio C/P was identified as one of the key parameters along with standard photometric and spectrometric quantities. The circadian rhythm of the human body as decomposed into time intervals of the day. By the continuous monitoring of the light output from the LED panels, we obtained instantaneous values and variation in the parameters, such as luminous flux, correlated color temperatures, color rendering indices, luminous efficiency and CS value. Based on these measurement data, we derived the variation of color temperature versus that of black body radiation and that of the color coordinates of the sun light. we also calculated the circadian stimulus curve and found it consistent with the one suggested by Mark Rea et al. Radon-resistant materials are of great importance for High Background Radiation Areas. Depending on the radon diffusion coefficient, waterproofing and radon-resistant materials with thicknesses ranging from a few microns to several centimeters are used in various parts of the world. The cost of installation of an effective radon mitigation system varied with material properties, i.e., thickness and diffusion coefficient. The present study is concerned with the measurement of the radon diffusion coefficient through single and multilayer homogeneous and heterogeneous stacks of various waterproofing materials. One, two, and three layers of polyethylene, printing paper, mica sheets, PVC sheets, Mylar sheets and aluminum foil of varying thicknesses are tested for determination of diffusion length by the two-chamber method and the active scintillation radon monitor. The radon diffusion coefficient of materials varies from 10-13m²/s to 10-8m²/s for PVC sheet to paper sheet when a single layer is used and 10-11 m²/s to 10-13 m²/s for aluminum and polyethylene sheets in multilayer stack arrangement. The radon diffusion coefficient for most of the materials reduces with increasing layers in the stack. Atmospheric turbulence causes transmitted light to fade randomly, which results in irradiance scintillation fluctuations in the received signal and significantly affects the quality of wireless optical communication systems. In this paper, we investigate the propagation characteristics of a monochromatic light-emitting diode (LED) light beam through weak-to-strong turbulence. Considering the spatial incoherence of a monochromatic LED light source, the emitted light field of a monochromatic LED light source is represented by a random field multiplied by a deterministic field that follows a Gaussian distribution. Then, based on the extended-Rytov theory, a closed expression for the irradiance scintillation index under weak-to-strong turbulence is derived. In addition, the expression for the fading probability governed by the Gamma–Gamma model is given. Finally, the effects of near-earth atmospheric refractive index structural parameters, signal propagation distances, and working light wavelengths on propagation characteristics of the LED-based VLC system are simulated and compared with those of the laser-based one. The results theoretically confirm that laser light sources are more susceptible to atmospheric turbulence along the propagation path than monochromatic LED light sources. High‐resolution X‐ray imaging is increasingly required for medical diagnosis and large‐area detection. However, the issues of scattering and optical crosstalk are limiting the spatial resolution of the indirect X‐ray imaging. In this study, a feasible and efficient strategy is proposed to in situ synthesize flexible Cs3Cu2I5:2%In+@paper as a superior scintillator film, which can be scaled up to an ultra‐large area of 4800 cm2. The as‐obtained Cs3Cu2I5:2%In+@paper performs a fascinating photoluminescence quantum efficiency up to 88.14%, a steady state light yield of 70169 photons/MeV, and spatial resolution of 15 lp mm−1. Moreover, the suppressed physical scattering and optical crosstalk of the corresponding film are demonstrated. High-energy radiation detection and imaging technology has significant applications in high-energy physics research, medical imaging, and industrial monitoring. Lead-free metal halides exhibit exceptional potential for conducting indirect detection of high-energy radiation due to their characteristics of low toxicity, strong stability, high light yield, and large Stokes shift. This paper reviews the most recent advances in lead-free metal halide scintillator materials for X-ray imaging. Subsequently, it lists the most important parameters of scintillator performance and introduces the production procedures for single crystal, powder, and nanocrystal scintillators. Furthermore, it discusses the manufacturing of scintillator films with improved performance, focusing on large-area flexible scintillator films and the coupling with microstructures. Dual-energy computed tomography (CT) provides a better material classification capability than traditional CT. A scintillator is an essential component that determines the optical resolution, detective quantum efficiency, and energy separation of the dual-layer dual-energy CT system. In this paper, we propose a new dual-layer scintillator combination composed of CsI:Tl and LYSO:Ce for dual-energy CT imaging. The x-ray attenuation physical process of CsI:Tl and LYSO:Ce combination is simulated on Geant4. The energy distribution and luminescence of different thicknesses of the scintillator combination are investigated by simulation experiments. Then, the optimal thicknesses of the combination are designed based on simulation results. Furthermore, a dual-layer dual-energy CT system using the scintillator combination is built, and practical dual-energy imaging experiments are implemented in the system. Simulation results indicate that the CsI:Tl and LYSO:Ce combination can effectively realize dual-energy detection. The optimal thickness is 100 μm for CsI:Tl and 500 μm for LYSO:Ce. Practical experiments show that the dual-energy CT system using the CsI:Tl and LYSO:Ce combination has low noise. Materials of the metal mixture sample and the igneous rock sample are correctly separated using the dual-energy data obtained by the CsI:Tl and LYSO:Ce combination. Therefore, the CsI:Tl and LYSO:Ce combination is expected to be used in dual-energy CT imaging studies of complex materials, such as metals, bones, and rocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The AMoRE-II experiment will search for the 0vßß decay of 100Mo nuclei using molybdate crystal scintillators, operating at milli-Kelvin (mK) temperatures, with a total of 80 kg of 100Mo. The background goal for the experiment is 10-4 counts/keV/kg/year in the region of interest around the 0vßß decay Q-value of 3,034 keV. To achieve this level, the rate of background signals arising from emissions produced by decays of radioactive impurities in the detector and shielding materials must be strictly controlled. To do this, concentrations of such impurities are measured and are controlled through materials selection and purification. In this paper, we present the new multi-wavelength dataset of aerosol extinction profiles, which are retrieved from the averaged transmittance spectra by the Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars instrument aboard the Envisat satellite. Using monthly and zonally averaged transmittances as a starting point for the retrievals enables us to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and eliminate possible modulation of transmittance spectra by uncorrected scintillations. The two-step retrieval method is used: the spectral inversion is followed by the vertical inversion. The spectral inversion relies on the removal of contributions from ozone, NO2 , NO3 and Rayleigh scattering from the optical depth spectra for each ray perigee altitude. In the vertical inversion, the profiles of aerosol extinction coefficients at several wavelengths are retrieved from the collection of slant aerosol optical depth profiles. The retrieved aerosol extinction profiles (FMI-GOMOSaero dataset v1) are provided in the altitude range 10–40 km at wavelengths of 400, 440, 452, 470, 500, 525, 550, 672 and 750 nm for the whole GOMOS operating period from August 2002 to March 2012. Extensive intercomparisons of the retrieved FMI-GOMOSaero aerosol profiles with aerosol profile data from other satellite instruments at several wavelengths have been performed. It is found that the average difference between FMI-GOMOSaero and other datasets is within 20 %–40 % in the lower and middle stratosphere, the standard deviation is ∼ 20 %–50 %, and the correlation coefficient of the time series is 0.65–0.85. The created FMI-GOMOSaero dataset can be used in merged datasets of stratospheric aerosols. It might be also used as a priori information for satellite retrievals during 2002–2012. In recent years, the development of new scintillation materials with red and near-infrared light emission has had significant advantages based on the development of an avalanche photodiode with high quantum yield. This study used a hydrothermal method to synthesize rare-earth-doped Cs2NaScCl6 crystals, in which a red emission of Cs2NaScCl6:Sm was investigated with high X-ray sensitivity and low detection limit. In addition, a tunable wavelength range of radioluminescence can be achieved, in which a near-white light emission can be generated by precisely controlling the proportion of Sm3+ and Tb3+ doping concentrations. Meanwhile, a Cs2NaScCl6:7%Sm scintillation film has been successfully prepared by direct coating with a thickness of 150 μm, which achieves a spatial resolution of 11.9 lp mm−1 based on X-ray imaging experiments. The VEGA-3 laser system at the Centro de Láseres Pulsados delivers laser pulses up to 1 PW at 1 Hz repetition rate, focused to intensities up to 2.5 × 10 20 W cm−2. A versatile and compact solid target suitable for up to 0.05 Hz is presented which can operate in the challenging petawatt laser environment close to the laser-plasma interaction. Strips are spooled in a tape target system to deliver a solid density target to the laser focus for every shot. Results are presented for different tape materials and thicknesses, and a shot-to-shot standard deviation of the cut-off energy of 1.5% was obtained for Kapton reinforced aluminium tapes of 9 µ m thickness. Experimental ion spectra are recorded by a Thomson Parabola Ion Spectrometer coupled with a scintillator screen; and an antenna array is used for the characterization of electromagnetic pulses. Fast neutron beams (E n > 1 MeV) are of relevance for many scientific and industrial applications. This paper explores fast neutron production using a TANDEM accelerator at the Legnaro National Laboratories, via an energetic ion beam (90 MeV 14 N ) onto a lithium target. The high energy models for nuclear collision of FLUKA foresee large neutron yields for reactions of this kind. The experiment aimed at validating the expected neutron yields from FLUKA simulations, using two separate and independent set-ups: one based on the multi-foil activation technique, and the other on the time of flight technique, by using liquid scintillator detectors. The results of the experiment show clear agreement of the measured spectra with the FLUKA simulations, both in the shape and the magnitude of the neutron flux at the measured positions. The neutron spectrum is centered around the 8 MeV range with mild tails, and a maximum neutron energy spanning up to 50 MeV. These advantageous results provide a starting point in the development of fast neutron beams based on high energy ion beams from medium-sized accelerator facilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background: Generally, in nuclear medicine and nuclear power plants, energy spectrum measurements and radioactive nuclide identification are required for evaluation of strong radiation fields to ensure nuclear safety and security; thereby, damage is prevented to nuclear facilities caused by natural disasters or the criminal smuggling of nuclear materials. High count rates can lead to signal accumulation, negatively affecting the performance of gamma spectrometers, and in severe cases, even damaging the detectors. Higher pulse throughput with better energy resolution is the ultimate goal of a gamma-ray spectrometer. Traditionally, pileup pulses, which cause dead time and affect throughput, are rejected to maintain good energy resolution. (2) Method: In this paper, an ultra-throughput boost (UTB) off-line processing method was used to improve the throughput and reduce the pileup effect of the spectrometer. Firstly, by fitting the impulse signal of the detector, the response matrix was built by the functional model of a dual exponential tail convolved with the Gaussian kernel; then, a quadratic programming method based on a non-negative least squares (NNLS) algorithm was adopted to solve the constrained optimization problem for the inversion. (3) Results: Both the simulated and experimental results of the UTB method show that most of the impulses in the pulse sequence from the scintillator detector were restored to δ-like pulses, and the throughput of the UTB method for the NaI(Tl) spectrometer reached 207 kcps with a resolution of 7.71% @661.7 keV. A reduction was also seen in the high energy pileup phenomenon. (4) Conclusions: We conclude that the UTB method can restore individual and piled-up pulses to δ-like sequences, effectively boosting pulse throughput and suppressing high-energy tailing and sum peaks caused by the pileup effect at the cost of a slight loss in energy resolution. Angular resolution is crucial for the detailed study of gamma-ray sources and current Cherenkov telescopes (e.g., HESS, MAGIC, and VERITAS) that operate below tens of TeV. Several gamma-ray sources with a photon energy larger than 100 TeV have been revealed by the LHAASO in recent years; the angular resolution of the LHAASO is around  0.3 ∘ . A gamma-ray detector with an angular resolution of less than  0.1 ∘  operating beyond 100 TeV is needed to study the detailed morphology of ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources further. The cost-effectiveness is crucial for such large-area detectors. In this paper, the impact of telescope aperture, field of view, pixel size, optical point spread function, and signal integration time window on angular resolution is studied. Source localisation and real-time dose verification are at the forefront of medical research in brachytherapy, an oncological radiotherapy procedure based on radioactive sources implanted in the patient body. The ORIGIN project aims to respond to this medical community's need by targeting the development of a multi-point dose mapping system based on fibre sensors integrating a small volume of scintillating material into the tip and interfaced with silicon photomultipliers operated in counting mode. In this paper, a novel method for the selection of the optimal silicon photomultipliers to be used is presented, as well as a laboratory characterisation based on dosimetric figures of merit. More specifically, a technique exploiting the optical cross-talk to maintain the detector linearity in high-rate conditions is demonstrated. Lastly, it is shown that the ORIGIN system complies with the TG43-U1 protocol in high and low dose rate pre-clinical trials with actual brachytherapy sources, an essential requirement for assessing the proposed system as a dosimeter and comparing the performance of the system prototype against the ORIGIN project specifications. We demonstrate the application of fluorescence optical fiber coupled to a telecom grade fiber as a sensor for alpha particles using alpha-specific ZnS(Ag) scintillation materials whose wavelength is down-shifted into a low-loss region of the telecom grade fiber transmission band. Telecom-grade fiber optics offer a solution for sensing alpha radiation in deep repositories and cask storage for radioactive materials due to the stability of SiO2 under normal environmental conditions and its relative radiation hardness at low radiation doses. Long-term nuclear waste storage facilities require sensors for the detection of leakage of radioactive materials that are maintenance-free, do not require power and can survive with no 'wear out' mechanisms for decades. By accomplishing the wavelength transformation, we maximize efficiencies in the detection of α -particles and signal transport and can detect alpha scintillation at distances on the order of >1 km with a sensor that is ~3% efficient and can be easily scaled as a sensor array. This paper describes the construction and testing of the sensor including manufacture of the controlled thickness films, verification of the wavelength shift from 450 to 620 nm and optimization of the sensitivity as a function of thickness. We also model the relative sensitivity of the film as a function of film thickness, and we demonstrate a signal-to-noise ratio of 10 at a range of greater than 1 km. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The International Monitoring System includes a network of radionuclide detectors operated around the world monitoring for nuclear explosions. A key aspect of the International Monitoring System is the detection of radioxenon with a network of stations and laboratories. Beta-gamma detectors are utilized extensively for the detection of radioxenon, and the beta detection is primarily performed with a plastic scintillator cell. Two areas of improvement for plastic scintillator are the sample carry-over ("memory effect") and energy resolution. While the scintillator can be coated to remove the memory effect, the energy resolution must be improved with a different detector material. Silicon is the current leading candidate for the future beta cell material due to the much-improved energy resolution compared to plastic scintillators (factor of ~ 3x). PNNL is developing a silicon beta cell for use as a potential modular replacement within Xenon International (a next generation radioxenon detection system currently undergoing acceptance testing for potential inclusion in the International Monitoring System). The beta cell utilizes four different silicon detectors to create an active volume for the radioxenon within an outer gas cell. Since there are four separate beta signals (compared to one for plastic scintillators), data acquisition modifications are required. The paper presents the results of a comprehensive study of the structural-phase composition, morphology, optical, luminescent, and scintillation characteristics of thick ZnO films fabricated by magnetron sputtering. By using a hot ceramic target, extremely rapid growth (~50 µm/h) of ZnO microfilms more than 100 µm thick was performed, which is an advantage for the industrial production of scintillation detectors. The effects of post-growth treatment of the fabricated films in low-temperature plasma were studied and a significant improvement in their crystalline and optical quality was shown. As a result, the films exhibit intense near-band-edge luminescence in the near-UV region with a decay time of <1 ns. Plasma treatment also allowed to significantly weaken the visible defect luminescence excited in the near-surface regions of the films. A study of the luminescence mechanisms in the synthesized films revealed that their near-band-edge emission at room temperature is formed by phonon replicas of free exciton recombination emission. Particularly, the first phonon replica plays the main role in the case of optical excitation, while upon X-ray excitation, the second phonon replica dominates. It was also shown that the green band peaking at ~510 nm (2.43 eV) is due to surface emission centers, while longer wavelength (>550 nm) green-yellow emission originates mainly from bulk parts of the films. This paper presents the Czochralski growth of SrI2:Eu scintillation crystals. SrI2:Eu is one among the brightest recently discovered scintillators with an excellent energy resolution for spectroscopic identification of radioactive isotopes. The Czochralski crystal growth method is optimal from the point of scaling up of crystal production with minimal investment into upgrade of crystal growth equipment. In this paper, SrI2:Eu crystals with the diameter of up to 50 mm were produced by the developed process based on the Czochralski method. The crystals are prone to cracking, and thermal fields in the crystallizer still should be optimized. Nevertheless, the scintillation parameters of detectors cut from the grown crystals are similar to that in detectors fabricated by the conventional Bridgman–Stockbarger technology. The Eu2+ activator concentration across the crystals is uniform within 5%, as well as the energy resolution, which ranges within 3.6% ± 0.1% at 662 keV. Also, the decay times under X-rays and nonproportionality of scintillation light yield on excitation energy in the range of 31–1274 keV have been determined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When using liquid scintillator detectors to measure the neutron emission spectrum from fusion plasmas, the problem of pile-up distortion can be significant. Because of the large neutron rates encountered in many fusion experiments, some pile-up distortion can remain even after applying traditional pile-up elimination methods, which alters the shape of the measured light-yield spectrum and influences the spectroscopic analysis. Particularly, pile-up events appear as a high-energy tail in the measured light-yield spectrum, which obfuscates the contribution that supra-thermal ions make to the energy spectrum. It is important to understand the behavior of such "fast ions" in fusion plasmas, and it is hence desirable to be able to measure their contribution to the neutron spectrum as accurately as possible. This paper presents a technique for incorporating distortion from undetected pile-up events into the analysis of the light-yield spectrum, hence compensating for pile-up distortion. The spectral contribution from undetected pile-up events is determined using Monte Carlo methods and is included in the spectroscopic study as a pile-up component. The method is applied to data from an NE213 scintillator detector at JET and validated by comparing with results from the time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR, which is not susceptible to pile-up distortion. Based on the results, we conclude that the suggested analysis method helps counteract the problem of pile-up effects and improves the possibilities for extracting accurate fast-ion information from the light-yield spectrum. A new fibre-sampling dual-readout calorimeter prototype has been qualified on beam at two facilities (DESY and CERN) using electrons from 1 to 100 GeV. The prototype was designed to almost fully contain electromagnetic showers and a central module (highly granular readout) was equipped with 320 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) spaced by 2 mm and individually read out. The test beams performed in 2021, allowed to qualify the readout boards used to operate the SiPMs, to define the calibration procedure and to measure the light yield for scintillating and Cherenkov signals produced by the shower development. This paper reports the first results obtained with the highly granular readout and discusses the ongoing R&D to address some open questions concerning the mechanical integration and the scalable readout scheme that will allow to build and operate the next prototype designed for hadronic showers containment. To address the problem that the energy response of the plastic scintillator detector is very low in the low energy range, this paper proposes a method to optimize the energy response characteristics by combining the CaWO4 energy compensation layer and the genetic algorithm. First, the energy deposition of X/γ rays in a plastic scintillator with a CaWO4 energy compensation layer is modeled and simulated using MCNP software; then, the thickness and hollow radius of the compensation layer are optimized by using genetic algorithm to run this simulation program. The results show that after adding a CaWO4 compensation layer with a thickness of 45 µm and a hollow radius of 1 cm at the front of the plastic scintillator, its energy response characteristics are consistent in the range of 50 keV to 1.5 MeV, which meets the requirement of IEC 61584:2001 for the energy response coefficient less than ±30%. Scintillators play an important role in radiation detection and imaging. Thallium-doped cesium iodide (CsI:Tl) and sodium iodide (NaI:Tl) are two of the major scintillators that have been used for many applications for many decades. In this paper, we will present an improved scintillation performance of Bridgman method-grown CsI(Tl) and NaI(Tl) crystals developed by Xtallized Intelligence, Inc. (XI, Inc.), and we will compare the performance with commercially available CsI:Tl and NaI:Tl. In a preliminary testing using MicroFJ−60035−TSV silicon photomultipliers (ON Semiconductor), the newly developed and improved 12.5 × 12.5 × 6 mm3 CsI:Tl crystal has shown an energy resolution of 4.8% (FWHM) at 662 keV, compared to 7.2% obtained by a commercially available CsI:Tl with a size of 12.5 × 12.5 × 25 mm3. The energy resolution of 5.4% (FWHM) at 662 keV is obtained for the newly improved NaI:Tl crystal, compared to 7% obtained by a commercially available ∅1″ × 1″ NaI(Tl). The comparison of the photo peak channel locations shows that the improvements in both CsI:Tl and NaI:Tl, developed by XI, Inc., have produced much larger signal amplitudes (roughly double), when compared to the commercially available CsI(Tl) and NaI:Tl. Neutron diffraction beamlines have traditionally relied on deploying large detector arrays of 3He tubes or neutron‐sensitive scintillators coupled with photomultipliers to efficiently probe crystallographic and microstructure information of a given material. Given the large upfront cost of custom‐made data acquisition systems and the recent scarcity of 3He, new diffraction beamlines or upgrades to existing ones demand innovative approaches. This paper introduces a novel Timepix3‐based event‐mode imaging neutron diffraction detector system as well as first results of a silicon powder diffraction measurement made at the HIPPO neutron powder diffractometer at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Notably, these initial measurements were conducted simultaneously with the 3He array on HIPPO, enabling direct comparison. Data reduction for this type of data was implemented in the MAUD code, enabling Rietveld analysis. Results from the Timepix3‐based setup and HIPPO were benchmarked against McStas simulations, showing good agreement for peak resolution. With further development, systems such as the one presented here may substantially reduce the cost of detector systems for new neutron instrumentation as well as for upgrades of existing beamlines. A novel Imaging Neutral Particle Analyzer (INPA) was newly installed in early 2024 to enhance the understanding of fast ion confinement on Large Helical Devices (LHDs). This diagnostic system, based on a magnetic spectrometer using a scintillator, provides energy-resolved radial profiles of confined fast ions by measuring charge-exchanged fast neutrals escaping from the plasma. The system utilizes a 100 nm thick carbon foil to ionize the fast neutrals, subsequently deflecting the ions toward a scintillator via the existing local magnetic field. The fast ion energy and sightline determine the position of the scintillation, while the light intensity depends on the flux of the fast ions. The INPA features two apertures, facilitating effective measurements in both clockwise and counterclockwise magnetic field directions in the LHD. This INPA was designed as a passive measurement system that measures fast ions charge exchange with background neutrals, focusing on perpendicular beam ions from 5 to 100 keV with an energy resolution of about 5.75 keV. This paper describes the details of the design, installation, and the initial results of the INPA on the LHD. This paper presents the effects of background reduction with anticoincidence logical condition between the sum of muon-sensitive large scintillator veto detectors and a germanium detector as well as the time evolution of rejected, muon-induced coincidence gamma spectra. A special attention is paid to neutron effects. The digital event-by-event registration used for data acquisition opens possibilities to study in an off-line mode the variety of effects related to the time structure of all signals registered by detectors. To simulate cracks, a series of slits with depths ranging from 17.2% to 40% of 301 stainless steel (SS) plate thickness are fabricated for this study. The examination includes a microfocus X-ray tube and a digital detector array (DDA) with 75 μm pixel pitch. The basis of this study is to determine the effect of detector scintillator blur, noise and pixelation on the contrast of the resultant radiographic image and, ultimately, on the detectability of a crack. Many crack detectability studies are performed on notched plates rather than true cracks. As the notch width becomes smaller than a pixel, the grey value of the image it generates will be averaged over the entire footprint of the pixel. Therefore, the contrast with neighbouring (no notch) pixels is reduced. This study develops a relationship between the material property, detector parameters, notch geometry and expected contrast that would result from the radiograph image. This relationship can be used as a transfer function towards evaluating the resultant contrast from a notch and extrapolating the results towards a hairline crack. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this work is to investigate, in a wide range of gamma-ray energies, the validity of the "Virtual Point Detector" (VPD) approach to evaluate Full-Energy-Peak Efficiency (FEPE) values for a Cerium-doped Lanthanum Bromide scintillator (LaBr 3 :Ce). With VPD approximation, the detector is assumed equivalent to a virtual point inside the crystal where all the interactions can be considered to occur. The distance of VPD from detector cap is evaluated through experimental point source measurements. The knowledge of the trend of VPD depth as a function of gamma radiation energy allows the evaluation of FEPE values starting from an experimental reference value. The validation of the procedure has been performed by applying the VPD approach to measurement geometries already characterized such as a disk source, an Havar foil irradiated inside a target of a medical cyclotron, and a parallelepided sample geometry, an atmospheric particulate paper filter reduced to 6 cm × 6 cm × 0.7 cm dimensions. A real-time $n/\gamma $ discrimination prototype system based on high-speed waveform sampling and high-performance field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is presented in this paper. In order to accurately record detector signals, a high-speed sampling board with a 14-bit analog-to-digital converter (AD9680) is designed. The BC501A liquid scintillator is employed as the neutron detector, and a discrimination algorithm is implemented in the FPGA of the sampling board. The system is calibrated by 22Na, 137Cs, and 60Co $\gamma $ -sources. A PuC neutron source is used to evaluate the discrimination ability. The figure-of-merit of PuC neutron source is determined to be about 1.005 over an energy range of 0–4000 keVee, which is consistent with the test results of the commercial digitizer, and the false alarm rate of 60Co is 0.19%. This system has been successfully applied for the environmental neutron monitoring experiment during the first commissioning of white neutron source tunnel of China spallation neutron source. This paper demonstrates the improved simulation of a Z-pinch experiment with 2-D magnetohydrodynamic code FLUX-rz developed in RFNC-VNIIEF. A Z-pinch load was nested wire array powered by a helical magnetocumulative generator with the current pulse $I_{\max } \approx 4.2$ MA and effective rise time $\tau \approx 400$ ns. Validation of X-ray spectral measurements carried out with scintillation detector filters pointed out a necessity to take into consideration both the scintillator “dead” layer and oxide films on the aluminum filter surface. This paper is devoted to the current status of the novel fully active 3D (three-dimensional) fine-grained scintillator detector SuperFGD as a main part of the near off-axis detector upgrade program for the T2K experiment. In this paper, we report the first Bi4Ge3O12-based thin-layer alpha radiation detector. The scintillator was immobilized on a fused silica substrate via pulsed laser irradiation of BGO powder consisting of submicron particles. Laser treatment conditions were shown to influence the morphology and kinetic characteristics of the scintillator. The material we prepared ensures a higher stability of detectors to moisture and air in comparison with its commercially available analogs, while offering a comparable or even higher detection efficiency, and can be used in environmental monitoring, including volumetric alpha activity measurements. CsCu2I3 crystal is a promising Cu-based halide material for scintillation detection. In this paper, Na+ ion-doped CsCu2I3 crystals with a size of ϕ12 mm × 50 mm were grown successfully using the vertical Bridgman method, and the properties were systematically investigated. CsCu2I3:Na crystals exhibit yellow light emission peaking at 575 nm and a large Stokes shift of 1.55 eV. Based on the results of the XRD and XPS, the Na+ was introduced successfully. The optical absorption spectra show that the band gap of CsCu2I3 crystals was narrowed when the Na+ was doped. The photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQY) is improved from 16.4% to 19.6%. Finally, the X-ray-induced afterglow, and scintillation (energy resolution, light yield and decay time) under a 137Cs source were measured and discussed. X-ray radiography and computed tomography have become well-established methods for investigation of internal structure of objects and for defectoscopy. Recently, the methods have even been used for in-situ analysis of materials under mechanical loading. Although the techniques would be very suitable for analysis during dynamic events, their application is constrained by typical achievable frame rates. Therefore, fast imaging is usually limited to facilities providing sufficient flux like particle accelerators. In this paper, we test imaging performance of a laboratory-based setup with a high-power X-ray tube, a scintillation panel, and an optical camera. Fast-rotating object and typical specimens for impact testing are irradiated with different power settings and quality of captured images is evaluated and analyzed. It is found out that the system can be successfully used for imaging at several hundred frames per second allowing for inspection of slow impact dynamics experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MALTA is part of the Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel sensors designed in Tower 180 nm CMOS imaging technology. A custom telescope with six MALTA planes has been developed for test beam campaigns at SPS, CERN, with the ability to host several devices under test. The telescope system has a dedicated custom readout, online monitoring integrated into DAQ with realtime hit map, time distribution and event hit multiplicity. It hosts a dedicated fully configurable trigger system enabling to trigger on coincidence between telescope planes and timing reference from a scintillator. The excellent time resolution performance allows for fast track reconstruction, due to the possibility to retain a low hit multiplicity per event which reduces the combinatorics. With the rapid development and utilization of energy by human beings, the preparation of high-efficiency energy storage materials has become a current hot spot. This article mainly studies the mechanical properties of high temperature resistant energy storage dielectric materials and radiation scintillation detection composite materials in bridge construction. In this paper, the dispersion conditions of PBI on carbon nanomaterials were optimized, and PBI derivatives with different chemical structures were synthesized to enhance the interface force between them and carbon nanomaterials. By means of physical blending and chemical reaction grafting, the non-covalent modification or covalent modification of the surface of CNTs and graphene by the polymer was realized. In this paper, FTIR can be used to characterize the molecular structure and segment conformation (crystal phase) of PVDF-based polymers. The attenuated total reflection (ATR) mode of the E55 + FRA106 instrument was used to directly test the polymer film. In this paper, MCNP is used to simulate the interaction between Y-rays and crystal, and the structure of the detector probe is designed, including the selection of crystal material, the design of crystal size, and the requirements of structural packaging. A self-made plastic light cone is used for the coupling between the scintillator and the transmission fiber. With the increase of TPU content, the breakdown strength of the composite film showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. TPUs with three hardnesses all showed the highest breakdown field strength at a content of 3 vol%. The results show that changing the direct connection between the scintillator and the PMT to the light guide connection can effectively improve the light collection efficiency of the detection system. Under the simulation conditions in this article, the increase is about 30%, which is considerable and has a certain energy resolution capability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As part of its research and development activities on high-energy X-ray imaging for nondestructive characterization, the Nuclear Measurement Laboratory has started an upgrade of its imaging system currently implemented at the CEA-Cadarache Center. The goals are to achieve a submillimeter spatial resolution and the ability to perform tomographies on very large objects (more than 100-cm standard concrete or 40-cm steel). This paper presents the results on the detection part of the imaging system. The upgrade of the detection part needs a thorough study of the performance of two detectors: a series of CdTe semiconductor sensors and two arrays of segmented CdWO4 scintillators with different pixel sizes. This paper consists of a quantum accounting diagram analysis coupled with Monte Carlo simulations. The scintillator arrays should be able to detect the millimeter details through 140 cm of concrete but are limited to 120 cm for the smaller ones. CdTe sensors have lower but more homogeneous performance, with a 0.5-mm resolution for 90 cm of concrete. The choice of the detector then depends on the preferred characteristic: the spatial resolution or the use on large volumes. The combination of the features of the source and the studies on the detectors gives the expected performance of the whole equipment, in terms of signal-over-noise ratio, spatial resolution, and acquisition time. Neutron imaging is a powerful tool for observing the internal structure of an object without destroying the object. Neutron imaging (neutron radiography) is a prominent application of neutrons but still requires significant improvements, for example, in sensitivity, resolution, radiation hardness, and handling of neutron imaging detectors. This paper presents the development and the first neutron imaging results of a neutron flat-panel detector (nFPD) based on an In–Ga–Zn–O (IGZO) thin-film transistor (TFT)/photodiode array coupled with a LiF/ZnS scintillator sheet. Direct photo-coupling to the scintillator increases the light collection efficiency. Moreover, unlike lens-coupled neutron cameras, the proposed detector is compact and easy to handle. Owing to the high off-state resistance of IGZO TFTs, their leakage current is lower than that of conventional TFTs, enabling the IGZO TFTs to hold an accumulated charge for a longer period of time and allowing longer exposure times for imaging. This would be a powerful feature for imaging at compact neutron sources with limited flux. Luminescent metal halides, as a type of luminescent semiconductor material, offer advantages that fulfill the requirements of emerging light source devices, such as high luminescence efficiency, good thermal stability, and tunable colorful emission. Blue light being one of the three primary colors plays a crucial role in the field of lighting and colorful displays. However, the progress in device performance of blue‐light materials lags behind that of green and red‐light materials. Currently, there have been numerous reports on metal halide perovskite blue‐light materials, but a comprehensive review on the development and performance control of blue‐light metal halides is yet to be found. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of the design strategies and luminescence mechanisms of blue‐light perovskites with various luminescence centers, as well as their application progress in the fields of light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), X‐ray scintillators, information anti‐counterfeiting and encryption. It also explores possible directions for subsequent performance improvement. This work aims to offer valuable insights and recommendations for the future development of blue‐light metal halides, with significant implications for the fabrication of novel blue light devices and advancements in detection technology. The thickness of the scintillation films in indirect X−ray detectors can significantly influence their luminescence intensity. However, due to the scattering and attenuation of incoherent photons, thick scintillation films tend to reduce light yield. Herein, a highly transparent perovskite glass−ceramic scintillation film, in which the CsPbBr3 nanocrystals are in-situ grown inside a transparent amorphous polymer structure, is designed to achieve ultrastable and efficient X-ray imaging. The crystal coordination−topology growth and in−situ film formation strategy is proposed to control the crystal growth and film thickness, which can prevent light scattering and non−uniform distribution of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals while providing sufficient film thickness to absorb X−ray, thus enabling a high−quality glass−ceramic scintillator without agglomeration and Ostwald ripening. This glass−ceramic scintillation film with a thickness of 250 μm achieves a low detection limit of 326 nGyair s−1 and a high spatial resolution of 13.9 lp mm−1. More importantly, it displays remarkable scintillation stability under X−ray irradiation (radiation intensity can still reach 95% at 278 μGyair s−1 for 3600 s), water soaking (150 days), and high−temperature storage (150 days at 60 °C). X-ray detectors based on scintillators are widely used in the fields of medical imaging, high-energy physics, geological exploration, and industrial detection. The development of scintillation materials with different characteristics has become the focus of considerable research interest. Herein, we report a facile hydrothermal synthesis of Gd- and Eu-codoped LiLuF4 microcrystals (MCs), which exhibit strong luminescence of Eu3+ ion characteristic emission, characterized by distinct red fluorescence emission. The research shows that Gd3+ co-doping effectively improved the sensitivity and light yield of LiLuF4:Eu MCs by regulating the proportion of co-doping ions. In addition, the detection limit is 140.72 nGy s−1 for LiLuF4:Eu,Gd MCs, approximately 39 times lower than the dose requirement of medical diagnosis. Based on LiLuF4:Eu,Gd MCs with the superior scintillation properties, a MC-composited film with 250 μm thickness was prepared by a direct coating method. The uniform and high-loading scintillation film exhibits outstanding imaging performance with a high spatial resolution of 14.8 LP mm−1, which confirms the application potential of X-ray imaging. For a long time, single crystals of the organic compound TPB (1,3,5-triphenylbenzene) have been viewed as a scintillator material for indirect X-ray detection. We here attempt to explore their potential for direct detection. A TPB single crystal with a size of up to 20 × 6 × 4 mm3 and without obvious growth steps was obtained using a solvent volatilization method. It has an orthorhombic structure with a high-quality FWHM of as low as 0.059 and preferred grown orientations along (131) and (220). AFM images clarify the two-dimensional nucleation growth mechanism. The fitted bandgap of the as-grown crystal is about 3.65 eV. TPB detectors with vertical and coplanar electrodes with a resistivity of 2.56 × 1013 Ω cm and 6.68 × 1013 Ω cm, respectively, were prepared. The mobilities for electrons (μe) and holes (μh) for the coplanar device were calculated to be 1.12 cm2 V−1 s−1 and 1.02 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. Under a 50 kV X-ray beam, the detection limit is as low as 0.35 μGy s−1, and the sensitivity reaches 2.72 μC Gy−1 cm−2. The TPB devices have the ability to detect 241Am@5.49 MeV α particles, showing the full-energy peak collected from the holes with an energy resolution of 39.13% at 700 V. The mobility lifetime product of the TPB devices for electrons (μτ)e and holes (μτ)h were calculated to be up to 2.24 × 10−5 cm2 V−1 and 4.04 × 10−5 cm2 V−1, respectively. The TPB detector could present a spectral response to 241Am@59.5 keV γ-rays from the holes with an energy resolution of 44.25% at 1000 V, which shows the potential for both direct and indirect detection of high-energy radiation.
