The authors report the preparation of silica nanotubes by a simple two-stage thermal evaporation of ZnSe and SiO powders. Firstly, nanocables with single crystalline ZnSe nanowire cores and amorphous SiO2 shells were formed by a combined vapor-liquid-solid and SiO-assisted growth process. The ZnSe cores were then evaporated at high temperatures leaving behind SiO2 nanotubes. As-fabricated SiO2 nanotubes were studied with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopic analysis, and photoluminescence measurement. The SiO2 nanotubes were found to be amorphous, diameter uniform, smooth, and rigid. This method can be used to prepare other materials and morphology-controlled nanotubes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large-scale uniform silicon nanowires (SiNWs) array was fabricated by chemical etching on n-Si(111) wafer. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were loaded on their surfaces. The AgNPs on SiNWs (AgNPs@SiNWs) array exhibit strong surface-enhanced Raman effect. On the substrate surfaces, characteristic Raman signals are generated with trace amount of mouse immunoglobulin G (mIgG), goat-anti-mouse immunoglobulin G (gamIgG), and immune complexes formed from 4 ng each of mIgG and gamIgG. The shifted positions and changed intensities in Raman bands indicate the occurrence of immunoreactions. This AgNPs@SiNWs array is a unique substrate for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to show the immune reagents and immunoreactions at higher sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanoscale topography was constructed on a thermally responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) surface by grafting the polymer from silicon nanowire arrays via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The as-prepared surface showed largely reduced platelet adhesion in vitro both below and above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAAm (∼32 °C), while a smooth PNIPAAm surface exhibited antiadhesion to platelets only below the LCST. Contact angle and adhesive force measurements on oil droplets (1,2-dichloroethane) in water demonstrated that the nanoscale topography kept a relatively high ratio of water content on the as-prepared surface and played a key role in largely reducing the adhesion of platelets; however, this effect did not exist on the smooth PNIPAAm surface. The results can be used to extend the applications of PNIPAAm in the fields of biomaterials and biomedicine under human physiological temperature and provide a new strategy for fabricating other blood-compatible materials. Abstract: We demonstrate bulk synthesis of single-crystal Sc-doped ZnO nanowires by using (Sc+Zn) powders at . These mass nanowires are characterized through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction, and high-resolution TEM, which have uniform diameters of about 40nm and microns of several decades in length. The growth of ZnScO nanowires is suggested for self-catalyzed vapor–liquid–solid. In particular, PL spectra of these nanowires show emission peaks that intensely shift to long wavelength with increasing Sc and the doping quantity is found responsible for the different characteristics, in which PL mechanism is explained in detail.
