This paper studies the secure transmission in a multiuser broadcast channel where only the statistical channel state information of the eavesdropper is available. We propose to apply secret dirty-paper coding (S-DPC) in this scenario to support the secure transmission of one user and the normal (unclassified) transmission of the other users. By adopting the S-DPC and encoding the secret message in the first place, all the information-bearing signals of the normal transmission are treated as noise by potential eavesdroppers and thus provide secrecy for the secure transmission. In this way, the proposed approach exploits the intrinsic secrecy of multiuser broadcasting and can serve as an energy-efficient alternative to the traditional artificial noise (AN) scheme. To evaluate the secrecy performance of this approach and compare it with the AN scheme, we propose two S-DPC-based secure transmission schemes for maximizing the secrecy rate under constraints on the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the normal transmission rates. The first scheme directly optimizes the covariance matrices of the transmit signals, and a novel approximation of the intractable SOP constraint is derived to facilitate the optimization. The second scheme combines zero-forcing dirty-paper coding and AN, and the optimization involves only power allocation. We establish efficient numerical algorithms to solve the optimization problems for both schemes. Theoretical and simulation results confirm that, in addition to supporting the normal transmission, the achievable secrecy rates of the proposed schemes can be close to that of the traditional AN scheme, which supports only the secure transmission of one user. The paper examines the application of adaptive antennas in wireless communication systems with particular attention to how well they can transmit and receive signals by dynamically adjusting radiation patterns. The review covers a range of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches that have been used to enhance adaptive antenna performance in beamforming, channel estimation, interference mitigation, and spectrum utilization. This paper considers the downlink of a cognitive radio (CR) network formed by multiple primary and secondary transmitters, where each multiantenna transmitter serves a preknown set of single-antenna users. This paper assumes that the secondary and primary transmitters can simultaneously transmit their data over the same frequency bands to achieve high system spectrum efficiency. This paper considers the downlink balancing problem of maximizing the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the secondary transmitters subject to both the total power constraint of the secondary transmitters and the maximum interference constraint at each primary user due to secondary transmissions. This paper proposes solving the problem using the alternating direction method of multipliers, which leads to a distributed implementation through limited information exchange across the coupled secondary transmitters. This paper additionally proposes a solution that guarantees feasibility at each iteration. The explosive growth of Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications such as smart cities and Industry 4.0 have led to drastic increase in demand for wireless bandwidth, hence motivating the rapid development of new techniques for enhancing spectrum utilization needed by new generation wireless communication technologies. Among others, dynamic spectrum access (DSA) is one of the most widely accepted approaches. In this paper, as an enhancement of existing works, we take into consideration of inter-node collaborations in a dynamic spectrum environment. Typically, in such distributed circumstances, intelligent dynamic spectrum access almost invariably relies on self-learning to achieve dynamic spectrum access improvement. Whereas, this paper proposes a DSA scheme based on deep reinforcement learning to enhance spectrum and access efficiency. Unlike traditional Q-learning-based DSA, we introduce the following to enhance the spectrum efficiency in dynamic IoT spectrum environments. First, deep double Q-learning is adopted to perform local self-spectrum-learning for IoT terminals in order to achieve better dynamic access accuracy. Second, to accelerate learning convergence, federated learning (FL) in edge nodes is used to improve the self-learning. Third, multiple secondary users, who do not interfere with each other and have similar operation condition, are clustered for federated learning to enhance the efficiency of deep reinforcement learning. Comparing with the traditional distributed DSA with deep learning, the proposed scheme has faster access convergence speed due to the characteristic of global optimization for federated learning. Based on this, a framework of federated deep reinforcement learning (FDRL) for DSA is proposed. Furthermore, this scheme preserves privacy of IoT users in that FDRL only requires model parameters to be uploaded to edge servers. The future connectivity landscape, and notably, the 5G wireless systems will feature Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC). The coupling of high reliability and low latency requirements in URLLC use cases makes the wireless access design very challenging, in terms of both the protocol design and of the associated transmission techniques. This paper aims to provide a broad perspective on the fundamental tradeoffs in URLLC, as well as the principles used in building access protocols. Two specific technologies are considered in the context of URLLC: massive MIMO and multi-connectivity, also termed interface diversity. This paper provides an analytical performance characterization of both the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) user-centric network multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where a cooperating base station (BS) cluster is formed for each user individually and the clusters for different users may overlap. In this model, cooperating BSs (each equipped with multiple antennas) jointly perform zero-forcing beamforming to the set of single-antenna users associated with them. As compared with a baseline network MIMO system with disjoint BS clusters, the effect of user-centric clustering is that it improves signal strength in both the UL and DL, while reducing cluster-edge interference in the DL. This paper quantifies these effects by assuming that BSs and users form Poisson point processes and by further approximating both the signal and interference powers using Gamma distributions of appropriate parameters. We show that BS cooperation provides significant gain as compared to single-cell processing for both the UL and DL, but the advantage of user-centric clustering over the baseline disjoint clustering system is significant for the DL cluster-edge users only. Although the analytic results are derived with the assumption of perfect channel state information and infinite backhaul between the cooperating BSs, they nevertheless provide architectural insight into the design of the future cooperative cellular networks. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a wireless communication technology that is used for highly reliable and high data rate communication. In a multi-user OFDM system, the interference has occurred in the receiver side between the consecutive OFDM symbols. This interference reduces the performance of the OFDM system. To achieve good quality in received symbols the interference level should be minimized. The conventional cancellation system requires higher interference reduction time and power. These limitations of the conventional interference cancellation architectures for OFDM systems are overcome by proposing efficient and low power interference cancellation architecture. Hence, this paper proposes a novel and efficient architecture based on logic gates for interference cancellation in multi-user OFDM systems. The proposed design consist of multiplexers, inverters and OR gate. The heuristic parameters for the proposed cancellation architecture are computed by performing an XOR operation. Compared to existing architecture, the proposed interference cancellation architecture consumes 7 mW of power consumption in the Virtex processor, 33.59 mW of power consumption in Spartan 3E processor and 0.029 mW of power consumption in the CPLD processor. This proposed interference cancellation architecture consumes fewer hardware resources and consumes low power. The proposed system is designed using Verilog High Definition Language (HDL) and synthesized in Xilinx Project Navigator 12.1i. Further, this paper also proposes gate diffusion input (GDI) based implementation of proposed interference cancellation architecture to analyse a delay and power consumption compared to other logic style implementation. This paper investigates the interference nulling capability of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in a multiuser environment where multiple single-antenna transceivers communicate simultaneously in a shared spectrum. From a theoretical perspective, we show that when the channels between the RIS and the transceivers have line-of-sight and the direct paths are blocked, it is possible to adjust the phases of the RIS elements to null out all the interference completely and to achieve the maximum $K$ degrees-of-freedom (DoF) in the overall $K$ -user interference channel, provided that the number of RIS elements exceeds some finite value that depends on $K$. Algorithmically, for any fixed channel realization we formulate the interference nulling problem as a feasibility problem, and propose an alternating projection algorithm to efficiently solve the resulting nonconvex problem with local convergence guarantee. Numerical results show that the proposed alternating projection algorithm can null all the interference if the number of RIS elements is only slightly larger than a threshold of $2K(K-1)$. For the practical sum-rate maximization objective, this paper proposes to use the zero-forcing solution obtained from alternating projection as an initial point for subsequent Riemannian conjugate gradient optimization and shows that it has a significant performance advantage over random initializations. The universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC) modulation is among the most considered solutions for the realization of beyond orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) air interfaces for future wireless networks. This paper focuses on the design and analysis of a UFMC transceiver equipped with multiple antennas and operating at millimeter-wave carrier frequencies. This paper provides the full mathematical model of an MIMO-UFMC transceiver, taking into account the presence of hybrid analog/digital beamformers at both ends of the communication links. Then, several detection structures are proposed, both for the case of single-packet isolated transmission and for the case of multiple-packet continuous transmission. In the latter situation, this paper also considers the case in which no guard time among adjacent packets is inserted, trading off an increased level of interference with higher values of spectral efficiency. At the analysis stage, several considered detection structures and transmission schemes are compared in terms of bit-error rate, root-mean-square error, and system throughput. The numerical results show that the proposed transceiver algorithms are effective and that the linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) data detector is capable of well managing the increased interference brought by the removal of guard times among consecutive packets, thus yielding throughput gains of about 10%–13%. The effect of phase noise at the receiver is also numerically assessed, and it is shown that the recursive implementation of the linear MMSE exhibits some degree of robustness against this disturbance. This paper studies the outage capacity of a network consisting of a multitude of heterogeneous mobile users and operating according to the classical opportunistic beamforming framework. The base station is located at the center of the cell, which is modeled as a disk of finite radius. The random user locations are modeled using a homogeneous spatial Poisson point process. The received signals are impaired by both fading and location dependent path loss. For this system, we first derive an expression for the beam outage probability. This expression holds for all path loss models that satisfy some mild conditions. Then, we focus on two specific path loss models (i.e., an unbounded model and a more realistic bounded one) to illustrate the applications of our results. In the large system limit, where the cell radius tends to infinity, the beam outage capacity and its scaling behavior are derived for the selected specific path loss models. This paper also studies opportunistic schemes that achieve fairness among the heterogeneous users. In wireless networks, the link connectivity may be intermittent due to shadowing, burstiness of data arrival, or uncoordinated resource allocation. In this paper, we model the intermittence of links as Bernoulli distributed random channel states, termed intermittence channel states, and study the impact of the corresponding channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel (BC). Moreover, due to the heterogeneous timeliness of intermittence channel states, the CSIT considered in this paper is hybrid. More specifically, the CSIT of each link can be perfectly (causally or non-causally) available, delayed, or not available. When the links are connected, we adopt a general setting that the received signal-to-noise ratios can be different. Our contribution is the characterization of the capacity regions of intermittent Gaussian BC to within bounded gaps for all combinations of hybrid CSIT, except for scenario DN (delayed CSIT of receiver 1, no CSIT of receiver 2). For scenario DN, we propose an opportunistic physical layer network coding scheme that achieves a strictly larger degree-of-freedom (DoF) region than the no-CSIT DoF region. As a corollary, single-user CSIT is able to increase the sum DoF for intermittent Gaussian BC (also the capacity region for the erasure BC, as a by-product). This result is in sharp contrast to the recent negative result by Davoodi and Jafar, where it is shown that for fast-fading multiple-input single-output BC with continuous channel states, single-user CSIT does not help at all in terms of sum DoF. In concurrent spectrum sharing scenarios between radars and wireless communication systems, one strict approach to protect the radar from undesired interference is locating the base stations outside a guard (or exclusion) zone of the radar. As a result, users inside that zone experience bad communication coverage. This paper uses Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) to improve the base station coverage of users in the radar exclusion zone. The paper shows, through analysis and simulation, that joint optimization of base station and RIS locations improves the probability of coverage in the exclusion zone over the shared spectrum without disturbing the radar operation. Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) used to be alone at the C-Band spectrum in most countries. Since the deployment of 5G in many countries (i.e., 3.3–3.6 GHz), FSS is not the exclusive system in the C-Band anymore. In order to minimize the detrimental interference for the FSS to allowable levels, regional exclusion zones of maximum radiated power in 5G base stations (BS) are proposed and evaluated. In this paper, a measurement campaign has been carried out, and an analysis of the interference has been studied. A filtering model, namely Filter to Remove Broadband Interference 5G (FIREBRING), is proposed and analyzed concerning the carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N). Moreover, this paper focuses on the evaluation of the 5G interference into the FSS. The proposed solution deployed an Low-Noise Block (LNB) with a band frequency of 3.7 to 4.2 GHz to test the satellite down-conversion signal at the receiver. The paper offered a complete analysis of the 5G signal, taking into account the implications of out-of-band emissions, potentially LNB saturation into FSS receiver, and the repercussions of the deployment of the 5G BS active antenna systems. Doppler effect is a fundamental phenomenon that appears in wave propagation, where a moving observer experiences dilation or contraction of the wavelength of a wave. It also appears in radio frequency (RF) wireless communication when there exists a relative movement between the transmitter and the receiver, and is widely considered as a major impairment for reliable wireless communication. The current paper proposes Doppler assisted wireless communication (DAWC) that exploits Doppler effect and uses kinetic energy for co-channel interference (CCI) mitigation. The proposed system also exploits the propagation environment and the network topology and consists of an access point (AP) with a rotating drum antenna. The rotating drum receive antenna is designed in such a way that it shifts the interfering signals away from the desired signal band. This paper includes a detailed system model, and the results show that under favorable fading conditions, CCI can be significantly reduced. In this paper, we explore the different per-user bandwidths available for each tier of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and the corresponding downlink range expansion (RE, a key measure to boost small cell association). Based on the practical case of tier-specific path loss exponents, we derive the local delay of HetNets under the random discontinuous transmission scheme (DTX, employed to manage the interference and reduce energy consumption). Using such a new expression for local delay, we then analyze the corresponding energy efficiency (EE). These delay and EE expressions reveal that there exists an optimal value for both the RE bias factor and for the DTX mute probability. This paper proposes interference mitigation techniques for provisioning ultrareliable low-latency wireless communication in an industrial automation setting, where multiple transmissions from controllers to actuators interfere with each other. Channel fading and interference are key impairments in wireless communication. This paper leverages the recently proposed “Occupy CoW” protocol that efficiently exploits the broadcast opportunity and spatial diversity through a two-hop cooperative communication strategy among distributed receivers to combat deep fading, but points out that because this protocol avoids interference by frequency division orthogonal transmission, it is not scalable in terms of bandwidth required for achieving ultrareliability, when multiple controllers simultaneously communicate with multiple actuators (akin to the downlink of a multicell network). The main observation of this paper is that full frequency reuse in the first phase, together with successive decoding and cancellation of interference, can improve the performance of this strategy notably. We propose two protocols depending on whether interference cancellation or avoidance is implemented in the second phase, and show that both outperform Occupy CoW in terms of the required bandwidth and power for achieving ultrareliability at practical values of the transmit power. This paper analyzes an emerging architecture of cellular network utilizing both planar base stations uniformly distributed in the Euclidean plane and base stations located on roads. An example of this architecture is that where, in addition to conventional planar cellular base stations and users, vehicles also play the role of both base stations and users. A Poisson line process is used to model the road network and, conditionally on the lines, linear Poisson point processes are used to model the vehicles on the roads. The conventional planar base stations and users are modeled by the independent planar Poisson point processes. We use Palm calculus to investigate the statistical properties of a typical user in such a network. Specifically, this paper discusses two different Palm distributions, with respect to the user point processes depending on its type: planar or vehicular. We derive the distance to the nearest base station, the association of the typical users, and the coverage probability of the typical user. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive characterization of coverage of all possible cellular transmissions in this setting, namely, vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, infrastructure-to-vehicle, and infrastructure-to-infrastructure. The heterogeneous fog radio access networks (Fog-RAN), the integration of fog computing, and traditional heterogeneous radio access networks can be implemented through the next-generation wireless communication networks. However, most of the solutions are limited to the spectrum efficiency optimization, and cross-tier interference existing in the fog access points (F-APs) could affect the network performance seriously. In this paper, the user association, resource allocation (including bandwidth and power), and caching deployment are investigated in the heterogeneous Fog-RAN to consider energy efficiency and cross-tier interference mitigation. Specifically, the user association, resource allocation, and caching strategy are formulated as a non-convex optimization problem and then transformed into a convex problem, which can be solved by a proposed algorithm based on the concept of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Then an ADMM-based algorithm is proposed to enhance the energy efficiency of the Fog-RAN. This paper proposes a new paradigm for spectrum sharing between cellular wireless communications (CWC) and radio astronomy systems (RAS). In contrast to the existing paradigm of geographical and spectral isolation between CWC and RAS, this paper develops a three phase spectrum access, which enables geographical and spectral coexistence between CWC and RAS. Shared spectrum access zone (SSAZ) is created around the RAS site and CWC cells within the SSAZ follow the three phase spectrum access scheme while those outside the SSAZ have full spectrum access. In addition, system characteristics-based improved spectrum sharing is developed. Furthermore, a built-in fine tuning mechanism is presented for addressing mismatches between design and practical environments as well as for facilitating service evolutions. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed paradigm offers 1) certain guaranteed spectrum access to RAS, which is impossible in the existing paradigm, 2) capability to handle higher peak and mean traffics to CWC under spectrum restructuring of both CWC and RAS bands, and 3) overall improved spectrum utilization. The emergence of interference alignment (IA) as a degrees-of-freedom optimal strategy motivates the need to investigate whether IA can be leveraged to aid conventional network utility maximization algorithms, which are typically only capable of finding locally optimal solutions. To test the usefulness of IA in this context, this paper proposes a two-stage optimization framework for the downlink of a $G$ -cell multi-antenna network with $K$ users/cell. The first stage of the proposed framework focuses on nulling interference from a set of dominant interferers using IA, while the second stage optimizes transmit and receive beamformers to maximize a network-wide utility using the IA solution as the initial condition. Further, this paper establishes a set of new feasibility results for partial IA that can be used to guide the number of dominant interferers to be nulled in the first stage. Through simulations on specific topologies of a cluster of base stations, it is observed that the impact of IA depends on the choice of the utility function and the presence of out-of-cluster interference. In the absence of out-of-cluster interference, the proposed framework outperforms straightforward optimization when maximizing the minimum rate, while providing marginal gains when maximizing sum rate. This paper addresses a brand new way of thinking that distinguishes itself by integrating two entities, namely, dynamic spectrum management on the one hand and cognitive dynamic system (CDS) on the other. To be more precise, the CDS performs the role of a cognitive engine centered at the heart of wireless communications, wherein licensed bands rooted in network providers responsible for primary users and unlicensed bands rooted in other networks responsible for secondary users. Rendezvous is a fundamental building block in distributed cognitive-radio networks (CRNs), in which pairs or groups of users must find a jointly available channel. Research on the rendezvous problem has focused so far on minimizing the time to rendezvous (to find a suitable channel) or on maximizing the rendezvous degree (percentage of channels on which rendezvous can take place). In this paper, we model the rendezvous problem in a more realistic way that acknowledges the fact that available channels may suffer from interference which varies from location to location as well as over time. In other words, channels are influenced by heterogeneous interference. In this setting, CRNs benefit from rendezvous methods that find a quiet channel, which supports high symbol rates and does not suffer much from dropped packets. In this paper, we propose three important rendezvous design disciplines to achieve bounded rendezvous time, full rendezvous degree, and to rendezvous on quiet channels that suffer little interference. We first present the Disjoint Relaxed Difference Set (DRDS) based rendezvous algorithm as a cornerstone, which ensures rendezvous on every channel (full rendezvous degree) in bounded time. When channels suffer from heterogeneous interference, we propose the Interference based DRDS (I-DRDS) algorithm which ensures rendezvous on channels with less interference, incorporating the interference normalization and interference mapping methods. We conduct extensive simulations to evaluate the proposed algorithms; compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms, the results show that I-DRDS has the best rendezvous performance on less interfered channels, with slightly larger rendezvous time. Hardware non-idealities are among the main performance restrictions for upcoming wireless communication systems. Asymmetric hardware distortions (HWD) happen when the impairments of the I/Q branches are correlated or imbalanced, which in turn generate improper additive interference at the receiver side. When the interference is improper, as well as in other interference-limited scenarios, improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) has been shown to provide rate and/or power efficiency benefits. In this paper, we investigate the rate benefits of IGS in a two-user interference channel (IC) with additive asymmetric HWD when interference is treated as noise. We propose two iterative algorithms to optimize the parameters of the improper transmit signals. We first rewrite the rate region as an pseudo-signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (PSINR) region and employ majorization minimization and fractional programming to find a suboptimal solution for the achievable user rates. Then, we propose a simplified algorithm based on a separate optimization of the powers and complementary variances of the users, which exhibits lower computational complexity. We show that IGS can improve the performance of the two-user IC with additive HWD. The visible light communication (VLC) can provide data transmission via the illumination light emitting diodes (LED). This paper introduces a new model to analyze the bit error rate (BER) of binary phase modulation in VLC for an arbitrary modulation depth and data duty cycle while taking into account both the Gaussian and signal-dependent shot noise. The impact of the driver design on the BER and its impact on ripple have not been considered in detail before. We compare two different LED driver schemes, namely directly adapting the driver control loop and binary shunting. We address data rate, BER, and power efficiency, for which we propose to use the extra energy per symbol above unmodulated light. We further introduce an analysis of the effect that (truncated) ripple interference has in the (matched or other) filter of the receiver. Ripple causes a harmful interference in VLC, and thus a BER expression is derived to include its effect. Two approximations are proposed to model the ripple interference, and their accuracies are compared by simulations. This paper considers optimization of the user and base-station (BS) association in a wireless downlink heterogeneous cellular network under the proportional fairness criterion. We first consider the case where each BS has a single antenna and transmits at fixed power and propose a distributed price update strategy for a pricing-based user association scheme, in which the users are assigned to the BS based on the value of a utility function minus a price. The proposed price update algorithm is based on a coordinate descent method for solving the dual of the network utility maximization problem and it has a rigorous performance guarantee. The main advantage of the proposed algorithm as compared to an existing subgradient method for price update is that the proposed algorithm is independent of parameter choices and can be implemented asynchronously. Further, this paper considers the joint user association and BS power control problem and proposes an iterative dual coordinate descent and the power optimization algorithm that significantly outperforms existing approaches. Finally, this paper considers the joint user association and BS beamforming problem for the case where the BSs are equipped with multiple antennas and spatially multiplex multiple users. We incorporate dual coordinate descent with the weighted minimum mean-squared error (WMMSE) algorithm and show that it achieves nearly the same performance as a computationally more complex benchmark algorithm (which applies the WMMSE algorithm on the entire network for BS association) while avoiding excessive BS handover. This paper presents a part of our ground-breaking work on evaluation of buildings in terms of wireless friendliness at the building-design stage. The main goal is to devise building design practices that provide for a good performance of wireless networks deployed in buildings. In this paper, the interference gain (IG) and power gain (PG) are defined as two figures of merit (FoM) of the wireless performance of buildings. The FoMs bridge the gap between building design and wireless communications industries. An approach to derive exact closed-form equations for these FoMs is proposed for the first time. The derived analytic expressions facilitate straightforward and more computationally efficient numerical evaluation of the proposed FoMs as compared to Monte Carlo simulations for well-known indoor propagation models. It is shown that the derived closed-form expression can be readily employed to evaluate the impact of building properties, such as the sizes and the aspect ratios (ARs) of rooms, on the wireless performance. In RFID systems, the privacy problem has attracted increasing attention as the tags have extremely limited on-chip resources and may blindly respond to unauthorized readers. To protect the privacy, one widely used solution is to deploy one or more blocker tags to collide the RF signal sent from protected tags all the time. In this paper, we investigate the problem of tag identification in privacy-sensitive RFID systems when we have the authorized reader(s). Due to the presence of blocker tags, the tag identification becomes more challenging since the protected tags and blocker tags will always respond concurrently, leading to unreconciled collisions. To overcome this challenge, we in this paper propose three efficient tag identification protocols IIP, SIP, and SUIP, which meet three application requirements: privacy, accuracy, and efficiency. IIP iteratively deactivates blocking tags as well as labeling genuine tags, and finally identifies tags by avoiding all the unreconciled collisions. On top of IIP, SIP further avoids the slot waste by carrying out a filter to separate genuine tags from others in advance. Furthermore, SUIP can identify the incremental unknown tags in an efficient way. It separates the incremental unknown tags from others by using a filter with improved performance and puts forward a collision reconciliation technique to accelerate the identification process. Nowadays multiple wireless communication systems operate in industrial environments side by side. In such an environment performance of one wireless network can be degraded by the collocated hostile wireless network having higher transmission power or higher carrier sensing threshold. Unlike the previous research works which considered IEEE 802.15.4 for the Industrial Wireless communication systems (iWCS) this paper examines the coexistence of IEEE 802.11 based iWCS used for delay-stringent communication in process automation and gWLAN (general-purpose WLAN) used for non-real time communication. In this paper, we present a Markov chain-based performance model that described the transmission failure of iWCS due to geographical collision with gWLAN. The presented analyticmodel accurately determines throughput, packet transaction delay, and packet loss probability of iWCS when it is collocated with gWLAN. The results of the Markov model match more than 90% with our simulation results. Furthermore, we proposed an adaptive transmission power control technique for iWCS to overcome the potential interferences caused by the gWLAN transmissions. The simulation results show that the proposed technique significantly improves iWCS performance in terms of throughput, packet transaction, and cycle period reduction. Carrier sense multiple access with collision notification (CSMA/CN) is a typical representation of physical-layer (PHY)/medium access control (MAC) co-designs, where the MAC control frames are implemented or detected using PHY techniques. With CSMA/CN, the sender detects an unsuccessful transmission, with the aid of a collision notification (CN) from the receiver. In this paper, we first theoretically study the crucial impact of the CN attributes (namely, the detection threshold and the length) on system throughput in a wireless local area network (WLAN). We identify that the false-alarm probability of CN (more generally, the control frames in PHY/MAC co-designs) is a dominating metric that influences system performance. This paper will help developers select optimal CN attributes to balance various factors influencing CN detection performance. Massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems can suffer from coherent intercell interference due to the phenomenon of pilot contamination. This paper investigates a two-layer decoding method that mitigates both coherent and non-coherent interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO. To this end, each base station (BS) first estimates the channels to intra-cell users using either minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) or element-wise MMSE estimation based on uplink pilots. The estimates are used for local decoding on each BS followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes. A closed form expression is then obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading, maximum-ratio combining, and the proposed large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. We also formulate a sum SE maximization problem with both the data power and LSFD vectors as optimization variables. Since this is an NP-hard problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm based on the weighted MMSE approach to obtain a local optimum. In this paper, a tractable model of cellular wireless networks is considered, where both the basestation (BS) and mobile user (MU) locations are distributed as independent Poisson point processes, and each MU connects to its nearest BS. Each packet from the BS is transmitted using an automatic-repeat-request strategy until the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is larger than a threshold, and the packet delay is equal to the expected number of retransmissions required for successful reception. We define the network capacity as the product of the BS density and the reciprocal of the packet delay, maximized over all BS strategies. This definition of capacity, while being natural, is non-trivial to analyses because of the temporal correlations of SINRs and arbitrary BS strategies. An exact characterization (non-asymptotic) of this natural capacity metric is derived, which shows that the capacity increases polynomially with the BS density in the low BS density regime and then scales inverse exponentially with the increasing BS density. The integration of local device-to-device (D2D) communications and cellular connections has been intensively studied to satisfy co-existing D2D and cellular communication demand. In future cellular networks, there will be numerous standby users possessing D2D communication capabilities in close proximity to each other. Considering that these standby users do not necessarily request D2D communications all the time, in this paper we propose a hybrid D2D-cellular scheme to make use of these standby users and to improve the rate performance for cellular users. More specifically, through D2D links, a virtual antenna array can be formed by sharing antennas across different terminals to realize the diversity gain of MIMO channels. This paper considers the use of millimeter wave links to enable high data rate D2D communications. We then design an orthogonal D2D multiple access protocol and formulate the optimization problem of joint cellular and D2D resource allocation for downlink transmissions using the proposed scheme. We obtain a closed-form solution for D2D resource allocation, which reveals useful insights for practical system design. The three-tier spectrum sharing framework (3-TSF) is a spectrum sharing model adopted by the Federal Communications Commission. According to this model, under-utilized federal spectrum like the Citizens Broadband Radio Service band is released for shared use where the highest preference is given to Tier-1 followed by Tier-2 (T2) and then Tier-3 (T3). In this paper, we study how a wireless operator, who is interested in maximizing its profit, can strategically operate as a T2 and/or a T3 user. T2 is characterized by paid but ”almost” guaranteed and interference-free channel access while T3 access is free but has the lesser guarantee and also faces channel interference. So the operator has to optimally decide between paid but better channel quality and free but uncertain channel quality. Also, the operator has to make these decisions without knowing future market variables like customer demand or channel availability. The main contribution of this paper is a deterministic online algorithm for leasing channels that has finite competitive ratio, low time complexity, and that does not rely on the knowledge of market statistics. Such algorithms are desirable in the early stages of the deployment of 3-TSF because the knowledge of market statistics may be rather inaccurate. We use tools from the ski-rental literature to design the online algorithm. The online optimization problem for leasing channels is a novel generalization of the ski-rental problem. We, therefore, make fundamental contributions to the ski-rental literature, the applications of which extend beyond this paper. Hardware calibration is essential to restore the uplink/downlink channel reciprocity for multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in a time division duplexing mode. Unfortunately, due to the associated overhead, calibration cannot be performed frequently; furthermore, any calibration procedure leaves behind a residual mismatch between the uplink and downlink channels. In this paper, we study the effects of these calibration errors on the achievable rates in the downlink of a multi-cell, multi-user, and distributed massive MIMO system. Specifically, we develop accurate, yet simple, lower-bounds on the per-user achievable rate, assuming either zero-forcing (ZF) or matched filtering (MF) are used. We also introduce a performance loss coefficient as a measure of sensitivity of the performance to the calibration errors. Using this measure, we identify the conditions under which ZF precoding is more sensitive to calibration errors than MF. Finally, we consider the robust weighted sum-rate maximization problem to mitigate the degrading effects of non-ideal calibration. Our numerical experiments show that the rate lower-bounds developed in this paper accurately quantify the impacts of non-ideal calibration on performance. In this paper, the scaling law of the network throughput of a special type of heterogeneous networks is studied, where a secondary network composed of cognitive users shares the same resources opportunistically with a primary network of licensed users. Some pioneering works in this area showed that this type of heterogeneous networks performs as well as two stand-alone networks under the dense network model. A key assumption behind this conclusion is that the density of the secondary network is higher than that of the primary network in the order sense, which essentially decouples the two overlaid networks as the secondary network dominates asymptotically. In this paper, we endeavor to investigate this problem with a weaker condition that the dimensions of the two overlaid networks are on the same order, under the extended network model. Our analysis shows that, with the ratio of the two network sizes larger than a threshold, this weaker (and arguably more practical) condition does not degrade either network throughput scaling. This paper investigates low-complexity joint interference avoidance and desired link improvement for single-channel allocation in multiuser multiantenna access points (APs) for open-access small cells. It is considered that an active user is equipped with an antenna array that can be used to suppress interference sources but not to provide spatial diversity. On the other hand, the operation of APs can be coordinated to meet design requirements, where each of which can unconditionally utilize assigned physical channels. Moreover, each AP is equipped with uncorrelated antennas that can be reused simultaneously to serve many active users. The analysis provides new approaches to exploit physical channels, transmit antennas, and APs to mitigate interference, while providing the best possible link gain to an active user through the most suitable interference-free channel. The event of concurrent service requests placed by active users on a specific interference-free channel is discussed for either interference avoidance through identifying unshared channels or desired link improvement via multiuser scheduling. The applicability of the approaches to balance downlink loads is explained, and practical scenarios due to imperfect identification of interference-free channels and/or the scheduled user are thoroughly investigated. The developed results are applicable for any statistical and geometric models of the allocated channel to an active user, as well as channel conditions of interference users. Caching at the wireless edge nodes is a promising way to boost the spatial and spectral efficiency, for the sake of alleviating networks from content-related traffic. Coded caching originally introduced by Maddah-Ali and Niesen significantly speeds up communication efficiency by transmitting multicast messages simultaneously useful to multiple users. Most prior works on coded caching are based on the assumption that each user may request all content in the library. However, in many applications the users are interested only in a limited set of content that depends on their location. For example, assisted self-driving vehicles may access super High-Definition maps of the area through which they are travelling. Motivated by these considerations, this paper formulates the coded caching problem for location-based content with edge cache nodes. The considered problem includes a content server with access to ${\mathsf N}$ location-based files (e.g., High-Definition maps), ${\mathsf K}$ edge cache nodes located at different regions, and ${\mathsf K}$ users (i.e., vehicles) each of which is in the serving region of one cache node and can retrieve the cached content of this cache node with negligible cost. Depending on the location, each user only requests a file from a location-dependent subset of the library. The objective is to minimize the worst-case load (i.e., the worst-case number of broadcasted bits from the content server among all possible demands). For this novel coded caching problem, we propose a highly non-trivial converse bound under uncoded cache placement (i.e., each cache node directly copies some library bits in its cache), which shows that a simple achievable scheme is optimal under uncoded cache placement. In addition, this achievable scheme is also proved to be generally order optimal within a factor of 3. Finally, we extend the coded caching problem for location-based content to the multiaccess coded caching topology originally proposed by Hachem et al., where each user is connected to ${\mathsf L}$ nearest cache nodes. With the explosive proliferation of connected devices and mobile users in the Internet-of-things, multiple access techniques are urged to be developed for the next generation wireless communications. Recently, rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has been a promising communication technology that holds advantages of strong robustness, low complexity, and high spectral efficiency, which can be integrated with the indoor visible light communication (VLC) broadcast system to compensate for the shortcomings of limited modulation bandwidth of LEDs. However, the research on the RSMA-based VLC systems is still in its infancy and there exist various problems to be explored. To benefit from the RSMA technique, this paper investigates the energy efficiency optimizations for both single-cell and multi-cell RSMA-based VLC broadcast systems. Specifically, these two systems are modeled, where the VLC broadcast channel follows Lambertian radiation model, and the splitting design and successive interference cancellation of RSMA are employed to mitigate the multi-user interference. Especially for multi-cell networks, the zero-forcing approach is adopted to eliminate the inter-cell interference. To maximize the energy efficiency, the precoding and power allocation problems are formulated for single-cell and multi-cell networks while accommodating multiple constraints including dynamic operation ranges of LEDs, QoS requirements, and interference elimination. For solving these non-convex fractional problems, two pieces of successive convex approximation (SCA)-based algorithms are proposed, in which the variable transformation and linear approximation are adopted. The knowledge of error nature in wireless channels is an essential constituent of efficient communication protocol design. To this end, this paper is the first comprehensive bit- and symbol-level analysis of IEEE 802.15.4 transmission errors in industrial environments. The intention with this paper is to extract the error properties relevant for future improvements of wireless communication reliability and coexistence of radio systems in these harsh conditions. An extensive set of bit-error traces was collected in a variety of scenarios and industrial environments, showing that error behavior is highly dependent on the cause of packet corruption. It is shown that errors inflicted by multipath fading and attenuation exhibit different properties than those imposed by IEEE 802.11 interference. The statistical behavior of these two patterns is concurrently investigated in terms of differences in bit-error distribution, error burst length, channel memory length, and the scale of packet corruption. With these conclusions at hand, abiding to the computational constraints of embedded sensors and the statistical properties of bit-errors, a Reed-Solomon $(15,k)$ block code is chosen to investigate the implications of bit-error nature on practical aspects of channel coding and interleaving. Jamming attacks can significantly impact the performance of wireless communication systems. In addition to reducing the capacity, such attacks may lead to insurmountable overhead in terms of retransmissions and increased power consumption. In this paper, we consider the multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) in the presence of a jamming attack in which a subset of the receivers can be jammed at any given time. Further, countermeasures for mitigating the effects of such jamming attacks are presented. The effectiveness of these antijamming countermeasures is quantified in terms of the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) of the MISO BC under various assumptions regarding the availability of the channel state information (CSIT) and the jammer state information at the transmitter (JSIT). The main contribution of this paper is the characterization of the DoF region of the two user MISO BC under various assumptions on the availability of CSIT and JSIT. This paper studies the performance of two traditional schedulers, namely, proportional fair (PF) and round robin (RR), in the context of relay-enhanced Long-Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) networks. These two schedulers are natural candidates for implementation in relay nodes (RNs), and following the results obtained in single-hop networks, mobile operators could be tempted to adopt PF because of the good tradeoff it offers between cell capacity and fairness. Based on a statistical throughput evaluation model, we show that this is not necessarily the right option. The number of RNs, their locations in the cell, and backhaul link quality have a decisive influence on scheduler choice. In some scenarios, it is even not desirable to deploy relays as they degrade the network performance compared with the no-relay case. For the purpose of performance evaluation, we develop a realistic and computationally tractable statistical network model that takes into account fast fading, multiple interferers, cell range expansion bias, backhaul link quality, and traffic load. The downlink power allocation in a two-tier cellular network that consists of a macrocell network underlaid by multiple femtocell networks is addressed in this paper. This paper aims to maximize the transmission capacity of the femtocell networks while guaranteeing that the interference experienced at the macro base station does not exceed an interference constraint. We formulate a Bayesian Stackelberg game to model and analyze behaviors of macrocell and femtocell base stations (MBS and FBSs, respectively). In this game, the MBS is the leader, whereas the FBSs are the followers. The channel information between an FBS and its associated femtocell user is private information and is considered the type of the follower. The leader issues the price of interference charged to the followers first to maximize its own profit. Based on the price, the followers decide the strategies to maximize their payoffs defined as the difference between the transmission capacity and the cost of interference (CoI) paid to the leader. Using backward induction, we first analyze the follower game. This paper deals with the problem of efficient resource allocation in dynamic infrastructureless wireless networks. In a reactive interference-limited scenario, at each transmission trial, every transmitter selects a frequency channel from some common pool, together with a power level. As a result, for all transmitters, not only the fading gain, but the number and the power of interfering transmissions as well, vary over time. Due to the absence of a central controller and time varying network characteristics, it is highly inefficient for transmitters to acquire the global channel and network knowledge. Therefore, given no information, each transmitter selfishly intends to maximize its average reward, which is a function of the channel quality, as well as the joint selection profile of all transmitters. This scenario is modeled as an adversarial multiplayer multiarmed bandit game, where players attempt to minimize their so-called regret, while, at the network side, achieving equilibrium in some sense. Based on this model and to solve the resource allocation problem, in this paper, we develop two joint power level and channel selection strategies. We prove that the gap between the average rewards achieved by our approaches and that based on the best fixed strategy converges to zero asymptotically. Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging short-range optical wireless communication technology that is driven by the widespread deployment of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Indoor VLC users may experience noticeable interference when independent transmitters utilizing wide-beam luminaires are closely located. In this paper, a coordinated beamforming (CB) scheme is proposed for downlink interference mitigation among the coexisting VLC attocells utilizing multi-luminaire transmitters. Compared to joint transmission (JT) schemes, wherein the data and channel state information are shared among transmitters of different attocells, the proposed CB scheme places lower requirements on the network in terms of backbone traffic, and is easier to implement in a practical deployment, though at the cost of compromised performance. In this paper, we investigate the downlink transmission of coordinated VLC attocells and focus on its transmitter design. The weighted sum mean square error (WSMSE) is adopted as the performance metric to take into consideration interference, noise, and fairness among users in system optimization. The WSMSE minimization problem is considered with linear beamforming restricted by amplitude constraints. Such constraints arise from the dynamic range limitations in typical LEDs. Moreover, we extend our design method to take into account possible mismatches in channel information available to the transmitters. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed CB scheme in typical VLC scenarios. In this paper, a home Internet-of-Things system is analyzed by dividing it into four layers, i.e., the node layer, gateway layer, service layer, and open layer. The gateway layer, which supports a variety of wireless technologies and is the core of home wireless networks access unit, together with the node layer constitutes the home wireless network. A gateway prototype following the proposed architecture has been implemented. A testbed of an interference-aware wireless network which includes the gateway prototype has also been created for testing its user interaction performances. The experimental results show that both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth have an impact on the ZigBee communication. Considering the complex scene of home and building, ZigBee multihop communications are set to reduce the packet loss probability. In addition, an event-level-based transmission control strategy is proposed, in which the packet loss probability of wireless network is reduced by controlling the transmission priority of different levels of monitoring events, and optimizing the ZigBee wireless network channel occupancy. Note to Practitioners—The IoT in home and building automation has become a hot topic, and embedded intelligent home gateway is an important part of intelligent home system which mainly responsible for data exchange and protocol conversion between the node layer and the user client tier. In a wireless home network, intelligent home gateway mainly supports the wireless interfaces of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ZigBee, and all of these wireless technologies work at the frequency band of 2.4 GHz, and among them, ZigBee technology is generally in the continuous working state. Hence, the adverse impact of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on ZigBee wireless network is purpose for evaluation, which relating to the popularization of home wireless networks. This paper proposes a multi-interface gateway design method, the ZigBee networking process, an interaction principle for interference verification, and an ELT-based interactive control mechanism, respectively. A testbed of an interference-aware wireless network which includes the gateway prototype has also been created for performance evaluation. Node-to-node spacing, packet loss error and energy consumption performance tests have been done to realize the optimization of deployment and distribution of the home networking nodes. We present a distributed stable protocol for local broadcast in multi-hop wireless networks, where packets are injected to the nodes continuously, and each node needs to quickly disseminate the injected packets to all its neighbors within a given communication range $R$. We investigate the maximum packet injection rate and the minimum packet latency that can be achieved in a stable protocol. This paper assumes the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) interference model, which reflects more accurately the physical characteristics of the wireless interference, such as fading and signal accumulation, than conventional local interference models, e.g., graph-based models. More specifically, we present a stable protocol that can handle both stochastic and adversarial injection patterns. The protocol is asymptotically optimal in terms of both injection rate and packet latency. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first one studying the properties of stable protocols for the basic primitive of local broadcast in a multi-hop setting under SINR. Our proposed protocol utilizes a static local broadcast algorithm as a subroutine. This static algorithm is of independent interest, and it closes the $O(\log n)$ gap between the upper and lower bounds for static local broadcast. The next generation of mobile communication has progressed toward the deployment of small cells to meet the growing demands of increased capacity and QoS as compared to the conventional method, where all the computations were performed by the base station (BS)'s only. To reduce burden at the BS side, small cells deployment has been stressed upon, thus resulting in the formation of ultradense networks (UDN) having high concentration of small cells (e.g., picocell, femtocell, hotspots) and as a counter effect of which distance between two small cells is reduced to a greater extent. With such a close association of cells in UDN, the probability of frequent handovers also increases abruptly. As a result, the chances for attacker to spoof the bandwidth also increases many folds. In this paper, we have analyzed SNR, signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, and channel quality information channel parameters, such that the position of moving users at which handover is initiated in picocell deployment of UDN can be traced out successfully or region where the probability of attackers presence is high. Signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) is an important index for wireless communications. This paper shows a method to derive spreading sequences utilized in code division multiple access systems as the solutions of the non-linear programming: maximize SINR. To this end, we consider a frequency-selective wide-sense-stationary uncorrelated-scattering channel and obtain the worst case of SINR. In the course of the evaluation, we derive an expression of SINR, whose main terms consist of periodic correlation terms and odd periodic correlation terms. Also, we show a relation between SINR and mean square correlations. With our expression, we obtain the problem: maximize SINR. Since this problem is not convex, we obtain the relaxed problem with a semidefinite relaxation technique. From this relaxed problem, we obtain the approximated solutions and evaluate the bit error rate for the solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper characterizes the performance in terms of queueing stability of a network composed of multiple MIMO transmitter-receiver pairs taking into account the dynamic traffic pattern and the probing/feedback cost. We adopt a centralized scheduling scheme that selects a number of active pairs in each time-slot. We consider that the transmitters apply interference alignment (IA) technique if two or more pairs are active, whereas in the special case where one pair is active point-to-point MIMO singular value decomposition (SVD) is used. We consider a time-division duplex (TDD) system where transmitters acquire their channel state information (CSI) by decoding the pilot sequences sent by the receivers. Since global CSI knowledge is required for IA, the transmitters have also to exchange their estimated CSIs over a backhaul of limited capacity (i.e. imperfect case). Under this setting, we characterize in this paper the stability region of the system under both the imperfect and perfect (i.e. unlimited backhaul) cases, then we examine the gap between these two resulting regions. Further, under each case we provide a centralized probing policy that achieves the max stability region. These stability regions and scheduling policies are given for the symmetric system, where all the path loss coefficients are equal to each other, as well as for the general system. For the symmetric system, we provide the conditions under which IA yields a queueing stability gain compared to SVD. Under the general system, the adopted scheduling policy is of a high computational complexity for moderate numbers of pairs, consequently we propose an approximate policy that has a reduced complexity but that achieves only a fraction of the system stability region. It is known that superposition signaling in Gaussian interference networks is capable of improving the achievable rate region. However, the problem of maximizing the rate gain offered by superposition signaling is computationally prohibitive, even in the simplest case of two-user single-input single-output interference networks. This paper examines superposition signaling for the general multiple-input multiple-output broadcast Gaussian interference networks. The problem of maximizing either the sum rate or the minimal user’s rate under superposition signaling and dirty paper coding is solved by a computationally efficient path-following procedure, which requires only a convex quadratic program for each iteration but ensures convergence at least to a locally optimal solution.
