This paper reports the results of thermal spallation experiments on specially dried shale samples with 3 bedding orientations (0°, 45° and 90°) under 3 flame temperatures (899 °C, 1243 °C and 1559 °C) and the 3D thermal elastic finite element modelling. Under open flame heating, continuous spallation is observed with ejection of various spalls and popping sounds. After a period of spallation, tensile fractures are formed in the samples and grow perpendicular to the heating surface, except for a sample with bedding orientation of 90° under the low temperature. Increasing flame temperature promotes ejection, popping sounds and spallation rate, but reduces the spallation starting time, spallation duration, depression diameter and depression depth. The model shows that heating induces compressive stress in the surface layer and tensile stresses beneath it. The tensile stress is found to be sufficient to generate large tensile fractures. The ratio between the induced compressive and tensile stresses increases with increasing spallation depth but little affected by the flame temperature. The spallation compressive stress increases with temperature from 29 to 51% of the uniaxial compressive strength. This stress is shown to be sufficient to cause buckling of thin layers separated from the bulk of the rock. The size of the buckling layer is smaller than the size of the spallation zone leading to a mosaic pattern seen on the surface after spallation. Abstract: The eastern and western Himalayan syntaxes are crustal-scale antiforms whose metamorphic evolution is coeval in the India–Asia collisional history. Finite element modelling of lithospheric shortening and the resulting crustal-scale folds have previously been used to debate the structural conditions for the development of such structures. However, numerical models could not account for the metamorphic evolution associated with folding. In continuation of previous work, we present two-dimensional finite element modelling of lithospheric shortening in which thermal effects are implemented. The new models are consistent with earlier interpretations that crustal folding is the plausible mechanism that shaped the two Himalayan syntaxes. They further lend support to the concept that lithospheric buckling is a basic response to large-scale continental shortening and an efficient mountain building process. Introducing viscous shear heating shows, however, that the buckling mode shifts to a thrusting mode within few % shortening, depending on the initial thermal/rheological structure of the deforming lithosphere. The change to the thrusting mode prohibits further fold amplification and lateral fold propagation. This may explain why, in continental lithosphere, crustal-scale folds are isolated whereas regular, periodic crustal fold trains are rare. Focusing deformation on through-limbs thrust zones accompanies the establishment of inverted metamorphic gradients. These results offer new working hypotheses on how large thrusts like the Himalaya Main Central Thrust nucleate. Results further show that the thermal structure of the lithosphere strongly controls three fundamental deformation and metamorphic modes: (1) a cold lithosphere mainly deforms by thermally activated thrusting and exhibits large areas with significant tectonic overpressures (twice lithostatic); (2) a warm lithosphere is essentially buckled and significant tectonic overpressure builds up in the upper crust and (3) a hot lithosphere tends to thicken homogenously and mainly records lithostatic pressures below the upper crust. The accretion of magmatic arcs gives rise to elongate, linear orogens and is a key process in forming new continental crust. Many Precambrian continents are, however, presently equidimensional or have large areas without any clear linearity, such as the central part of the Palaeoproterozoic Svecofennian Orogen (1.92-1.77 Ga). One way of forming an equidimensional continental domain is by buckling of a linear orogen about vertical axes of rotation into one or more coupled oroclines. Here, we reinterpret existing data and demonstrate the occurrence of coupled Bothnian oroclines in the Svecofennian Orogen. Palinspastic restoration of the southern and northern Bothnian oroclines brings a 1000-km-long segment of the Svecofennian Orogen into an originally linear, NW-striking geometry that restores the lithological belts, metamorphic zones and structural vergences to a common direction, and which indicates that the orogen consists of a SW-facing arc, which has been shortened along NE-verging folds and thrust faults. The Scythian Platform (ScP) with a heterogeneous basement of Baikalian-Variscan- Cimmerian age is located between the East European Craton (EEC) on the north and the Crimean-Caucasus orogenic belt and the Black Sea (BS) Basin on the south. In order to get new constrains on the basin architecture and crustal structure of the ScP and a better understanding of the tectonic processes and evolution of the southern margin of the EEC during Mesozoic and Cenozoic time, a 630-km-long seismic wide-angle refraction and reflection (WARR) profile DOBRE-5 was acquired in 2011 October. It crosses in a W-E direction the Fore-Dobrudja Trough, the Odessa Shelf of the BS and the Crimean Plain. The field acquisition included eight chemical shot points located every 50 km and recorded by 215 stations placed every ~2.0 km on the land. In addition, the offshore data from existing profile 26, placed in the Odessa Shelf, were used. The obtained seismic model shows clear lateral segmentation of the crust within the study region on four domains: the Fore-Dobrudja Domain (km 20-160), an offshore domain of the Karkinit Trough at the Odessa Shelf of the BS (km 160-360), an onshore domain of the Central Crimean Uplift (Crimean Plain, km 360-520) and the Indolo-Kuban Trough at the Kerch Peninsula (km 520-620) that is the easternmost part of the Crimea. Two contrasting domains of the ScP within the central part of the DOBRE-5 profile, the Karkinit Trough and the Central Crimean Uplift, may represent different stages of the ScP formation. A deep Karkinit Trough with an underlying high-velocity (>7.16 km s-1) lower crust body suggests its rifting-related origin during Early Cretaceous time. The Central Crimean Uplift represents a thick (up to 47 km) crustal domain consisting of three layers with velocities 5.8-6.4, 6.5-6.6 and 6.7-7.0 kms-1, which could be evidence of this part of the ScP originating on the crust of Precambrian craton (EEC). The thick heterogeneous basement of the Central Crimean Uplift shows inclusions of granitic bodies associated with magmatic activity related with Variscan orogeny within the ScP. General bending and crustal scale buckling of the Central Crimean Uplift with a wavelength of 230 km could be an effect of the Alpine compressional tectonics in the adjacent Crimean Mountains. The extended/rifted continental margin of the ScP (EEC) at the Odessa Shelf and buckling/uplifted domain of the Central Crimean Uplift affected by compressional tectonics, are separated by the N-S oriented Western Crimean Fault. The crust of the southern margin of the EEC is separated from the ScP, which originated on the EEC crust tectonised and reworked during the Palaeozoic-Mesozoic, by the crustal fault of ~W-E orientation, which corresponds with the Golitsyn Fault observed at the surface between the EEC and the ScP. The Fore-Dobrudja Domain with a thick (>10 km) heterogeneous basement and two subhorizontal layers in the crystalline crust (with velocities 6.2-6.3 and 6.4-6.65 km s-1) differs from the ScP crust and its origin could be very similar to that of the Trans-European Suture Zone and Palaeozoic West European Platform. Evidence of the lateral compression of the Earth's crust is apparent from folds and faults observed in rock, and the mechanics describing their development is well established in the fields of structural geology and tectonics. This paper describes similar structures in soils that developed in multilayered varved clay under the side slopes and toe of an embankment due to the nonuniform loading. Using analytical methods derived for the buckling of thin plates of alternating high and low moduli, predictions of wavelengths and the critical stresses to initiate folding were determined, and found to correlate with field and laboratory measurements. When these conditions occur, the resulting fabric changes have implications for slope stability modeling and the interpretation of field monitoring observations. This includes the ability of the clay to sustain large strains as it transitions from a highly anisotropic macrofabric to a relatively homogeneous material, without undergoing shear failure. Purpose. Mantle density models are key tools for understanding the fundamental geological and physical processes occurring within the Earth and are essential to our scientific and applied understanding of the planet. Methodology. The tasks were solved by a complex research method, including analysis and generalization of literary and patent sources, analytical, experimental studies, using computer and mathematical modelling methods. Findings. One-dimensional models simplify the mantle density distribution by assuming that it is uniform only in the vertical direction. This limitation does not allow for horizontal variations in mantle density, which may be important on a regional scale. 3D models are more complex and require more data and computational resources, so their use may be limited. In this study, we present a quasi-three-dimensional model of mantle density beneath the Ukrainian Shield. This 3D model is obtained using a basic set of one-dimensional seismic tomographic velocity models calculated for 21 mantle domains in the depth range from 50 to 2,600 km. The process of converting the P-wave velocity model into a density model includes the following stages: 1) determining seismic boundaries in the mantle based on P-wave velocity curves for each mantle domain; 2) creating a synthetic mantle model beneath the Ukrainian Shield for the P,S-wave velocity curves; 3) solving the Adams-Williamson equation for each domain, considering polynomial corrections to extract heterogeneities during its solution; 4) analysing existing models by comparing the calculated gravitational potential at the central point of the Ukrainian Shield as the standard reference for selecting one of 5 reference models. Here, we focus on the final stages of constructing the mantle density model by: 1) balancing the mass of the upper and lower mantle for each domain when determining density using the Adams-Williamson equation and introducing polynomial corrections; 2) calculating densities for each of the 21 mantle domains and their 3D integration. Originality. The obtained mantle-density model of the Ukrainian Shield aligns well with the division of the mantle into three main layers: lithosphere, upper mantle, and lower mantle. Each of the mantle’s structural layers has its representation pattern in density heterogeneities. Anomalies of decreased density in the lithosphere of the Ukrainian Shield correlate with thermal anomalies, whereas anomalies of increased density correspond to tectonic zones dividing its megablocks. Practical value. Regions of increased density gradient are associated with mantle thrust faults, which in some cases can be boundaries between different petrological formations and serve as channels for magma ascent into the Earth’s crust at certain stages of geological development of the Ukrainian shield and, in turn, be sources of minerals. A compressively stressed poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) film with a sputtered gold film can buckle owing to the difference between the Young's modulus of the PDMS film and that of the gold film. The instability of stress is observed at the interface between materials with different Young's modulus. The experiment conducted in this study revealed the important factors that affect the evolution of strips at certain angles at which tensile stress is applied to the elastomer with a ripple pattern. Strips cannot withstand shear stress applied in two different directions simultaneously, resulting in the formation of grids at other angles. Therefore, a dislocation-like movement was observed, proving that Y type dislocations-like exist as well as the displacement of the earth's crust. The fractured surfaces on top of the gold film helped form a pyramid-like pattern. The movement of the dislocation-like and herringbone patterns was recorded using an optical microscope. Abstract: Peak lithospheric strength should reside in the rocks that, under the applied stress, cannot either creep (due to low temperature) or break (due to high confining pressure). The greatest resistance comes from dry olivine/pyroxene-rich upper mantle/lowermost crust at Moho conditions (400–600 °C and >1 GPa). We have conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the importance of the unbreakable core of the lithosphere in between its brittle and ductile parts and conclude that it can control the large-scale lithospheric deformation pattern under shortening. Regardless of the thickness of the unbreakable core, it acts as a restraining layer that is easily flexed but is unstretchable. This eliminates large scale brittle faulting or homogeneous thickening as available shortening modes and results in irregular wrinkling of the unbreakable layer. We discuss geodynamic implications of our laboratory experiments and advocate studies of large scale buckling of the lithosphere as a relevant shortening mode. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Although parts of the lithosphere may be expected to behave elastically over certain timescales, this effect is commonly ignored in models of large-scale mantle dynamics. Recently it has been demonstrated that elasticity, and in particular viscoelasticity, may have a significant effect on the buckling instability and on the creation of lithospheric-scale shearzones. It is, however, less clear whether elasticity also has an effect on mantle convection and density-driven lithospheric instabilities. The focus of this work is, therefore, to study the effects of elasticity on the two-layer Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability, consisting of a Maxwell viscoelastic layer overlying a viscous layer of lower density. We analyse this problem by performing systematic numerical simulations that are compared with newly derived analytical solutions. It is demonstrated that elasticity can be important for certain parameter combinations; it leads to a speedup of the RT instability. The cause for this speedup is that the RT instability is only sensitive to the viscous fraction of deformation in the viscoelastic layer. Elasticity reduces the viscous fraction of deformation at timescales shorter than the Maxwell relaxation time ( , where μ is the viscosity and G the elastic shear module). For plate tectonics on Earth, the parameters are such that the effect of elasticity on instability growth is negligible for most boundary conditions. Whereas elasticity does not (or only slightly) change the timescales for lithospheric detachment of the upper mantle, it does significantly alter the response and stress build-up in the overlying crust. Numerical simulations illustrate this effect for lithospheric detachment and show that peak stresses in a viscoelastic crust are smaller than stresses that develop in a viscous crust. Moreover, if the timescale for delamination of the mantle lithosphere is equal or smaller than the Maxwell relaxation time of the crust, the topography of the crust is increased compared to viscous models. The article focuses on the deformation and strain-stress analysis of the Earth's crust under external thermal loading. More specifically, the influence of cyclic changes in the surface temperature field on the stress and displacement inside the crust over a two-year time span is investigated. The finite element program MSC.Marc Mentat was used to calculate the stresses and displacements. For practical analysis reasons, the Earth's crust is simplified as a planar, piecewise homogeneous, isotropic model (plane strain), and time-varying temperature functions of illumination (thermal radiation) from the Sun are considered in the local isotropy sections of the model. Interaction between the Earth's crust and mantle is defined by the Winkler elastic foundation. By applying a probabilistic approach (Monte Carlo Method), a new stochastic model of displacements and stresses and new information on crustal displacements relative to the Earth's mantle were obtained. Density instabilities in the lithosphere can founder gravitationally via viscous dripping and decoupling from overlying crust. The lithospheric dripping concept has been invoked across the globe, but the diversity of crustal effects, observable evidence, and tectonic settings involved in dripping remain underexplored. Here, we synthesize numerical and analogue modeling studies and geologic data from the literature, including all proposed lithospheric dripping events to‐date. We argue that two distinct styles of dripping can occur depending on crustal strength (relative to that of the mantle lithosphere). Near‐surface contraction and subsidence of strong crusts contrasts with near‐surface extension and uplift of weak crusts. We discuss these events in terms of tectonic setting, timing, size, and the main types of data associated with each event. We also find that lithospheric dripping is associated with a distinct suite of geological observations including sedimentological, structural, volcanic, and geophysical data, which can be used to distinguish strong crusts from weak crusts. We find 27 events for which lithospheric dripping is a key hypothesis, including 9 with clear evidence for strong‐crust dripping and 3 with clear evidence of weak‐crust dripping. We review emerging research methods have the potential to detect the signals of dripping in the geologic and geophysical record, and we suggest additional techniques in light of our strong‐crust versus weak‐crust framework. The diverse tectonic settings and inferred consequences of these lithospheric drips, if confirmed, would demand a shift in our understanding of continental geology to emphasize the role of vertical removal of continental lithosphere. Plain Language Summary: If part of the lithosphere (Earth's crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle) increases in density, it may become heavier than the underlying mantle and sink, or founder. Foundering results in the removal of blobs of lithosphere from overlying crust, a process called dripping. Dripping may have occurred in several locations across the globe, but the effects it is capable of producing are not well understood. We synthesize numerical models of dripping with studies of real‐world locations and compile available evidence to better understand the dripping process. We suggest that key observable effects are driven by the strength of the crust relative to the foundering lithosphere. In particular, when the crust is weak and able to flow in response to a lithospheric drip, complex patterns of deformation and sedimentation can result. For the 27 events that have been discussed to date, 9 have clear evidence for strong‐crust behavior, and 3 for a weak‐crust behavior. This framework will help researchers understand what lithospheric dripping looks like in geological and geophysical data, and we discuss avenues for further research on this topic. From a joint analysis of fundamental mode Rayleigh wave group velocities and P‐wave receiver functions, we derive a new, high‐resolution 3D shear‐wave velocity (Vs) model for the crust and uppermost mantle of the Iranian Plateau. The thickest crust (>55 km) is located beneath the Sanandaj‐Sirjan Zone and the deforming belts of Alborz‐Binalud‐Kopet Dag Mountains, whereas regions of lower topography/deformation (e.g., central Iran and the Lut Block), and the regions of younger deformation such as the Makran Accretionary Wedge and the Zagros Simply Folded Belt (SFB) have a thinner (<45 km) crust. Our model reveals a low‐Vs tongue‐shaped feature, indicating the underthrusting of the Arabian crust beneath central Iran. In the central Zagros, the underthrusting of the Arabian crust is steeper, resulting in a narrower deforming zone (∼150 km) and a thicker crust (∼60–65 km), compared to the NW or SE Zagros where the deforming zone is broader (∼250 km) and the crust is thinner (∼55–60 km). Regions of low‐Vs in the upper crust correspond to regions of thick sediments; the South Caspian Basin, the Zagros SFB and foreland basin of the Zagros, and the Makran Subduction Wedge. The subcrustal Rayleigh wave azimuthal anisotropy of the Plateau shows a rather uniform and smoothly‐varying pattern. In the NW Zagros the crustal and subcrustal pattern of anisotropy agrees with that previously estimated from the shear‐wave core phases, implying that the whole lithosphere deforms coherently, but for other regions (e.g., the western Alborz and Kopet Dag), the anisotropic pattern does not support a coherent deformational fabric throughout the lithosphere. Plain Language Summary: We use joint analyses of surface and body wave seismic data to investigate the crustal and uppermost mantle wave‐speed structure of the Iranian Plateau, the region of relatively rapid deformation and high‐topography resulting from the collision of the Arabian and Eurasian Plates. The variations in the wave‐speed and thickness of our crustal model reflect the main geological and physical features of the crust. In general, thicker crust (>55 km) underlies the elevated, deforming zones (e.g., the Sanandaj‐Sirjan Zone and the Talesh‐Alborz‐Binalud Mountains), while thinner crust (<45 km) occurs under the lower elevation, more stable regions of the Plateau (e.g., central Iran and the Lut Block). In the Zagros region, our model reveals a low shear wave‐speed, tongue‐shaped feature extending beneath the central Plateau, indicating the underthrusting of the Arabian crust. The low wave‐speed regions in the shallow crust correspond to the thick (∼10–20 km) sedimentary cover (e.g., the South Caspian Basin, the Simply Folded Belt and foreland basin of the Zagros Mountains, and the Makran Subduction). Geodynamic modelling provides a powerful tool to investigate processes in the Earth's crust, mantle, and core that are not directly observable. However, numerical models are inherently subject to the assumptions and simplifications on which they are based. In order to use and review numerical modelling studies appropriately, one needs to be aware of the limitations of geodynamic modelling as well as its advantages. Here, we present a comprehensive yet concise overview of the geodynamic modelling process applied to the solid Earth from the choice of governing equations to numerical methods, model setup, model interpretation, and the eventual communication of the model results. We highlight best practices and discuss their implementations including code verification, model validation, internal consistency checks, and software and data management. Thus, with this perspective, we encourage high-quality modelling studies, fair external interpretation, and sensible use of published work. We provide ample examples, from lithosphere and mantle dynamics specifically, and point out synergies with related fields such as seismology, tectonophysics, geology, mineral physics, planetary science, and geodesy. We clarify and consolidate terminology across geodynamics and numerical modelling to set a standard for clear communication of modelling studies. All in all, this paper presents the basics of geodynamic modelling for first-time and experienced modellers, collaborators, and reviewers from diverse backgrounds to (re)gain a solid understanding of geodynamic modelling as a whole. Meteor impacts can induce unique pressure‐dependent structural changes in minerals due to the propagation of shock waves. Plagioclase—ubiquitous throughout the Earth's crust, extraterrestrial bodies, and meteorites—is commonly used for reconstructing the impact history and conditions of the parent bodies. However, there have been unresolved inconsistencies in the interpretation of shock transformations across previous studies: The pressure at which amorphization begins and the process by which it occurs is the subject of ongoing debate. Here, we utilize time‐resolved in situ X‐ray diffraction (XRD) to probe the phase transformation pathway of plagioclase during shock compression at a sub‐nanosecond timescale. Direct amorphization begins at pressures much lower than what was previously assumed, just above the Hugoniot elastic limit of 5 GPa, with full amorphization to a high‐density amorphous phase, observed at 32(10) GPa and 20 ns. Along the western border of the Sierra Nevada microplate, the San Andreas fault (California, United States) is comprised of three segments. Two (north and south segments) are locked and support large earthquakes (e.g., the M 7.7 1906 San Francisco and the M 7.8 1857 Fort Tejon earthquakes), while the central segment, from Parkfield to San Juan Bautista, is creeping. Based on mechanical models, we show that the late Pliocene-Quaternary convective removal (delamination) of the southern Sierra Nevada mantle lithosphere and associated uplift of the Sierra Nevada Mountains causes the Great Valley upper crust to deform by flexure and buckling. Additional three-dimensional flexural models imply that the local flexural bulge overlaps with the creeping segment of the fault system, while geological observations indicate that the local weakening of the San Andreas fault started at the same time that the Sierra Nevada started its recent phase of uplift. We argue that bending stresses promote lithostatic pore pressure to occur in the depth range of 7-15 km, causing the effective strength of the fault to vanish, and locally favoring creep. Our results suggest for the first time that earthquake cycles along a major plate boundary may be influenced by convective instabilities in the adjacent upper mantle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The Sudbury Basin is a non-cylindrical fold basin occupying the central portion of the Sudbury Impact Structure. The impact structure lends itself excellently to explore the structural evolution of continental crust containing a circular region of long-term weakness. In a series of scaled analogue experiments various model crustal configurations were shortened horizontally at a constant rate. In mechanically weakened crust, model basins formed that mimic several first-order structural characteristics of the Sudbury Basin: (1) asymmetric, non-cylindrical folding of the Basin, (2) structures indicating concentric shortening around lateral basin termini and (3) the presence of a zone of strain concentration near the hinge zones of model basins. Geometrically and kinematically this zone corresponds to the South Range Shear Zone of the Sudbury Basin. According to our experiments, this shear zone is a direct mechanical consequence of basin formation, rather than the result of thrusting following folding. Overall, the models highlight the structurally anomalous character of the Sudbury Basin within the Paleoproterozoic Eastern Penokean Orogen. In particular, our models suggest that the Basin formed by pure shear thickening of crust, whereas transpressive deformation prevailed elsewhere in the orogen. The model basin is deformed by thickening and non-cylindrical synformal buckling, while conjugate transpressive shear zones propagated away from its lateral tips. This is consistent with pure shear deformation of a weak circular inclusion in a strong matrix. Earthquake is a natural disaster that occurs when the Earth's crust moves suddenly. Every year, hundreds of earthquakes strike various parts of the globe. According to previous research, buildings that are built on sloped terrain are the most susceptible to earthquakes. This is attributable to the different heights of the columns on the ground floor. By changing the height of the column at the base of a 2-D Conventional RCC Frame and a Special Confined RCC Frame, an experimental investigation was carried out in this study. The parameters like load verses deflection, crack width and stiffness degradation was used to draw comparison between the Conventional RCC Frame and Special confined RCC Frame under Reverse Cyclic Loading by using Push and Pull Jack. Hysteresis curve clearly shows that Special Confining reinforcement provided for the column throughout the span because of columns with varying stiffness provides additional strength and performance against lateral force by dissipating energy. The complete gravity data set from France and part of the neighboring countries has been analyzed to compute the topography of the Moho undulations. This work is based on an improved filtering technique and an appropriate assumed density contrast between the crust and the upper mantle. Comparison with deep seismic refraction data reveals that this relief map expresses the continuity and geometry of the Moho undulations better than the sparsely distributed seismic refraction data in France. This gravity Moho map, though may not give absolute depths at places, provides a far better correlation with surface geology than the result from other geophysical techniques. Four domains have been recognized: (a) the Alpine domain where all the Moho undulations are concentric with the Alps; (b) the Armorican domain in which all the undulations are north-west/south-east oriented; (c) the Pyrenean domain, in which the undulations are parallel with the Mountain chain; and (d) the Massif Central Domain which does not show clear structural orientation because of the influence of the strong heat flow located at the lower crust/upper mantle interface. Study of the topography and of the superficial structures associated with these undulations reveals that the undulations delineated in the Alpine Domain result from the Tertiary compression which shaped the Alps. The Armorican Domain was first created during the Lower to Middle Cretaceous opening of the Bay of Biscay. It is now slightly affected by the Tertiary to Quaternary closure of this Bay. The Pyrenean Domain was successively shaped by the Lower Cretaceous oblique opening of the Bay of Biscay and by the Upper Cretaceous to Eocene northward displacement of Spain. Comparison between the Moho undulations map and the stress map of France reveals that most of the undulations are perpendicular to the actual shortening directions. This observation suggests that the Mesozoic, Cenozoic and Quaternary stress directions were roughly the same. Massif Central is characterized by the convergence of these three sets of undulations. Its Post-Oligocene uplift was probably the result of the converging stresses recognized in the three surrounding domains. When the Moho undulations and the topography are compared, two types of periodic crustal instabilities can be recognized. One corresponds to the buckling of the crust developed under compression, the other to boudinage which was associated with extension. Both phenomena show a typical wavelength of 200–250 km which is in agreement with the results of the actual physical and numerical modeling currently available. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We present a 3D model of the main crustal boundaries beneath the Campanian region and the onshore and offshore surrounding areas, based on high-resolution potential field data. Our main objective is the definition of the main structural interfaces in the whole Campanian region from gravity and magnetic data, thanks to their ability to define them on a regional and continuous way. The complex morphology of the Mesozoic carbonate platform, which is fundamental to constrain the top of geothermal reservoir, was reconstructed by inverting the vertical gradient of gravity. We assumed local information from seismic models and boreholes to improve the model. We modeled the deep crustal structures by spectral analysis of Bouguer gravity and magnetic data. The inferred depth estimates indicate a shallow crystalline basement below the Tyrrhenian crust and the Apulian foreland and a significant depression beneath the Bradanic foredeep. The map of the Moho boundary shows a NE-SE verging trough below the Southern Apennine chain and two pronounced uplifts beneath the foreland and the Tyrrhenian crust. We also estimated the depth to the magnetic bottom, showing a thick magnetic crust below the mountain chain and shallow depths where the crustal heat flow is high. The models were compared with seismic sections along selected profiles; a good agreement was observed, despite of some inherent lower resolution for the gravity modelling from spectral methods. The regional covering and the continuity of our estimated crustal interfaces make it a new and valid reference for further geological, geophysical and geothermal studies, especially in areas such as northern and eastern Campania, where there is an incomplete geophysical and geological information. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of reinforcement, inhomogeneity and initial stress on the propagation of shear waves. The problem consists of magneto poroelastic medium sandwiched between self-reinforced medium and poroelastic half space. Using Biot's theory of wave propagation, the frequency equation is obtained. Design/methodology/approach: Shear wave propagation in magneto poroelastic medium embedded between a self-reinforced medium and poroelastic half space is investigated. This particular setup is quite possible in the Earth crust. All the three media are assumed to be inhomogeneous under initial stress. The significant effects of initial stress and inhomogeneity parameters of individual media have been studied. Findings: Phase velocity is computed against wavenumber for various values of self-reinforcement, heterogeneity parameter and initial stress. Classical elasticity results are deduced as a particular case of the present study. Also in the absence of inhomogeneity and initial stress, frequency equation is discussed. Graphical representation is made to exhibit the results. Originality/value: Shear wave propagation in magneto poroelastic medium embedded between a self-reinforced medium, and poroelastic half space are investigated in presence of initial stress, and inhomogeneity parameter. For heterogeneous poroelastic half space, the Whittaker's solution is obtained. From the numerical results, it is observed that heterogeneity parameter, inhomogeneity parameter and reinforcement parameter have significant influences on the wave characteristics. In addition, frequency equation is discussed in absence of inhomogeneity and initial stress. For the validation purpose, numerical results are also computed for a particular case. Gravitational instabilities exert a crucial role on the Earth dynamics and in particular on its differentiation. The Earth's crust can be considered as a multilayered fluid with different densities and viscosities, which may become unstable in particular with variations in temperature. With the specific aim to quantify crustal scale polydiapiric instabilities, we test here two codes, JADIM and OpenFOAM, which use a volume-of-fluid (VOF) method without interface reconstruction, and compare them with the geodynamics community code ASPECT, which uses a tracking algorithm based on compositional fields. The VOF method is well-known to preserve strongly deforming interfaces. Both JADIM and OpenFOAM are first tested against documented two and three-layer Rayleigh–Taylor instability configurations in 2-D and 3-D. 2-D and 3-D results show diapiric growth rates that fit the analytical theory and are found to be slightly more accurate than those obtained with ASPECT. We subsequently compare the results from VOF simulations with previously published Rayleigh–Bénard analogue and numerical experiments. We show that the VOF method is a robust method adapted to the study of diapirism and convection in the Earth's crust, although it is not computationally as fast as ASPECT. OpenFOAM is found to run faster than, and conserve mass as well as JADIM. Finally, we provide a preliminary application to the polydiapiric dynamics of the orogenic crust of Naxos Island (Greece) at about 16 Myr, and propose a two-stages scenario of convection and diapirism. The timing and dimensions of the modelled gravitational instabilities not only corroborate previous estimates of timing and dimensions associated to the dynamics of this hot crustal domain, but also bring preliminary insight on its rheological and tectonic contexts. A novel method is implemented to invert Rayleigh and Love wave dispersion curves of all paths jointly for 3‐D shear wave velocity and radial anisotropy simultaneously without intermediate steps. We use the method to derive high‐precision crustal shear wave velocity and radial anisotropy models around the eastern Himalayan syntaxis using ambient noise dispersion data (5–40 s). Results show that the crust can be divided into several subregions with different rigidity and preferred mineral alignment orientation depth‐dependently. In the middle crust, combined with other geophysical observations, 3‐D geometry of two continuous branches of eastward channelized weak zones is outlined in detail. Both branches of the weak zone are blocked by the high velocity zone with radial anisotropy of Vsh>Vsv at around 96–97°E. In the upper crust, the radial anisotropy model depicts a complex pattern, which is associated with the ongoing surface uplifting and shear strain rate distribution. Oroclines are map‐view deformation of Earth's crust resulting from bending of quasi‐linear elements. The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is one of the largest and long‐lived accretionary orogens in the world and mainly consists of the Kazakhstan and Tuva–Mongolian oroclines. However, the mechanism of the oroclines is still in debate. Therefore, in this paper, we combine some investigation of high bathymetric relief resistance to subduction, review oroclinal bending models of the Kazakhstan Orocline, and propose a tentative model that involves asymmetric rollback in response to seamounts subduction and accretion, followed by bending associated with the convergence of the Siberian and Tarim cratons. Moreover, the role of pinning due to seamount and ridge subduction is probably more important than the convergence of continents in the CAOB. This model is compatible with the occurrence of seamounts, the spatial migration of intra‐oceanic arcs, and the development of multiple rollback processes during amalgamation of Eurasia. However, only geochemical and geochronological data will enable definition of the seamounts in CAOB so far, without much matching structural data. An effective method for identifying the tectonic-magmatic causes of metamorphism is the reconstruction and analysis of P–T–t paths, which can be used to develop a model of rock evolution with time in the "pressure–temperature–time" coordinates. This approach is most widely used in interpreting the development of orogens with a polycyclic history, where different types of metamorphism are combined in contrasting geodynamic settings. The progress in this direction in recent years is due to the improvement of the instrumental base, precision methods for the study of matter – in situ local microanalysis and dating of zonal metamorphic minerals, and the computing apparatus of geothermobarometric procedures using multi-equilibria. The article discusses these issues on the example of geological complexes of various geodynamic nature, which are typical for different types of metamorphism. Reaction microtextures, chemical zoning in minerals, geochronological dating as well as the trajectory of the Р-Т paths provide evidence for the polymetamorphic history. A generalized P-T diagram was built using data on well-studied metamorphic complexes, which are characterized by the simultaneous presence of prograde and retrograde segments of a P-T path. Diagnostic P-T-t paths characteristic of rocks formed in zones of active tectogenesis—under collision, extension and in shear zones of the earth's crust—have been established. This paper discusses some of the ambiguous interpretations of P-T-t paths in areas with simultaneous manifestation of different metamorphic processes, which requires further research. Floods in India, which were once mostly confined to southern part of the Himalayan region, have now started spreading over to many regions of India, including the urban conglomerations and the desert tracts of Rajasthan too. The flood that occurred in Kerala during August 2018 is one such major disaster that caused huge damages to man, infrastructure and properties, estimated to the worth of 200 billion USD. Besides, they are expected to cause a chain of other hazards, and one among these is reservoir-induced seismicity (RIS). The RIS occurs in deep reservoirs with high water column. While the water column increases the total stress on the earth crust, the infiltration causes pore pressure increase which in turn decreases the effective strength of the earth crust. Such changes in the stress regime cause RIS (earthquake). The rocks of the Western Ghat Mountains of Kerala are highly deformed with folds and faults of Archean/Precambrian tectonics and have undergone morphological modifications during Pleistocene tectonics. The region is also seismically active. Further, the Western Ghats cover vast area in Kerala; almost all the dams and reservoirs are located in the highly folded, fractured, faulted and along the deep valleys of the Western Ghats. In the context of recent August 2018 flood disaster, the probability of RIS has increased. So, GIS analysis was carried out using various geosystems, seismicity, distribution of dams, zones of heavy rainfall 2018 and the flood inundation, which indicates that 50% of the reservoirs are highly prone to RIS. The RIS would have occurred during August 2018 flood itself, but for the release of water from the overflowing reservoirs. However, owing to the proneness of the region to RIS, optimal water management is necessary for the dams and reservoirs of Kerala. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Cenozoic convergence between India and Asia has created Earth's thickest crust in the Pamir‐Tibet Plateau by extreme crustal shortening. Here we study the crustal structure of the Pamir and western Tian Shan, the adjacent margins of the Tajik, Tarim, and Ferghana Basins, and the Hindu Kush, using data collected by temporary seismic experiments. We derive, compare, and combine independent observations from P and S receiver functions. The obtained Moho depth varies from ~40 km below the basins to a double‐normal thickness of 65–75 km underneath the Pamir and Hindu Kush. A Moho doublet—with the deeper interface down to a depth of ~90 km—coincides with the arc of intermediate‐depth seismicity underneath the Pamir, where Asian continental lower crust delaminates and rolls back. The crust beneath most of the Central and South Pamir has a low Vp/Vs ratio (<1.70), suggesting a dominantly felsic composition, probably a result of delamination/foundering of the mafic rocks of the lower crust. Beneath the Cenozoic gneiss domes of the Central and South Pamir, which represent extensional core complexes, the Vp/Vs ratios are moderate to high (~1.75), consistent with the previously observed, midcrustal low‐velocity zones, implying the presence of crustal partial melts. Even higher crustal average Vp/Vs ratios up to 1.90 are found in the sedimentary basins and along the Main Pamir Thrust. The ratios along the latter—the active thrust front of the Pamir—may reflect fluid accumulations within a strongly fractured fault system. Rock rheology and density have first‐order effects on the lithosphere's response to plate tectonic forces at plate boundaries. Changes in these rock properties are controlled by metamorphic transformation processes that are critically dependent on the presence of fluids. At the onset of a continental collision, the lower crust is in most cases dry and strong. However, if exposed to internally produced or externally supplied fluids, the thickened crust will react and be converted into a mechanically weaker lithology by fluid‐driven metamorphic reactions. Fluid introduction is often associated with deep crustal earthquakes. Microstructural evidence, suggest that in strong highly stressed rocks, seismic slip may be initiated by brittle deformation and that wall‐rock damage caused by dynamic ruptures plays a very important role in allowing fluids to enter into contact with dry and highly reactive lower crustal rocks. The resulting metamorphism produces weaker rocks which subsequently deform by viscous creep. Volumes of weak rocks contained in a highly stressed environment of strong rocks may experience significant excursions toward higher pressure without any associated burial. Slow and highly localized creep processes in a velocity strengthening regime may produce mylonitic shear zones along faults initially characterized by earthquake‐generated frictional melting and wall rock damage. However, stress pulses from earthquakes in the shallower brittle regime may kick start new episodes of seismic slip at velocity weakening conditions. These processes indicate that the evolution of the lower crust during continental collisions is controlled by the transient interplay between brittle deformation, fluid‐rock interactions, and creep flow. Plain Language Summary: When continents collide, a mountain range form along the collision zone in an area referred to as an orogenic belt. The evolution of orogenic belts depends on the physical properties of the different layers in the Earth's crust and upper mantle. During a continent‐continent collision, the mechanical strength and density of these layers change. We discuss transformation processes in the lower part of the continental crust during the formation of an orogenic belt. We emphasize the critical role of fluids and show that introduction of fluids to initially dry lower crust is often associated with earthquakes. Earthquakes cause fracturing and fragmentation and allow fluids to migrate into highly reactive dry rocks. This results in the formation of weaker rocks, which subsequently deform slowly along zones where earthquakes initially occurred. Deeply exhumed granulite terranes have long been considered nonrepresentative of lower continental crust largely because their bulk compositions do not match the lower crustal xenolith record. A paradigm shift in our understanding of deep crust has since occurred with new evidence for a more felsic and compositionally heterogeneous lower crust than previously recognized. The >20,000-km2 Athabasca granulite terrane locally provides a >700-Myr-old window into this type of lower crust, prior to being exhumed and uplifted to the surface between 1.9 and 1.7 Ga. We review over 20 years of research on this terrane with an emphasis on what these findings may tell us about the origin and behavior of lower continental crust, in general, in addition to placing constraints on the tectonic evolution of the western Canadian Shield between 2.6 and 1.7 Ga. Mantle-based stresses have been proposed to explain the occurrence of deformation in the interior regions of continental plates, far from the effects of plate boundary processes. We examine how the gravitational removal of a dense mantle lithosphere root may induce deformation of the overlying crust. Simplified numerical models and a theoretical analysis are used to investigate the physical mechanisms for deformation and assess the surface expression of removal. Three behaviours are identified: (1) where the entire crust is strong, stresses from the downwelling mantle are efficiently transferred through the crust. There is little crustal deformation and removal is accompanied by surface subsidence and a negative free-air gravity anomaly. Surface uplift and increased free-air gravity occur after the dense root detaches. (2) If the mid-crust is weak, the dense root creates a lateral pressure gradient in the crust that drives Poiseuille flow in the weak layer. This induces crustal thickening, surface uplift and a minor free-air gravity anomaly above the root. (3) If the lower crust is weak, deformation occurs through pressure-driven Poiseuille flow and Couette flow due to basal shear. This can overthicken the crust, producing a topographic high and a negative free-air gravity anomaly above the root. In the latter two cases, surface uplift occurs prior to the removal of the mantle stress. The modeling results predict that syn-removal uplift will occur if the crustal viscosity is less than ~1021 Pa s, corresponding to temperatures greater than ~400-500 °C for a dry and felsic or wet and mafic composition, and ~900 °C for a dry and mafic composition. If crustal temperatures are lower than this, lithosphere removal is marked by the formation of a basin. These results can explain the variety of surface expressions observed above areas of downwelling mantle. The Grenville Province forms the exhumed remnants of a 1.1 Ga collisional orogeny that telescoped an older continental margin. Terranes with distinct crustal formation ages can be mapped using Nd isotopes, revealing a ramp-flat thrust structure. The ramp is identified by the presence of retrogressed eclogites, and its trajectory is refined using Nd model ages. The main allochthon is locally overlain by the Parry Sound klippe, but is also underlain by a tectonic duplex. Northwest-directed nappes represent remnants of a corrugated thrust sheet, but a ring-shaped remnant was also preserved where the thrust sheet was down-buckled under the dense rocks of Parry Sound domain. A key element of plate tectonics on Earth is that the lithosphere is subducting into the mantle. Subduction results from forces that bend and pull the lithosphere into the interior of the Earth. Once subducted, lithospheric slabs are further modified by dynamic forces in the mantle, and their sinking is inhibited by the increase in viscosity of the lower mantle. These forces are resisted by the material strength of the lithosphere. Using geodynamic models, we investigate several subduction models, wherein we control material strength by setting a maximum viscosity for the surface plates and the subducted slabs independently. We find that models characterized by a dichotomy of lithosphere strengths produce a spectrum of results that are comparable to interpretations of observations of subduction on Earth. These models have strong lithospheric plates at the surface, which promotes Earth-like single-sided subduction. At the same time, these models have weakened lithospheric subducted slabs which can more easily bend to either lie flat or fold into a slab pile atop the lower mantle, reproducing the spectrum of slab morphologies that have been interpreted from images of seismic tomography. This part of the paper addresses the geotectonic interpretation of the velocity model obtained from the results of seismic studies under the DOBRE-4 project in Ukraine. The velocity field does not show distinct lateral changes from the Precambrian platform towards the younger tectonic structures in the southwest. Hence, based on the seismic data alone, it is not possible to recognize the tectonic units that are known on the surface. The Moho has an undulating pattern over an interval with a length of ~150 km. The amplitude of the undulations reaches 8 to 17 km. The similar wavelike behavior, although on a shorter spatial scale and lower amplitude, is also typical of the upper crust and upper mantle. The presence of several separate horizons in the folded crust revealed by the velocity model is consistent with the presence of the folded systems which have different extensions on the different depth levels in the Earth's crust. This situation is believed to be typical of folding on the lithospheric scale and to reflect the rheological stratification of the crust. The DOBRE-4 velocity section of the crust and adjacent part of the mantle promotes a clearer view of the geodynamical model describing the formation of the southwestern part of East European Platform in the Early Precambrian from the plate's tectonic standpoint. Aluminum is the third most abundant element, after oxygen and silicon, and the most abundant metal in Earth's crust. It is widely used in buildings, construction, transport, packaging and general engineering due to its corrosion resistance, durability, insulation capability, structural strength and low-weight, making it the metal of the future. Aluminum is widely used in all UAE construction related projects; however, the sustainability and environmental performance of the aluminum production process is questionable. The production of this metal is associated with many environmental impacts which compromise the sustainable production of aluminum. Aluminum manufacturing is an energy intensive industry and a major contributor to Greenhouse Gases such as CO2, CFC, and PFC. This industry generates huge amounts of waste such as the Bauxite Residue from the Alumina Refinery process and the Spent Pot-Lining (SPL) from the Smelting process. One of the sustainable solutions is to create a sustainable metal whilst also making a positive net impact on the environment over the life cycle of aluminum products. This solution suits UAE because the aluminum industry is on upstream production, with less emphasis on the use of recycling and secondary aluminum production. As an effective tool to control environmental impacts and improve the environmental performance of any production industry, Environment Management System (EMS) is further studied with regards to the aluminum production process. This research investigates the efficiency of the EMS at UAE aluminum production industry to determine its ability to control the industry's impact, and to attain sustainability standards. The aim of this research is to evaluate the efficiency of the existing EMS and to identify the factors affecting implementation of EMS in the UAE aluminum production. The implementation of EMS in the UAE aluminium industry is heavily affected by regulatory compliance and enforcement gap, transparent leadership, accountability, and human factors. Numerical experiments are used in this study to systematically investigate the effects of convergence rate, crustal rheological strength, and lithospheric thermal structure on the dynamics of continental collision. The study focuses on the types, conditions and processes of unstable continental subduction. Modelling results suggest that the development of unstable continental subduction can be promoted by conditions that tend to decrease rheological strength of the lithosphere, such as low crustal rheological strength, 'hot' thermal structure of the lithosphere, or low convergence rate. Unstable subduction mode can be further categorized into three types: (1) multi-stage slab breakoff, (2) continuously 'flowing' of fluid-like slab into the upper mantle, and (3) large-scale detachment of the thickened orogenic root. These three types of unstable continental subduction are respectively associated with (1) a low convergence rate, (2) 'hot' thermal structure of the lithosphere with a high convergence rate, and (3) moderate-high crustal rheological strength with a low convergence rate. It is also revealed that the evolution of crustal melting is dominated by the deformation pattern of continental collision, which is mainly controlled by crustal rheological strength. We have analyzed 18 permanent GPS stations in and around the Indian plate to understand inter- and intraplate deformation patterns of infinitesimal strain variations. Differential deformation pattern along and across strike of the Himalaya shows westward decrease in crustal shortening with strong influence of the local geology. Subduction rate toward the eastern Indian plate boundary decreases drastically from south to north, indicating the development of locking condition. Excluding the western boundary of the Indian plate, which is under strong deformation due to flexuring of crust, the rest part of the Indian plate is rigid. Indo-Gangetic plain plays a key role in mountain building processes. The proposed kinematic model suggests the dominance of tensional forces and compressional forces toward craton margin and mountain front, respectively, with conditions for the development of proto-thrust in the form of step-out structures, south of MFT. Strain analysis shows western and eastern ends of the Himalayan front are under strong extensional and compressional strain, indicating the probability of future earthquakes. Similar high strain conditions also prevail on the west coast of the Indian craton as well Ganga-Brahmaputra Delta and Burma Arc region toward the northeastern corner of the Indian craton. We introduce a regional 3-D structural model of the Barents Sea and Kara Sea region which is the first to combine information on the sediments and the crystalline crust as well as the configuration of the lithospheric mantle. Therefore, we have integrated all available geological and geophysical data, including interpreted seismic refraction and reflection data, seismological data, geological maps and previously published 3-D models into one consistent model. This model resolves four major megasequence boundaries (earliest Eocene, mid-Cretaceous, mid-Jurassic and mid-Permian) the top crystalline crust, the Moho and a newly calculated lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB). The thickness distributions of the corresponding main megasequences delineate five major subdomains (the northern Kara Sea, the southern Kara Sea, the eastern Barents Sea, the western Barents Sea and the oceanic domain comprising the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and the Eurasia Basin). Relating the subsidence histories of these subdomains to the structure of the deeper crust and lithosphere sheds new light on possible causative basin forming mechanisms that we discuss. The depth configuration of the newly calculated LAB and the seismic velocity configuration of the upper mantle correlate with the younger history of this region. The western Barents Sea is underlain by a thinned lithosphere (80 km) resulting from multiple Phanerozoic rifting phases and/or the opening of the NE Atlantic from Paleocene/Eocene times on. Notably, the northwestern Barents Sea and Svalbard are underlain by thinnest continental lithosphere (60 km) and a low-velocity/hot upper mantle that correlates spatially with a region where late Cenozoic uplift was strongest. As opposed to this, the eastern Barents Sea is underlain by a thicker lithosphere (~110-150 km) and a high-velocity/density anomaly in the lithospheric mantle. Dynamic triggering of earthquakes by seismic waves is a robustly observed phenomenon with well-documented examples from over 30 major earthquakes. We are now in a position to use dynamic triggering as a natural experiment to probe the reaction of faults to the known stresses from seismic waves. We show here that dynamic triggering can be used to investigate the distribution of stresses required for failure on faults. In some regions, faults appear to be uniformly distributed over their loading cycles with equal numbers at all possible stresses from failure. Regions under tectonic extension, at the interface between locked and creeping faults, or subject to anthropogenic forcing are most prone to triggered failure. Predictions of future seismicity rates based on seismic wave amplitudes are theoretically possible and may provide similar results to purely stochastic prediction schemes. The underlying mechanisms of dynamic triggering are still unknown. The prolonged triggered sequences require a multistage process such as shear failure from rate-state friction coupled to aseismic creep or continued triggering through a secondary cascade. A ∼400 km long deep crustal reflection seismic survey was acquired in central Victoria, Australia, in 2006. It has provided information on crustal architecture across the western Lachlan Orogen and has greatly added to the understanding of the tectonic evolution. The east-dipping Moyston Fault is confirmed as the suture between the Delamerian and western Lachlan Orogens, and is shown to extend down to the Moho. The Avoca Fault, the boundary between the Stawell and Bendigo Zones, is a west-dipping listric reverse fault that intersects the Moyston Fault at a depth of about 22 km, forming a V-shaped geometry. Both the Stawell and Bendigo Zones can be divided broadly into a lower crustal region of interlayered and imbricated metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks and an upper crustal region of tightly folded metasedimentary rocks. The Stawell Zone was probably part of a Cambrian accretionary system along the eastern Gondwanaland margin, and mafic rocks may have been partly consumed by Cambrian subduction. Much of the Early Cambrian oceanic crust beneath the Bendigo Zone was not subducted, and is preserved as a crustal-scale imbricate thrust stack. The seismic data have shown that a thin-skinned structural model appears to be valid for much of the Melbourne Zone, whereas the Stawell and Bendigo Zones have a thick-skinned structural style. Internal faults in the Stawell and Bendigo Zones are mostly west-dipping listric faults, which extend from the surface to near the base of the crust. The Heathcote Fault Zone, the boundary between the Bendigo and Melbourne Zones, extends to at least 20 km, and possibly to the Moho. A striking feature in the seismic data is the markedly different seismic character of the mid to lower crust of the Melbourne Zone. The article presents a study on the alternative interpretation on high heat flow with natural convection of fluids in fragmented rock mass and high rates of erosion from the collected bathymetric image. It mentions that an elevated heat flow in oceanic crust of Cretaceous age was detected in the course of several Russian heat flow surveys. It notes that in high erosion rates, warm rock material at depth increases to nearer the sea floor, where it causes temporary elevated heat flow and cools.

We present a joint inversion of gravity and teleseismic data to enlighten the lithospheric structures of the Baikal–Mongolia region, an area characterized by high topographic contrasts, sporadic Cenozoic volcanism, extension and large transcurrent faulting in the vicinity of the Baikal Rift, Central Asia. The study uses a 1000 km long seismic transect that cross-cuts the main tectonic structures from north to south (namely, the Siberian platform, Tunka basin, Hangay Dome and Gobi-Altai belt). The Siberian platform depicts a high-velocity lithosphere down to about 150 km. We evidence strong velocity contrasts within the crust below the Hangay Dome and the Tunka depression, interpreted as a thickened crust. A low-velocity/density region is located at various depths below the Hangay Dome. Thanks to the dense spatial coverage of gravity data, we are able to define the 3-D geometry of this particular low-velocity/density anomaly. The Hangay Dome anomalous body extends from 60 to 225 km depth at his largest point and slightly thins to no more than 40 km at its easternmost end. A deep low-velocity zone (below 150 km) with only a weak negative density contrast is observed on the eastern part of the transect. We propose that the late Cenozoic uplift of the whole Mongolian Plateau and associated rifting, magmatism, high heat flow and lithospheric thinning are not externally driven by the India–Asia collision, but results from the interaction of two mantle plumes with the overlying lithosphere. Conversely, recent faulting may be the major expression of the India–Asia collision in this region, as well as N–S striking rift basins that connect and interact with major strike-slip faults, such as the Bolnai fault. The comparison between time residuals of this experiment and the Baikal Rift seismic data shows an undeniable disproportion for the Hangay anomaly. The Hangay time residuals are far more positive than through the Baikal, arguing for an asthenospheric signature that is not seen beneath the Baikal Rift. Furthermore, the southern edge of the thick Siberian cratonic lithosphere may favour the rise of a sublithospheric mantle flow at the contact with the Baikal–Mongolia lithosphere. Post-breakup vertical motions of passive margins are seen here as a result of the post-rift 2-D thermal evolution. A 2-D finite element numerical model is performed to evaluate both the vertical and horizontal conduction that drive the thermal evolution of continental passive margins, from breakup to post-breakup states. Initial temperature configurations corresponding to non-volcanic and volcanic margins are tested, and lead to different thermal evolution of the lithosphere. For both margins, a thermal thickening is observed in the stretched lithosphere, whereas the unstretched lithosphere undergoes first (0–80 Ma) a thermal thinning and secondly (after 80 Ma) a thermal thickening. In comparison with non-volcanic margins, volcanic margins show a slower thermal thickening and a greater thermal thinning in stretched and unstretched lithosphere, respectively. The variations with time of lithosphere thickness are then translated into isostatic vertical movements and reveal ‘seaward’ thermal induced subsidence and ‘landward’ thermal induced uplift. The estimated uplift reaches up to 250 m in volcanic margins and 120 m in non-volcanic margins. The modelled timing and amount of uplift in both margins are consistent with present-day topography of volcanic passive margins that stand two to three times higher than non-volcanic margins. Using these thermal models, we finally show that the 2-D strength of the margins drastically evolves with time from a seeward dominant strength (0–80 Ma) toward a landward dominant strength (time larger than 80 Ma). The subduction phase in the development of the Variscan Orogen in SW Europe was followed by an extended period of ‘intracontinental’ tectonics. The progressive temperature rise in the hinterland during plate convergence was accompanied by widespread partial melting in the lower crust and the nucleation of kilometric buckle folds and crustal-scale shear zones in the stronger upper crust. Thermal mechanical weakening in the core of the orogen was contemporaneous with shortening and thickening in the foreland fold-and-thrust belt. We evaluate lithospheric strength profiles in the hinterland and foreland based on the metamorphic and structural record for three tectonic stages. We find that lower crustal strength varied in space as well as in time during orogenesis. Strength contrasts between the foreland and the hot hinterland during convergence may have led to the additional indentation of the foreland into the hinterland of the Ibero-Armorican Arc. The Late Miocene tectonics of the Zagros folded belt (Fars province) has for long been related solely to folding of the cover controlled by a ductile décollement between basement and the sedimentary cover. However, geological constraints, topography analysis and seismotectonic studies reveal that basement thrusting may produce locally significant deformation in the cover. To determine how the deep-seated deformation in the basement may contribute to the overall topography we first examine the filtered large and short wavelengths of the topography. We find that the short-wavelength component of the topography (20–25 km), including the Zagros folds, is superimposed on the differential uplift at the regional scale. In other words, the regional base level of folded marker horizons remains parallel to the regional topography of interest. Modelling reveals that the salt-based wedge model, alone, is not able to reproduce the large-wavelength component of the topography of the Zagros Folded Belt. This reveals that when a thick (relatively to its overburden) layer of salt forms the basal décollement it is generally too weak and cannot support the growth of significant topography. We then test an alternative thick-skinned crustal wedge model involving the crust of the Arabian margin, which is decoupled above a viscous lower crust. This model satisfactorily reproduces the observed topography and is consistent with present-day basement thrusting, topography analyses and geological constraints. We conclude that basement-involved thickening and shortening is mechanically required to produce the shape of the Zagros Folded Belt since at least 10 Ma. Finally, the involvement of the basement provides mechanical and kinematic constraints that should be accounted for cross-sections balancing and further assessing the evolution of Zagros at crustal or lithospheric scales. Strain reversal of structural/stratigraphic profiles at different scales in the western Lachlan Orogen provides a perspective on original crustal thickness estimates, the former depositional basin width of the proto-western Lachlan Orogen, the original sedimentary-fan thickness, and the possible length extent of lower crust lost by subduction. Retrodeformation using strain-reversal techniques allows basin reconstruction giving an original width of the western Lachlan Orogen basin receptor of between 800 km (minimum) and &nvsim;1150 km (maximum), depending on the amount of stratal duplication allowed in the turbidites. Crude area balancing of the regional cross-section, adding in sectional volume lost by erosion and assuming strain compatibility between the upper and lower crust, suggests that the predeformation crustal thickness ranges between 15 km and &nvsim;21 km, with a lower crustal thickness (oceanic lithosphere) of &nvsim;9 km and a turbidite fan thickness of &nvsim;6 km (minimum) and &nvsim;12 km (maximum allowable), respectively. Disparity between the calculated fan thickness and that derived from measured stratigraphic sections adjusted for strain (&nvsim;6 km) indicates that some form of crustal stacking must be important in structural thickening of the turbidite crustal component. By varying shortening due to fault stacking, mass balance dictates the mismatch of the upper crustal (uc) and lower crustal (lc) retrodeformed lengths, and therefore provides an estimate of lower crustal loss by subduction. End members range from: (i) a 12 km-thick fan without fault duplication, a basin width of &nvsim;800 km where uc = lc giving no lower crustal loss by subduction; to (ii) a &nvsim;6 km fan, requiring duplication by faulting, a basin of &nvsim;1150 km where uc > lc, and &nvsim;360 km of lower crust length (&nvsim;30%) lost by subduction. Structural softening is a decrease in the amount of stress needed to deform the lithosphere at a particular rate because of its structural reorganization while all true rheological properties remain constant. Structural softening is fundamentally different than material softening, where the decrease in stress is generated by a change in rheological properties with progressive deformation, such as grain size reduction resulting from large shearing strain. We study structural softening generated by folding of the crust-mantle boundary, which is a structural instability that inevitably develops during compression of the mechanically layered lithosphere. For ductile rheologies, the stress decrease represents a decrease of the effective lithospheric viscosity, which is proportional to the ratio of stress to lithospheric shortening strain rate. We present analytical and numerical results quantifying the decrease in stress and effective viscosity that occur during shortening at a constant rate.
