Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to provide a consistent and systematic integration framework of sustainable development (SD) in a civil engineering (CE) curriculum, given the connection between the two. Curriculum integration is a challenging project and requires the development of certain protocols to ensure success. Design/methodology/approach: This paper thus proposes a framework for the systematic integration of SD through the lenses of life cycle approach and associated tools to attain effective curriculum integration. The proposed framework suggests the following five steps: mapping the curriculum, setting learning targets, developing an action plan for the assessed program, implementing the action plan and assessing the final performance. Findings: This framework was applied to the CE curriculum at Sherbrooke University. To assess its success, a student satisfaction survey was conducted, and teachers' feedback was obtained; the results showed 85 per cent positive responses. The authors show how this study allowed the CE curriculum to be properly updated and brought in line with today's engineering profession requirements with regard to SD. Originality/value: The integration focuses on the application of life cycle approaches and tools such as environmental life cycle assessment and life cycle costing on CE content. Additionally, the presented approach can be easily adapted to other engineering curriculums and, to a certain extent, to other non-engineering curriculums.

In this article, the author talks about America's xenophobia which goes back a long way past 1928 when it was alleged that Al Smith, the Democratic candidate and first Catholic to be nominated for the presidency, would build a tunnel from the Vatican to the White House so that the Pope could secretly run the country. The author also talks about interstate highways which were specifically created to aid evacuation in case of a Soviet attack. The interstate highway in the crosshairs of the xenophobes is I-69 or sometimes conflated with I-35. Anti-immigrant organisations see expansion of I-69 as a plot to create a NAFTA (North American Free Trade Association) superhighway stretching 1600 miles from Mexico to Canada; this would be the first step towards the creation of NAU, the North American Union, resulting in "the disintegration of these countries as sovereign nations." Although the interstate highway is considered as treason to some Americans, the author was astonished to find that to some Christians, it is deemed the road to salvation.

The article offers information on the editorial policy implemented by the "Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering." The journal, which is intended to reflect and stimulate the practice of civil engineering in Canada, is said to be recognized as the official technical journal of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and is published monthly by the National Research Council. It is not claimed to publish papers that are clearly in the domain of the "Canadian Geotechnical Journal" or the "Canadian Surveyor."

Extensive research has been conducted on reliability-based design (RBD) for the ultimate limit state (ULS). Several RBD codes have been developed and implemented around the world that calibrate the ULS design for a target ULS reliability index (βuls). However, the serviceability limit-state (SLS) design still is considered using conventional deterministic approaches with an unknown SLS reliability index (βsls). This paper presents a relationship between βsls and the βuls that is specified already in the RBD codes. This relationship is linear, and a key variable in it is the ratio (R) of the SLS capacity (Qsls) to the ULS capacity (Quls). Both closed-form approximations and Monte Carlo simulations are used to characterize R probabilistically. For illustration, the relationship then is used to estimate βsls for augered cast-in-place piles designed in accordance with the RBD methodologies in the National Building Code of Canada. The results are highly dependent on the statistics of the limiting tolerable foundation settlement (ylt). For larger ylt values, the calculated βsls>βuls, which means that ULS designs automatically satisfy SLS criteria. For smaller ylt values, SLS criteria begin to control the design. Due to the efficiency, sustainability, and advances in firefighting technologies, the allowable height for wood buildings was increased from 4 to 6 storeys in 2015 and will be further increased to 12 storeys in the 2020 edition of the National Building Code of Canada, as a result of the advent and application of mass timber products. To match the development in the industry and the increasing need in the market for highly skilled timber engineers, structural timber design curricula at the university level must evolve to train the next generation of practitioners. At most Canadian universities, structural timber design courses are mainly provided in civil engineering departments. In this study, 31 accredited civil engineering programs in Canada were reviewed for structural wood design content at undergraduate and graduate levels based on two surveys conducted in 2018 and 2020. In the 2018 survey, the percentage of structural timber design content was estimated and compared with other engineering materials (e.g., steel, concrete, and masonry), and a similar survey was repeated in 2020 to determine if any significant changes had occurred. In early 2021, two complementary questionnaires were sent to the instructors of timber-related courses across the country to collect quantitative information, including enrollment statistics, percentage dedicated to timber design in combined material courses, and potential topics deemed critical to support the design of modern timber structures. Based on the responses provided, and also on the availability of resources and the research ongoing, the content for five advanced-level courses is proposed to address the needs of the timber design community. The findings presented in this paper will assist the timber industry, government agencies, and educational institutions in effecting potential changes to university curricula to educate the next generation of timber design professionals who will possess the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the challenges in designing modern mass timber structures. The use of fiber-reinforced composite materials for the construction and rehabilitation of civil engineering structures is relatively new. Structural members are routinely joined by bolted connections. Bolted connections are relatively easy to assemble and maintain, and are capable of transferring the high loads that typically occur in civil engineering structures. Currently there is a serious lack of knowledge on the behavior and design of bolted connections for fiber-reinforced composites. In light of this, a comprehensive experimental and analytical investigation was conducted at the University of Manitoba to study the behavior of bolted connections in composite materials appropriate for civil engineering applications. A total of 102 single-bolt connections were tested up to failure. The various parameters investigated were the width of the structural member, the edge distance, the thickness, and the direction of the fibers with respect to the applied load. The experimental program also included comprehensive material testing to determine the various in-plane material properties. This paper discusses the experimental program, test results, and various modes of failure as affected by the foregoing parameters. ISIS is being financed primarily by the Canadian government.
