The 802.11ac is a significant landmark in wireless communications, as it pushes towards new rate limits by utilizing downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) beamforming to transmit data to various locations simultaneously. However, successful beamforming relies on intelligent user selection which requires, in turn, extensive overhead of channel calibration between the AP and each of the candidate users. The large overhead involved in the user selection procedure overwhelms the multiuser gain and hinders the utilization of multiuser MIMO. The phenomenon is even more acute when APs handle large groups of mobile users, which frequently associate and disconnect, making the process of acquiring channel state from all users and selecting the appropriate group even harder. Thus, the subtle relation between the achievable rate of a scheduling algorithm and the overhead it requires is significant for the 802.11ac performance analysis. In this paper, we provide a rigorous analysis of distributed algorithms that schedule a group of users for the downlink. In particular, we accommodate common scheduling methods for the 802.11ac protocol and analyze both their achievable rate and their calibration process overhead. This paper considers a method for improving physical layer security of wireless networks with full-duplex radio. In particular, fast algorithms are developed to compute power allocations in subcarriers, subject to power and rate constraints, to maximize the secrecy capacity of a three-node network consisting of a source, a full-duplex destination, and an eavesdropper. A residual level of radio self-interference channel is considered. The optimal power allocation at the destination is found to be significant especially when its power budget is high. Also studied in this paper are a network with multiple full-duplex destinations and another network with multiple sources. Using the algorithms developed in this paper, we are able to show that a multiuser strategy that optimizes the power distributions among the users (in terms of either the sources or the destinations) can yield a substantial gain of secrecy capacity over a single-user strategy. We consider the uplink transmission in multiuser wireless systems with multiple single-antenna transmitting users and a multiantenna receiver. We address two problems in this paper. The first problem is user admission, i.e., given a large number of users, how to admit the maximum number of users that can simultaneously satisfy quality of service (QoS) and power constraints. The second problem is how to distribute the data among the users when they are allowed to share data before transmission. The aim is to minimize the total data exchange cost. Such a problem is called user clustering. We formulate those problems into sparsity-maximization problems, which are NP-hard. Inspired by compressive sensing techniques, we propose a common framework to tackle those problems by first applying the \ell1 -norm relaxation and then solving them with convex optimization methods. Simulations show that the proposed algorithms achieve excellent performance. For user admission, the numbers of admitted users by the proposed algorithms are close to the optimum numbers of admitted users obtained by exhaustive search (ES) . For user clustering, the total data exchange cost is reduced by more than 10% after only a few iterations. One of the key challenges in wireless networking is allocating the available radio resources to maximize key service delivery parameters such as the aggregate throughput and the multimedia quality of experience (QoE). We propose a novel and effective scheduling policy that allocates resource blocks, such that interference power is shifted toward capacity-saturated users, while improving the throughput of unsaturated users. The highlight of this paper is that the proposed scheme can dramatically improve the performance of cells that have a high discrepancy in its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distribution, which is typical in urban areas. The results show that a free-lunch (FL) solution is possible, whereby for negligible performance degradation in the saturated users, a large improvement in the nonsaturated users can be obtained. However, on average, the number of FL user pairings is low. By relaxing the degradation constraints, the non-FL (NFL) solution can yield a greater multiuser throughput gain. Motivated by a surge in mobile multimedia traffic, we further demonstrate that the proposed scheduling may have a profound impact on both energy efficiency and QoE of multimedia service delivery. In this paper, we consider the classical problem of link scheduling in wireless networks under an accurate interference model, in which correct packet reception at a receiver node depends on the signa-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). While most previous work on wireless networks has addressed the scheduling problem using simplistic graph-based or distance-based interference models, a few recent papers have investigated scheduling with SINR-based interference models. However, these papers have either used approximations to the SINR model or have ignored important aspects of the problem. We study the problem of wireless link scheduling under the exact SINR model and present the first known true approximation algorithms for transmission scheduling under the exact model. We also introduce an algorithm with a proven approximation bound with respect to the length of the optimal schedule under primary interference. As an aside, our study identifies a class of “difficult to schedule” links, which hinder the derivation of tighter approximation bounds. Furthermore, we characterize conditions under which scheduling under SINR-based interference is within a constant factor from optimal under primary interference, which implies that secondary interference only degrades performance by a constant factor in these situations. We present in this paper a novel proactive interference avoidance scheme for mobile-to-mobile (M2M) communication as an underlay in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) downlink networks. The proposed scheme introduces an intelligent user-selective resource allocation algorithm that aims to proactively avoid interference between M2M pairs and LTE regular users while achieving a satisfactory link budget for both M2M and LTE regular links. The proposed resource allocation algorithm is based on a novel low-complexity interference estimation approach that requires only channel quality indicator (CQI) information (CSI). Since the CQI reporting mechanism has been already implemented in current LTE systems, the proposed algorithm is indeed practical and standard compatible, compared with the existing works that require perfect knowledge of the channel state information (CSI). In this research, achievable data throughput with LTE-compliant adaptive modulation and coding has been adopted as the optimization measurement, rather than the information-theoretic capacity. Therefore, the performance of the proposed scheme is practically realizable in LTE communication systems. Since the performance of the proposed scheme highly relies on the accuracy of CQI feedback, we also carry out performance analysis to evaluate the impact of CQI estimation error and delay. The simulation results show that the total achievable data throughput for LTE networks is dramatically enhanced by M2M communication with this proposed interference avoidance resource allocation scheme. In heterogeneous networks (HetNets), the load between macrocell base stations (MBSs) and small-cell base stations (SBSs) is imbalanced due to their different transmission powers and locations. This load imbalance significantly impacts system performance and affects the experience of mobile users (MUs) with different priorities. In this paper, we aim to distributively optimize the user association in HetNets with various user priorities to solve the load balancing problem. Since the user association is a binary matching problem, which is NP-hard, we propose a distributed belief propagation (BP) algorithm to approach the optimal solution. We first develop a factor graph model, using the network topology, to represent this user association problem. With this factor graph, we propose a novel distributed BP algorithm by adopting the proportional fairness as the objective. Next, we theoretically prove the existence of the fixed point in our BP algorithm. To be more practical, we develop an approximation method to significantly reduce the computational and communication complexity of the BP algorithm. Furthermore, we analyze some properties of the factor graph relevant to the performance of the BP algorithm using the stochastic geometry. Simulation results show that 1) the proposed BP algorithm well approaches the optimal system performance and achieves a much better performance compared with other association schemes and that 2) the analytical results on the average degree distribution and sparsity of the factor graph match with those obtained from the Monte Carlo simulations. In an interference limited network, joint power and admission control (JPAC) aims at supporting a maximum number of links at their specified signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) targets while using minimum total transmission power. Various convex approximation deflation approaches have been developed for the JPAC problem. In this paper, we propose an effective polynomial time non-convex approximation deflation approach for solving the problem. The approach is based on the non-convex \ell q~(0< q< 1) approximation of an equivalent sparse \ell 0 reformulation of the JPAC problem. We show that, for any instance of the JPAC problem, there exists a \bar q\in (0,1) such that it can be exactly solved by solving its \ell q approximation problem with any q\in (0, \bar q]. We also show that finding the global solution of the \ell q approximation problem is NP-hard. Then, we propose a potential reduction interior-point algorithm, which can return an \epsilon -KKT solution of the NP-hard \ell q approximation problem in polynomial time. The returned solution can be used to check the simultaneous supportability of all links in the network and to guide an iterative link removal procedure, resulting in the polynomial time non-convex approximation deflation approach for the JPAC problem. Numerical simulations show that the proposed approach outperforms the existing convex approximation approaches in terms of the number of supported links and the total transmission power, particularly exhibiting a quite good performance in selecting which subset of links to support. Ultradense heterogeneous networks (HetNets) are emerging as an inevitable approach to tackle the capacity crunch in cellular networks. However, imbalanced load among small and macrocells and poor resource utilization as a consequence in HetNets remains a long-standing problem. This paper addresses this problem by presenting a solution for maximization of coverage and capacity while minimizing load imbalance among macro and small cells. Most recent studies on the topic focus on either optimization of coverage, capacity or load, or a combination of two of these three intertwined objectives. We formulate the optimization problem as a function of two hard parameters namely antenna tilt and transmit power, and a soft parameter, cell individual offset, that affect the coverage, capacity, and load directly. The resulting solution is a combination of the otherwise conflicting coverage and capacity optimization (CCO) and load balancing (LB) self-organizing network (SON) functions. In the presented joint CCO-LB solution, a conflict free operation of CCO and LB is ensured by designing a novel load aware user association methodology and resolving the effects of shadowing on coverage probability using stochastic approximation. The problem is proven to be nonconvex and is solved using genetic algorithm, sequential quadratic programming, and pattern search algorithms. The proposed CCO-LB solution is compared against two recently proposed CCO and CCO-LB solutions in the literature. The cross-layer utility maximization problem, which is subject to stability constraints for a multicommodity wireless network where all links share the same number of orthogonal channels, is considered in this paper. We assume a time-slotted network, where the channel gains randomly change from one slot to another. The optimal cross-layer network control policy can be decomposed into the folloing three subproblems: 1) flow control; 2) next-hop routing and in -node scheduling; and 3) power and rate control, which is also known as resource allocation (RA). These subproblems span the layers from the physical layer to the transport layer. In every time slot, a network controller decides the amount of each commodity data admitted to the network layer, schedules different commodities over the network's links, and controls the power and rate allocated to every link in every channel. To fully exploit the available multichannel diversity, we consider the general case, where multiple links can be activated in the same channel during the same time slot, and the interference is controlled solely through power and rate control. Unfortunately, the RA subproblem is not yet amendable to a convex formulation, and in fact, it is NP-hard. The main contribution of this paper is to develop efficient RA algorithms for multicommodity multichannel wireless networks by applying complementary geometric programming and homotopy methods to analyze the quantitative impact of gains that can be achieved at the network layer in terms of end-to-end rates and network congestion by incorporating different RA algorithms. Although the global optimality of the solution cannot be guaranteed, the numerical results show that the proposed algorithms perform close to the (exponentially complex) optimal solution methods. Moreover, they efficiently exploit the available multichannel diversity, which provides significant gains at the network layer in terms of end-to-end rates and network congestion. In this paper, we consider a wireless amplify-and-forward relay network with one relay node and multiple source-destination pairs/users and propose a pricing framework that enables the relay to set prices to maximize either its revenue or any desirable system utility. Specifically, depending on the quality of the received signals, the relay sets prices and correspondingly charges the users utilizing its resources for their transmissions. The price is determined in such a way that the relay's revenue or system utility is maximized. Given the specified price, the users competitively employ the relay node to forward their signals. We model each user as a rational player, which aims at maximizing its own net utility through power allocation, and analyze the competition among the users within the framework of noncooperative game theory. It is shown that, in the game played by the users, there always exists a unique pure Nash equilibrium point that can be achieved through distributed iterations. Next, subject to the availability of complete information about the users at the relay, we propose a low-complexity uniform pricing algorithm and an optimal differentiated pricing algorithm, in which the relay either charges the users at a suboptimal uniform price or charges different users at different prices. We also show that, by applying the differentiated pricing algorithm that enforces the users to transmit at certain power levels, any system utility can be maximized. Spanner construction is one of the most important techniques for topology control in wireless networks. A spanner can help not only to decrease the number of links and to maintain connectivity but also to ensure that the distance between any pair of communication nodes is within some constant factor from the shortest possible distance. Due to the non-locality, constructing a spanner is especially challenging under the physical interference model signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR). In this paper, we develop two localized randomized algorithms SINR-directed-YG and SINR-undirected-YG to construct a directed Yao graph (YG) and an undirected YG in O(\log n) ( n is the number of wireless nodes) time slots with a high probability, in which each node is capable of performing successful local broadcasts to gather neighborhood information within a certain region and the SINR constraint is satisfied at all the steps of the algorithms. The resultant graph of SINR-undirected-YG, which is based on SINR-directed-YG, possesses a constant stretch factor \frac 11-2\sin (\pi/c) , where c>6 is a constant. To the best of our knowledge, SINR-undirected-YG is the first spanner construction algorithm under SINR. We also obtain Yao-Yao graph under SINR. A number of inherently unipolar orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation schemes have been introduced recently in an attempt to improve the energy efficiency of OFDM-based intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) systems. All such algorithms, including asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM), pulse-amplitude-modulated discrete multitone modulation (PAM-DMT) and unipolar orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (U-OFDM), experience an inherent loss in spectral efficiency caused by the restrictions imposed on the OFDM frame structure required for the generation of a unipolar signal. The current paper presents a modified modulation approach, termed enhanced U-OFDM (eU-OFDM), which compensates the spectral efficiency loss in U-OFDM. At the same time, it still allows for the generation of an inherently unipolar modulation signal that achieves better performance in terms of both electrical power and optical power dissipation compared to the conventional state-of-the-art technique direct current (DC)-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM). To the best of the authors' knowledge, the current work also presents the first experimental proof-of-concept demonstration of both U-OFDM and eU-OFDM, and clearly demonstrates the significant energy advantages that these two schemes can introduce in an optical wireless communications (OWC) system. Radar signal design in a spectrally crowded environment is currently a challenge due to the increasing requests for spectrum from both military sensing applications and civilian wireless services. The goal of this paper is to improve a previously devised algorithm for the synthesis of optimized radar waveforms fulfilling spectral compatibility with overlaid licensed radiators. The new technique achieves an enhanced spectral coexistence with the surrounding electromagnetic environment through a suitable modulation of the transmitted waveform energy, which was kept fixed at the maximum level in the previously devised algorithm. At the analysis stage, the waveform performance is studied in terms of trade-off among the achievable Signal to Interference Plus Noise Ratio (SINR), spectral shape, and the resulting Autocorrelation Function (ACF), also in situations where the previous technique cannot be applied. Cognitive radio (CR) is currently one of the most promising solutions for designing spectrum-efficient wireless communication systems. In this paper, we present a greedy cognitive access policy that handles spectrum sensing with the tools of image processing. By means of the Wigner–Ville transform (WVT), we are able to analyze the time and frequency features of the received interference, and represent them on a time–frequency grid as an image in which brightness reveals the spectrum occupancy. According to sensed interference, each secondary user autonomously tries to access the grid following a multiple-division principle, i.e., by properly shaping the signal in the code, time, and frequency domains. In detail, this is realized by processing the WVT to derive the shaping mask (and the matching algorithm) that allows the filling up of the “time spectrum holes.” Numerical simulations and a test-bed implementation show how the proposed scheme outperforms selected state-of-the-art approaches while still presenting an affordable computational cost. We propose a marginal-power-efficiency-based adaptation (MPEA) scheme for distributed power control in wireless communication systems. Nodes autonomously adapt their transmit power by keeping a differential measure of power efficiency, which is defined as the additional capacity obtained per unit of transmit power, at a desirable threshold. We combine the MPEA with the Foschini–Miljanic (FM) algorithm into a power control algorithm for a multihop cellular network where nodes can dynamically adapt to both local and global conditions. A multiple-relay assisted cooperative automatic-repeat-request (CARQ) system is proposed in interference-limited scenario, where multiple-user detection (MUD) receivers using successive interference cancellation (SIC) are employed at the relay nodes (RNs) and the destination node (DN) to combat cochannel interference (CCI). We analyze the outage performance and propose a novel best effort-detection-based opportunistic relay selection (BED-ORS) scheme, which achieves significantly better outage performance than the traditional highest SNR-based ORS scheme offered in the literature. Dynamic variations in channel behavior is considered in transmission power control design for cellular radio systems. It is well known that power control increases system capacity, improves Quality of Service (QoS), and reduces multiuser interference. In this paper, an adaptive power control design based on the identification of the underlying pathloss dynamics of the fading channel is presented. Formulating power control decisions based on the measured received power levels allows modeling the fading channel pathloss dynamics in terms of a Hidden Markov Model (HMM). This paper proposes an automatic control framework to address the problem of distributed and opportunistic transmission power control in wireless communication networks. The proposed framework allows high flexibility on the quality of service (QoS) provision by exploiting the link quality variation. It associates a standard target tracking algorithm with a dynamic target QoS determined by a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller that induces an opportunistic behavior. Strict QoS requirements can also be fulfilled by choosing appropriately the weighting parameters of the LQR synthesis. To prevent performance degradation due to measurement uncertainties, robust solutions are developed. The proposed mixed \cal H2/\cal H\infty distributed power control combines the optimal \cal H2 control and the robust \cal H\infty control to obtain trade-off solutions. All developed algorithms present low computational complexity, and the mixed \cal H2/\cal H\infty distributed power control can operate as the pure \cal H2 control if the robust constraint is relaxed according to the choice of a single parameter. This paper investigates transmit antenna selection for linearly precoded multiuser multiple-input–multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. First, in some precoded single-user MIMO systems, using all transmit antennas does not always lead to the best performance due to ill-conditioned channel matrices. This condition motivates us to investigate whether a similar result can be obtained in MU-MIMO systems. Based on the derived analytical results, we found that, for a given number of transmit antennas, decreasing the number of active transmit antennas [number of radio frequency (RF) units] always degrades system performance in the linearly precoded MU-MIMO systems. However, in practical systems, RF units are expensive. To reduce the hardware cost, antenna selection is usually used to reduce the number of RF units. Thus, we further analyze the performance loss due to transmit antenna selection (TAS). These analytical results provide good design references for using TAS in practical systems. Moreover, based on the analytical results, we proposed several simple TAS algorithms for linearly precoded MU-MIMO systems. Complexity analysis and simulation results show that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithms can significantly be reduced, whereas the performance is still comparable with the optimal selection scheme. As a result, the analyzed results enable us to better understand how TAS affects the MU-MIMO systems. In addition, the proposed algorithms make TAS more feasible to be used in practical systems. In wireless communication systems with multiple users, the near–far effect and the cochannel interferences decrease the spectral efficiency and system performance. An efficient known method to combat these destructive effects is to properly adjust the transmit powers. A practical and efficient way for power control (PC) in cellular communication systems is the autonomous distributed PC (DPC). In this method, the transmit power of each link is independently modified based on the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) reported from the other side of that link. It is known that in a perfect scenario where the reported SINRs are exact, this algorithm converges to the optimum transmit powers. However, in the case of erroneous SINR reports, the transmit powers deviate from their optimum values. This paper addresses the destructive effect of inaccurate SINR reports on the performance of a DPC algorithm. Then, independent variable step-sizes that update the transmit powers are proposed, and convergence of the proposed DPC algorithm to the optimum solution of the original problem is analytically shown. Additionally, a protocol to adaptively tune the step-sizes in our algorithm, which improves the performance of PC in the presence of inaccurate SINR reports, is proposed. We consider a heterogeneous cellular network with densely underlaid small cell access points (SAPs). Wireless backhaul provides the data connection from the core network to SAPs. To serve as many SAPs and their corresponding users as possible with guaranteed data rates, admission control of SAPs needs to be performed in wireless backhaul. Such a problem involves joint design of transmit beamformers, power control, and selection of SAPs. In order to tackle such a difficult problem, we apply $\ell_1$-relaxation and propose an iterative algorithm for the $\ell_1$-relaxed problem. The selection of SAPs is made based on the outputs of the iterative algorithm, and we prove such an algorithm converges locally. Furthermore, this algorithm is fast and enjoys low complexity for small-to-medium sized systems. However, its solution depends on the actual channel state information, and resuming the algorithm for each new channel realization may be unrealistic for large systems. Therefore, we make use of the random matrix theory and also propose an iterative algorithm for large systems. Such a large-system iterative algorithm can produce the asymptotically optimum solution for the $\ell_1$-relaxed problem, which only requires large-scale channel coefficients irrespective of the actual channel realization. We study the coordinated transmission problem in cooperative cellular networks where a cluster of base stations forms a virtual cell to serve a mobile station (MS). The performance of such an MS-centric virtual cell network is dictated by the beamformer that enables to suppress interference; however, designing a beamformer is highly challenging due to the coupled nature of interference and desired signals under arbitrarily formed virtual cells. We develop a new formulation of the beamforming problem for sum-rate maximization in virtual cell networks and analyze the structure of its optimal solutions. Based on this analysis, we develop a beamforming algorithm that can balance between desired signal maximization and interference minimization, so as to maximize the sum-rate. We show through extensive simulations that our balanced beamforming algorithm mitigates edge user effect and outperforms existing algorithms in various scenarios where virtual cells are allowed to overlap. Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) have the potential to utilize spectrum efficiently and are positioned to be the core technology for the next-generation multihop wireless networks. An important problem for such networks is its capacity. We study this problem for CRNs in the SINR (signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio) model, which is considered to be a better characterization of interference (but also more difficult to analyze) than disk graph model. The main difficulties of this problem are two-fold. First, SINR is a nonconvex function of transmission powers; an optimization problem in the SINR model is usually a nonconvex program and NP-hard in general. Second, in the SINR model, scheduling feasibility and the maximum allowed flow rate on each link are determined by SINR at the physical layer. To maximize capacity, it is essential to follow a cross-layer approach, but joint optimization at physical (power control), link (scheduling), and network (flow routing) layers with the SINR function is inherently difficult. In this paper, we give a mathematical characterization of the joint relationship among these layers. We devise a solution procedure that provides a (1- \varepsilon ) optimal solution to this complex problem, where \varepsilon is the required accuracy. Our theoretical result offers a performance benchmark for any other algorithms developed for practical implementation. Using numerical results, we demonstrate the efficacy of the solution procedure and offer quantitative understanding on the interaction of power control, scheduling, and flow routing in a CRN. The challenge of the fifth generation of wireless systems is to overcome fundamental limits of existing cellular networks by means of advanced technologies such as network densification. Nevertheless, dense and random deployment of the network infrastructure poses new challenges in the network management. In particular, rethinking cell association policies and introducing new specific load balancing strategies will be mandatory to shift traffic from heavy-loaded cells to light-loaded neighbors. Toward this goal, cell biasing is considered one of the most effective way. This letter proposes a low-complexity distributed cell-specific bias algorithm suitable for an actual implementation on highly dense scenarios. This solution takes into account the users’ data rate requests and aims at minimizing the outage rate defined as the amount of unsatisfied data rate requests. Coordinated precoding based on interference alignment is a promising technique for improving the throughputs in future wireless multicell networks. In small networks, all base stations can typically jointly coordinate their precoding. In large networks, however, base station clustering is necessary due to the otherwise overwhelmingly high channel state information (CSI) acquisition overhead. In this work, we provide a branch and bound algorithm for finding the globally optimal base station clustering. The algorithm is mainly intended for benchmarking existing suboptimal clustering schemes. We propose a general model for the user throughputs, which only depends on the long-term CSI statistics. The model assumes intracluster interference alignment and is able to account for the CSI acquisition overhead. By enumerating a search tree using a best-first search and pruning sub-trees in which the optimal solution provably cannot be, the proposed method converges to the optimal solution. The pruning is done using specifically derived bounds, which exploit some assumed structure in the throughput model. Due to the ever increasing data traffic demands, which are directly connected to increased energy consumption, it becomes challenging for operators to achieve capacity enhancement while limiting their electric bill. To that end, exploiting the context awareness of future cognitive networks is expected to play a key role. Next generation cellular networks are about to include a plethora of small cells, with users being able to communicate via multiple bands. Given that small cells are expected to be eventually as close as 50 m apart, not all of them will have a direct connection to the core network; thus, multihop communication through neighboring small cells may be required. In such architectures, the user association problem becomes challenging, with backhaul energy consumption being a definitive parameter. Thus, in this article, we study the user association problem in cognitive heterogeneous networks. We evaluate the existing approaches in terms of energy efficiency and show the potential of exploiting the available context-aware information (i.e., users? measurements and requirements, knowledge of the network architecture, and the available spectrum resources of each base station) to associate the users in an energyefficient way, while maintaining high spectrum efficiency. Efficient optimization techniques are important to manage interference in emerging dense wireless networks. Here, we address interference management through power control as a general utility maximization problem. For the class of utility functions that are concave in the logarithm of the optimization variables, we propose a power control algorithm based on fixed-point iterations. The iterations converge to the globally optimal power vector. One key benefit is that, for a network with N transmitters and a centralized implementation of the power control algorithm, the computational complexity per iteration of the algorithm is \cal O(N^2). When implemented in a distributed fashion and allowing for a signaling complexity of N messages per iteration, the computation complexity is reduced to \cal O(N). We show that the proposed centralized and distributed versions of the algorithm converge to the optimal power vector at a linear rate. Our numerical results suggest that in most instances, the algorithm takes fewer than ten iterations to converge, even fewer if the initialization is close to the optimal power vector. The proposed algorithm is, therefore, very efficient for power control in slowly fading channels. Furthermore, unlike previous works in the literature, the proposed algorithm does not require the objective function to be separable into a sum of individual utilities. As an example, we present results for power control in a two-hop decode-and-forward cooperative relay network and illustrate the performance gains due to interference management. Recently, a cooperative cognitive radio network (CCRN) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio (CR) network have been proposed and investigated individually as promising paradigms for CR networks. Herein, we consider applying the MIMO techniques to a CCRN in order to achieve increased spectral efficiency. Assuming that the system comprises a single-input single-output (SISO) primary user (PU) pair and a multi-input single-output (MISO) secondary user (SU) pair, we propose jointly optimizing the beamforming vector and power allocation for the SU transmitter in order to maximize the rate for the SU while meeting the rate requirement for the PU. As the problem is nontrivial, we circumvent it using the uplink and downlink duality and equality of the left and right eigenvalues. Further, we introduce an iterative algorithm with a proof of convergence. From the numerical results, the proposed algorithm converges in a small number of iterations and outperforms the zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming algorithm while providing an upper bound for the CCRN-MIMO performance. Furthermore, the application of the proposed algorithm is not limited to CCRN-MIMO; it can also be extended to the conventional relay MIMO and/or MU-MIMO with a quality-of-service (QoS) requirement. We develop a distributed throughput-optimal power allocation algorithm in wireless networks. The study of this problem has been limited due to the nonconvexity of the underlying optimization problems that prohibits an efficient solution even in a centralized setting. By generalizing the randomization framework originally proposed for input queued switches to SINR rate-based interference model, we characterize the throughput-optimality conditions that enable efficient and distributed implementation. Using gossiping algorithm, we develop a distributed power allocation algorithm that satisfies the optimality conditions, thereby achieving (nearly) 100 percent throughput. Multiuser diversity techniques are used in multicarrier data systems to enhance downlink cell throughput. This requires downlink channel information from the users that is opportunistically used by a base station to send data to the users with good channel condition. Channel feedback from the user to the base station incurs high overhead especially when many users are in the cell and each user needs to report channel information over multiple channels, as in OFDMA systems. To reduce the quantity of feedback information without significant throughput degradation, a practical strategy is to deliver feedback on a partial set of channels with the best channel quality. We call it best feedback, and this reporting scheme carried out for best four or five among 24 channels has been already adopted in the IEEE 802.16e standard. Considering real feedback conditions, we investigate the performance of a best feedback scheme and derive the optimal number of channels for which information needs to be fed back to keep the throughput gap (compared to a full feedback scheme) within a target margin. From the optimal condition, we propose an adaptive best feedback algorithm, where the number of reported channels is adjusted to adapt to the number of users in the cell. We also propose an adjusted periodic feedback algorithm, where users are divided into groups and scheduling is carried out group by group, so a user can report feedback information when his group is scheduled, thereby reducing the frequency of feedback transmission. To support differentiated performance, we further propose heterogeneous feedback algorithms where users are divided into heterogeneous groups, each with a different group size or a different feedback period.
