Abstract The intensity of use of a location is one of the most studied properties of animal movement, yet movement analyses generally focus on the overall use of a location without much consideration of how patterns in intensity of use emerge. Extracting properties related to intensity of use, such as the number of visits, the average and variation in time spent and the average and variation in time between visits, could help provide a more mechanistic understanding of how animals use landscape. Combining and synthesizing these properties into a single spatial representation could inform the role that a location plays for an animal. We developed an R package named ‘UseScape’ that allows the extraction of these metrics and then clustered them using mixture modelling to create a spatial representation of the type of use an animal makes of the landscape. We illustrate applications of the approach using datasets of animal movement from four taxa and highlight species‐specific and cross‐species insights. Our framework highlights properties that functionally differ in how animals use them, contrasting, for example, heavily used locations that emerge because they are frequented for long durations, locations that are repeatedly and regularly visited for shorter durations of time or locations visited irregularly. We found that species generally had similar types of use, such as typical low, mid and high use, but there were also species‐specific clusters that would have been ignored when only focusing on the overall intensity of use. Our multi‐system comparison highlighted how the framework provided novel insights that would not have been directly obtainable by currently available approaches. By making the framework available as an R package, these analyses can be easily applicable to a myriad of systems where relocation data are available. Movement ecology as a field can strongly benefit from approaches that not just describe patterns in space use, but also highlight the behavioural mechanisms leading to these emerging patterns.

The discovery of chirped pulse amplification has led to great improvements in laser technology, enabling energetic laser beams to be compressed to pulse durations of tens of femtoseconds and focused to a few micrometers. Protons with energies of tens of MeV can be accelerated using, for instance, target normal sheath acceleration and focused on secondary targets. Under such conditions, nuclear reactions can occur, with the production of radioisotopes suitable for medical application. The use of high-repetition lasers to produce such isotopes is competitive with conventional methods mostly based on accelerators. In this paper, we study the production of 67Cu, 63Zn, 18F, and 11C, which are currently used in positron emission tomography and other applications. At the same time, we study the reactions 10B(p,α)7Be and 70Zn(p,4n)67Ga to put further constraints on the proton distributions at different angles, as well as the reaction 11B(p,α)8Be relevant for energy production. The experiment was performed at the 1 PW laser facility at Vega III in Salamanca, Spain. Angular distributions of radioisotopes in the forward (with respect to the laser direction) and backward directions were measured using a high purity germanium detector. Our results are in reasonable agreement with numerical estimates obtained following the approach of Kimura and Bonasera [Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res., Sect. A 637, 164–170 (2011)].

ABSTRACT An invasive hybrid cattail species, Typha × glauca (T. × glauca), is rapidly expanding across the United States and Canada. Dense clonal stands of T. × glauca outcompete native wetland plants, reduce open‐water habitats, and negatively affect native wetland plant diversity; however, effects of hybrid cattail expansions on native wildlife are still unclear. We used multiple surveys and single‐season occupancy models to examine how the relative coverage of T. × glauca affected habitat use by common loons (Gavia immer) at 71 wetland sites in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota, USA, during summer 2016. Delineated wetland sites (2 ha) were considered potential resource patches for common loons and positioned along a gradient of relative T. × glauca coverage. Detection of common loons was influenced negatively by the time of day surveys were conducted. Occupancy probabilities were greater at sites with deeper water levels, possibly indicating selection for areas with adequate water depths for pursuit‐based foraging for fish. Contrary to our hypothesis, common loons appeared insensitive to the relative coverage of T. × glauca at wetland sites. Future research should focus on elucidating potential threshold‐effects of T. × glauca expansions on additional loon demographic rates. © 2018 The Wildlife Society.

Although most emergent wetlands across central North America have been destroyed or degraded, wetland restoration in recent decades has provided new habitat resources for wetland birds in agriculturally dominated landscapes. The goals of wetland restorations often include providing habitat for migratory and breeding waterfowl and other wetland birds. One such restored wetland complex in the Illinois River Valley, the Emiquon Preserve, is isolated from most flooding events of the Illinois River allowing the growth of persistent emergent vegetation that was quickly colonized by breeding wetland birds. We examined nest occurrence and variables influencing site selection, nest success, and changes in nest density across stages of the wetland succession cycle. We located 327 nests from nine species of wetland birds (American Bittern, Botaurus lentiginosus; American Coot, Fulica americana; Black-crowned Night-Heron, Nycticorax nycticorax; Black-necked Stilt, Himantopus mexicanus; Common Gallinule, Gallinula galeata; Green Heron, Butorides virescens; Least Bittern, Ixobrychus exilis; Pied-billed Grebe, Podilymbus podiceps; Sora, Porzana carolina) during 2013-2019. Common Gallinules were more likely to nest in persistent emergent vegetation than other cover types. American Coots and Least Bitterns selected nest sites based on water depth. Black-necked Stilt and Black-crowned Night-Heron nests were less successful in deeper water. Black-necked Stilt, Black-crowned Night-Heron, and Common Gallinule nests were less successful with later initiation dates. Nest density did not vary between persistent emergent and hemi-marsh cover types. Across 2013-2019 we estimated an average of 372 nests/year for six marsh-nesting bird species at Emiquon, including two state-endangered (Common Gallinule and Black-crowned Night-Heron) and one state-threatened (Least Bittern). Wetlands restored from agricultural fields can quickly provide critical breeding habitat for marsh-nesting birds of conservation concern, although continued management is needed to provide resources to maintain persistent emergent vegetation communities as individual marshes transition through the marsh cycle.

In this work, we present experimental results on the behavior of liquid water at megabar pressure. The experiment was performed using the HIPER (High-Intensity Plasma Experimental Research) laser facility, a uniaxial irradiation chamber of GEKKO XII (GXII) at the Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE), and the PHELIX at GSI (GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research), a single-beam high-power laser facility, to launch a planar shock into solid multilayered water samples. Equation-of-state data of water H 2 O are obtained in the pressure range 0.50–4.6 Mbar by tuning the laser-drive parameters. The Hugoniot parameters (pressure, density, etc.) and the shock temperature were simultaneously determined by using VISAR and SOP as diagnostic tools and quartz as the standard material for impedance mismatch experiments. Finally, our experimental results are compared with hydrodynamic simulations tested with different equations of state, showing good compatibility with tabulated SESAME tables for water. Resource distribution, habitat structure, and predators greatly influence spatial and temporal landscape use by prey species. The "risky places" hypothesis establishes prey will proactively respond to predators' presence based on habitat cues, whereas the "risky times" hypothesis predicts prey will reactively respond by increasing vigilance in the presence of predators regardless of habitat cues. We fit a multiscale, Bayesian species interaction occupancy model with detection/non‐detection data to evaluate black‐tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) and eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus) habitat use in the presence and absence of coyotes (Canis latrans), American badgers (Taxidea taxus), and swift foxes (Vulpes velox). We also evaluated how species‐specific predator presence modified temporal activity patterns of prey. Jackrabbits decreased habitat use in areas with greater forage and opted to use areas with greater visibility when coyotes or swift foxes were present. However, cottontails used habitat in open areas with greater visibility when American badgers were present and all other predators absent, suggesting dissimilar habitat‐use patterns dictated by predator‐specific risks. Both lagomorph species are nocturnal with segregated peaks of activity compared with predators, suggesting fine‐scale temporal use partitioning. The high-belite calcium sulfoaluminate cement (HB-CSA) has displayed outstanding acid resistance. However, further research is needed to understand the mechanism behind its acid resistance fully. This study investigates the resistance of a new type of HB-CSA to hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. Additionally, the impact of the ye'elimite (C4A3S)-to-gypsum (CS) ratio on the acid resistance of HB-CSA is discussed. The resistance performance is investigated by flexural strength and resistance index analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), electronic computed tomography (CT) scans, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the HBCSA exhibits superior resistance to sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid compared to Portland cement. The absence of portlandite contributes to the enhanced performance of HB-CSA. In addition, as the C4A3S-to-CS ratio decreases, the content of Aft in HB-CSA increases, leading to an increase in the acid resistance of HB-CSA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Translocation is a management tool used to restore or augment wildlife populations, but outcomes of translocations are often poorly documented and can have varying levels of success for improving wildlife population declines. The lesser prairie‐chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) is a prairie grouse endemic to the southern Great Plains. In response to declining abundance and distribution, in 2023 lesser prairie‐chickens were listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act in different states. Translocation is a potential management response to population declines when there is an availability of unoccupied habitats, but translocation efficacy has not been evaluated for lesser prairie‐chickens. We translocated 411 lesser prairie‐chickens seasonally from 2016‐2019 and monitored the translocated lesser prairie‐chicken population from 2017–2022. To assess translocation as a management tool for lesser prairie‐chickens, we estimated survival for 2017–2020 and conducted lek surveys during 2017–2022. Over a fifth (22.8%, n = 94) of translocated birds either died or went missing within the first 2 weeks following release. Survival rates of translocated birds during the breeding (0.44 ± 0.02 [SE]) and nonbreeding (0.55 ± 0.03 [SE]) seasons were relatively low compared to nontranslocated lesser prairie‐chickens in other studies (0.63–0.93 for breeding season; 0.43–0.87 for non‐breeding season). Twenty‐seven percent of translocated birds survived to the breeding season after release (i.e., >1 year). Translocated lesser prairie‐chickens initiated 28 lekking sites over the study period. We estimated 77% of males available >2 weeks post release participated in lekking activity. The number of leks and male high counts on leks in the study area increased after translocation, peaking one year post‐translocation (an overall increase of 250% and 340%, respectively). However, both the number of leks and male high counts decreased (48% and 39%, respectively) within 3 years after translocation cessation. Establishment of leks and increasing lek attendance directly following translocation initially suggested that translocation could be a viable management tool. However, survival rates after translocation and declining lek counts following translocation indicates that the increased population abundance and occupied range from this translocation effort may be unsustainable. Our results highlight the necessity of monitoring to determine outcomes of a large lesser prairie‐chicken translocation. Other management strategies, such as targeted grassland restoration and management in areas of greatest lesser prairie‐chicken density, could be more beneficial for conservation of lesser prairie‐chicken populations. Wetlands have become increasingly rare in the United States, negatively influencing wetland‐dependent birds, and many remaining wetlands are intensively managed through seasonal dewatering mimicking historic flood pulses during spring and summer. However, water around nests may provide protection from terrestrial predators, and lowering water levels during the breeding season of wetland birds may increase predation risk and exacerbate marsh bird population declines. Understanding interactions between water depth, nesting marsh birds, and nest predators is critical to aid managers in developing a multi‐species management approach in emergent wetlands. During the 2020 and 2021 breeding seasons, we examined nest survival of 148 marsh bird nests (American Coot, Fulica americana, n = 1; Common Gallinule, Gallinula galeata, n = 64; and Least Bittern; Ixobrychus exilis, n = 83) and installed cameras at 78 nests to identify predators at a large, restored floodplain wetland in Illinois where the primary management technique is seasonal water removal to stimulate germination of moist soil plants. We found nest predation of, and abandonment by, Least Bittern and Common Gallinule were related to shallower water, and early season, high volume dewatering. Least Bitterns nested more commonly along wetland edges and nests farther from the shore were more likely to survive. Similarly, we found mammalian depredation of nests and nest abandonment decreased when deeper water was present around nests. Alternatively, snake predation was observed earlier in the year prior to water removal from inundated emergent vegetation. Our results demonstrate water depth may be an important deterrent of nest predators, especially mammals, during the breeding season. Offshore wind farms are one of the most important pillars of the successful implementation of the envisaged energy turnaround. However, so far, the States are all far from reaching their targets. Therefore, a great amount of capital is needed. Since a large part of offshore wind farms is financed by debt capital, it was examined which criteria are currently prevailing on the market. The main findings are that cover ratios are the most important key figures in the decision-making process and during the term. Incubation breaks are necessary for any nesting bird but can increase the mortality risk of the nest or attending parent. How intrinsic and extrinsic variables affect nest attentiveness—the proportion of time a female is on nest during incubation— and subsequent survival of the nest remains unclear for uniparental species. We related female nest attentiveness to nest survival and tested the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic variables on nest attentiveness by female Lesser Prairie‐chickens (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) using GPS locations of 87 females at 109 nest sites in 3 study areas in Kansas during 2013–2015. Daily nest survival increased by 39% when nest attentiveness increased from 21% to 98%. Female Lesser Prairie‐chickens were 18% less attentive as body mass increased from 600 to 920 g. Daily precipitation and temperature, controlled for days into the incubation period, had interactive effects on nest attentiveness with nest attentiveness lowest on cool, wet days and increasing as temperature increased, regardless of precipitation (41% attentiveness at 16°C and 79 mm of precipitation to 90% attentiveness at 37°C and 41 mm of precipitation). Nest attentiveness increased by 11% as the quantity of grass at the nest site increased from 5% to 78% when visual obstruction was at 1 and 2 decimeters (dm) and increased 9% as the quantity of grass at the nest site increased from 5% to 83% when visual obstruction was at its maximum (3 dm). Our findings reveal the critical importance of nest attentiveness and incubation behavior, not only in relation to demography, but within the context of changing environmental conditions. As warmer temperatures and extreme precipitation events become more common and change the growth rates of vegetation, species like the Lesser Prairie‐chicken that are ground‐nesting, rely on vegetation cover, and exhibit uniparental care could experience negative demographic consequences. Growing threats to biodiversity demand timely, detailed information on species occurrence, diversity and abundance at large scales. Camera traps (CTs), combined with computer vision models, provide an efficient method to survey species of certain taxa with high spatio-temporal resolution. We test the potential of CTs to close biodiversity knowledge gaps by comparing CT records of terrestrial mammals and birds from the recently released Wildlife Insights platform to publicly available occurrences from many observation types in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. In locations with CTs, we found they sampled a greater number of days (mean = 133 versus 57 days) and documented additional species (mean increase of 1% of expected mammals). For species with CT data, we found CTs provided novel documentation of their ranges (93% of mammals and 48% of birds). Countries with the largest boost in data coverage were in the historically underrepresented southern hemisphere. Although embargoes increase data providers' willingness to share data, they cause a lag in data availability. Our work shows that the continued collection and mobilization of CT data, especially when combined with data sharing that supports attribution and privacy, has the potential to offer a critical lens into biodiversity. Basic oxygen furnace slag is considered a potential material for the replacement of natural aggregate in Portland cement concrete due to its similar physical characteristics. Therefore, in the present work, the slag was analyzed by Nitrogen sorption porosimetry, elemental analysis, mineralogical analysis, and volume stability. On the other hand, concrete mixtures were manufactured with basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag aggregates and characterized mechanically and morphologically. The results showed superior compressive strength due to interfacial improvements in the slag aggregate. Statistically, there was no differentiation between the reference concrete and the slag concrete mixtures for tensile strength. Additionally, due to the porosity and low stiffness presented by the slag, the concrete elastic modulus showed a slight decrease. The replacement of sand with BOF slag as fine aggregate in Portland cement concrete presents itself as a sustainable alternative for the elimination and valorization of this environmental liability. Reductions of green gas emissions and the reuse/recycling of industrial byproducts are important for the mitigation of the environmental impact of the construction industry. The replacement of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is a concrete binder with industrial byproducts that possess sufficient cementitious and pozzolanic properties, such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GBS) and fly ash. This critical review analyzes the effect of some of the most critical parameters on the development of the compressive strength of concrete or mortar that consists of combinations of alkali-activated GBS and fly ash as binders. The review includes the effects of the curing environment, the proportions of GBS and fly ash in the binder, and the concentration of the alkaline activator on strength development. The article also reviews the effect of exposure as well as the age of samples at the time of exposure to acidic media on the development of concrete strength. The effect of acidic media on mechanical properties was found to depend not only on the type of acid but also on the alkaline activator solution, proportions of GBS and fly ash in the binder, and the age of the sample at the time of exposure, among other factors. As a focused review, the article pinpoints important findings such as the change in compressive strength over time when mortar/concrete is cured in an environment that permits the loss of moisture versus curing in a system that retains the alkaline solution and keeps reactants available for hydration and the development of geopolymerization products. The relative contents of slag and fly ash in blended activators have a significant impact on strength development. Research methods used include a critical review of the literature, a comparison of reported research findings, and identifying reasons for agreement or disagreement of findings. Concrete structures are increasingly becoming exposed to organic acid attack conditions, such as those found in agriculture and food-related industries. This paper aims to experimentally verify the thermodynamic modeling of cement pastes under acetic acid attack. For this, a modeling approach implemented in IPHREEQC via Matlab is described, and results are compared with measured pH and compositions of equilibrated solutions (MP-AES) as well as unreacted/precipitated solids (XRF, XRD and STA) for a wide range of acid concentrations. The 11% replacement of cement by silica fume (SF) led to a 60 or 70% reduction (measured or modeled, respectively) of Portlandite content in the hardened cement paste due to the pozzolanic reaction resulting in higher content of CSH phases, which has effects on the progression of dissolution processes and a resulting pH with increased acid concentrations. Considering that no fitting parameter was used, the model predictions showed good agreement with measured values of pH, dissolved ion concentrations and composition of the remaining (degraded) solids overall. The discrepancies here were more pronounced at very high acid concentrations (equilibrium pH < ~4), i.e., after the full dissolution of hydrate phases due to limitations in the model used to describe Al-, Si- and Fe-gel phases and/or identified experimental challenges in precipitation of calcium and aluminum acetate hydrates. Styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) has been extensively applied to enhance the toughness of hardened cement. The instability of existing liquid latex leads to difficulties in storage and transportation, and even performance regression. Thus, the well-dispersed carboxylated butylbenzene (SISBR) latex powders were fabricated through the seed emulsion polymerization of liquid polybutadiene (LPB), styrene (St), itaconic acid (IA), and sodium p-styrenesulfonate (SSS) to overcome the difficulties. The dispersion performance of latex powders with various IA amounts was quantitatively evaluated using particle size distribution, zeta potential, and ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry. Results showed that the carboxylic ionic (COO-) from IA enhanced the dispersing abilities of SISBR latex powders, which ensured the uniform distribution in water. Based on this, the influence of latex powder on cement was assessed mainly by fluidity, isothermal heat flow calorimetry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and triaxial mechanical testing. Results showed the fluidity and dispersion performance of cement were improved with more IA in latex, while the hydration of cement was retarded due to excessive adsorption of carboxyl (-COOH) groups in IA. Triaxial mechanical testing showed that cement with SISBR-3 (latex containing 3% IA) exhibited the minimal elastic modulus of 3.16 GPa, which was lower than that of plain cement (8.34 GPa). Recent studies have documented benefits of small, prescribed fire and wildfire for grassland‐dependent wildlife, such as lesser prairie‐chickens (Tympanuchus pallidicintus), but wildlife demographic response to the scale and intensity of megafire (wildfire >40,000 ha) in modern, fragmented grasslands remains unknown. Limited available grassland habitat makes it imperative to understand if increasing frequency of megafires could further reduce already declining lesser prairie‐chicken populations, or if historical evolutionary interactions with fire make lesser prairie‐chickens resilient. To evaluate lesser prairie‐chicken demographic response to megafires, we compared lek counts, nest density, and survival rates of adults, nests, and chicks before (2014–2016) and after (2018–2020) a 2017 megafire in the mixed‐grass prairie of Kansas, USA (Starbuck fire ~254,000 ha). There was a 67% decline in attending males on leks post‐fire and a 57% decline in occupied leks post‐fire. Despite population declines as indicated by lek counts, adult female breeding season survival (Ŝ$$ \hat{\mathrm{S}} $$) was similar pre‐ (Ŝ$$ \hat{\mathrm{S}} $$ = 0.65 ± 0.08 [SE]) and post‐fire (0.61 ± 0.08), as was chick survival (pre‐fire: 0.23 ± 0.07; post‐fire: 0.27 ± 0.11). Nest survival appeared lower post‐fire (pre‐fire: 0.38 ± 0.06; post‐fire: 0.20 ± 0.06), but did not differ at the 95% confidence interval. Nest density of marked females declined 73% in areas burned by megafire. Although lesser prairie‐chickens persisted in the study area and we documented minimal effects on most demographic rates, reduced lesser prairie‐chicken abundance and reproductive output suggests full recovery may take >3 years. Increased propensity for megafire resulting from suppression of smaller fires, compounded by climate change and woody encroachment, may impose a short‐term (3–5 year) threat to already declining lesser prairie‐chicken populations. Context: Human-modified landscapes can structure species' distributions and supplant traditional biotic range-limiting processes. Understanding the direction and scale of these processes is necessary to enhance species conservation efforts. Objectives: We investigated how the distribution of a prairie-obligate carnivore, swift fox (Vulpes velox), is influenced by landscape pattern at the eastern edge of their used range. We also assessed the effects of a popular conservation effort, the conservation reserve program (CRP), on swift fox distributions. Methods: We used three years of detection/non-detection data (2018–2020) from camera traps at 381 sites to evaluate the spatial distribution of swift foxes at the eastern edge of their extant range in Kansas, USA. We used Gaussian Kernel functions to identify optimal scales of effect for measured landscape covariates and multiseason use models to reveal potential range-limiting constraints. Results: Swift foxes were more likely to occur at sites with moderate landcover diversity within 254.47 ha, greater proportion of shortgrass prairie (7.07 ha) and loamy soil types (0.79 ha), and lower proportions of CRP landcover (78.54 ha). Swift foxes were more likely to colonize sites with less diverse landcover, a greater proportion of loamy soil types, and lower proportions of CRP landcover. Swift foxes were insensitive to the proportion of row-crop agriculture surrounding sites (3.14 ha). Conclusions: Loamy soils and distribution of shortgrass prairie ecosystems may shape the periphery of the distribution for swift foxes. Landscape-scale use of CRP may constrain swift fox distributions at their range edge because managed vegetation structure of CRP does not mimic native shortgrass prairie. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of submerging geopolymer mortar samples in highly acidic solution for 7-, 28-, and 90-days on stability of mass and the development of compressive strength development was assessed experimentally. The mortar binder consisted of GGBS or blends of GGBS and fly ash activated using combinations of NaOH and Na2SiO3 solutions, and samples were cured in room temperature. It was found that maintaining mortar samples continuously under sulfuric acid doesn't cause reduction compressive strength or mass from one age to the other, up to 90 days. While decalcification, delaumination, and formation of calcium salts due to sulfate attack may have affected mass and strength, submerging samples under water supported formation of geopolymerization products C-A-S-H and N-A-S-H, and consequently increased the mass and compressive strength of cubic mortar samples with fly ash + GGBS blended binder. The resistance of mortar to sulfuric acid remained consistent when mortars were prepared using GGBS:fly ash ratio of 3:1, equal amounts of GGBS and fly ash, and GGBS as sole binder. When geopolymer mortar samples made with each of the three binders was left exposed to air after casting, compressive strength increased from 7- to 28-days after casting, but at 90-days, all mortar samples experienced decrease in compressive strength relative to the 28-day values. Acidic environments constitute serious chemical threats to concrete-like cementitious materials. The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the degradation of alkali-activated slag/fly ash mortars with different slag/fly ash ratios: 80/20 , 60/40 , and 40/60 in acidic environments. Mortar samples were exposed to three different types of aggressive acidic solutions: phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, and a mixture of phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid maintained at a constant pH value of 2.5±0.5 for a period of 150 days. Results showed that, for all mortar samples, the aggressivity of the phosphoric acid is greater compared to the other acids. Moreover, samples with a slag/fly ash ratio of 60/40 demonstrate the highest resistance against the three types of acidic environments. In addition, it shows that the degradation process of alkali-activated mortars can be divided into two degradation stages: an early stage and a subsequent stage. The chemical-reaction dominated early degradation stage is described by using Hill function, whereas a diffusion process–dominated subsequent stage is simulated with Fick's second law. Finally, the results of theoretical analysis predicted that the degradation depth of alkali-activated slag/fly ash mortars exposed to sulfuric acid environment (pH=2.0) for 50 years could be reduced by about 52%–60% compared to that of an ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based mortar. Muskrats Ondatra zibethicus are semiaquatic herbivores experiencing long-term and widespread population declines across North America. Translocation may be a viable tool to bolster or reestablish local populations; however, subsequent effects of translocation on muskrats are unknown. We live-trapped and translocated radiomarked muskrats (n = 65) during the summers of 2018-2019 in Voyageurs National Park, MN, USA and assessed post-translocation effects on weekly survival probabilities and space-use patterns. We did not observe homing behavior, though individuals moved an average of 2.2 km (SE = 0.30 km) from release sites and established home ranges within ~8 days (SE = 1.16 days) post-translocation. Weekly post-translocation survival probabilities (0.95, SE = 0.001) and average home-range sizes (2.52 ha, SE = 0.44 ha) were similar to other studies of non-translocated muskrats. Our most-supported known-fate survival model revealed muskrats using beaver Castor canadensis lodges had greater weekly survival probabilities. Additionally, weekly muskrat survival varied between years suggesting a positive response to a novel soft-release technique applied in 2019. Our study provides the first empirical assessment of translocation effects on muskrats and suggests translocation may be effective for establishing or enhancing local muskrat populations. This paper investigates the use of hidden Markov models (HMM) for Modern Standard Arabic speech synthesis. HMM-based speech synthesis systems require a description of each speech unit with a set of contextual features that specifies phonetic, phonological and linguistic aspects. To apply this method to Arabic language, a study of its particularities was conducted to extract suitable contextual features. Two phenomena are highlighted: vowel quantity and gemination. This work focuses on how to model geminated consonants (resp. long vowels), either considering them as fully-fledged phonemes or as the same phonemes as their simple (resp. short) counterparts but with a different duration. Four modelling approaches have been proposed for this purpose. Results of subjective and objective evaluations show that there is no important difference between differentiating modelling units associated to geminated consonants (resp. long vowels) from modelling units associated to simple consonants (resp. short vowels) and merging them as long as gemination and vowel quantity information is included in the set of features. This paper presents the influence of sulphuric acid on compressive strength of concrete made with cement blended with periwinkle shell ash (PSA). The cement component was replaced with PSA at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. Concrete mix ratio of 1:2:4 and a constant water cement ratio of 0.6 was used. A total of 180 cube specimens (150mm x 150mm x 150mm) were cast and tested for compressive strength at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of immersion in potable tap water (as control) and (5% and 10%) sulphuric acid solutions. Test results showed that the compressive strength increased with age and decreased with PSA content for specimen cured in water (control); while for specimen cured in sulphuric acid solutions, the compressive strength decreased with age, PSA content as well as sulphuric acid content. The statistical analysis of variance showed that the sulphuric acid concentrations, PSA contents and curing age have effect on the concrete compressive strength. Regardless of the concentration of exposure conditions, it is concluded that PSA did not lighten the adverse effects of sulphuric acid on the compressive strength of cement blended with PSA. The sustainability of health and social care systems is threatened by a growing population of older persons with heterogeneous needs related to multimorbidity, frailty, and increased risk of functional impairment. Since disability is difficult to reverse in old age and is extremely burdensome for individuals and society, novel strategies should be devised to preserve adequate levels of function and independence in late life. The development of mobility disability, an early event in the disablement process, precedes and predicts more severe forms of inability. Its prevention is, therefore, critical to impede the transition to overt disability. For this reason, the Sarcopenia and Physical fRailty IN older people: multi-componenT Treatment strategies (SPRINTT) project is conducting a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to test a multicomponent intervention (MCI) specifically designed to prevent mobility disability in high-risk older persons. SPRINTT is a phase III, multicenter RCT aimed at comparing the efficacy of a MCI, based on long-term structured physical activity, nutritional counseling/dietary intervention, and an information and communication technology intervention, versus a healthy aging lifestyle education program designed to prevent mobility disability in 1500 older persons with physical frailty and sarcopenia who will be followed for up to 36 months. The primary outcome of the SPRINTT trial is mobility disability, operationalized as the inability to walk for 400 m within 15 min, without sitting, help of another person, or the use of a walker. Secondary outcomes include changes in muscle mass and strength, persistent mobility disability, falls and injurious falls, disability in activities of daily living, nutritional status, cognition, mood, the use of healthcare resources, cost-effectiveness analysis, quality of life, and mortality rate. SPRINTT results are expected to promote significant advancements in the management of frail older persons at high risk of disability from both clinical and regulatory perspectives. Effectiveness of E. coli DH5α biofilm growth on mortar surfaces to inhibit microbiologically-influenced deterioration is investigated. Unlike traditional chemical deterioration processes through direct acid addition, biodegradation is realistically simulated through biogenic acidification using two species of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB). Calcium leach-out analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) suggest that E. coli DH5α biofilm prevents or controls microbiologically-induced mortar deterioration. The pH of the solution in the reactor containing E. coli biofilm-covered mortar did not decrease as the SOB was not able to grow. However, the growth of SOB in the control reactor with mortar increased the sulfate concentration to 6; 350 mg=L and the calcium leach-out to 69 ppm. SEM and XRD analyses showed the presence of gypsum on control mortar without E. coli biofilm; however, there was no sign of gypsum on the biofilm-covered mortar surface. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis shows that SOB did not attach to the surface of biofilm-covered mortar and the E. coli biofilm was still present after biogenic acidification. In this study, sorptivity, setting time, resistance to sulfuric acid, and compressive strength of mortars that use alkali-activated GGBS and fly ash as binders, were evaluated experimentally. The activation of binders, was achieved at room temperature of 22 ± 2 °C using combinations of sodium silicates (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions in ratios of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5. The parameters considered in terms of their effects on fresh and hardened properties include: NaOH molarity, activator ratio Na2SiO3/NaOH, mortar sample age, and relative amount of GGBS/fly ash in binder combination. Sorptivity, change in mass, and compressive strength were determined for mortar samples that were submerged in 10% sulfuric acid solution for 7 days, 28 days, and 90 days. The binder for mortar samples tested at each of the specified ages consisted of 100% GGBS (G100), 75%GGBS+25% fly ash (G75F25), or 50% GGBS + 50% fly ash (G50F50). The binder was activated using Na2SiO3 solution, combined with 10 M, 12 M, 14 M, or 16 M NaOH solution. It was found that sorptivity decreases with increase in curing age, for all activator ratios, concentrations, and relative amounts of GGBS/fly ash. Binder consisting of 75%GGBS + 25% fly ash with NaOH concentration of 12 M had the lowest sorptivity. Exposure of alkali-activated GGBS/fly ash mortar samples to sulfate attack did not cause loss in mass nor visible signs of damage/deterioration. All binder combinations experienced increase in compressive strength after curing in 10%sufluric acid solution, with the optimum G75F25 mix achieving a 28-day strength of 80.53 MPa when NaOH molarity is 10 M, which increased to 91.06 MPa after 90 days. Variation in concentration of NaOH didn't cause significant change in the magnitudes of 28-day or 90-day compressive strengths of G50F50. However, despite slow dissolution of fly ash and immersion in 10% sulfuric acid solution, G50F50 developed 28-day compressive strength of 56.23 MPa and 90-day compressive of 86.73 MPa, which qualifies G50F50 as high strength mortar for practical purposes. This paper describes a set of experiments aiming at the construction and evaluation of a new phrasing module for European Portuguese text-to-speech synthesis, using classification and regression trees learned from hand-labelled texts. Using the assessment criteria of matching boundary predictions against the corresponding labelled ones, the best solution achieves an overall performance of 91.9%, with 86.3% of correctly assigned breaks and 4.3% of false insertions. Although in absolute terms such scores may be considered surprisingly good given the size of the training set, the total number of exact matches at the sentence level is much lower (22%). This suggested a more formal experiment to test the acceptability of the predicted phrasing in the judgement of human evaluators. As the model was not trained on a labelled speech corpus but on hand-labelled texts, the reference phrasing needed also to be assessed. The evaluation experiment involved 90 participants who were asked to grade both the automatic and the reference phrasings, and also to express their opinion on where the breaks should be placed. As expected, the results showed a large variability among the subjects in their acceptance of a specific sentence partition, and criteria had to be defined to summarise the data from the different evaluators. With the adopted criteria, the performance of the automatic assignment procedure at the sentence level is better rated by human evaluators than by simple matching with the reference corpus (78% vs. 22%, respectively). This paper proposes and experimentally evaluates a method to determine the stressed syllable of a word in the framework of speech synthesis in Romanian. In order to produce high quality speech, a speech synthesis system needs information about the position of the stress for each word of a sentence to be generated. Otherwise, incorrect positioning of stress (or, in the worst case, completely ignoring it) translates into poor quality synthesized speech. Since Romanian is a free-stressed language (as is English, for example), the position of the stressed syllable within a word is not clearly defined. Consequently, a set of explicit rules that can determine the exact position of the stress is difficult to generate. In order to solve this problem, we propose an original method to find stressing rules for the Romanian language as well as an algorithm to implement this method. According to this algorithm, the position of the stressed syllable is computed according to a number of word parameters encompassing morphologic, phonetic, and lexical characteristics of the word. This article describes an unrestricted vocabulary Text-to-Speech (TTS) conversion system for the segmental synthesis of Standard Malay (SM) speech. The system uses a modified version of a synthesis method that was previously used to synthesize Arabic. SM bears some resemblance to Arabic in its phonetic structure, and this helped to ease the synthesis problem of SM using previous knowledge gained from working with Arabic. However, SM is different from Arabic in many respects. The method is, therefore, enhanced to suit SM after studying its phonetic properties. All other aspects of the segmental TTS conversion process will be dealt with in this article. These include rules for text preprocessing, letter-to-sound or grapheme-to-phoneme transcription, synthesis units' generation, strategies for the production of reasonably intelligible speech, results of intelligibility tests, and suggestions for future research directions. Concrete is a highly alkaline material; therefore, the presence of organic acids (acetic, butyric, lactic) from agricultural sewage constitutes a threat to the concrete and the environment. The investigations were aimed at simulating the influence of highly concentrated organic acids on concrete elements of livestock buildings. Cubic samples 100 × 100 × 100 mm of the ordinary concrete were immersed in 10% acetic acid for 270 days. Then, the compressive strength and mass decrement of the samples were determined as well as using SEM images and a 3D-profilograph to profile the surface roughness and depth of changes evoked in the structure of the samples by penetrating acid. The results were compared with those for a control sample (not subjected to the effects of aggressive agents) as well as for samples placed in a neutral and alkaline environment. The compressive strength of the samples stored in the acidic environment was 22.23% lower than that of the control sample, whereas the compressive strength of those samples stored in an alkaline environment were 44.27% higher. Conclusions from these investigations can be of innovative importance in the preparation of environmental impact reports, which are necessary for obtaining permission for the construction and use of livestock buildings, and afterward in the reduction of the impact of these buildings on the environment and surface and underground water resources. This paper investigates alkali leaching from geopolymers under various concentrations of acetic acid solutions. The effects of the raw metakaolin purity as well as fly ash-based geopolymer mortars and pastes are considered. A new methodology for (acetic) acid attack is proposed, adapting standard approaches, where the concentration of the leached alkali in the exposure solution is measured over time. The applicability of a simple diffusion-based mathematical model to determine the apparent diffusion coefficient (Dapp) for geopolymer pastes and mortars was validated. At the end of the paste tests, microstructural alterations of the specimens' cross-sections were analyzed microscopically, revealing occurrence of degradation across the outermost surface parts and, especially under acid attack, the formation of long cracks that connect the surface with the intact inner zone. Drastically different Dapp are discussed in terms of the differences in the mix designs, principally resulting in different alkali-binding capacities of the geopolymers, while the acid promoted dissolution and increased porosity. As a result of this interpretation, it was concluded that Dapp is governed mainly by the chemistry of the alkali release from the gel, as it overruled the effects of porosity and cracks. In this paper, we comparitvley studied acetic acid attacks on geopolymer (GP-M), calcium aluminate (CAC-M), and Portland cement (PC-M)-based mortars. Consequent formations of deteriorated or transition layers surrounding the unaltered core material was classified in these three mortars, according to different degradation levels depending on what binder type was involved. Apart from mass loss, hardness, and deterioration depth, their microstructural alterations were analyzed using test methods such as scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimeter (TGA-DSC), which showed the different mechanisms for each binder type. Elemental maps revealed the decalcification (PC-M and CAC-M) and depolymerization (GP-M) that occurred across the mortar sections. The mass loss, hardness, and porosity were the least affected for GP-M, followed by CAC-M. These results points out that geopolymer-based mortars have improved acid resistance, which can be used as a potential alternative to conventional cement concretes that have been exposed to agro-industrial environments.
