Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) have an increased risk of vascular complications. Despite the rise in the prevalence of T2D and its complications throughout the globe, there is a paucity of data regarding the prevalence and determinants of vascular complications of T2D in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to assess the prevalence, patterns, and determinants of the microvascular and macrovascular complications of T2D among adult patients attending a teaching hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: A retrospective study was done by reviewing the electronic health records of adult patients with T2D attending the general medical and endocrine referral clinics of Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from June 1, 2023, to November 30, 2023. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 25, was used to analyze the data. Descriptive analysis was used to summarize the sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory profiles as well as the patterns of vascular complications of T2D. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were fitted, and the crude odds ratio (COR) and adjusted odds ratio (AOR), together with the 95% confidence interval (CI), were computed to identify the determinants of microvascular and macrovascular complications of T2D. Results: A total of 272 patients with T2D were included in this study; 50.5% were females, and the mean (± standard deviation) age was 56.3 ± 12.8 years. The majority of patients (62.5%) had diabetes for ≥ 5 years. More than half (51.5%) had poor glycemic control with glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) value of ≥ 7%. The overall prevalence of vascular complications was 39%. The prevalence of microvascular complications was 23.5%, the most common being neuropathy (11.8%), and the prevalence of macrovascular complications was 21%, the most common being coronary artery disease (12.1%). The determinants of microvascular complications were age ≥ 60 years (AOR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.17, 4.33), diabetes duration of ≥ 5 years (5–10 years [AOR = 3.13, 95% CI: 1.37, 7.18], and > 10 years [AOR = 3.88, 95% CI: 1.66, 9.06], and HbA1c value of ≥ 7% (AOR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.14, 4.28). The odds of developing macrovascular complications were higher with diabetes duration of ≥ 5 to 10 years (AOR = 2.89, 95% CI: 1.37, 6.12) as compared with diabetes duration of < 5 years. Conclusions: This study demonstrated a high prevalence of microvascular and macrovascular complications in adult patients with T2D. Older age, prolonged duration of diabetes, and poor glycemic control were identified as the determinants for the development of microvascular complications of T2D, while prolonged duration of diabetes was the determining factor for the development of macrovascular complications. Hence, targeted initiatives are required to enhance the prevention and early detection of vascular complications of T2D in resource-limited countries like Ethiopia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Dental caries is a major, multifactorial oral condition that causes the demineralization of tooth enamel and impacts approximately half of the world's child population. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of dental caries among school-going children aged 7 to 13 years in Kabul city. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 491 students aged 7 to 13 years in Kabul during the first half of 2019. A multistage cluster sampling method was used, in which educational zones, schools, and classes were selected. The data were collected using pre-structured questionnaires through face-to-face interviews and oral examinations of students using dental probes and mouth mirrors while adhering to infection control protocols. The collected data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science version 21.0, and a p-value < 0.005 was considered as statistically significant. Results: The average age of the study participants was 9.9 ± 1.8 years. Boys made up approximately 45% of the participants, while 54.8% were girls. The overall prevalence of dental caries was 78.8%, with 62.1% in deciduous teeth and 42.8% in permanent teeth. Among students who did not brush their teeth, the prevalence of dental caries was 84.8%, compared to 81.7% for those who brushed once daily, 78.7% for those brushing twice daily, and 67.4% for those brushing three times daily (p = 0.022). About 10% of students had dental calculus, with a prevalence of 17.0% among those aged eleven and older, 10.0% among students aged nine to ten years, and 5.9% among students aged eight and younger (p = 0.006). Poor oral hygiene affected nearly one-third of the students, with 34.2% among boys and 30.9% among girls. Poor oral hygiene was more prevalent in students aged eight and younger (38.8%) compared to those aged eleven and older (25.9%) (p = 0.023). Conclusions: The prevalence of dental caries among students aged 7 to 13 years in Kabul schools was similar to that in most developing countries. Purpose: A growing body of research indicates a correlation between occupational exposure, particularly among individuals in driving-related occupations, and the incidence of low back pain (LBP). Methods: Databases were systematically searched, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and SinoMed, from their inception through December 2023 for relevant studies of the prevalence and risk factors of LBP among professional drivers. Subsequent meta-analyses were performed utilizing Stata 17.0 and RevMan 5.4 software, while risk factor indicators were assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation evidence quality grading system. Results: A systematic review and meta-analysis comprising 19 studies involving 7,723 patients indicated that the incidence of LBP among drivers was 39% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.20–0.57) in the past 7 days and 53% (95% CI 0.43–0.63) in the past 12 months. A subgroup analysis revealed a prevalence of 48% (95% CI 0.33–0.64) in 2005–2015 and 56% (95% CI 0.42–0.70) in 2016–2023. Among the identified factors, robust evidence highlighted age ≥ 41 years (odds ratio [OR] = 2.10; 95% CI 1.36–3.24; P = 0.0008), alcohol consumption (OR = 1.75; 95% CI 1.31–2.34; P = 0.0001), sleeping < 6 h/night (OR = 1.60; 95% CI 1.13–2.24; P = 0.007), uncomfortable seating (OR = 1.71; 95% CI 1.23–2.36; P = 0.001), improper driving posture (OR = 2.37; 95% CI 1.91–2.94; P < 0.00001), and manual handling (OR = 2.23; 95% CI 1.72–2.88; P < 0.00001) as significant risk factors for LBP. There was moderate evidence of a lack of exercise (OR = 1.78; 95% CI 1.37–2.31; P < 0.0001), working > 10 h/day (OR = 2.49; 95% CI 1.89–3.28; P < 0.00001), > 5 years' driving experience (OR = 2.12; 95% CI 1.66–2.69; P < 0.00001), a lack of back support (OR = 1.81; 95% CI 1.25–2.62; P = 0.002), high work-related pressure (OR = 2.04; 95% CI 1.59–2.61; P < 0.00001), and job dissatisfaction (OR = 1.57; 95% CI 1.23–2.01; P = 0.0003) as moderate risk factors. There was no evidence of body mass index or smoking as risk factors for LBP among professional drivers. Conclusion: The current evidence indicates an increasing annual trend in the prevalence of LBP among professional drivers. Factors including age ≥ 41 years, alcohol consumption, and sleeping < 6 h/night were among the 12 influential factors contributing to LBP in professional drivers. Violence across Latin America is an increasingly important factor influencing migration to the US. A particular form of violence that is experienced by many Latinx migrants is extortion. This research analyzes the extortion experiences of Latinx immigrant adults arriving at the US southern border and the impact these experiences have on mental health. We find that on average, participants paid $804 in extortion during their migration. The most common perpetrators of extortion in our study were police followed by immigration officials throughout Latin America. Pregnant participants were less likely to experience extortion and adults traveling with children were more likely to be extorted. Participants who were extorted for money reported significantly greater severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms compared to those who were not extorted. This research is the first of its kind to analyze extortion experiences among Latinx immigrants to the US, quantifying the prevalence, amounts paid, countries where extortion occurs, and perpetrators of extortion. In addition, extortion experiences are associated with negative effects on the mental health of newly arrived Latinx immigrants to the US. Based upon these findings, we recommend that extortion should be considered a significant stressor in the migrant experience, particularly for those adults traveling with children. Perinatal mental health is a major public health issue that arises during pregnancy and/or after birth, with substantial implications for social, parental, and maternal functioning, as well as overall quality of life. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of perinatal depression and its associated risk factors among women who visited a maternity hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Paropakar Maternity and Women's Hospital in Kathmandu. A total of 300 women in their perinatal period were interviewed. The Edinburgh Perinatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to measure perinatal depression. The Poisson regression model was used to determine risk factors associated with perinatal depression. The mean age of respondents was 25.5 (SD 4.5) years; average age during their first pregnancy was 23.5 (SD 3.7) years; and 53.7% of respondents were in the antenatal period. The prevalence of depressive symptoms (EPDS ≥ 10) was 40% (95% CI 31.4% to 45.8%). Unsupportive family members (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] 2.23; 95% CI 1.75–2.86), postnatal period (aPR 2.64; 95% CI 1.97–3.53), complications faced during delivery (aPR 1.76; 95%CI 1.30–2.39), history of intimate partner violence (aPR 0.48; 95% CI 0.36–0.64), and first pregnancy at the age of ≤25 years (aPR 0.61; 95% CI 0.42–0.88) were identified as key risk factors of perinatal depression. Strong family support and the active involvement of partners in counselling can contribute to alleviating perinatal depression symptoms. Background: Anaemia is a global public health issue that impacts individuals of all ages in both developed and developing countries. Anaemia is common in patients with diabetes mellitus; however, it is often undiagnosed and untreated. The main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of anaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus admitting to a medical unit at National Hospital Kandy. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients admitted to a medical ward at National Hospital Kandy (NHK). They were assessed with a pre-tested, interviewer-administered, structured questionnaire using consecutive sampling method. The data was entered and analyzed using SPSS 26. Results: Total 252 patients with diabetes were included. The prevalence of anaemia in patients with T2DM was 31.3%. The corresponding values for males and females were 34.2% and 65.8% respectively. Independent predictors for anaemia among diabetic patients were older age, female gender, poor glycemic control, diabetes duration > 5 years, diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, stage ≥ 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD), ischaemic heart disease (IHD), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and usage of aspirin. These were significantly associated with the prevalence anemia among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that female gender, age ≥ 65 years, diabetic duration > 5 years, poor glycaemic control, stage ≥ 3 CKD, diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy were associated with greater odds for the presence of anaemia. Conclusion: We found that 31.3% T2DM patients in a medical ward at NHK had previously undiagnosed anaemia. Anaemia screening during diabetes diagnosis, maintaining glycaemic control and raising patient awareness can reduce anaemia prevalence, improve patient quality of life and potentially reduce microvascular complications. Background. Despite global efforts to promote contraceptive use and ensure reproductive health, Somalia continues to face significant challenges in this regard. This study aims to explore the prevalence of contraceptive use in Somalia and identify the determinants influencing its use. Methods. A total of 8,162 reproductive‐aged women's data were analyzed extracted from 2020 Somali Health and Demographic Survey. The outcome variable was contraception use, classified as any contraception use (yes vs. no), any modern contraception use (yes vs. no), and any traditional contraception use (yes vs. no). The explanatory variables were factors at the individual, household, and community level. The multivariate binary logistic regression model was used to explore associations of outcome variables with explanatory variables. Results. The findings revealed low prevalence of contraceptive use among Somalia women, with only 7% reporting its use. Among them, less than 1% utilized modern contraceptive methods. Several determinants of contraception use were identified, including younger age, higher educational attainment (primary and secondary education), higher parity, exposure to family planning messages through mass media, urban place of residence, and residing in the northwest and northeast regions of Somalia. Conclusion. The results underscore the urgent need for substantial efforts to improve contraceptive use in Somalia. Strengthening healthcare facilities to provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services, with a particular focus on promoting contraception uptake, is crucial. Background: In malaria-endemic countries, asymptomatic carriers of plasmodium represent an important reservoir for malaria transmission. Estimating the burden at a fine scale and identifying areas at high risk of asymptomatic carriage are important to guide malaria control strategies. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of asymptomatic carriage at the communal level in Burkina Faso, the smallest geographical entity from which a local development policy can be driven. Methods: The data used in this study came from several open sources: the 2018 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey on Malaria and the 2019 general census of the population data and environmental. The analysis involved a total of 5489 children under 5 from the malaria survey and 293,715 children under 5 from the census. The Elbers Langjouw and Langjouw (ELL) approach is used to estimate the prevalence. This approach consists of including data from several sources (mainly census and survey data) in a statistical model to obtain predictive indicators at a sub-geographical level, which are not measured in the population census. The method achieves this by finding correlations between common census variables and survey data. Findings: The findings suggest that the spatial distribution of the prevalence of asymptomatic carriage is very heterogeneous across the communes. It varies from a minimum of 5.1% (95% CI 3.6–6.5) in the commune of Bobo-Dioulasso to a maximum of 41.4% (95% CI 33.5–49.4) in the commune of Djigoué. Of the 341 communes, 208 (61%) had prevalences above the national average of 20.3% (95% CI 18.8–21.2). Contributions: This analysis provided commune-level estimates of the prevalence of asymptomatic carriage of plasmodium in Burkina Faso. The work of wildland firefighters, especially of the so-called 'Brigadas de Refuerzo contra Incendios Forestales', is characterised by high physical demands and extreme operating conditions. These professionals face long workdays (12 h), walking with heavy loads (~25 kg), being exposed to high temperatures (>30 °C), and handling specialised tools in high-risk environments. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of occupational injuries among members of the 'Brigadas de Refuerzo contra Incendios Forestales' and its relationship to variables such as age and work experience. A total of 217 wildland firefighters (18 female and 199 male) correctly answered a questionnaire developed on an ad hoc basis to meet the study's objectives. A high prevalence of occupational injuries was observed among them (~76%). Age and work experience were shown to be significantly associated with injuries. Individuals over 35 years of age with more than 10 years' experience had a higher probability of injury (OR = 2.14, CI = 1.12–4.06 and OR = 2.46, CI = 1.30–4.67, respectively). Injuries occurred mainly during physical training (~46%), followed by preventive work (~33%) and forest fires (~20%). The most common injuries were tendonitis and muscle pain (~44% and ~21% respectively), followed by sprains (~21%). The results underline the need for physical activity programmes adapted to help wildland firefighters, especially older and more experienced individuals. The identification of risk factors such as age and work experience can contribute to the prevention and management of occupational injuries among this group of highly specialised forestry workers. Specific preventative measures during training are required to mitigate the risk of injury among these crews, who play a crucial role in protecting the environment and public safety. Background: The current professional nursing education program adopts various great attention for clinical practice to supply nursing students. Objective: To assess the prevalence and associated factors of stress and coping strategies of nursing students during clinical practice in the school of nursing, Wachemo University, Ethiopia, 2024. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional design study was conducted between January 1 and 12/2024. The total number of students was 421. Data were collected using the validated tool and entered using Epi-data Version 3.1 and exported to SPSS Version 25 for analysis. Binary logistic regression was done, and variables with a p -value of <.05 were taken into the multivariable analysis. Statistically significant was declared at a p -value of <.05 with AOR and 95% CI. Result: The prevalence of stress and coping strategies was 58.4% with 95% CI [53.6–62.8] and 52.0% with 95% CI [47.3–56.5] respectively. Male gender, private regular, and instructor guide were significantly associated with stress. Age group 19–24 years, having low grades, living in a university dorm, clinical staff guiding, instructor guiding, and asking unclear issues were significantly associated with coping strategies. Conclusion: About six in ten nursing students have stress. Being male gender, being a private, living with families, and instructor guide are significantly associated with stress. Therefore, managing gender-related issues, attending regular programs, living in a university dorm, and guiding the students might reduce the burden of stress during clinical practice. About five in ten nursing students have good coping strategies. Being age group of lower years old, having low grades, living in a university dorm, clinical staff guiding, instructor guiding, and asking the instructor about unclear issues were significantly associated with coping strategies. Background: Adolescent pregnancies continue to be a global issue that affects more high‐income, middle‐income, and then low‐income countries, with the latter experiencing the majority of cases. Aim: The current study looked into the prevalence and variables predicting adolescent childbearing in Ghana. Methodology: Data from the Ghana Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 2017–2018 was used to conduct an analytical cross‐sectional study. The results were examined with SPSS Version 20 (IBM Corp., 2011, and NY). Pearson's chi‐square and binary logistics analyses were done for associations. A p value of 0.05 was used to determine the analysis's statistical significance. Results: The total number of adolescents isolated from the 2017 Ghana MICS dataset for this study analysis was 2974. The mean age of the study participants was 16.9 ± 1.4 years with a modal age of 15 years. The prevalence of adolescent childbearing according to this study analysis was 12.3%. The predictive factors for adolescent childbearing were increasing age, decreasing educational level, Volta regional originality, ethnic originality of the study participants, and low economic status. Conclusion: The prevalence of adolescent childbearing in this study was significant and needs the attention of all. Programs to improve adolescent reproductive health must take into account multiple levels of elements, such as the individual, family, community, institutions, national, and international challenges that have an impact on such programs. Background: Opioid use disorder (OUD) among adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD) patients increases their risk of complications from sickle cell disease, such as infections, stroke, acute chest syndrome, sudden death, and organ failure. This negatively impacts families, communities, the national health system, and the economy. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with opioid use disorder among adolescents with SCD at Mulago Hospital Uganda. Methods: This study was carried out at the Sickle Cell Clinic of Mulago Hospital, the national referral hospital in Uganda. The study participants were adolescents aged 10 to 19 years. Following informed consent/ assent, a sociodemographic questionnaire, the WHO Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test - Young (ASSIST-Y), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI II), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder − 7 (GAD-7) questionnaires were used to collect data. Data was entered in EpiInfo and analyzed in STATA 15. Results: The prevalence of opioid use disorder was 5.3%. The significant risk factor was increasing depressive score AOR: 1.11(95% CI: 1.01–1.22, p = 0.035), while living with a family was protective against opioid use disorders AOR: 0.01; (95% CI: 0.0004, 0.27, p = 0.007). Conclusion: There was a significant problem of OUD among adolescents with SCD. There is, therefore, needed to integrate screening of OUD and mental illnesses like depression among adolescents with SCD and to emphasize the importance of family support in their care. Background: Corneal abnormalities are one of the important reasons for visual impairment. There is little evidence of the prevalence of different types of corneal abnormalities. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of various corneal abnormalities and identify the key risk factors associated with these abnormalities in an elderly population residing in Tehran. Methods: The Tehran Geriatric Eye Study (TGES) was conducted as a cross-sectional study, utilizing a population-based approach and employing stratified cluster random sampling. The study focused on individuals aged 60 years and above residing in Tehran. An ophthalmologist performed a slit lamp examination to evaluate the eyelid, cornea, and crystalline lens. Results: The prevalence of posterior embryotoxon (PE), punctate epithelial defect (PED), pigment on endothelium (POE), corneal dystrophy (CDys), corneal vascularization (CV), and corneal degeneration (CDeg) were estimated to be 0.08% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.02 to 0.40), 8.77% (95% CI: 6.64 to 11.51), 0.57% (95% CI: 0.33 to 0.98), 0.53% (95% CI: 0.33 to 0.82), 0.95% (95% CI: 0.60 to 1.52), and 44.87% (95% CI: 41.80 to 47.98), respectively. Overall, approximately 49.08% of the participants exhibited some form of corneal abnormality in at least one eye. The multiple logistic regression model revealed that increasing age was significantly associated with PED, CV, and CD. Furthermore, illiterate participants had a significantly higher prevalence of PE. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that approximately half of the elderly population aged 60 years and above in Tehran have at least one corneal abnormality, with corneal degeneration being the most prevalent. Background: Demographic characteristics apparently play a critical role in the incidence and prevalence of uveitis in different societies. Numerous studies have investigated the demographic-epidemiological factors and clinical patterns of uveitis in Iran; however, no study has been conducted in the west of the country yet. Objectives: To assessed epidemiologic pattern of uveitis in patients residing in the west of Iran. Methods: This study investigated 358 files of uveitis patients referring to the specialized retina-uveitis clinics in a referral hospital in the west of Iran from March 2016 to September 2022. The demographic characteristics, clinical patterns, and complications of uveitis were evaluated in this study. Results: The uveitis patients' mean age (± SD) at the diagnosis time was 48.14 (± 11.91) years (18 - 72 years), the patients with anterior uveitis had the lowest mean age (45.47 ± 11.54 years), and the patients with panuveitis had the highest mean age (52.90 ± 10.14 years) at the diagnosis time. The prevalence of the disease was equal in both genders; however, posterior uveitis and panuveitis significantly involved males more than females (P < 0.01 and 0.01 respectively). The most common anatomical pattern of involvement belonged to anterior uveitis (34%), followed by panuveitis (23.4%), posterior uveitis (22.9%), and intermediate uveitis (19.5%). The prevalent etiology in anterior, intermediate, and panuveitis were idiopathic and Toxoplasma chorioretinitis was the most common causes in posterior uveitis (34.14%). Moreover, acute clinical course and nongranulomatous pathology were also more prevalent. The most common complications of the disease were cataracts and cystoid macular edema (CME). Also, patients with panuveitis followed by posterior uveitis had the worse visual prognosis. Conclusions: The predominant pattern of involvement in patients referring to the referral center in the west of Iran was in the form of anterior uveitis, acute in terms of clinical course, and non-granulomatous in terms of pathology. Simple Summary: The treatment of a transverse maxillary constriction is a challenge for orthodontists, as the expansion approach depends on the midpalatal suture maturation. A conventional palatal expander provides skeletal effects in an unfused suture, while surgically or miniscrew-assisted expansions are suggested in a closed suture. The midpalatal suture development is affected by multiple variables, such as age, sex, and facial growth patterns. Consequently, we conducted a CBCT study among 263 patients aged from 8 to 20 in order to evaluate the relation between midpalatal suture maturation and age, sex, and vertical and sagittal growth patterns. The midpalatal suture was classified into five stages from A to E according to the progressively increasing maturation stage. The youngest individuals, the male participants, and the hyperdivergent subjects tended to show lower stages. Therefore, our study provided a further analysis of the potential predictors involved in midpalatal suture maturation that are useful to the clinician to choose the most effective expansion approach. Background. The evaluation of midpalatal suture maturation is essential to undertake the most predictable maxillary expansion approach. Several factors, such as age, gender, and facial growth patterns, seem to be involved in midpalatal suture staging and, consequently, in its opening; however, the link between these variables and the stages of midpalatal suture development remains poorly understood. Our study aimed to analyse the midpalatal suture maturation in relation to age, sex, and skeletal growth patterns by CBCT. Methods. We enrolled 263 patients (119 males and 144 females) aged from 8 to 20 years. The midpalatal suture maturation was defined according to Angelieri et al.'s classification using a low-dose CBCT. The chi-square test and linear regression were applied to investigate the suture stages by age, sex, and vertical and sagittal growth patterns. Results. Stage A was present in 8- and 9-year-olds with a larger prevalence in boys, while the prevalence of stage E increased progressively with age. Stage D was the most prevalent in our sample. The statistical analysis described that stage A was more likely in the youngest subjects, and stage E in the oldest participants. The males tended to have lower maturation stages. Moreover, the hypodivergent and normodivergent subjects tended to have higher maturation stages, while Class III was more likely in subjects in stages D or E. Conclusions. A total of 127 patients were in stages A, B, and C, showing an unfused suture. In young individuals, the opening of the midpalatal suture leads to a proper facial growth development by correcting the transverse superior hypoplasia. Background: Childhood obesity presents a significant public health concern globally, with implications for cardiovascular health and metabolic syndrome. In Portugal, approximately 31.6% of children are affected, highlighting the urgency for intervention strategies. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Portuguese school-aged children, with a focus on sex and age differences. Methods: Anthropometric measurements were conducted on 1564 children aged 6–10 years, including weight, height, and skinfold thickness. Body Mass Index (BMI) and the percentage of body fat were calculated using established methods. Results: The results revealed significant differences in BMI (≤0.001) and body fat percentage (≤0.001) among different BMI categories, with a notable prevalence of overweight and obesity, particularly among boys. A total of 37% of the studied population is overweight or obese, among which 40.1% and 33.9% are boys and girls, respectively. Conclusions: This study highlights statistically significant differences in BMI and body fat percentage for both sexes in different BMI categories. A large proportion of the population is overweight or obese, with a greater prevalence in boys. In short, childhood obesity has a negative impact on body composition and is associated with significant differences in anthropometric parameters, emphasizing the importance of preventative and intervention strategies to address this health problem. Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common liver disease in adolescents with obesity. Nonetheless, the guidelines for screening and managing this disease are contradictory. The purpose of this study is to non-invasively assess the prevalence, patient characteristics, and potential associated factors of MASLD in this demographic. Methods: This study used baseline data from an RCT in adolescents eligible for bariatric surgery. MASLD was determined by measuring the hepatorenal index (HRI) with ultrasonography, blood liver tests, and the fatty liver index (FLI). Results: A total of 56 adolescents enrolled in the analyses; the majority were female n = 44 (79%); the mean age was 15.75 (±1.01) years; the average body mass index (BMI) was 44.08 (±5.16) kg/m2. In 35 (62.5%) of the patients, the HRI was abnormal. This group had a higher waist/hip ratio, elevated liver biochemistry, and significantly lower leptin levels (mean difference = −46.35, 95% CI −76.72, −15.99) compared to the group with a normal HRI. In 32 (55.2%) of the patients, ALT levels were elevated and the FLI was abnormal in all (100%) participants. Linear regression analysis indicated associations between the HRI and typical anthropometric and metabolic measurements; and an inverse association between HRI and leptin B = −0.003 (95% CI −0.005, −0.00), independently of sex- and age-adjusted BMI. Conclusions: MASLD is highly prevalent in adolescents with severe obesity. However, the prevalence strongly depends on which tool is used, namely the HRI (62.5%), alanine transaminase levels (55.2%), and FLI (100%). Aims With an ageing population, the presence of asymptomatic valvular heart disease (VHD) in the community remains unknown. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and associated factors of asymptomatic VHD in individuals ≥60 years old and to evaluate the feasibility of echocardiographic screening for VHD in this population. Methods and results This was a prospective cohort study conducted between 2007 and 2016 in the UK. Asymptomatic patients with no prior indication for echocardiography were invited to participate and evaluated with a health questionnaire, clinical examination, and transthoracic echocardiography. A total of 10,000 individuals were invited through their general practices. A total of 5429 volunteered to participate, of whom 4237 were eligible for inclusion. VHD was diagnosed in more than a quarter of patients (28.2%). The most common types of VHD were regurgitation of the tricuspid (13.8%), mitral (12.8%), and aortic (8.3%) valves (trivial regurgitation was not included). The rate of prevalence of clinically significant VHD was 2.4% (2.2% moderate and 0.2% severe), with mitral and aortic regurgitation being the most common. The only parameter associated with significant VHD was age (odds ratio 1.07 per 1 year increment, 95% confidence interval 1.05–1.09, P < 0.001). The number needed to scan to diagnose one clinically significant case of VHD is 42 for individuals ≥60 and 15 for those ≥75 years old. Conclusion Asymptomatic VHD is present in a significant proportion of otherwise healthy individuals without known VHD over 60 years old. Aims The atherosclerotic profile and advanced plaque subtype burden in symptomatic patients ≤45 years old have not been established. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and predictors of coronary artery calcium (CAC), plaque subtypes, and plaque burden by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) in symptomatic young patients. Methods and results We included 907 symptomatic young patients (18–45 years) from Montefiore undergoing CCTA for chest pain evaluation. Prevalence and predictors of CAC, plaque subtypes, and burden were evaluated using semi-automated software. In the overall population (55% female and 44% Hispanic), 89% had CAC = 0. The likelihood of CAC or any plaque by CCTA increased with >3 risk factors {RFs, odds ratio [OR] 7.13 (2.14–23.7) and OR 10.26 (3.36–31.2), respectively}. Any plaque by CCTA was present in 137 (15%); the strongest independent predictors were age ≥35 years [OR 3.62 (2.05–6.41)] and family history of premature coronary artery disease (FHx) [OR 2.76 (1.67–4.58)]. Stenosis ≥50% was rare (1.8%), with 31% of those having CAC = 0. Significant non-calcified plaque (NCP, 37.2%) and low-attenuation plaque (LAP, 4.24%) burdens were seen, even in those with non-obstructive stenosis. Among patients with CAC = 0, 5% had plaque, and the only predictor of exclusively NCP was FHx [OR 2.29 (1.08–4.86)]. Conclusion In symptomatic young patients undergoing CCTA, the prevalence of CAC or any coronary atherosclerosis was not negligible, and the likelihood increased with RF burden. Background There are 2.8 million youth competitive swimmers in the United States (US), and shoulder pain is the most common complaint among swimmers. Purpose To determine prevalence of shoulder pain, disability, and dissatisfaction in youth competitive swimmers. A secondary purpose was to determine influence of age, competitive swimming experience, and previous history of shoulder pain or injury on shoulder pain, disability, and dissatisfaction, and finally to determine if sex, geographic area, and participation in a second sport relate to shoulder pain, disability, and dissatisfaction. Study Design Multi-site cross-sectional design Methods Six-hundred and seventy-one swimmers aged 9--17 years from six states in the US completed surveys which included demographics, the Penn Shoulder Score (PSS), and the Disability of Arm Shoulder Hand (DASH) Sports. Independent t-tests were used to compare pain, disability, dissatisfaction, the influence of age, sex, participation in second sport, geographic region, and history of shoulder pain. Linear regression analyses were performed to determine the interaction of these variables with reported pain and disability. Results Forty-nine percent of swimmers had shoulder symptoms. Greater shoulder pain and disability were reported in 15 to 17-year-olds compared to 9 to 10-year-olds (pain and disability: p<0.001), in swimmers with greater versus less years of experience (pain and disability: p<0.001), and in swimmers from eastern versus western states (pain: p=0.001, disability: p=0.0014). Swimmers not participating in a second sport had higher shoulder dissatisfaction (p=0.002). History of prior shoulder pain/traumatic injury was the best indicator of increased pain, disability, and dissatisfaction (p<0.001). Conclusion Almost half of swimmers surveyed had shoulder pain, with a higher prevalence found in older age groups, those with greater experience, and in those with prior shoulder pain or traumatic injury. Further research should investigate shoulder pain prevention programs, and surveillance methods are recommended to identify symptomatic swimmers who may benefit from referral to prevent further pain and disability. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the potential role of Caprini risk assessment model (RAM) in predicting the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing total hip or knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA). No national study has investigated the role of Caprini RAM after primary THA/TKA. Methods: Data from The National Sample of Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) in 2019 were utilized for this study. The dataset consisted of 229,134 patients who underwent primary THA/TKA. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) were considered as VTE. The incidence of thrombosis was calculated based on different Caprini scores, and the risk of the Caprini indicator for VTE events was evaluated using a forest plot. Results: The prevalence of VTE after primary THA/TKA in the U.S. population in 2019 was found to be 4.7 cases per 1000 patients. Age, body mass index (BMI), and Caprini score showed a positive association with the risk of VTE (P < 0.05). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis indicated that a Caprini score of 9.5 had a sensitivity of 47.2% and a specificity of 82.7%, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.693 (95% CI, 0.677−0.710). The highest Youden index was 0.299. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that malignancy, varicose vein, positive blood test for thrombophilia, history of thrombosis, COPD, hip fracture, blood transfusion, and age were significant risk factors for VTE. Based on these findings, a new risk stratification system incorporating the Caprini score was proposed. Conclusions: Although the Caprini score does not seem to be a good predictive model for VTE after primary THA/TKA, new risk stratification for the Caprini score is proposed to increase its usefulness. Background: Hearing loss is a common problem worldwide with a global prevalence of 20%. There is no local relevant study from Iraq about the prevalence of hearing loss. Objective: To assess the prevalence of hearing loss among patients attending the otolaryngology clinic, Ramadi city, Iraq. Method: This retrospective study was conducted at the otolaryngology clinic, Ramadi city, Anbar government, Iraq. Patients with hearing loss were enrolled in the current study. Data were gathered from patients record regarding the age, sex, type, side, and severity of hearing loss. Additionally, the number of cases were registered for each month during the study period. Results: Out of 8497, there were 2165 (25.48%) patients with hearing loss. The highest number of cases was registered in April (n = 246, 11.4%). The highest age group affected was 18–60 years (n = 1125) with slight male predominance (51.64%). The main cause of hearing loss was secretary otitis media (n = 762, 35.19/5). The vast majority of cases were with conductive hearing impairment (n = 2051, 94.73%). Unilateral hearing loss (50.76%) was slightly more than bilateral one. Mild hearing loss has outnumbered (n = 1905, 88%) the other severities. Conclusion: The prevalence of hearing loss was 25.48%. Hearing loss could affect any age with slight male predominance. Simple Summary: Chemotoxicity in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients impacts treatment compliance, survival, and quality of life. While clinician-reported chemotoxicity predicts rehospitalization and survival, a comprehensive understanding is lacking. This systematic review and meta-analysis studied chemotoxicity in CRC patients. The study found that 45.7% of patients experienced overall moderate-to-severe toxicities, with gastrointestinal toxicity (22.9%) and neuropathy or neutropenia (17.9%) being the most common. Risk factors included malnutrition, frailty, impaired immune or hepato-renal functions, short telomere lengths, low gut lactobacillus levels, age, female sex, aggressive chemotherapy, and low quality of life. Age was linked to neutropenia and gastrointestinal toxicity. Older adults had higher overall and gastrointestinal toxicities but lower neutropenia than younger adults. The study underscores the need for close monitoring and management of chemotoxicity in CRC patients. Community contributions have been instrumental in raising awareness about these issues, advocating for patient support, and future research to improve treatment toxicities in CRC. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) patients experience multiple types of chemotoxicity affecting treatment compliance, survival, and quality of life (QOL). Prior research shows clinician-reported chemotoxicity (i.e., grading scales or diagnostic codes) predicts rehospitalization and cancer survival. However, a comprehensive synthesis of clinician-reported chemotoxicity is still lacking. Objectives: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine chemotoxicity's prevalence and risk factors in CRC. Methods: A systematic search from 2009 to 2024 yielded 30 studies for review, with 25 included in the meta-analysis. Results: Pooled prevalences of overall, non-hematological, and hematological moderate-to-severe toxicities were 45.7%, 39.2%, and 25.3%, respectively. The most common clinician-reported chemotoxicities were gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity (22.9%) and neuropathy or neutropenia (17.9%). Significant risk factors at baseline were malnutritional status, frailty, impaired immune or hepato-renal functions, short telomere lengths, low gut lactobacillus levels, age, female sex, aggressive chemotherapy, and low QOL. Age was associated with neutropenia (β: −1.44) and GI toxicity (β:1.85) (p-values < 0.01). Older adults (>65 y.o.) had higher prevalences of overall (OR: 1.14) and GI (OR: 1.65) toxicities, but a lower prevalence of neutropenia (OR: 0.65) than younger adults (p-values < 0.05). Conclusions. Background: Current research has been inconclusive regarding whether hepatitis B infection is associated with an increased risk of periodontitis. This study aims to test the null hypothesis that no association exists between hepatitis B infection and an increased risk of periodontitis using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2009–2014). Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (2009–2014) to assess the rate of the prevalence of periodontitis in patients with and without hepatitis B infection. Participants who had tested for hepatitis B and periodontitis were included. The included participants were divided into no/mild periodontitis and moderate/severe periodontitis groups according to their periodontal status. The association between hepatitis B infection and chronic periodontitis was evaluated by multivariable regression analyses adjusting for age, gender, race/ethnicity, education level, income-to-poverty ratio, smoking, alcohol, BMI, ALT, AST, creatinine, hypertension, and diabetes. Results: A total of 5957 participants were included and divided into two groups: inactive periodontitis group (n = 3444) and active periodontitis group (n = 2513). The results showed that participants with hepatitis B had a higher risk of periodontitis. After adjusting for covariables, adults with hepatitis B infection were 38% more likely to have periodontitis compared to those without hepatitis B infection (95% Confidence Interval [CI]:1.085–1.754). Conclusions: In general, the results suggest that CHB is positively associated with the more severe periodontitis. Real-world evidence on the association between natural medicinal products and the recurrence of sleep disorders is currently limited, particularly when compared to the evidence reported for prescription hypnotics. In a retrospective cohort analysis, we investigated patients with sleep disorders prescribed either the natural medicinal product Neurexan (Nx4), benzodiazepines, or nonbenzodiazepines (Z-drugs) using the IQVIA Disease Analyzer database, which encompasses electronic medical records nationwide in Germany. A 1:1 matching procedure based on age, sex, prevalent depression, anxiety or adjustment disorder, and the number of medical consultations in the past 12 months resulted in four cohorts: patients prescribed Nx4 were matched with those prescribed Z-drugs (two cohorts with 8594 matched patients each), and another cohort of patients prescribed Nx4 were matched with those prescribed benzodiazepines (7779 matched pairs). Results from multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models demonstrated that Nx4 was associated with a significantly lower risk of recurrent sleep disorder diagnosis within 30–365 days after prescription compared to both Z-drugs (HR = 0.65, 95%CI = 0.60–0.70, p < 0.001) and benzodiazepines (HR = 0.85, 95%CI = 0.79–0.93, p < 0.001). Additionally, Nx4 was associated with a lower prevalence of depression compared to Z-drugs (HR = 0.90, 95%CI = 0.83–0.98, p = 0.020) and benzodiazepines (HR = 0.89, 95%CI = 0.82–0.97, p = 0.009). These findings suggest an association between Nx4 and improved sleep and mental health outcomes. Inadequate safe water supply and poor sanitation and hygiene continue to be important risk factors for diarrhoea and stunting globally. We used data from the four rounds of the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey and applied the new World Health Organization (WHO)/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) service standards to assess progress in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) coverage between 2000 and 2016. We also performed an age‐disaggregated pooled linear probability regression analysis followed by a decomposition analysis to determine whether changes in WASH practices have contributed to the changing prevalence of diarrhoea and stunting in children under 5 years of age. We observed a significant increase in the coverage of safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities over the period. At the national level, the use of a basic water source increased from 18% in 2000 to 50% in 2016. Open defecation declined from 82% to 32% over the same period. However, in 2016, only 6% of households had access to a basic sanitation facility, and 40% of households had no handwashing facilities. The reduction in surface water use between 2000 and 2016 explained 6% of the decline in diarrhoea observed among children aged 0–5 months. In children aged 6–59 months, between 7% and 9% of the reduction in stunting were attributable to the reduction in open defecation over this period. Despite progress, improvements are still needed to increase basic WASH coverage in Ethiopia. Background: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients has been described as a risk factor for worse outcomes such as peritonitis, technique failure, and mortality. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of MCI in a population of PD patients and identify the possible risk factors associated with MCI. Materials and Methods: We performed an observational, cross-sectional study to evaluate cognitive function using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) test and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) test in PD patients. Patients with diagnosis of dementia or severe neurologic impairment, active cancer, or infection were excluded. Results: We evaluated 66 patients (mean age 60 years); 53% were male. Prevalence of MCI assessed by MOCA test and MMSE test was 65% and 33%, respectively. Predictors of MCI with MOCA test were higher age (P = 0.0001), lower education level (P = 0.005), need of a helper (P = 0.009), and continuous ambulatory PD modality (P = 0.019). Higher Charlson comorbidity index (P = 0.002), coronary artery disease (P = 0.006), and peripheral artery disease (P = 0.033) were also associated with MCI. Lower Kt/V (P = 0.012) and lower levels of normalized protein catabolic rate (nPCR; P < 0.000) were related to MCI. MCI patients had more episodes of peritonitis (P = 0.047). Multivariable analysis showed that lower education, Kt/V, and nPCR were the most relevant factors connected to MCI (P = 0.029, P = 0.037, and P = 0.019, respectively). Conclusion: In our PD population, MCI was detected in more than half of the patients. Burnout is a state of emotional and physical depletion. Its occurrence among critical care nurses (CCNs) is a concept that has gained traction yet remains an issue with global consequences. Nurses are especially vulnerable to burnout due to the persistent stressors they are exposed to, which include the general work environment, biological factors, and emerging changes caused by COVID-19. This study aims to assess the severity of burnout among CCNs during the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated factors. A descriptive cross-sectional questionnaire was used in this study to measure the estimated burnout rate among CCNs in Palestine and establish associations with potential factors. Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire was used for the task. The results showed out of the 173 participants, more than 35% reported severe overall burnout. Per burnout domains, it was found that around 70% of participants suffered from low personal accomplishment, while 59.5% had severe levels of depersonalization, and finally, more than 65% of critical nurses had severe emotional exhaustion. Out of the various variables tested, gender, age, type of hospital, PPE, and fear of transmission were found to be associated with overall burnout. CCNs in Palestine were found to be severely burned out and should be dealt with before getting out of hand. The research found variables related to burnout contributed to burnout. Background: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are among the most severe complications following total hip arthroplasty revision (THAR), imposing significant burdens on individuals and society. This study examined the prevalence and risk factors of PPCs following THAR using the NIS database, identifying specific pulmonary complications (SPCs) and their associated risks, including pneumonia, acute respiratory failure (ARF), and pulmonary embolism (PE). Methods: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was used for this cross-sectional study. The analysis included patients undergoing THAR based on NIS from 2010 to 2019. Available data include demographic data, diagnostic and procedure codes, total charges, length of stay (LOS), hospital information, insurance information, and discharges. Results: From the NIS database, a total of 112,735 THAR patients in total were extracted. After THAR surgery, there was a 2.62% overall incidence of PPCs. Patients with PPCs after THAR demonstrated increased LOS, total charges, usage of Medicare, and in-hospital mortality. The following variables have been determined as potential risk factors for PPCs: advanced age, pulmonary circulation disorders, fluid and electrolyte disorders, weight loss, congestive heart failure, metastatic cancer, other neurological disorders (encephalopathy, cerebral edema, multiple sclerosis etc.), coagulopathy, paralysis, chronic pulmonary disease, renal failure, acute heart failure, deep vein thrombosis, acute myocardial infarction, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, continuous trauma ventilation, cardiac arrest, blood transfusion, dislocation of joint, and hemorrhage. Conclusions: Our study revealed a 2.62% incidence of PPCs, with pneumonia, ARF, and PE accounting for 1.24%, 1.31%, and 0.41%, respectively. (1) Background: This study investigated the association between body mass index (BMI) categories and comorbidities in the context of a developing country, utilizing data from a nationwide health screening in Mongolia. (2) Methods: The study included 181,080 individuals (mean age 47.0 ± 15.3, 42.0% male) from the population-based general health screening. We counted the number of diseases from participants' medical records based on ICD-10 codes, excluding those categorized under Z00-Z99 and codes indicating acute disorders, as well as individuals classified as underweight. (3) Results: Among study participants, the prevalence of two or more comorbidities was 4.2%. The weight distribution comprised 40.4% normal weight; 37.1% overweight; and 16.9%, 4.4%, and 1.2% in the Class I, II, and III obesity categories, respectively. Comorbidities increased with BMI: normal weight (0.222); overweight (0.255); and Class I (0.290), Class II (0.302), and Class III obesity (0.303), suggesting a dose-dependent likelihood of having multiple diseases. Adjusted linear regression (beta coefficients, 95% CIs) showed increased comorbidity risks in overweight (0.017, 0.013–0.021) and obesity (0.034, 0.030–0.039). Interaction analysis with age revealed a significant effect (p < 0.001). While comorbidities tend to increase with higher BMI categories in all age-tertile groups, this association was notably stronger among younger individuals. (4) Conclusions: Obesity is associated with a twofold increase in the prevalence of multiple comorbidities compared to normal weight. Our findings also highlight the critical role of age in the development of multiple diseases, with BMI remaining a significant factor across various age groups, encompassing both younger and older adults. Background: There is a lack of quantitative studies that specifically measure the association between the experience of pregnancy and unintended pregnancy. The present study aims to address the prevalence of unintended pregnancy and identify its predictors. Additionally, the study explores whether unintended pregnancy is associated with pregnancy uplifts and hassles. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 488 pregnant women between 20 to 40 weeks' gestation at the comprehensive health center in Tabriz City from February 2022 to January 2023. A cluster sampling method was used for sampling, and data were collected using socio-demographic questionnaires and the Pregnancy Experience Scale (PES). Descriptive statistics were used to describe the socio-demographic characteristics and the prevalence of unintended pregnancy. Binary logistic regression was employed to identify the predictors of pregnancy desirability. To examine the relationship between unintended pregnancy and pregnancy experience, an independent t-test was used for bivariate analysis, and a general linear model (GLM) was utilized for multivariate analysis, with control for potential confounding variables. Results: The prevalence of unintended pregnancies was 30.7% (24.3% unwanted pregnancies, and 6.4% mistimed pregnancies). The results of the binary logistic regression indicated that the lower age of both the woman and her spouse were significant predictors for unintended pregnancy (P < 0.05). Based on an independent t-test, the mean score for uplifts in women with unintended pregnancy was significantly lower than in women with intended pregnancy (mean difference (MD): -4.99; 95% confidence interval (CI): -5.96 to -4.02; p < 0.001), While the mean score of hassles in women with unintended pregnancy was significantly higher than women with intended pregnancy (MD: 2.92; 95% CI: 2.03 to 3.80; p < 0.001). The results of GLM showed that women who had unintended pregnancies had significantly lower scores for uplifts (B = -4.99; 95% CI: -5.96 to -4.03; P < 0.001) and higher scores for hassles (B = 2.92; 95% CI: 2.06 to 3.78; P < 0.001). Conclusions: The high prevalence of unintended pregnancies in Tabriz highlights the importance of targeted interventions to address this issue, considering the policy framework and unique challenges faced by women. Future studies should focus on developing context-specific interventions that effectively meet the needs of women with unintended pregnancies. So far, no study has investigated the relationship between the experience of pregnancy and unintended pregnancy, and the existing studies, which are qualitative and based on interviews, have examined women's experiences of unintended pregnancy. For the first time, our study examined the relationship between pregnancy experience and unintended pregnancy in 488 women using a valid questionnaire, the Pregnancy Experience Scale, which includes two parts: uplifts and hassles specific to pregnancy. Our findings showed that women who have an unintended pregnancy have a worse pregnancy experience in both uplifts and hassles specific to pregnancy. Also, limited studies have investigated the prevalence of unintended pregnancy in Iran, especially in the city of Tabriz in recent years. Our study, found this prevalence to be 30.7% in Tabriz, with 24.3% of women having no intention of getting pregnant and 6.4% of women experiencing pregnancy at an inappropriate time. Simple Summary: The epidemiology of primary liver cancer is changing according to effective primary prevention interventions, a strictly clinical follow up of chronic patients with hepatitis and successful drug treatments of virus-related liver diseases. A reduction in virus-related hepatocellular carcinomas cases was followed by an increase in the non-viral aetiology, including metabolic and cryptogenetic factors. We used cancer surveillance data to investigate determinants potentially associated with primary liver cancer survival in a southern Italian setting characterised by a high prevalence of hepatitis viral infections and overweight and obesity. Our study provided some new insights into the potential relationship between deprivation, geographic location, access to care and hepatocarcinoma survival. Comprehensive national and regional health plans should consider the evidence provided to ensure equitable access to prevention and care pathways. While entering the digital prevention era, interoperating cancer registries with other sources providing data on lifestyles and health determinants should be promoted. A retrospective observational study utilising cancer incidence data from a population-based registry investigated determinants affecting primary liver cancer survival in a southern Italian region with high hepatitis viral infection rates and obesity prevalence. Among 2687 patients diagnosed between 2006 and 2019 (65.3% male), a flexible hazard-based regression model revealed factors influencing 5-year survival rates. High deprivation levels [HR = 1.41 (95%CI = 1.15–1.76); p < 0.001], poor access to care [HR = 1.99 (95%IC = 1.70–2.35); p < 0.0001], age between 65 and 75 [HR = 1.48 (95%IC = 1.09–2.01); p < 0.05] or >75 [HR = 2.21 (95%CI = 1.62–3.01); p < 0.0001] and residing in non-urban areas [HR = 1.35 (95%CI = 1.08–1.69); p < 0.01] were associated with poorer survival estimates. While deprivation appeared to be a risk factor for primary liver cancer patients residing within the urban area, the geographic distance from specialised treatment centres emerged as a potential determinant of lower survival estimates for residents in the non-urban areas. After balancing the groups of easy and poor access to care using a propensity score approach, poor access to care and a lower socioeconomic status resulted in potentially having a negative impact on primary liver cancer survival, particularly among urban residents. Simple Summary: Over the last decade, early-onset colorectal cancer incidence has continued to increase. The disparities in outcomes and overall survival (OS) between early-onset colorectal cancer and average-onset colorectal cancer remain controversial. The aim of our study was to compare survival rates and identify potential influential factors affecting outcomes between these two groups. Our results show better overall survival and cancer specific survival in patients with early-onset colorectal cancer which could be contributed to better general health, fewer comorbidities and higher likelihood of receiving aggressive cancer treatments. Background: Early-onset colorectal cancer (EO-CRC) is defined as colorectal cancer diagnosed before the age of 50 years, and its incidence has been increasing over the last decade, now accounting for 10% of all new CRC diagnoses. Average-onset colorectal cancer (AO-CRC) has shown a steady decline in its incidence and related mortality over the past 20 years. The disparities in outcomes and overall survival (OS) between EO-CRC and AO-CRC are controversial. Our study compared OS and cause-specific survival (CSS) between metastatic EO-CRC (mEO-CRC) and metastatic AO-CRC (mAO-CRC) and identified the associated factors. Methods: Data on patient characteristics, tumor characteristics, incidence, and mortality were obtained from the SEER database from 2010 to 2020. We identified 23,278 individuals aged > 18 years with a confirmed diagnosis of all histological subtypes of metastatic CRC (M1 on TNM stage) using ICD-O-3 site codes. mEO-CRC and mAO-CRC were compared. OS distributions and CCS were analyzed using the Kaplan–Meier method and log-rank test to assess differences. A Cox regression model was used to assess the associations between variables. Results: mEO-CRC constituted 17.79% of the cases, whereas 82.21% had mAO-CRC. Most patients with mEO-CRC were 45–49 years old (47.66%), male (52.16%) and White (72.57%) and had adenocarcinoma histology (87.30%). Left colon tumors were most prevalent in both groups (40.26%) but were more prevalent in mEO-CRC patients than in mAO-CRC patients (49.63% vs. 38.23%, p < 0.001). Patients with mEO-CRC had higher OS (p < 0.001) and CSS (p < 0.001) than those with mAO-CRC. Patients with mEO-CRC also had significantly better median overall survival (30 months vs. 18 months, p < 0.001). The factors associated with worse OS included mAO-CRC (p < 0.001), mucinous adenocarcinoma (p < 0.001), male sex (p = 0.003), and a lack of surgical intervention (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Most patients with mEO-CRC fall within the range of 45 to 49 years of age. Patients with mEO-CRC were more likely to receive cancer-directed therapy (including chemotherapy and radiotherapy) and had better OS and CSS than those with mAO-CRC. This is likely attributable to the better performance status, fewer comorbidities, and better tolerance to cancer-directed therapy in mEO-CRC patients. Normal weight obesity (NWO) refers to a condition in which the body mass index falls within the normal range, but the percent of body fat is excessive. Although there are reports of a high prevalence of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in NWO, analyses regarding physical fitness have been lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the age-related prevalence of NWO and to examine physical fitness across generations. Our study utilized a dataset comprising 119,835 participants for analysis. The prevalence of NWO across ages was examined using cross-tabulation analysis. For body composition and physical fitness, medians and group differences were assessed by generation through Kruskal–Wallis and Bonferroni post hoc tests. Additionally, univariate logistic regression was adopted to analyze the odds ratio. The prevalence of NWO in Korean women was 18.3%. The fat-free mass of the NWO group was consistently lower than that of both the group with normal body mass indexes (Normal) and obese body mass indexes (Obesity) across all generations. Additionally, the waist circumference and blood pressure were greater in the now group than in the Normal group. When considering maximal strength, muscle endurance, power, balance, and coordination, the NWO group exhibited lower levels compared to the Normal group. The NWO group showed lower muscle mass than both the Normal and Obesity groups, resulting in significantly reduced physical fitness compared to that of the Normal group, similar to the Obesity group. This condition may increase not only the risk of posing a potentially more serious health concern than obesity but also the risk of falls in elderly people. Therefore, based on this study, it is crucial to not only define obesity using BMI criteria but also to diagnose NWO. Public health policies and preventive measures must be implemented accordingly. Background: Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, with more than an 11-fold increase in injuries from 2010 to 2019. Purpose: To (1) determine the prevalence and demographic variables associated with pickleball-related fractures among patients evaluated at emergency departments in the United States between 2002 and 2022 and (2) identify variables influencing patient disposition status. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: The US Consumer Product Safety and Commission's publicly available database, the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), was used in this study. Analyses consisted of descriptive statistics for fracture prevalence and demographic variables as well as univariate analysis for disposition status (discharged home vs hospital admission). Results: A total of 397 pickleball-related fractures were recorded between 2002 and 2022, which indicated a 90-fold increase in our study period. Based on weighted national average of NEISS sampling, this equated to approximately 5400 fractures annually. Players who sustained pickleball fractures were primarily aged >60 years (n = 344 [87%]; P <.001) and female (n = 273 [69%]; P <.001). Most fractures involved the upper extremity (n = 262 [66%]; P <.001), with the most common ones involving the radius (n = 79 [30%]), humerus (n = 22 [8%]), and ulna (n = 8 [3%]). Fractures were due most commonly to falls (n = 365 [92%]; P <.001) and occurred in the winter months (n = 142 [36%]; P <.001). There was a significant difference in disposition status, with most patients discharged (n = 320 [81%] vs n = 77 [19%] for hospital admission; P <.001). Univariate analysis revealed that age >60 years, male sex, and fractures to the trunk and lower extremity all led to significantly increased odds of being admitted (odds ratios: 2.27, 2.31, 2.89, and 13.8, respectively). Conclusion: Between 2002 and 2022, there was a 90-fold increase in pickleball-related fractures. Most fractures were of the upper extremity after a fall in women aged >60 years. Background: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) pose a grave threat to patient safety, morbidity, and mortality, contributing to antimicrobial resistance. Thus, we estimated the point prevalence, risk factors, types, and pathogens of HAIs in hospitalized pediatric patients. Methods: A point prevalence survey (PPS) of HAIs in hospitalized pediatric patients < 18 years old was conducted from March to May 2021. Outcomes, risk factors, and types of HAIs associated with HAIs in 41 hospitals across Thailand were collected. Results: The prevalence of HAIs was 3.9% (95% CI 2.9–5.0%) (56/1443). By ages < 1 month, 1 month–2 years, 2–12 years, and 12–18 years, the prevalence of HAIs was 4.2%, 3.3%, 4.1%, and 3.0%, respectively (p = 0.80). Significant independent risk factors were extended hospital length of stay (LOS) and central venous catheter (CVC) use. Compared to an LOS of <4 days, LOSs of 4–7 days, 8–14 days, and >14 days had adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of 2.65 (95% CI 1.05, 6.68), 5.19 (95% CI 2.00, 13.4), and 9.03 (95% CI 3.97, 20.5), respectively. The use of a CVC had an aOR of 2.45 (95% CI 1.06–5.66). Lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) was the most common HAI type (46.4%: 26/56). The highest prevalence of HAIs was predominantly observed in LRTI diagnoses, with the highest among these in the <1 month age category at 2.3% (17/738). Conclusion: The prevalence of HAIs in hospitalized pediatric patients was 3.9%. Extended LOS and use of CVC were HAI risk factors. A strategy for reducing LOS and reviewing insertion indications or the early planned removal of a CVC was implemented. The surveillance of HAIs stands as a cornerstone and fundamental component of IPC, offering invaluable insights that enhance hospital IPC interventions aimed at preventing HAIs. Background: Individuals living in communities with poor access to healthcare may be unaware of their high blood pressure (BP). While the use of community health workers (CHWs) can address gaps in human resources for health, CHWs in Uganda have not been used previously for BP screening and management. We report the results of an initiative to train CHWs to evaluate BP and to administer group-based education in Kalangala and Buvuma Island Districts of Lake Victoria, Uganda. Methods: We randomly selected 42 of 212 villages. We trained CHWs based in island districts on measuring BP. CHWs visited all households in the selected villages and invited all adults ≥ 18 years to be screened for high BP. We used the World Health Organization's STEPwise tool to collect data on demographic and behavioral characteristics and BP measurements. High blood pressure was defined as systolic BP (SBP) ≥ 140 mm Hg and/or diastolic BP (DBP) ≥ 90 mm Hg over three readings. CHWs created and led fortnight support groups for individuals identified with high blood pressure at baseline. At each group meeting, CHWs re-measured BP and administered an intervention package, which included self-management and lifestyle education to participants. The paired t-test was used to compare mean values of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) before and after the intervention. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to model longitudinal changes in BP. Results: We trained 84 CHWs to measure BP and deliver the intervention package. Among 2,016 community members, 570 (28.3%) had high blood pressure; of these, 63 (11.1%) had a previous diagnosis of hypertension. The comparison of SBP and DBP before and after the intervention revealed significant reductions in mean SBP from 158mmHg (SD = 29.8) to 149 mmHg (SD = 29.8) (p < 0.001) and mean DBP from 97mmHg (SD = 14.3) to 92mmHg (p < 0.001). GEE showed decreases of -1.133 (SBP) and − 0.543 mmHg (DBP)/fortnight. Conclusion: High BP was common but previously undiagnosed. The CHW-led group-based self-management and education for controlling high BP was effective in the island districts in Uganda. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with numerous changes in daily life conditions that could affect the psychological response of individuals worldwide. Objective: The study aimed to describe and examine differences in depression, anxiety, and stress in relation to living conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used. Purposive snowball sampling was employed to include 642 participants. Arabic versions of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation were used to analyze the data. Results: The total mean scores of depression, anxiety, and stress were 12.26 (SD = 10.53), 9.04 (SD = 9.34), and 13.49 (SD = 10.72), respectively. Of the study sample, 122 (19.5%), 139 (22.2%), and 99 (15.9%) had severe to extremely severe levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, respectively. Significant differences were found in depression, anxiety, and stress in relation to age, chronic diseases, and house size. Conclusion: The findings showed an increased prevalence of depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health practitioners need to recognize the impact of pandemics on youth, females, low-income populations, and individuals with chronic diseases. This cross-sectional study examines the population prevalence of blood lead levels (BLLs) greater than the sample median of 0.76 µg/dl in the U.S. population and investigates demographic factors associated with higher BLLs using data from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Logistic regression models were used to assess the impact of poverty status on BLLs, with adjustments for factors such as race, age, gender, and lifetime smoking history. This study found that individuals living in or near poverty had significantly higher odds of having a BLL >0.76 µg/dl when compared with individuals not in poverty, with an adjusted OR of 1.824 (95% CI [1.324, 2.513]) and 1.744 (95% CI [1.388, 2.190]), respectively. Introduction: Perception of illness (PI) and self-medication (SM) have been thoroughly explored in the existing literature. However, there is a lack of understanding about the mediating effect of health literacy on PI and SM in a non-homogenous population like Saudi Arabia. As such, primary healthcare nurses who have constant interaction with the outpatients have difficulty addressing self-medication. This study aimed to investigate health literacy as mediator between PI and SM among outpatients in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional approach and was conducted at 10 major primary healthcare (PHC) clinics serving 30 million individuals in 13 different regions of KSA. The 424 outpatients who participated in this study were selected through convenience sampling. Data collection started in November 2022 and concluded in February 2023. Results: The mean of the Brief Health Literacy Screening Tool, self-medication scale (SMS), and PI scores were 13.01 ± 3.32, 27.46 ± 7.01, and 45.56 ± 7.69, respectively. There was a significant relationship between the age and BRIEF scores (p = 0.039), and the level of education was significantly related to all variables, as were nationality and BRIEF scores (p = 0.001). Finally, occupation was significantly related to BRIEF and SMS scores (p = 0.001 and 0.003, respectively). Completing college and being non-Saudi had positively significant effects on health literacy (p < 0.01). The structural equation model (SEM) found no effect of PI on health literacy or SM behaviour (p = 0.263 and 0.84, respectively), but health literacy did have an effect on SM behaviour (p<0.001). Conclusion: Health literacy is an important factor in self-medication behavior and that PI is not directly related to health literacy or self-medication behavior, but that health literacy does influence self-medication behavior. Therefore, primary healthcare givers should promote public health literacy alongside the control of other conditions as one of the most effective ways to decrease the prevalence of self-medication and the risks associated with it. Background: To identify independent factors of cognitive frailty (CF) and construct a nomogram to predict cognitive frailty risk in patients with lung cancer receiving drug therapy. Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, patients with lung cancer undergoing drug therapy from October 2022 to July 2023 were enrolled. The data collected includes general demographic characteristics, clinical data characteristics and assessment of tools for cognitive frailty and other factors. Logistic regression was harnessed to determine the influencing factors, R software was used to establish a nomogram model to predict the risk of cognitive frailty. The enhanced bootstrap method was employed for internal verification of the model. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated by using calibration curves, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, and decision curve analysis. Results: A total of 372 patients were recruited, with a cognitive frailty prevalence of 56.2%. Age, education background, diabetes mellitus, insomnia, sarcopenia, and nutrition status were identified as independent factors. Then, a nomogram model was constructed and patients were classified into high‐ and low‐risk groups with a cutoff value of 0.552. The internal validation results revealed good concordance, calibration and discrimination. The decision curve analysis presented prominent clinical utility. Conclusions: The prevalence of cognitive frailty was higher in lung cancer patients receiving drug therapy. The nomogram could identify the risk of cognitive frailty intuitively and simply in patients with lung cancer, so as to provide references for early screening and intervention for cognitive frailty at the early phases of drug treatment. Background: Facial fractures are common injuries causing cosmetic, functional, and psychological damage. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) of facial fractures from 1990 to 2019 using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD). Methods: Detailed data for the disease burden of facial fractures were obtained from online available public data (Global Health Data Exchange) derived from the GBD study. The incidence, prevalence, and YLDs of facial fractures from 1990 to 2019 were analyzed by country, region, age, gender, sociodemographic index (SDI), and cause. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), age-standardized YLDs rate (ASYR), and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) were calculated to evaluate the disease burden and quantify the trends over time. The main causes of facial fractures in different years and ages were assessed. Results: Globally, there were 8.9 million incident cases, 1.5 million cases prevalent cases, and 98.1 thousand years YLDs in 2019. Compared with 1990, the number of incident cases, prevalent cases, and YLDs increased, while ASIR (EAPC, − 0.47; 95% uncertainty interval [UI], − 0.57 to − 0.37), ASPR (EAPC, − 0.39; 95% UI, − 0.46 to − 0.31), ASYR (EAPC, − 0.39; 95% UI, − 0.47 to − 0.32) showed a downward trend. The high SDI region held the highest ASIR, ASPR, and ASYR both in 1990 and 2019, such as New Zealand, Slovenia, and Australia. The burden was higher in men than in women from 1990 to 2019, while the ASRs in women exceeded that of men in the elderly. The ASIR peaked in the young adult group, however, the ASPR and ASYR increased with age. Falls and road injuries were the leading causes of facial fractures. Conclusions: Facial fractures continue to cause a heavy burden on public health worldwide. More targeted strategies need to be established to control the burden of facial fractures. Objective To determine if the prevalence of schistosomiasis in children aged 9--12 years is associated with the prevalence in 5--8-year-olds and adults after preventive chemotherapy in schools or the community. Methods We combined data from four community-randomized, preventive chemotherapy trials in treatment-naïve populations in Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya and the United Republic of Tanzania during 2010--2016 according to the number of praziquantel treatments and the delivery method. Schistosoma mansoni infection was sought on two slides prepared from each participant's first stool using the Kato--Katz technique. We assessed associations between S. mansoni prevalence in 9--12-year-olds and 5--8-year-olds and adults in the community before and after treatment using Bayesian regression models. Findings Stool samples from 47 985 5--8-year-olds, 81 077 9--12-year-olds and 20 492 adults were analysed. We found associations between the prevalence in 9--12-year-olds and that in 5--8-year-olds and adults after preventive treatment, even when only school-age children were treated. When the prevalence in 9--12-year-olds was under 10%, the prevalence in 5--8-year-olds was consistently under 10%. When the prevalence in 9--12-year-olds was under 50%, the prevalence in adults after two or four rounds of preventive chemotherapy was 10%--15% lower than before chemotherapy. Post-chemotherapy age-group associations were consistent with pre-chemotherapy associations in this analysis and previous studies. Conclusion The prevalence of S. mansoni infection in 9--12-year-olds was associated with the prevalence in other age groups and could be used to guide community treatment decisions. Aim: The purpose of this retrospective single-center study was to determine the frequency of sarcopenia and its association with mortality and other morbidities in children with chronic liver disease who had undergone liver transplantation. Background: Sarcopenia, a muscle-wasting syndrome, is common in patients with advanced liver disease and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. While sarcopenia in adults has been extensively studied, there is little information in this regard about children and adolescents with chronic liver diseases. Methods: The study included 108 children and adolescents who had undergone liver transplantation. Sarcopenia was measured using skeletal muscle index at the third lumbar vertebral level and assessed using abdominal computed tomography imaging. Results: The frequency of sarcopenia in the studied population was found to be 45.7%. Patients with sarcopenia were more likely to be male (P<0.0001), older (P<0.0001), and had lower height-for-age z-scores (P=0.012). Genetic/metabolic diseases were the most common underlying cause of sarcopenia in children. Except for a higher rate of transplant rejection in the sarcopenia group (P=0.035), there was no significant difference in mortality rates (P=0.688) or post-LT complications between the two groups. One year after LT, computed tomography-derived body composition parameters revealed no significant differences between children who survived and those who did not. Conclusion: Our findings indicated a high frequency of sarcopenia in children with chronic liver disease, implying that more research is needed to better understand its impact on clinical outcomes in this population. Introduction: Drug-Induced Gingival Overgrowth (DIGO) is a pathological growth of the gingival tissue, which may occur as a side effect of certain drugs including some antihypertensive drugs, anti-epileptics and immunosuppressants. The literature reports a prevalence of gingival overgrowth among antihypertensive drug users, ranging from 13.5 to 83%. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of (DIGO) and the risk factors associated with it in a group of patients who were taking antihypertensive drugs attending. Erbil Cardiac Center in Erbil, Iraq. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated 50 hypertensive patients treated with antihypertensive agents in Erbil Cardiac Center in Erbil region. Gingival overgrowth was clinically assessed using the gingival enlargement index (Miranda-Barent), gingival enlargement index (Miller & Dann) and (Silnes-Leo) Plaque index. Data on age, gender, smoking status, type/dose of antihypertensive medication, and duration of use were collected. Results: Mean age was 58.3±12.9 years, and mean duration of antihypertensive medication uses was less than 5 years in (52%) of the patients, more than half were male (58.0%). The most commonly used antihypertensive agents were Amlodipine (48%), combination therapy contains Amlodipine 5mg (24%), and non-calcium channel blocker (28%). The prevalence of Gingival Overgrowth (GO) was 83%, in Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs) group with the majority being grade I (42%). Gingival overgrowth was significantly associated with amlodipine dose, age and duration of drug use (p<0.05). Conclusions: The prevalence of (DIGO) in patients taking (CCBs) among other antihypertensive medications was significant. Major risk factors were greater doses of Amlodipine, older age, longer duration of drug intake, and larger amount of plaque in the sulcus or pocket along the free gingival margin. Background: Nocturnal infant crying is often empirically treated with acid suppressants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) in infants with unexplained persistent crying. Methods: We enrolled all infants (0–12 months) referred for suspected GER disease who underwent esophageal impedance–pH monitoring (MII-pH) for unexplained persistent crying not improved by parental reassurance, dietary modification or alginate. Gastrointestinal malformation/surgery, neurological impairment and infections were exclusion criteria. Demographic and anthropometric parameters, GER symptoms and questionnaires (I-GERQ-R) and MII-pH data were recorded and analyzed. Normal MII-pH was defined when acid exposure was <3%, symptom index was <50% and symptom association probability was <95%. Acid exposure >5% and >10% was also considered. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-Square and univariate and multivariable regression analysis. Results: We included 50 infants (median age 3.5 months) who fulfilled the study criteria: 30 (60%) had normal MII-pH. I-GERQ-R score was abnormal in 33 (66%) infants, and 21/33 (64%) had normal MII-pH (p = 0.47). In the 26 (52%) infants with nocturnal crying, MII-pH was normal in 16 (54%) (p = 0.82). Associated regurgitation (>3 or >10 episodes/die) did not predict abnormal MII-pH (p = 0.74, p = 0.82, respectively). Univariate and multivariable regression analysis did not identify any clinical variable significantly associated with abnormal MII-pH. Background: Children's initiation of early sex has several negative implications on their sexual and reproductive health, growth and development. In Ghana, few studies on early sexual debut have focused on adolescents. Therefore, this study examined the prevalence, causes, correlates and effects of early sexual debut among children aged 8 to 17 in Ghana using secondary data from the Department of Children of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection. Methods: A convergent parallel mixed-method approach guided the study. Descriptive statistics and multivariable binary logistic regression were used to analyse the quantitative data, while thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data. Results: The study found that the prevalence of early sexual debut among children was 13.2%, which is more predominant among female children. The main causes of early sexual debut include engaging in sex after watching pornography, self-desire to have sex, and being influenced by alcohol consumption. Also, age, sex, education, marital status, religion, ecological zone, living arrangements, and access to the Internet were significant correlates of early sexual debut. Early sexual debut increases children's risk of unwanted pregnancy, which leads to the termination of children's education or induced abortion. Also, early sexual debut had adverse impacts on the wellbeing of pregnant children and increased children's risk of multiple lifetime sexual partners. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that socio-demographic characteristics of children (e.g., age, sex, education, and marital status) were significant correlates of early sexual debut. Policymakers need to design appropriate interventions, considering the socio-demographic characteristics of children, to curb its occurrence in Ghana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Tobacco use in any form is a major public health concern. It accounts for nearly 1.35 million deaths every year. Many chronic illnesses occur due to the consumption of tobacco, either smoke or smokeless form. The study aims to explore how smoking and smokeless tobacco consumption are distributed across a range of demographic and socioeconomic markers among Khasi indigenous people in Northeast India. Materials and Methods: It is a case-control study conducted in adults over 31 years of age. The study was carried out between June 2020 and August 2021. An Independent t-test was performed to determine the significant difference in age between smoking/smokeless tobacco users and non-tobacco users. Univariate and Multivariate analyses were conducted to determine the significant predictors affecting the use of smoking/smokeless tobacco in the respondents. Results: A total of 505 respondents were included in the present study. There was a high statistically significant difference in the income level of tobacco and non-tobacco users (P value- 0.002). In Univariate analysis, it was found that the odds of consuming both forms of tobacco were significantly lower in the respondents aged between 51--60 (OR = 0.61, P value = 0.0453). The participants who studied till graduation and above had lower odds of both using forms of tobacco as compared to respondents who were illiterate/primary educated only (OR = 0.85, P value = 0.046). Conclusion: In conclusion, smoking and smokeless tobacco consumption are still widely prevalent in this region and strongly associated with age, gender, level of education, and place of residence. There is a need for further detailed analysis to identify risk factors that are strongly associated with the use of smoke and smokeless tobacco so that the community will be conscious about the hazardous effects of tobacco use in any form. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease in the US and can increase the risk of depression. Both depression and OA disproportionately affect women, yet this study is one of few on depression prevalence, treatment across age groups, and predictors in women with OA. Data were extracted from the 2011–March 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Women aged ≥ 45 years with self-reported osteo- or degenerative arthritis were included. Outcomes were depression (assessed with PHQ-9) and treatment (self-reported pharmacotherapy and mental health services). Logistic regression was used to examine associations between age group, covariates, and outcomes. Overall, depression prevalence was 8%, with higher proportions among those 45–64 years old. Aging was associated with reduced odds of depression (Age 65–79: OR 0.68 (95% CI: 0.52–0.89); Age 80+: OR 0.49 (95% CI: 0.33–0.74); vs. Age 45–54). Of those with a positive depression screen, 21.6% documented some form of treatment. Age group was not statistically different between those treated and those not treated. Women aged 45–64 with osteoarthritis may be at increased risk of depression, and most are not treated. As depression is related to increased pain and risk of rehospitalization, future research should prioritize interventions to increase uptake of depression treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined specific clinical risk factors for age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass in late middle-aged women with sarcopenia. This Korean nationwide cross-sectional study analyzed data from 2814 community-dwelling women aged from 50 to 64 years old and screened them for sarcopenia. This study examined various risk factors such as age; height; weight; body mass index; waist circumference; skeletal muscle mass index; systolic and diastolic blood pressure; smoking and drinking habits; fasting glucose levels; triglyceride; and cholesterol levels. Complex sampling analysis was used for the data set. Prevalence of sarcopenia with a weighted prevalence of 13.43% (95% confidence interval: 2.15–15.78). The risk factors for sarcopenia were height, body mass index, waist circumference, skeletal muscle mass index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, triglyceride level, and total cholesterol level (p < 0.05). Weight, fasting glucose level, drinking status, and smoking status were not significant (p > 0.05). These results are expected to contribute to the existing literature on sarcopenia and identify potential risk factors associated with the development of sarcopenia in late middle-aged females. By acknowledging prevalence and recognized risk factors, healthcare professionals may augment their proficiency in recognizing and discerning potential instances of sarcopenia in female patients.
