Agricultural activity is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. The fertilizer production process emits N2O, CO2, and CH4, and fertilized croplands emit N2O. We present continuous airborne observations of these trace gases in the Lower Mississippi River Basin to quantify emissions from both fertilizer plants and croplands during the early growing season. Observed hourly emission rates from two fertilizer plants are compared with reported inventory values, showing agreement for N2O and CO2 emissions but large underestimation in reported CH4 emissions by up to a factor of 100. These CH4 emissions are consistent with loss rates of 0.6–1.2%. We quantify regional emission fluxes (100 km) of N2O using the airborne mass balance technique, a first application for N2O, and explore linkages to controlling processes. Finally, we demonstrate the ability to use airborne measurements to distinguish N2O emission differences between neighboring fields, determining we can distinguish different emission behaviors of regions on the order of 2.5 km2 with emissions differences of approximately 0.026 μmol m−2 s−1. This suggests airborne approaches such as outlined here could be used to evaluate the impact of different agricultural practices at critical field‐size spatial scales. This paper describes 10 core features of a neuropsychological assessment with the aim of helping neurologists understand the unique contribution the evaluation can make within the wider context of diagnostic methods in epilepsy. The possibilities, limitations and cautions associated with the investigation are discussed under the following headings. (1) A neuropsychological assessment is a collaborative investigation. (2) Assessment prior to treatment allows for the accurate assessment of treatment effects. (3) The nature of an underlying lesion and its neurodevelopmental context play an important role in shaping the associated neuropsychological deficit. (4) Cognitive and behavioural impairments result from the essential comorbidities of epilepsy which can be considered as much a disorder of cognition and behaviour as of seizures. (5) Patients' subjective complaints can help us understand objective cognitive impairments and their underlying neuroanatomy, resulting in improved patient care. At other times, patient complaints reflect other factors and require careful interpretation. (6) The results from a neuropsychological assessment can be used to maximize the educational and occupational potentials of people with epilepsy. (7) Not all patients are able to engage with a neuropsychological assessment. (8) There are limitations in assessments conducted in a second language with tests that have been standardized on different populations from that of the patient. (9) Adequate intervals between assessments maximize sensitivity to meaningful change. It is widely accepted that photosynthetic bacteria played a crucial role in Fe( II) oxidation and the precipitation of iron formations ( IF) during the Late Archean-Early Paleoproterozoic (2.7-2.4 Ga). It is less clear whether microbes similarly caused the deposition of the oldest IF at ca. 3.8 Ga, which would imply photosynthesis having already evolved by that time. Abiological alternatives, such as the direct oxidation of dissolved Fe( II) by ultraviolet radiation may have occurred, but its importance has been discounted in environments where the injection of high concentrations of dissolved iron directly into the photic zone led to chemical precipitation reactions that overwhelmed photooxidation rates. However, an outstanding possibility remains with respect to photochemical reactions occurring in the atmosphere that might generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a recognized strong oxidant for ferrous iron. Here, we modeled the amount of H2O2 that could be produced in an Eoarchean atmosphere using updated solar fluxes and plausible CO2, O2, and CH4 mixing ratios. Irrespective of the atmospheric simulations, the upper limit of H2O2 rainout was calculated to be <106 molecules cm−2 s−1. Using conservative Fe( III) sedimentation rates predicted for submarine hydrothermal settings in the Eoarchean, we demonstrate that the flux of H2O2 was insufficient by several orders of magnitude to account for IF deposition (requiring ~1011 H2O2 molecules cm−2 s−1). This finding further constrains the plausible Fe( II) oxidation mechanisms in Eoarchean seawater, leaving, in our opinion, anoxygenic phototrophic Fe( II)-oxidizing micro-organisms the most likely mechanism responsible for Earth's oldest IF. Sulfonamides are among the oldest, but still effective, antimicrobial veterinary medicines. In steers and dairy cows, the sulfonamides are effective in the treatment of respiratory disease and general infections. Sulfadimethoxine (SDM) has been approved by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in steers and dairy cows with a tolerance of 100 ng/g (ppb) in edible tissues and 10 ppb in milk. The detection of SDM residue above tolerance in the animal slaughtered for food process will result in the whole carcass being discarded. This report describes a comprehensive depletion study of SDM (and its main metabolite) in plasma, urine, oral fluid, kidney, and liver. In this study, nine steers were injected intravenously with the approved dose of SDM; the loading dose was 55 mg/kg, followed by 27.5 mg/kg dose at 24 h and again at 48 h. Fluids (blood, urine, and saliva) and tissue (liver and kidney) samples were collected at intervals after the last dose of SMD. The combination of laparoscopic serial sampling technique with the liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry method provided the data to establish the tissue/fluid correlation in the depletion of SMD. A strong correlation and linearity of the log-scale concentration over time in the depletion stage has been confirmed for kidney, liver, and plasma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neuropeptide AF (NPAF), a member of the RFamide family, is encoded by the same gene as neuropeptide FF (NPFF), which causes short-term anorexia. However, reports on the role of NPAF on appetite-related process are lacking. Thus, i.c.v. injections of 4.0, 8.0 and 16.0 nmol NPAF were administered to chicks to observe its effect on food and water intake. Chicks treated with 8.0 and 16.0 nmol i.c.v. NPAF decreased both their food and water intake. Additionally, all doses of NPAF injected caused a similar reduction in whole blood glucose concentration 180 min after injection. In a second experiment, chicks that received i.c.v. NPAF had an increased number of c-Fos immunoreactive cells in the dorsomedial, paraventricular (magnocellular and parvicellular parts) and ventromedial nuclei. The arcuate nucleus and lateral hypothalamic area were not affected. In a third experiment, NPAF-treated chicks exhibited fewer feeding pecks and spent less time perching, whereas they spent an increased time in deep rest. Other behaviours, including exploratory pecking, escape attempts, defecations, distance moved, and time spent standing, sitting and preening, were not affected by NPAF injection. The human protease plasmin plays a crucial role in the capacity of the group A streptococcus (GAS; Streptococus pyogenes) to initiate invasive disease. The GAS strain NS88.2 was isolated from a case of bacteremia from the Northern Territory of Australia, a region with high rates of GAS invasive disease. Mutagenesis of the NS88.2 plasminogen binding M protein Prp was undertaken to examine the contribution of plasminogen binding and cell surface plasmin acquisition to virulence. The isogenic mutant NS88.2prp was engineered whereby four amino acid residues critical for plasminogen binding were converted to alanine codons in the GAS genome sequence. The mutated residues were reverse complemented to the wild-type sequence to construct GAS strain NS88.2prpRC. In comparison to NS88.2 and NS88.2prpRC, the NS88.2prp mutant exhibited significantly reduced ability to bind human plasminogen and accumulate cell surface plasmin activity during growth in human plasma. Utilizing a humanized plasminogen mouse model of invasive infection, we demonstrate that the capacity to bind plasminogen and accumulate surface plasmin activity plays an essential role in GAS virulence. The anorexigenic 20 amino acid neuropeptide S (NPS) has not been studied in an animal model of hypo- or hyperphagia. The present study aimed to elucidate whether central NPS appetite-related effects are different in lines of chickens that had undergone long-term divergent selection for low (LWS) or high (HWS) body weight and that were hypo- and hyperphagic, respectively. It took a longer time for food intake to be reduced in LWS than HWS chicks administered the lowest dose of NPS tested (0.14 nmol) and, at the highest dose tested (0.56 nmol), they had a greater reduction in food intake than did HWS chicks. HWS chicks responded with a similar magnitude of food intake reduction that was independent of NPS dose. Although water intake was reduced concurrently with food intake after central NPS in both lines, blood glucose concentrations were not affected. Hypothalamic signalling was different between the lines. Although both lines respond to central NPS with decreased c-Fos immunoreactivity in the lateral hypothalamus, the periventricular nucleus had increased c-Fos immunoreactivity in LWS but not HWS chicks. After central NPS treatment, there was increased c-Fos immunoreactivity in the paraventricular nucleus in HWS but not LWS chicks. These data support the notion of differences in the central NPS system between the LWS and HWS lines and infer that central NPS may differentially affect appetite-related processes in other species that contain hypo- and hyperphagic individuals. The melanocortin system together with other appetite-related systems plays a significant role in appetite regulation. The appetite-related effects of one such melanocortin, β-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), are well documented in rodents; however, its effects in the avian class are not thoroughly understood. Thus, we designed a study to determine the effects of i.c.v. β-MSH injection on food and water intake, plasma corticosterone concentration, ingestive and non-ingestive behaviours, and hypothalamic neuronal activation using Cobb-500 chicks. Chicks responded to β-MSH-treatment with a reduction in food and water intake; however when water intake was measured independently of food intake, it was not affected. β-MSH-treated chicks also had increased plasma corticosterone concentrations and increased c-Fos reactivity in the periventricular, paraventricular and infundibular nuclei, and the ventromedial hypothalamus; however, the lateral hypothalamus was not affected. The effect on food intake is primary because behaviours that may be competitive with food intake were not increased in β-MSH-treated chicks. Based on these results, we conclude that β-MSH causes anorexigenic effects that are likely primarily mediated via stimulation of satiety-related hypothalamic nuclei in broiler-type chicks. Objectives To develop an encapsulation method for delivery of vaccines to feral pigs, and quantify the effect of iophenoxic acid on captive feral pig blood iodine concentrations to assist in investigation of factors affecting vaccine uptake. Design and methods Feral pigs were administered iophenoxic acid by oral gavage, and consumption was assessed for different encapsulation methods in baits. Blood iodine concentrations were monitored for eight days after consumption. The relationship between dose rate, time since dosing and blood iodine concentration was assessed for gavaged and baited captive feral pigs. Wild feral pigs were baited with PIGOUT® baits containing 20 mg of encapsulated iophenoxic acid to simulate a vaccination program. Using knowledge from the pen studies, bait uptake and factors affecting bait uptake were investigated. Results Bait-delivered iophenoxic acid led to variable and inconsistent changes in blood iodine concentrations, in contrast to pigs receiving iophenoxic acid by gavage. This precluded accurate assessment of the quantity consumed, but still allowed a conservative determination of bait uptake. Iophenoxic acid in smaller capsules was consumed readily. Increasing baiting intensity appeared to increase bait uptake by wild feral pigs, and pigs of varying sexes, ages and weights appeared equally likely to consume baits. Conclusions Encapsulated liquids can be delivered to feral pigs within baits, should the need to vaccinate feral pigs for fertility or disease management arise. Patterns of habitat use by some passerines change after the young leave the nest, and thus our understanding of habitat selection derived from counts of singing males earlier in the nesting cycle may not adequately represent the breeding habitat requirements of these species. Post-fledging changes in habitat use may have important conservation implications if the survival of fledglings is affected by characteristics of the habitat; however, there have been relatively few systematic studies of the post-fledging ecology of forest passerines and, of these, even fewer have incorporated analyses of the relationship between habitat characteristics and fledgling survival. We studied the post-fledging habitat selection and survival of ovenbirds Seiurus aurocapilla in northern New Hampshire, USA during two breeding seasons using radio telemetry. Habitat at sites used by radio-marked fledgling ovenbirds was characterized by fewer large trees and greater vertical structure 0–3 m above ground than ovenbird nest sites. Similarly, habitat at sites used by fledgling ovenbirds was characterized by fewer large trees and greater vertical structure than unused sites. Most (80%) of the 15 mortalities that we observed were due to predation. Nine (70%) of these occurred within the first 3 days of fledging, resulting in a significant drop in survival during this period. Fledgling survival increased significantly with increased vegetation structure. Our observations that fledgling ovenbirds are selective in their habitat use, that they select different habitat features than adult ovenbirds select for nesting and that fledgling survival is positively associated with these habitat features suggest that the use of habitat models based on counts of singing males before fledging does not adequately represent the habitat needs of this species. Conceivably, mortality during the post-fledging period could limit recruitment to levels insufficient to maintain the viability of ovenbird population even if adequate nesting habitat were available. Reduced in vitro mitogen-stimulated proliferative responses have routinely been observed from astronauts' mononuclear leucocytes following space flight. This study investigated the effect of space flight on subpopulations of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 30 shuttle astronauts prior to launch, upon landing and 3 .days after flight. The total number of peripheral blood leucocytes, granulocytes and monocytes were increased after space flight (5·7 ± 0·2 versus 7·0±0·2; 3·1 ±0·1 versus 5·0 ± 0·1; and 0·16 ±0·02 versus 0·25 ± 0·28 × 10³ cells/mm³, respectively) whereas lymphocytes were decreased (2·2±0·1 versus 1·7±0·1× 10³ cells/mm³). Flow cytometry analysis on Ficoll- Hypaque isolated mononuclear cells upon landing revealed significant decreases in T-inducer(CD4+, Leu-8+ 32±2 versus 23±2%) and T-cytotoxic lymphocytes (CD8+, CD11b-; 17±1 versus 12± 1%), and increases in monocytes (CD14+; 13±1 versus 21 ± 1%) compared to pre-flight and post-flight samples whereas B cells (CD19+, T-helper (CD4+, Leu-8-) and T-suppressor (CD8+, CD11b+) populations did not change. Additional phenotypic analysis of these mononuclear leucocytes from to crew members upon landing revealed a reduction in natural killer (NK) cells (CD16+ or CD56+; 9 ± 1 versus 3 ± 1%) and an increase in monocytes that were negative for insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) receptor expression. Flow cytometric analysis indicated these hormone receptor negative monocytes were smaller and less granular than receptor positive monocytes. Therefore, a novel population of monocytes may be released into the peripheral blood during the stress of space flight or upon landing. - One hundred patients undergoing pyeloplasty were studied and the outcome assessed with particular reference to the splintage technique used. A double J stent was used in 16 patients instead of a more traditional external drainage technique. The use of the double J stent for splintage of a pyeloplasty anastomosis was associated with a marked reduction in hospital stay and with fewer post-operative complications when compared with external drainage techniques. Families and surrogates sometimes use religious themes to justify their insistence on aggressive end-of-life care. Their hope that "God will work a miracle" can halt negotiations with health care professionals and lead to litigation. The possibility of "re-imagining" religious themes, to broaden their scope and present a wider vision of the Christian tradition, may offer a solution.

A 26-year-old man with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura resulting in respiratory and renal failure was treated with plasmapheresis (PP). Coexisting pulmonary infiltrates were empirically treated as pneumonia with various antibiotics, including vancomycin and tobramycin. The half-life of tobramycin was 6.93 hours. During PP the half-life of tobramycin decreased to 4.47 hours as determined by three random levels. The fraction eliminated due to PP was 35.5% and the fraction cleared by PP was 10.9%. We conclude that PP contributed significantly to the total clearance of tobramycin. The need for supplemental doses must be evaluated in each patient based on post-PP serum concentrations.

The rat brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene consists of four short 5'-exons linked to separate promoters and one 3'-exon encoding the mature BDNF protein. Using in situ hybridization we demonstrate here that kindling-induced seizures, cerebral ischaemia and insulin-induced hypoglycaemic coma increase BDNF mRNA levels through insult- and region-specific usage of three promoters within the BDNF gene. Both brief (2 min) and longer (10 min) periods of forebrain ischaemia induced significant and major increases only of exon III mRNA in the dentate gyrus. Following hypoglycaemic coma (1 and 30 min), exon III mRNA was markedly elevated in the dentate gyrus and, in addition, exon I mRNA showed a moderate increase. Single and recurrent (n = 40) hippocampal seizures significantly increased expression of exon I, II and III mRNAs in the dentate gyrus granule cells. After recurrent seizures, including generalized convulsions, there were also major increases of both exon I and III mRNAs in the CA3 region, amygdala, piriform cortex and neocortex, whereas in the hippocampal CA1 sector marked elevations were detected only for exon III mRNA. The insults had no effect on the level of exon IV mRNA in the brain. The region- and insult-specific pattern of promoter activation might be of importance for the effectiveness of protective responses as well as for the regulation of plastic changes following brain insults.

A model is described in which transient ischemia is induced in rats anaesthetized with N2O:O2 (70:30) by bilateral carotid artery clamping combined with a lowering of mean arterial blood pressure to 50 mm Hg, the latter being achieved by bleeding, or by bleeding supplemented with administration of trimetaphan or phentolamine. By the use of intubation, muscle paralysis with suxamethonium chloride, and insertion of tail arterial and venous catheters, it was possible to induce reversible ischemia for long-term recovery studies. Autoradiographic measurements of local CBF showed that the procedure reduced CBF in neocortical areas, hippocampus, and caudoputamen to near-zero values, flow rates in a number of subcortical areas being variable. Administration of trimethaphane or phentolamine did not affect ischemic and postischemic flow rates, nor did they alter recovery of EEG and sensory-evoked responses, but trimetaphan blunted the changes in plasma concentrations of adrenaline and noradrenaline. Recovery experiments showed that 10 min of ischemia gave rise to clear signs of permanent brain damage, with a small number of animals developing postischemic seizures that led to the death of the animals in status epilepticus. After 15 min of ischemia, such alterations were more pronounced, and the majority of animals died. It is concluded that the short revival times noted are explained by the fact that the model induces near-complete ischemia, and that recovery following forebrain ischemia is critically dependent on residual flow rates during the period of ischemia.
