Background: There has been increasing evidence of the association between hyperuricemia and diabetes mellitus (DM). In the general population, hyperuricemia has been associated with pre-diabetes. In DM patients, hyperuricemia has been associated with poor outcomes. Objectives: The objective was to determine the proportion of hyperuricemia and associated factors among patients with type 2 DM in Mwanza, Tanzania. Design: This was a cross-sectional study. Methods: This study was conducted from January to March 2023 among patients with type 2 DM attending clinic at Bugando Medical Centre, Mwanza. Data was obtained from a structured questionnaire. Serum uric acid, HbA1c, lipid profile, and renal functions were analyzed. Analysis was done via STATA version 17. The primary outcome was the proportion of hyperuricemia among patients with type 2 DM, and logistic regression models were used to analyze associated factors. Results: Out of 360 patients, 59.7% were female. The median age was 61 years [IQR 57-68], and the median duration of DM was 5 years [IQR 3-9]. The mean HbA1c was 8.2 ± 2.5%, with 60% of patients having poor control. Most patients had hypertension (78.9%) and were overweight or obese (81.9%). The proportion of patients with DM and hyperuricemia was 44.4%, with mean serum uric acid levels among males and females of 410 ± 137 and 385 ± 119 µmol/L, respectively. We found that being female (P =.001), overweight (P =.021), or obese (P =.007), and having chronic kidney disease (P <.001) was associated with hyperuricemia among patients with type 2 DM. Conclusion: The burden of hyperuricemia among type 2 DM patients is quite high, and it is associated with female gender, high body mass index, lipids, and chronic kidney disease. This calls for regular screening of hyperuricemia in the population, and more studies are needed to establish the outcomes associated with hyperuricemia and create a treatment guideline. Background: Despite an acute knee injury being a major risk factor for osteoarthritis, the factors that initiate and maintain this risk of longer-term knee symptoms are poorly understood. Bioactive lipids derived from omega-3 and -6 polyunsaturated fatty acids have key roles in the regulation of the inflammatory response and have been linked to joint damage and osteoarthritis pain in translational models. Hypothesis: There would be associations between systemic levels of bioactive lipids and knee symptoms longitudinally after an acute knee injury and related knee surgery. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: This study analyzed a subset of young, active adults who had sustained an acute knee injury (recruited via a surgical care pathway) and healthy age- and sex-matched controls. Surgery, if performed, was conducted after the baseline serum sample was taken and before the 3-month and 2-year visits. Liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry of 41 bioactive lipids was carried out in sera of (1) 47 injured participants (median age, 28 years) collected at baseline (median, 24 days after injury), 3 months, and 2 years, along with the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, and (2) age- and sex-matched controls. Results: Levels of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (P ≤.0001) and docosahexaenoic acid (P ≤.0001) and the pro-resolving lipid mediators 17– and 14–hydroxydocosahexaenoic acid, and 18-hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid were all significantly greater at baseline in injured participants compared with the later time points and also higher than in healthy controls (P =.0019 and P ≤.0001, respectively). Levels of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins E2 and D2, leukotriene B4, and thromboxane B2 were significantly lower at baseline compared with the later time points. Higher levels of 8,9–, 11,12–, and 14,15–dihydroxyeicosatrienoic acid (DHET) were cross-sectionally associated with more severe knee pain/symptoms according to the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score at 2 years (P =.0004, R 2 = 0.251; P =.0002, R 2 = 0.278; and P =.0012, R 2 = 0.214, respectively). Conclusion: The profile of pro-resolving versus pro-inflammatory lipids at baseline suggests an initial activation of pro-resolution pathways, followed by the later activation of pro-inflammatory pathways. Clinical Relevance: In this largely surgically managed cohort, the association of soluble epoxide hydrolase metabolites, the DHETs, with more severe knee symptoms at 2 years provides a rationale for further investigation into the role of this pathway in persisting knee symptoms in this population, including potential therapeutic strategies. Background: Acne vulgaris is a common disorder of pilosebaceous units affecting adolescents and young adults. The various causes include diet, stress, seborrhea, and premenstrual flare. Objective: The objective of this study was to compare lipid profile, insulin, and adiponectin levels in acne and controls. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients of acne from the age group of 12 to 25 years and 20 healthy age- and gender-matched controls were included in the study. Results: Patients with acne showed significantly higher levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), higher levels (although not statistically significant) of triglyceride, and very LDL and significantly lower levels of high-density lipoprotein as compared to controls. Furthermore, individuals with acne had significantly lower levels of serum adiponectin and significantly higher mean levels of fasting serum insulin as compared to controls. Conclusion: Derangements in serum lipid profile, serum insulin, and serum adiponectin levels can predispose to acne in adolescent individuals. Introduction: Several studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between severe hepatic steatosis and metabolic alterations; however, few studies have addressed the potential association between different grades of steatosis and clinical patterns in a non-diabetic population. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 223 non-diabetic individuals. The severity of steatosis was assessed using B-mode ultrasound. We analyzed lipid and glucose profiles according to the severity of hepatic steatosis. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values were also recorded to investigate the potential impact of steatosis on kidney function. Results: Patients with steatosis were found to have higher insulinemia and mean values of fasting plasma glucose compared to patients without steatosis. A significant decrease in high-density lipoprotein level was observed only in patients with severe or moderate steatosis. All grades of steatosis were associated with increased triglyceride levels, which were more significant in severe steatosis. Subgroup analysis by body mass index demonstrated a significant difference between lean patients with steatosis and lean patients without steatosis for triglycerides (p = 0.002) and high-density lipoprotein levels (p = 0.019). Finally, patients diagnosed with steatosis demonstrated a higher prevalence of estimated glomerular filtration rate < 90 ml/min. Background: The carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is uniformly regarded as a consistent noninvasive marker for subclinical atherosclerosis and is widely accepted for assessment of cardiovascular risk in high-risk individuals including diabetes. Objectives: The present study was conducted to estimate the CIMT in prediabetes, new-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and those with disease of at least 5-year duration to analyze its relationship to this common metabolic disorder and other risk factors. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional hospital-based study conducted on 75 patients, 25 in each Group A (with T2DM of more than 5-year duration), Group B (new-onset T2DM), and Group C (prediabetes). IMT was measured in common carotid artery (CCA) bilaterally using high-resolution B-mode ultrasound. Continuous variables in the three groups were evaluated by analysis of variance, and CIMT was correlated with glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and lipid profile by Pearson's correlation. Results: The mean CIMT in the right CCA was 0.67 + 0.12 mm, 0.58 + 0.07 mm, and 0.53 + 0.07 mm and in the left CCA was 0.65 + 0.10 mm, 0.58 + 0.06 mm, and 0.54 + 0.07 mm in Groups A, B, and C, respectively. A statistically significant difference was observed between Group A and Group B as well as between Group A and Group C (P < 0.05). Patients with diabetes (DM) who had disease of over 5-year duration and relatively poor control of blood glucose (high HbA1c), and dyslipidemia, had significantly higher CIMT values than those with new-onset DM as well as prediabetes. Conclusion: All the three subgroups of dysglycemic individuals had higher CIMT as compared to historical data from healthy Asian Indian population. The CIMT values increased along the temporal continuum of hyperglycemia, being the lowest in individuals with prediabetes to the highest values in DM of at least 5-year duration. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of coffee consumption rate with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, and total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio in females with vitamin D deficiency. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out by studying the records of 270 Jordanian females aged 18–65 years with varying degrees of vitamin D deficiency. Following completion of the questionnaire regarding their anthropometric characteristics and coffee consumption rate during the preceding 3 months, the participants were required to provide blood samples for analysis to measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D and lipid profile levels including non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio. Results: The current study demonstrated that coffee consumption rate and vitamin D deficiency were significantly positively connected with the total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (p =.003) in women with vitamin D deficiency. In addition, vitamin D deficiency alone correlated positively with non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and the total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (p =.010) and (p =.002), respectively. Conclusion: Higher coffee consumption rate among women with vitamin D deficiency significantly elevated total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio that may increase woman's risk of hyperlipidemia. Vitiligo is a pigmentary disorder resulting from progressive destruction of melanocytes in the skin. There is a growing body of evidence about higher risk of metabolic syndrome and dyslipidemia in some dermatoses including vitiligo. We aimed to evaluate lipid profile, leptin and C reactive protein (CRP) status among Iranian patients with vitiligo, compared with healthy controls and perused the relationship between abnormal values of these parameters with disease duration and physical characteristics of patients. 40 patients with vitiligo and 40 age-matched and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Data on weight, height, lipid profile, leptin and CRP values were recorded and compared. The mean values for nearly all study parameters (except for high-density lipoprotein) were significantly higher in patients with vitiligo, compared with healthy controls, irrespective of age and sex. We could not find any correlation between vitiligo and study parameters, regarding disease severity and extension of lesions; but in patients who have been suffering from vitiligo for more than 5 years, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and CRP values were noted to be significantly higher (p<0.001, p=0.003 and p=0.03, respectively). In conclusion, screening of patients with vitiligo in regard to their lipid profile as well as blood pressure should be considered, especially in patients with longer disease duration or those who have other cardiovascular risk factors to prevent morbidity and mortality as a result of developing cardiovascular events. This study aimed to assess the performance of waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in the prediction of metabolic syndrome and to determine the appropriate cutoff value in Thai adolescents. Demographic data, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, and lipid profile were obtained from the Thai National Health Examination Survey V database. The performances of WHtR, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), and BMI z -score were analyzed by the receiver operating characteristics. Among 2644 adolescents, metabolic syndrome was identified in 4.27%. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of WHtR, waist circumference, BMI, and BMI z -score were comparable (0.924-0.960). Performance of WHtR was more constant across age groups compared with other parameters. Using the cutoff value of WHtR at 0.5 resulted in the sensitivity and specificity of 98.5%/83.4% and 88.9%/86.0% in males and females, respectively. In conclusion, the cutoff value of WHtR at 0.5 provided good sensitivity and specificity for identifying metabolic syndrome in both genders. Aims: To explore the differences in some maternal-neonatal metabolic markers and placenta status by foetal sex. Methods: One hundred thirty-nine Caucasian pregnant women from the GESTAFIT project and their new-borns were included in the present cross-sectional study. Serum cardiometabolic markers (i.e. lipid and glycaemic profile and uric acid) were analysed at late pregnancy and at birth. In placenta, telomeres length, proportion of deleted mitochondrial-DNA and mitochondrial-DNA density, some minerals and interleukin 8, epidermal growth factor, fibroblast growth factor-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor were measured. The study was run between November 2015 and April 2018. Results: Mothers carrying a male showed higher serum triglycerides than mothers carrying a female at late pregnancy (p<.05). Serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were greater in males’ umbilical cord blood artery compared to females’ new-borns (both, p<.05). Mothers of males and male new-borns presented higher uric acid than mothers of females and female new-borns at birth (p<.05). Female’s placentas presented greater placental-newborn weight ratio, manganese content and fibroblast growth factor-2 (all, p⩽.05), and evidence of statistical significance in telomeres length, which were 17% longer (p=.076). Conclusion: Our findings show weak differences in some cardiometabolic and placental status markers by foetal sex. Notwithstanding, we observed a slightly more proatherogenic profile in both, mothers carrying males’ foetuses and male new-borns. We also found lower serum uric acid and better placenta status in mothers carrying a female. Background: Most meatpacking workers have pain affecting their back, arms, and/or wrists from work-related repetitive motions, forceful exertion, and awkward positioning. Chronic musculoskeletal pain is associated with obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. Hispanic/Latino workers in the meatpacking industry are a vulnerable population; limited English, lack of health insurance, and fear of deportation often deter them from seeking care where preventable cardiovascular risks might be detected. The purpose of this study was to examine perceived health and actual cardiovascular risk among Hispanic/Latino meatpacking workers with musculoskeletal pain in Nebraska. Methods: Structured interviews were used to examine perceived health, awareness of cardiometabolic risk, and capacity for health self-management. Body mass index (BMI), lipids, blood pressure, Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and cardiorespiratory fitness (step test) were used to examine cardiovascular risk. Findings: Of those interviewed (n = 39), musculoskeletal pain affected usual life activities in 64% (n = 25) of participants. Of those tested (n = 30), 93% (n = 28) had a BMI > 30 kg/m2, 86% (n = 26) had at least one lipid abnormality, 50% (n = 15) had blood pressure > 120/80 mm Hg, and 43% (n = 13) had an HbA1c > 5.7%. Males had greater fitness than females (p =.03), but also greater lifetime risk of heart attack or stroke compared with females (p =.02). Conclusion/Application to Practice: In this sample, cardiovascular risk exceeded that found in the general Hispanic population in the United States. Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), which is secreted by granulosa cells of late preantral and small antral follicles, is a marker of ovarian reserve. The association of ovarian reserve with subclinical atherosclerosis in women of reproductive age is currently unknown. We primary investigated whether AMH levels are associated with markers of subclinical atherosclerosis in healthy, normally menstruating women. In this cross-sectional study, vascular structure and function were assessed by measurement of carotid and femoral intima–media thickness (IMT), flow-mediated dilation, carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity and augmentation index. Lipid profile and serum AMH concentrations were also measured. Seventy premenopausal women, aged 32.7 ± 6.5 years, were included. Mean AMH levels were lower in smokers than in non-smokers and negatively associated with total cholesterol (TC) levels. An inverse association between mean AMH concentrations and femoral and carotid IMT in all segments was observed. No correlation with other markers of subclinical atherosclerosis or established cardiovascular (CV) risk factors was found. After multivariable adjustment, the association between AMH concentrations and combined carotid IMT or carotid bulb IMT remained significant. In conclusion, in healthy, normally ovulating women, AMH concentrations are negatively associated with subclinical atherosclerosis indices and TC levels, independently of established CV risk factors. Chronic inflammation coupled with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors influences the progression of atherosclerosis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and homocysteine (Hcy) are associated with the risk of CVD in the general population, but their associations with CV risk and disease activity in SLE are unclear. In this cross-sectional study (N = 139 SLE patients, mean age = 45.27 ± 13.18 years), we investigated associations between hs-CRP and Hcy levels and disease activity, damage accrual, and CVD risk in SLE. Disease activity and damage accrual were measured with the SLE Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K), the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus International Collaborating Clinics Group/American College of Rheumatology damage index (SDI), and anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies (anti-dsDNA). CVD risk factors of obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, blood lipids, and ankle–brachial index were collected. Linear regression analysis and one-way analysis of variance were used to analyze relationships of hs-CRP and Hcy with SLE activity, damage accrual, and CVD risk factors. Results: hs-CRP correlated significantly with SLEDAI-2K (p =.036), SDI (p =.00), anti-dsDNA titers (p =.034), diabetes (p =.005), and obesity (p =.027). hs-CRP and Hcy correlated with triglyceride (TG) levels (p =.032 and p <.001, respectively), TG/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol index (p =.020 and p =.001, respectively), and atherogenic index of plasma (p =.006 and p =.016, respectively). hs-CRP levels >3 mg/L correlated with SDI score (p =.012) and several CVD risk factors. Manufacturing workers comprise 8.8% of the total U.S. workforce representing a sizable population for disease prevention and health promotion by occupational health nurses within worksite wellness programs. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived health status and objective health status including existing chronic disease among rural manufacturing workers. Rural manufacturing workers (n = 114) completed a general health survey and consented to a retrospective chart review. All were participants in a direct incentive wellness program with biometric data available. The majority of participants were males between the ages of 46 and 60 years, and nearly half of the sample had a college degree. A statistically significant difference was observed between number of chronic diseases and lower perceived health status. These findings have implications for occupational health nurses and other health care providers to identify workers at risk for chronic illness through self-perceived health status assessment. The process of ovarian aging is influenced by a complex and poorly understood interplay of endocrine, metabolic, and environmental factors. The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of using latent class analysis to identify subgroups based on cardiometabolic, psychological, and reproductive parameters of health and to describe patterns of anti-Müllerian hormone levels, a biomarker of the ovarian reserve, within these subgroups. Sixty-nine lean (body mass index [BMI] ⩽ 25 kg/m2) and severely obese (BMI ⩾ 40 kg/m2) postpartum women in Edinburgh, Scotland, were included in this exploratory study. The best fitting model included three classes: Class 1, n = 23 (33.5%); Class 2, n = 30 (42.2%); Class 3, n = 16 (24.3%). Postpartum women with lower ovarian reserve had less favorable cardiometabolic and psychological profiles. Examining the ovarian reserve within distinct subgroups based on parameters of health that affect ovarian aging may facilitate risk stratification in the context of ovarian aging. Purpose: Limited research has evaluated the independent and additive associations of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sedentary behavior (SB), and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) with metabolic syndrome, which was the purpose of this study.Design: Cross-sectional.Setting: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003 to 2004.Sample: Three hundred seven adults aged 20 to 49 years.Measures: Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and SB were assessed via accelerometer, whereas CRF was assessed via submaximal treadmill testing. Metabolic syndrome was assessed via the American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidelines.Analysis: Multivariable logistic regression.Results: A 10 min/d increase in MVPA was associated with a 45% reduced odds of metabolic syndrome (odds ratio [OR] = 0.55, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.40-0.76, P = .001), and a 10 mL/kg/min increase in CRF was associated with a 43% reduced odds of having metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.57, 95% CI = 0.37-0.87, P = .013). Additionally, a statistically significant combined association of MVPA, SB, and CRF with metabolic syndrome was present; individuals who had below-median SB and above-median MVPA and CRF had an 88% reduced odds of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.03-0.48, P = .005) when compared to those who had below-median MVPA and CRF and above-median SB.Conclusion: When considering MVPA, SB, and CRF, MVPA and CRF were both independently associated with metabolic syndrome (SB was not) among this young adult population and there was also evidence to support a combined association of all 3 parameters on metabolic syndrome. Renal transplant dysfunction has been shown to be independent predictor for premature cardiovascular disease and mortality. Renalase, a flavoprotein secreted by several tissues, including the kidney, has been found to regulate sympathetic tone and blood pressure. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to explore relationships among parameters of endothelial dysfunction, lipids, glomerular filtration rate, and renalase in 2 groups: renal transplant patients with controlled hypertension and healthy volunteers.~Background~Background~In the parent study, 73 renal transplant recipients and 32 age- and gender-matched controls were enrolled. A fasting sample for endothelial, lipid, and renalase values, along with other clinical parameters, was obtained.~Methods~Methods~We found statistically significant inverse correlation between renalase and estimated glomerular filtration rate ( r = -0.552, P < .001), positive correlation between renalase and creatinine ( r = 0.364, P = .003), total cholesterol ( r = 0.578, P < .001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ( r = 0.261, P = .046), and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ( r = 0.327, P = .01). Renalase inversely correlated with hemoglobin ( r = -0.232, P = .032) and positively with white blood cells ( r = 0.233, P = .032). There was a significant difference in plasma renalase with regard to chronic kidney disease stages ( F = 13.346, P < .001) but did not correlate with C-reactive protein. Renalase did not correlate with any of parameters of endothelial dysfunction, C-reactive protein, neither with some demographic data (gender, age, time or type of transplantation, risk factors). According to Ayurveda, the traditional system of healthcare of Indian origin, Agni is the factor responsible for digestion and metabolism. Four functional states (Agnibala) of Agni have been recognized: regular, irregular, intense, and weak. The objective of the present study was to develop and validate a self-assessment tool to estimate Agnibala. The developed tool was evaluated for its reliability and validity by administering it to 300 healthy volunteers of either gender belonging to 18 to 40-year age group. Besides confirming the statistical validity and reliability, the practical utility of the newly developed tool was also evaluated by recording serum lipid parameters of all the volunteers. The results show that the lipid parameters vary significantly according to the status of Agni. Objectives: Research has identified many factors associated with fibromyalgia (FM), but findings have been inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate changes in levels of nitric oxide (NO), inflammatory markers, lipid profile, and cortisol in normaland overweight patients with FM and controls. Since most patients with FM are overweight, we explored possible changes in these markers according to body mass index (BMI). Methods: This preliminary study was performed on serum samples of women with FM and age-matched controls, grouped according to their BMI: 12 normal-weight patients and 12 controls and 13 overweight patients and 8 controls. Ozone-based chemiluminescence assay was used to measure NO. Inflammatory mediators and cortisol were determined by immunoassay. Lipid profile was measured by a spectrophotometric procedure. Functional capacity was assessed by the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ). Results: Normal-weight patients showed higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and apolipoprotein B compared to controls (both p < .05). CRP, apolipoprotein B, and triglycerides were higher in overweight patients versus overweight controls (all p < .05) and in overweight versus normal-weight patients (CRP p < .01; apolipoprotein B, triglycerides p < .05). The other markers were unaffected. Apolipoprotein B (r = .762; p < .05) and NO (r = -.921; p < .05) levels correlated with FIQ score in normal-weight patients. CRP level correlated with FIQ (r = .912; p < .05) in overweight patients. Conclusions: CRP and apolipoprotein B, biomarkers linked to cardiovascular events, may be associated with FM-related dysfunction in normal- and overweight women with FM. The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by constellation of clinical and biochemical features that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a neurotransmitter and enhances the development of obesity and other aspects of MetS. We determined the association between NPY Leu7Pro polymorphism and features of MetS in Iranian patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). A total of 550 patients with CAD including individuals with (n = 184) and without MetS (n = 366) were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism. A significantly higher frequency of the Leu7Pro polymorphism was found in patients with MetS compared with the non-MetS patients (P = .001). Furthermore, there was a significant difference in Pro7 frequency between diabetics versus nondiabetics (P = .005), dyslipidemic versus nondyslipidemic (P = .04), and obese versus nonobese (P = .001) in this population. Background: Migraine with aura has been associated with increased prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, including elevated levels of some vascular biomarkers. However, little research has been done on this association among the elderly. We examined the associations of lipid levels with headache and migraine in a cohort of elderly individuals.Methods: Cross-sectional study among 1155 participants enrolled in the Epidemiology of Vascular Ageing Study with available information on headache and blood biomarkers. We used multinomial logistic regression to evaluate the association between biomarker tertiles and headache categories.Results: 925 people had no severe headache, 64 people had non-migraine headache and 166 people had migraine, of whom 23 had aura. Compared with participants without headache, we observed strong associations between increasing tertiles of total cholesterol and migraine with aura. The odds ratio (95% confidence interval) was 4.67 (0.99–21.97) for the 2nd tertile and 5.97 (1.29–27.61) for the 3rd tertile. We also found strong associations between triglycerides and migraine with aura (odds ratio for 3rd tertile: 4.42 (1.32–14.77)). We did not see significant associations between increased biomarker levels and any other headache group.Conclusions: Elevated levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides are associated with migraine with aura but not other headache forms in the elderly. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) associates with excess cardiovascular risk and there is a need to assess that risk. However, individual lipid levels may be influenced by disease activity and drug use, whereas lipid ratios may be more robust. A cross-sectional cohort of 400 consecutive patients was used to establish factors that influenced individual lipid levels and lipid ratios in RA, using multiple regression models. A further longitudinal cohort of 550 patients with RA was used to confirm these findings, using generalized estimating equations. Cross-sectionally, higher C-reactive protein (CRP) levels correlated with lower levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ([HDL-C] P ≤ .015), whereas lipid ratios did not correlate with CRP. The findings were broadly replicated in the longitudinal data. In summary, the effects of inflammation on individual lipid levels may underestimate lipid-associated cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in RA, thus lipid ratios may be more appropriate for CVD risk stratification in RA. Low-density lipoprotein is recognized as a primary vascular risk factor. However, recent data favor apolipoprotein (apo)B and apoA-I as risk factors with higher predictive values than conventional lipids. We investigated how leisure-time physical activity relates to the serum apoB/apoA-I ratio in middle-aged men. The results showed that compared with a sedentary lifestyle, moderate physical activity was associated with a decreased apoB/apoA-I ratio (1.01 ± 0.28 vs 0.87 ± 0.24, P < .05) and increased apoA-I levels (1.30 ± 0.20 g/L vs 1.43 ± 0.22 g/L, P < .05), whereas vigorous activity was required to observe a reduction in apoB levels (1.27 ± 0.28 g/L vs 1.14 ± 0.24 g/L, P < .05). A covariate analysis showed that leisure time physical activity was also associated with reduced apoB/apoA-I ratios after adjustment for smoking, systolic blood pressure and waist circumference. Background We conducted a cross-sectional analysis in a population-based cohort to compare the strength of the associations among various lipid parameters and the presence of atherosclerotic plaque in the proximal thoracic aorta. Methods As part of Aortic Plaques and Risk of Ischemic Stroke (APRIS) study, 464 subjects were studied (mean age 69·1 ± 9·0, 251 males and 213 females), including 255 patients with first ischaemic stroke and 209 stroke-free controls. Presence and thickness of atherosclerotic plaque were assessed by transoesophageal echocardiography. Measured lipid parameters included total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, lipoprotein (a), apolipoprotein (Apo) B and A-I levels with their ratio. Results Overall, atherosclerotic plaque was detected in 326 subjects (70·4%) and 37·6% of these subjects ( n=174) had atherosclerotic plaque ≥4 mm. After adjusting for other significant predictors of atherosclerosis, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level and Apo B/A-I ratio emerged as the strongest predictors of any atherosclerotic plaque ( P<0·001 and P=0·004, respectively), followed by individual Apo B ( P=0·015) and A-I ( P=0·016) levels, triglycerides ( P=0·027) and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level ( P=0·021). Total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were not significant predictors for any atherosclerotic plaque ( P=0·273 and P=0·081, respectively). High-density lipoprotein cholesterol level ( P=0·008) and Apo A-I ( P=0·006) were also significant predictors of atherosclerotic plaque ≥4 mm. Similar trends were observed after exclusion of subjects on cholesterol lowering drugs. Conclusion High-density lipoprotein cholesterol level and Apo B/A-I ratio, but not total or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, were strongly associated with degree of proximal aortic atherosclerosis. This study aimed to investigate the associations between peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) gene Gly482Ser polymorphism (rs8192678) and parameters of insulin resistance in a sample of Korean children. A total of 286 children aged 10 to 12 years old were recruited from local elementary schools. Measured variables included body fat, blood pressures, blood lipids, glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and accelerometer-based physical activity (PA). Significant differences in percentage body fat (P = .016), insulin (P = .013), and HOMA-IR (P = .007) were found according to Gly482Ser genotype, with no significant genotype differences in the other measured variables. The genotype-specific differences in insulin (P = .136) and HOMA-IR (P = .067) were significantly attenuated when adjusted for age, sex, Tanner stage, body fat, and PA. The findings of the study suggest that the genetic effects of the PGC-1α genotypes on parameters of insulin resistance might be modulated by lifestyle factors, including PA and body fatness.
