This study investigates the potential use of Yellow River sand (YRS) sourced from the lower reaches of the Yellow River in China as a sustainable and cost-effective substitute for quartz sand in Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC). With an annual accumulation of approximately 400 million tons in this region, YRS presents a substantial resource. ECC specimens with 100% YRS replacement with quartz sand were subjected to various curing methods: natural, steam, standard, and sprinkler. Extensive mechanical testing including flexural, compressive, uniaxial tensile, and four-point flexural tests was conducted. Additionally, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) analyses investigated microscopic mechanisms influencing macroscopic mechanical properties. Finally, the mechanical properties of the YRS-ECC test block after 14 days of standard curing and the traditional sand ECC test block were compared and analyzed. The results indicate that ECC specimens with 100% YRS substitution under natural curing show an optimal ultimate tensile strain of more than 4%, providing the best resistance to the reduction in ultimate flexural load and deflection due to aging. Steam curing enhances flexural and compressive strength, achieving an ultimate flexural load of 5 kN and a maximum deflection of 4.42 mm at 90 days. SEM analysis revealed lower C-S-H gel density under natural curing and higher under steam curing, enhancing fiber pull-out in steam-cured specimens. The MIP tests demonstrated that natural curing had the highest porosity (32.86%) and average pore size (51.69 nm), whereas steam curing resulted in the smallest average pore size, with 44% of pores under 50 nm. Compared with traditional sand, it is found that the ultimate bending load and deflection of YRS-ECC are 5.7% and 9.4% higher than those of traditional sand ECC, respectively, and its ultimate tensile strength and strain are also improved. These findings highlight YRS as a sustainable alternative to natural sand in ECC, with natural curing proving the most effective for superior mechanical performance, including tensile strain, crack resistance, and durability. Before artificial ageing, extruded aluminium profiles are subjected to stretching with a small cold deformation in the range of 0.5–2%. This deformation improves the geometrical stability of the extruded product and causes changes in the microstructure of the profile, which leads to the strain hardening of the material after artificial ageing. The work has resulted in the creation of the prototype of an original device, which is unique in the world, for the dynamic stretching of the extruded profiles after quenching. The semi-industrial unit is equipped with a hydraulic system for stretching and a pneumatic system for cold dynamic deformation. The aim of this research paper is to produce advantageous microstructural changes and increase the strength properties of the extruded material. The solution of the dynamic stretching of the profiles after extrusion is a great challenge and an innovation not yet practised. The paper presents the results of microstructural and mechanical investigations carried out on extruded AlMgSi(Cu) alloys quenched on the run-out table of the press, dynamically stretched under different conditions, and artificially aged for T5 temper. Different stretching conditions were applied: a static deformation of 0.5% at a speed of 0.02 m/s, and dynamic deformation of 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% at speeds of 0.05 and 2 m/s. After the thermomechanical treatment of the profiles, microstructural observations were carried out using an optical microscope (OM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A tensile test was also carried out on the specimens stretched under different conditions. In all the cases, the dynamically stretched profiles showed higher strength properties, especially those deformed at a higher speed of 2 m/s, where the increase in UTS was observed in the range of 7–18% compared to the classical (static) stretching. Geopolymers, as a novel cementitious material, exhibit typical brittle failure characteristics under stress. To mitigate this brittleness, fibers can be incorporated to enhance toughness. This study investigates the effects of varying polypropylene fiber (PPF) content and fiber length on the flowability, mechanical properties, and flexural toughness of coal gangue-based geopolymers. Microstructural changes and porosity variations within the Fiber-Reinforced Geopolymer Mortar(GMPF) matrix were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Low field NMR(LF-NMR) to elucidate the toughening mechanism of PPF-reinforced geopolymers. The introduction of fibers into the geopolymer matrix demonstrated an initial bridging effect in the viscous geopolymer slurry, with a 3.0 vol% fiber content reducing fluidity by 5.6%. Early mechanical properties of GMPF were enhanced with fiber addition; at 1.5 vol% fiber content and 15 mm length, the 3-day flexural and compressive strengths increased by 30.81% and 17.4%, respectively. Furthermore, polypropylene fibers significantly improved the matrix's flexural toughness, which showed an increasing trend with higher fiber content. At a 3.0 vol% fiber content, the flexural toughness index increased by 198.35%. The data indicated that a fiber length of 12 mm yielded the best toughening effect, with an 84.03% increase in the flexural toughness index. SEM observations revealed a strong interfacial bond between fibers and the matrix, with noticeable damage on the fiber surface due to frictional forces, and fiber pull-out being the predominant failure mode. Porosity testing results indicated that fiber incorporation substantially improved the internal pore structure of the matrix, reducing the median pore diameter of mesopores and converting mesopores to micropores. This paper presents research results on biocomposites made from a combination of extruded apple pomace (EAP) and potato starch (SP). The aim of this work was to investigate the basic properties of biocomposites obtained from extruded apple pomace reinforced with potato starch. The products were manufactured by hot pressing using a hydraulic press with a mould for producing samples. The prepared biocomposites were subjected to strength tests, surface wettability was determined, and a colour analysis was carried out. A thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and cross-sectioning observed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were also performed. The obtained test results showed that the combination of apple pomace (EAP) and starch (SP) enabled the production of compact biocomposite materials. At the same time, it was found that each increase in the share of starch in the mixture for producing biocomposites increased the strength parameters of the obtained materials. With the highest share of starch in the mixture, 40%, and a raw material moisture content of 14%, the material had the best strength parameters and was even characterised by hydrophobic properties. It was also found that materials with a high content of starch are characterised by increased temperature resistance. The analysis of SEM microscopic photos showed well-glued particles of apple pomace, pectin, and gelatinised starch and a smooth external structure of the samples. Research and analyses have shown that apple pomace reinforced only with the addition of starch can be a promising raw material for the production of simple, biodegradable biocomposite materials. In this study, the authors performed a strength analysis of seven groups of commercially available materials based on SLS incremental technology. Test samples were made with Original PRUSA SL1S printers, with 10 samples of each type from 7 resins selected for testing. The tests were carried out on an MTS Bionix machine in a static tensile test, during which the basic mechanical properties were determined. This is also a preliminary study to determine material constants in the Johnson-Cook strength model. The authors then performed numerical simulations to mirror the experimental tests in order to tune the rheological model. In addition, a fracture criterion was determined based on a hybrid FEM/SPH numerical method. This allowed for the expansion of material libraries currently used in numerical simulations, as well as the sensitivity of the materials' models. In subsequent studies, in order to determine the nature of material destruction, analysis of fracture surfaces was performed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The final study was a biocompatibility test to assess the biological properties of the material. The conducted research made it possible to determine the strength properties of resins currently used in 3D printers, expand the libraries of material models in the computational environment (with an error rate of less than 5%), as well as observe the nature of the cracks formed and biocompatibility in the context of predicting the use of these materials for biomedical applications. The rapid growth of Natural Fiber Laminate (NFL) innovation is a direct response to environmental challenges, positioning these materials as superior alternatives to synthetic fiber composites. This paper delved into the outcomes of an extensive experimental study investigating the influence of sisal fiber (SLF), banana fiber (BF), and glass fiber (GF) on the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of concrete. The water absorption curves were established for sisal fiber concrete (SLFC), banana fiber concrete (BFC), and glass fiber concrete (GFC). Furthermore, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observations were conducted to perform microanalysis and failure analysis of the tested specimens. The results revealed significant improvements in the concrete containing fibers compared to its counterpart in fiber-free concrete. For mixtures with a water-to-binder (W/B) ratio of 0.3, the most optimal mix (GF-30-135) showed improvements in compressive strength, flexural strength, and splitting tensile strengths by 4.13%, 8.93%, and 10.10%, respectively. On the other hand, for W/B of 0.4, mix GF-30-135 showed improvements of 5.05%, 8.55%, and 11.60%, respectively. Furthermore, as the fiber content increased, microscopic analyses revealed a weakening of the bond between the fibers and the rest of the matrix, contributing to the deterioration of the mechanical properties. In recent times, with rapid development in the construction sector, the use of enormous amounts of materials is required for the production of concrete. Fire penetrates concrete, leading to chemical contamination, small cracks, and lightening. These effects can significantly change the properties of concrete's structure, reduce its strength and durability, and also change the behavior of the structure and lead to effects on the environment. An attempt was made to study the effects of elevated temperature on the mechanical characteristics of self-compacting concrete (SCC) with by-products including fly ash as a partial replacement for cement and waste copper slag as a partial replacement for fine aggregate at 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 70%. The SCC specimens were subjected to elevated temperatures ranging from 200, 400, 600, and 800 °C, respectively, for a steady-state of two hours in a digital muffle furnace. The residual compressive strength, mass loss, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and residual density along with a visual inspection of cracks and color changes were observed. In this study, with over 400 °C temperatures, surface fractures appeared. The residual compressive strength (R-CMS) of all the individual temperatures of the SCC-WCS% mixes exhibited a gain in strength range from 31 to 34 MPa at 400 °C, 26 to 35 MPa at 600 °C, and 22.5 MPa to 33.5 MPa at 800 °C, respectively. This paper examines the lithology, pore throat, and fluid characteristics of the reservoir in Liaohe Oilfield Block 3624, using group V rocks as an example, combining a high-temperature and high-pressure reaction still with other equipment such as a rock mechanics tester and a scanning electron microscope. This study also designs and develops three controlled variable experiments, including the subcritical steam reservoir rock dissolution experiment, the subcritical steam reservoir rock mineral composition transformation experiment, and the subcritical steam reservoir rock mineral mechanical property experiment, also making clear the rule of change on the part of the rocks in the deep and heavy oil reservoirs after the injection of subcritical steam. Experimental results reveal the following: (1) Steam causes the dissolution of rocks, and when the steam temperature is in the subcritical region, dissolution is visible. After a 350 °C subcritical steam treatment, the relative melting temperatures of the components of rock materials are substantially greater than the melting point of the cement holding them together, causing the cement to significantly dissolve and a secondary crack network to emerge. (2) The mineral composition of the rocks changes as a result of elevated temperatures, with various mineral transformation trajectories being recorded after various steam treatments. Montmorillonite in reservoir rocks is converted into minerals like illite and chlorite in the subcritical steam temperature range. Another element influencing the creation of secondary cracks on rock surfaces is the reciprocal transformation of minerals, which alters the cohesiveness among mineral components. (3) Rocks suffer thermal damage and changes to their mechanical characteristics as a result of high-temperature steam dissolution and mineral transformations; the severity of these changes increases with the steam temperature. In order to overcome the limitations of traditional pervious concrete, which is difficult to balance in terms of both mechanical properties and permeability, this study proposed a novel and effective approach to improve the performances of pervious concrete (PC) based on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and basalt fibers (BF). The mechanical properties and permeability tests of PC with single-doped or double-doped h-BN and BF were conducted first. Then the influence laws of h-BN and BF content on the compressive strength, flexural strength, porosity, and permeability coefficient for PC were revealed. Finally, the micro-mechanism effects of h-BN and BF on the performances of PC were explored by using a scanning electron microscope and an energy dispersive spectrometer. The results showed that the compressive strength of PC was increased with the increase in the h-BN content, and the flexural strength, porosity, and permeability coefficient increased first and then decreased. Meanwhile, with the increase in the BF content, the compressive strength and flexural strength of PC increased first and then decreased. Moreover, the compressive strength, flexural strength, porosity, and permeability coefficient of the proposed pervious concrete were 22.8 MPa, 5.17 MPa, 18.5%, and 5.09 mm/s, respectively, which were increases of 21.9%, 19.7%, 60.9%, and 42.2%, respectively, compared with ordinary permeable concrete when the optimal admixture combination was 15% fly ash, 0.08% h-BN, and 2.25% BF. This study can avoid the limitations of traditional pervious concrete and provide an efficient alternative way for improving the mechanical and permeability properties of pervious concrete. CrWN/MoN nano-multilayer coatings were deposited in pure N2 by multi-arc ion plating using CrW and Mo targets, with the cathode co-controlled by a permanent magnet combined with an electromagnet. The effects of the thickness modulation period on the microstructure and mechanical and tribological performance were systematically analyzed by grazing-incident X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Nanoindentation, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and profilometry using a Talysurf profilometer. The local coherent interfaces and nanoscale modulation period were confirmed by TEM, while the coatings were confirmed to be composed of fcc-CrWN and hexagonal δ-MoN by GIXRD. With the increase in the modulation period, the hardness of the CrWN/MoN nano-multilayer coatings decreased, and the values of the H/E ratio and friction coefficient showed the same variation trend. At an 8.0 nm modulation period, the CrWN/MoN nano-multilayer coating showed the maximum hardness (30.2 GPa), the lowest H/E value (0.082) and an H3/E*2 value of 0.16. With the decrease in the modulation period, the average friction coefficient of the CrWN/MoN nano-multilayer coatings gradually decreased from 0.45 to 0.29, while the wear rate decreased from 4.2 × 10−7 mm3/Nm to 3.3 × 10−7 mm3/Nm. This paper investigates making an injection mouldable conductive plastic formulation that aims for conductivity into the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding range, with good mechanical properties (i.e., stiffness, strength, and impact resistance). While conductivity in the range (electrostatic charge dissipation) and EMI shielding have been attained by incorporating conductive fillers such as carbon black, metals powders, and new materials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), this often occurs with a drop in tensile strength, elongation-to-break resistance, and impact resistance. It is most often the case that the incorporation of high modulus fillers leads to an increase in modulus but a drop in strength and impact resistance. In this work, we have used short carbon fibres as the conductive filler and selected a 50/50 PBT/rPET (recycled PET) for the plastic matrix. Carbon fibres are cheaper than CNTs and graphenes. The PBT/rPET has low melt viscosity and crystallises sufficiently fast during injection moulding. To improve impact resistance, a styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene (SEBS) rubber toughening agent was added to the plastic. The PBT/rPET had very low-impact resistance and the SEBS provided rubber toughening to it; however, the rubber caused a drop in the tensile modulus and strength. The short carbon fibre restored the modulus and strength, which reached higher value than the PBT/rPET while providing the conductivity. Scanning electron microscope pictures showed quite good bonding of the current filler (CF) to the PBT/rPET. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is the leading high-performance thermoplastic biomaterial that can be processed through material extrusion (ME) additive manufacturing (AM), also known as three-dimensional (3D) printing, for patient-specific load-bearing implant manufacture. Considering the importance of cyclic loading for load-bearing implant design, this work addresses the high-cycle fatigue behaviour of 3D-printed PEEK. In this work, printed PEEK specimens are cyclically loaded under stress-controlled tension–tension using different stress levels between 75% and 95% of printed PEEK's tensile strength. The experimental results are used to document 3D-printed PEEK's fatigue behaviour using Basquin's power law, which was compared with previous fatigue research on bulk PEEK and other 3D-printing materials. As a pioneering study on its fatigue behaviour, the results from this work show that 3D-printed PEEK exhibits an above-average fatigue strength of 65 MPa, corresponding to about 75% of its tensile strength. Fracture surface analysis suggests that a transition can occur from ductile to brittle fracture with maximum stresses between 85% and 95% of the tensile strength. Evidence of crack propagation features on fracture surfaces under scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation suggests crack initiation in void defects created by printing deposition that propagates longitudinally through line bonding interfaces along layers. Considering this, 3D-printed PEEK's fatigue behaviour can be strongly related to printing conditions. Further research on the fatigue behaviour of 3D-printed PEEK is necessary to support its use in load-bearing implant applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Silty soil performs poorly when used in roads. Cement is generally used as a stabilizer to treat silty soil and enable it to meet the requirements for roadbed filling. However, cement is an environmentally unfriendly material and can cost much. Meanwhile, solid wastes of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), fly ash (FA), and flue gas desulfurized (FGD) gypsum are produced in large quantities annually. Therefore, stabilizer A (cement:ground GBFS:fly ash:FGD gypsum = 30:44:15:11) and stabilizer B (cement:ground GBFS:fly ash:FGD gypsum = 40:38:13:9) were investigated in this study by reducing the cement content in the stabilizer and improving the utilization rate of solid wastes. The compressive strength development, California bearing ratio (CBR), temperature shrinkage, mineral composition, and micro-morphology of the stabilized silty soil were measured. The main findings are as follows: firstly, the addition of solid wastes can mitigate the adverse effect of delay time on compressive strength development. Secondly, the proposed stabilizers can significantly improve the CBR, which can reach 60% with a 4% dosage. Additionally, Stabilizer B is believed to improve the resistance to temperature shrinkage, and a higher stabilizer dosage can reduce the rate of decrease in water stability coefficient. Both X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscope observations show that the main hydration products that contribute to the stabilization are C-S-H and ettringite. High-strength metastable β titanium alloys are promising structural materials to be used in aviation industries. In order to achieve a high strength level, solid solution treatment within β region and subsequent low-temperature aging are usually necessary to obtain fine α precipitates. The selection of the aging temperature is considered critical to the mechanical performance of metastable β titanium alloys. In this work, we investigated the effect of aging temperature on the microscopic structure and mechanical properties of a novel type of titanium alloy TB18 (Ti-4.5Al-5Mo-5V-6Cr-1Nb). A series of aging treatments were conducted on TB18 specimens at 510 °C, 520 °C, 530 °C, and 540 °C after the solid solution treatment at 870 °C. On the basis of the systematic results of scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope, the behavior of the α phases affected by the varied aging temperatures were studied. As the aging temperature rose, the grain width of the α phase increased from 60 nm (510 °C) to 140 nm (540 °C). For the TB18 samples aged at 510 °C and 540 °C, the tensile strength/yield strength/impact toughness values were 1365 ± 3 MPa/1260 ± 0.9 MPa/26.5 ± 1.2 J/cm2 and 1240 ± 0.9 MPa/1138 ± 0.8 MPa/36.2 ± 1.3 J/cm2, respectively. As a result, the tensile performance and the grain width of the α phase agreed well with the Hall–Petch relationship. The most modern technique utilized to create intricate manufactured parts for a variety of applications is called additive manufacturing (AM). Fused deposition modeling (FDM) has been acknowledged as the greatest consideration in the development and industrial sectors. The main objective of this study was to investigate how printing factors affected the mechanical characteristics of printed samples. Samples were produced via an FDM 3D printer in compliance with an ASTM D638 using a variety of input settings, including orientation, layer thickness, speed, and infill pattern. Tensile tests and morphological analysis using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were done on the printed samples. The results of this study demonstrate that factors including layer thickness, printing speed, and orientation significantly affect the tensile strength of the ABS-printed samples. The 45° orientations, 0.3 mm thickness, and normal speed had a significant impact on the tensile strength of the ABS-printed samples. On the other hand, samples with a 90° orientation, 0.4 mm thickness, and fast speed show better elongation performance than other samples, according to Young's modulus results. The SEM results for microscopic analysis show that samples S2 (loose infill, 45° orientation, 0.3 mm thickness, and normal speed), S5 (solid infill, 45° orientation, 0.3 mm thickness, and normal speed), and S8 (hollow infill, 45° orientation, 0.3 mm thickness, and normal speed) had a highly packed structure and robust. Discovering the parameter settings that could lead to greater mechanical and physical characteristics would undoubtedly assist designers and manufacturers worldwide as the FDM 3D printer becomes more and more crucial in manufacturing engineering parts. Banyan aerial root (BAR) powder was prepared from the aerial roots of a Banyan tree to modify epoxy resin using a magnetic stirrer. The modification was performed at different proportions of BAR powder, namely, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, by weight. Composites were fabricated with modified and unmodified resins using a combination of hand lay-up and compression molding processes to evaluate the influence of BAR powders on their mechanical properties. The test results showed that BAR powder incorporation had a positive influence on the mechanical properties of the composites, as an increase in tensile, flexural, and impact strengths was observed, with the highest tensile and flexural properties of 407.81 MPa and 339 MPa, respectively, seen in composites with 4% BAR and the highest impact strength 194.02 kJ/m2 observed in the specimen with 6% BAR powder. Though the properties saw a dipping trend at higher weight proportions of the particulate, they were still significantly higher than the properties of laminates prepared with unmodified resin. Gravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) on BAR powders confirmed cellulose to be the major constituent, followed by lignin and hemicellulose. Due to environmental concerns, there is an increasing need to reduce the use of synthetic and non-renewable packaging materials to reduce waste and increase sustainability. This study aimed to characterise sodium alginate edible-based films (SA) incorporated with laurel leaf extract (LLE) and olive leaf extract (OLE) obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction. Determination of total phenolic content, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity was performed for the extracts and films. Also, thickness, tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, opacity and colour, moisture content, water vapour permeability (WVP), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra, and surface morphology by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses were performed for the films. LLE yielded better results in terms of phenolic content (195 mg GAE/g), antioxidant (2.1 TE/g extract) and antimicrobial activity (MIC at 1% for Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus, and 1.8% for Enterococcus faecalis). For the films, the simultaneous incorporation of LLE 1% (w/v) and OLE 1% (w/v) resulted in a significant reduction of approximately 2 log CFU/g against S. aureus. The addition of LLE and OLE extracts also proved to improve barrier properties (lower WVP for SA films with LLE 1% + OLE 1%, 3.49 × 10−11 g m−1 s−1 Pa−1) and promoted changes in resistance and flexibility. In this paper, TiN-Ni nanostructured composite films with different Ni contents are prepared using the magnetron sputtering method. The composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of composite films are analyzed using an X-ray energy spectrometer (EDS), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction technology (XRD), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and nanoindentation. All the films grow in a columnar crystal structure. There are only TiN diffraction peaks in the XRD spectrum, and no diffraction peaks of Ni and its compounds are observed. The addition of the Ni element disrupts the integrity of TiN lattice growth, resulting in a decrease in the grain size from 60 nm in TiN to 25 nm at 20.6% Ni. The film with a Ni content of 12.4 at.% forms a nanocomposite structure in which the nanocrystalline TiN phase (nc-TiN) is surrounded by the amorphous Ni (a-Ni) phase. The formation of nc-TiN/a-Ni nanocomposite structures relies on the good wettability of Ni on TiN ceramics. The hardness and elastic modulus of the film gradually decrease with the increase in Ni content, but the toughness is improved. The hardness and elastic modulus decrease from 19.9 GPa and 239.5 GPa for TiN film to 15.4 GPa and 223 GPa at 20.6 at.% Ni film, respectively, while the fracture toughness increases from 1.5 MPa·m1/2 to 2.0 MPa·m1/2. The soft and ductile Ni phase enriched at the TiN grain boundaries hinders the propagation of cracks in the TiN phase, resulting in a significant increase in the film's toughness. The research results of this paper provide support for the design of TiN-Ni films with high strength and toughness and the understanding of the formation mechanism of nanocomposite structures. Previous research has reported on hidden damage within the dentin introduced by cryopreservation, but the effect on the mechanical properties of the hard tissues at tooth level remains unclear. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of cryopreservation on the mechanical properties of teeth. A matched sample of 234 premolars of 117 children (9 ≤ age ≤ 16 years), bilaterally extracted for orthodontic reasons, were included. For each child, one tooth was randomly allocated to the cryopreservation group and the contralateral tooth was assigned to the control group. Static compression tests were performed to determine load to failure, stiffness, and toughness. In a subgroup of 20 teeth, a cyclic preloading or chewing simulation was performed. Additionally, the fracture mode was determined, and the microstructure of the fractured surfaces was examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Linear mixed model analyses could not detect a statistical difference in the mean load to failure (p = 0.549), mean toughness (p = 0.968), or mean stiffness (p = 0.150) between cryopreserved and non-cryopreserved teeth. No significant difference in load to failure after cyclic preloading was detected between groups (p = 0.734). SEM analysis revealed comparable fracture characteristics between groups. It is concluded that cryopreservation does not affect the mean load to failure, stiffness, or toughness of teeth, indicating that hidden damage in the dentin is not critical at tooth level. Polylactic acid (PLA) has been widely used in many fields because of its good biodegradability, biocompatibility, and renewability. This work studied the degradation behavior and mechanical properties of cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/PLA composites. In vitro degradation experiments of 3D-printed samples were conducted at elevated temperatures, and the degradation characteristics were evaluated by mechanical tests, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicated that the addition of CNF (0.5 wt%) accelerated the degradation rate of PLA. The decreases in number average molecular weight ( M n ) and weight average molecular weight  (M w)  of composites were 7.96% and 4.91% higher than that of neat PLA, respectively. Furthermore, the tensile modulus of composites was 18.4% higher than that of neat PLA, while the strength was 7.4% lower due to poor interfacial bonding between CNF and PLA. A mapping relationship between accelerated and normal degradation showed that the degradation experienced during 60 days at 37 °C was equivalent to that undergone during 14 days at 50 °C; this was achieved by examining the alteration in  M n . Moreover, the degradation process caused a notable deformation in the samples due to residual stress generated during the 3D printing process. Leucaena is a fast-growing tree in the legume family. Its leaf contains a significant amount of protein and is thus widely used as fodder for cattle. To broaden its application in the rubber field, the effects of Leucaena leaf powder and its extracted products on the cure characteristics and mechanical properties of natural rubber were investigated. The extraction of Leucaena leaf was carried out by using a proteolytic enzyme at 60 °C. The digested protein was separated from the residue by centrifugation. Both digested protein and residue were then dried and ground into powder, namely digested protein powder and residual powder, respectively, before being characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, particle size determination, and protein analysis. After being added to natural rubber at 3 parts per hundred rubber, they significantly reduced both the scorch time and the optimum cure time of the rubber compounds, probably due to the presence of nitrogen-containing substances, without a significant sacrifice of the mechanical properties. For instance, the optimum cure time decreased by approximately 25.5, 35.4, and 54.9% for Leucaena leaf powder, residual powder, and digested protein powder, respectively. In the aircraft industry, the high-strength aluminum alloys AA7075 and AA2024 are extensively used for the manufacture of structural parts like stringers and skins, respectively. Additive manufacturing (AM) of the AA7075-T6 aluminum alloy via friction stir deposition to build continuously multilayered parts on a substrate of AA2024-T4 aluminum has not been attempted so far. Accordingly, the present work aimed to explore the applicability of building multilayers of AA7075-T6 alloy on a substrate sheet of AA2024-T4 alloy via the additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) technique and to optimize the deposition process parameters. The experiments were conducted over a wide range of feed rates (1–5 mm/min) and rotation speeds (200–1000 rpm). The axial deposition force and the thermal cycle were recorded. The heat input to achieve the AFSD was calculated. The AA7075 AFSD products were evaluated visually on the macroscale. The microstructures were also investigated utilizing an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an advanced EDS technique. As well as the presence phases, the mechanical performance of the deposited materials in terms of hardness and compressive strength was also examined. The results showed that the efficiency of the deposition process was closely related to the amount of heat generated, which was governed by the feeding rate, the rotational speed, and the downward force. AA7075 defect-free continuously multilayered parts were produced without any discontinuity defects at the interface with the substrate at deposition conditions of 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm/min and a constant 400 rpm consumable rod rotation speed (CRRS). The additively deposited AA7075-T6 layers exhibited a refined grain structure and uniformly distributed fragment precipitates compared to the base material (BM). The gain size decreased from 25 µm ± 4 for the AA7075-T6 BM to 1.75 µm ± 0.41 and 3.75 µm ± 0.78 for the AFSD materials fabricated at 1 and 4 mm/min deposition feeding rates, respectively, at 400 rpm/min. Among the feeding rates used, the 3 mm/min and 400 rpm rod rotation speed produced an AA7075 deposited part possessing the highest average hardness of 165 HV ± 5 and a compressive strength of 1320 MPa. Dissimilar metal samples of TC4/TiAl were successfully prepared by laser additive manufacturing (LAM) technology, with pure vanadium as the interlayer. The microstructure, phase composition, element distribution and mechanical properties at the interface of TC4/V and TiAl/V were analyzed by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and backscattering diffraction (EBSD). The experimental results showed that the interface microstructure of TiAl/V is mainly composed of γ, α2 phase and V solid solution. The microstructure of the TC4/V interface is mainly composed of β-Ti and V solid solution. There are no holes, metallurgical defects or microcracks at the above two interfaces, and the interface is bonded well. With the increase in the number of deposition layers, the interface bonding depth increases, and its thickness increases from 30 μm to 80 μm. The mechanical properties tests showed that the tensile strength and elongation of dissimilar metals with two layers of V interlayer TC4/TiAl are the highest, and their values are 483 MPa and 0.35%, respectively. Compared with the one-layer V intermediate layer sample (tensile strength 405 MPa, elongation 0.24%), the tensile strength and elongation are increased by 19.2% and 45%, respectively. Although the benefits of polymeric blend films have been well-established, mucilages' interaction with other commercial bio-based polymers remains greatly unknown. Pectin and alginate were used to develop such polymeric blend films, with the addition of both 'Algerian' and 'Morado' cultivar freeze-dried, native mucilage precipitate. Mucilage additions at 0.25% and 1% (w/w), together with glycerol at 60% (w/w), influenced the mechanical properties of the 5% (w/w) pectin–mucilage and 5% (w/w) alginate–mucilage blend films differently. 'Morado' mucilage positively influenced the pectin film tensile strength (TS) and puncture force (PF) measurements, increasing the overall film strength compared to the homopolymeric pectin films. Calcium chloride (CaCl2) treatment and increasing mucilage concentration further enhanced the composite pectin–mucilage film strength. Contrasting results were obtained for alginate blend films compared to those of pectin. Studying the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the microstructures of CaCl2-treated pectin–mucilage and alginate–mucilage films confirmed superior microstructural film networks for pectin–mucilage films, which resulted in enhanced film strength, where the lack of polymer compatibility, as seen with alginate–mucilage, resulted in decreased film strength. These results indicate that native mucilage should be considered when developing such blend polymeric films, as it has the potential to enhance the films' strength and elasticity. Nowadays, the particleboard industry cannot meet the market's demand. Therefore, filler materials have started to be used both to conserve raw materials and to enable the use of wood-based boards in different areas. This study investigates the effects of incorporating different ratios of activated carbon (0%, 1.5%, 4.5%, 7.5%) on the properties of particleboards. The physical properties were examined, including density, moisture content, thickness swelling, and water absorption. The results reveal that the density increased with increasing activated carbon content while the moisture content decreased, indicating improved dimensional stability and water resistance. Additionally, the color properties were influenced by activated carbon, leading to a darker appearance with decreased lightness and yellow-blue components. The mechanical properties, such as internal bond strength, modulus of rupture, and modulus of elasticity, showed significant enhancements with the addition of activated carbon, indicating improved bonding and increased strength. Moreover, the thermal conductivity decreased with increasing activated carbon content and improved insulation performance. Scanning electron microscope analysis confirmed the uniform distribution of activated carbon within the particleboard matrix, without agglomeration, positively impacting the mechanical performance. According to the thermogravimetric analysis results, the addition of activated carbon led to a decrease of up to 6.15% in mass loss compared to the control group. The incorporation of activated carbon at a ratio of 4.5% in particleboards confers notable enhancement to their physical, mechanical, and thermal characteristics. This paper presents an experimental study of the wet freeze–thaw (FT) durability of a fibre–polymer composite produced by vacuum infusion using an innovative bio-based unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and basalt fibres. As the benchmark, an equivalent composite produced with a conventional (oil-based) UPR was also tested. The composites were preconditioned in water immersion for 30 days at 20 °C followed by exposure to wet FT for up to 300 cycles; each FT cycle consisted of 3 h in dry freezing condition (−20 °C) and 8 h in thawing condition (23 °C) submerged in water. The composites' properties were assessed after preconditioning and after 100, 200, and 300 FT cycles, through mechanical (tensile, compressive, in-plane shear, interlaminar shear) and thermomechanical (dynamic mechanical analysis) tests. Gravimetric and scanning electron microscope analyses were also carried out. The results obtained show that the preconditioning stage, involving water immersion, caused most of the damage, with property reductions of 5% to 39% in the bio-composite, while in the oil-composite they ranged between 4% and 22%, being higher for matrix-dominated properties. On the other hand, FT alone had an insignificant effect on the degradation of material properties; after exposure to FT, property recovery was observed, specifically in matrix-dominated properties, such as interlaminar shear strength, which recovered by 12% in the bio-composite during exposure to FT. The overall performance of the bio-composite was inferior to the conventional one, especially during the preconditioning stage, and this was attributed to the hydrophilicity of some of the components of its bio-based resin. Dental 3D-printing technologies, including stereolithography (SLA), polyjet (triple-jetting technology), and fusion deposition modeling, have revolutionized the field of orthodontic occlusal splint manufacturing. Three-dimensional printing is now currently used in many dental fields, such as restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, implantology, and orthodontics. This study aimed to assess the mechanical properties of 3D-printed materials and compare them with the conventional polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Compression, flexural, and tensile properties were evaluated and compared between PMMA samples (n = 20) created using the "salt and pepper" technique and digitally designed 3D-printed samples (n = 20). The samples were subjected to scanning electron microscope analysis. Statistical analysis revealed that the control material (PMMA) exhibited a significantly higher Young's modulus of compression and tensile strength (p < 0.05). In the flexural tests, the control samples demonstrated superior load at break results (p < 0.05). However, the 3D-printed samples exhibited significantly higher maximum bending stress at maximum load (MPa) (p < 0.05). Young's modulus of tensile testing (MPa) was statistically significant higher for the control samples, while the 3D-printed samples demonstrated significantly higher values for elongation at break (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that 3D-printed materials are a promising alternative that can be effectively utilized in clinical practice, potentially replacing traditional heat-cured resin in various applications. The current work investigates the possibility of fabricating additive manufacturing products in solid-state form, from AA2011-T6 of 40 mm diameter rods as a feedstock, using an additive friction stir deposition (A-FSD) technique. The use of large diameter feedstocks, especially high-strength aluminum alloys (2XXX series), is a challenge, as it necessitates high power and the critical selection of the optimal A-FSD parameters, such as feed rate and spindle rotation speed. The study included applying a wide range of spindle rotation speeds, ranging from 400 to 1200 rpm, at three levels of feeding rates of 1, 3, and 5 mm/min. The AA2011-T6 friction stir deposited parts (FSDPs) were visually evaluated. This was followed by an examination of macrostructures through the thickness of the fabricated specimens. The characterization of microstructures was also carried out using optical microscopy and a scanning electron microscope equipped with advanced EDS analysis. Furthermore, the mechanical properties in terms of hardness and compressive strength of the AA2011-T6 base material (BM) and deposited materials were evaluated. Sound, additively manufactured products were successfully fabricated from 40 mm diameter AA2011-T6 feedstocks using the suggested deposition variables of 600 and 800 rpm spindle speeds and feeding rates of 1, 3, and 5 mm/min. The results indicated that the spindle speed and feeding rate govern the quality of the FSDPs. Furthermore, the axial load during the A-FSD process increased with increasing these parameters. In comparison to the AA2011-T6 BM, the additively deposited materials showed a refined grain structure and uniform dispersion of the fragment precipitates in their continuous multi-layers. The reduction ratio in grain size attains 71.56%, 76%, and 81.31% for the FSDPs processed at 800 rpm spindle speed and feeding rates of 1, 3 and 5 mm/min, respectively, compared to the grain size of BM. The Al2Cu and Al7Cu2Fe intermetallics are detected in the AA2011-T6 BM, and their deposited parts are in different shapes of spherical, almost spherical, irregular, and rod-like shapes. The compressive strength and hardness of the deposited parts increased with increasing spindle speed and feeding speeds. At a spindle speed of 800 rpm and a 5 mm/min feeding rate, the higher hardness and compressive strength gained were 85% and 93%, respectively, from that of the AA2011-T6 feedstock. The addition of nano- and microfillers to carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) to improve their static mechanical properties is attracting growing research interest because their introduction does not increase the weight of parts made from CFRPs. However, the current understanding of the high strain rate deformation behaviour of CFRPs containing nanofillers/microfillers is limited. The present study investigated the dynamic impact properties of carbon-fiber-reinforced phenolic composites (CFRPCs) modified with microfillers. The CFRPCs were fabricated using 2D woven carbon fibers, two phenolic resole resins (HRJ-15881 and SP-6877), and two microfillers (colloidal silica and silicon carbide (SiC)). The amount of microfillers incorporated into the CFRPCs varied from 0.0 wt.% to 2.0 wt.%. A split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB), operated at momentums of 15 kg m/s and 28 kg m/s, was used to determine the impact properties of the composites. The evolution of damage in the impacted specimens was studied using optical stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope. It was found that, at an impact momentum of 15 kg m/s, the impact properties of HRJ-15881-based CFRPCs increased with SiC addition up to 1.5 wt.%, while those of SP-6877-based composites increased only up to 0.5 wt.%. At 28 kg m/s, the impact properties of the composites increased up to 0.5 wt.% SiC addition for both SP-6877 and HRJ-15881 based composites. However, the addition of colloidal silica did not improve the dynamic impact properties of composites based on both phenolic resins at both impact momentums. The improvement in the impact properties of composites made with SiC microfiller can be attributed to improvement in crystallinity offered by the α-SiC type microfiller used in this study. No fracture was observed in specimens impacted at an impact momentum of 15 kg m/s. However, at 28 kg m/s, edge chip-off and cracks extending through the surface were observed at lower microfiller addition (≤1 wt.%), which became more pronounced at higher microfiller loading (≥1.5 wt.%). Hot rolling in the process chain of aluminum-rolled products presents the critical element of material quality and influences productivity. To increase the letter demand modifications of hot rolling, the consequential changes of microstructure, crystallographic texture, and mechanical and formability properties must be acknowledged and consistently considered when planning the rolling process and rolled product. Achieving lower thicknesses of the hot-rolled band would enable fewer passes with cold rolling; consequently, hot rolling with the same number of passes can be completed with lower temperatures. Microstructural and texture characterizations conducted using the light microscope and scanning electron microscope, respectively, of the 3.25 mm hot-rolled band revealed that the smaller grains appeared in the center of the cross-section, unlike for the 6 mm hot-rolled band, where smaller grains were detected on the top and bottom positions of the cross-section. Furthermore, the comparison also shows that the 6 mm hot-rolled band had 64% of random texture components and 83% of recrystallized grains, whereas the proportional adjustment for the 3.25 mm hot-rolled band had 42% of random texture components and 55% of recrystallized grains. For the mechanical testing results, the elongation values in rolling and transverse directions significantly differ only in the case of a hot-rolled band of 3.25 mm. Novel HEAp-Ti/Al laminated composites embedded with particles of the high-entropy alloy Al0.5CoCrFeNi (HEA) were fabricated by vacuum hot-press sintering at 730 °C. The phase composition and microstructure of the composites were studied with X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope SEM, energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) techniques. At this temperature, it has been observed that Al3Ti intermetallic compound is the favored phase and the reaction results in the dispersion of Al3Ti in the original Al layer. A large number of interfaces are formed between Al3Ti and Al. The deformed Al3Ti grains are concentrated in the interface near the Ti side. The mechanical properties, including tensile and compressive properties at room temperature, were analyzed. The tensile test results indicate that the composite exhibited an average tensile strength of 258 MPa and an average yield strain of 9.86%. Compression test results show that when a load perpendicular to the layer is applied, the yield strain and yield stress of the material are 9.67% and 474.09 MPa, respectively. As natural aggregates become increasingly scarce, attention has turned to ultra-fine dredged sand (UDS) generated in waterway regulation engineering. UDS is typically challenging to utilize due to its high clay content and high water demand. This article uses ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS)-based geopolymer to solidify UDS, along with sodium silicate (SS) and sodium hydroxide (SH) as alkaline activators. This paper explores the effects of SS modulus (SiO2/Na2O molar ratio) and mass percentage content of Na2O on the fluidity, setting time, mechanical properties, and shrinkage behavior of hybrid UDS-GGBS geopolymer (HUGG) paste. According to the research findings, increased SS modulus and Na2O content lead to decreased fluidity and setting time. When the Na2O content reaches 6%, flash coagulation occurs in the slurry, leading to more internal shrinkage cracks and pores. This has been confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. When Na2O content is 5%, and SS modulus is 1.0, the 90-day maximum compressive strength reaches 56.53 MPa, corresponding to a splitting tensile strength of 6.83 MPa, which can be considered the optimal formulation. Meanwhile, basalt and polypropylene fibers (BF and PPF) are chosen to compensate for the susceptibility to drying shrinkage. Both BF and PPF can significantly inhibit the linear drying shrinkage of the HUGG paste. The BF's ability to enhance mechanical properties is more robust than PPF's, which can make the paste more homogeneous. This study examines the impacts of copper and boron in parts per million (ppm) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of spheroidal graphite cast iron (SCI). Boron's inclusion increases the ferrite content whereas copper augments the stability of pearlite. The interaction between the two significantly influences the ferrite content. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis indicates that boron alters the enthalpy change of the α + Fe3C → γ conversion and the α → γ conversion. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis confirms the locations of copper and boron. Mechanical property assessments using a universal testing machine show that the inclusion of boron and copper decreases the tensile strength and yield strength of SCI, but simultaneously enhances elongation. Additionally, in SCI production, the utilization of copper-bearing scrap and trace amounts of boron-containing scrap metal, especially in the casting of ferritic nodular cast iron, offers potential for resource recycling. This highlights the importance of resource conservation and recycling in advancing sustainable manufacturing practices. This paper aims to improve the mechanical properties and fatigue life of AISI/SAE 4140 alloy steel connecting rods (CRs). Conventional CRs are typically manufactured through open die forging/hammering, blocking, and hot forging processes. In the present work, a modification to the process route has been proposed such that the open die forging/hammering was completely replaced with a multistep asymmetrical reducer rolling technique. Four rolling passes were introduced to achieve the desired preform shape and size. The effect of each rolling pass on grain size, mechanical properties, and fatigue life was investigated. Samples from each multistep rolling, blocking, and forging stage were subjected to impact, hardness, tensile, and fatigue testing. Metallography using optical and scanning electron microscopes was also conducted to reveal metallurgical changes. Fatigue testing and fractography were performed using the R.R. Moore Rotating-Beam Fatigue testing machine and scanning electron microscope, respectively, to evaluate the fatigue life and the fracture behavior of both the conventional and multistep rolled forged CRs. It was observed that, unlike the conventional forging process, multistep asymmetrical rolling gradually reduces grain size as the rolling progresses and improves yield, tensile, and impact strengths, hardness, and ductility. In comparison to conventional forging, multistep rolling led to an almost 33% and 29% increase in yield and tensile strengths, respectively. SiCp/6061Al composites with volume fractions of 5%, 10%, and 15% were prepared by the vacuum hot pressing sintering. Their microstructure and fracture morphology were observed and analyzed with an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The elastic–plastic behavior of the 6061Al matrix in the composites was studied by using the load–displacement curve obtained by the nanoindentation test, and the plastic constitutive equation was established. The representative volume element (RVE) model was established based on the geometric characteristics of the SiC particles identified by using image processing technology from the metallographic structure. The deformation and fracture process of the SiCp/6061Al composites under the uniaxial tensile load was simulated microscopically, and the microscopic deformation and fracture characteristics and mechanical properties of SiCp/6061Al composites under different interface strengths and different SiCp volume fractions were revealed. Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy products formed by selective laser melting (SLM) are characterized by high strength and low plasticity. In addition, there may be pores inside the material, which may become a fracture sprouting point and accelerate the failure of the parts. Using an optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and electronic universal testing machine, the effects of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) parameters on the microstructure and tensile property of SLM-formed Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy were investigated. The results show that HIP performed below the β-phase transition temperature, and the structure of the Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy is composed of an α phase and β phase. With the increase in the HIP temperature, the α lath coarsens into a short rod, the content of the β phase increases and coarsens, and the tensile strength and yield strength of Ti-6Al-4V show a decreasing trend. In this study, iron ore tailings (IOTs) are used as aggregates to prepare iron-ore-tailing-engineered cementitious composites (IOT-ECCs) to achieve clean production. Some mechanical indexes, such as compressive strength (fcu), four-point flexural strength (ff), axial compressive strength (fc), deformation properties, flexural toughness, and stress–strain behavior, are studied. The mass loss, fcu loss, relative dynamic modulus elasticity (RDEM), and deterioration mechanism after the sulfate freeze–thaw (F-T) cycle are discussed in detail. In addition, pore structure analysis is performed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), while a scanning electron microscope (SEM) is utilized to study the micro-morphology. The results showed that under the 20–80% IOT replacement ratio, IOT-ECCs exhibited improvements in their mechanical properties, pore structure, and resistance to sulfate freeze–thaw (F-T). The most notable mechanical properties and sulfate F-T resistance were demonstrated by the IOT-ECC with 40% IOTs (namely, IOT40-P2.0). Meanwhile, IOT40-P2.0 exhibited good pore structure as well as the bonding interface of the PF and the matrix. The pore structure and compactness of the matrix of IOT-ECCs gradually deteriorated as the F-T cycle increased. The research results will promote the application of IOTs in ECCs. The development of 3D-printed crown resin materials with improved mechanical and physical properties is an area of growing interest in dentistry. This study aimed to develop a 3D-printed crown resin material modified with zirconia glass (ZG) and glass silica (GS) microfillers to enhance overall mechanical and physical properties. A total of 125 specimens were created and divided into five groups: control unmodified resin, 5% either ZG or GS reinforced 3D-printed resin, and 10% either ZG or GS reinforced 3D-printed resin. The fracture resistance, surface roughness, and translucency parameter were measured, and fractured crowns were studied under a scanning electron microscope. The results showed that 3D-printed parts that were strengthened with ZG and GS microfillers demonstrated comparable mechanical performance to unmodified crown resin but resulted in greater surface roughness, and only the group that contained 5% ZG showed an increase in translucency. However, it should be noted that increased surface roughness may impact the aesthetics of the crowns, and further optimisation of microfillers concentrations may be necessary. These findings suggest that the newly developed dental-based resins that incorporate microfillers could be suitable for clinical applications, but further studies are necessary to optimise the nanoparticle concentrations and investigate their long-term clinical outcomes. The effect of different heat inputs of 1.45 kJ/mm, 1.78 kJ/mm and 2.31 kJ/mm on the microstructure and mechanical properties of deposited metals of the self-developed AWS A5.28 E120C-K4 high strength steel flux-cored wire was studied by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and mechanical property test. With the increase in heat input, the results showed that the microstructure of deposited metals became coarse. Acicular ferrite increased at first and then decreased, granular bainite increased and degenerated upper bainite and martensite decreased slightly. Under the low heat input of 1.45 kJ/mm, the cooling rate was fast and the element diffusion was uneven, which caused composition segregation and easy to form large size inclusions SiO2-TiC-CeAlO3 with weak binding to the matrix. Under the middle heat input of 1.78 kJ/mm, the composite rare earth inclusions in dimples were mainly TiC-CeAlO3. The dimples were small and uniformly distributed, and the dimple fracture mainly depended on the wall-breaking connection between medium-sized dimples rather than an intermediate media. Under the high heat input of 2.31 kJ/mm, SiO2 was easy to adhere to high melting point Al2O3 oxides to form irregular composite inclusions. Such irregular inclusions do not need to absorb too much energy to form necking. Finally, the integrated effects of microstructure and inclusions resulted in the optimum mechanical properties of deposited metals with a heat input of 1.78 kJ/mm, which was a tensile strength of 793 MPa and an average impact toughness at −40 °C of 56 J. The setting time of alkali-activated slag (AAS) binders is extremely short, while traditional retarders of Portland cement may be invalid for AAS. To find an effective retarder with a less negative impact on strength, borax (B), sucrose (S), and citric acid (CA) were selected as potential retarders. The setting time of AAS with different admixtures dosages of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, and the unconfined compressive strength and beam flexural strength of 3 d, 7 d, and 28 d AAS mortar specimens were tested. The microstructure of AAS with different additives was observed by scanning using an electron microscope (SEM), and the hydration products were analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (DT-TGA) to explain the retarding mechanism of AAS with different additives. The results showed that the incorporation of borax and citric acid could effectively prolong the setting time of AAS more than that of sucrose, and the retarding effect is more and more obvious with the increase in borax and citric acid dosages. However, sucrose and citric acid negatively influence AAS's unconfined compressive strength and flexural stress. The negative effect becomes more evident with the increase in sucrose and citric acid dosages. Borax is the most suitable retarder for AAS among the three selected additives. Al-Cu alloy has broad application prospects in the field of aerospace due to its excellent performance. In this paper, deposits with different Cu contents were prepared by the wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process, and the effects of Cu content on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The microstructure of Al-Cu alloy was investigated by metallography, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that both the number and size of the precipitated θ phases (Al2Cu) in the as-deposited material increase with the increase of Cu content. After the T4 treatment, the solid solution amount of Cu in the matrix showed a trend of first increasing and then remaining stable. When the content of Cu was greater than 5.65%, as the Cu content increased, the number and size of the remaining θ phases both increased. In the peak ageing state, the amount of precipitated θ' phase showed a trend of increasing and then remaining stable. After the T6 treatment, the mechanical properties showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of the content of Cu. When the Cu content was 5.65%, the deposit achieved the best mechanical properties, and the anisotropy of the mechanical properties disappeared. The tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation reached 538 MPa, 478 MPa, and 10.5%, respectively. When the content of Cu was greater than 5.65%, the anisotropy of mechanical properties was obvious, and the fracture mode of the vertical specimen changed from ductile fracture to brittle fracture. Incinerated waste fly ash is a toxic solid, which can cause serious harm to the environment. CO2-cured incinerated waste fly ash may be useful in decreasing the toxicity of waste fly ash and improving the corresponding mechanical properties of cement-based material with incinerated waste fly ash. Meanwhile, this technology can play a certain role in reducing the content of CO2 in the atmosphere. In this study, the influence of CO2-cured incinerated waste fly ash on the rheological parameters (the slump flow and plastic viscosity) and the setting time of fresh reactive powder cement concrete (RPC) is investigated. The flexural and compressive strengths of hardened RPC standard cured for 1 day, 3 days, and 28 days are measured. The leached amounts of Cr and Zn immersed in water for 6 months are measured. The scanning electron microscope photos, thermogravimetric analysis curves, and mercury intrusion curves are obtained. Our results show that the slump flow, the setting time, and the flexural and compressive strengths increased, and the plastic viscosity decreased by adding the waste fly ash with the maximum varying rates of 12.1%, 41.7%, 41.3%, and 61.2%, respectively. CO2 curing on the waste fly ash can increase the setting time and the flexural and compressive strengths with the maximum varying rates of 19.2%, 13.1%, and 14.2%. To reveal the deterioration process of magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) in an outdoor, alternating dry–wet service environment, the evolution of the macro- and micro-structures of the surface layer and inner core of MOC samples as well as their mechanical properties and increasing dry–wet cycle numbers were investigated by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a simultaneous thermal analyser (TG-DSC), a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and an microelectromechanical electrohydraulic servo pressure testing machine. The results show that as the number of dry–wet cycles increases, the water molecules gradually invade the interior of the samples, causing the hydrolysis of P 5 (5Mg(OH)2·MgCl2·8H2O) and hydration reactions of unreacted active MgO. After three dry–wet cycles, there are obvious cracks on the surface of the MOC samples, and they suffer from warped deformation. The microscopic morphology of the MOC samples changes from a gel state and a short, rod-like shape to a flake shape, which is a relatively loose structure. Meanwhile, the main phase composition of the samples becomes Mg(OH)2, and the Mg(OH)2 contents of the surface layer and inner core of the MOC samples are 54% and 56%, respectively, while the P 5 amounts are 12% and 15%, respectively. The compressive strength of the samples decreases from 93.2 MPa to 8.1 MPa and reduces by 91.3%, and their flexural strength declines from 16.4 MPa to 1.2 MPa. However, their deterioration process is delayed compared with the samples that were dipped in water continuously for 21 days whose compressive strength is 6.5 MPa. This is primarily ascribed to the fact that during the natural drying process, the water in the immersed samples evaporates, the decomposition of P 5 and the hydration reaction of unreacted active MgO both slow down, and the dried Mg(OH)2 may provide the partial mechanical properties, to some extent. In this study, we present the effects of 0.004~0.098 wt% Zr and thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the China RAFM steel, CLAM, as a feasibility study for improving mechanical properties. The inclusions in ingots were characterized using optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), which could be classified as fine simple particles and large complex particles. The complexity of the alloy's inclusion composition increases with the increasing Zr concentration. The higher the Zr content, the more complex the composition of inclusions in the alloy. The average diameter of inclusions in 0.004Zr steel was the smallest, which was 0.79 μm and the volume fraction was 0.018%. The highest yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and impact energy of 0.004Zr alloy at room temperature were 548.3 MPa, 679.4 MPa, 25.7%, and 253.9 J. The structure of the TMPed steels was all tempered martensite. With the increase in tempering temperature, the yield and tensile strength of the experimental steel gradually decreased, while the elongation and impact energy gradually increased. The 0.004ZrD and 0.004ZrH alloys had the best yield strength and impact energy, which were 597.9 and 611.8 MPa and 225.9 and 243.3 J, respectively. In addition, the alloys showed good thermal stability during the aging at 600 °C for 1500 h. It was discovered that TMP is a simple and practical industrial technique that could successfully enhance the mechanical properties of CLAM steel without sacrificing impact toughness. During operation, electronic components are exposed to high temperatures that may last for long periods, depending on the operating duration. Solder joints are one of the components most affected by thermal aging while in service. In this research, the effect of thermal aging duration and temperature on the mechanical properties of 92.8%Sn-3%Ag-0.5%Cu-3.3%Bi (Cyclomax) was investigated. The novelty of this work lies in the study of the important properties of a new generation of Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) materials (i.e., Cyclomax). Cyclomax is rare in industry and immature in research. To understand the effect of thermal aging, the microstructure was investigated, and changes in it and its mechanical properties were observed. To simulate solder joints in electronic devices, samples of solder balls were prepared and attached to copper pads on electronic boards. Most samples were then treated at 150 °C or 100 °C for up to 1000 h and some samples were left untreated for comparison. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to obtain images of the microstructure. The shear stress–shear strain relationships, including the ultimate shear strength (USS), the modulus of elasticity and the ultimate energy (UE), were investigated. The microstructure images indicated the presence of a layer of Cu6Sn5 on top of the copper pad before thermal aging was applied. The thickness of this layer increased with the application of thermal aging over time. The results for the shear stress–shear strain relationship indicate that all of the USS, the total energy (TE) to shear off the solder balls and the UE decreased at the beginning of the thermal aging and then reversed to increase later. In general, isothermal aging reduces the performance of Cyclomax solder joints in terms of the minimum force and energy required to separate and subsequently damage electronic components. This paper investigated the fracture toughness and enhancement mechanism for each component in bamboo-based composites at the cellular level. In situ characterization techniques identified the fracture behaviors of bamboo-based composites in three-point bending tests, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) further visualized the crack propagation of the fracture surface. In addition, the improvement mechanism of bamboo-based composites was illustrated by mechanical properties at the cellular level assisted with nanoindentation tests. Our in situ test results showed that the bamboo-based composites exhibited a longer deformation and higher bending load compared with bamboo. The fracture was non-catastrophic, and crack propagated in a tortuous manner in bamboo-based composites. Microstructural analysis revealed that phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin pulled out and middle lamella (ML) breaking rather than transverse transwall fracturing occurred in parenchymal cells. The higher density of fibers in the bamboo-based composites triggered massive interfacial delamination in the middle lamella (ML), which was a weak mechanical interface. Furthermore, indented modulus and hardness illustrated that phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin improved the mechanical strength of cell walls, especially parenchymal cells. The crosslinks of PF resin with the cell walls and massive fibers were the primary mechanisms responsible for the fracture toughness of bamboo-based composites, which could be helpful for advanced composites. This study examines the mechanical performance, deformability properties and rheological properties of a newly developed waterborne epoxy resin (WER)-modified emulsified asphalt (WE/A) binder for micro-surfacing. Two types of WER, semi-flexible and rigid, were used to modify the binder. Furthermore, the modification mechanism was investigated using the fluorescent microscope test and the scanning electron microscope (SEM). In addition, the pavement performance at micro-surfacing was studied using the wet wheel wear resistance test, the pendulum friction test and the slurry rutting test. The results indicated that with a small content (<15%) of WER in WE/A, WER existed as a continuous structure (cellular membrane wrapped around asphalt bubbles), thereby enhancing its high temperature properties and mechanical properties. Meanwhile, it also improved the cohesion properties of the transition interface between the aggregate and asphalt (enhanced by at least 30.0%) and the rutting resistance (improved by about 55.3–63.8%). In recent years, many researchers have focused on the preparation of carbon and basalt fiber-reinforced composites. As a result, the composites have gained popularity as an alternative to traditional materials such as wood, steel, and aluminum. Carbon and basalt fibers were used in a bidirectional woven mat, with particulates varying from 0 to 15 wt% nanoparticle SiC. The hybrid laminates were fabricated through vacuum bag infusion methods. The novelty of the research work lies in studying the influence of nanoparticle SiC-combined carbon and basalt fibers arranged in six stacking sequences, with LY556 used as polyester matrix. Specimens were prepared and tested as per ASTM standards. Tensile, flexural, impact, and hardness tests were performed on the obtained specimens and average values were obtained. It was found that 15% SiC filler addition enhanced (20%) the mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscope photos revealed the bonding between the fiber mat and the matrix of thecrystal structure. The obtained tensile strength was 346 MPa and the flexural strength was 388 MPa. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that mechanical properties were improved with the addition of 15% SiCnanoparticles. Additive manufacturing technology (AMT) has transformed polymer composites' manufacturing process with its exceptional ability to construct complex products with unique materials, functions, and structures. Besides limiting studies of manufacturing arbitrarily shaped composites using AMT, printed structures with a high concentration of nanocellulose face adhesion issues upon drying, resulting in shape fidelity issues and low mechanical strength. This research demonstrates an economical approach to printing a high-concentration (25.46 wt%) nanocellulose (NC) layer-wise pattern to fabricate structures. Two different composites are fabricated: (1) 3D-printed pure and high-concentration (10, 15, and 20 wt%) polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA)-blended NC structures followed by freeze-drying and impregnation of Epofix resin by varying hardener contents; (2) 3D-printed PVA-blended NC green composites dried at cleanroom conditions (Relative humidity 45%; Temperature 25 °C). Different contents (10, 15, and 20 wt%) of PVA as a crosslinker were blended with NC to assist the printed layers' adhesions. An optimum PVA content of 15 wt% and an Epofix resin with 4 wt% hardener cases showed the highest bending strength of 55.41 ± 3.63 MPa and elastic modulus of 4.25 ± 0.37 GPa. In contrast, the 15 wt% PVA-blended NC cleanroom-dried green composites without resin infusion showed bending strength and elastic modulus of 94.78 ± 3.18 MPa and 9.00 ± 0.27 GPa, reflecting high interface adhesions as confirmed by scanning electron microscope. The effect of hydroxyapatite (HAp) synthesized by the chemical precipitation process on the morphology and properties of composites based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was investigated at various filler content ratios, i.e., 5, 10 and 15 wt%. Both neat PLA and PLA-based composites were first prepared using the solvent casting method, followed by melt compounding in an internal mixer, whereas tensile specimens were obtained by thermo-compression. The study revealed that the addition of 5 wt% of HAp into the PLA led to a slight improvement in both the thermal stability and tensile properties of the composite material in comparison with neat PLA and other composite samples. Indeed, the values of the tensile strength and modulus increased from approximately 61 MPa and 2.9 GPa for the neat PLA to almost 64 MPa and 3.057 GPa for the composite sample, respectively. Moreover, the degradation temperature at a 5 wt% mass loss also increased by almost 5 °C compared to other samples, due probably to a finer dispersion of the HAp particles in the PLA, as observed under a scanning electron microscope. Furthermore, the FT-IR spectra displayed some changes in the chemical structure of the PLA/HAp (5 wt%), indicating the occurrence of filler-matrix interactions. At a higher filler content ratio, a decrease in the properties of the PLA/HAp composites was observed, being more pronounced at 15 wt%. The PLA composite containing 5 wt% HAp presents the best compromise among the investigated properties.
