In the realm of Earth observation and remote sensing data analysis, the advancement of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) classification technology is of paramount importance. Nevertheless, the intricate nature of hyperspectral data, coupled with the scarcity of labeled data, presents significant challenges in this domain. To mitigate these issues, we introduce a self-supervised learning algorithm predicated on a spectral transformer for HSI classification under conditions of limited labeled data, with the objective of enhancing the efficacy of HSI classification. The S3L algorithm operates in two distinct phases: pretraining and fine-tuning. During the pretraining phase, the algorithm learns the spatial representation of HSI from unlabeled data, utilizing a masking mechanism and a spectral transformer, thereby augmenting the sequence dependence of spectral features. Subsequently, in the fine-tuning phase, labeled data is employed to refine the pretrained weights, thereby improving the precision of HSI classification. Within the comprehensive encoder–decoder framework, we propose a novel spectral transformer module specifically engineered to synergize spatial feature extraction with spectral domain analysis. This innovative module adeptly navigates the complex interplay among various spectral bands, capturing both global and sequential spectral dependencies. Uniquely, it incorporates a gated recurrent unit (GRU) layer within the encoder to enhance its ability to process spectral sequences. Our experimental evaluations across several public datasets reveal that our proposed method, distinguished by its spectral transformer, achieves superior classification performance, particularly in scenarios with limited labeled samples, outperforming existing state-of-the-art approaches. This paper introduces a frequency-domain false data injection attack called Frequency Spectrum Attack (FSA) and explores its effects on load forecasting and the energy management system (EMS) in a microgrid. The FSA analyzes time-series signals in the frequency domain to identify patterns in their frequency spectrum. It learns the distribution of dominant frequencies in a dataset of healthy signals. Subsequently, it manipulates the amplitudes of dominant frequencies within this healthy distribution, ensuring a stealthy attack against statistical analysis of the signal spectrum. We evaluated the performance of FSA on LSTM, a state-of-the-art network for load forecasting. The results show that FSA can triple the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of predictions compared to the normal case and increase it by 70% compared to noise injection attacks. Furthermore, FSA indirectly enhances battery utilization in the EMS by 45%. We then proposed a detection method that combines statistical analysis and machine-learning-based classification techniques with features. The model effectively distinguishes FSA from healthy and noisy signals, achieving an accuracy of 98.7% and an F1-score of 98.1% on a load dataset, covering healthy, FSA, and noisy load data. Finally, a countermeasure was introduced based on the statistical analysis of the frequency spectrum of healthy signals to mitigate the impact of FSA. Raman spectroscopy (RS) techniques are attracting attention in the medical field as a promising tool for real-time biochemical analyses. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms with RS has greatly enhanced its ability to accurately classify spectral data in vivo. This combination has opened up new possibilities for precise and efficient analysis in medical applications. In this study, healthy and cancerous specimens from 22 patients who underwent open colorectal surgery were collected. By using these spectral data, we investigate an optimal preprocessing pipeline for statistical analysis using AI techniques. This exploration entails proposing preprocessing methods and algorithms to enhance classification outcomes. The research encompasses a thorough ablation study comparing machine learning and deep learning algorithms toward the advancement of the clinical applicability of RS. The results indicate substantial accuracy improvements using techniques like baseline correction, L2 normalization, filtering, and PCA, yielding an overall accuracy enhancement of 15.8%. In comparing various algorithms, machine learning models, such as XGBoost and Random Forest, demonstrate effectiveness in classifying both normal and abnormal tissues. Similarly, deep learning models, such as 1D-Resnet and particularly the 1D-CNN model, exhibit superior performance in classifying abnormal cases. First-episode psychosis (FEP) typically marks the onset of severe psychiatric disorders and represents a critical period in the field of mental health. The early diagnosis of this condition is essential for timely intervention and improved clinical outcomes. In this study, the classification of FEP was investigated using the analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) signals and circulant spectrum analysis (ciSSA) sub-band signals. FEP poses a significant diagnostic challenge in the realm of mental health, and it is aimed at introducing a novel and effective approach for early diagnosis. To achieve this, the LASSO method was utilized to select the most significant features derived from entropy, frequency, and statistical-based characteristics obtained from ciSSA sub-band signals, as well as their hybrid combinations. Subsequently, a high-performance classification model has been developed using machine learning techniques, including ensemble, support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN) methods. The results of this study demonstrated that the hybrid features extracted from EEG signals' ciSSA sub-bands, in combination with the SVM method, achieved a high level of performance, with an area under curve (AUC) of 0.9893, an accuracy of 96.23%, a sensitivity of 0.966, a specificity of 0.956, a precision of 0.9667, and an F1 score of 0.9666. The dynamic analysis of structures is a computationally intensive procedure that must be considered, in order to make accurate seismic performance assessments in civil and structural engineering applications. To avoid these computationally demanding tasks, simplified methods are often used by engineers in practice, to estimate the behavior of complex structures under dynamic loading. This paper presents an assessment of several machine learning (ML) algorithms, with different characteristics, that aim to predict the dynamic analysis response of multi-story buildings. Large datasets of dynamic response analyses results were generated through standard sampling methods and conventional response spectrum modal analysis procedures. In an effort to obtain the best algorithm performance, an extensive hyper-parameter search was elaborated, followed by the corresponding feature importance. The ML model which exhibited the best performance was deployed in a web application, with the aim of providing predictions of the dynamic responses of multi-story buildings, according to their characteristics. Zika virus (ZIKV) diagnosis is currently performed through an invasive, painful, and costly procedure using molecular biology. Consequently, the search for a non-invasive, more cost-effective, reagent-free, and sustainable method for ZIKV diagnosis is of great relevance. It is critical to prepare a global strategy for the next ZIKV outbreak given its devastating consequences, particularly in pregnant women. Attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy has been used to discriminate systemic diseases using saliva; however, the salivary diagnostic application in viral diseases is unknown. To test this hypothesis, we intradermally challenged interferon-gamma gene knockout C57/BL6 mice with ZIKV (50 µL,105 FFU, n = 7) or vehicle (50 µL, n = 8). Saliva samples were collected on day three (due to the peak of viremia) and the spleen was also harvested. Changes in the salivary spectral profile were analyzed by Student's t test (p < 0.05), multivariate analysis, and the diagnostic capacity by ROC curve. ZIKV infection was confirmed by real-time PCR of the spleen sample. The infrared spectroscopy coupled with univariate analysis suggested the vibrational mode at 1547 cm−1 as a potential candidate to discriminate ZIKV and control salivary samples. Three PCs explained 93.2% of the cumulative variance in PCA analysis and the spectrochemical analysis with LDA achieved an accuracy of 93.3%, with a specificity of 87.5% and sensitivity of 100%. The LDA-SVM analysis showed 100% discrimination between both classes. Simple Summary: One of the most important and hardest tasks during cancer diagnostics and operations is to differentiate between cancerous and non-malignant tissues. It is important to detect and remove all cancerous cells, but at the same time cut as little as possible non-malignant tissue. That is why there is now a high demand for methods that will help to recognize margins of cancer. One non-invasive, new and promising method is hyperspectral imaging (HSI) with the use of machine learning (ML). However, the output of the ML models is usually fuzzy, especially when pixel-wise classification methods are used. This research shows that, (1) the impact of particular pre-processing techniques on the performance of tissue recognition depends on the ML model used and its architecture and could be explained by the wavelengths emphasized by the models, and (2) that the application of post-processing can strongly improve performance (both sensitivity and specificity) and the ability to easily differentiate between tissue types. Background: Recent studies have shown that hyperspectral imaging (HSI) combined with neural networks can detect colorectal cancer. Usually, different pre-processing techniques (e.g., wavelength selection and scaling, smoothing, denoising) are analyzed in detail to achieve a well-trained network. The impact of post-processing was studied less. Methods: We tested the following methods: (1) Two pre-processing techniques (Standardization and Normalization), with (2) Two 3D-CNN models: Inception-based and RemoteSensing (RS)-based, with (3) Two post-processing algorithms based on median filter: one applies a median filter to a raw predictions map, the other applies the filter to the predictions map after adopting a discrimination threshold. These approaches were evaluated on a dataset that contains ex vivo hyperspectral (HS) colorectal cancer records of 56 patients. Results: (1) Inception-based models perform better than RS-based, with the best results being 92% sensitivity and 94% specificity; (2) Inception-based models perform better with Normalization, RS-based with Standardization; (3) Our outcomes show that the post-processing step improves sensitivity and specificity by 6.6% in total. It was also found that both post-processing algorithms have the same effect, and this behavior was explained. Conclusion: HSI combined with tissue classification algorithms is a promising diagnostic approach whose performance can be additionally improved by the application of the right combination of pre- and post-processing. Simple Summary: The complete resection of the malignant tumor during surgery is crucial for the patient's survival. To date, surgeons have been intraoperatively supported by information from a pathologist, who performs a frozen section analysis of resected tissue. This tumor margin evaluation is subjective, methodologically limited and underlies a selection bias. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is an established and rapid supporting technique. New artificial-intelligence-based techniques such as machine learning (ML) can harness this complex spectral information for the verification of cancer tissue. We performed HSI on 23 unstained tissue sections from seven patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma and trained the ML model for tumor recognition resulting in an accuracy of 0.76, a specificity of 0.89 and a sensitivity of 0.48. The results were in accordance with the histopathological annotations and do, therefore, enable the delineation of tumor margins with high speed and accuracy during surgery. The intraoperative assessment of tumor margins of head and neck cancer is crucial for complete tumor resection and patient outcome. The current standard is to take tumor biopsies during surgery for frozen section analysis by a pathologist after H&E staining. This evaluation is time-consuming, subjective, methodologically limited and underlies a selection bias. Optical methods such as hyperspectral imaging (HSI) are therefore of high interest to overcome these limitations. We aimed to analyze the feasibility and accuracy of an intraoperative HSI assessment on unstained tissue sections taken from seven patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. Afterwards, the tissue sections were subjected to standard histopathological processing and evaluation. We trained different machine learning models on the HSI data, including a supervised 3D convolutional neural network to perform tumor detection. The results were congruent with the histopathological annotations. Therefore, this approach enables the delineation of tumor margins with artificial HSI-based histopathological information during surgery with high speed and accuracy on par with traditional intraoperative tumor margin assessment (Accuracy: 0.76, Specificity: 0.89, Sensitivity: 0.48). Simple Summary: At present, quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is increasingly utilized in cancer imaging. Compared to other imaging modalities that take several days to weeks to assess treatment effectiveness, QUS can provide a rapid treatment evaluation. Its implementation has been documented in characterizing benign versus malignant breast lesions, assessing lymph nodes, predicting and monitoring tumor response, etc. Both preclinical and clinical studies have confirmed that changes in QUS parameters are directly correlated with tissue microstructural alterations. QUS parameters and textural analyses have widely been used to predict and monitor neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) response in locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) patients. Thus, QUS methods have emerged as one of the most useful imaging techniques for the management of several tumor types. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is a non-invasive novel technique that allows treatment response monitoring. Studies have shown that QUS backscatter variables strongly correlate with changes observed microscopically. Increases in cell death result in significant alterations in ultrasound backscatter parameters. In particular, the parameters related to scatterer size and scatterer concentration tend to increase in relation to cell death. The use of QUS in monitoring tumor response has been discussed in several preclinical and clinical studies. Most of the preclinical studies have utilized QUS for evaluating cell death response by differentiating between viable cells and dead cells. In addition, clinical studies have incorporated QUS mostly for tissue characterization, including classifying benign versus malignant breast lesions, as well as responder versus non-responder patients. In this review, we highlight some of the important findings of previous preclinical and clinical studies and expand the applicability and therapeutic benefits of QUS in clinical settings. We summarized some recent clinical research advances in ultrasound-based radiomics analysis for monitoring and predicting treatment response and characterizing benign and malignant breast lesions. Raman spectroscopy (RS) is a spectroscopic method which indirectly measures the vibrational states within samples. This information on vibrational states can be utilized as spectroscopic fingerprints of the sample, which, subsequently, can be used in a wide range of application scenarios to determine the chemical composition of the sample without altering it, or to predict a sample property, such as the disease state of patients. These two examples are only a small portion of the application scenarios, which range from biomedical diagnostics to material science questions. However, the Raman signal is weak and due to the label-free character of RS, the Raman data is untargeted. Therefore, the analysis of Raman spectra is challenging and machine learning based chemometric models are needed. As a subset of representation learning algorithms, deep learning (DL) has had great success in data science for the analysis of Raman spectra and photonic data in general. The accurate mapping of urban impervious surfaces from remote sensing images is crucial for understanding urban land-cover change and addressing impervious-surface-change-related environment issues. To date, the authors of most studies have built indices to map impervious surfaces based on shortwave infrared (SWIR) or thermal infrared (TIR) bands from middle–low-spatial-resolution remote sensing images. However, this limits the use of high-spatial-resolution remote sensing data (e.g., GaoFen-2, Quickbird, and IKONOS). In addition, the separation of bare soil and impervious surfaces has not been effectively solved. In this article, on the basis of the spectra analysis of impervious surface and non-impervious surface (vegetation, water, soil and non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV)) data acquired from world-recognized spectral libraries and Sentinel-2 MSI images in different regions and seasons, a novel spectral index named the Normalized Impervious Surface Index (NISI) was proposed for extracting impervious area information by using blue, green, red and near-infrared (NIR) bands. We performed comprehensive assessments for the NISI, and the results demonstrated that the NISI provided the best studied performance in separating the soil and impervious surfaces from Sentinel-2 MSI images. Furthermore, regarding impervious surfaces mapping accuracy, the NISI had an overall accuracy (OA) of 89.28% (±0.258), a producer's accuracy (PA) of 89.76% (±1.754), and a user's accuracy (UA) of 90.68% (±1.309), which were higher than those of machine learning algorithms, thus supporting the NISI as an effective measurement for urban impervious surfaces mapping and analysis. Realizing the rapid measurement of coal moisture content (MC) is of great significance. However, existing measurement methods are time-consuming and damage the original properties of the samples. To address these concerns, a coal MC intelligent measurement system is designed in this study that integrates microwave spectrum analysis and the distance-weighted k-nearest neighbor (DW-kNN) algorithm to realize rapid and non-destructive measurement of coal MC. Specifically, the measurement system is built using portable microwave analysis equipment, which can efficiently collect the microwave signals of coal. To improve the cleanliness of modeling data, an iterative clipping method based on Mahalanobis distance (MD-ICM) is used to detect and eliminate outliers. Based on multiple microwave frequency bands, various machine learning methods are evaluated, and it is found that coal MC measurement using broad frequency signals of 8.05–12.01 GHz yields the best results. Experiments are also carried out on coals from different regions to examine the regional robustness of the proposed method. The results of on-site testing with 27 additional samples show that the method based on the combination of microwave spectrum analysis and DW-kNN has a potential application prospect in the rapid measurement of coal MC. Monthly rainfall forecasts can be translated into monthly runoff predictions that could support water resources planning and management activities. Therefore, development of monthly rainfall forecasting models in reservoir watersheds is essential for generating future rainfall amounts as an input to a water-resources-system simulation model to predict water shortage conditions. This research aims to examine the reliability of linking a data preprocessing method (singular spectrum analysis, SSA) with machine learning, least-squares support vector regression (LS-SVR), and random forest (RF), for monthly rainfall forecasting in two reservoir watersheds (Deji and Shihmen reservoir watersheds) located in Taiwan. Merging SSA with LS-SVR and RF, the hybrid models (SSA-LSSVR and SSA-RF) were developed and compared with the standard models (LS-SVR and RF). The proposed models were calibrated and validated using the watersheds' observed areal monthly rainfalls separated into 70 percent of data for calibration and 30 percent of data for validation. Model performances were evaluated using two accuracy measures, root mean square error (RMSE) and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE). Results show that the hybrid models could efficiently forecast monthly rainfalls. Nonetheless, the performances of the hybrid models vary in both watersheds which suggests that prior knowledge about the watershed's hydrological behavior would be helpful to implement the appropriate model. Overall, the hybrid models significantly surpass the standard models for the two studied watersheds, which indicates that the proposed models are a prudent modeling approach that could be employed in the current research regions for monthly rainfall forecasting. The miniaturization of spectrometer can broaden the application area of spectrometry, which has huge academic and industrial value. Among various miniaturization approaches, filter-based miniaturization is a promising implementation by utilizing broadband filters with distinct transmission functions. Mathematically, filter-based spectral reconstruction can be modeled as solving a system of linear equations. In this paper, we propose an algorithm of spectral reconstruction based on sparse optimization and dictionary learning. To verify the feasibility of the reconstruction algorithm, we design and implement a simple prototype of a filter-based miniature spectrometer. The experimental results demonstrate that sparse optimization is well applicable to spectral reconstruction whether the spectra are directly sparse or not. As for the non-directly sparse spectra, their sparsity can be enhanced by dictionary learning. This paper presents a hierarchical deep framework called Spectral-Spatial Response (SSR) to jointly learn spectral and spatial features of Hyperspectral Images (HSIs) by iteratively abstracting neighboring regions. SSR forms a deep architecture and is able to learn discriminative spectral-spatial features of the input HSI at different scales. It includes several existing spectral-spatial-based methods as special scenarios within a single unified framework. Based on SSR, we further propose the Subspace Learning-based Networks (SLN) as an example of SSR for HSI classification. In SLN, the joint spectral and spatial features are learned using templates simply learned by Marginal Fisher Analysis (MFA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). An important contribution to the success of SLN is the exploitation of label information of training samples and the local spatial structure of HSI. Extensive experimental results on four challenging HSI datasets taken from the Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and Reflective Optics System Imaging Spectrometer (ROSIS) airborne sensors show the implementational simplicity of SLN and verify the superiority of SSR for HSI classification. During the acquisition process hyperspectral images (HSI) are inevitably corrupted by various noises, which greatly influence their visual impression and subsequent applications. In this paper, a novel Bayesian approach integrating hierarchical sparse learning and spectral-spatial information is proposed for HSI denoising. Based on the structure correlations, spectral bands with similar and continuous features are segmented into the same band-subset. To exploit local similarity, each subset is then divided into overlapping cubic patches. All patches can be regarded as consisting of clean image component, Gaussian noise component and sparse noise component. The first term is depicted by a linear combination of dictionary elements, where Gaussian process with Gamma distribution is applied to impose spatial consistency on dictionary. The last two terms are utilized to fully depict the noise characteristics. Furthermore, the sparseness of the model is adaptively manifested through Beta-Bernoulli process. Calculated by Gibbs sampler, the proposed model can directly predict the noise and dictionary without priori information of the degraded HSI. The experimental results on both synthetic and real HSI demonstrate that the proposed approach can better suppress the existing various noises and preserve the structure/spectral-spatial information than the compared state-of-art approaches. Early identification of cognitive impairment would allow affected patients to receive care at earlier stage. Changes in the arterial stiffness have been identified as a prominent pathological feature of dementia. This study aimed to verify if applying machine-learning analysis to spectral indices of the arterial pulse waveform can be used to discriminate different cognitive conditions of community subjects. 3-min Radial arterial blood pressure waveform (BPW) signals were measured noninvasively in 123 subjects. Eight machine-learning algorithms were used to evaluate the following 4 pulse indices for 10 harmonics (total 40 BPW spectral indices): amplitude proportion and its coefficient of variation; phase angle and its standard deviation. Significant differences were noted in the spectral pulse indices between Alzheimer's-disease patients and control subjects. Using them as training data (AUC = 70.32% by threefold cross-validation), a significant correlation (R2 = 0.36) was found between the prediction probability of the test data (comprising community subjects at two sites) and the Mini-Mental-State-Examination score. This finding illustrates possible physiological connection between arterial pulse transmission and cognitive function. The present findings from pulse-wave and machine-learning analyses may be useful for discriminating cognitive condition, and hence in the development of a user-friendly, noninvasive, and rapid method for the early screening of dementia. Hence, correct granite identification and classification from the outset of processing to the end-product stage optimizes the management and control of stocks of granite slabs and tiles and facilitates the operation of traceability systems. With the rapid development of aeronautic and deep space exploration technologies, a large number of high-resolution asteroid spectral data have been gathered, which can provide diagnostic information for identifying different categories of asteroids as well as their surface composition and mineralogical properties. However, owing to the noise of observation systems and the ever-changing external observation environments, the observed asteroid spectral data always contain noise and outliers exhibiting indivisible pattern characteristics, which will bring great challenges to the precise classification of asteroids. In order to alleviate the problem and to improve the separability and classification accuracy for different kinds of asteroids, this paper presents a novel Neighboring Discriminant Component Analysis (NDCA) model for asteroid spectrum feature learning. The key motivation is to transform the asteroid spectral data from the observation space into a feature subspace wherein the negative effects of outliers and noise will be minimized while the key category-related valuable knowledge in asteroid spectral data can be well explored. The effectiveness of the proposed NDCA model is verified on real-world asteroid reflectance spectra measured over the wavelength range from 0.45 to 2.45 μm, and promising classification performance has been achieved by the NDCA model in combination with different classifier models, such as the nearest neighbor (NN), support vector machine (SVM) and extreme learning machine (ELM). To address the problem that the faults in axial piston pumps are complex and difficult to effectively diagnose, an integrated hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method based on the modified ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD), autoregressive (AR) spectrum energy, and wavelet kernel extreme learning machine (WKELM) methods is presented in this paper. First, the non-linear and non-stationary hydraulic pump vibration signals are decomposed into several intrinsic mode function (IMF) components by the MEEMD method. Next, AR spectrum analysis is performed for each IMF component, in order to extract the AR spectrum energy of each component as fault characteristics. Then, a hydraulic pump fault diagnosis model based on WKELM is built, in order to extract the features and diagnose faults of hydraulic pump vibration signals, for which the recognition accuracy reached 100%. Finally, the fault diagnosis effect of the hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method proposed in this paper is compared with BP neural network, support vector machine (SVM), and extreme learning machine (ELM) methods. The hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method presented in this paper can diagnose faults of single slipper wear, single slipper loosing and center spring wear type with 100% accuracy, and the fault diagnosis time is only 0.002 s. Simple Summary: Detection of colorectal carcinoma is performed visually by investigators and is confirmed pathologically. With hyperspectral imaging, an expanded spectral range of optical information is now available for analysis. The acquired recordings were analyzed with a neural network, and it was possible to differentiate tumor from healthy mucosa in colorectal carcinoma by automatic classification with high reliability. Classification and visualization were performed based on a four-layer perceptron neural network. Currently, colorectal cancer (CRC) is mainly identified via a visual assessment during colonoscopy, increasingly used artificial intelligence algorithms, or surgery. Subsequently, CRC is confirmed through a histopathological examination by a pathologist. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), a non-invasive optical imaging technology, has shown promising results in the medical field. In the current study, we combined HSI with several artificial intelligence algorithms to discriminate CRC. Between July 2019 and May 2020, 54 consecutive patients undergoing colorectal resections for CRC were included. The tumor was imaged from the mucosal side with a hyperspectral camera. Plant stresses have been monitored using the imaging or spectrometry of plant leaves in the visible (red-green-blue or RGB), near-infrared (NIR), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet (UV) wavebands, often augmented by fluorescence imaging or fluorescence spectrometry. Imaging at multiple specific wavelengths (multi-spectral imaging) or across a wide range of wavelengths (hyperspectral imaging) can provide exceptional information on plant stress and subsequent diseases. Digital cameras, thermal cameras, and optical filters have become available at a low cost in recent years, while hyperspectral cameras have become increasingly more compact and portable. Furthermore, smartphone cameras have dramatically improved in quality, making them a viable option for rapid, on-site stress detection. Due to these developments in imaging technology, plant stresses can be monitored more easily using handheld and field-deployable methods. Recent advances in machine learning algorithms have allowed for images and spectra to be analyzed and classified in a fully automated and reproducible manner, without the need for complicated image or spectrum analysis methods. This review will highlight recent advances in portable (including smartphone-based) detection methods for biotic and abiotic stresses, discuss data processing and machine learning techniques that can produce results for stress identification and classification, and suggest future directions towards the successful translation of these methods into practical use. Defects introduced during the growth process greatly affect the device performance of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here we demonstrate the applicability of employing machine-learning-based analysis to distinguish the monolayer continuous film and defect areas of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) using position-dependent information extracted from its Raman spectra. The random forest method can analyze multiple Raman features to identify samples, making up for the problem of not being able to effectively identify by using just one certain variable with high recognition accuracy. Even some dispersed nucleation site defects can be predicted, which would commonly be ignored under an optical microscope because of the lower optical contrast. The successful application for classification and analysis highlights the potential for implementing machine learning to tap the depth of classical methods in 2D materials research. A machine learning approach is applied to Raman spectra of cells from the MIA PaCa-2 human pancreatic cancer cell line to distinguish between tumor repopulating cells (TRCs) and parental control cells, and to aid in the identification of molecular signatures. Fifty-one Raman spectra from the two types of cells are analyzed to determine the best combination of data type, dimension size, and classification technique to differentiate the cell types. An accuracy of 0.98 is obtained from support vector machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbor (kNN) classifiers with various dimension reduction and feature selection tools. The metro system plays an important role in urban public transit, and the passenger flow forecasting is fundamental to assisting operators establishing an intelligent transport system (ITS). The forecasting results can provide necessary information for travelling decision of travelers and metro operations of managers. In order to investigate the inner characteristics of passenger flow and make a more accurate prediction with less training time, a novel model (i.e., SSA-AWELM), a combination of singular spectrum analysis (SSA) and AdaBoost-weighted extreme learning machine (AWELM), is proposed in this paper. SSA is developed to decompose the original data into three components of trend, periodicity, and residue. AWELM is developed to forecast each component desperately. The three predicted results are summed as the final outcomes. In the experiments, the dataset is collected from the automatic fare collection (AFC) system of Hangzhou metro in China. We extracted three weeks of passenger flow to carry out multistep prediction tests and a comparison analysis. The results indicate that the proposed SSA-AWELM model can reduce both predicted errors and training time. In particular, compared with the prevalent deep-learning model long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network, SSA-AWELM has reduced the testing errors by 22% and saved time by 84%, on average. Imaging techniques such as computed tomographies (CT) play a major role in clinical imaging and diagnosis of malignant lesions. In recent years, metal nanoparticle platforms enabled effective payload delivery for several imaging techniques. Due to the possibility of surface modification, metal nanoparticles are predestined to facilitate molecular tumor targeting. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of anti-plasma membrane Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) antibody functionalized gold nanoparticles (cmHsp70.1-AuNPs) for tumor-specific multimodal imaging. Membrane-associated Hsp70 is exclusively presented on the plasma membrane of malignant cells of multiple tumor entities but not on corresponding normal cells, predestining this target for a tumor-selective in vivo imaging. In vitro microscopic analysis revealed the presence of cmHsp70.1-AuNPs in the cytosol of tumor cell lines after internalization via the endo-lysosomal pathway. In preclinical models, the biodistribution as well as the intratumoral enrichment of AuNPs were examined 24 h after i.v. injection in tumor-bearing mice. In parallel to spectral CT analysis, histological analysis confirmed the presence of AuNPs within tumor cells. In contrast to control AuNPs, a significant enrichment of cmHsp70.1-AuNPs has been detected selectively inside tumor cells in different tumor mouse models. Furthermore, a machine-learning approach was developed to analyze AuNP accumulations in tumor tissues and organs. In summary, utilizing mHsp70 on tumor cells as a target for the guidance of cmHsp70.1-AuNPs facilitates an enrichment and uniform distribution of nanoparticles in mHsp70-expressing tumor cells that enables various microscopic imaging techniques and spectral-CT-based tumor delineation in vivo. In this paper we report a method to determine the soluble solids content (SSC) of 'Rocha' pear (Pyrus communis L. cv. Rocha) based on their short-wave NIR reflectance spectra (500–1100 nm) measured in conditions similar to those found in packinghouse fruit sorting facilities. We obtained 3300 reflectance spectra from pears acquired from different lots, producers and with diverse storage times and ripening stages. The macroscopic properties of the pears, such as size, temperature and SSC were measured under controlled laboratory conditions. For the spectral analysis, we implemented a computational pipeline that incorporates multiple pre-processing techniques including a feature selection procedure, various multivariate regression models and three different validation strategies. This benchmark allowed us to find the best model/preproccesing procedure for SSC prediction from our data. From the several calibration models tested, we have found that Support Vector Machines provides the best predictions metrics with an RMSEP of around 0.82 ∘ Brix and 1.09 ∘ Brix for internal and external validation strategies respectively. The latter validation was implemented to assess the prediction accuracy of this calibration method under more 'real world-like' conditions. We also show that incorporating information about the fruit temperature and size to the calibration models improves SSC predictability. In this study, we presented the concept and implementation of a fully functional system for the recognition of bi-heterocyclic compounds. We have conducted research into the application of machine learning methods to correctly recognize compounds based on THz spectra, and we have described the process of selecting optimal parameters for the kernel support vector machine (KSVM) with an additional 'unknown' class. The chemical compounds used in the study contain a target molecule, used in pharmacy to combat inflammatory states formed in living organisms. Ready-made medical products with similar properties are commonly referred to as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) once authorised on the pharmaceutical market. It was crucial to clearly determine whether the tested sample is a chemical compound known to researchers or is a completely new structure which should be additionally tested using other spectrometric methods. Our approach allows us to achieve 100% accuracy of the classification of the tested chemical compounds in the time of several milliseconds counted for 30 samples of the test set. It fits perfectly into the concept of rapid recognition of bi-heterocyclic compounds without the need to analyse the percentage composition of compound components, assuming that the sample is classified in a known group. As a fundamental and profound task in remote sensing, change detection from very-high-resolution (VHR) images plays a vital role in a wide range of applications and attracts considerable attention. Current methods generally focus on the research of simultaneously modeling and discriminating the changed and unchanged features. In practice, for bi-temporal VHR optical remote sensing images, the temporal spectral variability tends to exist in all bands throughout the entire paired images, making it difficult to distinguish none-changes and changes with a single model. In this paper, motivated by this observation, we propose a novel hybrid end-to-end framework named dual learning-based Siamese framework (DLSF) for change detection. The framework comprises two parallel streams which are dual learning-based domain transfer and Siamese-based change decision. The former stream is aimed at reducing the domain differences of two paired images and retaining the intrinsic information by translating them into each other's domain. While the latter stream is aimed at learning a decision strategy to decide the changes in two domains, respectively. By training our proposed framework with certain change map references, this method learns a cross-domain translation in order to suppress the differences of unchanged regions and highlight the differences of changed regions in two domains, respectively, then focus on the detection of changed regions. To the best of our knowledge, the idea of incorporating dual learning framework and Siamese network for change detection is novel. Processing and applications of hyperspectral images (HSI) are limited by the noise component. This paper establishes an HSI denoising algorithm by applying dictionary learning and sparse coding theory, which is extended into the spectral domain. First, the HSI noise model under additive noise assumption was studied. Considering the spectral information of HSI data, a novel dictionary learning method based on an online method is proposed to train the spectral dictionary for denoising. With the spatial–contextual information in the noisy HSI exploited as a priori knowledge, the total variation regularizer is introduced to perform the sparse coding. Finally, sparse reconstruction is implemented to produce the denoised HSI. The performance of the proposed approach is better than the existing algorithms. The experiments illustrate that the denoising result obtained by the proposed algorithm is at least 1 dB better than that of the comparison algorithms. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an important analysis technique with applications in many industrial branches and fields of scientific research. Nowadays, the advantages of LIBS are impaired by the main drawback in the interpretation of obtained spectra and identification of observed spectral lines. This procedure is highly time-consuming since it is essentially based on the comparison of lines present in the spectrum with the literature database. This paper proposes the use of various computational intelligence methods to develop a reliable and fast classification of quasi-destructively acquired LIBS spectra into a set of predefined classes. We focus on a specific problem of classification of paper-ink samples into 30 separate, predefined classes. For each of 30 classes (10 pens of each of 5 ink types combined with 10 sheets of 5 paper types plus empty pages), 100 LIBS spectra are collected. Four variants of preprocessing, seven classifiers (decision trees, random forest, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, probabilistic neural network, multi-layer perceptron, and generalized regression neural network), 5-fold stratified cross-validation, and a test on an independent set (for methods evaluation) scenarios are employed. Our developed system yielded an accuracy of 99.08%, obtained using the random forest classifier. Our results clearly demonstrates that machine learning methods can be used to identify the paper-ink samples based on LIBS reliably at a faster rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
