Capacities of joints with laterally loaded nails may be predicted using "European yield" type models (EYMs) with various levels of complexity. EYMs presume that a nail and the wood on which it bears exhibit a rigid–plastic stress–strain response. Consideration is given in this paper to the "original" model published by K.W. Johansen in 1949, an empirical approximation proposed by L.R.J. Whale and coworkers in 1987, and a curtailed and "simplified" model proposed by H.J. Blass and coworkers in 1999. Predictions from the various EYMs are compared with experimentally determined ultimate capacities of single and double shear joints. Experiments covered a range of combinations of member thicknesses and two nail sizes. The impact of modelling assumptions is illustrated in the context of the Canadian timber design code. Suggestions are made regarding the necessary level of complexity for nailed joint models used in design.Key words: timber, joints, nails, yield model, ultimate limit state, design.Les capacités de joints avec des clous chargés latéralement peuvent être prédites par les modèles de type « rupture européenne » (MRE) avec des niveaux de complexité variés. Les MRE présument que le clou et le bois qu'il supporte produisent une réponse effort–déformation rigide et plastique. Une attention est donnée dans cet article au modèle original présenté par K.W. Johansen en 1949, à une approximation empirique proposée par L.R.J. Whale et collègues en 1987 et à un modèle réduit et simplifié proposé par H.J. Blass et collègues en 1999. Les prédictions des différents MRE sont comparées avec des capacités ultimes de joints en cisaillement simples et doubles déterminées expérimentalement. Les expériences ont couvert un éventail de combinaisons d'épaisseurs de membres et deux tailles de clous. L'impact des hypothèses de modélisation est illustré dans le context du code canadien de conception de structures en bois. This paper presents the results of in situ quasi-static tests on a full-scale wood floor diaphragm in a two-storey woodframe house. The main objective of the study was to investigate the in-plane flexibility/rigidity of the diaphragm. Fourteen different diaphragm and structural configurations were investigated. The main parameters considered in the study included the nail schedule, panel-edge blocking, sub-floor adhesive, perpendicular walls above and below the diaphragm, and wall finish materials. The results indicated that panel-edge blocking increased significantly the diaphragm shear stiffness, particularly for diaphragms without sub-floor adhesive. Also, the presence of perpendicular walls acting as additional chord members caused a significant increase in the flexural stiffness of the diaphragm. The design procedure included in the Uniform Building Code (UBC) to compute in-plane diaphragm deformations was assessed by comparing its predictions with the experimental results. The UBC predictions agreed well with the experimental results for some configurations, but the correlation was poor for others.Key words: diaphragms, floor, tests, wood, wooden structures.Cet article présente les résultats d'essais quasis statiques in-situ entrepris sur un diaphragme de plancher en bois à grande échelle dans une maison à ossature de bois à deux étages. L'objectif principal de cette étude a été d'examiner la flexibilité/rigidité du diaphragme en plan. Quatorze configurations différentes de diaphragmes et de structures ont été étudiées. Les paramètres principaux considérés dans cette étude incluent la stratégie de clouage, le blocage du bord des panneaux, l'adhésif de sous-plancher, les murs perpendiculaires au-dessus et en dessous du diaphragme, et le matériel de finition des murs. Les résultats ont démontré que le blocage du bord des panneaux a augmenté la rigidité en cisaillement de façon significative, particulièrement pour les diaphragmes sans adhésif de sous-plancher. De plus, la présence de murs perpendiculaires agissants comme membres de ferme additionnels a causé une augmentation significative de la rigidité en flexion du diaphragme. La procédure de conception incluse dans le « Uniform Building Code (UBC) » afin de calculer les déformations en plan du diaphragme a été évaluée en comparant ses prédictions aux résultats expérimentaux.
