We investigate the position and intensity changes of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) over Asia (50°E−135°E) relative to the preindustrial period annually and seasonally during the Last Interglacial (LIG), Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and mid‐Holocene (MH) using available models from phases 3 and 4 of the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project. The multi‐model mean shows that the June–July–August ITCZ variations generally dominate the annual changes. The Asian ITCZ shifts northward over western Asia and southward over the eastern side in both the LIG and MH, and the opposite occurs in the LGM. Its intensity varies with longitude similarly for the LIG and MH and generally weakens in the LGM. Precipitation changes associated directly with ITCZ indices are primarily caused by the dynamic term in the LIG and MH, while both dynamic and thermodynamic terms play roles in the LGM, with major contributions from the convergence components. Plain Language Summary: As an intense rain belt, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) has an important influence on the regional climate, particularly over Asia. However, its future and past behaviors remain unclear. Based on multi‐model experiments, we investigate Asian ITCZ changes in location and intensity during the past three typical periods: the interglacial periods of the Last Interglacial and the mid‐Holocene and the glacial period of the Last Glacial Maximum. The Asian ITCZ overall strengthens and regionally moves northward over the western part and southward over the eastern part during the two interglacial periods relative to its preindustrial state, which are generally opposite to the position and intensity changes in the glacial period. These ITCZ changes are directly caused by uneven precipitation changes, which are dominated by atmospheric circulation changes during interglacial periods and additionally contributed from water vapor content changes during glacial periods, primarily through the vertical motion of air. This paper explores the resizing, reshaping and connectivity of islands by examining ongoing relations between land and sea in the context of the Channel Island of Guernsey. Ideas of materiality, temporality and vertical depth are employed to explore how contemporary tides and past sea‐level change impact island–island connections, and island–mainland connections between Guernsey and France. By focusing on the littoral zone as a space of encounter between land and sea, the paper explores some of the processes that challenge the notion of an island having fixed edges, emphasising the island's shape and size as always in flux. The paper then explores how tides alternatively reveal and hide material structures such as rocks and causeways, making the underwater scape temporally visible and differently accessible as an extension of land. It enables connections to be made and remade. This is demonstrated through the example of Guernsey and the tidal island of Lihou. The paper subsequently considers these ideas in the context of Quaternary sea‐level change. The land known as Guernsey alternated between literal island surrounded by water, and a steep‐sided plateau on the Normanno‐Breton plain, coinciding with interglacials and glacials. This connection is referred to as geologic. I argue that by acknowledging Guernsey's former visible connection with France, lack of contemporary visibility in the underwater scape does not render this a disconnection. Rather, the geologic, as further evidenced in the contemporary natural and built environment of Guernsey, continues through an underwater scape. It reappears in other Channal Islands and France, demonstrating ongoing connections at a land–sea–geologic interface. The paper argues for geology as a form of vertical depth. Pliocene global temperatures periodically exceeded modern levels, offering insights into ice sheet sensitivity to warm climates. Ice-proximal geologic records from this period provide crucial but limited glimpses of Antarctic Ice Sheet behavior. We use an ice sheet model driven by climate model snapshots to simulate transient glacial cyclicity from 4.5 to 2.6 Ma, providing spatial and temporal context for geologic records. By evaluating model simulations against a comprehensive synthesis of geologic data, we translate the intermittent geologic record into a continuous reconstruction of Antarctic sea level contributions, revealing a dynamic ice sheet that contributed up to 25 m of glacial-interglacial sea level change. Model grounding line behavior across all major Antarctic catchments exhibits an extended period of receded ice during the mid-Pliocene, coincident with proximal geologic data around Antarctica but earlier than peak warmth in the Northern Hemisphere. Marine ice sheet collapse is triggered with 1.5 °C model subsurface ocean warming. Geologically validated ice-sheet model reconstructions show large-scale fluctuations between glacial and interglacial periods, suggesting that the Antarctic Ice Sheet is highly sensitive to past and future warm conditions. During the glacial cycles of the past 800 000 years, Eurasia and North America were periodically covered by large ice sheets, causing up to 100 m of sea-level change. While Late Pleistocene glacial cycles typically lasted 80 000–120 000 years, the termination phases were completed in only 10 000 years. During these glacial terminations, the North American and Eurasian ice sheets retreated, which created large proglacial lakes in front of the ice-sheet margin. Proglacial lakes accelerate deglaciation as they facilitate the formation of ice shelves at the southern margins of the North American and Eurasian ice sheets. These ice shelves are characterized by basal melting, low surface elevations, and negligible friction at the base. Here, we use an ice-sheet model to quantify the (combined) effects of proglacial lakes on Late Pleistocene glacial terminations by examining their interplay with glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) and basal sliding. We find that proglacial lakes accelerate the deglaciation of ice sheets mainly because there is an absence of basal friction underneath ice shelves. If friction underneath grounded ice is applied to floating ice, full deglaciation is postponed by a few millennia, resulting in more ice remaining during interglacial periods and no extensive ice shelves forming. Additionally, the large uncertainty in melt rates underneath lacustrine ice shelves translates to an uncertainty in the timing of the termination of up to a millennium. Proglacial lakes are created by depressions in the landscape that remain after an ice sheet has retreated. The depth, size, and timing of proglacial lakes depend on the rate of bedrock rebound. We find that if bedrock rebounds within a few centuries (rather than a few millennia), the mass loss rate of the ice sheet is substantially reduced. This is because fast bedrock rebound prevents the formation of extensive proglacial lakes. Additionally, a decrease in ice thickness is partly compensated for by faster bedrock rebound, resulting in a higher surface elevation; lower temperatures; and a higher surface mass balance, which delays deglaciation. We find that a very long bedrock relaxation time does not substantially affect terminations, but it may lead to a delayed onset of the next glacial period. The mountains in the Atlantic Forest domain are environments that harbor a high biodiversity, including species adapted to colder climates that were probably influenced by the climatic variations of the Pleistocene. To understand the phylogeographic pattern and assess the taxonomic boundaries between two sister montane species, a genomic study of the butterflies Actinote mantiqueira and A. alalia (Nymphalidae: Acraeini) was conducted. Analyses based on partial sequences of the mitochondrial gene COI (barcode region) failed to recover any phylogenetic or genetic structure discriminating the two species or sampling localities. However, single nucleotide polymorphisms gathered using Genotyping‐by‐Sequencing provided a strong isolation pattern in all analyses (genetic distance, phylogenetic hypothesis, clustering analyses, and FST statistics) which is consistent with morphology, separating all individuals of A. alalia from all populations of A. mantiqueira. The three sampled mountain ranges where A. mantiqueira populations occur—Serra do Mar, Serra da Mantiqueira, and Poços de Caldas Plateau—were identified as three isolated clusters. Paleoclimate simulations indicate that both species' distributions changed according to climatic oscillations in the Pleistocene period, with the two species potentially occurring in areas of lower altitude during glacial periods when compared to the interglacial periods (as the present). Besides, a potential path between their distribution through the Serra do Mar Mountain range was inferred. Therefore, the Pleistocene climatic fluctuation had a significant impact on the speciation process between A. alalia and A. mantiqueira, which was brought on by isolation at different mountain summits during interglacial periods, as shown by the modeled historical distribution and the observed genetic structure. Aim: Within the intensively‐studied, well‐documented latitudinal diversity gradient, the deep‐sea biodiversity of the present‐day Norwegian Sea stands out with its notably low diversity, constituting a steep latitudinal diversity gradient in the North Atlantic. The reason behind this has long been a topic of debate and speculation. Most prominently, it is explained by the deep‐sea glacial disturbance hypothesis, which states that harsh environmental glacial conditions negatively impacted Norwegian Sea diversities, which have not yet fully recovered. Our aim is to empirically test this hypothesis. Specific research questions are: (1) Has deep‐sea biodiversity been lower during glacials than during interglacials? (2) Was there any faunal shift at the Mid‐Brunhes Event (MBE) when the mode of glacial–interglacial climatic change was altered? Location: Norwegian Sea, deep sea (1819–2800 m), coring sites MD992277, PS1243, and M23352. Time period: 620.7–1.4 ka (Middle Pleistocene–Late Holocene). Taxa studied: Ostracoda (Crustacea). Methods: We empirically test the deep‐sea glacial disturbance hypothesis by investigating whether diversity in glacial periods is consistently lower than diversity in interglacial periods. Additionally, we apply comparative analyses to determine a potential faunal shift at the MBE, a Pleistocene event describing a fundamental shift in global climate. Results: The deep Norwegian Sea diversity was not lower during glacial periods compared to interglacial periods. Holocene diversity was exceedingly lower than that of the last glacial period. Faunal composition changed substantially between pre‐ and post‐MBE. Main conclusions: These results reject the glacial disturbance hypothesis, since the low glacial diversity is the important precondition here. The present‐day‐style deep Norwegian Sea ecosystem was established by the MBE, more specifically by MBE‐induced changes in global climate, which has led to more dynamic post‐MBE conditions. The glacial‐interglacial cycle of elements and the linkage with biological production is very important. Nonetheless, records on incorporation of elements into diatom frustules are very poor in the Southern Ocean where diatom productivity is very high. As a result, there is a big gap in our understanding of elemental cycles in association with biological production and the controlling mechanisms. Here, we documented concentrations of major, trace, and rare earth elements of diatom frustules in two cores collected from the Southern Ocean since the Last Glacial Maximum to understand changes of incorporation of these elements into diatom frustules and to investigate mechanisms for changing incorporation. We found that there are three types of glacial‐interglacial variation patterns. Most elements showed increased (decreased) concentrations during the glacial period (interglacial) with decreased (increased) diatom production in the surface water following the variation pattern of magnetic susceptibility, whereas P, Ge, and Sb showed the opposite trend following the variation pattern of biogenic opal. Li, Ni, Ag, W, U, and I showed no clear glacial‐interglacial variation pattern. These different variation patterns imply that elemental incorporation into diatom frustules are also different according to elements. Our results revealed that biologically mediated removal of most elements from surface water to deep‐sea is comparable between glacial (low diatom production with high elements assimilation) and interglacial (high diatom production with low elements assimilation) periods in the Southern Ocean. However, more removal of P, Sb, and Ge in the surface water by diatoms occurs during interglacial periods in the Southern Ocean. The Agulhas Return Current (ARC) transports warm tropical and subtropical waters eastward into the southern Indian Ocean. It plays a crucial role in the oceanographic connections between the Indian, Atlantic, and Southern oceans. Modern oceanographic observations show that the latitudinal position of the ARC varies interannually. However, its historical positional variations remain poorly understood. Calcareous nannofossils can be a good indicator of ancient current migration, although their record in the Southwest Indian Ocean is poorly studied. This research aims to understand the characteristics and downcore variation of the calcareous nannofossil assemblages and trace the record of the ancient ARC. To achieve these goals, this study analyzed pelagic sediments of multicore 34IV-SWIR-S021MC03, 34IV-SWIR-S032MC04, and 34IV-SWIR-S040MC05 from the Southwest Indian Ocean. A total of 13 nannofossil species have been identified. The assemblages belong to the subtropical convergence zone regime. They are characterized by warm and cold water species, dominated by Emiliania huxleyi, Calcidiscus leptoporus, Gephyrocapsa muellerae, and Florisphaera profunda. According to the AMS[sup 14]C age model and phytoplankton ecological signatures, this study establishes a calcareous nannofossil indicator to trace the migration of the ancient ARC during the last 40 kyr. The result shows three periods of migration: 40-22 kyr, the ancient ARC was in the far north and was moving southward; 22-14 kyr, a transitional period, the ancient ARC was moving northward; 14-3 kyr, the ARC was moving southward. This further suggests that the migration of the ancient ARC is more complex than the two recognized phases, and there were essential turning points around the last glacial maximum period. It also acknowledges that the ancient ARC is sensitive to interglacial periods and can be influenced simultaneously by the Southern Hemisphere monsoon and westerly winds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the glacial history of the Makarov Basin (western Arctic Ocean) during the last ∼1.1 Myr, with sediment provenances using the newly refined chronostratigraphy of core ARA03B‐41GC02. According to the principal component analysis of the bulk mineral assemblages, felsic minerals were dominant, and their ratios (K‐feldspar/plagioclase and quartz/feldspars) indicated that sediment supply to the Makarov Basin was mainly from the Siberian margin and partly from northern North America, including the Canadian Arctic. However, their occurrence did not vary significantly between interglacials and glacials due to the mixed sources. In contrast, clinopyroxene and dolomite indicated specific sediment origins from the eastern Siberian margin and northern North America, respectively. The clinopyroxene content followed an eccentricity cycle (∼100‐Kyr) during the early to middle Pleistocene, suggesting that the eustatic sea level changes may have influenced its input from the eastern Siberian margin. The dolomite, transported primarily by icebergs from the Arctic sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) in northern North America, has also followed the same cycle since the early Pleistocene. Thus, the mineralogical signals highlight that sediment origins and transport processes in the Makarov Basin were related to ice sheet evolution at the eccentricity cycle. In addition, dolomite deposition in the Makarov Basin began by the early Pleistocene (∼790 ka), ∼150 ka earlier than in previous North Atlantic records (∼640 ka), indicating the earlier LIS calving in the Arctic sector than in the Atlantic sector. Evolutionary processes behind lineage divergence often involve multidimensional differentiation. However, in the context of recent divergences, the signals exhibited by each dimension may not converge. In such scenarios, incomplete lineage sorting, gene flow, and scarce phenotypic differentiation are pervasive. Here, we integrated genomic (RAD loci of 90 individuals), phenotypic (linear and geometric traits of 823 and 411 individuals, respectively), spatial, and climatic data to reconstruct the evolutionary history of a speciation continuum of liolaemid lizards (Liolaemus kingii group). Specifically, we (a) inferred the population structure of the group and contrasted it with the phenotypic variability; (b) assessed the role of postdivergence gene flow in shaping phylogeographic and phenotypic patterns; and (c) explored ecogeographic drivers of diversification across time and space. We inferred eight genomic clusters exhibiting leaky genetic borders coincident with geographic transitions. We also found evidence of postdivergence gene flow resulting in transgressive phenotypic evolution in one species. Predicted ancestral niches unveiled suitable areas in southern and eastern Patagonia during glacial and interglacial periods. Our study underscores integrating different data and model-based approaches to determine the underlying causes of diversification, a challenge faced in the study of recently diverged groups. The freshwater discharge from melting ice sheets in the deglaciation or glaciation is prone to anomalies in ocean-atmosphere transport between different latitudes, which can lead to a series of abrupt millennial-scale climate events, either obvious or not, such as the Younger Dryas (YD) events and YD-like events. Marine Isotope Stage 11c (MIS 11c) serves as one of the best references for the current Holocene, and the studies of possible YD-like events and their triggering mechanisms during Holocene are conducive to the understanding of the occurrence pattern of extreme climate events. In this paper, the results of the study on the J33 δ18O sequence records of stalagmites in Jinfo Cave, Chongqing, are shown: (1) Stalagmites in the Asian monsoon climate zone reveal a millennial-scale weak monsoon event that occurred around 410 ka BP prior to the Glacial Maximum of MIS 11 interglacial period. (2) Both the 410 ka weak monsoon event and the YD event occurred during the gradual strengthening of the monsoon and ascending branch of summer insolation in the Northern Hemisphere prior to the Glacial Maximum of interglacial period. This was also a time when Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) disturbance occurred. The duration, internal structure, and pattern of the events were similar, with differences in the change magnitude and ice volume conditions. (3) The weak monsoon event that occurred in 410 ka BP was primarily influenced by the combined effects of insolation and AMOC. This event was characterized by a sustained warming process that accelerated the melting of the Greenland ice sheet, leading to the destabilization of this ice sheet. The continuous flowing of freshwater into the North Atlantic resulted in a short-lived AMOC oscillation. The weakening of the AMOC resulted in a cold anomaly over the North Atlantic. As a result of atmospheric telecorrelation, the weaker AMOC led to a weaker Asian Summer Monsoon (ASM). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the microscopic variability of impurities in glacier ice on a quantitative level has importance for assessing the preservation of paleoclimatic signals and enables the study of macroscopic deformational as well as dielectric ice properties. Two‐dimensional imaging via laser‐ablation‐inductively‐coupled‐plasma‐mass‐spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) can provide key insight into the localization of impurities in the ice. So far, these findings are mostly qualitative and gaining quantitative insights remains challenging. Recent advances in LA‐ICP‐MS high‐resolution imaging now allow ice grains and grain boundaries to be resolved individually. These resolutions require new adequate quantification strategies and, consequently, accurate calibration with matrix‐matched standards. Here, we present three different quantification methods, which provide a high level of homogeneity at the scale of a few tens of microns and are dedicated to imaging applications of ice cores. One of the proposed methods has a second application, offering laboratory experiments to investigate the displacement of impurities by grain growth, with important future potential to study ice‐impurity interactions. Standards were analyzed to enable absolute quantification of impurities in selected ice core samples. Calibrated LA‐ICP‐MS maps indicate similar spatial distributions of impurities in all samples, while impurity levels vary distinctly: Higher concentrations were detected in glacial periods and Greenland, and lower levels in interglacial periods and samples from central Antarctica. These results are consistent with ranges from complementary meltwater analysis. Further comparison with cm‐scale melting techniques calls for a more sophisticated understanding of the ice chemistry across spatial scales, to which calibrated LA‐ICP‐MS maps now contribute quantitatively. Plain Language Summary: Compared to the large amount of information relating to paleoclimate signals reconstructed from cm‐scale impurity measurements on ice cores, knowledge about the spatial variability of impurities at the micro‐scale is extremely sparse—and becomes even more rare once quantitative datasets are concerned. However, there is an increasing demand for quantitative data for assessing the preservation of paleoclimatic signals and for the study of macroscopic deformational as well as dielectric ice properties in ice flow modeling and remote sensing. Two‐dimensional imaging via laser‐ablation‐inductively‐coupled‐plasma‐mass‐spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) has shown great potential in this context, but so far, gaining reliable quantitative results for micro‐scale imaging has not been possible. Here, we present new quantification strategies that finally allow accurate calibration using ice standards. We carefully discuss the pros and cons of each method, apply the calibration to different samples from Greenland and Antarctica, and deliver the first calibrated LA‐ICP‐MS impurity maps at 40 μm resolution. Our results are consistent with bulk measurements performed on melted samples. The calibrated LA‐ICP‐MS maps will be essential for further comparison with bulk meltwater analysis, which may ultimately deliver an improved understanding of paleoclimate signals stored in deep ice. The California Current system (CCS) hosts one of the largest oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) in the world: the eastern North Pacific (ENP) OMZ, which is dissociated into subtropical and tropical regions (i.e. the ESTNP and ETNP). In the modern ENP OMZ, bioavailable nitrogen (N) is lost via denitrification and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox). Even so, paleo-reconstructions of N loss have focused solely on denitrification. Fluctuations in bulk sedimentary δ15 N over glacial–interglacial cycles have been interpreted to reflect variations in denitrification rates in response to ETNP OMZ intensity changes. This δ15 N signal is thought to be transported northwards to the ESTNP OMZ. Here, we present the first CCS sedimentary record of ladderane lipids, biomarkers for anammox, located within the ESTNP OMZ (32° N, 118° W). Over the last two glacial terminations (∼ 160 kyr cal BP), ladderane concentrations were analysed in combination with the index of ladderanes with five cyclobutane moieties (NL 5), short-chain (SC) ladderane degradation products, and productivity proxies. This shows that (1) ladderanes were derived from anammox bacteria living within the ESTNP OMZ water column; (2) ladderanes were continuously present, with relatively high concentrations during both glacial and interglacial periods, showcasing that the ESTNP OMZ must have retained an anoxic core in which N loss occurred; and (3) anammox abundance appears to have been driven by both organic matter (OM) remineralization and advection changes, which regulated nutrient and oxygen levels. Our study shows that anammox was an important feature in the CCS, and it provides a more holistic picture of N-loss dynamics and the development of the ESTNP OMZ over glacial–interglacial cycles. Lastly, ladderanes and their SC products were also detected in 160–500 kyr cal BP sediments (15.7–37.5 m b.s.f., metres below sea floor; analysed at a low temporal resolution), highlighting their potential as anammox biomarkers in relatively deeper buried sediments for future studies. Eriophyoid mites are among the most species‐rich superfamilies (Eriophyoidea) in the Acari, consisting of over 5000 named species. Although they exhibit a geographically uneven worldwide distribution, their regional spatiotemporal evolutionary patterns remain largely unknown. Here, we compiled a data set including 3058 occurrence records assigned into 1203 species in China. We found that eriophyoid mite species richness is higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest of China, coinciding with the 500‐mm annual precipitation isoline. Using fragments of two mitochondrial genes (COI, 12S rRNA) and two nuclear genes (18S rRNA, 28S rRNA) of 304 eriophyoid mite species, we constructed a regional dated phylogenetic tree in China. Our spatiotemporal analysis revealed that mountains in eastern and southern China had high eriophyoid mite species richness and phylogenetic clustering, possessing both ancient and young mite lineages. Species distribution modelling (SDM) results showed that the predicted suitable area of eriophyoid mites slightly expanded from the last inter‐glacial period to the last glacial maximum period. In comparison with the current SDM, a significantly larger distribution range was observed in future scenarios. These findings suggest that mountains in eastern and southern China acted as not only cradles—recent rapid speciation, but also museums—centre of gradual accumulation and preservation and provide insights into monitoring and conserving eriophyoid mites. The southern three-banded armadillo, Tolypeutes matacus , is one of the most representative species of the South American Chaco region. The susceptibility of this species to climatic changes and its good number of paleontological records has led to the study of their range dynamics for untangling the effects of Quaternary oscillations. These studies yielded contradictory results, suggesting expansion processes under opposite conditions: some during glacial periods and others during interglacial periods. Here, we assess the population structure of T. matacus in Argentina based on mitochondrial genes, and estimate demographic and spatial dynamics that contribute to unveiling the evolutionary process that moulded its biogeography. We found no clear phylogeographical breaks, although there were differences in the composition and frequency of haplotypes between the northern and southern localities studied. Demographic inferences indicate that the species has undergone population and range expansion processes. The higher diversity found in the north and the spatial diffusion analysis allow us to infer a north–south direction of this expansive process. Our results yield essential evidence for disentangling the evolution of this Chacoan species linked with Quaternary climates and provide genetic information about its populations that should be taken into account for the conservation of this threatened mammal. To extract climatically relevant chemical signals from the deepest, oldest Antarctic ice, we must first understand the degree to which chemical ions diffuse within solid ice. Volcanic sulfate peaks are the ideal target for such an investigation because they are high amplitude, short duration (~3 years) events with a quasi-uniform structure. Here we present analysis of the EPICA Dome C sulfate record over the last 450 kyr. We identify volcanic peaks and isolate them from the non-sea salt sulfate background to reveal the effects of diffusion: amplitude damping and broadening of peaks in the time domain with increasing depth/age. Sulfate peak shape is also altered by the thinning of ice layers with depth that results from ice flow. Both processes must be simulated to derive effective diffusion rates. This is achieved by running a forward model to diffuse idealised sulfate peaks at different rates while also accounting for ice thinning. Our simulations suggest a median effective diffusion rate of sulfate ions of 2.4 ± 1.7 x 10-7 m2 yr-1 in the Holocene ice, slightly faster than suggested by previous work. The effective diffusion rate observed in deeper ice is significantly lower, and the Holocene ice shows the highest rate of the last 450 kyr. Beyond the Holocene, there is no systematic difference between the effective diffusion rates of glacial and interglacial periods despite variations in soluble ions concentrations, dust loading and ice grain radii. Effective diffusion rates for 40 to 200 ka are relatively constant, on the order of 1 x 10-8 m2 yr-1. Our results suggests that the diffusion of sulfate ions within volcanic peaks is relatively fast initially, perhaps through the inter-connected vein network, but slows significantly after 40 kyr. In the absence of clear evidence for a controlling environmental factor on sulfate diffusivity with depth/age, we hypothesize that the rapid decrease in diffusion rate from the time of deposition to ice of 50 ka age may be due to a switch in the mechanism of diffusion resulting from the changing location of sulfate ions within the ice microstructure. The aim of the study is the reconstruction of paleoclimatic patterns in the formation of the Chumbur-Kosa (MIS-17.MIS-1) loess–soil sequences and the assessment of the possibility of using phytolithic analysis to reconstruct the vegetation cover in the interglacial and glacial periods of the Pleistocene. Mean annual precipitation was calculated using the magnetic susceptibility. It has been established that in the Pleistocene there was a directed climate change towards aridization, in which the amount of precipitation during the interglacial periods decreased from 600 to 550 mm/year, and during the glacial periods it did not exceed 200–250 mm/year. Aridization of the climate led to xerophytization of plant communities, a decrease in bioproductivity and landscape diversity. In the warm periods of the Pleistocene, meadow–forb associations prevailed, which were replaced by steppe associations at the onset of the glacial stage. Trough mouth fans (TMFs) are major submarine depocentres that form in front of ice streams advancing onto the continental shelf, and they provide extensive records of past glaciations and ice-sheet dynamics. However, early research about TMFs was conducted using primarily 2D seismic data, which limits the insights on the deposit's geometries and internal structures and more recent studies using 3D data have focused on the general depositional history of TMFs. Here, we assess the spatial and temporal changes of the glacio-marine landforms and deposits throughout the last glacial-interglacial cycle (Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 to 1, ∼130 ka to present) recorded in a >550 m thick progradational sequence. We use 3D reflection seismic data with significant vertical resolution (up to 2 m) imaging over 14000 km2 from the uppermost North Sea Fan (NSF) to document the seismic stratigraphy and sedimentary processes, by combining horizon picking and geomorphological analyses. The studied interval comprises five mappable units, four on the slope and one on the shelf, spanning from the modern seabed down to the top of the Tampen Slide (∼130 ka). Five different channel types (here included slide scars), as well as contourite and plumite packages are described based on their seismic facies, morphology, geometry, and stratigraphical position. We propose that contour currents are responsible for sediment delivery after the Tampen Slide deposition during the interglacial period before the onset of the Last Glacial Maximum, when high meltwater influx from the shelf produced turbidites. Sedimentation became debris-flow-dominated towards the end of the period of shelf-edge glaciation. The deglacial interval is characterized by the deposition of plumites on the slope. On the shelf, subglacial tills are deposited during both glacial and deglacial periods. We calculate an average sedimentation rate of <1 m/kyr during the interglacial (MIS 5-3), and around 50–65 m/kyr during the glacial and deglacial periods (MIS2-early MIS1). Authigenic phases in lake sediments hold the potential to record changes in the isotope compositions of past lake water, potentially yielding valuable information on secular changes in continental weathering patterns and rates, including over past glacial cycles. Here, different leaching approaches are investigated with the aim of extracting Sr, Nd, Pb, and Be hosted in authigenic Fe-Mn (oxy)hydroxide sediment phases for precise isotope measurements. Elemental Al/Mn, Ca/Mn, and P/Mn ratios obtained via a mild reductive leach agree well with the composition of marine authigenic Fe-Mn phases. For core top sediments, leached Sr isotope compositions obtained with this leach agree well with the composition of lake water. The Be and Nd isotope compositions of core top leachates are consistent with the spatial variability observed in the water column. Due to high concentrations in Fe-Mn phases, leachate compositions are dominated by authigenic Be, Sr, Nd, and Pb, even in cases when as much as 40% of leached phases (by mass) are non-authigenic. These lines of evidence suggest that the mild reductive leach successfully extracts the modern lake isotope composition from modern sediments in terms of the isotope systems investigated. We further show that the leaching method is also reliable for older sediments (<340 ka): leached paleo-Sr isotope compositions are consistent between the current and previous interglacial periods, as well as for glacial periods. This suggests that reconstructed water isotope compositions are not affected by early diagenetic processes, instead reflecting environmental factors around the lake that determine the composition of weathering fluxes. Although more difficult to assess for Be, Nd, and Pb due to the heterogeneity of modern lake water, the data we present indicate the overall robustness of the leaching approach. These promising results open up lakes as archives for paleo-weathering reconstructions. Given that marine reconstructions face some important limitations (e.g., integration of basin-wide changes in weathering processes, long residence times for Sr, etc.Fe), lake records provide an avenue to improve our understanding of changes in regional weathering processes over glacial-interglacial timescales. • Sediments in the eastern Arabian Sea are mainly derived from Indus River and Deccan Plateau. • Terrestrial sources are characterized by a clear glacial-interglacial cyclical change. • Sea level controlled orbital-scale terrestrial inputs and sources in the eastern Arabian Sea. Although the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau has led to strong land-sea interactions, the characteristics of sediment transport and their controlling factors in typical marine areas in the northern Indian Ocean since the Quaternary are not clear. This work aimed to reconstruct the pattern of change in the sources of sediments since the Marine Isotope Stage 9 (MIS 9) period and to explore the mechanism of their response to changes in the marine environment in the Arabian Sea. To this end, a comprehensive multi-indicator study of the chronology and geochemical elements was carried out in core AS05-7 from the eastern Arabian Sea. Major trace element factor analysis and rare earth element (La/Yb) N -δEu N mapping suggested that sediments in the eastern Arabian Sea were mainly derived from terrestrial inputs from the Indus River and the Deccan Plateau. The sediments showed a clear glacial-interglacial cycle of change, with the contribution of the Indus River increasing during the interglacial period and that of the Deccan Plateau increasing during the glacial period. On average, the Indus River and Deccan Plateau contributed 71 % and 29 %, respectively, to the total amount of sediment. Indicators such as mass accumulation rate and Ca/Ti showed that the inputs from the terrestrial sources showed clear glacial-interglacial characteristics, with inputs during the glacial period being higher than those during the interglacial period. The lowering of the sea level during the glacial period led to an increase in the exposed area of the shelf, the shifting of deposition centers closer to the core, an increase in the rate of mass accumulation, and an increase in riverine inputs to the sea when clastic sediments from the Deccan Plateau increased. The elevation of the sea level during the interglacial period led to the inundation of the shelf, the shifting of deposition centers away from the core, a decrease in the rate of mass accumulation, and a reduction in riverine inputs to the sea when detrital sediments from the Deccan Plateau decreased. Changes in terrestrial inputs and sources revealed the orbital-scale control of sea-level change on sedimentary processes in the Arabian Sea and provided direct evidence for the "source-sink" model of sedimentation in the tropical Indian Ocean. Palynological analysis of sediments from El'gygytgyn Lake document vegetation changes in the Eastern Arctic from early marine isotope stage (MIS) 74 to late MIS 80 (c.2.1–1.9 MA) and close the last remaining gap in the El'gygytgyn pollen record. Cooler climates were characterized by a mix of Larix forest-tundra, shrub Betula tundra, and herb-dominated communities. During interglaciations, Larix forests with tree Betula and Alnus, and perhaps with a minor component of Picea and tree Pinus , characterized areas that today are tundra. These forests included a rich shrub understory of Betula , Duschekia , Salix , and Pinus pumila. Although MIS 77 has been considered a "super" interglaciation, the data do not indicate that this stage was exceptionally warm. Interstadial conditions are denoted by pollen assemblages that indicate the regional vegetation was dominated by Larix forest -tundra and an absence of Pinus pumila. The palynological results from this Early Pleistocene interval demonstrate the need to: 1) modify the El'gygytgyn age model; 2) reevaluate the relationship of sediment facies to climate change; and 3) reconsider the occurrence and/or definition of "super" interglaciations. • MIS 77 "super" interglaciation is not exceptionally warm. • Larix forest dominated interglacial and interstadial periods during MIS 75-MIS 79. • Larix forest-tundra dominated glacial periods during MIS 75-MIS 79. • MIS 77 and MIS 78 are the warmest and coolest periods during MIS 75-MIS 79. The repeated cut-and-fill process induced by the late Quaternary glacial damming and catastrophic outburst events in the Yarlung Tsangpo Gorge (YTG) in the eastern Himalaya may reflect the interaction between rock uplift, climate change and river incision in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Here we provide the detailed reconstruction of the cut-and-fill history recorded at the entrance of the YTG, based on geomorphological, sedimentological and chronological analyses. The results reveal a catastrophic glacial-dam breach during the last deglaciation (∼18 ka), and the outburst flood eroded a ∼30–45 km long valley floor filled with glacial diamicton and glaciofluvial deposits, which was later further incised to form terrace T 2 with a height of ∼350 m. The second dam failure occurred at ∼5 ka, producing a spillway, forming terrace T 1 with a height of ∼100 m. The vertical incision and horizontal migration rate of the knickpoint at the glacier dams were estimated as 0.02 m/yr, and 2.5 m/yr since the last deglaciation, based on the age of the terraces and distance of the knickpoints. We consider the glacial dams to be effective in impeding headward river erosion during glacial periods. This, along with rapid river headward erosion during the last interglacial period, results in two knickpoints on the longitudinal profile due to the differences in erosion resistance. The fluvial reaches corresponding to the repeated cut-and-fill processes are confined to the center of the Namche Barwa massif, suggesting that rapid rock uplift counteracted fluvial headward erosion and maintained the stability of the bedrock knickpoint. Therefore, in comparison to glacial dams, tectonic uplift is the most important component in plateau margin stabilization. • Two primary terraces have developed in the Yarlung Tsangpo Gorge since the last glacial period. • Vertical and horizontal migration rate of the knickpoint were estimated as 0.02 m/yr, and 2.5 m/yr. • Glacial dams have impeded erosion of bedrock channels, resulting in two knickpoints on the profile. • Maintaining stability of knickpoints over millions of years requires long-term continuing rock uplift. Reconstructing mountainous landscape evolution throughout the Quaternary is challenging because of the poor long-term preservation of geomorphic records in a context of rapid surface dynamics and topographic rejuvenation. The Quaternary geomorphic evolution of the western European Alps has been strongly controlled by climatic oscillations between glacial and interglacial periods. Significant erosion and sediment remobilization during these glacial/interglacial cycles have left very few sedimentary archives to quantify the surface dynamics and paleo-environmental conditions within the mountain belt over the last hundreds of thousands of years. Alpine valleys within the periglacial zone are potential candidates to target long-term geological archives, since they may contain alluvial deposits that have been preserved from subsequent glaciations. In the Drac valley (French western Alps), three generations of paleo-valleys are preserved, each of which was filled with alluvial and lacustrine sediments in response to glacial damming downstream. The valleys were incised during subsequent times of glacial retreat, leading to the formation of epigenetic valleys. Detailed 3D mapping of the paleo-valleys was carried out using photogrammetric models to constrain their geometry. Mapping was combined with luminescence dating of alluvial deposits to reconstruct the temporal evolution of the Drac valley. This chronological framework, together with additional data from the literature, allowed us to quantitatively constrain the complex alluvial dynamics along the Drac river during the last ca. 230 ka. Poly-phased alluvial deposition occurred in the most recent paleo-valley between ca. 90 and 20 ka (i.e., from late MIS 5 to MIS 2) in a context of global climate cooling and major Alpine glaciation. Sediment infilling of the intermediate paleo-valley is dated at around 130 ka; i.e., during the late-glacial phase of the penultimate glaciation, at the abrupt warming transition between MIS 6 and MIS 5. Finally, the oldest paleo-valley was filled around 230 ka (during a sub-stage of MIS 7) probably in a cooling and glacial context. • First report of Hg records at the deep-sea facies of the Cryogenian Datangpo Fm. • The near zero Δ199Hg value in the Mn-ore layer suggest a volcanic origin. • The thick Hg-rich layer with positive Δ199Hg in the suggests a DOC reservoir existed. • The Hg-rich layer was formed by Hg-DOC release in anoxic conditions. An interglacial period existed between the Sturtian (ca. 720 ∼ 660 Ma) and the Marinoan glacial period (ca. 650 ∼ 635 Ma) in the Cryogenian. It is manifested as the Mn-bearing black rock series of the Datangpo Formation in the Nanhua rift basin, South China. In the Datangpo Formation in the Xiangtan area, a continuous mercury-rich stratum nearly 60 m thick was found, while in a previous study of the Wuhe section of the shallow sea shelf area and the Daotuo section of the semi-deep water slope area, no such thick mercury-rich stratum was reported. To explain this problem, comprehensive analyses were performed mainly focused on mercury and its isotopes, combined with total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur (TS), and major and trace elements. The results show that the Hg content of all samples of the Datangpo Formation in the Xiangtan section is highly correlated with TOC and TS. Among them, the sandstone and Mn-ore units (Interval I) at the bottom are low in mercury content (19.78 ∼ 297.38 ppb), TOC and TS content, with the mercury isotope of Δ199Hg close to 0 ‰ (0.02 ∼ 0.19‰, with 0.07‰ on average), which is relatively lower in the whole section. The black shale in the middle (Interval II) and upper parts (Interval III) of the section has high mercury contents (121.00 ∼ 721.58 ppb) and high TOC and TS contents, with positive Δ199Hg values (0.20‰ on average). This reveals that a large dissolved organic carbon (DOC) reservoir existed in the deep-water area during the Datangpo period. The release of organic carbon and Hg is mainly controlled by the redox environment and is not affected by paleoproductivity. The persistent high Hg value and positive Δ199Hg values can trace the existence of this DOC reservoir. Additionally, the sandstone-black shale-siltstone sequence of the Datangpo Formation from bottom to top shows a complete interglacial climate pattern characterized by initial warming followed by cooling, as well as a rise and subsequent fall in sea level. The lake state and chemistry are sensitive to climate change at short timescales, but it is unclear how lake hydrochemistry responds to monsoonal climate, especially over glacial-interglacial cycles, owing to lack of well-dated and continuous sedimentary records. The types and geochemical compositions of authigenic carbonates from lacustrine sediments can be used to reconstruct past hydrochemistry. Yet, little is known about the significance and influencing factors of the Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios of authigenic carbonates over glacial-interglacial cycles. Here, trace-element data of a 666 m long sediment sequence from the Heqing basin, a paleo-lake situated at the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, provide detailed glacial-interglacial hydrochemical conditions and their association with Indian summer monsoon (ISM) evolution during the entire Pleistocene. In interglacials, variation in both Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios can serve as proxies for salinity as a result of precipitation of low-Mg calcite, constrained by enhanced ISM intensity and catchment weathering product. Instead, in glacials, high Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios reflect high-Mg calcite and aragonite precipitation under low lake level conditions. There is a nonlinear response of the Sr/Ca ratio of lacustrine sediment to salinity variation when high-Mg calcite and aragonite precipitate in a hydrologically closed and evaporative lake. Based upon the sedimentary Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios in the Heqing paleo-lake, the lake hydrochemistry during the Pleistocene experienced obvious glacial-interglacial ISM cycles at the life span of the lake itself: (1) in the old interval (2640–1840 ka), the salinity was low with cycles at the early stage of lake development owing to strong ISM; (2) in the middle interval (1840–920 ka), the lake was at a balance state and its salinity was more constrained by weathering solute, rather than ISM; and (3) in the young interval (920–130 ka), the salinity fluctuated with large amplitude over glacial-interglacial cycles and subsequent increase paced the weakened ISM. This study examines the variations in relative abundance, test size, and biomass of the species Bolivina ordinaria (Foraminifera) over the last 112 ka BP on the northern slope of the Pelotas Basin, Southern Brazil. The analyses were based on 651 individuals from 42 samples distributed along the cores SIS-249 (Marine Isotope Stage 5 to 3) and SIS-188 (Marine Isotope Stage 3 to 1). Bolivina ordinaria was the most abundant species of the Bolivinitidae family in these cores, particularly during warmer periods (MIS 1 and 5). Nine other species of this family were identified: B. compacta, B. doniezi, B. lowmani, Bolivina sp., B.striatula, Brizalina sp., Brizalina spinescens, Brizalina subaenariensis, and Brizalina subspinescens. Larger test lengths were observed during MIS 3 in the both cores. The summed biomass was higher during MIS 5 in the SIS-249 core and lower during MIS 3 in the SIS-188 core. The fluctuations observed in the relative abundance and summed biomass of B. ordinaria are consistent with the oscillations in total organic carbon flow, and the variations in primary productivity between the interglacial and glacial periods. The results suggest that this infaunal species is favored by the regular supply of refractory organic matter during warmer periods but faces increased competition from shallow infaunal and epifaunal species during glacial periods, when the flow of labile organic matter increases. • The high abundance of bolivinids is associated with meso-eutrophic conditions on the northern slope of the Pelotas Basin. • The biometrics of Bolivina ordinaria offer paleoceanographic insights into glacial and interglacial cycles. • B. ordinaria appears to thrive in response to regular fluxes of refractory organic matter during interglacial periods. Choosing the most conservative technique to extract unequivocally identifiable foraminiferal tests is crucial to avoid biases in sedimentary sequence dating and paleoenvironmental interpretations. However, for problematic samples containing heavily encrusted specimens, the concentration and isolation of microfossils might be challenging. In this work, we analyzed Early-Middle Pleistocene samples from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1460, located on the southwestern Australian shelf platform, characterized by extensive early marine diagenesis. At this site, foraminiferal preservation varies between the glacial and interglacial phases. In particular, tests are highly encrusted in samples representing sea-level lowstands of glacials while exhibiting better preservation in samples corresponding to interglacials. As the application of previously established, very conservative preparation techniques (e.g., sieving technique, soaking in H 2 O 2 solution and gentle sonication) did not produce satisfactory results, it was necessary to set up a new procedure for foraminifera isolation specifically for the cautious cleaning of cemented benthic and planktic foraminiferal tests. This new methodology combines the use of a freeze-dryer with repeated soakings in highly-diluted H 2 O 2 solution to disaggregate the material. To evaluate the efficiency of our technique objectively, we considered the improvements obtained with our procedure on the worst-preserved samples of our record (corresponding to glacials) and the best-preserved (associated with interglacials). Despite being more time-consuming than other preparation techniques, this newly developed procedure produces excellent results in samples exhibiting a high level of encrustation for reliable quantitative studies and isotope analysis on foraminiferal assemblages. The carbon isotope composition (δ 13 C) of ancient shallow-water carbonates frequently is used to reconstruct changes to Earth's global carbon cycle and to perform chemostratigraphic correlation. However, previous work demonstrates that local banktop processes also exert an important control on shallow carbonate δ 13 C as well as other isotope systems like δ 18 O. To effectively interpret ancient δ 13 C records, we must understand how both global carbon cycle perturbations and changes to local conditions are translated to the stratigraphic record. Modern environments, while imperfect analogues, can serve as a guide for interpreting physical and geochemical records of more ancient environments. Shallow carbonate strata from the most recent Pleistocene glacial cycles, which drove high-amplitude perturbations to sea level, temperature, and p CO 2 without significantly altering the δ 13 C of global-mean seawater DIC, present an opportunity to begin untangling signals of global and local processes. However, the geochemistry of Pleistocene platform carbonates largely was overprinted by dissolution and meteoric diagenesis during glacial sea level lowstands. To understand how shallow carbonate geochemistry has changed during the Pleistocene, we instead look to the periplatformal slope and proximal basins. These deep environments serve as a refuge for carbonate produced on the shelf and exported to the slope, and contain a record of shallow carbonate geochemistry that persists across glacial cycles. We study 21 short piston cores from around Bahamian platforms to quantify differences in banktop production and geochemistry between the Holocene interglacial, the last glacial period, and the last interglacial (LIG) period. We show that mud production persists on the periplatformal slopes during the last glacial period, but differences in geochemistry between glacial and interglacial carbonates are a complex function of surface conditions and diagenesis. In contrast, Holocene and LIG carbonates show no evidence of post-depositional alteration, and offer the chance to study differences in δ 13 C and δ 18 O between interglacials. We find that while the δ 13 C of aragonite mud is the same during the Holocene and LIG, the LIG carbonate factory may have delivered more aragonite mud to the periplatform. In addition, the mean δ 18 O of this mud is elevated compared to the Holocene. The 17O-excess (Δ17O) of sulfate (SO 4 2−) in Antarctic ice cores is a potential tool for assessing past oxidant chemistry. However, a significant gap between atmospheric and ice core Δ17O(SO 4 2−) has been reported in Antarctica. Here, we report Δ17O(SO 4 2−) of surface snow at sites with different snow accumulation rates along a latitudinal traverse route in East Antarctica. While the Δ17O(nss-SO 4 2−) values for the coastal region showed an average of 1.0 ± 0.5‰ (n = 8) that can be explained by atmospheric Δ17O(SO 4 2−) variations, Δ17O(nss-SO 4 2−) in the katabatic (2.7 ± 0.2‰, n = 5) and inland (3.5 ± 0.3‰, n = 6) regions showed relatively high values that cannot be explained only by atmospheric deposition. Lower methanesulfonate (MSA) fluxes and lower mass ratios of MSA to SO 4 2−, along with higher Δ17O(nss-SO 4 2−) values, were observed in the katabatic and inland regions, suggesting the production of SO 4 2− with a high Δ17O value through MSA oxidation via OH radicals. The influence of this chemical post-depositional effect on MSA and Δ17O(SO 4 2−) is more pronounced in the inland compared to the katabatic region. The Δ17O(SO 4 2−) records in Antarctic ice cores with low accumulation rates may be impacted by elevated Δ17O(SO 4 2−) values originating from MSA oxidation, necessitating careful interpretation. The elemental and isotopic compositions and abundance of carbonates in marine sediments are used to reconstruct ancient climate and ocean conditions. These carbonates usually include biogenic and authigenic carbonates in origin, which are controlled by sedimentary and diagenetic processes, respectively. However, the specific mechanisms involved in controlling the origin of biogenic and authigenic carbonates are still unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we analyzed core CSHC-4 sediment from the Okinawa Trough to examine the elemental and isotopic compositions of carbonates and their relationship to methane seepage and sea-level changes. Our results indicate that high-Mg calcite is the dominant authigenic carbonate, indicating moderate methane seep intensity. Negative carbon isotope values as low as −4.06‰ V-PDB of the bulk sediments deposited in the glacial period suggest a connection between the formation of authigenic carbonates and methane seepage. Negative oxygen isotope values as low as −2.6‰ V-PDB may be attributed to the input of 18O-depleted fluids influenced by gas hydrate formation. Biogenic carbonates contribute the majority (96.3%) of the total carbonate contents in sediments. Biogenic carbonate contents are lower during glacial periods and higher during interglacial periods. The reduced carbonate content during glacial periods may be due to lower export productivity influenced by the deepening of North Pacific Intermediate Water, as well as terrestrial inputs and anoxic conditions during low sea level periods. Our findings highlight the importance of considering both biogenic and authigenic carbonates when reconstructing paleoclimate and paleoceanography based on their geochemical characteristics. The correlation between Neoproterozoic tectonics, paleoenvironment and early life are crucial for understanding the evolution of the Earth's habitability. The Yangtze Block preserves plenty of essential records to investigate these topics. The early Tonian tectonics of the Yangtze Block was characterized by exterior spreading to its west and north, and coeval interior subduction along its eastern margin, resulting in the passive continental marginal basins on the western and northern margins, and arc-related basins along the eastern margin. In the middle Tonian, the long-term exterior subduction-accretion on the west and north resulted in numerous arc-type igneous rocks and associated clastic deposits. In the east, the continuous interior subduction generated an active continental margin, with back-arc and retro-arc basins filled with volcanic and clastic rocks, and finally led to the collision between the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks at ca. 820 Ma. Some typical Neoproterozoic microfloras were flourishing. During the late Tonian, the exterior subduction generated the arc-related volcanic basins in the western and outer northern margins, while the interior post-collisional rifting resulted in a rift basin in the eastern margin, filled by shallow-marine to bathyal facies sediments. Influenced by the marginal volcanism, the paleoclimate was warm and humid in the early period, and transition to rather cold and dry in the late period. The microfloras remained the dominant paleontological taxonomy, but some macroalgal fossil fragments appeared. In the Cryogenian, along with termination of the exterior subduction, most parts of the Yangtze Block entered an extensional tectonics. Together with global paleoclimate cooling, the various tectonic backgrounds and paleogeographical frameworks of individual margins accumulated different glacial-interglacial sequences on the eastern, northern and western margins. These multi-stage deposits record paleoclimate cycles of cold-dry glacial periods and warm-humid interglacial periods. Subject to more extreme paleoclimate and paleoenvironment, early life was still dominated by microfloras (Monosphaeritae and Prismatomorphitae of Sphaeromorphida) with minor macroalgal fossil fragments. During the Ediacaran, the entire Yangtze Block evolved into an extensional-subsidence tectonics, with carbonate platform (inner shelf and outer shelf) to abyssal-bathyal (slope-basin) facies gradually developing from northwest to southeast. Episodic atmospheric and oceanic oxygenation events resulted in positive shifts in paleoclimate and paleoenvironment. The advantageous conditions induced several global Ediacaran biotas on the Yangtze Block, which are known as the prologue and first phase of the Cambrian explosion, including the Lantian, Weng'an, Miaohe, Shibantan and Gaojiashan biotas. The transition from the Ediacaran to Cambrian constitutes a critical inflection point in geological history, marking a co-evolution of organisms and paleoclimates that flourished by mutations. Appropriate external conditions made the early life further radiate, and the second and third phases of the Cambrian explosion were unveiled. They are represented by the Meishucun small shelly fossils (SSFs) on the western margin, and the Chengjiang biota and the contemporaneous Qingjiang biota on the western and northern margins of the Yangtze Block, respectively. Such manifestations indicate that the Cambrian explosion in the Yangtze Block was most likely related to the Neoproterozoic subduction and continental arcs, which could provide sufficient nutrients for the later early life radiation. Neoproterozoic tectonic evolution, magmatic activities, and sedimentary sequences are fundamental in understanding the transition from the dispersing of Rodinian continents to the assemblage of Gondwana and simultaneously supply crucial evidence for the global climate–environment change, i.e., from the Snowball Earth to a habitable Earth. In this contribution, we comprehensively synthesize the well-preserved Cryogenian–Cambrian sequences, multiple-phased magmatic activities, paleoclimate and environment in the Tarim Block of northwestern China to sketch a tectonic-sedimentary process from the breakup of Rodinia to the assemblage of Gondwana. We address the coupling between tectonic evolution process, glacial–interglacial cycles, paleoclimate and environment changes, and the formation of petroleum resources. In this study, we establish the stratigraphic frameworks in Kuruktag, Aksu, Tieklik areas in the northeast, northwest, and southwest of the Tarim Block, respectively. We review the differential geodynamic mechanisms and development processes of rifts in two discrete terranes, namely the North Tarim Terrane and South Tarim Terrane, of the Tarim Block to reconstruct the tectonic evolution process of Tarim during the Cryogenian–Cambrian interval and further decipher its control on the paleogeographic framework. The transition from extensional to compressional conditions during the early Cryogenian to Cambrian, combined with multiple phases of magmatic and glaciations, led to the three-stage evolution of sedimentary filling styles. We also document the evolution of glacial–interglacial cycles and how it impacts the paleoclimate and environment, sedimentary sequences, and the evolution and preservation of early life. The formation of organic-rich black mudstone/shale is attributed to the increasing nutrients in marine water and blooming of life in a warm-humid climate during interglacial periods; and thus, we propose the formation models of three favorable ancient petroleum source rocks in response to different tectono-sedimentary evolution stages and further estimate their quality, distribution, and resource potential. This review provides an improved understanding of the Cryogenian–Cambrian tectono-sedimentary evolution in the Tarim Block and its effects on the formation of ancient petroleum source rocks.
