COMMUNICATION ,PERIODICALS ,AGRICULTURE ,JOURNALISM ,PRESS ,RURAL population ,DUTCH people ,RESEARCH - Abstract
This article presents information on the written word as a means of mass communication. has a particular importance regarding advisory literature. In this study an attempt was made to investigate if and to what degree the information, passed on to the farmers through a number of well-known periodicals of the Dutch agricultural press and the agricultural advisory service, is tuned in to the public for which they are intended. Readability formulas are only aids for measuring certain aspects of the readability of the written word, but as such they can perform a useful function in promoting clearer communication between writer and reader. In the search for more objective standards in determining the difficulty of written notices use can be made of the readability research which is developed and practiced in the U.S.A.

PSYCHOLOGICAL research ,PERIODICALS ,RESEARCH ,CLINICAL psychology ,PSYCHOLOGICAL tests ,SURVEYS - Abstract
The article focuses on research papers of clinical psychology. It informs that the same definition of research was applied in culling these journals; papers were included in the survey if they presented systematic investigation of a specifically described group of subjects and the derivation of normative or comparative data from psychometrics, case histories, or therapeutic interviews; or analysis of administration, scoring, and interpretation of a given instrument. It further informs that it is necessary to recognize, however, that changes in editorial policy of certain of the journals have resulted in the acceptance for publication of a larger number of shorter papers.

In the article, the author explains the meaning of popular science. He states that the building of science is a more chaotic process. The author is concerned with the individual acts of generating a new idea that sum up into the body of scientific information. To do research is to be in a special state of grace. He maintains that American archival journals suffer for not recording more of the raw experience. He proposes a sort of interview in which good scientists and engineers talk in a very personal way about how they do science and what it means to them.

8. A Survey of the Sources and Availability of Computer Software Applicable to Psychophysiological Research in the Periodical Literature.
- Subjects
COMPUTER software ,PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY ,COMPUTERS ,COMPUTER science ,RESEARCH ,PERIODICALS - Abstract
PP-T0003-0-1 The increased usage of small computers in the research laboratory has made it necessary for the individual investigator to become familiar with computer science. A survey of sources, availability, and types of information distributed about computer software was made to determine their relevance to psychophysiology. Periodicals are divided into five classes and discussed as to the assets and liabilities of some of the present indexing and source references. The desirability of increasing the accessibility of software applications to psychophysiology is noted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. A NOTE ON RESEARCH INTERESTS IN RURAL SOCIOLOGY.
- Subjects
RURAL sociology ,SOCIAL sciences ,SOCIOLOGY ,RESEARCH ,PERIODICALS - Abstract
This paper presents the methods and findings of an analysis of the first 14 volumes of the journal, "Rural Sociology," from 1936 to 1949. The assumption was made that the articles published in the journal broadly reflect the research interests in rural sociology sufficiently well and that answers could be formulated for questions such as what are the major topics of research interests in rural sociology, or where are persons undertaking rural research located. The articles in the sections entitled General Articles, Notes, Bulletin Reviews, and Book Reviews were classified according to content under one or more of 280 topics. Due to the diversity of the content and the complexities involved in classification, the section, News Notes and Announcements, was not included in the analysis. Percentages of topics for each section of the journal were calculated. Authors contributed to the respective sections of the journal from various states, and the sections with the highest proportion of contributors were the Northeastern and North Central states with a particularly heavy concentration in New York State and Washington DC.

The "Journal of Periodontal Research," has now been in existence for six years and an equal number of volumes has been issued. Subscriptions have steadily increased during this period, and so have the number of papers submitted for publication. A primary reason for this success is the whole hearted support of the Associate Editors and the Editorial Board Members. However, due to reasons of personal nature and to changes in professional activities and relationships to periodontal research, several members of the editorial staff have asked to be relieved of their responsibilities to the journal.

14. ORGANIZATION OF INFORMATION.
- Subjects
PERIODICALS ,INFORMATION resources ,PUBLICATIONS ,DOCUMENTATION ,RESEARCH ,LITERATURE - Abstract
The article presents various bibliographical notes and articles published in periodicals, related to documentation. The article, "Aids for Science: Information for Industry," published in the journal New Zealand Engineering in 1948, focuses on scientists who commence an investigation task which faces them by no means confined to hours of patient experiment at the bench or in the field. It is suggested that literature must be searched, vital reference works obtained, contact made with other workers in the same field, and when results have been accumulated, these have to be written up for publication. Another article, "Information Service As an Essential in the Progress of Science," by J.D. Bernal, discusses the aims that the modern information service should set for itself.

This article focuses on present sources through which the Russians have access to Western scientific publications, without necessarily having to read them in the original Western tongue. On the other hand, it could be of value to find out to what extent the Russians have succeeded in documenting Western science and consequently in profiting from it. By the concept "Western sources," articles from English (both British and American), French, and German are most generally understood. No effort was spared to check these Russian documentation sources, but it must regrettably be said that only very few were as yet available in research libraries in the United States.

RESEARCH ,PERIODICALS ,MIMEOGRAPH ,WORKS councils ,RESEARCH & development ,SCIENTISTS ,LEGISLATORS - Abstract
This article focuses on the human problems related to scientific research. According to the author, to the scientific or Institutional director problem in scientific research must be such as to appear important and must offer such prospects of results and subsequent erudite publications as can be depended upon to impress by sponsors or legislators, as the case may be. The multiplication of small scientific journals of overlapping subject matter occurs constantly. Brief notes appear time and again to put certain matters on record and to gain notice, but the promised definitive reports never appear. Mimeographing is cheap and is resorted to for purposes of scientific propagandizing. Research workers appreciate this condition, but each one is reluctant to curtail his own propagandizing. Scientific publication, being a byproduct of research and not a directly remunerative activity for the scientist, has a peculiar status. Problems must be so presented to those in control of funds as to impress them, whether they be legislators, boards of trustees, private philanthropists, or committees in charge of dispensing grants.

STATISTICAL sampling ,STATISTICS ,RESEARCH ,PERIODICALS ,IMAGINATION ,AUTHORS - Abstract
The article presents discusses that the paper "Reliability, Chance and Fantasy in Inter-Judge Agreement Among Clinicians" published in the July 1954 issue of the periodical deserves the most careful attention from all experimenters using small sample statistical because it points up grave inadequacies which are overlooked frequently in uncritical research design. Any person with long experience with games of chance will be aware of certain vagaries in statistical tendencies, which may grossly distort the characteristics of small samples of data taken in isolation from the long-term trends of the factors under study. Every elementary textbook in statistics contains illustrations of the apparent skewing which may occur with sampling inadequacies but which are smoothed out with collection of a sufficiently large sampling of data to eliminate atypical samplings.

DEMOGRAPHY ,PERIODICALS ,ECONOMIC structure ,BUSINESS cycles ,RESEARCH ,ECONOMIC indicators - Abstract
This article presents information on several papers published in different periodicals, which deal with the status of research on demography in Scandinavia as of 1974. Anyone who wants to get an insight into the current state of research on demography in Scandinavia should turn to the first issue 1972 of the periodical "The Scandinavian Economic History Review." Poul Thestrup investigates "Methodological Problems of a Family Reconstitution" on the basis of data from a Danish rural parish before 1800 and finds that the greatest merit of the technique of family reconstitution is in providing indicators of child mortality and marital fertility, its greatest drawback being the restriction of the method to those few for whom adequate information is available. Stale Dyndk surveys "Historical Demography in Norway 1660-1801" and points out that the figures suggest that evenness of growth was the chief feature in the period 1665-1801, wherefore the periods of stagnation and crisis evident in other European countries do not seem to have occurred. During the period 1750-1800, however, the national indicators show an accelerating increase of population and economic progress is registered in most regions. In a splendid and balanced account Ingrid Semmingsen sums up the latest findings on "Emigration from Scandinavia."

PERIODICAL publishing ,SCIENTIFIC communication ,PERIODICALS ,PUBLISHING ,RESEARCH - Abstract
The article presents information about the book by Henry A. Barton based on publication and dissemination of results of scientific research. Barton believes that the only adequate way to communicate the results of research is through the medium of scientific journals. Barton discusses several supplementary methods such as the circulation of reprints, digests, and so forth. The cost of publishing journals is so low that it should not be much of a problem for civilization to handle satisfactorily.

TECHNICAL reports ,RESEARCH ,INDUSTRIAL research ,TECHNOLOGICAL innovations ,PERIODICALS ,LABORATORIES - Abstract
A study of citations of scientific periodicals in technical reports prepared by the staff of an industrial research laboratory indicates that there exists a Bradford set of periodicals for a multidisciplinary library, and that the size and contents of the set have at least short-term stability. The effect on library coverage of varying the extent to which the Bradford set is held was determined, A discard policy based upon a single aging factor does not appear to be very well suited to a multidisciplinary library. This article presents information related to the journal. The issue marks the beginning of Volume XII and with it a new editorial staff and advisory board. In the past eleven years, this publication has been transformed from an American Society of Criminology Newsletter to a journal. As its first editor the author has seen it progress both in quality and size under the subsequent leadership of editors Simon Dinitz and C. Ray Jeffery. It was during Jeffery's editorship that the association with Sage Publications was initiated and this decision has proven to be a wise one. A number of significant changes have already been initiated as a consequence of the work of this editorial group since last fall. All articles submitted for consideration are reviewed independently by two area content specialists. Their recommendations, along with those of the associate editors and the editor, form the basis of materials selected for publication. Contributors should know the criteria that the authors are utilizing in the selection of materials for publication. First, the material should represent original contributions to knowledge.
