The Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) was a multi-cycle treasury program on the Hubble Space Telescope(HST) that surveyed a total area of approx. 0.25 deg(sup 2) with approx.900 HST orbits spread across five fields over three years. Within these survey images we discovered 65 supernovae (SNe) of all types, out to z approx. 2.5. We classify approx. 24 of these as Type Ia SNe (SNe Ia) based on host galaxy redshifts and SN photometry (supplemented by grism spectroscopy of six SNe). Here we present a measurement of the volumetric SN Ia rate as a function of redshift, reaching for the first time beyond z = 2 and putting new constraints on SN Ia progenitor models. Our highest redshift bin includes detections of SNe that exploded when the universe was only approx. 3 Gyr old and near the peak of the cosmic star formation history. This gives the CANDELS high redshift sample unique leverage for evaluating the fraction of SNe Ia that explode promptly after formation (500 Myr). Combining the CANDELS rates with all available SN Ia rate measurements in the literature we find that this prompt SN Ia fraction isfP0.530.09stat0.100.10sys0.26, consistent with a delay time distribution that follows a simplet1power law for all timest40 Myr. However, mild tension is apparent between ground-based low-z surveys and space-based high-z surveys. In both CANDELS and the sister HST program CLASH (Cluster Lensing And Supernova Survey with Hubble), we find a low rate of SNe Ia at z > 1. This could be a hint that prompt progenitors are in fact relatively rare, accounting for only 20 of all SN Ia explosions though further analysis and larger samples will be needed to examine that suggestion.

We report observations of three gravitationally lensed supernovae (SNe) in the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) Multi-Cycle Treasury program. These objects, SN CLO12Car (z = 1.28), SN CLN12Did (z = 0.85), and SN CLA11Tib (z = 1.14), are located behind three different clusters, MACSJ1720.2+3536 (z = 0.391), RXJ1532.9+3021 (z = 0.345), and A383 (z = 0.187), respectively. Each SN was detected in Hubble Space Telescope optical and infrared images. Based on photometric classification, we find that SNe CLO12Car and CLN12Did are likely to be Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), while the classification of SN CLA11Tib is inconclusive. Using multi-color light-curve fits to determine a standardized SN Ia luminosity distance, we infer that SN CLO12Car was approx. 1.0 +/- 0.2 mag brighter than field SNe Ia at a similar redshift and ascribe this to gravitational lens magnification. Similarly, SN CLN12Did is approx. 0.2 +/- 0.2 mag brighter than field SNe Ia. We derive independent estimates of the predicted magnification from CLASH strong+weak-lensing maps of the clusters (in magnitude units, 2.5 log10 μ): 0.83 +/- 0.16 mag for SN CLO12Car, 0.28 +/- 0.08 mag for SN CLN12Did, and 0.43 +/- 0.11 mag for SN CLA11Tib. The two SNe Ia provide a new test of the cluster lens model predictions: we find that the magnifications based on the SN Ia brightness and those predicted by the lens maps are consistent. Our results herald the promise of future observations of samples of cluster-lensed SNe Ia (from the ground or space) to help illuminate the dark-matter distribution in clusters of galaxies, through the direct determination of absolute magnifications.

We present diffraction-limited K s band and L(prime) adaptive optics images of the edge-on debris disk around the nearby F2 star HD 15115, obtained with a single 8.4 m primary mirror at the Large Binocular Telescope. At the Ks band, the disk is detected at signal-to-noise per resolution element (SNRE) approx. 3-8 from approx. 1 to 2".5 (45-113 AU) on the western side and from approx. 1". 2 to 2".1 (63-90 AU) on the east. At L the disk is detected at SNRE approx. 2.5 from approx. 1 to 1".45 (45-90 AU) on both sides, implying more symmetric disk structure at 3.8 micrometers. At both wavelengths the disk has a bow-like shape and is offset from the star to the north by a few AU. A surface brightness asymmetry exists between the two sides of the disk at the Ks band, but not at L(prime). The surface brightness at the K s band declines inside 1"(approx. 45 AU), which may be indicative of a gap in the disk near 1".The K s − L(prime) disk color, after removal of the stellar color, is mostly gray for both sides of the disk. This suggests that scattered light is coming from large dust grains, with 3-10 micrometers sized grains on the east side and 1-10 micrometers dust grains on the west. This may suggest that the west side is composed of smaller dust grains than the east side, which would support the interpretation that the disk is being dynamically affected by interactions with the local interstellar medium.

We present the most sensitive ultraviolet observations of Supernova 1987 A to date. Imaging spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope-Cosmic Origins Spectrograph shows many narrow (Delta v approximates 300 km/s) emission lines from the circumstellar ring, broad Delta v approximates 10-20 x 10(exp 3) km/s) emission lines from the reverse shock, and ultraviolet continuum emission. The high signal-to-noise ratio (>40 per resolution element) broad Ly-alpha emission is excited by soft X-ray and EUV heating of mostly neutral gas in the circumstellar ring and outer supernova debris. The ultraviolet continuum at lambda > 1350 A can be explained by H-I two-photon (2s(exp 2)S(sub 1/2)-l(exp 2)S(sub 1/2)) emission from the same region. We confirm our earlier, tentative detection of N V lambda 1240 emission from the reverse shock and present the first detections of broad He II lambda1640, C IV lambda 1550, and N IV ] lambda1486 emission lines from the reverse shock. The helium abundance in the high-velocity material is He/H = 0.14 +/- 0.06. The N V /H alpha line ratio requires partial ion-electron equilibration (T(sub e)/T(sub p) approximately equal to 0.14-0.35). We find that the N/C abundance ratio in the gas crossing the reverse shock is significantly higher than that in the circumstellar ring, a result that may be attributed to chemical stratification in the outer envelope of the supernova progenitor. The N/C abundance may have been stratified prior to the ring expUlsion, or this result may indicate continued CNO processing in the progenitor subsequent to the expUlsion of the circumstellar ring.

We present BVR(sub c)JHK(sub s) photometry of the optical afterglow of the gamma-ray burst GRB 021211 taken at the Magellan, MMT, and WIYN observatories between 0.7 and 50 days after the burst. We find an intrinsic spectral slope at optical and near-infrared wavelengths of 0.69 +/- 0.14 at 0.87 days. The optical decay during the first day is almost identical to that of GRB 990123 except that GRB 021211's optical afterglow was intrinsically approximately 38 times fainter and the transition from the reverse shock to the forward shock may have occurred earlier than it did for GRB 990123. We find no evidence for a jet break or the cooling break passing through optical frequencies during the first day after the burst. There is weak evidence for a break in the J-band decay between 0.89 and 1.87 days which may be due to a jet. The optical and infrared data are consistent with a relativistic fireball where the shocked electrons are in the slow cooling regime and the electron index is 2.3 +/- 0.1. The burst appears to have occurred in a homogeneous ambient medium. Our analysis suggests that the jet of GRB 021211 may have a small opening angle (1.4 deg-4.4 deg) and that the total gamma-ray energy is much less than the canonical value of 1.33 x 10(exp 51) erg. If, this is the case then most of the energy of the burst may be in another form such as a frozen magnetic field, in supernova ejecta, or in a second jet component. The host galaxy of GRB 021211 is subluminous and has a star formation rate of at least 1 solar mass/yr.

We describe and model high-velocity (approximately 15,000 km S(exp -1)) Ly Alpha and H Alpha emission from the supernova remnant SNR 1987A seen in 1997 September and October with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. Part of this emission comes from a reverse shock located at approximately 75% of the radius of the inner boundary ofthe innercircumstellar ring and confined within + or - 30 degrees of the equatorial plane. Departure from axisymmetry in the Ly Alpha and H Alpha emission correlates with that seen in nonthermal radio emission and reveals an asymmetry in the circumstellar gas distribution. We also see diffuse high-velocity Ly-Alpha emission from supernova debris inside the reverse shock that may be due to excitation by nonthermal particles accelerated by the shock.

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of a recently identified X-ray bright, magnetic cataclysmic variable, RJ 051542+0104.7. The X-ray source was discovered serendipitously by Walter et al. (1994; Walter & Zoonematkermani 1994), and their data imply the presence of a heated white dwarf compatible with a magnetic accretion column. Buckley (1994) has reported the presence of circular polarization. Our optical photometry shows that the system undergoes eclipses with a period of 7.9835 +/- 0.0002 hours. The eclipse is 1 magnitude deep and appears to be total. Our spectra were all obtained near eclipse and show a strong blue continuum with broad Balmer emission as well as He II (4686 and 5411 A), C III/N III (4650 A) and He I lines. The blue continuum and emission lines disappear during eclipse, leaving only the spectrum of a M0 star. Using the observed magnitude during eclipse and ignoring interstellar extinction, the distance is approximately 500 pc. For the secondary to fill its Roche lobe, it must be at least 20% larger than that of a normal dM0 star. This may indicate the red dwarf is far from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) due to strong magnetic braking. We find evidence for cyclotron humps in the continuum spectrum which imply a magnetic field strength in the cyclotron emitting region of up to 55 MG. The unexpected existence of a long period AM Her system should provide constraints on models of polar evolution.

The cataclysmic variable S193 was observed with the Ginga and ROSAT satellites, along with ground-based optical observations. The bremsstrahlung temperatures and the column densities derived from these two observations are noticeably different. However, since the observations were separated by 3 yr and took place at different optical magnitudes, it is not clear whether this is related to an intrinsic change in the system or to a two component source of X-rays. While the X-ray data are not sufficient to accomplish a detailed analysis for periodicities, the Ginga data place an upper limit of 40% on the amplitude of any sinusoidal modulation.

Observations of Nova Herculis 1991 obtained during the months of 1991 May-September are presented. Spectral observations a few weeks after outburst constrain the distance to Nova Her to between 6 and 12 kpc and show evidence of dust formation in the expanding shell and line profiles with five components having large expansion velocities. Initial photometric observations of the nova in June showed the nova had declined approximately ten magnitudes in the V band from its maximum, and by September, the nova had dimmed by approximately two additional magnitudes. The period derived from these observations agrees with that reported by Leibowitz et al. (1992). Periodic eclipses with a depth of about 0.7 V mag are observed, and the depths of the eclipses are constant over a 2-month period while the overall brightness diminished by one magnitude. The long duration of the eclipses indicates an eclipse of an extended source, likely the accretion disk.

Results are reported from a search for high-Galactic-latitude wide binaries down to visual magnitude 14 on five digitized Schmidt-telescope plates. The data-reduction and analysis techniques are described in detail, and the results are presented in graphs and briefly characterized. The number of wide binaries and the estimated wide-binary number density are both three times smaller than those found by Bahcall and Soneira (1981), but still too large to be consistent with the predictions of physical models. Possible explanations for this discrepancy are explored.

Optical spectra with 2.5-A resolution obtained throughout the orbit of IR Gem during a five-day sequence beginning at an outburst state and ending at quiescence are compared with B magnitude and IUE spectra obtained throughout other quiescent-state orbits. No obvious second component is found in the emission lines. In contrast to previous results, little high-excitation He II 4686-A emission is noted, and no variation of the equivalent widths of the Balmer emission is found over the orbital cycle. The results suggest that large changes in the excitation level and in the modulation from a heated zone can take place during different quiescent states, possibly due to the interoutburst phase.

The Voyager Planetary Radio Astronomy (PRAD) experiment revealed prominent 'arcs' when the radio intensity at 1-40 MHz was displayed in time-frequency coordinates. These data are consistent with multiple currents flowing along longitudinally separated Jovian magnetic flux tubes, each current radiating conically at angles up to about 90 deg. The spacings between adjacent PRA arcs, and also between adjacent S burst arc segments observed at the Nancay Observatory, were analyzed and found to be so brief, less than 1-3 min, that either these currents and any associated Alfven waves survive for at least a few circulations of Jupiter by Io (a hypothesis independently supported by the observations of arcs at all Io phase angles), or each such Alfven current can radiate at several different cone-angles simultaneously (a hypothesis independently supported by the observation of such behavior in the S burst arcs).
